Book Description
Man oWar is the extraordinary story of the legendary racehorse and the people near him whose lives he changed forever. Born in 1917, Man o War grew from a rebellious youngster into perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time. His lone defeat, suffered a few weeks before gamblers fixed the 1919 World Series, spawned lasting rumors that he, too, had been victim of a fix. Tackling old beliefs with newly uncovered evidence, Man oWar explores a colorful sports struggle for integrity through the career of one of its brightest stars. The heroics of Man o War, tribulations of his archrival Sir Barton (Americas first Triple Crown winner), and temptations of their Hall of Fame jockeys and trainers weave a compelling tale of grace, disgrace, and elusive redemption. Dramatic and authentic, Man oWar illuminates the mystique of this legendary horse.

Disappointing.......2007-10-17
I suspect many folks considering this book are like me: really loved Seabiscuit, looking for more like it. This book had some glowing reviews on its cover (including one from Laura Hillenbrand) and mostly favorable reviews here, so I was optimistic. But I found the book very disappointing. The quality of the writing is second-rate. Her knowledge of the subject seems fine, but I wasn't looking for facts, I was looking for an engaging story. I wish I'd read the first 10 or 20 pages before buying it.
Impressive Work.......2007-08-24
Dorothy Ours weaves a rich tapestry based on thorough research and fine writing. I couldn't put this book down. It was a weekend well spent.
Excellent Book: Truly Great Horse, Truly Interesting Time.......2007-07-21
I love horse racing so starting reading this book out of that interest. I found, however, that the subject matter necessarily went well beyond what is arguably the greatest race horse. Big Red's influence transcended sports and wove itself into the fabric of American Society. There is a good reason Man o' War's name is immediately recognized by the general public almost 100 years removed. Ms. Ours, in an extremely well-researched, well-written and extremely entertaining work, provides us with a legend and his times. If you have an interest in racing, don't miss this. If you have an interest in early 1900 America and like a good story, well told, Man o' War is worth your money and time.
The Best!!!!.......2007-07-11
I loved this book it had indepth info on MAN O' WAR that I did not know about. After reading this book you will know doubt agree that he is THE HORSE OF THE CENTURY! Wow!
Man of War: A Legend Like Lightening.......2007-06-14
The writing was well done. The story was interesting and gave a glimpse into the time when American racing was developing into a more organized and sophisticated sport. Also, Man of War, was a horse we all remember, even though we didn't live in his era. A great history of racing about the greatest racehorse that ever lived. I would highly recommend
the book.

A horse lovers dream!.......2006-06-10
This book was EXCELLENT!! I love it!
The excitement of the book kept me reading!! Even thought there was fictional parts in the book, like how Man O' War's Dam was not gentle and sweet but nervous and A LOT like her Sire. And other fictional things like how the new owner did not see Man O' War until after he bought him. Even though these things were false in the story, I think it is great and helps people learn the life of one of the greatest horses in history!! When I read the book I felt like I was there, And I love when books help you do that! I really hope they can mke more books like this on othr famous horses!
In My Opinion, one of Walter Farley's Best !!.......2005-11-10
I was able to enjoy this book immensely! The details Walter Farley gave were incredible. You didn't miss a thing! You always knew everything that was going on with Man O' War. There wasn't too much detail either. It wasn't 350 pages of blah. In this book you were able to live through all of the races, dissapointment, and momentous occasions of Man O' War and his stable hand Danny. Danny was a loyal young man who more than anything wanted to be with his horse Man O' War. Any horse lover who has a special horse close to their heart or just loves horses in general will be able to relate to Danny's love for Man O' War!
I definitely recommend Man O' War as a must read for any horse lover!
I hope this was of some help for you! Happy Reading!!
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS THAT WALTER FARLEY HAS EVER WRITTEN.......2005-10-10
It is really goood
the beginning is a little slow but then it grips you and you can hardly put the book down!
it is one of the best books that he has ever written!
If you love horses, or horse racing then this is the book for you!!
A great book; not completely factual but wonderful to read.......2005-03-09
I adore this book, though it is not completely factual. Of course, Walter Farley never says it was:) It is extremely well written and I strongly recommend it to everyone who enjoys Walter Farley's books, horse racing, Man O'War, or just plain horses!
However, there are a few little facts that are incorrect. In the book it is mentioned that Mahubah, Man O'War's dam, is a gentle, good-natured mare that they bred to "tame the hot blood of Hastings". But in real life, Mahubah was noted to be a nervous, rather high-strung mare, much like her father Rock Sand. Rock Sand was very alert and nervous and had to literally have a padded stall because he would pace and kick so much they worried he would injure himself!
Second, Mr. Riddle did not see Man O'War until after he was purchased. He had an agent buy him at the Saratoga Sale.
Also, I think Walter Farley should have given some credit to Preston M. Burch and his book "Training Thoroughbred Horses" because Man O'War's entire training process was copied step-by-step from that book (which I also own).
Overall though, a great book and one of my favorites by the author. Very much recommended and enjoyed!
Awsome historical fiction.......2004-11-26
This is one of my favorite books ever. I read it a few years ago (in 8th grade), and am still looking for another racehorse book like it. Farley throws you into the story of a colt and his groom. Although in real life, Danny didn't exist, "Red" did and the information on the horse and his races is true. It gives all of the history without getting boring and sounding like a History book. I think everyone who even just likes horses should read it.
Book Description
“There’s no margin for mistakes in submarines. You’re either alive or dead.”
–Richard O’Kane
Hailed as the ace of aces, captain Richard O’Kane, winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his consummate skill and heroism as a submarine skipper, sank more enemy ships and saved more downed fliers than anyone else.
Now Pulitzer Prize—winning author William Tuohy captures all the danger, the terror, and the pulse-pounding action of undersea combat as he chronicles O’Kane’s wartime career–from his valiant service as executive officer under Wahoo skipper Dudley “Mush” Morton to his electrifying patrols as commander of the USS Tang and his incredible escape, with eight other survivors, after Tang was sunk by its own defective torpedo.
Above all, The Bravest Man is the dramatic story of mavericks who broke the rules and set the pace to become a new breed of hunter/killer submariners who waged a unique brand of warfare. These undersea warriors would blaze their own path to victory–and transform the “Silent Service” into the deadliest fighting force in the Pacific.
Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining and insightful.......2007-02-13
I read this book as part of a History Day project I am doing on Dick O'Kane and the USS Tang. This book was extremely helpful. It tells the story of the Tang in a very thorough and easy to understand way. It's almost like you're there in the control room with the officers. Another great thing about this book is that it also gives you a good feel for the entire submarine force of WW2 by breifly telling many other stories about the best, worst, and most bizzare things that were happening, and explaining problems submariners had to face. All in all, if you want to get a great basic knowledge of WW2 Submarines, and read a gripping story about real heros and real drama, this book is for you.
Book Description
Acclaimed as the greatest racehorse of all time, and more than half a century after his death his legend continues to grow. Mentioned with the same reverence as Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and Red Grange. Winner of twenty races in twenty-one starts. His sons and daughters continue to influence the Thoroughbred breed today.

Good Book.......2007-07-11
This was a good book. But if you want to read a better one on Man O' War then read MAN O' WAR - A LEGEND LIKE LIGHTNING has a lot more info and facts.
Great.......2006-04-30
I really enjoyed this book. It not only told the story of Man O War but also the people that made him a legend. Man O War was voted number one on the Blood Horse top 100 horses of the 20 century. This book is a must read!
Volume 1 of the Eclipse Press's Thoroughbred Legends.......2005-05-19
Edward L. Bowen is an Eclipse Award-winning Turf writer, formerly editor-in-chief of "The Blood-Horse" magazine, and currently president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. I believe his most recently published book is "Nashua," which is volume eight of the `Thoroughbred Legends' series.
In "Man o'War", Bowen ambles gently through the races, sales histories, and breeding record of 20th century America's greatest Thoroughbred. There are also black-and-white photographs and a chart of all of Big Red's races, where he was first twenty out of twenty-one times.
Of course, the race that Man o'War lost gets the most print. As Bowen puts it, "Few events in sports have been recalled as often as the 1919 Sanford Memorial." Consensus finally blamed the loss on the jockey, John Loftus although a fictional account I read of Man o'War's life had the two-year-old chestnut stumbling to his knees at the start of the Sanford. Bowen has tracked down another theory in the newspapers of the day: Man o'War was sideways at the start and when the barrier was sprung, he had to play catch-up for the rest of the six furlong race.
Upset beat Big Red. We Man o'War fans have to accept that. However, the big chestnut stallion by Fair Play out of Mahubah was still voted the best American race horse of the century by the "Blood-Horse" magazine, and again in another poll conducted by the Associated Press.
I don't think Upset left much of a record behind at stud, although the breeding shed was another arena where Man o'War excelled. Bowen spends some print defending Samuel Riddle's rather eccentric breeding theories. By today's standards Man o'War was not bred very often or to the cream of the mare crop, but his few progeny did exceedingly well. His son War Admiral "was a major link in guaranteeing the ongoing influence of Big Red insofar as successful producing daughters." His son War Relic sired only fourteen stakes winners, but several of his progeny kept the Man o'War sire line alive into the 21st century, mainly through In Reality, and later through the 1990 Kentucky Derby winner, Unbridled.
Bowen is an unhurried, knowledgeable writer and although this book isn't as exciting as some that come later in the series, his retelling of the legend of "The Mostest Hoss" is still worth reading.
GOOD, BUT COULD OF BEEN BETTER........2004-09-19
I REALLY ENJOYED THE BOOK, IT IS WORTH BUYING, BUT IT IS NOT AS GOOD AS THE BOOK MAN O' WAR BY PAGE COOPER AND ROGER TREAT.
WHICH IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.
Out of the mouths of babes...........2002-12-29
I am adult age and fully agree with the 11 year old reviewer; this book was a huge disapointment! There is too little detail about the horse and no real feeling involved. Man O'War was an all-time marvel; is it too much to ask for some of that story? Was this a designated project with historical reasearch or time limited? I had planned to purchase the entire series, this is the end of that idea.
Customer Reviews:
This book is so great!!!!!.......2005-03-11
This is the best horse book I have ever read! The author has amazing insight and talent.

Book Description
Captain James Cook was a master voyager and a seeker of knowledge who commanded three demanding scientific expeditions. He and his crews had encounters with peoples of the South Seas which led to mutual respect and trade, but also to misunderstanding and violence. His death at the hands of Hawaiians turned him into a legendary figure, a hero of the Enlightenment who was said to have sacrificed his life bringing "civilization" to the Pacific.
Yet despite everything that is known about this sea captain's many adventures, the man himself remains shrouded in mystery. In this book, Dan O'Sullivan casts vivid light on Cook's character, teasing out his personality from the pages of his own journals.
Book Description
Man O' War, or "Big Red" as he was affectionately called, was the greatest racehorse that ever lived. In 1919 and 1920, he won 20 of 21 starts and set eight records, including three world records, while conceding as much as 30 pounds to his rivals and still beating them by large margins. His time in the Belmont Stakes stood for an incredible 50 years. Man O' War's last contest, and greatest achievement, was a match race against Sir Barton, the first Triple Crown winner, where he vanquished the Canadian horse by seven lengths. He was sire to War Admiral, Crusader, and Battleship, and was grandsire to Seabiscuit, who perhaps most of all inherited the indomitable spirit and great heart of the champion.
With his distinctive blazing white star on his forehead and deep red coat, Man O' War was a major star in the first half of the twentieth century, and his popularity is credited with reviving the scandal-ridden sport of horseracing. Bought for $5,000 by Pennsylvania horseman Samuel Riddle, Man O' War ended up winning more money than any horse up to that time. He lost only once, in a controversial race, and was so good that his odds of losing races reached an astronomical 100-1, even though he was heavily handicapped with more weight than any of his challengers. Rather than jeopardize the health of his horse under such enormous weights, Riddle retired him at the age of three. Man O' War lived for 27 more years and sired 379 foals, 61 of which were stakes winners. He became a legend in his lifetime, retired to Kentucky, cared for by his groom, Will Harbut, and visited by millions.
In Man O' War, the classic biography by Page Cooper and Roger L. Treat, Big Red emerges as an unforgettable animal full of personality, good looks, and blazing speed. It is a dramatic story, as in race after race, other stables try to beat the magnificent horse with the tremendous stride and determine just how fast he can really run. Page and Cooper present Man O' War vividly and authentically, as he was seen by those who trained and loved him, and whose hearts rode with him as he raced to victory.

Review by a Horse Lover.......2007-02-21
I absolutely loved this book! I had read Walter Farley's novel about Man o' War, and enjoyed that book too even though it was written for children. This book is historical fact, but is not at all dry. It is completely about the horse, not the jockey, not the owners (except where and when necessary for clarity, or how they influenced the horse). The authors made Man o' War truly come alive on the pages, and told us about his lineage without losing me. When I read in the Introduction "He was always a horse you referred to as 'who' instead of 'which'" I knew I was in the right book, and was going to love it. It did not let me down; the authors never for a minute consider Man o' War a 'which'--he is always 'who.' Royalty! This book is history made interesting. My parents were born about the time Man o' War was born, and my mother was raised in Saratoga Springs, NY where Mr. Riddle bought Man o' War. I am the owner of a great-great-great granddaughter of Man o' War, great-great granddaughter of War Admiral, Winspiration, and her foal, Dark Stormy Night. These facts explain my special affinity for this book, but those with no such connections, I believe, would still enjoy this book. All my horses are "who," never "which." This is a great book for horse lovers, especially thoroughbred horse lovers.
What a find!.......2006-02-21
I grew up reading this book....I was the only one who checked it out of our local library for about 10 years, and I checked it out more than once. So being able to buy it finally was a real treat. Very engaging book that puts you inside the Man o'War story like no other.
Until a better one come along.......2006-02-18
I agree with the last reviewer...the book lacked life. Big Red had a big heart, a big career, and a big life. This book was informative but there was little life to it. Man O 'War deserves more. Maybe Laura Hillenbrand has another horse book in her. I hope so.
Informative, but dull presentation.......2006-01-30
Perhaps I am a little biased. As a Black Stallion series fan, I have read Walter Farley's account of Man O'War and thought it was fantastic. It was well written, fast paced and informative. However, I figured there were some things missing, or not exact, and like many I've always been intrigued by Big Red, so I tried to find another book about the mostest horse. Cooper and Treat's book came highly recommended so I figured "Why not?"
I was not that impressed. The addition of Man o War's heritage and sons and daughters was interesting. And knowing the odds for all the races (the actual tickets are in the book, too) was neat. But I though the book was very slow paced, and very dry. I understand that there was not as much characterization in terms of the people...after all, this was a book about a horse. But Man O' War never really came alive in the pages of this book. At least, not like he did in Farley's.
All in all, if it wasn't for the heritage and other extras, I would say to skip this book. There weren't many pictures (let alone good ones) and it was rather dull. You would be better off with Farley's novelization.
THE best book on Man O'War. PERIOD!.......2006-01-16
OMG...I just now found out about this REPRINT! I am SO EXCITED. I have read this book many times when our library actually had TWO copies in circulation. Of course, like most of the really great horse books in our library system, both copies were 'lost' by someone who checked 'em out (riiiiiight). Dang, I HATE that...arrrggh.
Anyway, I've come across used copies for sale but they're always so freaking expensive - I could never bring myself to spend all that MONEY. So it's a GREAT thrill to see this wonderful book - which has everything you could possibly want in a book about that great, legendary horse - at around $10 or so here on Amazon! Yay!
Like Walter Farley's "faction" version of the great horse's life, the authors used the unpublished manuscript "Turf Career of Man O'War" a good deal but the book also includes a COMPLETE list of his progeny, auction prices, race records, mares bred to, etc. AND every single one of the Daily Racing Form official charts for his 21 races. Amazing, and great reading. Of course something to keep in mind was when the book came out in 1951, there were still a lot of folks alive who remembered seeing "Big Red" in person, and the horse himself had just died four years before, a lot of key people were still alive and so on. This book is like a rich slice of chocolate cake, immensely delicious and satisfying!
If you haven't figured it out by now, I recommend this book :)
