When Bob Anderson first published Stretching in 1980, the fitness movement was new to most Americans. The term aerobics had just been coined in 1968, and few people outside bodybuilding circles had heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger yet. Now, fitness is such old hat that it's even had a backlash or two. Lots of the original ideas have been called into question, including the preeminence of aerobic exercise. But flexibility is bigger than ever; Pilates and yoga are two of the fastest-growing fitness programs in the U.S. in the early 2000s. The type of stretching Anderson recommends--called "static," meaning you sit in one place and hold the stretch for a specified amount of time--isn't exactly trendy, but it remains the most accessible way for entry-level exercisers to improve their flexibility. (Or, perhaps more important, to keep from losing whatever flexibility they have as they get older.)
Those who already have the version of the book that's been put out by Shelter Publications since 1980 won't find a whole lot that's new in this 20th-anniversary version. Some of the simple drawings by Anderson's wife, Jean, have been updated to show athletes in sport-specific outfits doing stretching routines, and there are more routines than before. The new edition includes routines for children, stretches to do in front of the TV, and some exercises to do before and after gardening. Plus, the old staples remain--stretching routines for all muscle groups, and pre- and postplay sequences for common sports (football, baseball, basketball) and a few uncommon ones (equestrian, motocross, rodeo). He's also created routines for sports that barely existed in 1980, such as snowboarding, triathloning, and inline skating.
The constant in Stretching is ease of use. Anderson doesn't need a lot of complex explanations because the drawings are so easy to follow. He makes it clear that stretching should make you feel better, not worse, and that it's not a competition. Any little bit you can do is better than not doing anything. That's a timeless message, which is why his book has been such an valuable reference for the past 20 years. --Lou Schuler

Ultimate Sports Nutrition
Frederick C. Hatfield Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0809248875 |
Book Description
In an age when the winning edge is measured in milliseconds, athletes must apply every resource to gain that edge. Ultimate Sports Nutrition offers state-of-the-art methods of diet and supplementation for achieving super fitness and peak athletic performance. Nutrition and fitness expert Dr. Fred Hatfield not only gives the latest advancements in nutritional sciences but tells you how to implement them into a total nutritional program that can drastically improve both strength and endurance. More importantly, he explains--in layman's terms, perhaps for the first time--how to enhance chemical interactions to achieve superior performance capabilities, carrying the reader light years beyond Durk Pearson's formula for "life extension" into the realm of life enhancement. Interspersed with graphics, charts, and anecdotes from top athletes and coaches, this book details guidelines for gaining weight, losing weight, improving muscle-to-fat ratio, and eating and supplementing during the season, off-season, and preseason. While keeping in mind the specifics of each sport and its physical demands, Hatfield discusses it all--from amino acids to energy enhancers, from herbs to metabolic activators to effective Soviet formulas--giving today's athlete the ultimate in peak performance. Dr. Frederick C. Hatfield, author of the bestselling Bodybuilding: A Scientific Approach, has written more than 15 books on training, conditioning, nutrition, and bodybuilding.Customer Reviews:
very un informative.......2004-01-04
Good informative facts about nutrition.......2002-03-19
Waste of money.......2001-12-07
The book had very simple (I mean EXTREMELY simple) definitions of what protein, carbs and fats are, but nothing more about them. Then it briefly described vitamins and minerals. That's all ok, but does it help yet? No it doesn't. When it comes down to figuring what to eat and how much, you can throw this book out the window. How much weggies? How many fruits, what kind? You're on your own.
The book then goes on to describe the "ultimate" supplementation plan. BCAA's ok. Then you get a whole chapter on Bee Pollen(!) and many chapters on other (stuff) that nobody would buy today. The stuff mentioned in this part of the book is just so outdated (...) that it is sad and disturbing stuff to even read. The book has not been updated for creatine, vanadyl, MRPs or anything from the 90s.
In the end of the book, there are three chapters on weight management (gaining, losing, peaking for competition). The gaining chapter is too simple, gee eat more. That's about it. The weight loss chapter is not much better (but a little bit yes). I think the third chapter may actually help some competitive bodybuilders, but I haven't tried it.
Last part of the book is a collection of some food recipes. I didn't find much of interest there.
I found this book to be a major disappointment and mostly waste of money. Unless you have no idea whatsoever about what carbs, protein and fats are in the most basic sense, you are better off with some other book.

ilg's winter athlete.......2000-02-13
nearly one third of the book is devoted to sport specific training programs-complete with illustrations-distilled from a lifetime devoted to outdoor sport both competitive and non competitive.
besides nordic and alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice climbing and mountaineering, the winter athlete covers a lot of ground that's not snow covered as well. there are chapters on cycling (road & mtb), skating, rock climbing, trail running, kayaking . .
there is something in this book for everyone. everytime i pick it up i learn something new.
along with sport specific training advice, ilg also covers general strength and endurance training, nutrition, flexibility and mental preparation.
ilg's training philosophy is not without it's critics. he believes that everything an athlete does can be considered training. how you live your life is how you perform your sport. ilg is apt to tell a weight lifter to free his mind and his body will follow or a runner to "run with the earth not upon it." ilg's writing style is informative and fun. he loves the natural world and it shows.
you can accept his philosophy or not. for the humble sum of twenty bucks you get a stunning buffet of information that you can partake of or leave alone.
what more can i say. winter athlete rocks.

Staying Fit Over 50: Conditioning for Outdoor Activities
Jim Sloan Manufacturer: Mountaineers Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
Accessories: ASIN: 0898866685 |
Book Description
* New approaches and the latest research on the benefits of training over 50As the baby boomers hit 50, our notions of aging are changing rapidly. Instead of viewing 50 as a stop sign for strenuous activities, scientists find that we can keep getting stronger, faster, and more durable at 50 and beyond.
Staying Fit Over 50 provides all the inspiration, evidence, advice, and insights needed for developing or maintaining new levels of fitness or new outdoor activities in an aging body. The first section examines attitudes toward aging, the effects of aging and the benefits of exercise, gender myths, psychological hurdles and rewards, nutrition, and more. The second half explores in individual sections the physiology of each major endurance training sport-running, cycling, rowing (plus kayaking and canoeing), swimming, skiing, walking, snowshoeing, and climbing. The book includes tips on how to get started; how to improve your current sport; equipment; techniques; workouts; mental approaches; injuries; and lists of other specialized resources.

Motivational without being specific. Too bad........2007-01-25
Someone else still needs to write a book on the subject.......2004-11-22
STAYING fit into your fifties.......2003-05-24
It is scientific in tone and attitude, full of good facts and the kind of knowledge that is testable in a college classroom. Weak on motivation and push to get and keep going. The first half is a introduction to exercise physiology, with the chapter on the brain(6) especially well done. The second half is a introduction to several different outdoors sports to open up vistas to the already fit---skiing, swimming, running, walking, rowing. And that is the problem for me with the book, it is preaching to the choir, those who are already fit. Who exercised through their 40's rather than reading and playing with the computer as did i. So if you are in the targetted audience this is a very good book, but if not it is just ok....
Motivation, push, desire. These are the things needed by novice walkers, not provided by the book. It assumes you are already on the positive feedback curve where you feel better because you are fit and now need a variety of things to do with your body. Assuming this type of person the book is a very good buy as it will give you a few new facts and lots of choices to investigate.
So it is not directed to me, or the rest of us need to get fit bfore the fat kills us....But rather to the rest of you who approach 50 worrying that the best years are behind you. This is a good place for you to start.
Don't Stop At Fifty, or Sixty, or Seventy.......2002-09-07
Good material, could have been better for non-jocks.......2002-05-02
