i have only flipped through this book so im not going to say much about whats in it.
i just wanted to say that my book came with the spiral binding....maybe some of them do not?? it seems that way, according to one other guy ....

this title came up so darn often ,no matter where i was reading,,or the website,,,when it came to "LOFTING they always came back to this book. from some of the referrals i read,,,i trust them,,and eventually give this a read.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-02-14

I always wanted to know what lofting is all about. Well, now I know. The book is very interesting and explanatory. Although I found some illustrations confusing, I think that it covers the subject in a significant depth. Recomended. I even think of lofting my next boat.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best on this subject.......2001-10-22

Lofting -- the process of transferring the information on paper plan to the real thing, is the one of most confusing and intimidating aspects of boatbuilding. This book sets out to explain it in some detail. Unfortunately the the author gets sidetracked by details and in trying to include all aspects of lofting glosses over some of the fundamentals. It was helpful to me since I had learned the basics from other books, but if you want to learn lofting with no prior knowledge this is not the book for you. There was no discussion of planking and spiling (what I was looking for). The illustrations are helpful, but there could be more. It is not spiral bound as described -- it is a conventially bound paperback which doesn't like to stay open.

4 out of 5 stars Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A book designed for young kids, in general.

A doctor discovers how to talk to his animals, thanks to his rather intelligent parrot. This leads him to giving away the boring old mundane practice of human medicine and going to work on something that is a lot more suited to his pretty unique talents.

He ends up in Africa, along with some other adventures.

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive and Shallow "Politically Correct" Version.......2007-02-03

I am a huge fan of the original Hugh Lofting Dr. Dolittle and not this shallow abridged version. A good part of the story is cut and the history is mutilated. The illustrations are obviously not complete Hugh Loftings even though they still bear his name. Many of his illustrations have been cut and pasted blending them with some weird Victorian style prints. The result is a jumbled mishmash. As a kid, I'm offended that they would take a wonderful piece of literature and trample it with political correctness jargon. There are things said in the original version that I understand would not be appropriate today. But it was a part or our history. And it gives a great opportunity for discussions with parents. As for this story, what is left? The character depth is ruined. The vocabulary is rudimentary. Utter trash. Don't waste your time. Original unabridged or nothing.

5 out of 5 stars Good book with simple sentences.......2006-09-04

Doctor Dolittle was a human doctor once. But he liked animals very much. Then when his pets grew many, people didn't like them and didn't visit him. But one of his pets taught him animal languages when he had almost no money. Then he decided he became an animal doctor.
This was the beginning of the adventure of Doctor Dolittle.

This book was written with simple words and simple sentences. Then I could read this book faster than usual.
Hugh Lofting wrote this story in the letter to his children for amusing them during World War One. After that this became this book, the first story of Dr. Dolittle. Finaly eight Doctor Dolittle books came out and the second book got the Newbery Medal. He was born in England. And he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT.

At first I had start to read e-Book of this. And the introduction of the book said the illustrations in the book also written by author. Then I decided buying a paperback of this because the e-Book doesn't have pictures.
This is a good book. It's easy to understand as I already said. I strongly recommend reading this book.

Happy Reading!

5 out of 5 stars A Quick Summary.......2006-07-03

The book I am going to do my report on is Doctor Dolittle. It is a book about an animal doctor. He has many pets but loves to get more. One day he went to Africa to heal all the sick monkeys. When he was coming home, he met the Pirates of Barbary. That's all! It was a good book and I recommend you read it.

The Story of Doctor Dolittle

This book is about the life of an ordinary doctor named John Dolittle. He is a doctor for people but later on becomes one for animals. Dr. Dolittle possesses one unusual gift. It is the ability to talk to animals. He helps many different animals. He journeys to Africa to treat a sickness that is killing many monkeys. There he has many adventures.
I really liked this book because it is all make believe and adventure. I really like adventure books. They are very exciting to read. They never let you get bored reading them. It is also funny in some parts of the story too. This makes you not want to stop.
I also like the characters. They come to life in this book. They also become a part of you when you are reading. My favorite character was Jip the dog. He was a main character and sometimes he is really funny. I also like Polynesia the parrot because she helps the doctor many times in the book.
My favorite part is when the Barbary pirates are stuck on the old sinking ship. That part is really funny and exciting to read. Ben Ali the leader wants to kill Dr. Dolittle but doesn't succeed. He and his pirates have to become birdseed farmers on the Canary island. This I like this part because the animals help doctor Dolittle out. They are very nice to him because he is their friend.

Book Description

Doctor John Dolittle, the veterinarian who can actually talk to animals, sets sail on the high seas for new adventures! Accompanied by his young friend Tommy Stubbins and the beloved animals of his household -- Polynesia the parrot, Jip the dog, and Chee-Chee the monkey -- the good doctor is off to forbidding Spider Monkey Island to examine the rare jabizri beetle. But the mysterious island holds another, darker secret: The famous Indian naturalist, Long Arrow, has mysteriously disappeared -- and Doctor Dolittle urgently needs to speak with him.

Doctor Dolittle and his friends brave a shipwreck, find the floating island, and meet the incredible Great Glass Sea Snail -- the keeper of the greatest mystery of all. This is the most popular of the twelve Doctor Dolittle novels. The next has been carefully edited for modern readers by renowned children's book authors Patricia and Fredrick McKissack. This new edition, featuring color illustrations by best-selling artist Michael Hague, is sure to bring a whole new generation under the spell of Doctor Dolittle and his animal friends.

ONE early morning in the Springtime, when I was wandering among the hills at the back of the town, I happened to come upon a hawk with a squirrel in its claws. It was standing on a rock and the squirrel was fighting very hard for its life. The hawk was so frightened when I came upon it suddenly like this, that it dropped the poor creature and flew away. I picked the squirrel up and found that two of its legs were badly hurt. So I carried it in my arms back to the town.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read Aloud.......2007-04-03

This book is a great read aloud for young children. Mine can't get enough. I have found them combing over an atlas a few times after our reading sessions. I also think this would be a great read aloud in the classroom, especially before a writer's workshop.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary update.......2007-02-08

Got this book out of the library, and my young daughter was mesmerized by the extraordinary illustrations, as well as being fascinated by the good doctor, and his ability to speak to his various and highly characterized animal friends.

While it's not the original, I wouldn't have been able to read her the original (not on shelves around the libraries where I live). So, this was a really great way to introduce her.

Since she liked this one so much, she's checked out at least 7 other Dolittle books, so I'm quite grateful to Books of Wonder that they re-did this one and the Story of Dr. Dolittle with the Michael Hague illustrations; they opened a whole world to my daughter, and she can read through a couple of pages at a time herself now that she's 8. Also, we read aloud as the bedtime story, and there's plenty to talk about as far as different time, era, animal behavior, friendship etc. I'd never seen any Hague illustrations before and I was bowled over by them myself. I'm ordering off Amazon as a gift book

As far as the editing/censorship, there's still plenty to talk about in adventures taking place in a different time and place.

3 out of 5 stars Champion of Animal Rights.......2005-08-20

This 1922 childhood classic by Hugh Lofting is related by 10-12 year old Tommy Stubbins, the son of a poor cobbler. Totally swept up in the new science of Natural Studies, Tommy rises from client (with a wounded squirrel) to apprentice, despite his parents' reluctance. From the moment the boy meets Dr. John Doolittle of Puddleby-on-Marsh Tommy's life will never be the same; he will experience the natural and geologic wonders of the world as he accompanies the learned Dr. Doolittle on voyages of exploration.

Respected as an eminent Naturalist this middle-aged bachelor keeps a veritable menagerie in his home and in his private, backyard zoo. Animals truly love this man because of his kindness and compassion, his medical skills, plus his generosity with his time, talents and modest resources. But there is a more compelling reason for his zoological success: this man can actually Talk with most species of the animal kingdom!

Eventually Tommy finds himself onboard a newly-purchased ship called THE CURLEW, as the Doctor embarks on a voyage of discovery and rescue across the Atlantic. Seeking a mysterious, floating isle called Spider Monkey Island, and the vanished Long Arrow--an unappreciated naturalist in his own, Native American world. The pair enlist the aid of Bumpo, an African prince who has studied in England. But it is the Dcotor's devoted animal companions who prove invaluable, on both sides of the ocean: Dab Dab the housekeeper Duck; Jip the dog; Chee Chee, the African chimp; Polynesia, the brains of the outfit; and Miranda, the exotic messenger bird of paradise.

Tommy faithfully records these incredible experiences for generations of children (of all ages) to enjoy: the trial of a man accused of murder in a Mexican mine; a wager about bull fighting on a Spanish island; stowaways and a shipwreck; rescue of trapped Indians; a war and reconstruction--white man style; Indians buried alive; the dilemma of the white man's burden, and a fantastic submarine, trans-Atlantic crossing. Lofting includes a mild satire on British institutions, food habits and climate. Yet he offers a serious sub-theme of the role/effect of White man upon native cultures: is it morally necessary to "Civilize" native cultures? This delightful fantasy is easy to read and this 1950's edition offers curious pen and ink sketches typical of the early 20's-a true Kid Klassic!

Lofting, a novel, is the record of a perceptive and intrepid sensualist, one woman's exploration of the thematic catalogue of fin de siecle eroticism. Rendered in compellingly elaborate detail, its scenes of debauch will delight aficionados of exhibitionism, voyeurism, bisexuality, bondage, flogging and other national pastimes.

3 out of 5 stars Starts with a gasp, ends with a groan (not the good kind, either).......2005-10-23

After reading most of the other reviews here on amazon.com, I couldn't wait to get my mitts on "Lofting." Everyone wrote reviews about how intelligent this book was supposed to be. Well, having been a reader of a lot of kink over the years, I thought that I couldn't possibly be disappointed in what was described as "intelligent fiction." Boy was I wrong.

It started with such promise: a curious woman, Claire, engages in a kinky exchange with a distant friend, Andres, over the internet. They've never met in real life, but there is such chemistry between them...

This story had all the makings of a great adventure in erotic kink, but somewhere along the way, Alma Marceau lost control of her plot, and it turned into a typical, cheesy story about sterotyped BDSM sex. How disappointing.

Instead of following the very erotic, chemistry-laden, and mysterious internet relationship with Andres, Marceau tosses Claire to a new love-interest: a typical Dom-ish character named Nick. Marceau then tries (tries waaaay too hard) to make him dark and mysterious. She fails. He comes across as a cookie-cutter Dom with standard attributes. Yawn.

Throughout the story, Marceau adds in bits of foriegn phrases and references to literature and philosophy, but it comes across as ultra-contrieved: a attempt to be witty about being witty.

The last 30 pages or so was basically a 4-person orgy, with Claire as the whipping post, and it was so poorly written and bland that I almost couldn't make myself finish reading it. If you want to read some good kink, try "The Marketplace" series by Laura Antoniou, the "Two Moons" series by Chelsea Shepard, or the very erotic "Blue: the Color of Desire" by Patrick Linney.

3 out of 5 stars This book shouldn't have gone past the short story phase........2004-10-22

If you have any sort of sexual imagination of your own, I suggest you explore it instead of wasting your money on this second rate stuff. Once you get past the tedious "getting to know you" stage, your treated by some typical bondage, master/slave, submission, pain stuff; an affluent woman being taught the ways of a master. The thing is so contrived, it seemed created by some computer program. The author (whomever he or she really is) throws in some literary references in a feeble attempt to make the character seem like cultural sophisticates (sort of the way the writers of "Frazier" did, but at least the TV show was lots of fun. My advice: if you need to read this book, you probably spend a lot of lonely evenings in bed, so you should get yourself a more creative sex life.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply incredible!.......2003-11-29

Reading a book that is both erotic and literary is always a treat. Alma Marceau's Lofting is one of the most exquisite erotic novels ever written. As fiendishly graphic as it is beautifully philosophical, Lofting chronicles the unraveling of a woman's electrifying sexual desire. She has decided to surrender her body to her master, but little did she anticipate that she'd end up surrendering her heart...

Lofting is full of wonderful imagery and poetic undertones. To describe this novel as erotic is putting it mildly. It is an extraordinary piece of work, beautiful and lyrical. There are some humorous moments as well. Are you in the bargain for literary erotica? I suggest you pick up this incredible book.

5 out of 5 stars Sweaty and Giggling.......2002-11-10

Marceau's "Lofting" gives the reader a vivid tour through a variety of ultra hot sex scenes, while simultaneously offering a French tickler for the funny bone. What style! Marceau's brilliant writing is a feast for all of the senses. Encore!

      5 out of 5 stars A Delicious Experience..........2002-10-25

Lofting left me uncomfortably wet, curious, breathless and panting. I am mystified by Marceau's skill in delivering an intellectual experience while eliciting deep, somatic responses. The effect gave my emotions a rest and allowed me to enjoy a strange, delicious awakening of my senses, and a greater understanding of their boundaries, cravings, and idiosyncracies.

Doctor Dolittle--a 19th-century English physician--has never been one for worrying much. Even after his human patients desert him (when one too many sit on one of the doctor's unusual parlor pets), he manages to convert gracefully to animal medicine. Having mastered animal language along the way (with the help of his caustic yet amusing parrot, Polynesia), he has a good head start in his practice. Then, one cold, dark winter night, as the doctor and his pets sit around the fire, a message arrives, via sparrow, from Africa. A terrible epidemic has broken out among the monkeys, and Doctor Dolittle is the only one who can save them. The beneficent physician checks his money box--not a penny left. But the fate of Africa's ailing apes lays squarely on his shoulders.

And so begins the delightful, whimsical adventures that are still enthralling readers three quarters of a century after their original 1920 publication. Hugh Lofting, winner of the 1923 Newbery Medal for The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle, has more than a knack for storytelling. His ability to imbue in his characters--human and animal--distinct, unique personalities is remarkable, and his respect for the rights of all who share the planet shines throughout. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

        Book Description

When Polynesia, Doctor Dolittle's parrot, teaches him how to speak animal language, it seems a good idea.  But animals come from far and wide until Doctor Dolittle has no more time for his human patients--and no more money.  The animals grow hungry, the house is a mess, and the animals begin to worry.

Until one day, a swallow arrives in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh where the good Doctor lives, with news that the monkeys of Africa are ill--and only the doctor who talks to animals can save them.  Doctor Dolittle, along with such good friends as Jip, his loyal dog, and Dab-Dab, his housekeeper duck, are now faced with great danger and challenges on their journey to Africa to save the monkeys.

This is the story of Doctor Dolittle's adventures and his eventual return home with the miraculous animal who joined the family and provided for them for the rest of their lives.  No child should be without this classic story of a misunderstood doctor who finds great understanding and affection among the animals.  Produced by the world's foremost creators of radio entertainment and brilliantly read by Alan Bennett,  Doctor Dolittle and all his animal friends come magically to life in this charming presentation. Listeners young and old will be enthralled and delighted by The Story of Doctor Dolittle.

        4 out of 5 stars cornwall,NY Sixth Grader.......2007-03-24

I am a sixth grader. If you like fantasy and adventure, then Doctor Dolittle is the book for you. Doctor Dolittle was a people doctor in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh. He was also an animal lover. His house was full of all different types of animals. The more animals he took in, the less people came for his help. Because he liked animals better, he decided to care for animals instead. His parrot, Polynesia, explained how animals have their own language. After spending a lot of time with Polynesia, Doctor Dolittle soon learned the languages of all the different animals.
Chee-Chee the monkey told the doctor about an illness among the monkeys in Africa. Doctor Dolittle said he would go there and care for the monkeys. There was one problem. He had no money to get there. Some of the animals and Doctor Dolittle boarded a boat for the long trip to Africa. It took them six weeks to sail there. The king didn't want them on his land so he put them all in prison. They escape from the prison. They finally find all the sick monkeys. Doctor Dolittle starts tending to them. You have to read the book to find out how this adventure ends.
Another fun part in the book is when he finds an amazing animal. It is like nothing you have ever seen before. I will not tell what is special about it because I don't want to ruin the surprise. He takes this animal around so everyone can enjoy this unusual creature.
Doctor Dolittle does eventually return home. There are many other adventures and surprises in the book. I don't want to ruin the book so you will just have to read it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, fantasy and make believe. I wish I had the ability to talk to animals, don't you? So hurry out and get this book. You will be glad you did!!!!!!!

        5 out of 5 stars great illustrations.......2006-11-13

I select classic children's books. If there are several available, I always select the one with the best illustrations. This had the best illustrations of all the "Doctor Dolittle" books offered by Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated and revised.......2005-07-16

I presume anyone reading the reviews already is familiar with the storyline of Dr. Dolittle. I highly recommend this version with only a slight reservation (see below) because its illustration and editing would make an excellent introduction to children as well as a gift possibility and a lifelong keepsake.

I heartily disagree with the reviewer who discredits this edition because it has been updated to modern civilities. The reviewer mistakenly suggests that the edition conceals that changes have been made. To the contrary, the foreword fully describes the editors' concerns for literary sensitivities as they made changes.

If your purpose is to collect unabridged books, do shop elsewhere. But if you share my intent of introducing this wonderful story to children, this book serves the purpose very well. There is minimal distraction from unnecessary anachronisms.

I think this edition would serve children well through elementary school. I would nominate unabridged editions for older children to help teach them about society's changing attitudes towards racism.

My slight reservation (mentioned above) about this edition is that racial stereotypes do persist. In Africa, the (white) doctor is referred as "the good man" while the African king is unjust, his son is goofy, and both the king and his son are easily fooled. These characterizations ARE unavoidable without drastically changing the storyline. However, the story explains the motivation for the king's injustice and is a worthy point of discussion with a young reader.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2004-11-29

I had this book as a child and since I'm an avid reader, mine is still in excellent condition and is now being read to my child. He absolutely loves this book. It's so well illustrated and very well written. The imagination that it sparks is unbelievable and quite fun. He loves all the animals and watching Dr. Dolittle go to Africa in the boat. It jus sparks so much conversation and imagination. Don't hesitate on this book - it's just wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars THE STORY OF DOCTOR DOOLITTLE.......2004-05-06

I bought this for my son for his eighth birthday, he loves it so much that he is reading it to himself. This is the first book that he has ever carried around with him, actually reading while he is walking around. This was the first chapter book that my older son read. We had barrowed a paperback edition from a friend. I am so glad that I bought this edition, it's a great story, and the illustrations are wonderful! My younger son got a bike, game cube, and game boy games, for his birthday. But, this book is favorite gift... I think that says it all!
