"This book will save you money and grief before you can say woven roving."--Sailing

"A comprehensive and accurate work that should benefit almost any owner of a fiberglass boat."--SAIL

"This book will prove a valuable addition to the library of any boat builder or owner who is seriously interested in doing his own repairs, as well as intercepting minor problems before they become major projects."--Boatbuilder

Are there hairline cracks in your boat's deck or topsides gelcoat? Have her color and luster faded over the years? Does she have deck leaks? Has she been holed? Is her hull oilcanning in a sea? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, this book is for you. This is the definitive guide for fiberglass boat repair and beautification, covering not just cosmetic dings and scratches, but also major repairs of structural damage to hull and decks. It will show you how to:

That beautiful craft swinging at anchor or nestled dockside, her topsides reflecting water and sky like a polished mirror, could be yours. Here's how.

This is a very old book as far as fiberglass boats go.Must later prcedures, and products not included. There is some usefull info in the book

3 out of 5 stars I think there are better books out there . . ........2001-02-05

This is a good book. It is complete, to be sure. For the expert fiberglass repair person, I cannot speak, but it is certainly difficult to read for an amateur. Generally, a bit much to swallow. I think that other books have similar information more elegantly stated. The fault is not with the content, but the presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Also Valuable When Buying A Used Boat!.......2000-02-06

Of the many boatbuilding and repair manuals I have seen, I would consider this to be the best reference for fiberglass boat repair. The pictures on the dust-jacket alone indicate that a serious treatise is contained within. It would appear that no matter how bad it looks, there is no problem beyond the scope of the competent fiberglass repairman. (Caution - some of the color photos of repairs-in-progress between pages 118 and 119 are not for the faint-hearted!)

Mr. Vaitses has been at this for a long time and with experience in the world of wooden boats (all boats have wood in them somewhere) as well as having been a player in the fiberglass revolution, is able to offer a well-rounded perspective. His honest, no-nonsense approach to problem-solving is refreshing.

Besides the obvious background info and how-to descriptions, this book can be an invaluable asset when examining a used boat. Mr. Vaitses is currently working as a marine surveyor (a person who inspects and evaluates the condition of boats for prospective buyers). All used boats need some kind of work and the challenge then becomes evaluating the nature and scope of needed repairs, e.g. distinguishing structural and safety issues from cosmetics and determining whether one can affect the repairs oneself vs. how much it will cost to have someone else do it.

Studying this book allows one to communicate more effectively with the surveyor and to describe problems more accurately to repair facilities in order to estimate projected costs. We recently completed the evaluation and purchase of a 1974 36-foot fiberglass cruiser. I can honestly say that the knowledge and confidence I gained from this book made the entire process a good bit less nerve-racking than it might have been!

Book Description

A fiberglass hull's seamless nature leads many boatowners to conclude that repair must be difficult. Wrong. Here, clearly and abundantly illustrated, is all you need to know to seal joints, bed hardware, replace portlights, locate leaks, fix cracks and even holes, restore your hull's gloss, renew nonskid decks, and much more. You'll wonder what you were worried about.

Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.

5 out of 5 stars Go ahead and get the grinder!.......2006-07-20

A sweet book that gave me the confidence to 'go for it' and tackle some ugly holes in my dinghy hull. What's more it was not that bad after all! It's all here, from finishing the gelcoat scrapes/cracks to repairing gaping holes- you may want to buy in conjunction with 'sailboat refinishing' to help with that final effort. Fully recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Good advice.......2006-07-14

This book covers the basic as well as some advanced topics about repairing all types of fiberglass hulls, decks, through hull fittings, teak wood, and other related topics. I recommend the book for the beginner who needs basic information about fiberglass repair.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd best book on Fiberglass repairs, and not just for sailboats.......2006-03-08

While I actually like "Fiberglass Repair: Polyester or Epoxy" by David and Zora Aiken a touch better than this book, they are both strong. They both have lots of clear ILLUSTRATIONS, which to my mind are preferable to photos at depicting this sort of information.

Blister repair (not addressed at all in older books on fiberglass repeair), wet deck cores, gelcoat cosmetics are all covered, as well as a good discussion of when to use Epoxy resins versus the cheaper Polyesters. I recommend this book for owners of ALL fiberglass boats, as the construction and repairs are quite universal.

The relatively large format of this book helps the clarity of the drawings, and makes it possible to imagine using it like a cookbook, propped open on the workbench as you step through the steps.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of fiberglass repairs.......2001-10-04

Covers all the areas I needed. Soft & rotten cores, broken fiberglass, chipping, etc. I liked it so much I just ordered his book on refinishing.

Book Description

Of all the improvements to a tired-looking boat, none will have a more dramatic impact than refinishing. And few boat tasks are easier. This is a combination forged in Valhalla, which makes it surprising that Sailboat Refinishing is the first basic book on the subject. Author Don Casey focuses on the hulls, decks, cabins, spars, and wood trim of fiberglass boats. Painting, varnishing, repairing gelcoat, and applying hull graphics are all covered with step-by-step illustrated instructions.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth A dime.......2004-12-23

This little, with the emphasis on little, pamphlet/book, is more suited as a cash register handout or fifty cent bargain bin item, than it is to be called a book. No disrespect is intended, however you cannot glean any worthwile information or expand your knowledge through reading this. I am an extremely slow reader, and completed the book in it's entirity on a 2 hour flight with time to spare. I am looking forward to getting Nigel Calders book on boat electrical systems as I thought his two on diesel engines and refrigeration systems for boats were excellent.

5 out of 5 stars In clear terms with an emphasis on practical application.......2004-01-14

Written by professional marine electrical engineer and surveyor John C. Payne, Understanding Boat Wiring is a no-nonsense technical coverage of boat wiring standards, basic electrical principles, system voltages, the nuts and bolts of installing boat wiring, how to safely ground systems and more. Written in clear terms with an emphasis on practical application, Understanding Boat Wiring is a superb reference and "user friendly" resource which is enhanced with numerous diagrams to make its instructional information especially easy-to-follow. Also very highly recommended for all boat owners and operators is John C. Payne's Understanding Boat Batteries And Battery Charging.

Book Description

Larry Pardey is accepted as one of the master craftsmen of the wooden-boat building world. He and his wife, Lin, have built two strong, handsome boats and sailed twice around the world in them. This impressive book shows the process of constructing a boat hull with extensive photographs and drawings and includes ample time-saving procedures. From financial and time planning, lofting, floors and framing, selection of materials, planking and spiling, design consideration, to deck beams, man-hour norms, and details critical to wooden boat construction, this volume serves as the most comprehensive guide a potential builder could ever use.Readers will also appreciate the discussions of how to select from numerous construction methods and materials, how to set up the shop, and tips for sharpening and making your own tools. The new appendix on proper adhesive selection is must reading for those wishing to have a boat that stays together, no matter how long or where its used. Anyone who has dreamed of building a boat or would like to make his or her own repairs-but has felt restricted by the potential costs of gathering the materials and figuring out how to do the work-will be thrilled by this informative and comprehensive book, written by an internationally recognized shipwright who understands a beginners needs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful........2007-10-18

With this book in addition to Chapelle's and Stewart's books, I am beginning to grasp round bottom traditional wood construction.

4 out of 5 stars Its a classic!.......2007-07-26

Its a great book if your want to build wooden boats in the most traditional way or with an archaic manner. Most wooden boat builders today can cut time by using modern equipment and techniques which is not described in this book. Its a good reference book and it includes a topic on the author's experience using modern epoxies and it contains Herreshoff rules/guidelines which every classic boatbuilder enthusiast might find informative. It will also describe you the events that you will go through if you're building a cruising boat. This book is not for the beginner for the terminology used will confuse them. In my opinion, if you would want to build a classic wooden boat I suggest you go through a weekend workshop (for the curious) or an apprenticeship (for a career) then buy this book to supplement what you've learned. Like the author said, "There is no such thing as a comprehensive book on any type of boat building." Your best chance to build your own dream boat is to get out there, learn from others, and supplement what you've learned with this book!

3 out of 5 stars Hard Core.......2007-02-06

I have read at least 5 (maybe more) books on home boat building. Where this book does a superior job is in its prolific use of photographs to demonstrate the steps discussed in the text. Pardey's is a good book but a bit on the "HARD CORE" side. For instance how many "one-off" builders are going to go to the trouble of forging our own magnesium alloy floor brackets? If you are serious about building your own boat I'd still recommend reading this book but it should not be the first you read. In my opinion, Pardey's book is not intended for the rank armature. In fact you have to be fairly familiar with, carpentry, boats, and boat building terminology in order to follow the book at all. I still encountered JARGON that was unfamiliar to me. If I were the editor of this book I'd recommend a comprehensive GLOSSARY OF TERMS be added at the end of the book. That one addition would greatly increase the utility of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Covers a lot on Classical Hull Construction.......2005-09-05

Larry Pardey book is the definitive guide on Carvel Plank construction, he takes you through the building process of their 30' Talesin.

Besides is Epoxy-phobia, there are great tips and considerations when building a boat. If you plan on building even a strip plank, Larry's book will give you tips to avoid the mistakes that have often destroyed a home builders dreams or wasted a lot of wood.

The short coming of this book is that the deck is only modestly covered and it stops at the hull. Mr. Pardey has yet to put out the other part that covers the interior and rigging. So you will find some questions unanswered.

5 out of 5 stars The way it's done........2004-12-08

What to say about this book...it shows you wooden boat construction at its very, very best. Starting with raw lumber and simple hand tools, Larry Pardey takes us, step by laborious step, on the odyssey of building a truly world class cruising yacht, his 30' Taleisin. Not only is every step of the hull construction detailed, but we also get "real world" time and cost estimates so there are no illusions as to how much time and money each step will take. There are superb "pro and con" treatments of aspects that have a variety of solutions. If there are multiple ways to tackle a job, he makes two columns and discusses the pros and cons of each in detail. Usually you just get the author's opinions without any extra information.

This book is famous also because of it's very important final appendix on epoxies in salt water craft, and how epoxy often is weakened to the point of failure by salt water, repeated stress, and heat - 3 things that a sailboat gets plenty of. I am told by many epoxy fans that this chapter "is now out of date", but I don't remember any amazing new epoxies coming out that make Pardey's findings defunct. George Buehler says it best - epoxy works best when it's backed up by a bolt. "Praise epoxy but pass the nails".

Also note the title "The Hull". That's all you get. When it comes to decks, houses, rigging, etc., you're on your own. Hopefully Pardey will bring out volume 2 on the rest of the boat.

He's a masterful carpenter and his work is glorious and gleaming, fully among the best of yacht-quality work ever done. This is something you need to seriously soak in. This is THE BEST, and not necessarily realistic for the average home boat builder. This book represents a set of skills that you probably don't have, and may find difficulty developing in your lifetime, unless you are really dedicated. Also, there is the time factor. It's one thing to look at a photo of fastening planking on the frame and say "I understand that...I can do that!" and it's quite another to realize how many HUNDREDS of hours are involved in just a few of the aspects of the hull construction. Pardey could work on his yacht full time - he didn't need to do other work to pay the bills. He was also in the prime of his health. Most Americans only have this kind of time if they're retired, and that often means not as strong as we once were. If we're young and strong it means we have to work for a living. So, this particular boat might be best aimed at the youngish man who doesn't have to work very much for his living. Either that or you'll spend about a decade of weekends on this boat.

If you want to get on the water a little quicker than that, consider George Buehler's "Backyard Boat Building", for salty and sea worthy crusising yachts that the average man or woman can build themselves in a year or two, and actually take to the Caribbean, or further. I'm not saying don't aspire to Pardey's level, but remember that you live in the real world. It's better to build a simple boat than to not build a fancy one. It's better to go sailing than it is to spend your free weekends for 2 years screwing down teak decking. But, that consideration aside, there is no better guide to traditional yacht construction than this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars If you own a boat..........1999-12-21

If you own a boat then you understand that B.O.A.T is an acronym for Bring Out Another Thousand (dollars). Anyone who owns a boat, unless that boat is new, and has not yet been used will be forced to deal to boat maintainence issues. This book will help you to do some if this maintainence yourself so you don't have to spend a fortune to keep your boat running.

If you have a powerboat, a rowboat, or a sailboat then I recommend this book. This also makes a great gift for any boat owner.

One thing that I really like about this book is that there are lots of pictures and diagrams to help you understand what they are talking about. When you are doing work on a boat, sometimes one picture can be worth a thousand words.

It is obvious that the people writing this book really know what they are doing. This was not written by amatuers.

So if you have major repairs to deal with, or you just want to understand how your boat was built, this is the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars How to Design a Boat.......2006-08-14

Good, but scanty in detail. Gives you an adequate overview of the subject but lacks sufficient detail to be of much practical use.

4 out of 5 stars How to Design a Boat.......2005-07-05

Excellent step by step technical approach - with a good practical balance to the engineering issues.

Being a complete novice I would like to see a visual of the hull with all features named to ease reference.

I look forward to another read!

5 out of 5 stars I read it again and again.......2005-05-21

I have accumulated a lot of boat books over the years, mainly on building and design. I really love this book. Mr Teale gives you a concise course on how to design a conventional boat. He doesn't try to turn you into a naval engineer in this little book, he just gives you enough info with no guff and not too much jargon.

What this book will let you do is understand the desisions taken by designers, understand what people are saying when they talk about boat technicalities, and if you want to it'll show you how to design a conventional yacht or motor boat.

If I have one complaint I'd have liked a bit more on multihulls, which are my particular interest.

The book is small, and cheap. I'm an engineer and I have struggled with the bulk information in some of the more comprehensive books. This one isn't as detailed but it has the important stuff and I'd say most people could follow it.

Really good!
