    Book Description

This brand-new addition to the 50 Hikes series explores Kentucky's extensive, diverse, and often overlooked network of trails. Hikers in Kentucky will find a stunning array of natural rock arches, rushing rivers, spring wildflowers, and even a recently reintroduced herd of elk. Within the 670,000-acre Daniel Boone National Forest lie two wilderness areas, the Red River Gorge Geological Area, and a trail system highlighted by the 269-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. Outside the national forest lie Cumberland Falls, centered around the mighty waterfall and its world famous moonbow, and Natural Bridge, one of the largest natural arches in the eastern US. An overview chart provides at-a-glance information on the 50 hikes, which feature something for hikers of every ability. Each hike is accompanied by a topographical map, information on difficulty, mileage, and rise, as well as information on the geology, wildlife, and ecosystems you'll encounter along the way. 40 black and white photographs, 51 maps, index.

5 out of 5 stars 50-Hikes Series gets another excellent addition.......2003-11-22

If you're a fan of the 50 Hikes Series (like I am), you're going to fall in love this offering. As the title suggests, this book describes 50 hikes in the Bluegrass State, ranging in length from 0.9 to 13.4 miles. The entire state is covered, from Breaks Interstate Park and Big South Fork in the east to Land Between the Lakes and Mammoth Cave in the west. You'll find a hike for every ability and for every interest in here.

Each hike contains driving directions (starting at a nearby town), a map copied from the USGS topo maps, and a well-informed and well-written background on the area. A summary table in the front of the book helps you select a hike of interest quickly.

Most of the "famous" trails in Kentucky are described here, with a few lesser-known options thrown in. Of particular note are two cave "hikes" (i.e. tours) that are described in the Mammoth Cave section, something I'm not sure I've seen in a hiking guide before. These two count toward the 50-hikes total, so there are really 48 "traditional" hikes. Having done a considerable amount of hiking in Kentucky, there were a couple of trails that I was expecting to be included that were not. Perhaps they could have been if not for the cave tours, but Hiram's choice makes the book different and more interesting. This work still contains the "best and brightest" trails in Kentucky.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Hiram's earlier work "Exploring the Black Hills and Badlands," I was expecting big things out of this book. I was not disappointed. I have several guides to Kentucky hiking on my bookshelf, and this one is the best. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about trails or is interested in Kentucky hiking.

    5 out of 5 stars Another Success!.......2002-12-23

Hiram Rogers has done it again! As an avid outdoorsman, Hiram's trail guides have helped me navigate my way through the Black Hills of South Dakota and some equally rewarding trails in Kentucky. Hiram's latest book incorporates wonderful photography and a meticulous description of what one will see and experience. Having read both books before traversing the respective trails, I could almost anticipate what was behind every bend. I look forward to his next release!

    Book Description

With a new epilogue revealing additional information about the Floyd Collins story that has come to light since the book was first published!

The sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt in early 1925 generated America's first true media spectacle, making Floyd Collins's story one of the seminal events of the century.

The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's situation was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word.

TRAPPED! is both a tense adventure and a brilliant historical recreation of the past.

5 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT WILL CONSUME YOU AND A MAN THAT WILL LEAVE A DEEP IMPRESSION ON YOU.......2007-03-25

After my first trip through one of the sections of Mammoth Cave, I was addicted to this world. My husband turned me on to this man, Floyd Collins, who I have never heard of. We both bought a book from the park store and I couldn't pull myself away from this one. As we drove for hours on our vacation, I would read multiple parts to my husband while he was driving. I couldn't fight the tears as I read so many parts of this book to him. I don't normally get consumed by movies or books, but this book and the story of Floyd Collins has left such an impact on me. It is inevitable the you will find yourself feeling trapped along with Floyd and find a warm level of love and respect for him as his days and conversations are described. I can't even begin to describe feeling as though I was right there beside Homer, Skeets and Johnnie with their dedication to saving this man. I wish there was a movie about this - not a documentary, but a movie. The drama, suspense, characters and events of this story are so realistic and R.K. Murray did a great job on this book.

    Definitely a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Trapped: The Story of Floyd Collins.......2002-12-21

When asked about his earliest childhood memory, my late father would tell of his dad carrying him to his uncle's house to listen to radio news reports of the attempted rescue of Floyd Collins from a cave in nearby Kentucky. This book brings to life those events that captured the nation's attention in Jan.-Feb. 1925. Trapped is a well-written, well-documented account of the tragedy that occured in the central Kentucky hills and before watchful eyes of the nation. Its a gripping account that manages to capture the facts of the event, including great details of America's first modern media circus, while still attending to the many colorful characters who played a role in Collin's life, the rescue attempt, and the aftermath.

5 out of 5 stars Trapped: The Story of Floyd Collins.......2002-10-11

The best book I've ever read, period. Within the context of a rescue attempt of a Kentucky caver, the authors paint a revealing picture of America in the 1920's. From the glory seeking Louisville fireman to a journalist who won the nobel prize, this story is not to be missed. Just read the 1st five pages, up to the 1st line break, & you'll be hooked. I've never handed this book to anyone who wasn't totally enthralled w/ it.

4 out of 5 stars Cave Country Tragedy.......2002-07-15

Trapped! the story of Floyd Collins, is a very well written account of one of the first mass media coverages of an American Tragedy. The book itself flows very well and engrosses the reader in the details of the often heroic effort to save Collins who was trapped in a cave near Mammouth Cave in Kentucky. Murray and Brucker do an excellent job in discussing the noted personalities associated with the media frenzy that closely followed the efforts to save Collins. Also dealt with is the exploitation of the entire event by a number of self serving individuals. A great book for those interested in Kentucky History and a noteworthy work for those who prefer casual reading.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, well written account........2001-09-29

O.K.- this genre of book is not my usual reading. However- Since seeing the play (musical) and buying the O.B.C. C.D, I had to know more. This fast paced book is highly readable, and contains wonderful but chilling insights into the farce that passed as a rescue attempt as well as many sidelights into the people and events of this tragedy. What had me literally on chair's edge was the author's move by move of his personal trip into the very cave that was to be Collins' first grave. A real nail biter! Buy this book, buy the C.D., and please see the show- you too will be hooked! Good stuff!!

5 out of 5 stars VALUABLE resource for my trip to Big South Fork!!!!!.......2006-01-17

Mr. Manning provides a lot of background info on the geology, biology and history of this area of Tennessee & Kentucky - info that greatly enhances the visit! While I'm one to use guidebooks, I always ask for more current info from the Park staff when visiting a new Park. He gave very practical advise regarding hiking & biking in the Park - as well as info on paddling the river!! He did give an overview of the trails - but, in his "100 Trails of the Big South Fork" he strongly suggests that one always check with local Rangers for trail conditions in the Park. So, enjoy your trip!!!

Also, there's a review of this book that blasts Mr. Manning for not mentioning the snow storm and its effects. I don't think she understands the publishing process. Books go to press only every few years - and the updated draft is sent in many months before they are actually printed. It's impossible for a guidebook to be current at any particular time.

1 out of 5 stars Manning's book will get you in trouble! Far from Updated !.......2001-06-27

The 2000 Edition of this book is certainly NOT UPDATED. The cover claims: "A thoroughly updated, comprehensive guide to the Big South Fork..." This is misleading. One wonders who reviewed this edition and why the information is so misleading and why changes due to a huge 1998 snow storm are not discussed or reflected in the trail maps and descriptions. I would like my money returned!

Since Manning's First Edition in 1994, the Big South Fork area suffered a 100-year snow storm which devastated the forest knocking millions of trees down, closing hundreds of miles of trail. This storm occurred in February 1998. I have recently tried to follow two separate horse trails in Manning's book and found one barely passable - had to dismount my horse and very carefully squeeze under fallen trees not once, but several times. The other trail described simply does not exist due to trees downed. The directions for this trail are so poor that once you have traveled several miles into the gorge, there is no way you could find the route described in the book even if it did exist. The acknowledgements in the new addition indicate the same people reviewed this edition's content as did in 1994. Several of these people have been gone from Big South Fork since 1996,'97, and 98.

One gets the impression that a new cover has been put on the 1994 edition and a few sentences changed. The book advises visitors to check with a ranger on trail conditions, but totally omits any discussion of the effects of this huge storm event on the environment, and does not warn visitors of its possible consequences in planning a trip that depends on trails being open. Also, in Manning's 2000 Edition, trails do not match the trails system shown on the official Trails Illustrated Map by National Geographic for Big South Fork published in 1998. This edition does not benefit the trailrider!

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to Kentucky hiking (updated review).......2001-06-21

Each of the books available on Kentucky hiking possesses a different strength. The strength of this guide has to be the volume of hikes described. From Cumberland Gap on the Virginia state line to the Mississippi River in the west, this guide features over 180 hiking trails in Kentucky. The guide covers all of the major hiking areas (and some not so major areas) in the state.

Each hike contains a trail map, detailed directions to the trailhead, a black-and-white picture, and a brief description of the hike. Hikes range from 1 to 12 miles in length, with the average at around 4-5. This guide is exclusively devoted to day hikes, but longer hikes are referenced in an appendix. The trail maps are hand-drawn, but since I have personally hiked many of the trails in this guide, I can tell you that most of them are rather accurate. However, they still lack details such as elevation changes, so you probably won't want to venture into one of the more remote areas described here without a better map such as a USGS topo map. Also, the authors have not measured some of the distances very carefully, as I have found some of the distances given in this guide to be somewhat over-stated.

In addition to the above, the major drawbacks with this book are the scant amount of information given about each area's geological or cultural history and the lack of detail in the trail descriptions. The author suffices with only 1 paragraph in introducing each hike, and many of the trails receive only 1 or 2 sentences in a description. Also, there is no trail summary at the beginning of the book, so it is not easy to choose a trail to hike.

In summary, if I were to own only one guide describing the "greatest" hikes in Kentucky, this would probably NOT be the one. For that purpose, I would recommend "50 Hikes in Kentucky" by Hiram Rogers (a book I have personally read) instead of this book because of its superior trail descriptions, maps, and ease of use. However, if you are looking for a more comprehensive guide to add to your library, this is a well-written, informative guide that deserves serious consideration.

4 out of 5 stars Complete guide to Kentucky's hiking trails.......2001-06-21

From Cumberland Gap on the Virginia state line to the Mississippi River in the west, this guide features over 180 of the best hiking trails Kentucky has to offer. Each hike contains a trail map, detailed directions to the trailhead, a picture, and a brief description of the hike. Hikes range from 1 to 9 miles in length, covering all of the major hiking areas (and some not so major areas) in the state. Longer hikes are referenced in an appendix. The major drawback is the scant amount of information given about each area's geological or cultural history. Nevertheless, if you are looking for suggested hikes in the bluegrass state (such as I was), this is one of the better resources on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for hiking Kentucky.......2003-05-27

I echo the previous review. This book is very informative, well written, and very comprehensive with discussions on 79 hikes. For anybody interested in the overwhelmingly beautiful and dynamic landscapes of the Commonwealth, follow the suggestions in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Guide to Kentucky Hiking.......2002-01-21

Michael Brown's new book on hiking in Kentucky is a well-written, highly informative addition to the short library of must-have books on the outdoors in Kentucky. He's hiked all the trails described himself, and provides good detail with small maps in the book, and GPS coordinates as well. He's a former reporter for the Courier-Journal, and it shows in the clear, engaging prose.

I field-tested the book this weekend with a hike in the Rockcastle Narrows. The descriptions and directions were fully accurate, and the book described clearly some of the route finding challenges on this particular trail.

      Highly recommended.
