    4 out of 5 stars masterpiece.......2007-09-13

Ernie, is an enlightened flyfisher and writer. The narrative is beautiful so are the colour plates of nymphs in the centerpages.
I was a bit disappointed in the lack of photography.
Lots of dressings throughout the book which could do with a photo of the pattern.
I regard this book as a must have althgough I feel it could be well embellished by addition of colour photography.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad it is out of print..........2001-02-03

This is an excellent book that combines so many different elements. Schwiebert has enough biology information that this was the reference for a long time; but it is really his famous literary skills that make this book. I guess it would date me but I can remember the first Schwiebert story I read in an ancient Flyfisherman magazine - you could always tell them because people spoke in italics, not quotes!

The book is chock full of stories and suggestions; in particular you can read Schwiebert's ideas on the ideal fly rod, fishing during a big stonefly hatch and the art of matching the hatch for nymphs.

The colour plates are gorgeous and the paper was very high quality - my copy still looks brand new. If you see a copy I highly recommend buying it.

Everything on Eastern and Midwestern mayfly hatches, from the most outstanding photographs of every stage to descriptions and common and Latin names and pattern information, is included in this comprehensive book. Each chapter shows and describes the mayfly's stages of development from nymph through spinner and lists patterns and photos of imitations that match each stage. Two photographic essays show in fascinating detail an emerging Blue Quill dun and a molting Yellow Drake dun. A breadth of information that includes a natural history of mayflies is matched with Ted Fauceglia's phenomenal photography. The book covers all of the major Eastern and Midwestern mayfly hatches and serves as an outstanding, detailed, full-color photographic reference for the fly fisher and fly tier.

I purchased this book by Ted Fauceglia with the anticipation that his fine works were fully exemplified in this publication.
This book is an exceptional sample of Ted's work and I am immeasurably impressed by it. For the fly fisherman and fly tier this is a "must have" book, if not only to admire the beautiful insect images. The value in this book is not only the excellent images, but equqally the insect descriptions and distribution, along with the great fly patterns.
Don't hesitate to buy it, it is great value and a work of art.

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular photography.......2006-10-04

This is a perfect gift for a maniacal fly fisherman, the kind of guy that checks out the spiderwebs by the side of the creek to see what bugs have been hatching. The photographs of the various mayflies in different stages of their life cycles are absolutely, jaw-dropping spectacular. The accompanying text is mercifully light on the Latin taxonomy, but contains just the right amount of natural history. As a plus, some examples of flies imitating nymphs, duns and spinners are included at the end of each chapter, along with material info. Of course, they're well photographed, too. A few tips about fishing the hatches and spinner falls are tossed in as well. OK, so if you know what I'm talking about, you want this book. One caveat - the author lives in PA, so it's mostly about Eastern mayflies.

The twentieth-anniversary edition of Hatches II celebrates the enduring value of this complete guide to fishing the hatches of North American trout streams. Chosen by Trout Unlimited as one of the most important fly-fishing books of the past thrity-five years, Hatches II remains the most complete book on the subject of mayflies and their identification. Hundreds of photographs depict the genera and species of the mayfly in all stages of its development, and the authors provide critical information on mayfly biology, tactics, presentation, and imitation. In fact, the Comparadun style of tying, with variations, remains one of the most important innovations of our time.
Special features of Hatches II include Quick Reference Charts for the East/Midwest and western United States hatches; discussions of the mayfly-trout relationship; stream and lab research; photomacrography; tying instructions; emergence calendars; identification charts; and a valuable phonetic table.

    5 out of 5 stars Hatches II.......2006-07-21

A beautiful reference book with great info for the fly fisherman. This book could serve as a college entomology reference, so complete is its information. It belongs in the collection of every fly fisherman. The book starts with an introduction to the Mayfly, which gives the neophyte a very detailed overview of the insects and their life cycles. From there, the book moves on to the general hatches for North America, covered in very useful chart form. These charts give times, sizes, imitation guides with names of flies to use. The book moves on to more detailed infomation about the various mayflies, including their characteristics and how to tie the flies that imitate them. The latter part of the book contains a lot of specific info about mayfly imitation and tying which will be helpful in all aspects of fly fishing.

I think if you could have but one book about insects important to fly fishing, this would be the one. It eliminates the guesswork and is simply a great book that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Hatches II is an Excellent read as well as Reference book.......2002-05-13

Outstanding work on the Mayfly - the life cycle, location of specific hatches (and importance in the region), and even recommendations for flies to be used. There is a section of color photographs of nymphs, duns, and spinners of almost every species covered (noted if male or female) and tying instructions for some of the recommended flies. Bottom line, for the money, this is an excellent book you'll be thoroughly happy with. When you've read it though once you'll have a much better understanding of the subject and almost feel like a pro.

    Book Description

Shane Stalcup is a tier who approaches fly-tying with the heart and mind of both a scientist and an artist. For the first time, Shane has unveiled what many in the West consider a secret weapon--his systematic approach to imitating the mayfly. From the nymph to the spinner, every aspect of the mayfly's life cycle is explored. Shane's realistic and proven flies have been developed over 20-plus years of intense research at the vise, aquarium, and stream. With unwavering passion, Shane's flies have been designed from the fish's point of view, which is why his flies are so highly effective. Besides sharing--through step-by-step photos--all that he carries in his vest, Shane goes a step further by providing in-depth chapters on creating trailing shucks and extended bodies. The photos in this book are dazzling, but the insect photos of Japan's famous photographer Toshi Karita are presented for the first time--and they will blow you away! Mayflies: Top to Bottom also goes into detail on uses for some of today's newest materials that bring alive the triggering traits in his mayfly patterns. Whether you are a novice tier or have lots of experience, Shane's common-sense approach to fly-tying will benefit all

5 out of 5 stars All your modern mayfly needs are met here!.......2003-03-23

I've had this book for a few weeks now and every time I open it up, I'm blown away again by the entire package. This is one of the most interesting fly tying books I've ever read! The photography is sharp and the instructions are crystal clear.

The book starts off with the normal section on material and tool selection that you'll find in any fly tying book. This book is set apart from the rest because there are high quality photos of various materials organized into color charts for assorted dubbings and other body materials. While Shane Stalcup has invented many of these materials and therefore has an interest in their success, the idea behind each is clearly explained and suggestions are made for use.

The rest of the book is divided into sections for nymphs, dries, spinners, emergers and cripples and each section has plenty of ideas which you've more than likely never seen before. Crystal clear photographs and simple but effective text accompany each fly in the book and color variations which will work on your local hatches are presented for each fly.

I was a big fan of Shane Stalcup's tying before looking over this book, but now that I've seen it, I'm on a new level of appreciation! Aside from that, I've got a lot of new ideas I can apply to patterns I'm developing. To make it short, I consider this book essential because its the most interesting and imaginative pattern book I've ever seen!

5 out of 5 stars How to tie an effective, lifelike mayfly lure.......2003-02-14

In Mayflies: Top To Bottom, Shane Stalcup draws upon his more than twenty years of commercial expertise in tying flies for anglers around the world to show trout fishermen how to tie an effective, lifelike mayfly lure that will prove irresistible to their favorite game fish. Full-color photography superbly illustrates each expert innovative fly tying technique and project. An informed and informative discussion of fly tying materials and practices make Mayflies: Top To Bottom (also available in a Spiral Hardbound edition: 157188243X, $...) an indispensable and enthusiastically recommended addition to any dedicated angler's reference shelf.

Any fly-fisher worth his or her waders knows that, like most things in life, successful angling often stems from simple observation; if you pay attention to what's around you--plants, animals, weather, and especially insects--you'll catch more fish and have a better time doing it. This big book on such a very narrowly defined subject is all about providing the angler with a vast amount of information on a single order of insect: Ephemeroptera, the mayflies. Who will benefit from Mayflies? In the authors' own words, it is "written for the novice and expert fly fishers who wish to understand the fundamentals of mayfly entomology and how to effectively fish mayfly species inhabiting the trout waters of North America." To this end, there are chapters on the mayfly's life cycle (with in-depth discussions of each phase, from nymph to emerger to dun to spinner), detailed sections on many common species, and instructions for the fly tier. Drawings, photos, charts, graphs, and an attractive layout enhance the considerable descriptive and scientific text. In all, this is an exhaustive study that should provide serious anglers with useful and fascinating information for those difficult hours spent off the water.

This book, as noted by another reviewer, is first cousin in spirit to LaFontaine's classic Caddisflies. The material is well researched and takes the reader through the science, ultimately tying this information in with how to productively fish mayfly patterns. Having this volume on your shelf along with Caddisflies is a great start to building a serious angler's scientific library.

This book by Malcolm Knopp and Robert Cormier is destined to be a fishing classic. The pair has provided research and usable information on maylfy identification, insect behavior during their life stages, imitative patterns and fishing technique pointers.

I have modified my fishing techniques to match the behaviours noted in the book.

I have also found it very useful in making flies that work on hard fished eastern waters.

Richard Wilbur, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for his New and Collected Poems, has occasionally been pilloried for the twin sins of being too immaculate and too optimistic a poet. (Randall Jarrell, for example, noted that he "obsessively sees, and shows, the bright underside of every dark thing.") But surely these are peccadilloes when measured against Wilbur's formal mastery and unsentimental pathos. Both qualities are on display in Mayflies, which collects his work of the 1990s. Not surprisingly, there are more than a few gestures toward mortality, starting with the title poem's evocation of "those lifelong dancers of a day":
In somber forest, when the sun was low,
I saw from unseen pools a mist of flies
    In their quadrillions rise
And animate a ragged patch of glow
    With sudden glittering...
There is, perhaps, an extra quotient of Frost-like gloom to some of the work here. And indeed, "A Wall in the Woods: Cummington" seems like a deliberate updating of Frost's Yankee pastoralism, although Wilbur imparts an elegance all his own: "What is it for, now that dividing neither / Farm from farm nor field from field, it runs / Through deep impartial woods, and is trangressed / By boughs of pine or beech from either side?" Here and there Wilbur runs out of steam, or bogs down in his own gentility. But he's an appropriately flinty mouthpiece for Dante in "Canto XXV of the Inferno," which originally appeared in a 1998 round-robin translation, and poems like "For C." or "Icons" or "Fabrications" show him at the top of his game. Formalism could hardly find a more accomplished figure for its standard-bearer, and like the spider web that Wilbur celebrates in the latter poem, Mayflies handily demonstrates "the bright resilience of the frailest form." --James Marcus

    Book Description

In 1989 Richard Wilbur published New and Collected Poems, a landmark volume that won that year's Pulitzer Prize. Now, ten years later, he has prepared a collection of all the poetry he has written in the intervening years, together with new translations of Molière (from Amphitryon) and Dante. These twenty-five poems reaffirm Wilbur's stature as one of our greatest living masters of verse.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Slim volume that packs a lot of good poetry.......2003-07-30

Richard Wilbur is the acknowledged living master of formal verse. That means he works in good old-fashioned meter and rhyme. His fans will not be disappointed by this volume, except for its slimness.

If you don't have it already, I recommend his Pulitzer-winning NEW AND COLLECTED POEMS, of which this volume is really just a continuation. MAYFLIES has a healthy dose of translations, including an entire canto of Dante's INFERNO (strange) and scene of Moliere's AMPHITRYON (hilarious!). If there is an over-riding theme, it is of changes and transformations, mostly metaphorical, rather than the Ovidian physical sort.

Wilbur continues harvesting Robert Frost's crops, with several poems about nature and even one about a country wall. The nature poems are mixed with epigrams and lyrics lest you forget that Wilbur can do it all.

My one objection is that this collection really is slim, just 75 pages, much of which is translation. Those on a budget should hold out for a paperback edition, or get the NEW AND COLLECTED.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2002-03-09

Mayflies served as a reminder to me of the power of poetry...language at its most intense.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the poetic interlude in your life.......2001-06-27

It would do us all good to occasionally take some time out to read poetry. Words, with their subtle and differing meanings in combination are the backbone of civilization and in the hands of a master can generate so many different emotions. This collection, not all of which are by Richard Wilbur, are shining examples of the craft and art of poetry. Each moved me in different ways every time I read them, demonstrating the he is indeed worthy of his Pulitzer Prize. I highly recommend it for your poetic interludes.

5 out of 5 stars a gift not lessened over many decades.......2001-03-21

Richard Wilbur, our best living poet of the formal (and yes, often rhyming!) mode, is still writing wonderfully complex, insightful poems. He can be compared to March King John Philip Sousa, who also embraced a formal genre which other composers may have found stultifying. It is evidence of the time-defying talents of both men that their later work is as fresh and engaging as the efforts of their youth, and as unlimited by the highly structured forms they both chose. People hearing a Sousa march today are as taken with its infectious high spirits as those who heard it a hundred years ago. I believe that Wilbur's poems will prove as moving and as enduring. The best poem is the title work, "Mayflies." As a Lay Carmelite I especially savor the lines, "...called to be/ Not fly or star/ But one whose task is joyfully to see/ How fair the fiats of the caller are." Read this life-enhancing poem, and draw nearer to the Caller who created stars and mayflies, and poets too!

    2 out of 5 stars Au contraire.......2001-02-06

This book is 77 pp., half its pages are blank, and it lists for $22. The quality of its poems is uneven; one, "The Gambler," is banal. I'm disappointed in my favorite poet and more so in his publisher.

The author's objective is simplification of the mayfly fauna found in North American trout waters, enabling the fly fisherman to be prepared with the the appropriate imitation required for success; Catching trout on the artifical fly!

Arbona, makes his readers aware of the merits of being able to distinguish between the various species of may flies.

In this volume, the author has chosen to deal exclusive with may flies, and he deals with them in depth. Among all of America's aquatic insects, may flies are by far the most important to trout, and to the trout fly fishing angler.

This book is a highly practical tool which will help the reader to make the distinction between the various may fly Orders; a complete treatise for the serious fly fisherman, on identifying, imitating and fishing the may fly hatches of North America

The book published in 1980 was destined to become a classic. Dispite, being difficult to find Its premis and ideas are as fresh and valid today as it was when it rolled off the press!

I initially bought two copies of this book, one to put to hard use, the other to be saved for the day when I would have the opportunity to meet Fred Arbona and have my books autographed.

Fly fishermen as they pass through the different stages of their advocation tend to be vociferous readers and book collectors. This is a book for that serious fly fisherman and collector!

This book has earned a honoured placed on my bookshelf along with books by Ernest Schweibert; Swisher and Richards; and Caucci and Nastassi.

Keep a tight hold on this book. Be careful of whom you loan it. Loaned books of this caliber tend to walk!

Not to be confused with the "Babylon 5" actor, Joshua Cox is a writer of the Hemingway self-excommunicated variety, a Euro-wanderer whose prose is a cross between Russian lit and Rolling Stone fiction.
Others who have read this book have commented that it's a page-turner; that's because it has the key element for the success of a new writer--it is written from the heart. Along the lines of Christopher Reeves' movie "Somewhere In Time," this book has that same romantic tone, but it is a Mackinaw Island love story told from the perspective of the Douglas Coupland Generation, or perhaps an Eggers Generation that is emerging post-2000. This new generation of writers is a Phoenix from the ashes of the historical Romanticism from the Beats to Gen X and it's becoming a hodgepodge of underground indy literature, e-published books on Barnes-and-Noble banned Xlibris Press, small houses like Empyreal Press out of Montreal, and McSweeney-style Americanized reestablishing of the OuLiPo avant garde. The benefit is a broader range of books, more choices, more voices. Incredible first novels like Patrick Borden's "The Space" and Joshua Cox's "Mayflies in July" are thankfully available to the public, even if conglomerate megastore booksellers don't greet them with open arms.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel for two main reasons: 1) it had the heart of a true indy movie and 2) it gives a voyeuristic revealment of love in the unguarded style of Cameron Crowe. Cox, along with up-and-comers like Borden, JT LeRoy, Peter Henry, Jett McAlister, Matt Deming, and Kirk P. Hansen are a new quiet wave of writers that Internet surfers should welcome.

Invaluable to the fly fisherman, its simple keys take you directly to the mayfly nymph or adult which you are seeking to classify. It is, of course, selective, concentrating largely on insects which are of interest to fly fishermen. Contains color photographsand is pocket size. I carry it in my tackle box and use it frequently. My son, a wild life biologist, used it in some of his entomology courses and pronounced it tops. Five stars. I write this review only because books this good should never go out of print.
