Hiking Florida
ASIN: 0881505315 |
Book Description
This new hiking guide to the region of Florida south of FL 60 includes hikes along the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast, and in Big Cypress Swamp, the Everglades, and the Florida Keys.
In the entire continental United States, only South Florida can lay claim to truly tropical habitats with native tropical plants. Rare ghost orchids grow in the humid depths of the Big Cypress, a region of vast prairies, haunting cypress strands, and deep sloughs filled with alligator flag. From its traditional start at Lake Okeechobee, the world's only Everglades sweep southward. North of Lake Okeechobee lie the remnants of ancient sand dunes forming high and dry scrub habitats, while along the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coastlines the freshwater marshes of the interior meet the mangrove swamps of the barrier islands. In the Florida Keys, jungles of Caribbean plants top fossilized coral reefs surrounded by still aquamarine waters.
This new guide to this fascinating region contains a mix of easy nature trails, beach walks, and short interpretive boardwalks, as well as challenging day hikes and backpacking trips. The hikes range in length from 1 to 20 miles; each hike description includes mile-by-mile directions, a topographic map, and information on hiking time, mileage, and trail conditions. Features 50 spectacular black & white photographs by Clyde Butcher.
Customer Reviews:
Very good trail book.......2004-02-21
This whole series is a great intro into hiking the "real" Florida I own all 3, South, North and Central -- is Panhandle coming soon?
Sandra is a real hiker with a great eye for detail. She also works with the Florida Trail Association and highlights several FT trails in each of her FL hiking books. She seems to have hiked every trail in Florida. This book contains a good sample of all types of hikes / backpacking trails from short nature trails to the 30+ miles in Myakka River State Park. I use these books as a good way to find new trails.

Book Description
M. J. Eberhart, aka the Nimblewill Nomad, was a 60-year-old retired doctor in January 1998 when he set off on a foot journey that carried him 4,400 miles (twice the length of the Appalachian Trail) from the Florida Keys to the far north of Quebec. Written in a vivid journal style, the author unabashedly recounts the good (friendships with other hikers he met), the bad (sore legs, cutting winds and rain), and the godawful (those dispiriting doubts) aspects of his days of walking along what has since become known as the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT). An amazing tale of self-discovery and insight into the magic that reverberates from intense physical exertion and a high goal, Eberhart’s is the only written account of a thru-hike along the ECT. Covering 16 states and 2 Canadian provinces, Ten Million Steps deftly mixes practical considerations of an almost unimaginable undertaking with the author’s trademark humor and philosophical musings.
Customer Reviews:
Great read-10 stars.......2007-06-21
I received my copy today and I'm up to page 100. It is a blend of humor, a man's journey, and numerous inspiring quotes...that makes me want to hit Eastern Mountain Sports and start the hike. Someday I plan to hike the Triple Crown, etc. Cheers to this man who has had the desire, dream and drive to complete an epic journey and share it with the world. Thanks for a great read and giving me another glimpse into long-distance hiking.
Wow!.......2007-05-26
Wow! That's really "Hit the road Jack". I live near the Florida Trail but swamp wading with the snakes and the gators? No way Jose! But I am totally enjoying it from my armchair. Go get them. You are a better man than me Charlie Brown!

Hiking Florida
ASIN: 0881505234 |
Book Description
A hiking guide to one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems in the country.
What Florida's landscape lacks in topography, it makes up for in diversity, ranging from temperate Appalachian-style forests to tangled tropical jungles. Here hikers enjoy a broad range of habitats and wildlife that only Hawaii and California surpass. Trails pass through desert-like scrub islands, jungle-like hydric hammocks, and deep, dark bayous where giant cypress trees rise out of inky water. Footpaths range through salt marshes, river floodplains, and along coastal dunes and beaches with sparkling white sand. Florida has the world's only Everglades, and the delightful landforms of karstdisappearing lakes and streams, yawning sinkholes lush with ferns, and the world's largest concentration of first-magnitude springs. More than 1,200 contiguous miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail stretch from the beaches of Pensacola, at the western edge of the Panhandle, to the Big Cypress Swamp in the Everglades.
The hikes in this new guide to the heart of the peninsula range in length from 1 mile to 43.3 miles. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, time, and terrain. 40 black & white photographs, 51 maps, index.
Customer Reviews:
"50 Hikes in Central Florida".......2003-01-10
This book is a terrific guide to the real Florida. The directions (both to the trailheads and on the trails) are easy to follow and accurate. The descriptions include interesting bits about flora, fauna, and geography as well as the occasional snippet of Florida history. It's an outstanding book for someone wondering how to get into the woods in central Florida; even those who hike central Florida regularly will find some new gems to explore. This is a great guidebook!
Great Hiking Guide!.......2002-12-17
This is a hiking guide that has it all. Not only does it give clear directions on how to find the trails and precise information such as length and degree of difficulty, it includes lyrical narratives of the beautiful and interesting sights you will see as you hike.
For those who think of Central Florida as a land of theme parks and T-shirt shops, this book will open their eyes to the natural beauty that still exists, just minutes away from the tourist attractions.

Book Description
"Not only does Molloy give clear, evocative descriptions of each trail, he provides distances, hazards, the best season to make the hike, and where to get maps. . . . This book should be in every hiker's backpack."--Outdoor Adventure
"This detailed guidebook is interesting even if you never plan to hike. It tells all sorts of interesting historical tidbits about Key Biscayne, the Everglades, Ocala National Forest and other places."--Tampa Tribune
"A comprehensive presentation of the hiking trails on [Florida's] federal lands."--Kent L. Wimmer, Florida National Scenic Trail Liaison
"A well-written guide to Florida's wild places [and] to the real side of Florida. . . . It would make any outdoor enthusiast want to get out and hike."--Joan Hobson, vice president of trail maintenance, Florida Trail Association
For Florida hikers, vacationers, outdoor enthusiasts, and wildlife watchers who want to plan and execute their own adventures, this second edition of the popular guidebook will be indispensable. Molloy and Friend explore the trails of Florida to provide readers with an easy-to-use, accurate, and thorough guide to hiking in more than 2 million acres of federally owned wilderness. These areas contain some of the Sunshine State's most spectacular scenery--from pristine beaches and emerald oceans to towering pine forests and sparkling spring-fed lakes.
Illustrated with photographs by the authors, this guide describes every marked and maintained trail in Florida's national forests, parks, and preserves. Each description contains a profile of the path, detailing and rating its condition, length, and difficulty and describing the highlights and hazards of the trail. Profiles also give trailhead directions, trail connections, and hiking season information, followed by a running narrative describing what hikers can expect to see and experience on the trails. This updated edition covers large and small changes in the trails since 2000, most notably the new western corridor of the Florida Trail through Ocala National Forest and the storm-driven changes to the same trail at Gulf Island National Seashore and in Everglades National Park. Also included is a new section on Canaveral National Seashore.
The book also features vignettes of natural and human history along the trails. Many of the areas border sinkholes and other geologic formations, wind through fascinating ecosystems such as the Everglades, and pass by historic sites such as old roadways, mail routes, battlefields, and military forts, and Molloy and Friend highlight these throughout the book in fascinating anecdotes. They also provide information on what to wear and bring on hiking expeditions to maximize safety and comfort along the great hiking trails of Florida's protected lands.
Customer Reviews:
The Hiking Trails of Florida's National Forests, Parks, and Preserves.......2007-08-09
Good book with plenty of trail descriptions for the areas referred to in the title. Doesn't have any maps which is a downside, doesn't go over potential campsites very thoroughly either. All in all a good book. but you'll have to get Florida Trail maps to get a good feel for the hikes in here.
Great Guide.......2002-03-22
I thought the big Cypress Preserve was a wasteland until I bought this book. After hiking the Florida Trail through here I realize way they call it a preserve. The trip was challenging but Molloy's book helped immensely, especially with campsites.
I'm now headed to the Apalachicola National Forest for a week long hike before summer hits. The clear trailhead directions in this book will make it easy to get started. Wish me luck.

Hiking Florida
ASIN: 0881505307 |
Book Description
A guide to 50 hikes and backpacking trips in the northern Florida peninsula, ranging from State Road 40 to the Georgia border and east of the panhandle.
With numerous state parks and expansive state and national forests, North Florida provides the hiker with an extensive array of natural communities to explore. Forests of longleaf and slash pine flatwoods, coastal hammocks, desert scrub, and floodplain forests create welcoming habitats for vanishing species. The region's geology offers physical challenges for the hiker as welldeep ravines, rough riverside trails along steep bluffs, and giant sinkholes. Hiking in North Florida means the opportunity to camp along the state's broadest rivers, to clamber in and out of ravines and up and over relict dunes, to walk to the edge of sweeping vistas across prairies and salt marshes, to hike along vast lakes and bubbling springs.
The hikes described in this all-new guide range in length from 1 to 22 miles. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, terrain, and hiking time. An overview chart makes it easy to pick a hike for every ability. 50 black & white photographs , 58 maps, index.
