5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, wonderful stories.......2007-05-09

I am 100% baseball fan. Since being a kid I was moved by the great players achievements. I enjoyed this bokk throughly. It's a work very well done and a prize for sports book's collectors. The only thing I regret is that, for unknown reasons, some of baseball hall of fame players pictures were not included, namely Harmon Killebrew.

4 out of 5 stars The New York Times tells the story of the New York Yankees.......2004-02-04

A transient American League franchise was plunked down in New York in early 1903, which made last year the 100th anniversary of the team now known as the New York Yankees. As part of the celebration five writers from the sports department of "The New York Times" put together "The New York Yankees Illustrated History." Actually this volume has less photographs than I would have thought, given the title, although most Yankee fans will find enough new shots to justify flipping through the pages, including, believe it or not, a photograph of Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson joking about their infamous "lifestyle" swap.

The volume divides the history of the Yankees into five eras, each of which is defined by decades: (1) The Ruth Years (1903-1929), covered by George Vecsey, covers the most of the first three decades of the team, although Ruth was with the team from 1921 to 1935. This opening chapter sets up the first Yankee dynasty, with black & white photographs focusing on Ruth and the 1927 "Murder's Row" team as well as a collection of Yankee memorabilia by a long-time fan. My favorite shots are of Ruth in 1921, when he was in his physical prime, and Gehrig sitting on the dugout steps watching the team after he benches himself in 1939. (2) Gehrig-DiMaggio (1930s, 40s, 50s), written by Dave Anderson, really focuses primarily on the DiMaggio period, with the Iron Horse as the link between the Babe and Joltin' Joe. Again, the chronology does not quite fit because DiMaggio retired after 1951, but he is the dominant figure in this chapter, which has photographs of his personal life as well as his playing career.

When you see that the next chapter focuses on the 1960s, and who it focuses on, it becomes clear that the major figure who does not get to be worked into a title and who clearly defined the 1950s for the Yankees, was Yogi Berra. Instead, we have (3) Mantle, Maris and the 1960s, by Robert Lipsyte, which elevates Roger Maris and his 61* home runs to the same level of Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Ruth. I really think they are off base here, that the 1950s and 1960s should have been Yogi and Mickey. After all, it is still Yogi, the most beloved living baseball player, who is the only one in history with 10 World Series rings. This chapter has a rare color photograph of a 19 year old Mantle as well as a shot of Mantle and teammate Clip Mapes visiting Mickey's father at a Oklahoma mine, as well as the pivotal moment in the 1951 World Series when Mantle caught his spikes on a drain hole and popped his knee as DiMaggio catches the ball hit by Willie Mays.

For most Yankee fans the last two chapters deal with the New York Yankees they have probably known most of their lives: (4) Life With Steinbrenners (1970s, 80s), by Murray Chass, reminds everybody that you could have Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Billy Martin, Ron Guidry, Goose Gossage and whoever you wanted on the field, but the Yankees were dominated by the personality of the Boss. (5) The Modern Yankees, by Buster Olney, looks at how the dynasty that started dominating baseball at the end of the 1990s was put together, ending, ironically, with the Yankees losing the 2001 World Series in the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Which meant the Yankees had only won four World Championships in the last six seasons. They are photographs of most of the key players associated with the new Yankee dynasty.

The 150 photographs in "The New York Yankees Illustrated History" come from the library of the Baseball Hall of Fame and extensive archives of "The New York Times." Interestingly enough, only the photographs in the last chapter are color shots. The text provides not so much a history of a franchise as the stories of the legendary players and great games. The writing here is certainly in the tradition of sports reporting more than history, which is quite appropriate for a richly illustrated volume. This is not a definitive history, nor is it the final word on a pictorial history of the team, but it is certainly strong enough in both departments to be worth a look by Yankee fans.

2 out of 5 stars Baseball is to broad a title for this narrow look.......2007-10-14

Call the film something other than "Baseball". That word is far too broad for what we get to see.

Let's look at one installment: "Inning 8: 1960-1970".

Point One: There must be very little baseball history in the midwest U.S. because "Baseball" tells very little from it. This must be mentioned as a disclaimer. However, there are stories from the midwest that should never be overlooked. For example, the 1968 season in Detroit seemed to fit so well into the flow of the documentary. A city in Detroit that was ravaged by race riots with a team that lived, breathed and tasted the experience, but also drank the cup of victory. That story is as much about the city of Detroit as it is baseball. It is etched in the city's history and it is unreasonable not to tell such a story in the context of the decade. I wonder what went into why it was not told or how it ended up on the cutting room floor? Was this at the request of Curt Flood, who was featured in this decade's segment? It was Flood's stumble and defensive miscue in center field that handed Detroit a game seven and series victory. In general, I found the lack of midwestern baseball stories to be as aggravating as baseball coverage is in general from the national media. The St. Louis Cardinals are the only midwest representative in this segment. Regretfully, this is the case with the one documentarian who can get a grant package big enough to produce such a large series on national public television. Where is the public service?

Secondly, the tone of the film is terrible. It's rather depressing to watch. It relies too heavily on a few commentators and subjects. Those historians who talk about their experience with events as fans are dispassionate about the game. The film should have found fans instead of historians. Since it clearly was not concerned with any sort of comprehensive history, but instead storytelling, go to the people who can tell stories best. Those would be baseball fans, not historians. Trust me, the history of the game is easily told without historians speaking to their personal connection and childhood experiences.

The film could have been a great deal of fun to watch, even without being comprehensive. I would love to have seen some of the passion and excitement of the New York Mets fans in 1969, even though the Mets received too much attention at that point of the eighth segment.

Overall, the set is not fun to watch. I've been a passionate baseball fan since as early as I can remember but "Baseball" by Ken Burns is not something that I am attracted to, but rather felt the need to endure to be able to claim I hadn't missed it. That stinks.

5 out of 5 stars The consummate set of videos about Baseball........2007-05-17

Contained in these ten DVD are just about every historical moment in baseball.

Inning 1 Baseball from its inception in the 1840's to the 1900's This explores baseballs roots from Abner Doubleday to the beginnings of what we know as modern day baseball.

Inning 2 1900 to 1910. The beginning of the World Series. Great footage and photos of old parks and players.

Inning 3 1910 TO 1920. Covers Babe Ruth, the Black sox, Grover Cleveland Alexander and more. Footage of Fenway being built

Inning 4 1920 to 1930 Really the beginnings of the Yankee dynasty but the Cardinals rule the Natonal league with the famed gass house gang.

Inning 5 1930 to 1940. More footage of all the great stars of the day, Ruth, Di Maggio, Williams and more.

Inning 6 1940 to 1950. The effects of war on the American pastime. The splendid splinter goes to war, he comes back and picks up where he left off.

Inning 7 1950 to 1960. The Yankee dynasty continues. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, The shot heard around the world, Don Larsons perfect game. The Giants and Dodgers pick and leave.

Inning 8 1960 to 1970. The Los Angeles Angels are born, The Kansas City A's become the Oakland A's, The Royals and Mets are born. The Padres are born and move into a small stadium outside of San Diego. And then there was the Seattle Pilots. Those amazin Mets win the World series. Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax get agents but are unsuccessful in changing baseballs anti trust act and re sign with the Dodgers. Maris passes the Babe with an asterisk.

Inning 9 1970 to 1994. Curt Flood looses his war against baseball but the players eventually win. The players union gets stronger. The Reds come to power. The A's win a couple world series. Roberto Clemente's life cut short. Washing looses another team called the Senators.

The film also has some great commentary interspersed through out all of the DVD's. At the end of each DVD is a trivia game based on the decade that the DVD covered.

While the movie is based for the most part on New ork teams this is truly a must for all baseball fans. There is no other collection of materials that covers baseball like this one does in terms of breadth and depth.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not absolutely great.......2007-04-24

I hate to say it, mainly because I don't want to come off as racist, but this documentary spends a little too much time on the Negro Leagues. For a league no longer in existence, I think Burns could have spent as much time as he did on the other forgotten leagues. By the middle innings you are left wondering if this is a documentary about the Negro Leagues or about Baseball. He spends less time on the All American Girls Baseball League then it actually existed. This was America's first attempt at creating a women's professional sports league and it is treated in passing. In the end you find that seven of the innings are about professional baseball, specifically the Majors. One of the innings, not all together but in pieces across other innings, is devoted entirely to the Negro Leagues. And one inning, again not together but in pieces, is devoted to all the other leagues that came about (including the Federal League, the American Association, and the All American Girls Baseball League).

5 out of 5 stars The best time capsule covering any sport history on video.......2007-03-14

This series takes you from the beginning of Baseball to the 1990s. Most of it is covered by decade with the 9th inning covering the 1970s up to 1995 (about the time when the series aired on PBS).

Has rare photos and film covering every event of the sport. Has extensive footage of the Negro League, Babe Ruth, and covers every star in the sport at their times. Has some mention of times about the minor league teams as well.

I'm surprised being from Seattle and recalling what Baseball politics turned into this town around the 70s that the Pilots moving from Seattle to Milwaukee (to become the Brewers) wasn't covered as well as the legal battle to get the Mariners into the Kingdome. Was this dropped on purpose? That was an unusual move to do since a lot of the other legal wrangling with the owners, players, courts, the government, and the players union wasn't missed. Perhaps maybe it was dropped due to space on the last DVD.

It's definately a piece of video history to have.

4 out of 5 stars One of Ken Burns' Best.......2007-02-11

I truly enjoyed this series and I like to watch it every year before the season starts.

I think a lot of people miss the point about Ken Burns. This man realizes that race is the issue that stands at the heart of America's soul... it is the issue the shapes so much of our lives in ways we may not even realize. I understand if many may not want to hear this perspective, but if you shake Ken Burns, race is what comes out. In my studies of American history, it is the issue that comes up again and again.

I do wish there are some things he could have done differently with "Baseball." Some of his pictures did not match with their respective narratives. Civil War historian Shelby Foote seemed really out of place in this series but he had great stories and besides... why can't he be a baseball fan? And as a native of DC, I wish he could have included more on the Washington Senators' story- a film clip of "Damn Yankees," and the story of how the Senators were bought by Bob Short in 1968 and the story of their final game on September 30, 1971, which ended as a forfeit because fans stormed the field in protest. I would have loved to have seen something on the '83 World Series with the Orioles. But I think Burns did a pretty decent job with the material he had. Every story could not be told and he did a great job covering the important ones. Perhaps my favorite moment of this series is where writer Gerald Early talks about when he played the game as a kid and he and his friends did everything they saw done in the professional game, and on their own, they would sing the National Anthem. What a heartwarming story!

I'm really glad for the work of Ken Burns and his understanding of the issues that get to the heart of our society.

PS- Ken Burns sometimes uses the wrong pic or video clip with a given subject. But even with that, I still do mot umderstand why, during Episode 8, "A Whole New Ballgame: 1960-69," during the Roger Maris segment, he showed Maris hitting a home run and the next thing you see is a homer going into THE WRIGLEY FIELD BLEACHERS! And the video looks obviously modern, just toned to black and white to look like old footage from the summer of '61. Is that all he could come up with?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book for the avid baseball fan!.......2007-09-26

This book is great for the avid baseball fan. I bought it for myself, but I am going to buy one for a friend for Christmas because I am so impressed with it. I like the baseball diamond shape, makes it interesting, great coffee table book and it a great conversation piece. Even the NON-baseball fans love it! Great information on the new and old ballparks.

3 out of 5 stars Take Me Out to the Ballgame.......2007-01-03

I was disappointed to discover that this was an older edition and not the new one, which I have purchased for others. It lacks the updates of the currebt edition. I suppose its one way to get rid of old merchandise.

4 out of 5 stars baseball parks.......2006-12-19

Take me out to the ballpark by Josh Leventhal is a very exciting book because it shows you baseball's old stadiums. For instance, the Brooklyn Dodgers Stadium. The book shows you how many stadiums there are. I used to think there were only 30 stadiums, but this book gives information on more than 100 major and minor league stadiums around the country.
The book shows some very unique stadiums. Some have roofs, some do not and some are football stadiums like Minnesota's stadium. My favorite part of the book is when they show you the old Yankee Stadium. I think a baseball fan should read this book.

I first purchased this for my baseball-fan grown sons. My mother (also a fan) was enthralled by it, so I bought one for her, too. It has lots of information, great photos - all-in-all, a successful gift for the baseball-lover.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2004-12-10

This book on baseball parks was incredibly good. I personally am very interested in baseball parks and so I have high expectations for a book like this. The information was given in an easy-to-read way that made reading it enjoyable and not a chore. There were lots of facts and the pictures were perfect. The only problem was the shape... I don't get it is it a baseball or what? Other than that this is one of the best baseball books there is and I should know because I love baseball.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate book on the history of the Houston Colt .45's/Astros.......2005-11-02

Anyone who enjoys reading about the history of baseball will love this book whether one is a Houston fan or not. It is a history book and a human interest story all rolled into one.

One get's the feeling after reading this book a feeling of a little sorrow of not having the opportunity to have known some of the unusual personalities depicted in the book, especially pitcher Dick "Turk" Farrell whom obviously was an under rated but solid major league pitcher and a man of a thousand pratical jokes.

The power struggles between the men who helped bring major league baseball to Houston is a story that is almost too intriguing to be true yet is a story that is factual in every detail.

To the fan of the Houston Astros baseball franchise, this is the ultimate book on the history of the origin of the team.

Author Robert Reed definitely did his homework on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Times In Houston.......2004-08-08

I grew up and still reside in the Bayou City. I was born in 1967, two years after the Colt .45's moved from Colt Stadium into the Astrodome and changed their name to the Astros.

Even as a young child I remember having an almost mystical interest in the Colt .45's. It was a marvel to me that they could actually play basball outside in the summers in Houston. I clearly remember my little leauge days in Houston thinking about the heat and humidity and the glare of the sun.

There was never an abundance of information on the Colt .45's or pictures of the old stadium unless you heard it about it from older Houstonians or former players that still called Houston home. This book is truly the Bible of Houston baseball. It is comparitive to the Old Testament's GENISIS. I swear if you curl up on a lazy afternoon and let your mind flow with the book you will feel as though you have travelled back into yester-year and you are there at Colt Stadium, mosquitos, humidity and all.

Sadly baseball in Houston now is a joke. The Astros are the epitome of over-paid, grossly under achieving, lazy athletes. I grew up with the Dome and I would have glady gone to Colt Stadium to root on a near last place team. AT LEAST THEY TRIED AND MADE AN EFFORT. The new ballpark downtown I have nicknamed "The Coffin". With it's retractable roof "The Coffin" is either opened or closed depending on what day you drive by. Most every player inside the place is alrady dead or just going through the motions.

This book celebrates the effort, the entertainment and the energy that once exsisted in Astros history but no longer does. This is the written account of the genisis of major leauge baseball in Houston. It also includes INCREDIBLE photographs in color and black and white.

This book is NOT to be missed ! Read it !

    5 out of 5 stars A real winner.......2002-01-08

An excellent and detailed history of the Colts and their origins in the planned Continental League, the National League expansion of 1961-62, and their colorful early days until they became the Astros. Lots of great photos of players, now-defunct ballparks, and memorabilia, and the real inside story of the name changes from Colts to Colt .45s to Astros. A winner all around.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and well done.......2000-09-01

I stumbled on this book at a bookstore in upstate NY, a far cry from the Houston area. As a baseball fan, it caught my eye although I had very little knowledge of Houston's MLB origins. What sold me-- at least during that quick perusal in the bookstore -- was its treatment of how Houston and NY both came into the league at the same time. After reading it, though, I'm astounded at the history and story of baseball's first major-league team in the south. The no-hitters, the futility, the tear-jerker about Jim Umbricht .... this story reeks of everything that baseball is -- good things, such as colorful characters, true fans, baseball as a game first and business second, and tragedy as well -- the real "Love of the Game" story, not that Kevin Costner tripe. Whether you know anything about Houston, the Colt 45s, or Texas, do yourself a favor and read this book. Heck, it's a human story, not just a sports story. The younger fan may not "get it," but those of us who grew up with those hot summer nights listening to baseball on transistor radios -- no matter were you lived of what team you claimed -- will enjoy the trip back.

5 out of 5 stars When Baseball Came to Houston.......2000-05-22

Texas coastal heat, tropical humidity and giant mosquitoes; those are my memories of Colt Stadium. But I also remember the excitement of going to a real major league game in Houston. This book brings back all those memories and tells things I never knew about the screwball cast of characters who made up the team and the giant personalities who labored to bring big league baseball to Houston. The Colt .45s included major talent such as Joe Morgan, Rusty Staub, Jim Wynn and Larry Dierker. But they also had "colorful" players such as Richard "Turk" Farrell. A must for any collector of Texana, baseball or Houston history.

    Book Description

Although the American Association lasted only a decade, from 1882 to 1891, it rewrote the playbook on baseball, establishing many of the conventions we still honor. Writer David Nemec and photographer Mark Rucker have put together a book that vividly tells the Association's story, and sets a new standard for books on baseball in the 19th century.
In 1882, baseball was controlled by the owners of the six teams in the National League. In keeping with the morals of the day, Sunday games were forbidden, liquor wasn't sold at parks, and admission was kept high to keep out the "common element." Baseball was a gentleman's game.
Then came the American Association, the "Beer and Whisky League." Baseball would never be the same.
True to its nickname, the league ushered in the most freewheeling years of baseball, challenging the National League's hold on the nation's pastime, cutting admission in half, playing Sundays, selling liquor in its ballparks, and fielding exceptional players.
This is the first comprehensive look at the American Association. Meticulously researched, this lively history is complemented by over 200 rare photographs, most never before published. For the many fans of baseball, THE BEER AND WHISKY LEAGUE will be as essential as a well-oiled mitt.

    5 out of 5 stars A question.......2003-06-28

Anyone out there know if this book is scheduled to be updated or reissued? Some of the stats are no longer current or consistent with what's in other reference books and I'd sure appreciate it if they were. Otherwise this book is blue ribbon all the way even if I wish it gave more on Va.'s only major league team ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Beauty in Every Way.......1999-12-26

The baseball element in this book is only part of its charm. The author, with help from the publisher, has also assembled an aesthetic treat for the reader. As the cover suggests, the book is an artful prose and pictorial rendering of an early epoch in our National Pastime. A must I would think for every even mildly serious collector--and that is how I'd describe myself. I'm very glad to have found it and added it to my shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Great photos and stories.......1999-11-01

I just discovered this book. In 1995 when it first appeared it was probably state of the art, but now some of the stats need to be updated because they don't match what's in the new edition of Total Baseball, etc. Otherwise this book is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive work on baseball in the 1880s and early '90s.......1999-08-08

The slew of rarely seen photos alone make this book a treasure. The captions accompanying the photos are so dense with insights and new information that they are really invaluable sidebars. The author's prose and story-telling ability is a full two or three cuts above that of most baseball historians, even the very top ones. Put all that together and it makes you just wish the American Association had lasted 20 years instead of ten so this book would have had to be "double the pleasure, double the fun."

4 out of 5 stars Nemec and Rucker bring a long dead baseball league to life.......1998-07-23

Many a baseball fan, frustrated by conniving team owners and spoiled multimillionaire players, must have wished that someone would start a new baseball league. In 1882, someone did--and the resulting American Association provided stiff competition for the then dominant National League for the following ten years.

The League, to be sure, quickly coopted the Association in some ways. The two circuits agreed to honor each others' player contracts--including the "reserve clause" which bound players to their teams even after their contracts expired--and the league champions met in a postseason playoff which foreshadowed the Twentieth Century World Series. The leagues competed for fans, however, with entirely salutary results--lower admission prices, Sunday baseball, and better umpiring and administration.

Most A.A. players have receded into the mists of time. The only player in "The Beer and Whisky League" whom most readers will recognize will be ! Charlie Comiskey, the player-manager of the St. Louis Browns who subsequently founded the Chicago White Sox. Nemec and Rucker, however, do an outstanding job of bringing the lost players to life and involving the reader in long forgotten pennant races and controversies. Any fan with an interest in baseball history can enjoy this book.

"The Beer and Whisky League" features a large number of photographs accompanied by captions illuminating interesting anecdotes about A.A. players and teams. The pictures, however, are not well integrated with the text.

The brief presence of African American players in the American Association--sixty years before Jackie Robinson--is bound to intrigue contemporary readers. Nemec and Rucker, perhaps hindered by a lack of documentary evidence, unfortunately devote only a couple of paragraphs to this aspect of Association history.

In 1890, the National League--but not the Association--attempted to impose a salary cap on its players! , who rebelled and formed yet a third major league. The th! ree leagues drove each other toward bankruptcy. The resulting financial squeeze led the League and the Association to raid each others' players and franchises, and the better heeled National League eventually prevailed. Four American Association teams defected to the National League in 1892. The Association itself folded and faded into obscurity, from which Nemec and Rucker have rescued it in this enjoyable book.

All the old ballparks, color "postcards" from the cities, all the players, umpires, managers, uniforms, writers, broadcasters and even the nameplates from the local newspapers in each major league city. If you grew up with a transistor radio under the bedcovers listening to Bob Prince or Red Barber, Okkonen's books are better (and cheaper!) than a Jackie Robinson baseball card. A unique combination of nostalgia and factual information that is guaranteed to awaken memories dormant for years. His volumes on the thirties and "oughts" are similarly unique and wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compendium or giftbook especially for thoughtful football fans.......2007-01-06

Edited by Sports Illustrated magazine's executive editor Rob Fleder, and with an introduction by popular football writer Peter King, Sports Illustrated: Great Football Writing compiles classic stories about football and football players from the pages of the venerable magazine, from the modern day to the 1950's. From "The Nightmare of Steroids" to "Where Have You Gone, Joe Namath?" to "All the Way with O.J." - an article about Simpson's stellar football performance from long before his arrest and trial for murder - the articles cover the both the highlights and the low points of America's long love affair with football. An excellent compendium or giftbook especially for thoughtful football fans, who enjoy pondering at length how the sport and its telling has gradually evolved with the decades.

      5 out of 5 stars A Hall-of-Fame Colection.......2006-09-27

There once was a time - it seems like a century ago - when SI really meant something in chronicling sports. But the magazine has sunk over the years to lazily give readers too many book excerpts and not enough good reporting. Is a lead article bashing A-Rod, that includes quotes by cowards who don't want to be named, really good journalism?

This outstanding collection of essays over the many years of the publication shows how sports writing can be equal parts art and history. In the first 50 or so pages, a reader learns about the first sports agent in the game, how a NFL franchise owner parlayed purchasing a team for a buck into stock worth almost $2 million, how the draw-play was invented, the grand history and sordid collapse of the Southwest Conference and the mystique of Lambeau Field.

The writers are a venerable who's who in American letters; David Halberstam, Jack Kerouac and George Plimpton. The sleeper in the bunch is Myron Cope, who was an outstanding sports writer before becoming the Super Fan-character on Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcasts. Though not included in the collection, Cope's SI interview of Howard Cosell was the best feature I ever read on the man who "Told It Like It Is" well before Monday Night Football.

Great Football Writing is essential reading for people who enjoy the great mechanics of being told a story. And though the writers make the craft seem as easy as drawing up a last-second bomb to win the street-game, it takes a champion to professionally cover a champion. The collection is a classic.
