Fly Rodding Estuaries.......2003-12-12
The book begins with a definition of estuaries and then discusses various conditions one can expect to encounter and what these mean for the fishing. Variables include tidal range and times, salinity, currents etc and these are important in sorting through otherwise "big empty bodies of water." The book then goes on to break down estuarine bodies of water into several types including salt ponds, lagoon, inlets, bays and coves, tidal creeks and marshes. There are also chapters on getting around in these environments, thoughts on tackle, flies and techniques.
The book is 148 pps long and is attractivley and durably printed on heavy gloss stock. All graphics are in color and add a lot to the otherwise fine content. While the concepts involved are applicable to all estuarine environments, the author's considerable experience in the Northeast, particularly Connecticut and Rhode Island is apparent. It is not however, a "where to go" book, but is instead focused on water types and techniques.
Overall, this book is well worth acquiring. The information is sound and generally well presented. I personally would have liked a little more on nightime approaches and worm hatches, although these are both covered. These are minor points however. Everyone can learn something from this book and the process is an enjoyable one at that.

Book Description
The first and only book to reveal when, where, and how to catch the amazing false albacore. The false albacore is a strong and lightning-fast member of the tuna family that has been discovered by the saltwater flyfishing world as one of the most challenging species to target. These fish are so fast and so strong for their weight that they are known to break fishermen's hearts along with their expensive fly rods. False Albacore covers the life history, biology, migratory patterns, and feeding habits of this great fish, as well as the tackle and techniques that are necessary to catch them.
These fast-moving beauties migrate down the eastern coastline from Massachusetts to Florida each fall. The recognized mecca for pursuing them is North Carolina, where the greatest fly fishermen from around the world congregate to take part in the fall blitz. Tom Gilmore has spent years learning their tricks, as well as those of the guides that pursue them. He has uncovered hot spots ranging from Massachusetts to as yet undiscovered waters in Florida. Reel-Time's Review of "False Albacore".......2003-12-30
Gilmore, who is president and CEO of the New Jersey Audubon Society, is a good writer who gets right down to business, and wastes little time in delving into the details of what tackle, flies, and technique is needed to nail an albie on the fly rod. While the book assumes some fly fishing experience, and doesn't attempt to teach too many basics, it is a perfect starting point for a beginning and intermediate saltwater angler looking to diversify his or her catch list from the usual stripers and blues to something with an exotic punch.
The book is well illustrated, includes an excellent set of color photographs of top fly patterns as tied by their originators, and is divided between a comprehensive how-to section in the first-halt and a guide to false albacore hot spots from Massachusetts to Florida. Gilmore interviewed more than 50 guides and other experts in researching False Albacore , collecting the kind of hard won experience from a broad group that yields some nuggets and tricks that even the most experienced false albacore angler can appreciate.
Having a bit of a false albacore "problem" myself, and having devoted far too many hours and tanks of gas in pursuit of the fish, I consider myself a capable, if not experienced fisherman when it comes to albies. Yet on multiple occasions throughout the book I found myself taking note of some insights that while intuitively I may have picked up on the water, I had never really consciously considered until reading Gilmore.
As any one can attest, finding then casting, and finally hooking and landing a false albacore can seem like an extremely daunting prospect at first. Gilmore cuts away at a lot of the uncertainty by emphasizing tide, structure, the prevalent baitfish, small patterns over large, slow sinking lines over floaters (in most circumstances), blind casting, and preparation. With the added bonus of some specific directions to some well-known albacore spots, this is an essential book for someone setting out to find a tiny tuna for the first time.

Bent rods and screaming reels!.......2003-04-30
His Knowledge and Practical Expierience come through in this well researched book, making this comprehensive guide perfectly clear to fishermen of all skill levels who read it.
This book was extremely helpful offering all pertinent information from tackle to seasonal Hotspots. If you are not yet an Albie angler read this book and you'll soon be!
Save your money and invest in Crease Flies!.......2003-01-21
If you've caught one Albie, most of this book won't be that helpful. Most of Gilmore's insights are anecdotal, based solely on his experience and guide interviews, but it's not his fault. What scientist would be interested in studying a "trash" fish? The locale guide and guide directory will save you a lot of research time. One thing to note is that Montauk and Harkers are great Albie fisheries, but on a weekends are a mess with boats everywhere. You can easily hook someone in another boat with your back cast.
I'd also would have loved to see more photos of smiling anglers with a fish. I look forward to the second edition with more substance. Despite the it's flaws, this book will probably become a classic.

"Fishermans' Coast" a fresh approach to an angling book.......2004-01-24
Dr. Aaron Adams, (for those who haven't had the pleasure of meeting him), for me, is the much envied combination of marine biologist/ecologist and avid fisherman. His quest for knowledge and understanding of the subject matter has brought him through a life path of experience, research and education, recently earning a PH.D in marine ecology.
His enthusiasm for marine fisheries and their environments, along with an insatiable excitement for fly fishing, has proved to be more than a single individual could contain. His willingness and ability to share his knowledge and experience with anyone showing similar interest has been a gift to many of us.
And now, he has succeeded in committing much of what he is about to print. The book is based on a recent series of articles published in the Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine, entitled: " The Science of Saltwater Fly fishing- Examining the Warmwater World". "Fisherman's Coast" is a gem in that it is not a collection of anecdotes, nor is it a "kiss and tell" series of revelations. It is base of real ecological information about gamefish and how they exist, relate and participate within the fabric of their surroundings and their dependencies and interactions with both their environment, and their fellow denizens of the salt water.
Reading this book to a point of understanding would surely arm the angler with the tools needed to make educated assessments and logical deductions about many saltwater fishing situations. You can take what you need from the volume...... specific information, or a more comprehensive breadth of knowledge. It is sure to become a reference book of great value on your bookshelf.

Fly-Fishing the South Atlantic Coast : Where to Find Game Fish from North Carolina's Outer Banks to the Florida Keys
Jimmy Jacobs Manufacturer: Backcountry Guides ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0881504335 |
Book Description
A guide to the best saltwater fly-fishing along the popular southeast coast, from North Carolina's Outer Banks to the Florida Keys. Saltwater angling is the fastest growing segment of the fly-fishing market and the southeastern Atlantic coast is a prime destination area for saltwater anglers. Many of the game species that feed along these southeast Atlantic waters are legendary--known for their craftiness, beauty, and ability to put up a rugged fight. Anglers seek out species such as the red drum, tarpon, and spotted seatrout with an almost religious zeal. Here is a guide that directs anglers to the precise locations where these game fish are found. An introductory chapter covers the species of fish commonly sought during different seasons, where they school, how they feed, and what gear to use to catch them. Other popular game species in the southeast include redfish, striped bass, and pompano. Further chapters give detailed advice on gear selection and saltwater flies; and explain how to fish the different types of inshore waters found along the southeast coast, from ocean inlets to tidal creeks to oystershell bars. The author has augmented his decades of experience as a saltwater angler by driving 15,000 miles, wading miles of flats, and spending countless hours aboard boats to bring a particular precision to this guide. He concentrates on areas where good fishing is virtually guaranteed, access is easy, and the area is particularly scenic or uncrowded. He has made a special effort to include places that are accessible to wading or shore-bound anglers. Detailed maps of each area make trip planning easy. 50 black and white photographs, 35 maps.Customer Reviews:
