5 out of 5 stars awesome book and pictures.......2007-08-07

Dale, this is the best book on the market to help folks with there traveling. I read it from cover to cover not wanting to put it down. I have been riding for 40+ years and you covered every aspect of motorcycle touring that I could think of. Great Job. Jerry Hihn Jefferson City, Missouri

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for ALL motorcyclists.......2007-08-01

This book covers all asspects of Motorcycle enjoyment. I have been riding motorcycles for more than fourty years and have read many books on the subject of motorcycling. This is the BEST and covers the subject better than any that I have ever read. I highly recomend it to all.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2007-07-30

The book does as it's intended to do in that it provides a substantial amount of information on preparing your motorcycle and yourself for touring. I think that books of this nature need to be updated yearly as the large section on electronics is allready outdated.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book I wish I'd had when I started touring........2007-07-29

Imagine that you are in your late 30s, you've never owned a motorcycle in your life, and you want to begin motorcycle touring. Where would you begin to find out? That is the dilemma that I had when I first got into the sport, eleven years and 100,000 miles ago. Mostly, I got information from word of mouth, members of our local BMW club, and blind experimentation.

Someone starting out today, however, would not have as hard a time getting started because of Dale Conyer's wonderful new book, the Essential Guide to Motorcycle Travel, Tips, Technology, Advanced Techniques. What I found was a veritable encyclopedia of information that is just as valuable to this experienced learner as it would have been to my newbie self a decade ago.

The book is organized into sections entitled:
Planning your trip
Preparing yourself
Outfitting your bike
On the road

The section on planning your trip lays out all of the essential questions that must be answered before you leave home. Yes, I've left home with some basics and expected to "wing it" but the result is usually less than satisfactory. Using Dale's checklist and putting some rudimentary planning into a trip is going to pay dividends when you are in a convenience store, asking the Highway Patrolman getting a slurpee if he would stay in the motel across the road. When he answers, "no way," and you end up riding another 30, groggy miles, you will wish you had planned better.

The section on preparation is valuable as well. It covers what to wear as well as what you should have between your ears in the nature of mental preparation.

Something that I'd never seen approached in a systematic way before was "What's all this gear gonna cost?" I must admit, that acquiring gear a piece at a time from vendors at rallies, used from the internet, or at my local BMW dealer was my preferred approach to assembling a crapload of motorcycling gear. I'm not sure that if I had done the budget, I wouldn't have chosen a cheaper hobby, like sailing. Just kidding, anything for boats is expensive.

The largest portion of the book is devoted to farkles, the mechanical modifications that we all make to our machines in search of better tunes, more comfort, more visibility, more MORE. There are chapters on tunes, lights, cockpit electronic countermeasures and position systems, and cameras. Part of the appeal of this book is that there are really useful illustrations showing wiring and set up for electrical connections with relays and fuses.

Finally, the book concludes with the section "On the Road." This section includes a chapter with tips for putting it all together, which gives handy lists detailing what to do at six to twelve months before the trip, two weeks before, the week before, up to the day before. If you have ever had to pull an all nighter working on your bike so you can be ready to meet your buddies at oh-dark-thirty for a six-hundred mile ride, this might spare you that fate.

The last chapter in this section and in the book deals with Contingencies. It is an essential for anyone who decides that they are going cross county on a bike. That is my picture on p. 161. My wife and I had a broken throttle cable in Socorro, NM, over 800 miles from our home in Kansas and a long way from a BMW dealer. We met some good Samaritans that helped us get to a dealer in Albuquerque and back on the road.

This book will help you prepare and execute any motorcycle tour that is more demanding than your local club bike night or poker run. It's well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read for motorcycle touring of any distance.......2007-06-25

An excellent guide for anyone interested in motorycle touring. Whether you are the weekend rider or the long distance traveller preparing to ride across the state or the country you will find valuable tips in this guide. From planning to contingencies, additional equipment for you and your motorcycle, electronics to trailering this book has something for everyone. I have 20 years of motorcycling experience and after reading this book I have updated my riding attire and how I prepare myself and my m/c for riding. This guide is up to date and informative, but doesn't go overboard with too much information on any one subject. This is worthy read for anyone interested in a saddle sore or iron butt ride or those just interested in talking about them after a short ride to the local meeting place. I recommend this book.

Product Description

Contemporary sport bikes accelerate faster, brake harder, and cut through corners deeper than ever before. These technologically advanced motorcycles are exhilarating to ride, but to really get the most out of a motorcycle’s performance capabilities a rider must develop his or her own personal performance. Riders need to take their skills to the next level. Now, in this book written specifically for sport riders, well-known journalist, racer, and riding school instructor Nick Ienatsch provides the tools and techniques to help riders analyze and develop that personal performance. If you’re an experienced rider, Nick will help you hone and perfect your skills, operate controls with even greater finesse, and apply race-proven techniques on the track—as well as on the street. If you’re a beginning rider, Nick will show you how to develop proper skills and safety habits that will add to your motorcycling enjoyment and build your confidence. Whatever your current riding ability, Nick will teach you to safely find the absolute limit of bike and rider.

5 out of 5 stars You need it.....read it!.......2007-10-08

This book should be mandatory for every sportbike rider. It starts off with the basics and gets into the meat of more advanced techniques to become a better rider on the street or racetrack. After mastering Nick's writings, get your hands on Andy Ibbott's "Performance Riding Techniques." Between these two books, you will have the best material on the market for advancing your riding skills to a significantly higher level. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2007-09-28

I have read this book several times and implemented the techniques on 1000 miles of twisties in the Colorado mountains this past August. It made a huge difference in my riding. It's nice to know the proper techniques and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Will make anyone a better rider.......2007-09-27

Being a motocross rider for the last 35 years, I thought I would have no problems when I decided to become a street rider also. Even though I felt comfortable right away on my new road bike, after reading Nick's book it all clicked..! I now ride safer, more in control, and when it comes time to tear up the twisties, I'm having more fun on my bike than I could have imagined..! Thanks Nick, great book.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As Twist of the Wrist 2.......2007-09-13

Very solid book on high performance motorcycle riding techniques. Covers all the major aspects, as well as offers numerous drills that can convert the correct techniques into muscle memory. I rate this book as highly as the iconic Twist of the Wrist 2 by Keith Code. A must read if you ride a sports bike.

5 out of 5 stars The title of the book says it all.......2007-07-26

Excellent book. It leans a little more to the mechanical and physics of the ride than "Total Control" does. Glad I bought it.
As your experience develops, more truths in the book will reveal themselves.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-10-08

In my opinion, the best book on the market for sportbike riders and racetrack techniques. Beautifully done, brilliantly written. Andy has more good information here for the advanced rider than any other book on the shelves. This and Nick Ienatsch's "Sportbike Riding Techniques" should be mandatory reading for anyone wishing to expand their riding skills, especially sportbike riders considering going to trackdays, track schools (such as CLASS, STAR, etc.) or actively roadracing.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative, helpful, & practical........2007-06-08

You don't have to be a regular track day rider, Club, AMA, or Moto GP racer for this book to provide you with practical insights into being a better rider. Even for the street / sport rider, or twisty road commuter, this book is another great tool to add to your riding skills library.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars very repetative, and not what I thought it would be........2007-06-27

Read the book over vacation, the info it gives you is great but a lot of it only works if you actually drive a Formula or Sport Racer Vehicle. Lots of info about tracks and courses, how to get the ideal line in an apex, and how to drive smoothly and fast gain control, then it repeats itself again, so this makes an illusion that there are a lot of secrets even though he is just repeating it using different verbiage. This is a great book for advanced racers that understand the concept and terminology of F1 type races and it helps you prepare for a F1 race too but for an average driver trying to learn the ropes this book might be to hard and doesn't help much with everyday driving since a lot of the techniques is for driving above 150mph and plus F1 has totally different suspension systems and steering systems then regular sport cars so if you try it it might feel weird. You learn the heal toe move which I have been trying to get for a while, very detailed and lots of graphs, data charts, and drawings. I personally had to skip some chapters because I was not interested tracks, officials, and what they do with the flags, and some more stuff because a lot of it does not apply to me as I do not own a formula car or race professionally in such a track they described, but I did read about perfect turning and control plus weight transfer and how to keep that center of gravity which helps me in the real world of driving on the streets. I feel that I am going a lot faster in my car by being able to turn safely yet not slowing my car down to much where it would take longer to accelerate plus I have been able to drive fast yet so smooth that my mom fell asleep the whole time as I drove her. So i was really happy with that info. I am a mechanic and I test race clients vehicles at the track, my average speed is 140mph so you know my point of view

5 out of 5 stars TRACK TIME.......2007-06-11

This book is an absolute must for any novice or even intermediate racer. I race karts often and bought this book recently to enhance my skills.
Within a week of reading this book I have already dropped more than a FULL SECOND off my lap times!!! MUST READ MATERIAL!

5 out of 5 stars Race Car Resource.......2007-04-10

Any gearhead should read this book about racing. Learn what race car drivers do while on the circuit and find out about car modifications.

5 out of 5 stars My review of an excellent book.......2007-02-27

This book is an absolute must read for any gear head. Whether your planning to race professionally, or just moddifing your daily driver. This book will change your entire view on racing, and will affect your daily drivig habbits.

The book also goes over different aspects of your suspension, what each component does, and how altering them will affect the cars handling.

After reading this book I have been more focused on driving smoothly, and being more precise with the controls. Already, I can see the positive effects on my driving style.

Note however, that this book is written for racing, so some information may not apply to daily driven vehicles, e.g. shifting without the clutch

4 out of 5 stars A great primer on racing........2007-01-26

This book is an excellent introduction to what race car drivers do, why they do it, and how they do it. Before I read this book, all I knew about car racing was "race cars go around a track real fast". Now I know about the apex, under/oversteer, scrubbing off speed, trail braking, and finding the line. There's also penty of info on suspension tuning if I ever feel like spending the bucks to have it done.

I am so happy I read this book prior to my first autocross event in my 911. I able to take the concepts explained in the book and immediately apply them to the course I was racing. And I beat my big-mouth buddy by 1/10th of a second. Sweeeeeeeeeet.

5 out of 5 stars Solo Racing, Best Information available to the new commer.......2007-08-11

This is the only publication available that gives a comprehensive overview into the sport, and somewhat eases the frustration of what to expect during the course of a day's event that goes beyond just racing. My driving skills are improving & I'm even thinking of moving up to road racing in Club Racing, or Spec Racing.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic, except I wish..........2007-06-21

Great book, I just wish they would have had a diagram of a full course and how to run it. They showed one turn, with a late apex. made sense! They showed linking turns with early apex, into late apex. Made sense! But then when I got to the course for the first time, and it was like 75 linking turns? YIKES!

Still, this book taught me A LOT...

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-31

Awesome book! Tons of great knowledge and advice for beginners to experts.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to read, poor production quality.......2006-01-11

There are a lot better books on driving then "Secrets of Solo Racing". Frankly if you have much autocross experience at all I wouldn't bother with this one. If you're just starting out, you may get something out it if, but not much.

Try the Speed Secrets books first.

Also I found the book to be very difficult to read, for many reasons:

- The author has a very choppy writing style, and I found myself having to re-read many passages to properly understand the meaning.

- Production quality / design is horrible. Many of the diagrams are worthless, with arrows pointing at the wrong things. Diagrams should be used to clarify words, not make it more confusing. The quality of the diagrams and are are poor--most are low resolution, and were drawn by an amatuer in Microsoft Paint

- I found the author skipped around a bit, and the book lacked a sense of flow

- Typeface is very difficult to read. You wouldn't think it would be that important, but I realize now one of the reasons I really dislike this book: the choice of typeface. I'm not sure what font they used, but it is a very slow and ungraceful. You wouldn't think something like that would matter until you read a book with a poor typeface.

5 out of 5 stars The Benchmark.......2005-11-02

This book was the first I ever read on racing technique. This book is so good, that every time I read any other instructional books on racing my expectations are far higher than they can deliver. I read this book as a beginner, and I think that is who will benefit most from reading it, though all levels will learn from it. It lays out all the relevant information in simple language (once you pick up the necessary driving vernacular) and includes simple but very effective diagrams to help explain points. Far better than much more expensive books (and I've bought a lot of them) with fancier photographs and pro racer forwards and such.

The author of The Warren Buffett Way gets behind the steering wheel of professional stock car racing--NASCAR, to be exact--making a few gushing laps around the track of America's largest and fastest-growing spectator sport. Although filled with plenty of local color, The NASCAR Way primarily focuses on the phenomenal financial success of a sport that began in the tiny, dirt-road hamlets of Dixie. Originally a way for moonshine runners to compete against each other by the light of day in informal--and legal--settings, stock car racing was organized by "Big Bill" France in the late 1940s under the aegis of NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) but soon moved to the larger, asphalt tracks of today. A half-century after NASCAR's inception, the sport boasts lucrative corporate sponsorship, growing cable TV exposure, and fan loyalty to rival--if not surpass--that of every other professional sports organization. While the bottom line ultimately turns Hagstrom's crank more than the personality of the sport itself, the author still has fun with his subject: "Stock car drivers do things in cars that would make the rest of us faint. Try to imagine driving 100 miles an hour, then 120, then 160. Imagine keeping up that pace for three and a half hours.... Now imagine forty-one other cars around you, all doing the same thing, just inches away from you, scraping against the side of your car and nudging your bumper as they try to pass you. And you can never slack off."

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into what drives the sport.......2000-08-28

Before this book, my opinion of the sport ranked up there with my opinion of most politicians. However, a recent slight interest prompted me to buy it. I read it quickly and truly enjoyed it. Not only does it offer great insight into what drives the sport, but it gives a new fan (or someone with slight curiousity) an incredible appreciation of the sport, its athletes, the fans, and the people behind the scenes. After this book, I am a NASCAR fan.

4 out of 5 stars An Inside View of NASCAR.......2000-03-11

I'm not a racing fan, but I am a person who enjoys a good book with a great story. In The NASCAR Way, Robert Hagstrom takes the reader into every facet of the sports organization that is NASCAR. If you have an appreciation for the sport, this will be a great book for you, if not, you like me may gain an appreciation of both the sport and the NASCAR way of doing things. How this empire rose from a few bootleggers engaging in afternoon challenges to a multi-billion dollar industry is fascinating. Perhaps the most fascinating of all is the way this business works together at every level, from upper management, to track personnel, to racing teams and corporate sponsors, to the huge retail business, to loyal fans that fuel the entire machine with their support.

I highly recommend The NASCAR Way, I found it to be both enjoyable and a real learning experience.

The book was very informative on the financial and business demands of creating this great sport. It points out the France's dedication and perserverance to a business and how it became successful. After reading the book you can see why the sport has become a boardroom discussion with a lot of Fortune 500 firms as well as the Little Guys! I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for racing fans.......1999-10-13

The NASCAR Way is the most informative book I've found on NASCAR racing as an industry. The insight that Hagstrom provides the reader on the moral values that started all, to the marketing saavy that continues to drive the business is invaluable not only to the NASCAR fan wanting to know more, but to anyone in any business looking for a model to grow their company by. The reader that is not a NASCAR fan will be hooked before finishing the book, and the casual fan will become an expert on what goes on in the behind-the-scenes world of racing. A must for every entrepreneur and NASCAR fan alike.

Book Description

In his prophetic foreword to "The Technique of Motor Racing," Fangio anticipates the importance Piero Taruffi's book would have for a generation of new drivers. Trained as both a racing driver and an industrial engineer, Taruffi provides a unique perspective on the art and science of motor racing. He drove for the work teams of Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, and others, in a career that spanned over 25 years and was crowned by his victory in the 1957 Mille Miglia. First published in 1959, "The Technique of Motor Racing" has become the standard by which other driving texts are measured.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC!.......2007-04-11

A fact filled book on the basics from one of the greats. A good read even if you aren't planning on going racing.

5 out of 5 stars The technique of Motor Racing.......2007-02-17

The basics are here, even though the book is some 45 years old. A good place to start from.

5 out of 5 stars Niki Lauda said he read this book........2006-02-21

The classic corner lines and driving technique discussed. I bought this book based on Niki Lauda's (F1 World Champion 1975, 1997) recommendation of it in one of his books.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent book about cornering!.......2004-11-28

This book, first published in 1959, is mostly devoted to cornering, and this is the best publication about turns on flat surfaces with high adhesion, used in sport racing, and this information is still valid.

It has a pretty little chapter on physical training of a driver, with the schemes gymnastic exercises recommended for a motorist.

The details of driving position and handling of a steering wheel are mentioned, but not covered well enough.

Nevertheless, the cornering is explained fairly well, in 69 pages full of formulas, schemes and illustrations.

If you need a deeper text-book about fast and safe cornering, which is not only applicable to sport but also to driving on public road, and which covers slippery surfaces like ice, snow and dirt, I would have recommended a published work by Professor Tsygankov.

The Technique of Motor Racing
by Piero Taruffi

Aloha,
Thirty years ago I was a driver for the "Jim Russell International Racing Driving School" out at Willow Springs, CA USA. One of the greatest times in my life. Jim Russell (JRS) at that time had schools simultaneously on five continents. We taught in so many languages that we did not have a textbook of our own. JRS was busy training movie stars and World Champions for Formula One Race Car Driving. JRS put students in signal seaters from day one! We use to order Taruffi's by the case. It had been "The Book!" for over ten years and was very hard to find. I think Harry Morrow would get them for us from England. They would sell out every time. We could not keep them on the shelf.

I use the principles I learned every time I take to the road. I believe it has helped make me a safer and definitely faster better Motor Vehicle Driver. Probably contributed to my long life, considering I am in the habit of winning on or off the track.

For decades I did not see Taruffi at all. Sometimes I would pick them up in old bookstores. I am glad for the sake of all future drivers that someone has had the wisdom to keep Taruffi in publication. Just the fact that it is around after all these years should tell you something.

Even today, you will seldom see them sold used. You will never see them sold cheap. Many driving books are about the author. Some are about street driving. Taruffi is pure Racing!! How you can drive a car faster. The essence of driving. I do not see how things could have changed enough to invalidate anything Taruffi has had to say. Decide for yourself, you can always return it.

If you have read every book on Motor Racing ever published. You will find The Technique of Motor Racing not only has a lot to offer you. It may just be the most compact bit of Racing Knowledge you have ever found in one place.

Pass Um`

4 out of 5 stars Speed Secrets II: More Professional race driving techniques.......2007-08-23

The first few chapters didn't tell you much in the way of coaching you to be better. I think 1/4 into the book, the information is very helpful in isolating and working the different components within a practice session towards driving faster (i.e. work on the entry speed, work on the driving line, work on traction sensing, etc...) I gave it 4 stars, because the book could have deleted the first few chapters.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Step in Racing Learning.......2006-06-28

In the second book of the Speed Secret Series, it goes in racing learning more in depth than the first book, it starts with preparing the racer to be a Complete Race Driver, it shows what racers should have, such as Racing Skills, Physical Skills, Career Skills, Marketing Skills, Mental Skills and Testing Skills.
Also it talks in depth about car preparing and learning new driving techniques and tricks.

All of Speed Secrets Books are well written and easy to be understood by new racers.

I recommend reading the first Speed Secrets Book, then practice the techniques in test days and real races, after the driver understand the book well, he should get the second book to learn more about racing gradually.

5 out of 5 stars Speed Secrets 2: More Professional Race Driving Techniques.......2006-02-20

Another great book in the series. Brings up things one wouldn't necessarily have attended to in the beginning. Good for general driving, too.

5 out of 5 stars The companion book to book 1........2005-05-16

If you are looking for books on racing driving techniques then at least start with books by Ross Bentley.I bought this book and book 1 and they are books that go together.

This book covers more detail and starts where book 1 left off.Things like computer racing/simulations games are good too.

I highly recommend this book and book 1 for anyone interested in racing.

4 out of 5 stars Needs to be combined with the others he's written.......2004-10-30

There's a lot of good info in this book, lots of stuff to provoke thought, and it is presented in a very simple and easy to understand format that communicates the points well - like a military training manual (but with a little more humour)

Unfortunately, it tends to rehash subjects discussed in Speed Secrets and Inner Speed Secrets, which means that the amount of new material (for owners of the other two) is roughly half of what is already a pretty thin book.

Between the three books, there is one outstanding book in there. If Mr Bentley writes another installment (as he threatens to do in this book) I hope he compliles all his books into one big one, adds a couple of new chapters to cover whatever new material he wants to add, and then edits it into a coherent whole.

    Book Description

Mikael Jansson photographs Formula 1: cars, drivers, mechanics, race tracks, pit lanes and spectators. Behind the colorful surface, the glistening bodywork, the noisy engines and the smell of burning rubber lies a fundamental concern with power, both on the track and on the page. Jansson, who was once Richard Avedon's assistant, has been one of the most respected photographers in the fashion world for some 20 years, and his work has been included in museum and gallery shows around the world, as well as in Italian, American, French, British and Japanese Vogue, among many other magazines. Every photo in Speed of Life--from passing cars to the reflections on drivers' visors, from the dust of the opening lap to the rubber particles flying from deteriorating tires at the end of the race--brims with movement and action.
