Book Description

In 1939, hatred took root in South Africa, where the seeds of apartheid were newly sown. There a boy called Peekay was born. He spoke the wrong language–English. He was nursed by a woman of the wrong color–black. His childhood was marked by humiliation and abandonment. Yet he vowed to survive–he would become welterweight champion of the world, he would dream heroic dreams.
But his dreams were nothing compared to what awaited him. For he embarked on an epic journey, where he would learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the mystical power that would sustain him even when it appeared that villainy would rule the world: The Power of One.

3 out of 5 stars "First with the Head and Then With the Heart...".......2006-11-08

There are two versions of Bryce Courtney's "The Power of One"; the original version and this, the junior novelisation. The two are quite different so make sure that you double-check what publication you're getting before you order. I would suggest the older version for most readers, since this basically tells the same story in simplified form. However, in Australia and New Zealand, "The Power of One" has reached almost cult-status in terms of popularity, and some younger readers will leap at the chance to familiarise themselves with the story before they are ready to tackle the more complex and violent subject matter of the original. Furthermore, it is a perfect choice for school libraries and/or compulsory reading in classrooms.

Like the adult version, the junior novelisation is concerned with the life of Peekay, a young boy living in 1930's South Africa, coping with racism, tension between the various social groups of the time (the Boers, the English and the Africans) and the growing threat of World War II. This younger version begins in the same place as the adult one, with Peekay being sent to a boarding school in which he is urinated on by his fellow students - a clear sign that Courtney is not prepared to soften the harshness and cruelty of the original book for the benefit of a younger audience. In comparison this story ends after the famous concert at the prison, the moment in which the adult novel really begins.

The junior novel follows Peekay's journey from childhood into earlier adolescence and the beginnings of the adult world, told in significantly less detail and in more simplified language than the first "Power of One". On the way, he makes friends from every race and class, learning the most important truth of his life: to think with his head and then with his heart. In particular, he finds work in a jail, inventing an ingenious way to help the convicts communicate with their families on the outside, and discovers the sport of boxing along with the remarkable idea that you do not have to be the biggest in order to be the best.

Courtney's gift comes from finding the grey areas in each situation, showing us clearly that one race, one country, one ideology is never wholly righteous; goodness can only come from an individual. Near the beginning of the book Peekay is persecuted by Nazi-supporters; later a dear friend of his unfairly is jailed for being a German. Humanity's overwhelming desire to classify and then judge people based on these classifications is never more frustrating than it is here, and it is a lesson well worth learning.

Although this is a more-than-adequate introductory book for younger readers eager to tackle "The Power of One", I would recommend to anyone else over the age of twelve (or any confident reader under that age) that they simply pick up the first (and best) adult version.

5 out of 5 stars growing strong.......2006-02-25

how you can feel with a little boy's hardship in a boarding school and how you hope for his stamina and how you love his intense friendships that bring him on his way.

You really live with that life and that is best a book can do.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful story of courage and change.......2006-01-14

If Bryce Courtenay's The Power Of One sounds familiar, it's because this represents a young reader's condensed edition of a prior hard-hitter which became both an adult classic and an acclaimed movie of the same name. It's great to see such a powerful novel condensed with youth in mind: grades 8-12 will find compelling the story of 1930s South Africa and a boy who faces apartheid and prejudice in a country where his childhood is marked by loneliness and dreams of changing lives. A powerful story of courage and change evolves.

2 out of 5 stars Great Novel - but CONDENSED.......2006-01-07

I have read the Power of One, the unedited version and it is brilliant, inspiring, and brutal - one of the best books I've read. However, this edition that is being sold here, is the Young Reader's edition, which isn't immediately obvious from Amazon's description or the picture. It does say so on the cover, but it's very small unless you enlarge the picture. So, my review gives it a 2 as it may be an unpleasant surprise for those who want to read the actual novel.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2005-12-24

I read this book before the crap movie was ever released, and it's a good thing, too. Whoever says the novel is dead needs to take a look at this. Courtenay has written a brilliant bildungsroman that you literally can't put down. You might even end up re-reading certain passages over and over, such as the boxing match between the protagonist and a Goliath-like opponent. If you have a bright pre-teen, give him this, and I bet he'll enjoy it.

Book Description

Muhammad Ali is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman to ever walk the earth. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN has created a work that is both epic in scale and just as unique and vibrant as the man himself. It is more than appropriate that a worthy tribute to his life would reflect the scale of his achievements, and "GOAT - Greatest of All Time" proves itself up to the task.

Four years in the making, and the most comprehensive look at Ali to date, "GOAT" tips the scales at 34 kgs (75 lbs) and is 50 cm x 50 cm (20" x 20") in size. 800 pages of archival and original photographs, graphic artwork and articles and essays - many of them previously unpublished - chronicle six decades of his life in stunning detail. To cap it all, the project takes place with the participation of Ali himself and those members of his inner circle who have been closest to him over the years: from managers and key ringside cornermen to friends, family and children; from spiritual and other advisers to broadcasters, essayists and journalists.

No stone has been left unturned in telling this remarkable story: the book features written contributions from hundreds of writers and photographers, as well as over 3,000 photographs of Ali's dazzling life. Plus Ali's own insights, writings and drawings, and reproductions of fight posters and classic memorabilia.

In addition, new work - commissioned from artist Jeff Koons - gives the Ali mythology a twenty-first-century edge and an entirely contemporary context. "GOAT" will come in two versions: the (Champ's Edition), limited to the first 1,000 copies and featuring a specially-commissioned congenial multiple by Jeff Koons as well as four silver gelatin prints by Howard L. Bingham, signed by the photographer and Ali himself. The remaining 9,000 copies come with a photo-litho made by Jeff Koons. All 10,000 copies are individually signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.

If you love Ali get his own SOul of A Buterfly or the other bio - if you can find it, as it really gest into the soul of this great man, and into his depp and abiding faith, which is a place no one any longer goes.

Of course if any of the three thousand or twelve thousand DO get to Ali and his family it will make up in a SMALL way for all the millions managers and damagers stole form him, and will get distributed to good working charitable and humanitarian organizations that actually help people, as Ali gives it all away to those in need, unless Bush has declared him officially a funder of bad and dubious causes

so if it goes to Ali, live large y'all

4 out of 5 stars G.R.O.A.T. (Greatest Review of All Time).......2006-02-03

First things first: This book has got talent. It might have once weighed in at a measily 40 pounds (500 pages), but has built up its strength and is now a strong contender. Few could question the book's power when it overcame several best sellers, rising up the non-fiction ranks like a soaring upper cut to truly punish George Foreman's jaw. The only question remaining for the experts is this: Will this book have what it takes to take on in a heavy weight bout its subject ?

5 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing book.......2005-01-24

I had a chance to check out this book at the Tattered Cover of Denver

It is MASSIVE and HUGE

The photographs inside are amazing! It definitely attracts the non-reader, and visual lover, within all of us

The price is VERY steep - only purchase if you're a REALLY big fan

Otherwise, I at least suggest that you find a copy, just to see what a really huge book, about a pretty big dude, is like ----- the book is a feat, in itself - just like Muhammad Ali

1 out of 5 stars Ali as object of conspicuous consumption.......2004-07-21

I revere Ali. I had the honor of meeting him for an author appearance for a previous photo essay book when I worked for a New York-based publisher. The Champion Edition at $10,000 and the cheaper edition at $3000 are antithetical to who the man is, or has been. He has always been a man of the people, and not a sycophant for the wealthy who buy books like they buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. If there was any information about proceeds from the sale of the books benefitting someone other than the publishers and authors I would feel differently. As it is, this is just an opportunity for those who'd have sent him to jail for avoiding the draft to own him. I'd wager that they care less about what the man stands for than that they can now own something their friends can't afford. If you love Ali and have $3000 or $10,000 to spend, give to a charity in his name.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars!.......2004-05-09

"Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali" is seventy-five pounds of the finest photos, essays and articles on the man himself. The packaging is great, with a box to protect the cover from shelf wear.

Nearly every photograph in this huge book is a work of art, many of which have never before been seen. The composition and details of the photographs are amazing. I found myself staring at them for hours.

The hefty price will scare off many, but it really is worth it. Don't forget that it comes autographed by Ali and Jeff Koons. (Meaning it will only go up in value.)

Overall, this beautiful book really is the ultimate tribute. It rates at least ten stars!

Book Description

In 1999, after a series of wildly adventurous jobs around the world, Sam Sheridan found himself in Australia, loaded with cash and intent on not working until he’d spent it all. It occurred to him that, without distractions, he could finally indulge a long-dormant obsession: fighting. Within a year, he was in Bangkok training with the greatest fighter in muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) history and stepping through the ropes for a professional bout. That one fight wasn’t enough. Sheridan set out to test himself on an epic journey into how and why we fight, facing Olympic boxers, Brazilian jiu-jitsu stars, and Ultimate Fighting champions. Along the way, Sheridan delivers an insightful look at violence as a career and a spectator sport, a behind-the-pageantry glimpse of athletes at the top of their terrifying game. An extraordinary combination of gonzo journalism and participatory sports writing, A Fighter’s Heart is a dizzying first-hand account of what it’s like to reach the peak of finely disciplined personal aggression, to hit—and be hit.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great book...........2007-10-08

Part of a journalist's trade is his/her objectivity. It is one of the things missing from this book. The author is a fine, fine writer. What he lacks is enough time in a specific discipline to take the lessons learned down to the bone, and the ability to write honestly about someone without having it come off like a magazine fluff piece.

I skipped over the animal fighting chapter...I understand why it was included, but if no one watches/bets....the sports will end...people have a choice, animals-not so much.

Keep working, Sam, you'll get better as time moves on....BTW....the older you get, the more it hurts, LOL.

1 out of 5 stars Gimme a Break.......2007-10-02

Alright, I'm picking on one little thing here. I didn't much care for this guy's portrayal of Deerfield on page 4. I was there when he was - not everyone who lived in a dorm was some "rich" person, as if that's bad anyway. Get over yourself, Sam, and feel fortunate that you received the great education that you did.

4 out of 5 stars A World Of Hurt.......2007-08-23

A Fighter's Heart isn't something that I expected it to be. While I was aware that it is a book that deals with MMA (mixed martial arts) from the author's perspective, I didn't expect it to thoroughly go on about trips to Thailand, the home of Muay Thai, journeys out west with boxing professionals, and South American & Japan jaunts focused more on Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Sam Sheridan's writing style can match the layman and his interest in combat sports. In all, a very interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars A trip through the world of fighting.......2007-07-31

The book is a vicarious journey through the world of fighting. With the rise in popularity of MMA, such themes are catching on and reflected in TV shows such as the History Channel's "Human Weapon."

The author travels around the world to practice and compete in various forms of martial arts. He goes to Thailand for Muay Thai, Iowa for MMA (from Pat Miletich of UFC fame), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) for Jiu Jitsu, New York (Manhattan) for Tai Chi, and California (Oakland) for boxing. He also travels back to Thailand for Zen meditation, as well as a stint in Hollywood as an extra in an action film starring Paul Walker.

On a higher level, the book attempts to answer philosophical questions as to why humans are attracted to violence. Part of the answer may be cultural, as societies with martial cultures have tended to conquer those without through the ages.

Overall, a good read if you have any interest in martial arts.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written book.......2007-07-09

A Fighter's Heart is a beautifully written book on a challenging subject. Sam Sheridan is a sensitive and intelligent tough guy who has left no stone unturned in this startling investigation of martial arts, the human spirit ("Gameness") and violence in general.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2006-03-16

As said before me this book lives up to its title. It is very complete, the author talks extensivly not only on every aspect of kickboxing I've ever heard of, but also of many I haven't. The book is easy to understand and the author has a unique style of writing and organization that keeps you interested. This is one of the best martial art books I've ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars A well-rounded compilation of facts.......2005-01-04

The collaborative work of martial arts experts Martina Sprague (kickboxing, modern freestyle, Kenpo karate) and Keith Livingston (kickboxing, Tae Kwon-Do, Kenpo Karate, boxing, Aikido, Ju-Jitsu, and former I.K.A. light heavyweight Rock Mountain champion), Complete Kickboxing is a "martial arts student friendly" instructional guide and reference for kickboxing techniques, concepts, sparring exercises and competition strategies. Beginning with the fundamentals of movement, stance, punching and kicking, and progressing to instructions on more advanced jump kicks and sweeps, strategies for short and long range fighting, outsmarting one's opponent, and the business mechanics of competition in the professional ring, Complete Kickboxing is an indispensible resource for novice and career kickboxers alike. A well-rounded compilation of facts, advice, and insight efficiently organized for improving one's skill and strengthening weaknesses.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-11-04

Martina Sprague's and Keith Livingston's Complete Boxing is correctly titled. First of all there are 480 pages with over 1000 photos! And the Table of Contents takes up six pages with double columns on each page. This puppy is huge but it costs only $29.95. Even if you disagreed with some of the material - not that fighters are strongly opinionated - you're still getting more than your money's worth. It's that loaded and that good.

As the title says, the book is about kickboxing, that is, full-contact fighting. Not point fighting where eight times out of 10 the technique wouldn't have had an effect. In kickboxing, the players are really hitting and trying to defeat the other fighter by hurting him so badly that he can't continue, or by knocking him out. So you're not getting foo-foo techniques here; the material in this book is designed to hurt.

The authors have been there and done that. Combining their vast experience, they have produced a tremendous book - a huge book -that will keep you reading, learning, and stealing techniques for a long time.

As a guy who has written 18 books on the martial arts and has been punching and kicking for 40 years, I highly recommend Complete Kickboxing.

Book Description

Lost in the annals of boxing is the sport's true Cinderella story. James J. Braddock, dubbed "Cinderella Man" by Damon Runyon, was a once promising light heavyweight for whom a string of losses in the ring and a broken right hand happened to coincide with the Great Crash of 1929. With one good hand, Braddock was forced to labor on the docks of Hoboken. Only his manager, Joe Gould, still believed in him, finding fights for Braddock to help feed his wife and children. The diminutive, loquacious Jew and the burly, quiet Irishman made one of boxing's oddest couples, but together they staged the greatest comeback in fighting history. In twelve months Braddock went from the relief rolls to face heavyweight champion Max Baer, the Livermore Butcher Boy, renowned for having allegedly killed two men in the ring. A charismatic, natural talent and in every way Braddock's foil, Baer was a towering opponent, a Jew from the West Coast who was famously brash and made great copy both in and out of the ring. A ten-to-one underdog, Braddock carried the hopes and dreams of the working class on his shoulders. And when boxing was the biggest sport in the world, when the heavyweight champion was the biggest star in the world, his unlikely upset made Braddock the most popular champion boxing had ever seen. Against the gritty backdrop of the Depression, Cinderella Man brings this dramatic all-American story to life, evoking a time when the sport of boxing resonated with a country trying desperately to get back on its feet. Schaap paints a vivid picture of the fight world in its golden age, populated by men of every class and ethnic background and covered voluminously by writers who elevated sports writing to art. Rich in anecdote and color, steeped in history, and full of human interest, Cinderellla Man is a classic David and Goliath tale that transcends the sport.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well Done Boxing Biography.......2007-08-11

Jeremy Schaap does a nice job of telling the story of James J. Braddock who pulled off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history on June 13, 1935 when he defeated Max Baer for the world heavyweight boxing championship. While I don't think Schaap does a wonderful job of capturing the era or the times that Braddock lived in, he does an excellent job of conveying Braddock's up and down career, his relationship with his manager Joe Gould, and the desperate straights both found themselves in during The Great Depression. It's really a heartwarming story in many ways.

Schaap also provides us a very good look at the character and career of Max Baer. In many ways Baer's career could be seen as a bit of a tragedy in that he squandered his great talent by not applying himself to the craft of boxing. Then again, he was emotionally affected by the death of Frankie Campbell after Baer knocked him out in the ring and appeared to see boxing a means to wealth and fame but didn't really like it - at least the training aspect of it. Schaap's treatment of the controversial Baer seems evenhanded and well woven into the book.

Overall, for sports and boxing enthusiasts, a definite thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella Man.......2007-02-16

Incredible descriptions of Jimmy Braddock's and Max Baer's fights. Most boxing books fail to describe the blow by blow action as well as this book does. I actually got chills reading about Braddock's jab in the early rounds of their encounter.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2006-11-01

This book is about one of the greatest sports comeback ever. Schaap not only profiles the history of boxing but gives us a quaint look at life during the 1930's depression. Jimmy Braddock, was a washed-up, underdog determined to win the title against one of the greatest boxers ever, Max Baer. Braddock was billed as a 10-to-one underdog. Baer was not only
heavily favored, but he had already killed two men in the ring. Braddock, with the help of his manager, Joe Gould makes a remarkable comeback and defeats Baer. Braddock becomes a hero and is able to get off welfare once and for all. The story is a hit, even for those who don't like boxing.

5 out of 5 stars Cinderella Man:James Braddock, Max Baer, and the Greatest Upset in Boxing History.......2006-08-28

I haven't had time to read the book yet but it arrived very quickly, wich pleased me.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-02-27

If you liked the movie you will love the book. The book goes into much greater detail about the man and the time period. Also, if you want to know more about Max B. you will not be disappointed. He was unfairly shown in the movie as a one dimensional bad guy.

If you want to step into a time machine and see what boxing was like in the late 20's and early 30's, this one is for you. I could not put it down till I was done.

Book Description

What would legendary Boston Celtics coach and 16-time NBA champion Red Auerbach say is the most critical quality for a person to be successful? Would his advice differ from 10-time NCAA championship coach John Wooden's? What would each say to a young person just starting out in pursuit of their dreams? What is the best advice they were ever given?

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

3 out of 5 stars Dont hold your breath.......2007-07-03

I bought this book expecting it to have a lot of new information. If you have spent any time in a boxing gym, you will already know 75% of the book. A few new items and drills. Way too many pictures in my opinion. Need more instruction and a few relevant pictures.

4 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-01-16

I recommend anything from mark hatmaker, the guy really knows his stuff, and knows how to present it. This is imho the best single volume guide on boxing. Stance, footwork, punches, defense, history, tips, training tips, all covered. His penchant for true boxing of the golden age gives this book that extra charm, in addition to its top notch instruction and information. If youre a fan of boxing, get this , if youre into mma, buy all his books.

5 out of 5 stars complete and concise.......2007-01-06

Very good reference book and does a good job of explaining the key point to every technique.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect book for shadowboxing.......2007-01-04

I have this boxing manual for more than a year now. It's perfect if you tend to shadowbox to work your boxing skills. You get a good workout yet boxing correctly in its format. Perfect manual for novice to advanced boxer. It also goes well with Hatmaker's other manual on Savage Strikes, more of freestyle, NHB fighting. I read this boxing manual numerous times when I have time available and tend to shadowbox as a workout to work on my boxing form and getting my cardio that way. So if you have some boxing skills, whether you've been taught by your dad or mom in some cases or at a boxing gym this book is perfect to go along with your skill to improve boxing. Sweet science at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent book on the basics of Boxing. It is well written and very detailed. The numerous photos are helpful. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in learning or expanding their boxing.

5 out of 5 stars going, going, gone!.......2005-10-19

This is hands down the best boxing book i've ever read! not to vague like most boxing instuction books. i recommend it to all my students as a guide. if you like this book i strongly encourage you to consider fighting fit. it's the sequel to boxer's start-up. both books don't take anything for granted. it's easy to follow, filled with practical advise and in perfect sequence. buy this book!!

4 out of 5 stars A really good read and introduction to the sport.......2005-08-02

This was a really easy read and enjoyable book. The points and presentation are first class and explained very well.

On the whole a really good introduction to Boxing and its nuances.

5 out of 5 stars Boxing Hopefuls - Welcome To The Basics.......2004-02-04

I really liked this book.

The first 2 chapters are an introduction to boxing and what equipment you'll need as you go deeper into training.

Chapter 3 through chapter 10 are the fundamentals - from stance (very important) through sparing.

Each function and mechanic of a technique is described very well and great and useful detail is given.

The section regarding wrapping your hands - don't worry too much if you don't get it here. It takes a while to figure out how to wrap. They have dvd's and videos dedicated to just wrapping your hands so don't stress out.

The writing has personality and the teaching isn't preachy or too butch or too vague. It's a nice and easy introduction to the fundamentals. Again - this is a beginners guide and is really for the beginner - NOT exclusively as I got some good detail regarding throwing a hook punch.

Also the pace of the book builds as your skill builds - the order of chapters and tools taught are exactly where they should be.

Chapter 11 is a brief history of boxing which I enjoyed.

Chapter 12 consists of the author's journal entries(a newcomer to boxing)- they are his first 6 months of lesson's with Alan Lachica - who sounds like one very cool guy and one of the best coaches out there for those interested in practicing the Sweet Science.

Great book for the beginner

5 out of 5 stars Exellent instruction.......2003-09-04

I have previously thought that you simply can not learn a new physical skill by just reading a book. After being introduced to Boxer's start-up my opinion has changed. The book is filled with exellent photography to support the text, and you really can learn the techniques from just reading the book!

The book can be divided into three parts. The first part covers about 100 pages, and it is the actual instructional part of the book. It covers everything from the ground up (boxing gear, stance & footwork, the punches, punching combinations, hitting the bag, defense & counters, sparring, and so on). The second part is really just one chapter, and it covers the essential history of boxing, including the greatest fighters. The third part is shortened version of the author's diary, covering his experiences on learning to box. This part is about 35 pages long, and it's a matter of taste if this is too much. On the other hand, you don't learn much from reading this, but on the other hand it is fun to read other beginner's experiences.

In conclusion, I have to say that I was impressed with this book. It's amazing how good an intruction you can get from reading a book. Compared to the instruction I got from my beginner's boxing class, I think I learned more from this book.

5 out of 5 stars great book on the basics.......2003-01-02

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning to box, as well as for martial artists interested in more practical striking and footwork.

If you're serious about learning to do it right though, find a qualified trainer. Books are great supplements to qualified instruction, but even well written ones like this can never replace it.

Book Description

Dave Zirin provides a knowledgeable, analytic, sports-aficionado's journey through the starry trajectory of Ali's boxing career. Included are informative insights into Ali's relationship with Malcolm X, his personal journey within the Nation of Islam, and the moral crisis that brought him face to face with losing his boxing career (and millions of dollars) for his religious principles. Zirin offers intelligent, accurate assessment of Ali's extraordinary political involvement in the anti-Vietnam war protest and the Civil Rights movement in the USA. Includes unique interviews with famous sportswriters who followed Muhammad Ali from his early days, including Robert Lipsyte; Dave Kindred; Mike Marqusee; veteran journalist Lester Rodney; Ali's biographer, Thomas Hauser.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning photos and essays.......2007-04-03

So I am a big fan of radical sportswriter Dave Zirin and his book did not disappoint. More than his essays and interviews on Ali, I was blown away by the color and black and white photos. Ali at a Palestinian rights demo? It's here. Ali with Martin Luther King? Malcolm X? It's here. Original interviews with Bob Lipsyte, Etan Thomas, and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad? It's here.

My only minor complaint is that the serious SERIOUS Ali fan will know many of the stories Zirin tells. But others will be blown away.

A rather remarkable - and affordabe - hardcover book, it's everything the $10,000 GOAT book should have been.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I expected.......2006-01-01

The author packs an awful lot of information into the text; there's hardly any gratuitous fluff. She covers basic boxing equipment, how to wrap the hands (three different ways shown), basic stance & footwork, basic punches & combos, very basic defense, different styles & ring strategy, and physical training. That last part is given the most space in the book. That's what makes the book a little confusing; it's hard to tell if the author is trying to produce another "boxercise" book (as advertising indicates: "The Ultimate Workout!") or is trying to give an introduction to fight training. If it's the former, there's a lot of unneccessary sections on strategy & equipment that someone just doing a routine for excercise wouldn't need; if it's the latter, there's really not much info on the psychology of a fighter, on having the discipline to train for a fight, on finding the right gym & living the fighter's life. While the author highlights some very important points and corrects common mistakes that begginers make as she goes along, I just get the sense that in trying to cater to both the "I don't want to be hit" gym rat and the "where's the ring, lemme fight" potential boxer, she ends up taking away a little from both. Speaking as a martial artist and someone who trains for fights, I'd still recomend this book to anyone who wanted to learn the basics of boxing for fighting (and learn them WELL), or someone who wants to add a little recreational boxing into their workout routine. It could easily be a textbook for the physical aspects of boxing training, though I'd prefer Mark Hatmaker's "Boxing Mastery" for a concentration on the fight game and Ned Beaumont's "Championship Streetfighting" for the use of boxing in self-defense.

1 out of 5 stars Put down the book and pick up the gloves.......2005-04-02

I picked this book up in the city library because I've boxed as an amateur for a few years. Understanding that this book only covered the basics, I was still disappointed. The outline of different training exercises was practical, but the notion that anyone could learn anything about stance; positioning and correct form from a book is simply stupid.

This book seemed superficial and had that cash-in-rush-it-on-the-market feel. Not only that, but you can find ALL of the information contained in this book, on the net. Put down the book and pick up the gloves folks and step into a gym, it's the only way to learn.

No one should write more than 50 pages about boxing technique unless they've boxed more than 50 rounds. Case closed.

5 out of 5 stars A book any beginner boxer can get excited about.......2004-12-12

MUST MUST read instruction for beginners... I recommend it to all amateurs in my trainer course!

3 out of 5 stars Ross Enamait's Books are far better.......2004-06-07

In my opinion, the best bang for the buck when it comes to boxing and martial art information is written by Ross Enamait. His products can be viewed at www.rossboxing.com. The forum there is also great. Check it out before you purchase anything else. I think you will be very impressed. I know for a fact that I was, and I own and have read countless boxing and martial arts "how to" books.

2 out of 5 stars Meh, you can't learn to box from a book.......2004-03-22

I'm an MMA fan, and I wholey agree that boxing is an integral part of the standup game (maybe more than Muay Thai) but I don't think you can get it from a book. If you want to learn to box I suggest you get to a gym. this book is good in that it gives you a lot of the basics and even the more in depth information on the intricacies of punches is good, BUT unless you have somebody who can coach you through your development, you're gonna suck at boxing, no question about it.

In MMA I would say that books on grappling are a better use of your money because you can reference back to them for pointers on the hundreds of techniques you can use, however in boxing there are less than 10 common punches, and you have to MASTER those punches (as well as movement, footwork and an assortment of other things) to learn to box well. Mastery of anything requires tutorial that can't be found in a book no matter how in depth. Bottom line: the information is good, but you'd be better off spending this money on a membership to a boxing gym.
