Old book, basic information.......2007-04-08
If you are curious about polymer and want in depth reading then you will enjoy this book. I like projects and applications. I have read parts of this book but it didn't tell me what I didn't all ready know or didn't much care about.
Sarah understands us--the judgement jumpers............2007-03-21
Sarah hit the nail on the head, so to speak. I made exactly that mistake (looking at the pictures when it arrived from Amazon) and since I wanted to make jewelry, boxed it up to send it back. It said "Jewelry Making" on the cover but had pictures of everything but jewelry. I was very disappointed.
But I procrasinated. I had waited too long to send it back so I sat down with it and began to read. Praise be!
Nan Roche completely explained her choice of photographs and just about everything else I need to know about polymer clay. She is clear, concise and has a way of commenting on her personal life that makes you think of her has a friend or well-loved teacher. This book was the first and best.
A Classic!.......2006-11-17
What a great how-to book! Perfect for beginners! Polymer clay can be quite addictive and you will want to make everything! Although this book was published in '92, do not let mislead you into thinking that there are newer better books now....this is a classic! Very clear instructions for the newbie! enjoy!
A WINNER.......2006-09-26
I bought three books on Polymer Clay, and this is the only one with all the techniques there that I want to learn.
Looks a little difficult for a beginner, but at least I know I have a true encyclopedia of knowledge here. I don't have to go out and buy a whole list of other products to make the items presented in the book.
Thank you , Nan Roche for making a true classic!
Polymer Clay Bible.......2006-07-15
Everyone starting out in polymer clay should have this book in their library. Many newer techniques have been developed since this book came out but this book contains everything you need in order to develop your own original work. If you're looking for a "projects" book skip this, but if you want the basics this is the book for you. I only wish Nan Roche would write another! I still find myself refering to it and I've been working in polymer clay for over 15 years.
Book Description
This first extensive survey of the work of Petra Blaisse, the internationally known Dutch garden and interior designer, comes at the right time. Blaisse, who has been collaborating with Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture and other major architectural concerns for many years, just finished her largest and best-known project in the U.S., the much-lauded Seattle Public Library's gardens and interior. A "library" of local plant life surrounds the building, and a tiled carpet designed after a garden leads patrons in. Blaisse is passionate about uniting interior and exterior space. She sees them as continuous, and says of her unusual synergy of design roles, that "They are totally different professions, yet they are completely connected: open the window and the garden comes in, the curtain comes out." Her work, situated in the margin between design and architecture, indicates new directions and possibilities for each field. A conversation between Blaisse and curator Kayoko Ota runs throughout Inside Outside, while the balance of the book documents 20 projects ranging from contained interior interventions to larger landscape designs, each described in photography, sketches and drawings.
Book Description
“There’s nothing better than an author who’s made all the mistakes herself, has taught hundreds of others, and writes with humor. Chris James fills the bill. This beautiful book talks about knits, rolled hems, and flatlocking. At the end is a trouble-shooting guide....The close-up color photos make her text even more understandable....highly recommended.”—The Creative Machine. “The most comprehensive reference on serging to date.”—Craft & Needlework Age.
Customer Reviews:
Tiny frustration.......2007-09-23
This handbook has great color photos, and much helpful advice. I am, however, frustrated by a sentence concerning the handling of knits that begins at the bottom of page 108 yet has no end at the top of 109.
Ultimate Surger Guide-is the ultimate.......2007-05-17
I am a beginner and my teacher used this book in my surger class-she told me to buy it and read it like a college text book, complete with highlighting passages. I did and WOW. I refer to it often-the photos are detailed and directions complete and easy to follow and understand. A lot of shortcuts are included as well. I highly recommend this book for all ages of surgers!
Wonderful resource for beginners.......2006-08-08
This books picks up where the instruction manual leaves off. I recently purchased a serger and this book helped me to familiarize myself with the machine, different types of threads and the various types of stitches that can be made with a serger. The photos and clearly written instructions in each chapter made me very comfortable with my machine. The author provides the right amount of detail to guide you step-by-step without becoming overwhelmed. I highly recommend this book to beginners, but it's also a good resource for the more advanced.
New to serging? This is THE book........2003-12-10
This book is the perfect book for a beginner serger owner. Serger manuals are useful for getting to know the mechanics of your serger, but leave off after listing the basic stitches and settings. Serging really is different than sewing, and this book of Chris James' teaches you everything else you need to know to become very adept at using your machine. The close-up photos really illustrate what the stitches should and shouldn't look like. Her book also helps you understand how the machine works, which in turn allows you to master your machine (rather than merely follow the settings in your manual). She offers many, many tips and how-tos, and her samples are inspirational. I have noticed several small mistakes, such as a mismatch of needle sizes (she says 80/14 and 90/16 rather than 80/12 and 90/14, and at least one of her rolled hem close-ups is mislabeled.) Don't let that stop you from purchasing this book however.
I teach serger classes to new serger owners and much of what I discuss comes from this book. I also have the "Serger Secrets" book. It shows more specific applications; very useful as well. I also refer to my "Polar Fleece Adventures" series by Nancy Cornwall often as I serge with fleece frequently.
This is IT for beginners!.......2003-03-04
This told me EVERYTHING to begin serging, practically from taking it out of the box. It discusses everything from turning the machine on and off, to threading for different stiches, the differences between stitches, good fabric to use versus good fabric for regular sewing, etc. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the complete novice.

Customer Reviews:
Very good for young girls growing.......2007-09-08
Why I bought this book because I need it for my reference for current project. I love the illustrations and contents. Stacy Peterson is my favorite illustrator. This is a very colorful and educational book for young girls. I love it!
Great book .......2007-06-16
My [....] and I are really enjoying reading this book. While it is aimed, I think, at slightly older girls, We are reading it and talking about how to handle certain situations, how to start up conversations with girls you don't know, etc. I think it is a great starting point for girls who are just starting to be faced with girlie friendship dilemmas.
A fun way to learn about friendships.......2007-05-13
This is a great book if your child needs some help in understanding the lines in friendships and how to conduct them. It gently explains the dos and don'ts in a way that will appeal to younger girls.
Book Description

Both beginning and advanced whittlers will benefit from this updated edition, which includes both basic techniques and complex patterns.
Customer Reviews:
Basic whittling.......2007-08-15
Now I just recently started woodcarving and my wife bought me this book as a gift. I must say it is an interesting book for what it covers. Basically the author shows you how to pick out twigs and branches to make the birds featured in this book. The cuts seem basic and with a glance at them it seems that it would just be a matter of practicing to duplicate his work.
If you go camping and want something to do around a camfire, this might be the book for you.
Too limited to be worth it........2007-05-07
What you see on the cover pretty much is the whole book. The book mainly shows how to make a few birds. Not worth buying in my opinion.
Whittling Twigs & Branches.......2007-02-17
For anyone who likes to go for nature walks and collect twigs and branches and do some whittling with them, then this is the book to get.
Easy to follow and read, very good.
A "Must-Have" whittler's book........2005-11-30
I recently purchased this book after seeing Chris Lubkemann demonstrate his rooster carving techniques on the FYI channel. With the help of this book and a little previous wood working experience, I was able to whittle three roosters and a hen from branches collected in my own yard. This book is a tidy, complete, well-illustrated user's guide to whittling twigs and branches. He provides clear step-by-step instructions, and openly shares his opinions and experiences with various types of wood, knives, finishes, etc. As with all really good reference works, I find myself going back and forth between whittling and re-reading the book. I learn something new with each closer look at these pages. Lubkemann's rocking chair philosophy explores what an average person can accomplish with a twenty-dollar pocket knife and a few branches that are absolutely free. I applaud not only his uncluttered approach to this noble craft, but his genuine desire to pass it along to anyone who is interested. An aside: this book is an excellent gift idea for anyone interested in folk art, woodcraft, or chickens.
Book Description
From preparatory drawings and modeling to the many finishes that make completed carvings glow, here’s how you go about creating the actual project. Learn the differences between soft and hard woods, how to deal with defects such as splitting and knots, and discover how grain, hardness, texture and durability figure into your work. Photos guide you along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing else like it!.......2006-06-06
Very comprehensive set about carving tools equipment etc.
Both books together really gives you all you will need to know to get started and going the rest of your life...
Chris Pye is very thorough in his writing with high attention to detail, as can be witnessed in his other books also.
MUST HAVE PART 2.......2004-03-16
THIS BOOK IS A TRUUE MUST HAVE. I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARVING PART OF WOODWORKING. BEING THIS MY SECOND BOOK I TRULY KNEW WHAT TO GO AFTER, WHAT I WANTED AND HOW TO GET THE BEST OF IT. WILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS READ AND VOLUME ONE ALSO BEOFRE TRYING ANYBODY ELSE'S BOOKS.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent intermediate to advanced text.......2007-10-02
This book adopts a cookbook approach. The book briefly explains the basics to get you grounded in the material. But quickly thereafter, the book takes a leap to address intermediate builders. The assumption is that online resources will help bridge the gap. Its an approach that works.
Roughly a third of the Idea Book contains a number of tips and techniques for using the kit.
The remaining two thirds of the book (Part II) is dedicated to building eight robots of varying complexity.
Outstanding introduction to Mindstorms programming.......2007-09-30
I found this to be a very unique book. Many of the other Lego Mindstorms books I have reviewed focus on simply building a cool robot. While building a cool robot is certainly one of the reasons builders like Mindstorms so much, it's not the only reason. This book also focuses on the programming of these robots, which is something I haven't seen adequately covered in any other Mindstorms book.
In fact, this one point--learning how to program your robot--is really the focus of this book. All the models deal with getting your robot's sensors and Bluetooth ability to work as seamlessly as possible--all while accomplishing the specific task the robot was designed for.
While the models are all very interesting (a 3D photo assistant, a crane, a slot machine, etc), the real jewels of this book are the programming and debugging techniques used for Mindstorms. In fact, the first third of the book focuses on how sensors work, how to program them, and how they can be debugged. Without a doubt, this is the best discussion of the subject I've seen anywhere. Period.
My only complaint about the book is that the building instructions are done in black and white (instead of the color instructions provided by Lego). I think most people interested in this type of book would be willing to pay a few extra bucks for color pictures. While the lack of color is certainly a strike against this book, it is not enough to tarnish an otherwise brilliantly executed book. This book is highly recommended not just for the models, but for the outstanding discussion of Mindstorms programming.
Book Description
From coast to coast, home boatbuilders have turned to Chris Kulczycki for everything they needed to know about making their own kayaks from high-grade marine plywood and epoxy. In The Kayak Shop, a long-time popular standard, Kulczycki provided explicit directions and plans for building three sea kayaks: a high-performance single, an expedition single, and a touring double. The New Kayak Shop details three new Kulczycki designs that are more elegant and even more suitable for today’s paddlers. The building instructions are also updated, with new sections on paint and varnish, seat construction, power tools, computer programs for amateur designers, and tips on building multi-chine and round-bottom boats. The New Kayak Shop offers the best, most refined designs and building methods in a single, accessible volume.

kayak shop.......2007-01-15
This is a good book. Clear conceptions are presented. Good ideas and techicnics. building plans are a little limiteds and you will need some skill to make it usefull, but this is a book to people who has some skill. So the middle point is that books makes directions in sale building plans, may be this is the better idea to a kayak homemade. Plans could be more clear and you don't need to use a lent to read this font numbers or break your mind thinking how do somethings. To avoid this you will need to buy authors building plans.
Very good book for those who want to learn the stitch&glue method and have no background .......2007-01-10
The Kayak plans are detailed enough. No need to order the plans separately.
I think that if you don't have any background in stitch&glue it is a good start with.
I have found the book very useful.
Good Book that will help yo build a Beautiful Wooden Kayak.......2003-10-23
This book is a complete presentation of what you will beed to do to build a stich and glue kayak, beginning to end. The designs in the boat are suitable for beginner and intermediate paddlers. People with even modest amounts of woodworking aptuitude will be able to build boats from this book if you can make the time and money committments, in my experience begin at 100 hours and $500. Tool requirements are modest, mostly hand tools, and are discussed in the book.
I built another of Chris K's designs using plans supplied by Chesapeake Light Craft after reading this book. Note that you can get a great deal of additional information from additional sources. The Builder's Forum on Cheaspeake Light Craft's website - www.clcboats.com - contains a wealth of info about building these boats. Please note that CLC is the company that Chris K founded - he has since sold the company, and the current management continues to introduce additional designs. A very large community of CLC builder/owners provide feedback on building issues continuously. Another source - I found it helpful to purchase the full size plans for the particular design I wanted from CLC, which was not included in this book. More on designs below. For $75, you can get the plans and a detailed manual for the design you want. (Note that if you buy plans from CLC, you are entitled to their very good technical support via telephone and email). I found the plans useful, but you can build straight from this book. The boatbuilding forum on www.kayakforum.com also serves a large community of kayakbuilders that are quite ready to answer questions.
Kayaks are like sneakers - they come in particular sizes to fit the paddler, and are designed for particular uses. There are plans for three designs in this book, but do be aware that CLC also has about 20 other kayak designs of various sizes and purposes in their line-up, so don't limit your options by sticking to the plans in the book if it is not going to be the best boat for you. That said, the three designs in the book are as follows: The Severn, a 14 foot, very light kayak for calm water use; the Chesapeake 16, a touring kayak that is probably CLC's most versatile design; and the West River 180, a faster, narrower, and less stable boat better suited for kayakers with some experience. Regarding the Severn, it is harder to build than other CLC designs. If you are interested in a flatwater boat, CLC's current Mill Creek 13 is more versatile and much more stable, is easier to build, and has a large cockpit opening. It is a great boat for beginners and fishermen. If you want a small decked kayak, their 14 foot Chesapeak design is a better choice. I do not think that the Severn ever developed much of a following. Plans for this boat are no longer published by CLC.
The Chesapeake 16 is a good all around touring kayak, and has a lot of storage room. Be aware that is it a large volume boat and is sutiable for heading out loaded with camping gear. It works as an unloaded day boat, but not as well as lower volume kayaks. Plans for this boat continue to be sold by CLC, and many of these have been built to date.
The West River 180 is a fast narrow, tippier boat that can cover a lot of ground quickly. It is, conversly, hard to turn. It is also one of the sleekest looking stitch and glue kayaks. CLC recently retired this design, replaceing it with the updated WR 18, which reportedly offers handling improvements.
CLC holds free demos where you can try out their various boats. These are regularly scheduled in Annapolis, Maryland, and are occassionaly held in various other parts of the country seasonally - check their website for details. If you can't get to a demo, check out the CLC Owner's Club at the website to find a builder near you for the design you are interested - many folks would let you see or try the CLC boat they built themselves.
Finally, if you are new to kayaking and kayak building, it is relatively easy to learn to build and paddle these boats. It is much harder to develop good judgement as to safety in various wind and water conditions. If you are new to this sport, please develop safe practices and judgement by taking lessons, joining a kayking club, and/or reading books dealing with the subject. "Sea Kayaker: Deep Trouble", available right here on Amazon, analyzes a number of sea kayaking accidents, including many fatalities. Amazon sells other good kayaking books as well. If you don't think that kayaking can be dangerous, or that it won't happen to you, you are in over your head, are at risk for mishaps, and owe it to yourself to get educated about how not to become a statistic. This is a great sport that is safe when practiced prudently, however, unfortunately, people die each and every year by being ignorant of the hazards.
Happy building and paddling.
Steve C
Great book with only one gripe..........2003-01-30
My one gripe is that the plans included with the book are close to useless. They're on tiny paper, and need to be severely enlarged before they can be used.
Other than that, this book is an excellent look at what goes into building a stitch and glue kayak. I've built a boat designed by this author, using only plans purchased through the resources listed in the book, and spent many hours on Long Island Sound, the Connecticut River, and the Texas Gulf Coast enjoying slipping silently through the water.
The time estimates are correct, even for someone who is only moderately familiar with wood-working. His materials lists are complete, and the recommendations made are worth paying attention to. In my building, I went contrary to a couple of the book's reccommendations; in hindsight, I would have followed the book much more closely.
A valuable read for the novice boat builder........2001-09-10
I'm planning to build one of Chesapeake Light Craft's Mill Creek kayaks this winter. I've been reading the CLC forums, the many customer web sites and the back issues of Wooden Boat magazine with articles on building CLC boats, but the most helpful read so far has been this book.
There is a lot to learn about boat building, from techniques to vocabulary. This book will help you build a knowledge base to take on the project of building your own kayak.
Thanks to Chris for this helpful guide!

Good beginners guide.......2007-09-30
I went to a local wood hobby shop and looked at several carving/whittling books. This one looked good so I bought it on ebay and saved some $s.
I'm a total novice, so this book was perfect. Full of photographs that explain every step. No previous experience necessary. Tip: I've managed to cut myself a few times so I'm wearing gloves until my technique improves. A very relaxing pastime. Highly recommended. If you are wondering which beginners book to buy then buy this.
Good book.......2007-05-31
If you are new to whittling (like me) this was a good book to get started on. Lots of things that you can make right away.
The Little Book of Whittling.......2007-01-04
GREAT book for beginning/intermediate whittler! Got this for my 8-year-old grandson for Christmas along with Smoky Mountain Whittler (knife), and he was thrilled! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Thanks!
Didn't blow my mind.......2007-01-03
Although I can't say the book is bad, it was not what I was expecting.
I was expecting a manual that would allow me to pick up my pocket knife and start working on my first piece :-)
Having said that, the book does give a nice general overview of the subject of whittling.
great for beginners.......2006-08-01
This book has very detailed instructions accompanied by step-by-step photographs. It teaches you how to carve several different things (spoons, forks, knives, stick figures, flowers, and walking sticks among them) from twigs.
