Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good plot, great characters, excellent dog--and lots of fly fishing too!.......2007-05-26

This is more than a good mystery yarn; it's a well-written novel. It's thoughtful; it has interesting, flawed, mature characters; it's often eloquent. Stoney Calhoun is a keeper. Let's hope for more of him from Tapply.

5 out of 5 stars A second encounter with Stoney Calhoun.......2007-05-06

We first met man-of-mystery and Maine fishing guide Stoney Calhoun in [...] CREEK. There we learned that Stoney didn't always live a slow, simple, and rustic life -- but exactly what he'd done before he was zapped by lightning, only the Man in the Suit knows, and he never reveals much during his occasional visits.

A Gray Ghost is a Maine salmon streamer, a fly that Stoney ties in the outdoor gear shop that he and Kate run. But Stoney also sees a few gray ghosts in human-like form in the area around Quarantine Island, where hundreds of people were once burned to death in a terrible hospital fire. When Stoney and one of his customers find a newly-burned body on that outcropping, they report it to Sheriff Dickman. The county sheriff admires Stoney's obvious investigative prowess so much that he offers to deputize the guide; and this time around, Stoney is glad to help. At first. But after that tourist is also murdered, and Stoney and Dickman find out that the first body belonged to a registered sex offender, our favorite fishing guide begins to have second thoughts about his new, albeit non-paying, duties. How are the two deaths related, anyway? And how can you be objective about the murder of somebody who probably deserved what he got?

And while Stoney steadily mulls over the investigation and who the possible suspects might be, he's also dealing with growing tension in his real job. Kate has toned down their personal relationship, and Stoney's finding it difficult to interact with her on a strictly-business basis. Will they ever get back to the way they were?

Told in a style that reflects not only Stoney's leisurely style of thinking, but also the pace of rural life in Maine ("The Way Life Should Be"), GRAY GHOST is an excellent stand-alone follow-up to [...] CREEK. In any event, you gotta admire someone who owns a Brittany spaniel named Ralph Waldo Emerson.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Bitch Creek.......2007-04-25

William G. Tapply's second Stoney Calhoun novel is a well-written (as you'd expect from Tapply) novel that combines two mysteries, romantic intrigue between the main characters, and a whole gang of mutilated bodies. Stoney Calhoun is more 'hardcore' than Tapply's other character, the good-natured Brady Coyne, and far more willing to break necks, faces, and heads in order to save his friends, his dog, and his fragile existence. I especially liked the hints and allusions to Stoney's mysterious past. I hope that Tapply illuminates it more in further books.

1 out of 5 stars YUCK.......2007-04-22

Double YUCK. This has to be one of the SLOWEST books I've ever tried to read! NOTHING HAPPENS. I started scanning about about page 10 and FINALLY on page 17 we find a body! I'm sorry I don't care a fig about fishing so probably shouldn't have pick up this POS, but I THOUGHT it was a mystery! I read a bit beyond discovery of the body but it never got better, just more depressing! We find out Stoney is in love with a married woman who's husband is disabled and Stoney has not memory and he loves to fish and...at that point I headed for the bathroom to gargle with razor blades. I also gave up before reading 30 pages. The author can have all the friends he wants review this book with a five star rating - when others start to try and read it - the truth will come out! How on EARTH did this get published??????

5 out of 5 stars Maine fish guide's second outing is atmospheric and pleasingly grisly.......2007-04-17

Stoney Calhoun's second appearance (after "Bitch Creek") finds the laconic Maine fishing guide still in love with his business partner, bait shack owner Kate Balaban, and still finding himself - literally.

Calhoun was struck by lightning seven years ago - or so he's been told. His previous life is a blank, but he keeps discovering talents, such as fly-fishing, and French. And more sinister abilities too - a knack for weapons, including his bare hands, and an eye for dangerous detail. "The man in the suit," an occasional visitor, has hinted he shouldn't remember too much.

As the story opens Calhoun embarks on a pre-dawn fishing trip with a new and amiable client, a professor, which ends in the discovery of a charred body on an uninhabited island in Casco Bay.

Then the new client is murdered on Calhoun's front porch. He takes that personally and agrees to help his friend Sheriff Dickman investigate. The charred body is a missing child molester with a roster of people who wanted him dead. But who would want to kill the professor?

The mystery is nicely handled and well paced, but the real pleasure here is Calhoun's character and the Maine outdoors. Calhoun's laid-back stubbornness and relationship with Kate make him both likable and admirable and you can just about smell the crisp Maine air and feel the tug of the fish on your line.

New Hampshire writer Tapply, author of the long-running series featuring Boston lawyer Brady Coyne, has another winner.

Book Description

A turbulent, tragic story of domestic abuse from the bestselling author of The Pilot's Wife.

Everyone believes that Maureen and Harrold English, two successful New York City journalists, have a happy, stable marriage. It's the early '70s and no one discusses or even suspects domestic abuse. But after Maureen suffers another brutal beating, she flees with her infant daughter to a coastal town in Maine. The weeks pass slowly, and just as Maureen settles into her new life and new identity, Harrold reappears, bringing the story to a violent, unforgettable climax. A labyrinth of a tale with an ingenious structure, Strange Fits of Passion is also a powerful portrait of truth and deception.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Title of book is not what you may anticipate it to be.......2007-09-13

Anita Schreve is one of my favorite authors-- commencing the day I read The Pilot's Wife--there was no way that I could have anticapated the ending of that book--a complete surprise. Following that read, I purchased her book Fortune's Rock's --another great read
Strange Fits of Passion was so good that I had difficulty putting it down.
I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A new discovered author.........2007-05-31

I just discovered Anita Shreve and so far all of her books are great!

4 out of 5 stars intriguing.......2007-04-20

Domestic violence stories are so difficult to read. Anita Shreve is such an outstanding writer, and she presented Maureen/Mary's plight in a wonderfully compassionate manner. I was on the edge of my seat reading the events as they unfolded and was saddened that Mary didn't receive the justice that she deserved. I think had this been in current times instead of the 1970's, the outcome would have been different. An excellent, thought-provoking novel from one of the best authors of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A Story that Stays With You.......2007-04-05

This book is much more than a battered wife story. The terror of the woman's experiences will stay with you long after you've put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't wait to finish it.......2007-03-16

Anita Shreve has a gift for capturing the complexities of each character she writes. This book is especially rich in local color, its primary setting being a small town in Maine. From the first page to the last, this book held my interest more than any other Shreve novel. Excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars About "The Art of Shelling".......2007-07-03

This is an excellent book which gives you exact locations of where to
find shells in various areas of the USA. It is written in a way that
most people can understand...it is specific and clear. While at the
New Jersey shore recently, I enjoyed finding out about the shells that
could be found in Gateway National Part at Sandy Hook. The book gives
good directions as to the locations of the shells so I would recommend
it for anyone who likes collecting.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best reference for a collector.......2007-05-13

One of the main issues is the lack of color illustrations or even colored pictures for the shells. Instead the book relies on black and white drawings which are not as helpful to collectors.

The book does not give a true depiction of shells of the eastern coast. Areas includes are Florida, a small bay in North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Cape Cod, and Maine. South Carolina, Georgia and much of North Carolina is left out.

On the other hand this book was very instructive about cleaning and properly caring for shells.

5 out of 5 stars Where in the World are all the Sea Shells?.......2002-04-07

This book will help anybody on the Eastern Seaboard find shelling spots from Maine to Florida. It is especially helpful with local customs and laws.

5 out of 5 stars Superbly written and organized.......2001-02-16

Now in an expanded second edition, Chuck and Debbie Robinson's The Art Of Shelling continues to be the definitive guide to finding shells and other beach collectibles at shelling locations ranging the American coastline from Maine to Florida. This compendium of information about the seashore and seashells has expanded to include new shelling locations, information on additional seashells and sea creatures, more illustrations, and an enhanced travel reference section. Superbly written and organized for the non-specialist general reader, The Art Of Shelling is a perfect guide for the hobbyist and collector, as well as the simple vacationer seeking unique mementos of their seaside visits.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-03-24

This is a great book . I have all the Benoit books and dvds. I think this is the best of the Benoit books. There is so much info in these books it's not right out front , it's between the lines but be assured its there. Tracking is regional but the Whitetail info is not. I have learned more about mature Whitetails from the Benoit books and dvds than any other source. Larry's the man no doubt but Lanny Benoit may be the best pure deer hunter alive. Theres a little horn tooting in the book but as someone once said " If you can do it it ain't braggin ". I have Hal Bloods book too it is also very very good. If you buy just one book on tracking buy this one or Hals.

3 out of 5 stars Average Book........2004-11-02

The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.

These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.

I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.

Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.

3 out of 5 stars If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you.......2003-02-04

If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.

5 out of 5 stars Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days.......2003-01-28

This is one of the best and most unique whitetail hunting books I've read. The classic and now out-of-print "How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life," did a great job of describing the Benoit tracking method. This newest book is even better.

"Big Bucks the Benoit Way" is an excellent presentation of how the Benoits hunt. The Benoits are almost exclusively trackers, and they base their techniques on what their vast experience has proven to work best: not on the theories of others. This independent thinking makes this a very refreshing book, and their dozens of 200-pound plus bucks prove that they know what they are doing.

This book is loaded with great photos of big bucks and the Benoits in their trademark green and black wool jackets. There's plenty of shots of sagging meat poles, the deep woods on snowy days, and the tracks and rubs of big bucks.

Most valuable though, is the great information on how the Benoits find, identify, and then follow the track of a heavy buck until they successfully bag him. While few of us will ever be so spectacularly successful using these methods, all of us can learn from this book. I've successfully used these same Benoit methods to track down and bag trophy bucks from Montana to Wisconsin.

Hunters who enjoy this book share a kinship in understanding the magic of the deep woods and a fresh tracking snow and the smoking hot track of a big buck. If you are that type of hunter, you will like this book.

Bruce L. Nelson, author of "Hunting Big Whitetails."

i have read big bucks the benoit way at least a dozen times.the best deer hunting book i have ever read.i live and hunt in north dakota no matter where you live and hunt you can learn from this book.as far as i am concerned larry and his family are the best deer hunters in the country they hunt in the toughest whitetail country there is out there tracking no matter what the weather is doing. HUNTING HARD EVERY DAY .taking home the biggest 200+ bucks they can find. bryce towsly and the benoits done a great job putting this book together. im hoping there will be more from the first family of deerhunting thankyou and keep bringing home those big bucks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spare the Rod ý NEGLECT the child........2000-11-14

No home movies, no photo albums, no old songs warm myheart more than traveling through New England to some of the very places described in this book. That's where my memories lie. That's where my father took me, and his father before that.

And while I have moved away, there are two great reminders of a childhood that I can only describe as ecstatic. A picture on my wall of E.B. White. And Hickoff & Plumley's book about the best places to fish. Some I've been to. Some I was taken to by these authors.

For those of you who are not as nostaglic and wistful about New England, let me with all honesty say that this book will serve as a superb and practical guidebook. And for those who have a little something more connected to the region, this book is a blueprint for irreplacable memories.

And damned good fishing spots and tips.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing in Northern New England.......2000-08-09

I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Steve Hickoff last winter. I bought this book from him at the seminar, and have used it a lot more than I ever thought I would. My family and I were on vacation at Sebago Lake in Maine recently, and the information in the book on Sebago Lake, the Crooked River, and the Presumpscott River was invaluable. The maps of the Crooked and Presumpscott rivers especially allowed me to get up early, get to a good fishing spot, and even catch a couple of fish (all before the rest of the family even knew I had gone fishing). I really like the Crooked River, it has become one of my favorites. As an earlier reviewer stated, this book gives you the information to get to the good spots, without wasting a lot of time driving around. The book also provided information on what sections of the rivers were fly fishing only, and the local regulations for taking trout and salmon. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who plans on doing any fly fishing in Maine, NH, and Vermont.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE FINEST BOOKS, I'VE EVER READ!!!!.......1999-04-19

FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF VERMONT TO THE ALLAGASH IN MAINE TO SEACOAST OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. HICKOFF AND PLUMNEY KNOW WERE IT'S AT. FROM THEORY TO FLIES TO PRACTICAL INFO. THEY NOT ONLY TALK THE TALK, THEY WALK THE WALK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY FLY FISHERMAN RATHER A BEGINNER OR A EXPERT. TIGHT LINES, STEVE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

5 out of 5 stars tells you what you need to know.......1999-04-18

I travel around New England regularly and usually have a fly rod in my car. It is always frustrating when I have a couple of hours of free time and I spend it trying to figure out where to fish instead of spending it fishing. This book has all you need to know to find a spot and catch (and hopefully release) some fish. Unlike some books the authors don't limit themselves to only one kind of fish or claim that every spot they talk about is going to rival the best place you've ever fished. Highly recommended for anyone who gets the privilege of fishing in New England!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-02-14

Kathy Scott has written a wonderful book that captures the quiet, peace and joy of the Maine countryside. Adding to that, she has interweaved it with the story of the construction of a bamboo rod by her husband, David. I think the best thing I can say about it is that it reads as if you were in the same room with her, talking about things that please and things that matter. She continues this story in the second book, Headwaters Fall As Snow, another wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading.......2002-05-30

I found the reading of Moose in the Water Bamboo on the Bench so enjoyable I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book. This was one of the most enjoyable books I had read in a long time concerning flyfishing and the outdoors. Kathy Scott has done a fantastic job taking you on a journey from start to finish through the adventures she and her husband experience in the Maine woods and his building of a bamboo fly rod. I have read this book 3 times I find that enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and and loves to just read a good book. I greatly anticipate Kathy's next book.

Looking through the Book, I will keep it with me while on road trips and when planning camping trips. I bought the book to see if I could learn anything more about my area central & northern New Hampshire. It only dedicates about 10 pages to Northern NH and everything that is listed on central NH I already knew.

5 out of 5 stars Useful information.......2004-08-13

Actually, I would normally rate this book a 4 but I thought the previous rating showing a 2 was too low. I found the book to be very helpful. Not being familar with Maine, VT, or NH, I was able to quicky determine not just where to fish but where not to fish. The book is targeted more toward fly fishermen (I am one of those) and it lists what hatches are on the stream. A familar fly fisherman knows roughly what month such hatches are around. I would highly recommend this book over a Maine Gazette map which will not give you the detailed directions to some popular fishing spots.

2 out of 5 stars Not to much info here..........2002-04-20

A nice collection of maps and general info, however, this title doesn't supply much more information than the NH Gazetteer. Can't speak as specifically to the VT and ME sections. Little info on when to fish, just general descriptions of how to get there and what may or may not be stocked. Really just a surface survey.

Book Description

"No tier of that period was as creative in designing patterns or tied better quality, more lifelike streamers than Mrs. Stevens. This biography has been carefully researched and beautifully written."- Keith Fulsher, master fly tier, originator of the Thunder Creek series

Carrie Stevens (1882-1970) of Upper Dam, Maine, created some of the most beautiful and enduring streamer patterns ever, including the legendary Gray Ghost, which she designed to catch the giant brook trout and landlocked salmon of the Rangeley Lakes. This long-awaited book is both a history of the woman and the region, as well as a guide to the Stevens method. It includes color plates of original patterns, some only recently discovered, along with a biography illustrated with archival photos. The tying section lists dressings for more than 100 streamers, 65 of which have never been published.

Graydon R. Hilyard has been studying Carrie Stevens and collecting her work for fifteen years. His son Leslie, a champion fly tier, tied patterns for the book and contributed to the research.

4 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2000-12-15

This is an odd book. Playboy of the month for June, 1997, Carrie Stevens had distinctive flame-red hair and firm, natural breasts. However, in the three years since then, she appears to have gone downhill in the looks department, and moved to an alternative career as a fisherwoman. This is quite odd, as Playmates usually attempt a career in acting or, in the modern era, as 'goddesses of the web'. Carrie's decision to take such a drastic career move is surely evidence of a strong personality, one which separates her from the traditionally airheaded view of Playmates. Nice one, Carrie!

5 out of 5 stars The Real History of Streamers.......2000-05-27

This is a superlative book on a par with The Art of the Salmon Fly by J.Bates. It has many beautiful photos of the streamers, well laid out and functionally depicted. The first half of the book tells in detail what was happening in the Rangely Lakes region and is a wonderful vingette of the real history of the lakes. The second half concentrates on the flies and tying. With photos of highest quality and fine desciptions, this is a book that will last. The tie-in to Joe Bates was, for me, a treat as he lived in my town and I visited him on several occassions. This was just the book I was lookng for on streamers. It has a look of substance, great directions, and clear recipies. If you are a serious fly fisherman, or want to be this book belongs on your shelf. There is a lot of junk out there on modern fly fishing, this book is a huge contrast. I am amazed by the amount of research that went into it;it is no wonder that it took fifteen years to compile. If you are like me, and want a book that shows high quality text and graphics and patterns that are legendary and useful , buy this book without hesitation. I read it the first day it came.Good job by this father and son team.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Fly Fisherman's Library.......2000-04-15

I was unable to put this book down until I had read the entire contents. It is a historical treasure, rich in information and photographs that will be greatly appreciated by any fly fisherman. The color photographic and printing quality is excellent. A significant portion of the book is filled with details on the Stevens streamer fly patterns and the specific information for a fly tyer to create them. A great combination of fly fishing history and a fly tying "cook book". I plan to buy a number of additional copies for gifts to fishing friends.

    Book Description

Where and how to fly fish within two or three hours of downtown Boston.

Terry Tessein, a veteran of a lifetime of fishing the New England coastline, shares those years of experience in the first detailed guidebook to the multitude of fly fishing possibilities within easy reach of downtown Boston. From the shores of Rhode Island to the coastline of southern Maine, Tessein will guide the reader on where to go, when to go to find particular species, and what flies and tactics to use at each venue.

Fly Fishing Boston covers both well known areas like the Joppa Flats of Newburyport, as well as the relatively unknown and underfished areas along this stretch. In addition, Tessein explains such important coastal fishing information as tides and how they affect the movement of fish. Finally, Fly Fishing Boston is detailed enough to provide even regional fly patterns unique to specific zones. It will be a book to both read in the off-season and to pack in the tackle bag when heading out for a day of fishing. 30 black and white photographs, 6 maps, index.
