The BEST Beginner's & Intermediate Guide to In-Line Skating.......2007-10-04
The most complete guide on, comprehensive step-by-step, In-Line skating lessons. It takes you from beginner to advanced intermediate in the safest way. The fear of falling is gone; you learn how to fall and get up properly. The Yoga poses are very helpful for balance, strength and increased range of motion. Chapter 7 teaches you how to stay fit with "roll-aerobics". Key terms, skate maintenance, safety, etc. are all covered. If a DVD on the skating techniques accompanied the guide on "GET ROLLING" it would obliterate every in-line skating manual.
For the absolute beginner.......2007-01-10
Just an intro about me, I'm a 40yr old male and having lost weight and seeking a more active lifestyle decided that all the times I'd seen rollerbladers on the beach walk, it was for me.
This book will take you from a never skated numbty to a skater with confidence in about 15hour sessions, I'm now over 20-25hours skating and have progressed through the book. It is quite straight forward and although you will find the need to have the book on hand during practice, it will guide you through what corrections you may need to take to finally master the skills. (Some skills took me more time than others to pick up, when I finally realised I wasn't quite carrying out the practice/tuition right.)
While I still manage to have the odd moment (almost falling) it is nice to be able to skate the local beach walk (3km's) knowing that I can stop turn and steer to avoid 'moments'.
Without this book, I believe I'd still be stumbling along in the carpark, frustrated that I wasted so much money. In my area there is limited tuition and this book was just what I needed.
I encourage beginners to heed the safety advice and also purchase 'crash pants' - I spent 2 weeks waiting for skin and bruising to heal from being over enthusiastic in attempting a hill trail too soon.
Get the book, get some good skates and find a vacant flat lot for your first 10hours - try some trails and go back to the lot to build your skills.
I'm enjoying the sport and hope that I can do so for many more of my 'aging' years.
Good Luck.
A good book for Beginners.......2004-02-20
This book is very systematic and teaches basic and intermediate technique in an easy to follow format. The strength of this book is the descriptions and the pictures that match many of the descriptions. The focus on safety and confidence-building drills "before you roll" make this a good book for us beginners. This book would augment any class. But here in rural Utah where there are no inline skating classes, the drills allow one to practice in stages using the book alone. The author DOES recommend professional instruction and says early on not to depend on the book alone...
Book Description
The world–champion freestyle skateboarder and the man who brought the ollie – the trick that revolutionised the sport by taking it from the ground to the air – to street skating shares the history of skateboarding, as he tells the dramatic story of his life.
At the age of 13, Rodney took the freestyle skating world by storm. He won 35 world titles in less than five years. But through it all, his father looked down on his son's love for skating and pressured him to walk away from the sport and leave behind his fans and status as the most famous skateboarder of his era. After years of stress and conflict, Rodney gave in and promised his father he'd quit for good. But by the time he finally broke free from his suffocating and abusive home life, the popularity of freestyle had waned and given way to vert and street styles. So Rodney picked up his board and started from scratch. With the help of mentor Mike Ternansky, Rodney used his freestyle background to usher in a whole new era of street skating.
Today Rodney is more popular than ever. The videos in his series Rodney Versus Daewon are among the most popular skateboard videos ever produced. He won the 2002 Transworld Skateboarding readers' choice award for favourite street skater and is the most popular character on the top–selling Tony Hawk's Pro Skater video games.

Genius.......2007-05-15
Possibly the best book I ever read. Although the history of skating through Rodney's eyes is fascinating, the true treasure of this book is seeing the world through Rodney's eyes. It is a beautifully told story with generous honesty. Being a skater is irrelevant to liking this book. If you've ever been young and had dreams, then you should be reading it.
A real and inspiring story.......2007-04-24
I'm 27 years old and grew up watching all the legends like Rodney, Tony Hawk, Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, etc. This is an amazing book not just because of it's relation to skateboarding, but because it tells a story of what it's like to sacrifice everything for what you love. If you are passionate about anything in your life and especially if you are young, facing opposition, reading this book may inspire you to follow your heart and what you believe.
I can relate to this book a lot because my father and Rodney's were of the same batch. I also felt that we had similar struggles as misfits in life. I highly recommend this book to anyone. It's an interesting read and a great story of someone who succeeded in life.
The Mutt is cool.......2006-10-13
In the book "The Mutt" it shows the life of Rodney Mullens struggles of becoming a pro skateboarder. This book kept me very interested through the whole book. This book wasn not like other autobiographies, this one had a very interesting story to it and was very exciting to read. It was very fun for me to read because I like to skateboard as well. I was able to see how difficult it was for him to get to the point of his life where he is now.
I liked this book also because of the information he shared of his childhood as skater. He showed things that i never knew about of when he was a child and an adult. In some sense i was able to compare some of my life to his. We both had struggles in School and with girls and have had some family issues. Which was one of the things that kept me interested in his book.
So in conclusion I think that all skaters should read this book. Im sure any skater can relate to this book. After finishing the book i lend it to a freind who i later found out that he enjoyed it as much as I did. So if any body likes autobiograpghies on sports athletes then i suggest reading this book. And this is why I enjoyed "The Mutt"
great read.......2006-08-19
I found this book to be very interesting, and a great read. It is well worth the price, and I definitely suggest that you buy it.
Inspriational Story.......2005-07-31
The first time I saw Rodney Mullen was in 1986 at the University of Florida. I was between classes and, obviously Rodney was too. I was a skateboarder from 1976 to 1980 and had kept up with what was going on after that so, I knew who Rodney Mullen was. For about 30 minutes, I watched him do the most amazing tricks I had ever seen. He was skating by himself and I was the only one watching him.
Now that I am 40, my 11 year old son is getting into skateboarding. I wondered, "Whatever happened to Rodney Mullen?"
I found this book through a search for "Rodney Mullen" on Amazon. His story is very inspirational. I'm glad that he was able to find peace with his father and find happiness.
I can't imagine anyone doing for skateboarding what Rodney Mullen has done.
Book Description
The 1950s phenomenon of Roller Derby is back in full force, and it's definitely not your grandma's game anymore. With leagues in more than one hundred cities across the country, a national tournament, and major sponsors, the new wave of the sport has gone mainstream. No one is better qualified to tell the story of Flat Track Derby's astronomic rise than Melissa "Melicious" Joulwan. As a founding member of the Texas Rollergirls -- the league that launched the sport and the reigning national champions -- she has helped redefine what it means to be stylish, sporty, and sexy.
With her mouthy, tough-as-nails style, Melicious recounts her best tales from the track: her fierce rivalries with The Wrench and Ivanna S. Pankin, the scene at the annual national tournament, the thrill of a bout, and the infractions that so often bring her to the penalty box. From the minute she first laced up her skates and wrapped herself in her alter ego, Roller Derby has given her a confidence boost, and she shares the positive impact the sport has also had on girls -- young and not-so-young -- who tack posters of her on their bedroom walls and lace up their own skates.
Complete with photos and suggestions on how to develop a Rollergirl name and persona, this unprecedented tell-all comes from the woman who's watched the sport evolve from an underground Friday-night event to a bona fide national phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-07-23
While Melicious' book does provide some insight into the modern roller derby revival, "Totally True" it's not. It is factual - that is to say there is nothing "made up," but she was under no obligation to apply journalistic standards of balance and integrity to her book. The facts that she did select reflect this.
A great inside look at today's derby........2007-07-19
This book was just what I needed. I just started as freshmeat with the Philly Roller Girls and read this book before I went to tryouts. It gave me an inside look at what I might expect in the derby world. Reading about Melissa's experience coming into her league and starting from scratch was really inspiring. She explains what it takes to be a derby girl, what to expect, how tough it all really is, and how rewarding it and the derby community can be. I definitely recommend this book if you're at all interested in the most recent derby revolution. It's taking over and it's awesome!
Roller Derby Rocks.......2007-07-09
Amazing, witty and informative. Melicious' book taught me new ways to practice, ways to perfect my persona and even how to develop an awesome signature for autographs. This book is amazing for girls just starting their derby adventure and for girls that have been in the "biz" for years. I ate it UP! Ace Face, Star City Rollergirls. Roanoke, VA.
I am officially inspried! Thanks, Melicious!.......2007-05-01
I attended the very same roller derby bout that inspired Melicious to become a rollergirl. I was awed and wildly entertained by the spectacle of roller derby and really wanted to join up myself. Unlike Melicious I was too scared to do something that looked like soooo much fun. The girls out there just looked so intense. I just didn't think there was any way I could do something like that. I've continued to attend roller derby and have enjoyed the heck out of it. But, I always wished I had the courage to try-out.
So, when I received 'Rollergirl' as a present last month I was thrilled to read about a sport that I enjoyed watching so much. I'm happy to say that I loved this book. It's fun, and entertaining, with tons of great stories about the early days of the roller derby revival. I enjoyed reading about all the behind-the-scenes stuff, and the fun stories of roller derby drama.
The best part, is that this book inspired me to finally pursue my dream of being a rollergirl. The way Melicious describes her league and her fellow rollergirls made them seem strong, but also human. The more I read, the more I realized that roller derby is full of regular chicks just like me. They practice hard, and they skate like demons but they are real people. So, I'm officially inspired to try-out. I've got my speed skates, skate lessons, and tons of gear. I've also got butterflies in my stomach and a whole lot of admiration for Melicious for showing me that I could do something I really wanted to do.
Thanks!
Excellent read!.......2007-04-30
This book was very down to earth, a very easy and entertaining read. Any new commers to the sport will learn the rules and atmosphere to where anyone would be able to "jump in" and understand and enjoy roller derby.

excellent help.......2006-08-28
I spent a fortune on private, Total Immersion swim coaching and still couldn't swim more than 250 yd without a splitting headache. Didn't expect to get much from a book on swimming, but was desperate. It was great! I figured out exactly what I was doing wrong (kicking too fast), and went out and swam a mile. I'm not making this up! Would have given it five stars, but the pictures were not as clear as I'd hoped. Could have used more illustrations or photos, but directions were extremely clear.
I really struggled until I found this book.......2005-11-16
I wanted to learn how to swim better. I tried a few other books, worked hard, and got nowhere. I began to believe it was impossible to learn swimming from a book. Swimming books tend to be lists of little things which can make you swim better. These lists are addressed to people who already know how to swim and do not add up to instructions for a new swimmer.
Tarpinians book is different. It told me in a simple fashion what I needed to do, how to do it and why. Reading just a handful of pages from this book has been the single most effective thing I've done to improve my swimming.
Skillful, Exemplary.......2003-10-06
The brevity of this effective, perfectly edited swimming manual is sweet indeed. Not one word too long, it will teach you to swim better than you ever have before, teaching you the fundamentals of freestyle, improving your freestyle, and then using a goal-oriented drill program, developing the four main strokes of swimming (freestyle, breastroke, backstroke, and butterfly). It touches on strength training and the brief nutrion chapter, which basically says, if you eat garbage (empty calories) insteady of health food (fruits and vegetables) is better than a lot of popular nutrition books I've read. Practical, resourceful, and knowledgeable, the books is truly like having a coach right there.
Lots of useful info on strokes and training.......2001-11-12
I used this book in conjunction with lone recreational work outs. I significantly improved my freestyle stroke in a few months after swimming most of my life. I had swim on YMCA and summer teams for a large chunk of my adolescence. I venture to guess it could be useful in one way or another for a person just starting out in a pool to a master level adult. It also includes info on other strokes but I used the book mainly for freestyle.
Excellent reference for the freestyle swimmer.......2001-05-02
This book is a great tool for learning how to swim the freestyle, or just for pointers when you need to improve your technique. It provides drills for improving freestyle technique, and great tips on how to design swim workouts. The only problem I had with this book is that it does not devote any time at all to the other three strokes, as they are all compiled into one chapter which does not include any drills or pointers. The rest of the book, which includes tips on nutrition and stretching, is meant as a tool only for beginners. If you are new to swimming or don't have access to a coach, I highly recommend this book to improve your swimming technique.

How to Jump & Spin on Inline Skates.......2007-09-10
This is a very enjoyable book, and the written descriptions of how to do each jump are very clear. The one thing I really wish it had are clearer illustrations! The stick-figures are confusing, and make it impossible to see which leg or arm is in front or in back. A stop-action progression of photos, or at least a more lifelike, detailed illustration would go a long way towards enhancing the understanding of how these moves are done. Overall, I still recommend the book, and have found the information useful - especially considering there isn't much (if anything) written about this subject.
A GREAT BOOK!.......2006-08-01
This book is so much fun!
I am an ice and roller skater. Now, I'm able to in-line skate like I do on the ice and on traditional roller skates!
HOW TO JUMP AND SPIN ON IN-LINE SKATES has taught me what to do.
What I like the best is that I can now do spins on in-line skates. The writer explains in detail how to do moves.
When I follow the steps described, I find myself doing amazing things.
I really like the photos and drawings of the skaters in action.
Every day, I can't wait to get my skates on!
I LOVE SKATING because of this book!.......2006-08-01
Jo Ann's writing style is so fun, and every section makes me want to put my skates on and try what she writes about. The drawings by Larisa Gendernalik are great! They show that the artist does know much about figure skating.
Everyone who loves to skate must read this book since it will make you want to skate and skate and skate.
I am an ice skater and what is amazing is that this book has helped me with my ice skating too.
Thank you, Jo Ann, for writing this book!
What People Are Saying About the Book:.......2006-08-01
From Liz Miller, well-known California skating instructor and author of the books Get Rolling, Advanced Inline Skating and California Inline Skating:
"Jo Ann has a warm, encouraging and very enthusiastic writing style, and she delivers what the book's title promises: information about the inline figure skating discipline, gear, and moves. The gear section and glossary are also useful."
From John Petell, President of Harmony Sports:
"Jo Ann's book is a giant step toward exposing the fine sport of inline freestyle skating, with its many and wonderous movements, to the public.
From Nick Perna, National and International figure skating coach and co-inventor of the Pic-Frame skate:
"This book is well written and extremely thorough for this type of instruction. I think just about anybody who is interested in inline figure skating techniques will be able to learn something new from this book. I hope someone in the future will do an instructional video based on the book!"
May be useful for beginning inline adults...NOT for ice skaters.......2006-07-17
Definitely not for any cross-over (no pun intended) figure skaters.
If you are past the USFSA Basic Skills level, the only page in this book that has any potential of being helpful is page 35, "A note to ice skaters."
I really appreciate the efforts of this book and the niche subject, but it is obviously vanity published, and therefore very, very unprofessional and vexing to read.
In perspective, however, I acquired one skating tip from this book for $13 plus shipping, which is considerably cheaper than one tip from a Russian skating coach, plus shipping :)

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not deep; doesn't always flow through concepts.......2000-07-09
I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. My experience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for a book to, "take me to the next level."
This is a good book, but it isn't that.
There are some good pictures that show how to do certain maneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrations rather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept across to the reader.
The written descriptions on how to do certain things, such as a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if the author would build up to certain tasks.
For example, the author might teach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form the foundation of a Y-stop.
Learning is about developing a foundation and building on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent of everything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I had moved to the next level because of this book.
Don't get me wrong, I learned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.
Good book for beginner skaters.......1997-10-12
If you are enthusiastic about inline skating, you probably want to read everything about it you can get your hands on. I have read 3 or 4 books so far. I have learned at least something good-to-know from each one -- this one included. It's cheap enough -- order it and read it!
Product Description
Former professional Roller Derby skater, referee, photographer and fan, Jim Fitzpatrick spent years compiling a huge collection of memorabilia of the original Roller Derby along with some of the outlaw leagues which sprang up over the years. Now for the first time he gives a glimpse into the wild world of banked track mayhem with many rare and never before seen photos. A number of photos had been given to him by his friend and Roller Derby legend, Ann Calvello. Ann wrote the forward to the book. Also a number of soon to be classic photos taken by Jonathan Perry, famed Roller Derby photographer, are included along with a few the author had taken over the years.
Enjoy this look back on a sport which refuses to die. The original Roller Derby ended in 1973 but today still lives on in a number of variations, including the all-girl leagues which now number in the thirties.
Customer Reviews:
Roller derby....A Classic it is.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed Jim Fitzpartick's book. I was good to see pictures of the good old days of Roller Derby and not what a joke promoters have turn it into. I attended every game held at the old Cleveland arena in the late 60's and earlt 70's and never heard profanity out of the IRDL skaters. When the lame T-Birds showed up the scene changed. Thanks a million Jim for the wonderful memories.
Roller Derby Classics and more!.......2006-03-01
This is a wonderful pictorial history on the original Roller Derby. It brought back many fond memories, not only of the game but the people who skated it. What added to the book was the fact you could tell how much the author loved the sport. After growing up a fan, he tells of later became a professional skater and then a referee. He even included many wonderful photographs he personally took at many of the games along with some behind the scenes shots.
I especially loved seeing the early days of the sport long before I was born. I also appreciated the captions below the photos explaining who the skaters were, the locations and years involved. Often other books included wonderful photographs but supply no helpful info to let you know where or when it took place.
I know the price may be a little steep, but as a collector I have purchased single photos or magazines on E-Bay for over $25 a piece. A book like this containing hundreds of wonderful photos is well worth it!
This is a must book for anyone who grew up loving the Roller Derby. Here's to the good old days!
A Must For Every Roller Derby Fan!.......2006-02-18
There isn't alot written on the subject of Roller Derby. As a matter of fact, there isn't much written in this book, Roller Derby Classics. However what little is written is not only entertaining, it gives a brief background into this author's career as a Roller Derby skater & referee. It also has an introduction ( A Rather Colorful One!) by Ann Calvello, and is written as though she is standing next to you, in a conversation!
The pictures have a caption on the bottom. It is brief yet with the picture tells a thousand stories and brings back many a fond memorary for this Roller Derby fan! Yes, the price of the book is abit steep. However for what it is worth, I am not disappointed by Fitzpatrick's work to make this book possible for ever Roller Derby fan, and those interested in Roller Derby! It is worth every penny! Or worth saving your pennies for!
The BEST photo book on roller derby ever published.......2006-01-22
This is the best and only professional photo journal of the game known as roller derby. It is full of rare photo's that I have never seen before, documenting many decades of the sport through the images of some of it's greatest skating stars.
I have my copy on my living room coffee table. Everyone who visits always picks it up, and enjoy reliving their fondest memories of this very popular sport.

Best tool ever for inline and ice speed skaters.......2007-08-31
This book is thorugh and even those of us that are completely uneducated about athletics and how to improve in them can understand clearly what is written in this book. I was afraid it would be too technical but it caters to all levels of knowledge. I am very impressed. I plan to start impleting these practices very soon.
Inline Speed Skating.......2005-05-31
From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.
I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.
Get speedier on skates!.......2003-04-12
A must have. Loaded with information and great pictures. Also very technical training schedules for the serious skaters. Not too much for short trackers but still alot of useful skating information.
Great book of novice and elite skaters.......2002-08-01
This is a great book for anyone involved in in-line or ice speedskating. Being a speedskater myself, I have had much success using the book. It is great for novice and elite skaters. The book offers a lot of information regarding techinique and training. I hope others have or will have as much success using this book as I have.
A MUST-HAVE FOR ANY SPEEDSKATERS LIBRARY!!!
Very Good Book.......2002-07-30
This is a wonderful book for those who participate in the sport of speedskating. I have had a lot of success using the techiniques and advice in this book. You can be a novice or elite skater and this book can still help you out so much. This book gives detailed explinations of ice and in-line speedskating. I hope this book has and will help others in their speedskating career.
