5 out of 5 stars best scifi compilation ive ever read.......2003-04-04

Ive had this book since 1989. Most collections of short stories have a few interesting stories and the rest are filler but thats not the case here. The sheer number of excellent stories in this one volume is a shock. the common thread being that each had space vessels in it, Though the stories have little more in common than that, except being excellent. My favorites would have to be Far Centaurus by A.E. Van Voght, a moving tale of a suspended animation ship. A Chance Encounter by A. Bertram Chandler, a romantic first contact story. The Oceans are Wide- a really cool novella from Frank M. Robinson on one of my favorite subjects-generation ships. Avoidance Situation by James McConnell
a chilling tale of First Contact with the Dakn Empire. If you can find this collection, buy it!

    Book Description

How can we help African American and Latino students perform better in the classroom and on exams? In Keepin' It Real: School Success Beyond Black and White, Prudence Carter argues that what is needed is a broader recognition of the unique cultural styles and practices that non-white students bring to the classroom. Based on extensive interviews and surveys of students in New York, she demonstrates that the most successful negotiators of our school systems are the multicultural navigators, culturally savvy teens who draw from multiple traditions, whether it be knowledge of hip hop or of classical music, to achieve their high ambitions.

    Book Description

Beyond Boundaries-Reflections of Indian and U.S. Scholars documents experiential learning of exchange scholars from India and the U.S.A. These essays from Fulbright Scholars, Post-Doc Researchers, Humphrey Fellows, and participants of International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), and East-West Center, provide a diverse spectrum of their cultural and academic experiences.

The personal essays in this collection are interesting, shocking, and unforgettable. Anyone interested in studying in the United States or going to India ought to read this book for it provides a rare perspective that comes from observing a country from the students' point of view. Here, students learn, share and make the connections that go on to the making of a better and safer world for us and for future generations.

While these essays do not necessarily present a representative picture either of India or the U.S.A., the sketches do describe exchange experiences of interest to anyone who is concerned with people, cultures and diversity.

The production of this book was partially sponsored by the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology. www.FulbrightAcademy.org

I really enjoyed reading the reminices of Fulbright Scholars from India to U.S. It is a fantastic collection and a handful respurce for Cultural Communications/Study classes.

    Well Done!

5 out of 5 stars From the Editor.......2007-03-25

This book presents a wonderful collage of 61 Essays, 34 from Indian Scholars visiting the U.S., and 27 from their U.S. counterparts visiting India, between 1959 and 2006 and for durations ranging from 6 weeks to couple of years. Spanning 47 years of exciting history of the Fulbright Program, these intimate narratives of Fulbright Scholars, Post-Doc Researchers, Humphrey Fellows, participants of International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), and East West Center Fellows from the two largest democracies in the world reveal the multidimensional images of India and U.S. to the citizens of both countries. These interesting renderings also foreground how global calamities and cataclysms require to be addressed not from the narrow grooves of ideas and ideologies but from the vantage point of healing fountains of human compassion and friendship.

    Book Description

In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well written but not my cup of tea.......2006-06-10

I'm too far removed from the author to appreciate this book. This memoir is written with the assumption that the reader is familiar with his articles on cricket, is as avid fan of the game of cricket and an avid reader. Well, I have the third qualification for this book except that I haven't read his favorite book: Vanity Fair. To someone who follows cricket will come away with much more from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its reputation.......2005-12-01

Beyond a Boundary reached number 3 in the UK Observer Sport Monthly's poll of the best fifty sports books of all time. It is burdened with enormous praise; amongst the quotes included on the cover are: `To say "the best cricket book ever written" is pifflingly inadequate praise' and `Great claims have been made for [Beyond a Boundary] since its first appearance in 1963: that it is the greatest sports book ever written; that it brings the outsider a privileged insight into West Indian culture; that it is a severe examination of the colonial condition. All are true.'

The praise is justified. The only way that this is not the best cricket book ever written is if you do not consider it as a cricket book. It is beautifully crafted, transcending the genre: an engaging combination of cricket book, personal memoir and political and cultural commentary. There are other very good books about cricket but this is something more than that. It is a cricket book, a history book, a sociology book and more.

CLR James is a fascinating man: widely travelled, spending long periods in England and the USA as well as Trinidad, an important writer and journalist, a politically active Marxist, instrumental in getting Frank Worrell appointed captain of the West Indies team. The book covers a wide range of subjects including his childhood in Trinidad; great cricketers he has known and watched; Caribbean politics amongst others. For cricket lovers one of the beautiful things about the book is that James loves cricket, he appreciates it as an art form. He possesses the clarity of thought and the prose to convey this love and appreciation to the reader.

In places the book shows its age (it was written in 1963); it is very much of its time: a product of the anti-colonial struggle, and the emergence of West Indies cricket as a serious challenge to the domination of England and Australia. In some places events have overtaken some of his observations and some of the language jars. It is still a fantastic book - amazingly insightful and interesting.

This is a book that no genuine cricket lover should be without.

4 out of 5 stars Fortunately about more than Cricket.......2003-09-11

The best blurb endorsing Beyond a Boundary is "To say `the best cricket book ever written' is piffingly inadequate praise." It succinctly conveys this is a great book, is about cricket, is about other things as well, and is written in language you don't use that often. Beyond a Boundary was published in 1963, but was written over most of the previous 35 years or so. The author, CLR James, was a West Indian Cricket fan, journalist, and patriot. The book is organised according to his reminisces of other Cricket players, most significantly better players than James (although it sounds like James was a quality player, just not an international class player). Now, any American thinking about reading this book already knows there is no such thing as a "famous cricket player". These people may be national heroes in other places, but one of the most famous cricket players, WG Grace, was to me just a name that reminds me of a floor wax company. So be forewarned that James is prone to using phrases like "the story of which is known to all" when for me little was known.

It is either fortunate that there is so much else beside cricket in this book or unfortunate that there is so much cricket in this book. There are many chapters where James goes on about the role of cricket in a boy's life, role of cricket in society, and the role of cricketers in society. These are the best parts of the book, especially if one is able to substitute the word "sport" for "cricket". These chapters do not dwell on the detailed points of the game, but simply need the reader to acknowledge that cricket is a game that people care about. Any sports fan should be able to make that leap. He does a great job describing how sport got organised in the West Indies, and the meaning of that organization.

Perhaps the single best section of the book is about how sport came to be prominent a prominent feature in society and how those that dismiss sport as a part of culture are basically being snobs. The rise of cricket and sport in Britain was the avant-garde of a cultural shift that came to the US just a shade later. We adapted our own sports, but aggressively so to be differentiated from the Brits who were doing the same. James is able to describe the changing role and position of sport in society with a keen social historical eye, as well as do a lengthy analysis on the aesthesis of sport (which unfortunately aggressively privileges cricket).

James lived through a period of tremendous political and social change in the West Indies. He played a central role in the movement for independence and in breaking down class and racial barriers. He labels himself a Marxist early in the book, and I am not one to argue with his assessment of his politics, but from the stories in this book he sounds more like a democrat (little d). Through great skill he manages to give the reader a sense of West Indian society and its changes while always making sure that Cricket is his main subject matter.

But, the flaw of the book, for an American, is that Cricket is the subject matter. I have a better than average knowledge of cricket for an American, but the references in the book were still far over my head. I was lost when he went on about the interactions between batter and bowler, not even understanding the terminology. I think a reader would be even more lost if they didn't even understand the basic rules of cricket, including the scoring system. This is a great book. It is a satisfying read, and one that demonstrates a tremendous command of language and structure on the part of the author. I would almost say it is worth learning the basics of cricket to make all this accessible. But the key word in that sentence is almost. But by all means, if you know cricket then read this book, but then you probably already have.

    5 out of 5 stars An Earth-Shattering Book.......2002-05-04

James's "Beyond a Boundary" is one of the finest literary works of the twentieth century. It asks questions that go to the heart of the human condition: where do democratic ideas come from? How does one strive towards self-emancipation in a totalitarian world? What tools may dismantle colonialism and neo-colonialism? What is the relationship between art and everyday life? Oh, and there's the social and cultural analysis of cricket, and how this endeavor fits into the larger picture. "Beyond a Boundary" is often referred to as the founding text of postcolonialism. It is more, far more. A caveat is in order, however. One cannot rush through this book. Take time to digest the ideas. A background in the history of the West Indies is also helpful

1 out of 5 stars James is too full of himself.........2002-02-12

Parts of this book, esp where he discusses the aesthetic value of cricket are tolerable. Otherwise, most of the book is about trying to tell the reader what an intellectual James is. I'm afraid this book is less about cricket and more about James. He's too full of himself and that diminishes the value of what could have been a great book.
Also, the writing leaves a lot to be desired.

4 out of 5 stars Book that challenges tradition.......2002-01-28

This book challenges the concept of the Christian Mega-Church, and the role of Christians in the modern world. In Church Without Walls Petersen puts forth the following two point thesis:

    1. Christians are in the world (not separate from it) in order to spread the good news about Jesus.
    2. Every believer has a role in this process.

I think that he successfully argues his point, and provides a litany of supporting evidence (mostly historical) to show why the concept of the Church (the Body of Christ) has lost its place in the world over the centuries. By explaining a short history of the Church, Petersen points out that many good ideas that were relevant in their time, have become steep traditions in the Church, and lost their effectiveness. While this argument is interesting, especially if you do not know a lot of Church history (I fall into this category), it does get a little boring in certain sections of the book.

The part of the book which I found most compelling, was about my role as a Christian in the Church. Basically, Petersen points out that the "If we build it they will come" philosophy that many churches follow today is not working. We are not reaching the unchurched, and will continue to fail in this effort, unless a change is made. More specifically, every Christian needs to be out the in the world, modeling and explaining Christ's love to an American culture which has become quite indifferent to the Church.

I think that Petersen's analysis is accurate and convincing. He spells out how we are to do this, and what the Church should do to support this effort. If this topic is of interest to you, then you should read this book. It will challenge you to rethink your role in the Church, and take a hard look at whether or not the Christian community is being effective in a world that so desparately needs to hear the truth and love of Jesus.

Although I think that Chuck Colson's book "The Body" will give you a more profound look at today's Church, this book does a better job of explaining our role in the process. Coupled together, these two books will hopefully inspire Christians to step out of their comfort zones, and truly make a difference in the modern world.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book!.......2001-12-22

This is a balanced yet radical new look at what it means to be the Church in our day and in our culture. Peterson reminds us that Jesus gave us the command to "Go" into our world and make disciples. Instead we have told the world to "Come" to us! Peterson's analysis of the form of the Church being elastic enough to fit the function in each location and culture is truly life-changing; I was changed by this book. I have given copies to many friends who are also being challenged to "Go" in new and exciting ways. Out of five stars I would give it six!

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Balanced View.......2000-04-08

This book represents a very well researched and balanced rethinking of much of the Church Growth material that has been generated since "Understanding Church Growth" was published in the 60's. It presents a honest, Biblical view of all the stuff and fluff and gets down to the heart of the matter, namely reaching people for Christ.

    5 out of 5 stars Much-needed Biblical evaluation.......1998-03-07

I highly recommend this book to all Christians who want a well-reasoned approach to the Biblical concept of the Church. Petersen challenges the reader to re-think traditional, cultural "add-ons" to corporate worship of God and to seriously consider St. Paul's practice of "becoming all things to all men" for the sake of the spread of the Gospel to those foreign to practices familiar to the American Christian. -- Joseph W. Technology Has Limits. Supply Chain Synthesis Has No Boundaries.

So your company has jumped on the e-business train, and youre confident that the opportunities offered by technology are endless. But technology is limited, and your B2B and B2C strategies will only succeed if you understand and implement Supply Chain Synthesis (SCS).

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sounds good, but "where's the beef"?.......2001-02-21

As a professional in the area of Supply Chain Management (SCM), I was initially excited about reading the book. It appeared as though it was going to finally address some of the problems that SCM has run into in implementation.

The author does identify some real shortcomings in the SCM literature/practice. These extensions will primarily be useful to those companies who have begun implementing, in earnest, SCM.

Unfortunately, there are many problems with the book that become apparent under a thorough review...

Once started, it quickly became obvious that many of the criticisms about SCM are, more accurately, criticisms about the way SCM is implemented in the real world. Most of the Supply Chain Synthesis (SCS) concepts are from the SCM literature. However, those concepts do not seem to make it into practice in SCM. (It should be noted that the authors SCS DOES provide some extension to the SCM concept, though the extension is not as much as the author would like the reader to believe.)

However, to get some "benefit" out of the book, the reader often has to apply their own experience and interpretation. Once the reader begins to do this, then the book appears to provide some content. However, if you view the book from the perspective of someone who either doesn't know anything about SCM/SCS or is looking for solutions to Supply Chain problems, you quickly realize that there is little real substance.

In addition, the author tends to gloss over problems that organizations, who are trying to participate in the Supply Chain, run into. From stockholders/stakeholders who have concerns that are not necessarily conducive to SCS to saying things like "the company simply has to use good practices to solve their problems and good practices is what SCS is all about". The author does not detail what these "good practices" are and ignores the fact that if it were as easy to do as say, managers would not have a need to read books like this one.

The book also contains many excessive "buzzwords" and generalizations, and the author frequently uses "buzz" words and topics in the book without expanding on HOW they INTEGRATE into his SCS concept.

Finally, there are some inaccuracies in some of the ideas the author tries to integrate (especially with regards to the Theory of Constraints). Another notable problem is that the author frequently contradicts himself. The author spends much time describing the "ideal", but almost NO time describing how to achieve that ideal.

I almost had the feeling it was an advertisement for his consulting practice... "If you like the sound of the ideal and want to learn how to actually achieve it, then call us." I also thought it was interesting that Dr. Tompkins uses his own publishing company rather than getting published through a mainstream publisher in this genre such as Sage, McMillan, Irwin, etc.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Picture.......2001-01-05

Some of our current Board members are not from backgrounds that allow them to easily understand the changes occurring in supply chains, and Jim Tompkins' book has helped bring them into the 21st Century.

John C. Lucy, III, CEO Pallet Management Systems

    3 out of 5 stars Supply chain.......2000-12-13

The over all book is running commentary of a lecture presented to SCM group. Jim has tried to add new horizon to supply chain management with "synthesis". The book is okay for general SCS(supply chain synthesis), but not have any detail architecture. Good for student, but Jim needs to emphasis on detail architecture and what should be done to achieve synthesis of complete SC.

    4 out of 5 stars A fairly general overview.......2000-09-19

The book gives a very high-level overview of SCM. There is a lot of jargon but it is an ideal starting point for understanding the concept of Supply chain management. Some of the chapters, especially the ones documenting the differences between SC Management and SC Synthesis, are well written. Not of much use for Supply chain professionals.

4 out of 5 stars Supply Chain (Something) SCS.......2000-06-09

This book is well worth the short time it will take to read. For me as a Dane I did it in two days. James A. Tompkins uses very good examples to explain the difference between Supply Chain Management (SCM) and his idea Supply Chain Synthesis (SCS). It provides a good overview of SCS, and as consultant in Supply Chain (Something) and e-business I agree that SCM and the existing ERP-system do not solve the problem in the future. "No Boundaries" tells in an easy form, what is missing and I like the clear definition and explanation of the 8 core competencies of SCS. IT is a book I highly recommend procurement pros. A lot of them will probably not agree (yet) but I think (or hope) they will think. There is no "business as usual" anymore. We are still missing a system solution to the problem and the book does not give the answer either. This is the only missing link in the chain, and the only reason why I do not give the highest rank.

Beyond Boundaries: Humans and Animals, Barbara Noske, Buffalo: Black Rose Books, 1997, 253pp.

Beyond Boundaries, by Barbara Noske, examines the human-animal relationship as well as the animal-human side. Quite often her discourse centers on the notion of power in this centuries old relationship. This is extremely apparent in the discussions about domestication, perspective, and devaluing nature. The book's construction can be reduced into three parts. The first section of Beyond Boundaries, chapters one and two, focuses on the phenomenon of human animal domestication, a forced human-animal relationship which shows the extent to which humans can control and exploit animal resources. Chapters four and five examine human ideas, constructions, and discourses about animals and about humans in relation to animals. The last section explores the animal-human relationship, where the consideration is given to the non-human animal's perspective in nature.

The three themes in Barbara Noske's Beyond Boundaries are (1) the human-animal relationship, (2) the object-status animals are assigned, and (3) humanity's need to reevaluate its perception of animals. The author puts forth very thought provoking arguments. She challenges the social construction of contemporary human-animal relationships and argues that animals should be portrayed as independent beings with special traits and behaviors that contributed to their interactions with people. She also argues that people should adopt a more critical and specific approach to animals. Non-human animals have a wider range of consciousness than do people, according to Noske. She believes that animals are self-aware and have an awareness of their group, biocommunity, other species, and biosphere. Noske explains that to define animals as human-like is to do them a disservice and treat them ahistorically. Instead of increasing their ecological worth, it reduces them to a less aware human status.

Barbara Noske is a philosopher and a cultural anthropologist, but essentially she is a cultural critic. In Beyond Boundaries she critiques the culture of nature. She argues for an interdisciplinary approach to evaluating animals (where humans and non-humans are equal) and nature (where humans are not exclusive of their environment). Barbara Noske tears down the socially constructed boundaries that exist between human and non-human animals. Beyond Boundaries is an asset to feminists, animal activists, scholars, farmers, veterinary clinicians, and anyone interested in the human-animal condition. The author takes a position that few scholars have concerning animals. Some readers may define Noske's views as extreme, especially those people that support an anthropocentric and androcentric worldview. They can not fathom such an integrated view of women, men, animals, and nature. Beyond Boundaries makes one reevaluate their belief systems about nature and their place in it. This book also calls for the creation of an integrated science between anthropology and zoology, which has been created since the book's original publication in 1989. Barbara Noske attacks the way women, animals, and nature have been subordinated by man and exiled literally, emotionally, and physically beyond boundaries.
