Best Reference Book for Triathletes.......2007-09-20
OK, let's face it. If you weren't a type-A personality, you probably wouldn't be a triathlete. Friel caters to the busy, detail-oriented tri set by explain the principles behind training - not just handing you a set schedule. To get better and push your limits, you must understand the physiology and the methodology behind the training. Friel provides this and more. This is a must-purchase items for triathletes of all levels.
Highly Recommended!.......2007-09-15
I found this book very helpfull. It focuses on how to plan an effective training plan for Triathlons. It uses all the latest techniques in designing and developing a yearly, monthly, weekly and daily training and work out plan to prepare for and peak for your important races. I learned a great deal and understand a great deal more about how to train properly to achieve my best potential. It starts with the Base Period where enduance and conditioning are emphasized, the Build period when the serious training and development occurr, the Peak period where final touches to speed and power occurr and the Race period when the final touches are done including proper tapering techniques allow you to be rested and ready to perform your best. An excellent book and one to have on your shelf for ready reference.
Great for a beginner triathlete with an advanced workout background.......2007-07-24
I bought this book to get more knowledge and background about triathlons. I thought this book did an amazing job of teaching me the essence and knowledge I need to know to workout safely and build my own individualized workout plan. Granted, some of their examples are for pretty serious triathletes, there was a lot of useful information in there. I often find myself going back to the book after learning about other triathlon stuff to see what this author has to say about it. I would very highly recommend this book to people who are starting out as triathletes but have a background in working out. For example, have done a highschool/college sport or a sport for more than 5 years. I will see myself using this book for a long time. I did not find that I just read it once and it has nothing left to give me. I will re-read it and use it as a reference for a long while.
Informative for itermediate to advanced triathletes.......2007-07-09
Very thorough book but a bit complex for the average triathlete. It can be a bit overwhelming but is helpful for most triathletes. I would not reccommend for a beginner getting into the sport.
Awesome Book.......2007-06-01
The book is a step by step to creating your own triathlon training routine. I am somewhat new to the sport and this book really broke it down and explained it step by step. I cannot wait to see how my times have changed this year with the addition of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Superb book.......2007-09-19
I used this for my first tri. Harr used a unique approach and asked about 40 questions to categorize your time availability and your current level of fitness. Then he had a program designed specifically to increase your stamina in each discipline. This book was great for learning the basics and understanding about building a 'base' and strengthening yourself. It was helpful for eating habits but should be supplemented with another source. It was recommended to me and I recommend it to my friends.
misleading planning & time frames for a beginner.......2007-09-05
unfortunately, the magical transformation of the author into a competitive athlete is a unique event, not one that readers will replicate easily (or ever!), especially following the plans inside.
the author ignores the base building necessary to race the events. athletes need to train their musculoskeletal structure to take the abuse of workouts as much as they need to get their hearts up to speed. this is best done slowly and incrementally. i think if you have been a regular athlete for at least a year before using the plan in this book, you may be fine.
if you are beginning in any of the three sports, i'd advise another book to show the real process of developing the appropriate base needed to compete without injury. Look up the titles by Joe Friel for more complete information on how to structure a training plan.
Great for Weekend Triathlon Training.......2007-08-12
If you've recently started getting into triathlon then this is the book for you. It is simple, concise, and does an excellent job of bringing beginning triathlon into reach for the everyday joe.
It is broad enough in its content to cover most topics the amateur triathlete needs to know, yet specific in a number of training models to help you select the right program for your body and skill level. Great recommendation here.
Great book for first triathlon.......2007-07-24
I ordered this book a few days too late. I had completed my first sprint distance triathlon and then received the book about 3 days later. After reading it, I found that it would have been extremely useful BEFORE doing my first triathlon and less useful after completing my first triathlon. A lot of the information in there I had now learned by doing. It gives some helpful suggestions, but after doing your first one I feel that there are better books out there for taking you further. After I did my first triathlon and I plan on doing another one, I feel this training plan does not suffice and I will need to search out more elaborate materials. All in all, great book for the beginner triathlete BEFORE their first race, but it's not a bad book if you still have a lot of questions.
Great Book from couch to finish line.......2007-07-10
What a great book for beginners. I completed a sprint distance without books... and than bought this and the triathlete magazine book. This is much more approachable. The book is written in plain english with lots of practical tips.
Only complaint (and this is minor) is that there is very little on recovery.
It is worth 2 or 3X the cost if for no other reason than to provide a calming "voice".

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful book.......2007-10-03
This is a good adjunct to the "Triathletes Training Bible". She works with Friel's training concepts and adds meat to them with specific daily/weekly work out plans. She has specific plans for various distances (sprint, olympic, 1/2 and full Ironman), events (Tri and Duo), and various preparation time periods (12 weeks to 6 months to full year). I think she also incorporates some of the efficiency techniques suggested in Niles "Time Saving Training" and mentions his book as a good resource. It's a well written and interesting book with lots of good info and help in laying out your training and establishing a workable long term plan.
Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, XTERRA, Ironman, and Endurance Racing .......2007-09-13
I was looking for a comprehensive training plan for one year, most books will offer a 12-16 week program. This book delivered the full plan, and I have used it as a beginner triathlete to prepare for multiple sprint and olympic distance races. The nutrition chapter is also excellent.
Finally, a book with easy to follow training plans.......2007-06-22
I've bought a few triathlon training books in my day, and most of them are just full of theory, scientific jargon and a lot of technical nonsense. This book, however, lists everything in an easy to follow fashion, from proper nutrition to how your body type will react to training. And the best thing about this book are the endless training plans that it includes (from sprint to full Ironman), for those who are just starting out to those who have done this for a while and just want to get faster. Plus it lists training for Xterra-type races and duathlons as well, which I definitely want to participate in. I love it!
Excellent training source.......2007-06-09
I bought this book to help with my half-ironman training. It's excellent for all different triathalons!!! Wonderfully written with a ton of information.
This book packs in a lot of information..........2007-05-30
In her book, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes, Gale Bernhardt offers great tips, instruction, and structured training plans that cover many multisport distances. As a reader will note, Gale is a disciple of and now contemporary to Joe Friel; so, the owner of Friel's "Bible" will feel instantly at ease reading and understanding Gale's perspective on preparing for multisport competition.
At the same time, a complete neophyte could pick up this book and quickly get up to speed on his/her journey down the multisport path. Gale's writing style is easy to understand and the paths she lays out vis a vis her plans are easy to follow.
This is a great book that will benefit new multisport participants as well as seasoned veterans.

Customer Reviews:
basics.......2007-07-05
If you want to do a triathlon and were not sure, this book will give you the information you will need.
I know it's for beginners, but really........2007-05-17
The info was way too basic. Hardly anything on swim stroke. Find something else unless you don't even know what a tri is.
A Beginner's Triathlon Trainer.......2007-04-10
Get yourself to the starting line with these helpful training tips and calendar. Helpful drills to get you in shape for your first triathlon are also included.
Good but not great.......2007-03-03
More than any other peice of equipment, this book definitely gave me what I needed to get to the starting line. It gave me the confidence that I would need to finish my first tri. The book was definitely for me, the person who really doesn't know much about how to even start my training. The drills were helpful and the training calendar worked well to get me to my goal.
But, it is not without it's flaws. As already mentioned in other reviews, swimming is not covered enough to really help you out. My only real struggle was in the swim and his lack emphasis may have led to some over confidence from the attitude her presents. Also, the simplistic way it covered the training regimine was not helpful; I never understood why the drills I was doing were going to help.
Practical.......2006-11-20
I found this book a valuable help for who is new to Triathlon and also for starting from scratch both running and cycling (NOT for swimming).
Maybe too much enphasis on nutrition, but averall it's a very practical and usful book. Good value for your money.
Book Description
Power meters are rapidly becoming an invaluable part of training and racing among professional cyclists and triathletes, amateurs looking for a competitive edge, and gear fiends. For coaches and athletes, these devices offer enormous potential for targeting and timing training to realize a rider's goals. Yet few athletes or coaches understand how to interpret the data for optimal results, and few cycling resources do more than mention the possibility of wattage training. Training and Racing with a Power Meter decrypts the layers of information and explains how to begin a program that effectively integrates power. Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan have conducted extensive research and consulted with manufacturers to deliver the most sophisticated and scientific approach to training on the market, allowing riders to tap every last watt of power. The book includes cogent case studies, sample power workouts, and a chapter on the future of training and racing with these soon-to-be indispensable devices.
Customer Reviews:
The user's manual for training with power.......2007-10-12
If you are looking for the rosetta stone to unlock the mystery of wattage data and what it can mean to your training then this is the book for you.
The Benefits of a Power Meter.......2007-04-09
Cyclists who train with a power meter must have this manual. It's the first of its kind, and you can learn everything you need to know to get started with this new trend.
great reference.......2007-01-12
this is a great book to understand the details of training for cycling using a powermeter. a necessary reference for the library of an athlete with a powermeter. this is the first of its kind and does a great job directing the reader in methods to analyze power data from rides, get the most of workouts, and monitor training stress. also includes pretty thorough reviews of the various powermeters on the market.
Power Meter Decision maker.......2007-01-11
This book is a must have for those already training with power or cyclists interested in learning what all the hubbub is about.
I bought the book in October 2006 because I had been hearing success stories from folks who trained with power. The book is well laid out and even provides enough information about the top four power meters and the software they come with to make a reasonable decision, however I would recommend joining some of the forums and reading as much as you can before you make your final decision.
Some of the topics were a bit technical, but you don't have to fully understand the most technical aspects of the book to find the information within these pages useful. I wanted to understand as much as possible without having to become a physiology major. With three readings under my belt I feel confident that I can create a reasonable training plan for improving my standing within the weekend group century rides. In addition to the book the authors provide a power meter course that visits major cities. I believe serious cyclists will find this course helpful especially if they read the book first.
My power meter, which this book and the forums helped me choose, arrived this week. I hope to install it over the weekend and take my first fitness test so I can build a power based training plan.
This book is a must have!
Take your training to the next level.......2007-01-10
I am an experienced racer in triathlon and MTB ultra-distance events. This book, coupled with my new power measuring tools and my long-time use of a heart rate monitor, has taken my training to new levels. I am a detail-oriented, technical person, and the book satisfied my need for insights into how and why things are recommended or advocated. I found the advice and techniques to be absolutely useful in helping me improve my knowledge and my performance. I am wasting less time training wrong and getting more back from my sessions in the few months since I began reading this book-- but it will take me years to master the material inside, which tells me that I've got a real reference as opposed to an owner's manual here. If you're going to train with power, don't do it without this book.

complete triathlon book.......2007-09-24
This book is full of information about training for any kind of a triathlon, from sprint to ironman. Very informative
Highly recommended!.......2007-09-15
I found this book very good. I first got it from the Library and then decided it was a book I wanted on my shelf. It covers all the bases for learning about, training for and performing in Triathlons. It is very up to date and very practical in it's approach. I am a novice and this book has made me feel quite competent in how to approach, prepare for and perform in triathlons. It is chock full of information and I highly recommend it if you're at all serious about improving your performance.
The most scientific approach to triathlon I have encountered........2007-05-15
This book is by far the best scientific guide to the science of fitness and nutrition associated with triathlon. I have always had unanswered questions about carb consumption and storage, oxygen usage, aerobic, and anerobic thresholds. This book gave me more answers than any other I have ever read.
A Beginner's Triathlon Reference.......2007-04-09
Athletes just getting into the triathlon movement can learn important tips about nutrition and workouts. This is a great training reference too.
Extremely Basic and Fairly Obvious Material.......2007-01-24
I read this book in a couple hours after I received it in the mail. I've competed at the most basic amatuer level in triathlons, and I've led a life that is relatively healthy (I run often, know how to swim, and I take a long bike if the weather permits). Knowing how to eat right, and how to stretch, this book provide absolutely no help to me. If, though, you've never done anything althetic before, and you don't know that "whole foods are better for you than processed foods," and you need to be told not to eat mayonaise three times a day, then maybe you should consider reading this before competing in a triathlon. I was very disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Great Swim Workouts.......2007-10-11
First of all, I'm not a swimmer. So, at first, this book confused me... Not used to all the terminology. However, if you read through it before heading to the pool, it's very easily picked up. The workouts are tough, but you will see results!
Very pleased.......2007-08-14
What a great product. I use it every time I go to the pool. It takes the guesswork out of training and mixes things up. It's like having a silent trainer.
It was hard to understand.......2007-05-13
IT was waterproof so that was nice. However it used way to many abbreviations and i had to look everything up in the back. Complicated.
Fantastic Book!!.......2007-04-26
A friend of mine had this book at the pool doing their workout, and bought it for me as a gift. Prior to getting the book, I was trying to come up with my own workout. This book provides me with much bettered structured workouts, and I am working out harder and better than ever before.
The two levels are good, as some days I do the shorter workouts, and time permitting I can attempt the longer ones. And of course, I can always add/subtract from those.
I am not having problems yet with the book getting wet. The pages seem to stay dry for me, but I put a towel on the deck, and then stand the book up on a towel.
I highly recommend this book if you are trying to workout on your own.
Good variety for your workouts.......2006-08-27
I've been fitness swimming for several decades which usually means go to pool, swim a mile. I recently started working through the workouts in this book with some triathlon friends. Still manage to get my mile but every day takes a different focus, my swimming has improved and I enjoy it more. Each page is something fresh and different. While the pages are waterproof, you do need to spend a few minutes and wipe EVERY page dry when you get home, not a big deal. Or stick the book in a ziplock bag and avoid the wet pages problem in the first place.
While it doesn't matter if you swim in metres or yards, the book is written for a short course 25 metre/yard pool. If you're like me and have the luxury of a 50m pool, you'll find that some of the drills don't convert nicely to the long course.
Book Description
This book guides weekend triathletes in getting the most out of their training time and helps serious triathletes get maximum physical and mental benefit from training. Chapters cover the basics of training and fitness; training specifics for swim, bike, and marathon; mental strategies; and more. Sample training plans, photographs, charts, tables and case studies are also included.

Not for beginners but a good source!.......2007-07-29
I have a few books for Tri and i found this very good source for those who would like to try IM or any races that equivalent to it. For beginners, start with other Tri books and when you're planning to prep-up for 50+ miles tri races, use this book as a guide.
I'm no expert but i did a few tri-races and this is my ultimate guide...i even sleep with it.
Ironman Training.......2007-04-09
Anyone training for an Ironman competition should check out these training tips. Triathletes will also find this to be an invaluable resource.
Going long great book.......2007-03-29
Great Book, best tri book after The Triathlete's Training Bible.
If you want to go long this is your addition bible!
THE BEST.......2007-03-28

Customer Reviews:
Did not like it..........2007-07-08
Even as a beginner, I found it too simple for what it claims to be, and not well written enough to hold it high on a virtue other than information given.
Skip this one..........2006-06-13
I was not impressed. Even as a newcomer to triathlons, the book helped very little. It had some motivation, but there are far better books for that out there, and very little useful training advice.
My definate advice is not to get this book--- I still regret spending my money on this one.
Some useful information, but not a complete reference.......2006-05-01
I noticed that many reviewers commented that this book was too geared towards beginners however, as a beginner myself, I found the book lacking. There is a lot of useful information and advice in general, but I was not able to read the book and start a practical training program. Most of the training advice is very generalized, and after reading it I still had no clue where to start. I was recently at a beginner women's triathlon clinic and I found that several participants agreed with me, and they recommended the book Slow Fat Triathlete which I have yet to read. I have referred to Edwards' chapters on techniques in all three sports and race day preparation, but beginners will need more than just this book to get started. I have recommended Eric Harr's Triathlon Training In Four Hours a Week to my friends and I am anxiously awaiting the publication of Joe Friel's Your First Triathlon. So overall, not a bad book, but just not enough information to really jumpstart your triathlon training.
Great!.......2005-08-16
I am doing my first triathlon and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. It has great training tips, including diagrams for all events and how to improve your fitness level.
A Great Book for Women Training for a Triathlon.......2005-07-28
I bought my daughter this book at Christmas and she thought I was crazy. She had suffered an injury in High-School soccer that would prevent her from playing the sport competitively again. So I just looked at this book and liked the contents and gave it to her. Well you can guess what happened, nothing! Then my wife/her mother started reading it and training and my daughter joined her and now they both are participating in Triathlons and even winning their age divisions. Is it because of the book? No, it is because they are committed to succeeding and the book gave them the information they needed to do just that. No matter what book you read, it will do you no good unless you act.

Great training/coaching book!.......2007-03-31
I bought this book as a guide for me to get ready for my first triathlon. It is much better than I expected. The author gives an account of his first triathlon and how unprepared he was. He then tells you everything you'll need to prepare for. There is also a training plan in the book which I find very helpful.
very helpful guideline.......2007-03-12
To train for a triathlon in just three months time might sound very unreasonable. However, this book is not pushing the boundaries beyond extremes. Anybody finds her/his limits. I liked very much: the resistance program (including stretching) and the really helpful hints.
Great Book For Tri Beginners.......2007-03-08
If you're thinking about doing a triathlon, this is a great book. It describes in a very straight-forward manner all the different areas you will need to address in preparing for your first race.
Excellent Guide for the Beginner.......2007-01-11
I have never done a triathlon and this book was really amazing at helping understand every aspect of what to do to get ready and what to expect. It talks about equipment, nutrition, and what to expect on race day. It also includes really great workout programs for those with goals just to finish and those with specific performance goals. It also includes a training log. The only downside is that i wish tom holland provided some online resources. Other than that, I love it :)
YES! It Works!.......2006-06-18
Follow up from Austan Goolsbee in the other review--This book absolutely gives you enough training to finish. I did an olympic distance following the plan and then a half-ironman following the plan. I cannot thank Tom Holland enough. He makes things possible that eveyone else would tell you would basically require you to give up your job and all your hobbies to accomplish. I even tracked down Holland's email address and sent him a profuse thank you. I told him he made triathlon achievable for the "rest of us." If you are thinking about triathlon, you should buy this book.
