A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description
Tennis Beyond Big Shots presents a bold back-to-the-future approach. A new game that moves away from power and big shots yet is more lethal to opponents than any booming serve. Greg Moran shows players of all ages and abilities that, with simple and small changes, you can not only maximize your tennis wins and play longer, but also have much more fun doing it.
Customer Reviews:
Few gems, mostly routine stuff.......2007-01-18
I was disappointed in the number of really good different tennis tips. There were only a few gems in the whole book. Most of the tennis "tips" were routine.
An Easy Read to Better Tennis.......2006-12-04
I love the game and have read many books on the subject. This one excels at giving tangible advice on everything "just folks" need to play and enjoy the game. Tips from strategy to etiquette are clearly explained, easy to remember, and make a difference. Greg is an advocate of playing percentage tennis (knowing when and where to hit your shot, and the smart uses of power and spin). Having followed his advice, I've seen my game advance and I'm comfortable on the court with all levels of players.
Best tennis book I ever read.......2006-10-06
The tips and strategies in this book had an instant positive result on my last match. I would highly recommend it for any player looking for tangible strategies to take their game to the next level.
Win matches and friends with this perceptive book.......2006-10-05
"Tennis Beyond Big Shots" provides plenty of topnotch instruction about strokes and strategy that will help you win matches. This 224-page paperback, spiced with pithy quotes, also gives readers superb suggestions about how to win friends and enjoy your tennis, regardless of the outcome.
Its "10 Commandments of Social Tennis" chapter should be posted at every tennis club and center. Especially important is author Greg Moran's commandent to accept your mistakes graciously. "No matter how badly you may be playing or losing, keep a positive attitude and your excuses to yourself. No one's interested, and you'll only sound foolish," he advises.
My other favorite chapters are "Two Shots That Deserve Respect," "Conquering Our Inner Devil," "Three Secrets To Defeat Stinky Feet" (about footwork), and "Being The Best Tennis Parent Ever."
Recreational players, teaching pros and coaches, aspiring juniors, and tennis parents will benefit considerably from studying this well-written and well-analyzed book that covers both the basics and the fine points of tennis.

Customer Reviews:
New Edition is Way Better.......2006-01-23
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.
Excellent Book - Helped My Teams.......2004-12-08
I purchased this book as an athletic director. I got this and the other sports books in the series. I received excellent feedback on the tennis book. The coach did not know much about training, but said the book is easy to read and understand. even the exercises he did not know how to do, there were photos and descriptions which made it easy for the players to use it. Definitely worth it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!.......2001-05-30
This book does an excellent job at covering all the aspects of playing and coaching tennis. He divides tennis into 3 parts: the physical, the mental, and the emotional and he covers all three areas well. For example, he writes about your "role" when you play someone: are you the underdog or the favorite (he gives several other roles too)? He explains how to be comfortable with your role and how to excell in your role. He also writes about the different types of player personalities and how to best motivate them as a coach. I thought this book was just great.
Coaching Tennis.......1999-12-25
This is an outstanding book that deals with every aspect of coaching tennis. The book is very easy to read and includes charts, diagrams and photos to supplement the excellent techniques described. A must for any successful tennis coach!
A great guide to techniques, theory and drills for tennis.......1999-01-01
This book is great for the beginner, intermediate or even an advanced coach/player. No matter what level player the reader is, Kriese gives good advice on getting mentally and physically ready for the game. His advice covers stretching and physical training, advice on how to play the game against many types of players, (ex. players with good forehands and weak backhands, players who are fast and come to the net, etc.), drills to prepare for the game, photos of techniques, diagrams on drills...and I could go on. I've been using this book for almost two years to get tips on drills and techniques as a player/coach. It's helped improve my game and the players I teach. I highly recommend it!
Scientifically up-to-date tennis training.......1998-03-27
Contains quite a bit of updated material towards the coaching of tennis. Be most suitable for the high-school coach looking for optimal growth for his teams. It is a necessary reference for the serious tennis teacher or coach who likes to leave no stone unturned to give the best learning to his trainees. Is not misleading but is scientifically correct when it comes to the technical, tactical, physical and mental.
An excellent integration of "how-to", psychology & training........1997-11-20
Chuck Kriese puts together the best of modern tennis in one text. He deftly covers modern stroke techniques, a new system for tennis tactics and excellent motivational advice. A must read for coaches and parents.

Do yourself a favor.......2006-04-05
Buy this book then read it , think about it then reread it. I bought the hardcover 10 months ago. I immediately saw I was heading down the wrong road. I completely "stopped" with my child. I knew I was making some mistakes that needed correcting. this book was a godsend. No matter how serious or casual the goals for you child , this book will make you think and help you develop a more positive long term approach. My daughter and I are still extremely involved, we just enjoy it more. Now she drags me to the tennis court. I reread this book every other month. My thanks to the author. enough said
Beautifully and Simply Written.......2006-03-12
I like the way this book is written. Yes, it's for "kids", but it doesn't read like a child-like book. It speaks to children, coaches and parents in a way that is intelligent, clear and empathetic.
I wish I had read earlier...........2004-09-28
I wish this book was around years ago (I am now an empty nester, my sons are married). My two sons played the junior tennis tournaments, but are now into golf. There is so much useful information and guidance I wish I had access to when my kids were growing up. Kudos to Keith for a book critically important for any tennis parent.
Tennis Kids is a Winner!.......2004-01-19
I loved this book! I have learned more about tennis from a child's point of view than anything else I have read. As a tennis coach for children, this is the best book on the subject and I use the principals for other sports as well. A great and entertaining read!
Enthusiastic Recommendation from a Pro.......2003-11-16
At my junior tournaments, I am offering copies of "Raising Big Smiling Tennis Kids" instead of t-shirts to participants. Great book for parents and pros.

Customer Reviews:
OK, but better elseware.......2007-07-25
I could see that this could be a good book if you were brand new to table tennis and had a coach. Good drills for practicing with similarly leveled players. However, I feel book does not accurately describe how to truely improve your stroke. Descriptions tend to be vague and leave it to the player to experiment to get the result they are looking for. The danger for the player without a coach is that common early bad habits that are effective for begginers will become engrained. Also, the strategy section is not as good as in other TT books.
Excellent Book.......2005-08-04
I found the book to be very helpful and informative. I have just begun playing competitively for the past year and found that the graphics/steps really have helped my game. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is just developing their game. I have bought other table tennis books, but they lacked the graphics this book has, so I am very happy with this purchase.
The Best Table Tennis Book For Beginners-Intermediates.......2004-02-21
This book is one of the best book on table tennis that I have ever read. The clear and concise text makes this book very readable. While you may not turn into a table tennis champion overnight, following the instructions by Mr. Hodges by disciplined practice, a newcomer to the sport can learn the game, but it can also be used as a reference for intermediate players to correct their stroke or to improve it.
This book is useful not only because it explains the different strokes but it also contains sections on physical training and tactics against different style of play.
Table Tennis: Steps to Success is a must-have in any table tennis player's library.
An excellent slient coach!.......2001-04-26
I highly recommend this book as a supplementary material for references as technique guidelines and theory support. In fact, I dont' think anyone can actually learn any sport from any book, however well-written the book may be. Table-tennis is no exception. As is indicated in the book, to learn to play the game, you need to practice. With this book, however, you can correct your weakness, look up for any question you gathered during the practice. The book covers almost all the basic drills in the modern table-tennis game.
The book is divided into chapters. For beginners, I suggest you follow the steps and do the excersies in the end of every chapter. For those who already have some basic knowledge, just check the parts you're confused with. You can easily find your part because the index is very clarified.
This is a book for beginners and intermediate-level players. If you are an advanced player who already developed a mature playing style, I don't think this book will help you. In this case, you should check out other tactic books or tourement vedios.
As to the new 40mm ball games, the new rule doesn't change the basic techniques. Therefore, the book still works. What is changed by the new ball is mostly the equipement and tactics, which is not the main concern of the book.
Steps to Success for Table Tennis by Larry Hodges.......2000-12-09
Steps to Success is an excellent book written by author Larry Hodges. I love the game of table tennis and this is a book for anyone wanting to improve their game from the recreational to the serious player wanting to develop their game. This is a must book for someone desiring to learn table tennis and improve their game!

Customer Reviews:
Very good collection of drills for all situations........2004-06-22
Overall, this is a very good collection of tennis drills. Tina Hoskins covers tennis drills for numerous situations including: singles, doubles, group and children drills, competitive games, and even backboard drills. That is how she reaches the staggering number of 245 tennis drills. Given that most players have specific needs and desire associated with tennis drills, you will probably find only a small percentage of these drills useful. And, that is perfectly OK.
In my case, I am a former varsity college tennis player still hitting at the NTRP 4.5 level with a technical orientation to the game. I actually love challenging singles drills. Within this book, I actually found only 8 drills (3% of total drills) useful. But, these 8 drills include some of the most physically and technically challenging drills I ever came across. The most extreme drill is the one actually portrayed on the cover page. Frankly, if it was not for this book, I did not think this drill was possible. This is because it is composed of shots that are typically outright winners (passing shots down the line, and cross court volleys in the open court). In any case, I tried these 8 drills this past weekend. And, they worked. After an hour and half of intermittently doing these drills, and then just hitting around to catch our breath; We did all these drills, had a lot of fun, were more exhausted than usual, but hit the best we ever hit. I can see how if I keep the work up on these extreme-8s, my game and physical condition will reach the next level.
If you are a tennis coach teaching clinics, there are probably many more drills you will find useful within this book. But even if you are not, you may find the book very useful just like I did. The drills shown in the book, opens your mind and body to what is possible. Out of the drills shown, it is easy to tweak them a bit to your own needs. Thus, tennis drills becomes also a mental game of creativity.
The one drawback of the book is that a slight majority of the drills are explained without drawing. I think the book would have been more effective by concentrating on maybe the best 100 drills and illustrate all of them instead of 245 drills where only a minority of the drills is illustrated. But, overall this is still a valuable book on tennis drills.

Disappointed With the Tennis Ball Machine Drills.......2005-10-04
When I bought this book I was hopeful that the chapter on the Ball Machine drills would help me to use my new ball machine more efficiently. I was disappointed by the fact that the chapter was geared for more than one player and the machine, rather than just one player and the machine. I believe that most of the drills can be revised so that they work with just one player, but it didn't really contain what I was looking for. I didn't feel there was that much value added to when I go out with the machine before reading this book.
Incredible number of great drills.......2004-11-12
While I agree with the other reviewer who said that the drills were tailored to a clinic setting, I have found that many of the drills can easily be adapted to as few as two people. The value in the book is in learning the concepts that each drill is meant to teach. If you need work on a particular part of your game, there is most likely a drill that can help you.
The book explains each drill in text and with a clear diagram of how the drill should be conducted (where players should be positioned, where the balls should be hit). The text portion also gives variations on the drill that can be used depending on the skill level of the players. It gives suggestions on how to make it easier for less advanced players, and suggestions for making it more challenging for more advanced players.
I teach clinics, so it's obviously a good reference for me to keep my clinics fresh, but I also refer to it for my own practice with my mixed doubles partner.
The overall content of the book is excellent, but having read through most of the drills, I've found portions where the editing fell short. There were a couple of drills where the text portion didn't match the diagram, and it looked like the description was for a different drill. But overall, the information in this book is extremely useful. Of all the tennis books I have, this is the one to which I refer the most.
great basic catalog of useful drills.......2000-04-07
This book is a comprehensive, easy-to-read list of drills for all levels. The pictures and clear directions simplify my coaching and serve as an invaluable resource on the fly! Buy this book if you don't have oodles of extra time to read fluffy descriptions and just need creative basic drill ideas to serve as a backbone for your practices.
Many drills for the clinic setting.......1998-10-23
I purchased this book in hopes of finding a tome filled with quality tennis drills for two people or a player and coach. The drills in this book are, however, arranged for more than two people such as one would find in a tennis clinic setting. Nonetheless, the drills seemed fine and there were several for each stroke.
