The book is awesome. Beautiful pictures. Very well explained. DVD is very good, even funny. Pay attention to what they say more than what they look like. Glad to have this !
Nymph-Fishing Rivers and Streams.......2007-04-04
The book is well written and extremely informative. The CD is informative, but hokie. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone that is interested in learning to fish with nymphs. It is also worthwhile for those who are interested in improving their nymph fishing techniques.

Nymph-Fishing Rivers And Streams: A Biologist's View of Taking Trout Below the Surface.......2007-02-19
Great book for a beginner nymph fisherman. Enjoy the large color pictures and illustrations. Rick tends to get bogged down with the specifics of aquatic insect entomology. I guess that's to be expected by an author that has a Masters in aquatic entomology. I wish the book would of had more information, pictures, and illustrations on what different patterns are used to imitate the aquatic insect trout regularly feed upon.
Nice review of various nymphing techniques.......2007-01-14
Good photos and nice explanations of "how to" fish with nymphs using different nymphing techniques. Tackle suggestions are a nice touch. While the book is somewhat basic, the DVD is a real hoot to watch--some corny humor (that I appreciate) and some great demos of how to fish the nymphs.

masterpiece.......2007-09-13
Ernie, is an enlightened flyfisher and writer. The narrative is beautiful so are the colour plates of nymphs in the centerpages.
I was a bit disappointed in the lack of photography.
Lots of dressings throughout the book which could do with a photo of the pattern.
I regard this book as a must have althgough I feel it could be well embellished by addition of colour photography.

Too bad it is out of print..........2001-02-03
This is an excellent book that combines so many different elements. Schwiebert has enough biology information that this was the reference for a long time; but it is really his famous literary skills that make this book. I guess it would date me but I can remember the first Schwiebert story I read in an ancient Flyfisherman magazine - you could always tell them because people spoke in italics, not quotes!
The book is chock full of stories and suggestions; in particular you can read Schwiebert's ideas on the ideal fly rod, fishing during a big stonefly hatch and the art of matching the hatch for nymphs.
The colour plates are gorgeous and the paper was very high quality - my copy still looks brand new. If you see a copy I highly recommend buying it.

All Flyfishers should have this book.......2007-07-21
One of the most useful books a flyfisherperson can have. Outstanding information and advice on tying flies that will be useful and how, when and why to fish them. Covers softhackles, flymphs, nymphs and winged wets. Simply a great read even if you do not intend to fish many wet flies. Highly recommended.
Great reading.......2007-05-12
Hughes writing style will keep you reading til the wee hours, and his information is spot-on!
wet flies.......2007-05-10
As alway Dave's book are loaded with info, buy it and start increasing your catch rate.I did!!
A brave new old world.......2006-01-30
I have only recently starting flyfishing and am in process of learning with dries. Picked up this book in an effort to understand one more aspect of this wonderful sport. Dave Hughes has done an outstanding job whetting my appetite for fishing with soft-hackles, winged and wingless wets (flymphs, I love that word!) and fuzzy nymphs. The respect he has for those who opened his eyes to this area of the sport comes through in the elegant and simple manner in which he explains the material. This is clear, practical, and a whole lot of fun. Terrific!
Excellent reference.......2002-12-15
Hughes' writing is clear and concise. His distillation of work by earlier writers on the subject is lively. It appears to me that he is generous in acknowledging the innovations and achievements of others including his own contemporaries.
But this is more than a well-researched history by a modern practitioner. Hughes' own contribution is the convincing and clear demonstration of some tying techniques that I now use in my basic repertoire. The colour plates are clear and well organized, and the advice, as usual, is worth taking seriously.
Book Description
No other form of fly fishing has broader application on so many types of water for both active and inactive trout. So argues Osthoff, who challenges the long-held notion that nymphing involves little more than dead drifting with the current. Osthoff advocates an active strategy of moving the nymph, applying effective casting and creative presentation techniques that will attract the most elusive trout. With comprehensive advice on rigging and prospecting, practice tips for a wide variety of casts, and strategies for precise control to bring your nymph to life, this is your guide to becoming a truly versatile angler.

Thinking Outside the Box.......2007-09-11
Excellent book. Rich thinks outside the box and describes alternative nymphing techniques besides dead-drifting. The book also contains a wealth of practical information like how to put on split shots and how to simply build leaders

Nice but few innovative ideas.......2007-03-23
Nice reading when not possible going fishing but I expected more from the title. It is all about nymph fishing with split shots and floater not considering other nymphing techniques.
Few innovative ideas and often wandering....
From the same author much better buy "No hatch to match"
Active Nymphing.......2007-02-23
Outstanding book for those interested in advanced nymphing techniques; for the kind of fisherman who mostly nymphs and is interested in all phases of emergence and freshwater environments.
Innovative nymphing explained.......2006-08-06
I enjoyed Osthoffs comprehensive treatment of agressive nymphing in this book. Osthoff deals with every aspect of his technique from tying to rigging to casting and presentation to fighting and landing fish. The overall organization of the book was fine, but at times it progressed counterintuitively. In any case I got really excited about trying out some the techniques. I think the most valuable idea here is the concept of prospecting - strategizing and moving (yourself as well as the nymph) to maximize opportunities to trigger aggression in fish. Osthoff does an excellent job in explaining his ideas and the illustrations are very effective. If you are like me and spend most of your time dead drifting nymphs and want to expand your repertoire into active nymphing this is a great book at a great price.
Best and most complete book on nymphing.......2006-05-23
Rich Osthoff grew up fishing the driftless area of southwest Wisconsin. He spent many years backbacking the alpine lakes and streams of the Rocky Mountain backcountry. He is as consumate a fly fisherman as there is writing today. In this book Osthoff gives the most relavant and complete account of nymphing as a true sport that I've read. He relates how to rig a fly line for the various strategies an angler can employ. He advises on how much weight to use in a given situation, how to apply weight, how to position weight, remove weight, which leaders, tippet, indicators, line tapers, rods and reels to use. All this in the first chapter. In subsequent chapters Rich edifies on casting, moving the nymph, downstream strategies, upstream strategies and other practical applications. Osthoff also argues the long standing confict over whether nymphing should be considered true fly fishing. I regard "Active Nymphing" as the best and most complete book on nymphing to date.
Product Description
Trout often prefer underwater aquatic insects because they're more vulnerable than surface stages and are more abundant as well. Fly-fishers know the importance of imitating the specific life stage that trout are feeding on, however most current flies only imitate size, shape, and color of the natural insect. Soft-hackled nymphs also imitate movement and behavior. Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs explains how to imitate sub-surface aquatic insects using both traditional and modern soft-hackled nymphs and flymphs along with the most effective presentation techniques. By exploring effective thread and translucent fur body material combinations, as well as game-bird hackle collars, these flies take on life-like properties. These patterns can be fished throughout the water column from the stream bottom--to imitate immature nymphal forms--to the surface mimicking transitional emergers. Drawing on both traditional and evolved patterns and methods, these wingless wet flies will take you beyond for mulaic fishing techniques to unlimited presentation possibilities and will help you catch more trout.

A welcome and specialized addition to fly fishing instructional reference collections.......2007-07-09
A preferred food source by trout, underwater aquatic insects make an effective lure for those who know how to create them. Typical lures are in the form of the size, shape, and color of the natural insect. but soft-hackled nymphs also imitate the insect's movement and behavior -- thereby enhancing their ability to lure a trout to attack. In "Tying & Fishing soft-Hackled Nymphs", fly fishing expert Allen McGee clearly and methodically explains how to imitate sub-surface aquatic insects using both traditional and modern soft-hackled nymphs along with their most effective presentation techniques. When combining thread and translucent fur body material, these flies take on truly life-like properties that, when fished throughout the water column from the stream bottom, imitate immature nymphal forms. The result is a more successful fly fishing experience and catching more trout! A welcome and specialized addition to fly fishing instructional reference collections, "Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs" is especially recommended reading for novice anglers and will prove to be an invaluable instructional reference for every the more experienced fly fisherman.

Practical Exercise.......2006-03-07
I bought the book in mid-February and read it over a three day period. There was a wealth of useful information particularly describing correct depth, presentation, rigging configurations and other tactics. The following weekend I went out with the expressed intent to use the author's techniques and was very successful, catching 8 rainbows, cutbows and a couple of fat browns. Maybe a good day anyway but was armed with some very good pointers.

A very good book.......2006-03-03
This is one of those books I really enjoyed reading because of the wealth of information contained. Nymphing is not something very many people do, so it makes sense to have a look. In doing so, and applying some of the "know how" I caught 5 rainbows this weekend.. I usually fish in lakes so I was curious what he would have to say about this subject as relates to lakes, and believe it or not there was useful information. There is also advice on choosing the right fly line for a given situation. I never knew that in lakes a 1-2 ips sinking line was the ideal until I read it here. He also explains why this is so very well. There is a section on choosing which fly that tells you why - this was a first for me. (hint: its not just that it looks like food) All in all a short read with lots of information. I highly recommend it. (And no, I'm not related to the guy!) - Migs
inspires the reluctant........2005-04-01
This book gave me confidence to go nymphing. It contains the kind of practical wisdom, echoed in many different situations, that comes from a good instructor and that I found lacking in the 3 or 4 other books I tried. The only thing better would be to get a guide with a similar belief in and passion for nymphing.
Everything you need to know.......2002-05-16
This book contains everything you need to know about nymphing. The author has been on the water for years and has an observant and analytical mind, and he can write clearly. This won't just teach you how to fish with nymphs, but why and when the strategies work. I've read a lot of books on nymphing; this little book is no. 1 on my list.

The Art of Tying the Nymph.......2006-11-06
Very god, clear, and concise book. A must for any Fly Tying library
Very good, better than most.......2001-12-20
Excellent book, easy to understand, lots of detail, everthing made very clear. Some might say there are too few patterns in book, I disagree. The patterns that are included work and will form the base to tie any other nymph pattern out there. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars, many of the patterns are of Mr. Morris's own design(though they do work). So if traditional patterns are what you are looking for thas may not be it. Just guessing about 75% are traditional, 25% Morris patterns. A very small gripe in my opinion.
Interesting, but needs more patterns........1999-06-26
I really enjoyed his step by step illustrations but found the number of fly patterns lacking in his book.
Book Description
Noted photographer and author, Jim Schollmeyer, now puts his talents to tying nymphs. More than just a book of nymph patterns, this book takes a different approach. Realizing that many nymph patterns have evolved from variations on a handful of basic designs and tying techniques, Jim has written on these evolutions and how your repertoire of flies can be broadened by seeing how a variety of modifications can be worked into fly designs to produce the desired appearance or behavior.
With his crisp step-by-step photos and concise text, Jim Schollmeyer has done it again, another great fly-tying technique book.
