Customer Reviews:
Great book for children young and old.......2007-06-22
I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I've become something of a collector of children's baseball books since my son was born four years ago. I really shouldn't be, and books like "H is for Home Run," are the reasons why.
This book does a nice job of explaining some of the fundamentals of the game to children of all ages. It does a much better job than the DK baseball books that have pictures licensed by MLB that deliver facts and pictures, but not interesting stories.
To me, one of the best parts of the book is the structure. Each letter of the alphabet is given one page that includes an interesting illustration and one short, typically four line poem: "B is for the best--Babe Ruth, the New York Yankee great who batted balls toward bleachers at a then-unheard-of rate." These little ditties roll off your tongue smoothly--perfect for my two-year-old daughter and four-year-old son. They even finish some of the sentences for me.
Each page also includes two to three meaty paragraphs with a bit more substance more suitable for older kids and grown ups. Continuing with the letter "B," the authors share some of the Babe's jaw-dropping stats in the first paragraph, then serve up more detailed info about balls, bats and bases in the second paragraph, "Major leaguers generally prefer bats measuring 33 to 35 inches long. The longest bats allowed are 42 inches in the major leagues and 33 inches in Little League."
The structure actually creates two books in one. A baseball poetry book fit to be read while putting a toddler to bed. And a baseball history book interesting enough for the grownup to read after their child has nodded off to sleep.
Let Baseball Teach The Alphabet!.......2005-06-21
With this book, you not only stroll through the alphabet, you also learn lots about baseball: history, technique, and players. This is a book that uses alliteration to teach the alphabet, baseball style. I am in awe that someone could pull together an A to Z for baseball. The poetry is good, but not nearly as awesome as the illustrations and the baseball history. There is great longevity for this book. Younger readers will enjoy the alliteration, older readers and parents will enjoy the more detailed descriptions of the game provided in sidebars. Aside from having fun learning the alphabet, you can share America's past time with your kids.
The baseball alphabet from A for all-stars to Z for zeroes.......2005-04-06
Writer Brad Herzog and illustrator Melanie Rose, who brought you "K is for Kick: A Soccer Alphabet," now bring you "H is for Home Run: A Baseball Alphabet." This is not a simple alphabet book, by which I mean that they do more than say "A is for the all-stars." The accompanying text points out that A also stands for Abner Doubleday (who had nothing to do with the invention of baseball), Alexander Cartwright (who did), the All-Star game where the all-stars play, and Hank Aaron. Even more impressive is that in the painting for "A" the player shown signing baseballs for the fans is apparently Amos Otis. That is paying attention to details.
As you go from A to Z in this baseball alphabet there are all sorts of details about the game of baseball and the great players who have played it over the years. So look for Babe Ruth, a grand slam clearing the Green Monster, Jackie Robinson, and Wrigley Field. Young readers will also find out about not only opening day and outs, but Sadaharu Oh, along with stickball and T-ball. As for all those "Z" for zeroes, they add up to a perfect game, which is a nice touch as well. There is also a love of alliteration, so that "C is for clutch cleanup hitters who crush a curveball--CRACK!--and tip their caps for curtain calls, the crowd calling them back." So there is a lot covered here in a fairly informal way that will teach young readers about the game.
In the end, "H is for Home Run" is more than a baseball alphabet, since it is not going to be teaching those who read it their A-B-Cs. But in a time when the major topic in baseball is steroids reading this book is rather soothing and can help reassociate the game with its former charm. Herzog has been writing about baseball since he was an honorary batboy for the Chicago White Sox, so that explains his attention to historical and contemporary details throughout this book. Rose also illustrated "M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet" and "Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet," and it will be interesting to see what she comes up for the other 22 alphabet books whose titles will beginning with the remaining letters of the alphabet.
A "Hit" For Young Baseball Fans.......2004-05-01
When I was recently looking for a book for a very young baseball hopeful, I came across H IS FOR HOME RUN. The book is more than an "alphabet book." It not only has an appropriate baseball term or tidbit of baseball for each letter, it also has an informative bit of baseball information. The text is well written and the illustrations are marvelous. It is the perfect book for any young slugger, but I can also see it being helpful for baseball illiterates like me-people who pretends to know something about the sport but are to embarrassed to ask.

Illus. in full color. A shortstop in a tutu? Not if she can help it! Forced by her mother into taking ballet lessons, a die-hard tomboy discovers that there's team spirit at the barre as well as on the baseball diamond.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing stereotypes.......2002-05-14
Are there really still mothers who insist their daughters wear pink and force them to do ballet? I bought this thinking it might celebrate girls who enjoy doing both team sports AND dance (like so many girls I know DO), but this presents it as an either/or choice. It's great to encourage girls to do the team sports, but is it really necessary to tear down the other pursuit? My 6 year-old daughter was very disappointed. Baseball Ballerina Strikes Out is a better choice, though it doesn't really deal with dance, but the conflict is about handling teasing. We won't be re-reading it.
A fun book for girls who like it all!.......2001-06-19
My daughter loves her dance classes, but she also likes to play rough and tough with her four brothers! Baseball Ballerina is a fun story that shows a girl it's okay to enjoy it all! An easy read for bedtime or anytime. We are looking forward to Baseball Ballerina Strikes Out!
Baseball Ballerina.......2000-01-21
I loved this book because that girl loves baseball but her mom doesn't like the baseball. The girl goes to the dance and she picks the crown and everybody applauded.
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR ANY AGE!!!.......1998-07-31
I think this book is fantastic. When I read it the first time, I kept on reading it over, and over. I loved it. It is a great book for beginners and anyone!!! You should read it and see for yourself!!!

Book Description
Essentials for the youngest fans: a baseball, a baseball cap, and DK's Major League Baseball board books. It's no surprise that for millions of American children, "ball" is their first word and a baseball cap is their first headgear. Kids and baseball go hand in hand. There's no better way to introduce America's favorite pastime to little ones than with DK's Major League Baseball Board Books. Kids' natural interest in baseball combines with their curiosity about counting and learning the ABCs in these grand-slam hits for the baby and toddler set. This adorable book uses baseballs, gloves, caps, and some of today's most popular stars to help kids learn to count. From 1 Baseball to 4 Catchers to 9 Pennants, future sluggers and pitchers count numbers with the help of stars like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter, Pedro Martinez, and many others.
Customer Reviews:
A Must for Any Baseball Baby.......2006-12-05
My 19-month old daughter loves this book - she can even identify her "favorite" teams when they appears on the pages. It's a simple and colorful introduction to the extreme basics of baseball (i.e. pitcher, baserunner, bat, ball, glove, etc.), and you can elaborate on the pages by identifying brands (for bat, ball, glove), teams, and players.
It stays true to the material........2006-12-05
Yes, it's about baseball and numbers, but it doesn't try to educate the young reader on VORP calculations or the merits of combining SLG and OBP. Instead, it goes back to basics and relies on the classics: one baseball, two bats, three gloves, four catchers, five baserunners, six mascots, seven hitters, eight pitchers, nine pennants, and ten baseball caps.
Older readers will appreciate the inclusion of Ivan Rodriguez as a Texas Ranger; Pedro Martinez as a Boston Red Sock; and cameos by Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire. It gives a bit of a dated feel by not including future steroid abusers Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi, but seeing Junior Griffey and Randy Johnson more than compensates.
The tension builds slowly but progressively, and culminates in a finale you won't soon forget. I know I won't... or can't.
-Fred

Customer Reviews:
Some neat thoughts about gender..........2002-07-01
This story works with gender identification. The main character is a girl who enjoys playing baseball. Her mother believes that she must balance this activity with a more feminine activity and so enrolls her in ballet. The plot is activated by some nice reversals. The art is full-page, watercolor and pastel. It is colorful and depicts an unstructured world: both figures and architectural elements are melted and out-of-kilter. I think the style has limited appeal. The illustrations miss the opportunity to depict the main character's fantasies in a manner distinct from the portrayal of reality. As such, readers may not fully understand that certain scenes occur only as a projection. While there is some multicultural representation among the humans inhabiting the story, the main characters are clearly Anglo-American.

Customer Reviews:
Remember when Charlies Brown tried to steal home?.......2004-03-09
If you know anything about Charlie Brown as a baseball player then you know that the title of this Ready-to-Read book, "It's a Home Run, Charlie Brown!" has a bit of irony in it. That is because when the cover proclaims that this book is based on the comic strips of Charles M. Schulz it is talking specifically about the ones where the score is tied 3 to 3 in the bottom of the 9th with two outs and the best hitter for the Peanuts gang up to bat. I have never figured out who that particular batter would be, but what matters is that Charlie Brown is on third base and thinking about stealing home. This would involve running really fast towards home, which would be a "home run," but not a home run. Charlie Brown is thinking that if he stole home and won the game for his team, which has never won a game before, that he would be a hero. But one of the other things we know about the wonderful world of "Peanuts" is that Charlie Brown never gets to be a hero.
It is certainly nice to see this classic "Peanuts" story dressed up for a new generation of readers. Old readers will recognize most of what is in here from various comic strips Schulz did decades ago, which will bring just as a much of a smile as you will find on the faces of youngsters reading these stories for the first time. "It's a Home Run, Charlie Brown!" is adapted by Judy Katshke with art by Nick and Peter LoBianco, who have nicely captured the classic look of the Peanuts gang in color. This is a Level 2 Ready-to-Read book, which means youngsters are learning to read independently with stories that are more-complex. Schulz's classic comic strips are ideal for such an endeavor and there are plenty of other "Peanuts" books in the series for kids to turn to next.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LOREN LONG AND TEXAS BLUEBONNET AWARD WINNER PHIL BILDNER CREATE AN ACTION-PACKED PARABLE WHEREIN THREE SIBLINGS EMBARK ON AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME AND DISCOVER THE STRENGTH IN FAMILY, THE POWER OF FAITH, AND THE TRUE MAGIC OF BASEBALL.

Ruby has noticed a change in her big brother. Suddenly he's acting anxious and secretive, and she's determined to find out why.
Graham just wants to hit the field. Deep down inside, he knows that everything would be fine if his brother and sister would let him step up to the plate and swing for the fences.
And then there's the baseball that, when held simultaneously by Griffith, Ruby, and Graham, triggers the miraculous.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-05-22
Here's the beginning of great new series for kids. BARNSTORMERS: THE TALES OF THE TRAVELIN' NINE is written by Phil Bildner and illustrated by Loren Long.
Set in 1899, BARNSTORMERS brings historic baseball to life for readers. The story centers around three siblings, Griffith, Ruby, and Graham. Still recovering from the death of their father, the three children are traveling with the colorful ball team, the Travelin' Nine. Their exhibition games are meant to earn money to pay the debts left behind after the death of their father.
Adding excitement to the story is a mysterious baseball given to the children by their father's brother, Uncle Owen. The baseball has seen better days, but its torn stitching and acorn-sized hole seem to promise miraculous things if the siblings keep it close during these trying times. Could it be the baseball that causes the crazy visions the team sees on the field as they play ball?
Bildner creates a wonderful picture of the past as he takes readers through the team's first game against Cincinnati. With historical baseball terminology explained in the margins, kids of today are treated to a magical glimpse into the history of early baseball. The lyrical text does not talk down to younger readers, but instead challenges them to read and appreciate Bildner's engaging style. Add in the mystical illustrations of Loren Long, and I can't wait to see the story continue.
