Since his debut in 1951 as The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield has been synonymous with "cynical adolescent." Holden narrates the story of a couple of days in his sixteen-year-old life, just after he's been expelled from prep school, in a slang that sounds edgy even today and keeps this novel on banned book lists. It begins,

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them."

His constant wry observations about what he encounters, from teachers to phonies (the two of course are not mutually exclusive) capture the essence of the eternal teenage experience of alienation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books of all time.......2007-10-13

In order to love this book, you have to really get the words he says and understand that he is just a lost teenage soul like the rest of us. The book was by no means a lame one, I loved every part of it. It was easy to read, there were many interesting parts to it that gave the book it's extra taste. I highly suggest that anyone who is a teenager currently or whoever struggled in their teenage years, to read this book because you will definitely love it, but maybe not depending on your taste.

4 out of 5 stars A Coward's Narrative..........2007-10-08

For years, friends and family noted the classic, The Catcher in the Rye, as a "must read." I was pleasantly surprised with Salinger's ahead-of-the-times writing of Holden Caufield and his experiences/thoughts with sex, drinking, and his general disenchantment with the world, as he is expelled from prep school. Holden narrates as he bounces around for a few days before heading home to tell his parents.

On some level, readers will relate their own lives to that of Holden's. How could you not? He's depressed, rebellious, and negative. He's a coward, a braggart, a phony, and a wannabe. We've all been like him at times. But that is his whole character and you rarely see another side... only his love for his sibling showed a side of Holden that could be defined as positive.

There is no real payoff or conclusion in the end. You'll find the value of this writing after finishing it, putting it back on the shelf, and thinking about it for a few days. Keep digging, it's there.

Have fun,

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-10-01

Unfortunately this book was not on my reading list for High School. It is a shame because I would have enjoyed it then, just as I enjoyed it now. Anybody can relate to some aspect of this novel. Whether it be growing up, the akward situations that we find ourselves in struggling through adolecence and our teenage years. Bottom line, is great book and everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars Bradbury is alive and well.......2007-09-28

This novel is more alive today than ever. Books are not being burned, but no one reads. The effect is the same. The few lucky ones have their favorite books in their heads.

5 out of 5 stars A different perspective.......2007-09-24

Mid-aged now, I had a few spotty memories of this book from my high school years and in my mind's eye it seemed forgettable, but later in life I bought the book and read it again, partly because I wanted to see if I could figure out why John Lennon's murderer was carrying the book when he was arrested. Was there a clue in the story that inspired the twisted killer to attack Lennon? Anyhow, if so, then Chapman was not caught and saved by the Catcher, but instead went entirely off the cliff. And if Chapman envisioned himself as the Catcher, he was wrong. The Catcher in the Rye is a saver not a destroyer.
Although I rate this book five stars it is by far not my favorite, but I would still recommend it to anyone just because it is so popular. I did find it interesting and in my youth I spent a lot of time in New York City and had been to some of the places referenced in the story. When I was a kid growing up on a dairy farm, my cousins and friends and I used to play hide and seek in the cornfields, (Catcher in the Corn) way before we ever heard of Catcher in the Rye. So While reading this book I felt those kind of connections, as in, I felt like I was there in the story at times. But back when I first saw the title Catcher in the Rye, I imagined, (before reading), that it must have been about something in life to watch out for, something that may catch you if you let your guard down, something that might be out to get you. Maybe that's the connection Chapman made. Maybe Chapman didn't actually read the book before he killed. I just hope they keep the guy locked up.
And I, for one, hope they finally get finicky J.D.'s novel made into a movie. By the way, I think it is very healthy to turn off the TV and read books in quiet solitude. I find the best time is before I fall off to sleep, reading can also help to cultivate dreams.
note: I still sorely miss John Lennon.

1 out of 5 stars Sincere, but used by others to spread mis-information.......2006-08-06

Michael is an intellegent and sincere person, however because of his mental off-balance was apparently used by others to spread seeds of mis-information. Why? Who Knows.

1 out of 5 stars If you are serious about Aliens and UFO's, don't bother.......2002-03-05

I found this book to be self serving drivel. I threw it down in disgust after plowing through 140 pages waiting to obtain some useful insight. Instead, what I got was a way too fanciful style and content that is little more than blatent exhibitionism about how clever and wonderful is Dr. Wolf and his late family.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a waste of money!.......2001-05-15

First, I will start by saying I am not the toughest critic. But this book was bad. It was very difficult to read and make sense of. Michael Wolf seems to be mentally delusional with no scientific basis whatsoever. I found it difficult to believe he was even a scientist of any kind. They say his background has never checked out and I do not find that surprising at all. I felt like this was a first person story written by a 10 year old in fantasylike, doom/gloom, paranoid world. Basically sounding schizophrenic almost. Save your money and buy "The Day After Roswell," now that book will provide more factual information you are probably looking for. Good Luck.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Effort.......2000-05-27

Having read a number of the glowing reviews, I began the book eagerly but bogged down in the 1st 30 pages with Rabbi Stone and all and was not sure it was worth it. I might have quit except that I had a dream in which Michael Wolf's son came to me and asked just what I was having trouble with in the book, expressing concern. I remember little more from the dream but it got my attention, and I determined to keep going. The beginning was difficult with so much stream of consciousness and jumping around in time. I also had difficulty following the physics lectures, and sorting out if this was just too far over my head, or it wasn't meant to be fully understood. My educational background is in biology, so when the rainforests came up, I could tell the writing was, in fact, just plain confusing, and could benefit from some additional editing, if clarity is a goal.

All said, the gems of information and insight into a multi-dimensional existence, and into government involvement were worth the effort. It is hard to believe this could be pure fiction, because it is so personal. And it is written by someone who seems to have firsthand experience of non-linear time, and of a greater existence beyond an earthly lifetime.

Here are some passages that struck me:

"This Trilogy is written only because I firmly believe that people have rights: They deserve to know! I do not seek forgiveness. I swear eternal hostility upon those who would rule the minds of men. In a so-called "free" society, the right to know must exist. If a man sees, hears, and feels, he cannot be told he did not see, he did not hear, he did not feel, for this is the 'Tyranny over the mind of man.' This tyranny must end...now."

"I am overwhelmed with the knowledge that the majority of global citizens are deliberately kept ignorant of what is happening, what has been happening since the beginning of human history."

Amen. Perhaps his story will help us toward hearings on government secrecy, with amnesty for government employees willing to talk.

I am grateful for the courage and effort it took to get this extraordinary book out. I hope Michael Wolf will stay with us a while longer, not meeting some untimely death, and that he will be able to complete the sequel his son hoped he would write. I also recommend John Mack's book, Passport to the Cosmos, a study of alien encounters which blew holes in my scientific materialist worldview and helped anchor the "Bigger Picture".

5 out of 5 stars Opinion of a student.......1999-12-13

Dr. Wolf's book is an incredible mix of science, poetry, autobiography. He's an infinite source of information about UFO cover-up, also a scientist.

This series of book is worth the read. Great action and it is well written. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot, Hot!.......2007-09-17

I'm a big fan of this series and this book is just another jewel in the Bullet Catchers crown. Ms. St. Claire has a real talent for writing HOT heroes and heroines you can sympathize with.

Now all I need to know is where to hire these Bullet Catchers...*wink*

Can't wait for the next one, First You Run - I'm going to pre-order now!

5 out of 5 stars Intriguing and Suspenseful.......2007-08-28

This is the first Bullet Catcher paperback I've read and it intrigued me from the start. The notion of getting kidnapped for a thrill seemed unnatural to me, so I had to find out more. Then, Sage really gets into the act just to investigate what really happened to her roommate who supposedly committed suicide. As surprising as this was, the book only gets better with lots of suspense, a few steamy sex scenes, and some cooking thrown in for good measure. I don't think I'll ever look at a cannoli the same again. Ha-ha. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2007-07-07

Roxanne St Claire once again proves she can work within a structure and create something new and different every time. She creates characters and gets you right into their heads. There's no way a reader can confuse any of her Bullet Catchers with another. I can't wait to meet them all.

5 out of 5 stars Roxanne St. Claire Does It Again!!.......2007-07-04

I wanted to read something for a few minutes before bed, but this was the wrong choice!! Once I started TAKE ME TONIGHT, I could not put it down!! I was up until 1 am--4 hours past my usual bedtime, but I couldn't help it. The characters came alive for me from page one. I could totally relate to Sage, who is absolutely tenacious when it comes to getting at the truth. And Johnny--OMG! Who can't love a guy like that? A smart, sensitive hunk--and he cooks! During the suspense scenes (and there are a few), my heart pounded as I frantically read on. A totally good read and one I would recommend to anyone.

While I'm here, I'd like to remark on a comment left by another reviewer about Sage performing the "sexual service" in her effort to get information from Johnny. I can totally understand where she's coming from and under many circumstances, I would agree. But as I read on, that became much less of an issue for me. I could see that Sage's loyalty was so intense that she would do anything to discover the truth about her friend's murder.

Read it. You won't regret it!!!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2007-07-01

The first thing readers should realize is that even though this book is second in the Bullet Catcher series, it is also a stand alone novel. Well written romantic suspense. The only reason it didn't get five stars from me was that there were not enough red herrings in the plot, making the reveal predictable in my opinion. Romance was plentiful though for readers looking for a little more sex in their novels than the typical Romantic suspense.

Max Roper is given a difficult assignment; be the bodyguard for his ex-fiance. He hasn't seen her since she ran away claiming he killed her father and she would never forgive him. Yet, she wasted no time in finding herself a new extemely wealthy husband, who just happened to have died three months earlier leaving her a sizeable fortune and a great deal of power. It's Max's job not only to protect her from whomever is trying to threaten her, but to find out if she killed her husband. The only problem is that he isn't sure if he can get her to confide in him without getting too close in the process and opening up a world of emotions locked to the past. Someone wants her out of the way. Will Max be able to protect her, or will she suffer the same fate as her father?

Is it worth buying?

Yes. Either as part of the series or just for someone wanting to read a good contemporary romance novel. Suspense is carefully strung out to pull the reader along. Just don't expect a surprise ending. Hope that helps a little with the decision.

5 out of 5 stars Book #2 in the Bullet Catcher's.......2007-06-27

Wonderful read! Fast paced, starts right off and goes. Well written and edited. Sizzling romance. Gosh, the bigger and meaner they are, the bigger they fall. Glad these two got their lives back on tract. What a story. If you like bodyguard tough guys and girls that are not totally helpless, with action, thriller-type, mystery, drama and steamy scenes, you'll enjoy this easy to read book.

4 out of 5 stars This bullet is gold!.......2007-03-09

When her father is killed in a DEA bust gone bad, a guilt ridden Cori blames her lover, DEA agent Max Roper and dumps him. Several years later, the two are reunited when Cori hires an elite bodyguard group to provide protection while she investigates the possible murder of her much older wealthy husband. No one is more surprised than Cori when she discovers that Max is the man who is sworn to protect her. But who will protect Cori's heart from the only man she's ever really loved, who's assigned to both protect her and determine if she had a role in her husband's murder?

Full of sizzling love scenes and great bantering between the two protagonists, St. Claire's second entry in the Bullet Catcher series has equal parts romance, intrigue, and sensuality to sustain the reader's attention and waiting impatiently for the next intallment in the series. But I could have done without the epilogue, which added nothing at all to the story (in fact, I found it detracted). Too many authors are using them to do nothing but plug their next book.

5 out of 5 stars Kept Me Reading!.......2006-09-25

I'm not typically a romantic suspense fan, but this book wowed me! The characters are so easy to fall in love with, and the writing makes each scene easy to picture.

I look forward to the next installment of the Bullet Catchers series!

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Sexy thrill ride.......2006-09-22

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This was a terrific story with strong characters, mystery, romance, and action........2007-10-18

I'm always excited when I find a new author to add to my home library. Roxanne St. Claire can really tell a story. Her descriptions of the locations in the tale are vivid without being too wordy. Her characters are well developed and realistic. There is plenty of mystery and lots of fast- paced scenes to keep you turning the pages.

Alex has been assigned the duty of guarding a well- known news reporter. As a body guard among an elite team known as the 'Bullet Catchers', he takes his job seriously. When he arrives to take on his assigned task, he is surprised to find that his client has been replaced by her twin sister.

Jazz and her twin, Jess, are as different as night and day. While Jess is busy building her career as a famous anchorwoman, Jazz prefers risking her life as a private investigator. When Jess wants to take a week off at the news station to research a ground- breaking story, Jazz agrees to pretend she is her sister on the evening news. When Jazz arrives at her sister's apartment she is shocked to learn that she has a new body guard. The last thing Jazz wants or needs is a man following her around.

Over the following days, Alex and Jazz learn that Jess is in trouble. Until she is found, Alex has been reassigned to guarding Jazz in her sister's place. Jazz wants to follow every dangerous lead to her sister's whereabouts. Alex is determined to keep her from running straight into a trap. They make a pact to work together until Jess is saved. Their biggest challenge becomes fighting their attraction for one another so they can concentrate on saving Jess.

This book is a real page- turner. The only thing that made it a bit less enjoyable for me was the fact that Jazz's character was quite cold. She is jaded from a past relationship and will not bend when Alex tries to keep her safe. He compromises again and again in their search for Jess, but she insists upon doing everything her way... even to the point of taking unreasonable risks. She constantly disappears without warning, leaving Alex to frantically search for her. When their relationship progresses to "the next level", Jazz tells him that she only wants him for sex. It got to a point where I really could not like Jazz. I was wishing Alex had a woman with a bit more heart. Still, the story is definitely worth all 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Book #1 of Bullet Catcher Series.......2007-06-25

I enjoyed this "thriller type romance." It starts right off and goes. Lots of twists, suspense, not gory and gross stuff either. Bodyguard type romance with a twist. Well written and easy to read and follow without too much concentration. Nice read! Some steam, but not too much. I'm reading book 2 now.

4 out of 5 stars Sensuality and red herrings galore.......2007-05-15

Miami reporter Jessica Adams is about to embark on the big time - a network anchor job in New York. But she stumbles upon a story and calls upon her twin sister Jasmine to take her place for a week while she gets the scoop of a lifetime. Jasmine is a former reporter turned tough as nails PI from California. Taking Jessica's place won't be so easy - especially since her boss hired a sexy hunk of a bodyguard to watch over "Jessica" after she received some menacing fan mail. Bullet catcher Alex Romero is not thrilled to be stuck babysitting, but his libido got in the way of his last assignment, so he is doing penance. He is able to tell right off that he has the wrong twin... where could Jessica be?

But things are not adding up, and when Jessica fails to call Jazz, Alex reluctantly agrees to help investigate, even though doing so could put his job at risk. He does not count on an intense attraction to Jazz, and soon the two are acting on the attraction, while trying to figure out who to trust.

St. Claire's first in the "Bullet Catcher" series (once again, I read them out of order) is a sensuous tale filled with snappy dialogue, red herrings, lots of suspects, and written with frenetic pacing, it keeps the reader glued. Followed by "Thrill me to Death" and "Take Me Tonight." If the first two books are any indication of the quality of the series, this reader will keep tuning in for more.

4 out of 5 stars First in the Bullet Catcher series.......2006-10-02

Alex Romero is given one assignment- to keep Jessica Adams safe, and stay out of her bed. What Alex didn't expect was her twin sister to be the one pretending to be Jessica. Jazz Adams is nothing like her sister the newscaster. She has spunk, and an overly eager sense of determination to find her missing sister, but who can she trust? Before Jessica disappeared, she asked Jazz to pretend to be her and to tell no one who she was. With only Alex on her side, the two must unravel the clues to find Jessica before it is too late.

As my first Roxanne St. Claire novel, it was a fairly decent read. The suspense held throughout the story line. I noticed how so many people mentioned the many twists and turns, I however, did not think they were as cleverly done. Maybe it is just that I read at least a book a day if not two with a good majority being mysteries, but it was a bit predictable to me. Maybe that's because there just weren't enough red herrings to really make the twist a shocker. Even with the predictability on my part though, it was a good romantic suspense. I look forward to reading the next in the bullet catcher series.

Is it worth buying?
Yes, I do feel most people will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A can't put it down read.......2006-05-02

I read this while at a conference in Arizona--hooked from the start. I ended up waterlogged from a too-long soak in the tub, skipped dinner, and sat in the back of the room pretending to pay attention to the seminars. Twins are normally a hard sell for me (since I have a set of my own) but this one didn't rely on the usual cliches.

Can't wait for the next on. Roxanne's done it again.

In a joyous, often hilarious ode to the Birkenstock-scuffling, tackle box-toting mobile midwives who flourished in the 1980s, Peggy Vincent chronicles her abundant life as a professional Baby Catcher. The wild ride begins during her nurse training years in the 1960s, when laboring women were expected to lie down, shut up, and submit to whatever drugs and procedures the doctor ordered. A rebellious patient who chants and dances through her contractions--and the hell that ensues when seasoned hospital staffers intrude--lights a permanent fire under Vincent. Her resolve to serve each laboring woman with compassion and respect carries her from obstetrics nurse to head of an alternative birth center within Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California, and eventually into her own private practice as a licensed midwife. Like the most courageous home births, this collection of delivery experiences refuses anesthesia: plenty of bellowing, sweating, bleeding, and pushing accompany nearly all of the more than 40 tales. Tough confrontations with stubborn physicians, panicky labor partners, and one particularly nasty calico cat are dabbed with as many keen insights as Vincent's quieter, more heart-rending newborn encounters. Baby Catcher is an inspirational literary gift suitable for expectant mothers, fellow baby catchers, and anyone who loves reading about nature's greatest magical feat. --Liane Thomas

Book Description

Each time she knelt to "catch" another wriggling baby -- nearly three thousand times during her remarkable career -- California midwife Peggy Vincent paid homage to the moment when pain bows to joy and the world makes way for one more. With every birth, she encounters another woman-turned-goddess: Catherine rides out her labor in a car careening down a mountain road. Sofia spends hers trying to keep her hyper doctor-father from burning down the house. Susannah gives birth so quietly that neither husband nor midwife notice until there's a baby in the room.

More than a collection of birth stories, however, Baby Catcher is a provocative account of the difficulties that midwives face in the United States. With vivid portraits of courage, perseverance, and love, this is an impassioned call to rethink technological hospital births in favor of more individualized and profound experiences in which mothers and fathers take center stage in the timeless drama of birth.

"She never tired of the miracle. Each time she knelt to "catch" another baby, beloved California mid-wife Peggy Vincent paid homage to the moment when pain bows to joy, one person becomes two, woman turns to goddess, and the world moves aside to make room for one more soul. Trained as a nurse at Duke University in the early 1960s, Vincent begins working in the delivery room of a local hospital in the San Francisco Bay area. Even after establishing an alternative birth center at the hospital, however, she is still frustrated with her lack of autonomy. Too often she witnesses births changing from normal to high risk because of routine obstetrical interventions. Vincent then devotes herself to creating unique birth experiences for her clients and their families. She becomes a licensed midwife, opens her own practice, and delivers nearly three thousand babies during her remarkable career. With every birth comes an unforgettable story. Each time Vincent ""catches"" a wet and wriggling baby, she encounters another memorable woman busy negotiating her unique path through the labyrinth of childbirth. Meet Catherine as she rides out her labor in a car careening down a mountain road, her husband clueless at the wheel. Megan delivers on a leaky sailboat during the storm of the decade. Susannah gives birth so quietly and effortlessly, neither husband nor midwife notice much of anything until they see a baby lying on the bed, and Sofia spends her labor trying to keep her hyper doctor-father from burning down the house. More than just a collection of birth stories, Baby Catcher is a provocative, moving, and highly personal account of the ongoing difficulties midwives face in the United States. With vivid portraits of courage, perseverance, and love, this is a passionate call to rethink today's technological hospital births in favor of a more individualized and profound experience in which mothers and fathers take the stage in the timeless drama of birth and renewal.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book; couldn't put it down.......2007-08-27

I only finished this book an hour ago, after 2 solid days of nonstop reading. I've been sick, and as I neared the end of the book, I anxiously hoped I'd get well within the next few minutes because this page-turner was the only thing helping me through this horrible flu!!!

The birth stories are beautifully written; I cried when reading most of them :) There wasn't a boring moment throughout the entire book, and Peggy Vincent's own story of the legal troubles facing midwives was artfully woven in.

The book was not negative towards the medical establishment- Ms. Vincent gave examples of wonderful, informed physicians who advocated for and worked with midwives beautifully. She merely shows that there is another way to give birth, with a midwife and/or outside of a hospital, and that this experience can be one of the most awesome and fulfilling of a lifetime!

There are stories of typical as well as atypical births (where transport is required or a baby doesn't do so well), and Ms. Vincent doesn't mince words about pain, blood, mucus and complications... However, the overall feeling I had when I finished the book was one of excitement- I can't wait to have a baby of my own. What more can I say about a book that is so wonderfully written and inspiring that it makes women excited at the prospect of childbirth??

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-08-17

This book is hilarious and touching and at times even a little sad. Her stories are shocking and amazing. Well written. You won't be able to put this book down!

3 out of 5 stars I'm glad this book is out there.......2007-08-09

Bit corny, especially the first chapter but I've been waiting for a personal book written by a midwife. Easy to read and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely riveting!.......2007-04-16

I read this book 4 years after I had my 8th and last child. It captured my absolute attention. Though, I must say this topic is a soapbox of mine. I am a 52 year old retired L&D nurse. I felt I was so aggravated by the system of American childbirth the whole time. I am very pro-midwife. It is refreshing to read of women who get wonderful care. I was frustrated as I finished the book to think that in 1986 I lived 15 mins. from Peggy Vincent and didn't know it. My husband was a Naval Officer based in Oakland. I went to a Military Hospital there because I didn't know of midwives then. I had my babies without drugs or epidurals but my care was lacking as I constantly fought the system to get what I wanted. I imagined how my birth could have been if I had known and had her come to my house. Oh well, I love you Peggy.
I now have people who want this care to read this book. One of my daughters has now had a baby using a midwife. She is due in June with her second and is paying out of pocket to see a midwife. She has re-read this book as has her husband to prepare!

5 out of 5 stars Good read........2007-02-18

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I am a labor/delivery nurse (with a little over 1 year experience in the field). I was actually looking for a book on the history of childbirth, and stumbled on this book. I thought it would be an interesting read. Although it was a well-narrarated book, it also gave me some good ideas for how to help laboring women. Although, I am a very strong advocate for giving birth in the hospital for the safety of the mother and baby, the book definitely made me a little more sympathetic toward home births.

When a senator's daughter is murdered at a religious revival in Washington, FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell, a criminal profiler, and R.J. Tully, her partner, suspect that it's the work of a serial killer. They soon discover that the girl's murder is connected to the suicides of five young men during a Waco-like standoff in a rural Massachusetts cabin--even if they're not sure how. But then Maggie learns that the minister who seems to have turned her alcoholic mother's life around and Revered Joseph Everett, the charismatic sect leader whose followers died in the standoff, are the same person, and he may have drawn her into his deadly web to get at Maggie herself. Is the serial killer one of Everett's acolytes--and will Tully's daughter and Maggie be his next victims? Kava's third thriller (after Split Second and A Perfect Evil) showcases her gifts of pacing, plotting, and characterization; Maggie O'Dell is a smart, likable protagonist. She and Tully deserve a return engagement. --Jane Adams

Book Description

In a secluded cabin in rural Massachusetts, six young men stage a deadly standoff with FBI and ATF agents. When dust from the flying bullets finally settles, three agents are wounded, one fatally, and five suspects are dead.

In a wooded area near the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., the body of a senator's daughter is discovered. Dead by strangulation, the young woman is left artfully posed, her clothes folded neatly beside her.

For FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell, there is nothing routine about being called in to work these two cases. As an expert criminal profiler, Maggie provides psychological insight on cases that involve suspected serial killers. She can't understand, then, why her boss, Assistant Director Cunningham, has assigned her to these two seemingly unrelated crimes.

But as Maggie and her partner, Special Agent R.J. Tully, delve deeper into the two cases, they learn that there is a connection between the crimes: Reverend Joseph Everett. The charismatic leader of a high-profile religious sect, Everett has cultivated a devoted following that is growing in numbers daily. The young men holed up in the cabin were members of Everett's church, and the murder of the young woman took place following a religious rally Everett held in the capital.

The key to unraveling the significance of these two crimes is Everett himself. But he is untouchable, living on a heavily guarded compound the police are unable to penetrate. Maggie realizes, however, that she may have found a way to get to Everett: by using her own mother, a member of his church.

Is Everett a psychotic madman who uses his position of power to perform heinous crimes? Or is he merely a scapegoat for a killer more cunning, more disciplined than he? Maggie realizes too late that there is more going on here than the FBI ever imagined . . . and her own mother may be about to pay the price.

1 out of 5 stars What a bad book.......2006-03-05

I have never taken the time to post a bad review about a book and I do read quite a bit. That said, I don't recall EVER having read a book that was as simple and lacking of cliffhanging than this book. I would suggest reading this book if YOU are considering writing a book because the only value in reading this book comes from the realization that, apparently, anything can sell in today's world.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Series.......2005-12-23

I really enjoyed reading the O'Dell series by Alex Kava. I can't wait until A Necessary Evil comes out. This is a great book, all of them are great reads. If you do read them make sure you read them in order: A Perfect Evil, Split Second, Soul Catcher, At The Stroke of Madness, and coming in February 2006 A Necessary Evil. These are page turning books that you just can't get tired of reading. They were so good, I read all four within a month!

3 out of 5 stars This is a Sleeper until the Last!.......2005-12-15

SOUL CATCHER continues the saga of FBI Special Agent Maggie O'Dell. This time she and her partner, R.J. Tully are assigned a case where a serial killer's latest victim is a senator's daughter. The daughter just happened to be at a religious gathering in Washington D.C. so the investigation has to tread lightly when the cult closes ranks. When a few bits of evidence don't add up, so begins the journey of O'Dell and Tully as they blunder through more killings.

Alex Kava had the makings of a great mystery but it was clouded with glimpses into the personal lives of Maggie O'Dell and her relationship with her mother. Also tossed in is the tumultuous relationship of Tully with his daughter and ex-wife. Another subplot is the Reverend Joseph Everett and his band of followers who are reminiscent of other cults in the near past, e.g. Waco, Jim Jones, Ruby Ridge, etc. It was a bit too much to have that many correlations in one group - Kava should have chosen one of two, not a slew of them to immulate. All of these subplots took focus off of the murders and left me feeling confused as who what direction this book was going.

Between bouncing between all of the subplots, a lot of the meat is lost and the book is tedious until about two-thirds of the way through. That's when Kava picks up the action and the tale becomes entertaining. Even though it was entertaining in the last few chapters, it was very predictable and calling it a mystery is a stretch.

Character development was at times very well done and at other times lacking. There were so many of Everett's followers that I became confused as to which young person was who. Maggie's mother continues to be described as an alcoholic who's self destructive behavior could finally do her in. Descriptions of her and scenes in this book left me shaking my head and wondering how Maggie could become so successful being raised by someone like Katherine. Tully's ex-wife on the other hand needs a dose of reality. When she runs into him at a revival, and he's one the job, her tantrum about how he's following her and trying to ruin her life was just too much. Someone slap her out of her hysteria, please! The other characters are numerous and none really grabbed my attention. It was almost as if Kava threw them all in to confuse the reader. Didn't work with me - I knew the killer's identity almost from the beginning.

And Maggie's love interest - the drop dead gorgeous hunk from Nebraska was merely mentioned in this book... when will we see more of him? I think Maggie needs to have some personality brought forth and no personal life in this book makes for a very dull Maggie O'Dell!

I thoroughly enjoyed Split Second and A Perfect Evil (the first two books in this series) and am hoping Alex Kava returns to that kind of performance. This one was mediocre at best.

4 out of 5 stars Good writing but it's time for Maggie to retire.......2005-11-21

I wasn't impressed by her last book, but I liked the preview of 'Soulcatcher' so when I saw a copy in a charity shop the next day needless to say I snapped it up. This was a big improvement, especially since it dropped the tired old 'serial killer who is obsessed with female FBI agent' plot in favour of a much more original story about a dangerous cult run by a charismatic priest. I even sat up late to finish it and found the end quite satisfactory, though maybe it didn't quite live up to the exciting opening chapter.

However, as others have said, Maggie is a major drag - always obsessing about her father's death, her mother's alcoholism (though she seems to be heading that way herself), about some or other victim she could have saved - whatever ... I have to agree with her soon-to-be ex-husband and her mother than she should leave the FBI. She is psychologically unsuited to the job as she appears unable to compartmentalise her experiences and she appears to ignore procedure and makes some very elementary mistakes - including one during her inevitable confrontation with the killer - which costs the life of yet another innocent victim. Alex is much better when she is writing about virtually any other character - perhaps she would be best to drop Maggie and start writing some more original stuff which I'm sure she's capable of. Not that this is likely to happen though when she's created such a marketable franchise ...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-07-24

This was the first Alex Kava book I read. I loved it so much that I bought every book she has written to date regarding the Maggie O'Dell series. I can't wait for the next book to come out. Great reading and keeps you holding on to the end. Awesome book!

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea.......2007-08-16

Having lost my husband recently I was drawn to the idea of Angel Catcher. I purchased three of the journals, one for myself and one for each of our children, who are adults and live away from home.
I plan to purchase the books to give to family and friends who lose a loved one in lieu of flowers or other forms of expressions of sympathy.

I only have one problem with the journal. I am 62 years old and don't see as well as I used to. The print is so small and light in color that I cannot see unless I use a magnifying glass in addition to glasses to see it. I have had others look at it and they have to strain to see the print also. I hope this can be improved in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who's had a loss.......2007-03-12

this is an excellent book for anyone who has had a loss. I run a support group and highly recommend this book to help work through the hard times experienced through grief.

5 out of 5 stars Cleanse your soul with this journal!.......2005-09-23

One of my friends gave me this journal after the death of my father in 1998. It has helped me "cleanse my soul" of the grief and heartache and pain of losing someone who your world revolves around. It has helped me so much so, that I have purchased large quantities of these journals to give to people as my own personal ministry to them. Somehow the "giving" of these journals makes my father's death a little easier to live with - in fact almost 6 years later - it still does. There are days I just go back to read the things I wrote and am conforted by my progress in healing and hope others I have given them to along the way are as well.

The greatest thing about this journal are the open ended questions and statements for you to fill in with whatever your feeling and thoughts are right then. And it leaves enough room for you to come back later and write more - it gives you a look over time of how you WERE feeling versus how you ARE feeling. The REALNESS of this journal is what draws me to it. Personally though, I hope you never need it.

4 out of 5 stars COMFORTING/SAFE PLACE .......2005-08-22

A few weeks after my mom died, I ordered this book. I reviewed it in the book store and decided it was a fit for my loss and mourning process.

It has been a great source of comfort and relief for me. When I write in the journal, the words just flow and the pages fill; sometimes I continue writing on subsequent pages. Not all of the headings/topics fit the subject or reflection I am writing, but I find a fitting topic and the words flow.

Since her death, this journal has helped me through the entire year to express my inner feelings. At first I would cry a little after competing a segment. Now, it's a comfort and like a friend to go to--a solace away--hidden garden away from the world who doesn't have time or the empathy to hear my inner thoughts (I wouldn't share these thoughts or reflcetions with just anyone). They are private reflections and thougts for the book, my mom, and myself. The results: I am free to live, love, and be myself again.

If I had the time, I could sit and write in this book for hours. I am a believer in journaling and I have written on a professioanl basis.

5 out of 5 stars To help you through your period of mourning.......2005-02-24

A dear friend bought me this book within days of me losing my husband to cancer. We all have different ways of dealing with death, and as a young widow of 33, this book was an important piece in the process of helping me confront my grief.

I would leaf through the book and randomly select a page that matched the way I was feeling on that particular day. I'd pick up a train of thought, a memory, an emotion; and I'd begin to write, and write, and write, until I felt I'd expressed as much as I could, until I'd released tiny pieces of guilt, anger, despair, loneliness. Angel Catcher became a positive vehicle for catharsis; a record of my transition from searing grief and sadness to a place of healing and great peace.

I have since bought this book for friends who have suffered their own losses. For me, it was a compassionate and constructive channel for dealing with bereavement, and I am very grateful for the comfort it brought me.

May the book continue to bring light and hope to others in need.

Book Description

As director of the elite Foreign Counterintelligence Activity, author Stuart Herrington was the U.S. Army's top counterintelligence officer. In this thrilling and informative account he details one of the most damaging and delicate cases of espionage ever committed against the United States. Between 1972 and 1988, thousands of highly classified documents were sold to the Soviet Union and her Warsaw pact surrogates. They were secrets so sensitive that had war broken out in Central Europe, our ability to defend our NATO allies would have been seriously compromised. It was up to Herrington and his team to root out the elusive spy ring responsible for this treachery. An intriguing page-turner with more twists and turns than a spy novel, Traitors Among Us guides us through the intricate spy catcher's world of Cold War Berlin, showing us how the "game" was played when the stakes were as high as national survival.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and exciting thriller.......2005-03-25

Excellent book. I couldn't let it go and managed to read it in 4 days. Written so that you don't have to be a spook to understand it. Again, a very good book. Buy it, read it.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Cold War memoir.......2005-02-01

A meaty, readable memoir of an officer's counterintelligence career during the Cold War. It could get a bit tedious in places, and Herrington has an annoying habit of inserting unnecessary rah-rah patriotism, but overall a solid read. The Clyde Conrad case is one of the most important, but least known, spy cases in U.S. history.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating from cover to cover...fantastic narrative here.......2004-04-14

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but once I read the first page I was hooked. The author provides two classic cases of the worst treachery the United States military has ever been exposed to, and he writes well because he was involved in both of them. The intrigue and research into the cross-departmental assistance was very informative in light of today's "territorial" exclusiveness. A well written work that is easy for a lay person to follow, I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars a worthy book, but tedious.......2003-04-20

Perhaps the best thing about this book is the author's obvious desire to obtain recognition for those in his agency whose work, of necessity, had to be secret and hidden; they commonly worked extremely long hours, for months and years, at duties that were tedious and repetitious. They deserve this recognition and our highest respect. Unfortunately, the book shares qualities with the work and often goes on and on giving daily details of surveillance, meetings, briefings, etc, on almost an hourly basis at times. Thus, a suspect is followed here, then there, then back home, then to somewhere else and eventually I found myself turning pages. Also, the author makes excessive use of long paragraphs of the "little did we know then that our suspicions would lead to something that would take years, much money, heartbreak, frustration,..." variety. I finished the book because the story is important and disturbing; it doesn't take much to imagine how these intelligence betrayals would have hurt if WW III had broken out. But, after the first half, I was skipping over portions and reading only those that told of new happenings in the plot. Hard-core espionage junkies will like this book best (and those who may themselves have done some work along this line).

5 out of 5 stars Cautinnary Reminder of the Value of HUMINT and CI.......2002-01-11

There are two major triumphs covered in this volume. One for each side. Fortunately the NATO side won but it would have been a close thing indeed if the ball had dropped during the seventies and eighties when the war plans of the north central forces were being leaked to the Soviets almost as they were being written.
Too many of the previous reviewers have treated this book as a reality based version of the usual spy fiction. Well, keep in mind, that no matter how sexy the fictioneers have it this is not James Bond. As open as he was, he would have been knocked off years ago. If you saw "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", the TV series, you came away with a much better sense of the numbing boredom and tediousness of much of the CI and spy's tradecraft. I refer you to a classic of the reality genre, McCargar's Short Course in the Secret War (cf) and the more recent book by Ib Melchior (cf)
The amount of time it took to find the penetrators and then to build a case so that they could be punished is just one of the difficulties detailed herein. The other and most difficult side of the coin is, how do you find out what was copied in the first place? In the West, we did not have the constant paranoia caused by the KGB in the East and the effectiveness of a closed society such as was the DDR in keeping tabs on its citizens.
Sure, at the first hint of a leak you could shut down and get rid of everyone who might have done it, but that is doubly counter productive, as as is so often shown on the TV series Law and Order, the first suspect is often not the one at all, and the real one will go to ground. The second is that those who are left will become so paranoid that they will not be able to keep their eyes on their desks from looking over their shoulders so much.
Finally, this puts the lie to certain events in the intelligence community some years back when the entire HUMINT apparatus was almost fatally disrupted by belief in IMINT and SIGINT to keep track of things. Well, first things first, if the object cannot be seen such as a document or is never spoken of in a communication, then technical means are useless. All these cases herein depended on timeless face to face interaction between spy and case officer.
We have seen this again today in that we have no persons who can go into deep cover and infiltrate the other side. And few who can even interrogate fluently in the languages of the Middle East. The DEA and the FBI and Treasury agents have proven time and time again that infiltration is necessary to solve major crimes. How much more important is it when national existence is at stake.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in Love with Holden Caulfield (and J.D. Salinger).......2007-08-07

To give "The Catcher in the Rye" 5 stars is like giving "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare" 5 stars. I'm not kidding.

I read "The Catcher in the Rye" in the 8th grade. And, okay, I was a little bit more than entranced by the (shocking!) use of profanity. This was, after all, 1968.

But even more, I was mesmerized and enthralled, I was even swept off my little flat feet, by Holden's sensitivity, his absolute purity of heart. Okay, he does wrong things, he engages a prostitute, he flunks out of a very expensive private school when he knows his poor parents have already been put through absolute hell (his younger brother Allie dies of leukemia at the age of 13 and this has already happened at the time the book is being narrated). But at the same time, he is an innocent. He is caught up in place and time that he can't make sense of, simply because he is who he is. He cares, and he tries to take care of others who are lost and floundering. It is so obvious that he is a diamond among rhinestones.

So he doesn't fit in anywhere, and neither do most of us. We're just trying to find our way. This is one of the most brilliant studies of adolesence ever written. Holden feels, he lives and breathes, he is, for all his flaws, or maybe even because of them, almost a Christlike figure.

J.D. Salinger wrote a book about an adolescent who was, in his way, much like an archetype of innocence. For this he is should be lauded as a literary genius. This book should be taught everywhere as a sort of guidebook to values clarification for the youth of America.

Totally aside from that, it is very funny and compulsively readable. No one can possibly be bored with this book, despite its seeming lack of plot.

"The Catcher in the Rye" is a life-changing book. Read it. You will never be the same.
