Book Description
This is the story of a man with a dream—as well as the vision and passion to make it come true. The dream was to build a great American links course, one that would contain all the excitement of the famous golfing destinations in Scotland and Ireland, storied places like St. Andrews and Ballybunion. The man was Mike Keiser, an entrepreneur and amateur golf enthusiast, founder of the successful company Recycled Paper Greetings, and Dream Golf is the story of how, with the help of some of the most colorful—and occasionally controversial—men in golf, he transformed a remote area on Oregon's Pacific coast into not one, but three of the most stunning, challenging, and highly ranked courses in the world.
It began modestly, when Mike Keiser decided to build a nine-hole "dunes" course and golf club on the shore of Lake Michigan, near his home in Chicago. The experience prompted him to look further, with the goal of realizing a dream that he had harbored for some time: to bring to American golfers the same kind of experience he had enjoyed while playing some of the legendary courses of the British Isles, "links" courses that had evolved naturally to fit the rugged, heaving coastal terrain. These ancient courses were the antithesis of most modern American courses, where the features were shaped by bulldozers and all too often look sleek, manicured, and artificial.
No, Bandon Dunes would be a "pure" golf experience, pitting the golfer against the elements, allowing the land to dictate the course, banning the use of carts, making the golfer feel at one with both nature and the game. To achieve that goal would take a great amount of planning and hard work, the struggle of man against nature in shaping the land into three courses that would become the Bandon Dunes complex. Conventional wisdom said it was impossible. And even if he built it, would anyone come to this remote Oregon outpost?
Dream Golf is the first complete account of how drive and determination, coupled with the best minds in the game, created a utopian golf experience in a place of breathtaking natural beauty. It is the gripping and compelling account of how one man followed his dream to its greatest conclusion.

A Great Gift For A Golfer.......2007-01-22
We purchased this book for our son for Christmas, and it was a big hit!! He's already finished it and is loaning it out to friends and family. It's a wonderful book for any golfer with a love of the game, whether he/she has been to Bandon Dunes already or is perhaps dreaming of the day....
Great book on golf.......2007-01-03
First let me say that I haven't read this book. I bought it for my husband who never reads books. Never. I gave it to him when we went on vacation so he'd have something to read while laying in the sun. He read every day until he finished it. He kept regaling me with interesting facts and bits of information from the book, and he has recommended it to several friends.
dream golf...indeed!!.......2006-08-28

Book Description
This book reveals the true genius of the Augusta National Golf Club like no other-documenting its original design, chronicling the architectural and design changes over time, and analyzing the philosophies of its creators, Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones. The Augusta National Golf Club will help you understand why the course has a reputation of legendary proportion and how MacKenzie single-handedly changed forever the way courses are built.
Customer Reviews:
Amateurish........2007-10-16
I purchased this book and subsequently returned it. For all of its promise regarding documentation of changes to the course and side-by-side drawings comparing the original holes to the present-day versions, it was a supreme disappointment. I am very knowledgeable on the subject of The Masters and the Augusta National Golf Club, and nothing in this book can't be found in the other four or five exceptional books on the history of the tournament and the golf course. What's more, the diagrams of the holes are not in proportion (i.e., the drawing of the 1934 version of a hole is not drawn in the same scale as the drawing of the present version of the same hole); for a course which has been lengthened by hundreds of yards over 70 years, it would be nice to be able to compare such yardage changes in the side-by-side drawings. As presented, however, each individual drawing is shrunken or enlarged to fit the dimensions of the page, and scale is not considered. The drawings are also clumsily drawn and lettered by hand, which is not aesthetically pleasing in the least and is exceedingly amateurish; given the wide range of easily accessible graphic design software now available, this is inexcusable. I cannot recommend this book. Instead, a purchaser is much better off buying the books by Frank Christian, David Owen, David Sowell, or Charles Price.
Nice Vintage Pictures.......2007-07-10
I actually got to walk out on this course. The Augusta National Golf Club grounds crew (a relative of mine worked there) get to play the course one day a year, on "Play Day" in May. I was the lucky guest of my relative.
No picture book or video can do this course justice. You actually have to be there to see how big and "wavy" some of the hills and greens are. Anyway, this book has a lot of good photos, like the one with Bobby Jones and company standing near what today is the 12th hole. I also like the original hole illustrations set next to illustrations of what the holes look like today.
This is a great book to add to your Masters Collection.
An excellent read with amazing pictures........2006-03-19
This book was an excellent choice for serious golfers. People who love the game of golf love the Augusta National Golf Course and the Masters. The pictures of the holes and of the course make you feel like you are there. You can feel its beauty. It is a geat book to give as a gift.
The star of the Masters: the course.......2005-08-31
Watching the Masters on TV, it is difficult to get a good idea of what the players face. We get overviews of the hole, words of wisdom from past champions, but rarely do we get to look over the holes in any luxury.
Even rarer is a look into how the course has evolved since it first hosted the Augusta National Invitational in 1934. Interestingly, there are holes that have not been touched. Others have gone through some modification, but it is amazing how much of the original design has held up over the years.
This is all revealed between the covers of this wonderful volume. Included are notes on famous Masters moments, but by far the information on the course, its construction, and alterations are of greater value.
If you plan on watching the Masters next year, pick up a copy and have it on hand while you watch. It will make watching the greatest rove over Augusta National that much more a delight.
Rare images of the original course from 1934!!!!.......2005-04-03
This is the most unique book ever done on the Augusta National. The Author, Stan Byrdy, is a local historian and broadcaster, and an Augusta insider! This is an oversized, coffee table, book. It provides amazing historical information and Masters stories, but the best thing about it is the vintage photographs of each of The National's original holes. The book also has yardage-book-style drawings of each original hole (circa 1934), and the modern-day hole -- so you can make side-by-side comaprisons of how each hole has changed over time. The complete architectural history of each hole is also provided!
This is a very important book for the golf fan, and a must-have for everyone interested in the Masters, or the Augusta National Golf Club, Bobby Jones, and Alister MacKenzie.

What I have been waiting for!.......2003-02-06
People in my industry (golf) finally have a "Bible" to refer to when it comes to professional irrigation systems. Laid out in a basic, yet thorough format this book has it all, from good photos to useful charts and glossary. Anyone even considering installing a new system should have this book at their side. I wish I had it when our system was designed and "thrown in the ground" by a purported expert.

Customer Reviews:
All does not read well that starts well and ends well.......2000-08-12
Starts off very well with the hope that it will get more technical but instead becomes more theoretical in areas such as aesthetics and fine art, areas which the author seems to not have a background in. ie, his discussion of perception, symmetry and balance etc. If you can skip the middle chapters its not bad but again I had hoped for more technical insights. Perhaps I needed a book on golf course construction. I just assumed from architecture courses that construction issues and recommendations as well as more detail of layout relative to game play would be discussed.
Amazing!.......1999-10-18
This is one of five best technical books I ever found. As a beginner in golf course design, I found in this book all I needed to realize my projects.
Fascinating,.......1999-10-15
This is a fascinating book for any golf enthusiast or historian, as well as an essential practical resource for anyone actively involved in golf course design, construction and maintenance.
The design process progresses from the green to the individual hole to the entire course. Detailed technical information is well integrated with aesthetic and theoretical concepts making the entire book interesting & readable.
The book is packed with color photos of individual holes to illustrate design concepts, sites under construction and wonderful historical documents. The technical drawings & plans are well done and very useful.
This book is a great example of making a technical manual a joy to read. Any golfer who appreciates the background of the course he or she is playing on will love it.
It makes me want to become an architect.......1999-06-29
This book is filled with wonderful pictures from cover to cover. An incredible collection of the worlds most famous golf courses and designers.
Comprehensive overview of designing and building courses.......1997-12-22
Simply an outstanding look at the fascinating process of taking a piece of land and sculpting a chapmionship layout. A step-by-step process that details the many intricacies and disciplines involved in creating a golf course. Any golfer will more fully appreciate the not only what they see on a course, but also what they "don't" see. The photos and illustrations are plentiful and precise in leading one through each phase of construction. Must reading for an serious student of the game. Kevin Burke

Customer Reviews:
A fellow golf course architect makes comments. .......2004-11-10
Mike Hurdzan's Golf Greens is not an easy read straight through from cover to cover because it is highly technical. But I did it and I'm glad. It searches the subject in far greater depth of detail and pictorially than anyone has ever done before. Great coverage! And it doesn't always simply "sell the conventional line". I learned lots from it, though before thought I was already pretty well experienced in this important matter. I recommend this book to all golf course developers, contractors, maintenance superintendents and other golf course architects for learning much more about golf greens.
Book Description

Book Description
To a majority of the millions of golfers around the world, the subject of golf course design often seems foreign and intimidating. Yet, the overwhelming reason cited for playing golf is an attraction to the beautiful and often ingeniously designed courses where the game is played. Grounds for Golf is distinct from other golf design-related books in that it covers a wide variety of topics in an informative, flowing nar-rative that will interest all golfers. Noted golf writer Geoff Shackel-ford's text is supplemented with photography, classic anec-dotes, famous quotations, and informative hole depic-tions by architect Gil Hanse. Readers finally have a course design primer that adds to their enjoyment of golf's lore while also introducing the fundamentals of golf architecture in an interactive format that will help their games.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book on Course Design.......2007-01-10
Geoff Shackelford is an excellent writer and explains golf course design in simple and yet direct terms. It is a very interesting book for those who have an interest in what makes a well designed golf course.
Why Journalists Shouldn't Design Golf Courses.......2004-10-21
After having read this book, which I thought was pretty good, I looked forward to playing Rustic Canyon.
Wrong! I thought the author "got it", but Rustic Canyon suffers from most of ills discussed in the book.
Talk about not memorable...I was really disappointed.
When the fairways are not framed by rough or trees, when the pancake traps are unseen, when the number of straight holes well out-number the doglegs, its time to go.
Good book, but if Rustic Canyon is any indication of the author's sensibilities, maybe there is better reading out there.
A great book for the uninitiated.......2004-09-07
Books on golf architecture are begining to appear in huge numbers. The interest in golf course architecture, as opposed to only the swing, is something the author will no doubt see as the coming of a new recognition of golf as a thinking sport, rather than the "ape with a club smacking a ball" sport it is devolving into.
This sumarizes the main point the author seeks to make: architecture is important because it is what makes us stop and scratch our head on the course. When we no longer are selecting clubs in order to navigate a course in what appears the best rout for ourselves, and are merely seeking to blast the ball down the fairway as if on a driving range with a hole, architecture and the sport itself is lost.
As is made clear from this, a great deal of lamenting on the state of the game is done between the covers. This may irk a number of readers, particularly those who do not care too much about the professional game, and not obsessed with scores. It may be even more irritating to those who believe the purpose of the game is to hit 300 yard drives on every hole and leave people who can only hit to 200 on the granny tees.
All the woes aside, the book gives what is probably the best introduction to architecture one is likely to find. It covers all the bases: the history of architecture, its various schools, strategic layouts, the basics of course maintanence, and lots of examples of famous holes and layouts to learn from. Some of the holes may have been copied on the courses readers frequent, and may shed some light on how to apporach a hole and why it was designed the way it was.
Aimed more towards the golfer rather than the aspiring architect, it gives the reader everything needed to look anew at the game and the field on which it is played. This will be a particularly useful book for someone with the World Atlas of Golf, as they will be able to see why so many courses have earned their reputations.
Terrific even for nongolfers.......2003-05-23
I bought his book as a gift and then picked it up and found myself reading the whole thing. The book is very accessible and entertaining even for the novice, and the beautiful drawings and great photos perfectly illustrate the author's text. It covers the history and evolution of course design, famous courses, greatest architects and the best holes ever built. Shackelford also details his own experience designing the Rustic Canyon Golf course, so this isn't a dry academic exercise: he knows what he's talking about, and says it with grace and a lot of humor. There are chapters on how to "read" a design, how to daydream your way through redesigning a hole while you're playing a course, and even a chapter that gives you a blank canvas to create your own design. I especially liked the history of St. Andrews Old Course and now understand why that course is so revered. I also liked the way Shackelford used movie and baseball analogies, which made things even clearer. The chapter on the language of architecture gave me a better understanding of golf overall. Now I actually have to try it.
So, that's why playing at the Riviera was so much fun!.......2003-05-12
If you've ever wondered why some golf courses are interesting and fun to play, while others are boring and unsatisfying, you are likely to find the answers in Grounds for Golf. Shackelford brings valuable insights to the subject he calls "the most interactive art form alive." A book on golf course design could get bogged down with technicalities and engineering jargon; instead Grounds for Golf is entertaining, amusing, revealing and written for a wide golfing audience. You will have some "Aha!" moments as you realize that the best course designers, it turns out, aren't trying to punish you or trick you. They are trying to 1. Give you choices (some of which depend on how good a golfer you are or what type personality you are) and 2. Give you a way out or a way back when you make a bad shot. They're on your side, though it sometimes doesn't seem that way. If you are a golfer who gets to play many different courses (through business or vacations) you will find yourself not only beginning to notice the good and bad design aspects of a course, you will also find yourself asking, "Who designed this course?" And you will start seeking out courses designed by good architects in the same way that detective story readers seek out their favorite authors. You will become, painlessly, somewhat of a golf course design expert without having to read all the old classics on the subject. Shackelford has distilled them for you. The book is also liberally sprinkled with quotable quotes, handy for repeating in the appropriate situation. There is a fun "list" section in the back with the author's bests, favorites, etc. Also a good index. I highly recommend this book.

House on the River.......2007-06-27
This book was particularly helpful with orientations toward a particular view. We live on a river and are looking for ideas.
Give me a break.......2007-04-30
Not really homes with a view. Just run of the mill home plans. Save your money!
Disappointed.......2006-03-03
I was looking for house plans that had the major rooms on the front of the house overlooking a view. The title led me to believe I would find that type of home in this book. I did not. Also, most of the plans were very complicated with multiple roof angles and expensive building items.

Great Golf without the Hordes.......2007-01-07
Brian McCallen has given us all a new set of golf destinations to put on our "lists." Rather than send us off to the usual places, we can look foward to visits to New Zealand, PEI, and the "other Ireland."
Anyone can write about what everyone has seen. It takes a special writer to entice you to new places. Brian has done a great job. Nice pics, too.
