Customer Reviews:
Great Information for arthritis sufferers.......2007-09-02
This author has figured out what causes many cases of arthritis. I have osteoarthritis and have been following her recommendations for about a month now. I can already tell a difference in the way I feel. If I cheat, I can really tell the difference the next day. I recommend this book.
Using The Book.......2007-03-26
Book was very organized and as a result was clear. The format of explanation and then giving a plan of action was excellent. The only thing it needed to be a 5 Star was a little more humor.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
A different theory at what causes arthritis, written by someone who generally cured herself. Talks a lot about food sensitivities that cause arthritis and how to figure out what your food sensitivity so you can avoid or reduce your expose thus feel better.
The Type of Arthritis the Author Has Should Be Revealed!.......2007-03-13
I think this is a good book, but unfortunately, the author's type of arthritis (allergic) is not related to rheumatoid arthritis, which is what my husband has. So, basically, I wasted my money on a book we cannot use.
a miracle.......2007-01-20
This book and the ideas expressed in it are nothing short of a miracle. I started having my first hints of RA 11 months ago. It took 3 months of rapidly developing pain in most of my joints until I was finally diagnosed. After the devastating news & realization that the heavy drugs I was on were not having much if any effect I started seeking out alternatives on the internet. That is when I ran across the food/arthritis connection & this book - Conquering Arthritis. It has been nothing short of a miracle. After the week detox I could already bend my fingers which was something I thought I would not do again, I was already convinced. The process of healing is a very long & stressful task. Identifying all my problem foods took 4 - 5 months & it seemed like I would never be able to eat a normal meal. It has been well worth it as now I have no pain from RA. This takes complete dedication & I was amazed at how much strength I had as I went though so many struggles emotionally & physically to be pain free. My motivation was thinking about a miserable future where I couldn't walk & enjoy the outdoors which made the alternative, the temporary struggles of the diet, seem like nothing. I can now make relatively normal meals again with just a few substitutions. I know that at this point I am not completely healed but I am well on my way. It has been a year since my first pains. I have come so far & feel so blessed everytime I go out to take a jog or hike. Barbara Allan has been such a blessing and an inspiration. I am so thankful for this book. I encourage anyone with any kind of arthritis to buy it. It is life changing!

Book Description
Practically every contemporary mainstream scientist presumes that all aspects of mind are generated by brain activity. We demonstrate the inadequacy of this picture by assembling evidence for a variety of empirical phenomena which it cannot explain. We further show that an alternative picture developed by F. W. H. Myers and William James successfully accommodates these phenomena, ratifies the common sense view of ourselves as causally effective conscious agents, and is fully compatible with contemporary physics and neuroscience.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2007-05-01
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the "mind-body" or more precisely, "mind-brain" problem. It is quite an undertaking at close to 700 pages of writing but in my opinion it was well worth the effort. The authors did well in providing a contextual history and background for those not familiar with the field of psychology and its history.
The main premise is that mainstream psychology has not yet provided a satisfactory theory of mind. Particularly, the relation of mind to brain has been largely ignored because it has been dominated by a purely materialistic view of the brain which posits that consciousness is generated by processes occurring purely in the brain. The objective of the book is to "provide justification for revisiting the broader and deeper framework of psychology" and the authors use the contributions of F.W.H. Myers, in particular his book Human Personality (1903), as a guide. The first chapter of the book provides relevant background in modern cognitive science. The next chapter summarizes the contributions of Myers to empirical investigation of the mind-body relation which provides the framework for the rest of the book.
The authors state that much of the available empirical evidence (such as that of psi phenomena) is ignored because it is assumed a priori impossible and caution that scientists must look at all the relevant facts, not just those compatible with current mainstream theory. They argue that it is precisely the valid scientific evidence that seems to conflict with current theory that should "commend the most urgent attention." The authors state that, "...in order to get an adequate scientific account of the mind we must be prepared to take seriously all relevant data and to modify as necessary even our most fundamental theoretical ideas." A variety of specific empirical phenomena and aspects of mental life that have not been able to be understood in the current "physicalist conceptual framework" are identified and discussed in detail and make up the bulk of the book. These include: psychophysiological influences, memory, automatism, near death experiences and related phenomenon, genius, and mystical experiences. I must admit that I was one of those scientists who criticized the data supporting so called `anomalous experiences' (e.g., NDEs, OBEs, psi phenomenon, psychophysiological influences, etc.) a priori without actually researching the available scientific evidence. After reading the extensive summaries of empirical evidence provided in this book my viewpoint has certainly changed. It is obvious that there is a wide variety of evidence supporting these various phenomena and this is certainly an area of research that has been greatly neglected by modern day scientists.
In the final chapter, "Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century", the authors re-assess Myer's theory of human personality and provide a summary of implications of the evidence provided in this book for future research and psychological theory. They urge that psychology should return to the central problem of mind and utilize technological and methodological advances to further study in this field. They point out that most of Myer's theoretical ideas and the empirical phenomena used to support them are still valid today and have not been "disproven but simply displaced." The authors also point out some of the weaknesses in Myer's approach and provide discussions regarding opportunities for further investigation. It is pointed out that the relevance of quantum-theoretic considerations to brain research has not been recognized and research in this area should be pursued and a short discussion on how contemporary quantum physics and neuroscience could support a new theory of the mind is provided. They also briefly describe the theoretical directions in which they believe psychology should go in order to develop a more comprehensive theory of mind-brain interaction that incorporates all the relevant aspect of present-day science.
For those intrigued by the empirical evidence presented in the book and eager to read more, the authors includes a great Appendix listing serious literature sources with respect to psychical research. A perusal of the "Reference" section also leads to many great sources of information that are available for further reading.
This is a serious science book and hopefully it will inform young scientists that there is much yet to be learned about the mind and that there are vast areas of research, that have largely been ignored, that should be pursued if we are ever going to be able to develop a proper theory of the mind. As the authors state, scientists should not a priori ignore such empirical evidence because it does not fit within their current theoretical model. Hopefully, this book will encourage scientists to look more closely at the available evidence and promote future research into these much neglected areas.
Brilliantly Insightful and Destined to be an Instant Classic.......2007-01-10
I think that it was Carl Sagan who said, "You want to be open-minded, but not so open-minded that your brains fall out." This marvelous book shows that open-mindedness is entirely compatible with scientific rigor.
For the last century, the vast majority psychologists, psychiatrists and neuroscientists have believed that thoughts, emotions and consciousness are the product of physical processes in the brain. Just recently the editor of popular psychology magazine expressed the opinion that the whole of human behavior could be reduced to reflexes.
This book provides comprehensive and detailed empirical proof that this reductive, materialistic belief is not just incomplete but false. Sagan also said that extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence and this book is full of it. But far from being a catalogue, each piece of evidence and every idea is examined critically.
The book is broken into nine sections followed by an introductory bibliography of psychical research and exactly one hundred pages of references.
Chapter 1: A View from the Mainstream: Contemporary Cognitive Neuroscience and the Consciousness Debates
Chapter 2: F. W. H. Myers and the Empirical Study of the Mind-Body Problem
Chapter 3: Psychophysiological Influence
Chapter 4: Memory
Chapter 5: Automatism and Secondary Centers of Consciousness: - Chapter 6: Unusual Experiences Near Death and Related Phenomena
Chapter 7: Genius
Chapter 8: Mystical Experience
Chapter 9: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century
It begins with a short history of 20th-century psychology from behaviorism to present-day cognitive neuroscience. This section emphasizes the inability of these theories to account for many important aspects of mind and consciousness.
We then move to an introduction to the work of Frederick Myers the 19th-century English psychologist whose work supported the view -echoed throughout this book - that the mind is not generated by the brain but is instead limited and constrained by it.
The next sections present critical reviews of a number of highly reproducible and familiar phenomena including the placebo response, stigmata and hypnotic suggestion. Though well known they demonstrate the influence of mental states on the body. We then move into some less familiar phenomena including some of those produced by yogis and distant influences on living systems. This step-by-step approach is very appealing and leads us to the inescapable conclusion that many of these phenomena are simply inexplicable using a reductionist, materialist approach to the mind and the brain.
The book presents a strong critique of the notion that memories are ONLY potentiated pathways in the brain. Later sections discuss such disparate topics as memories that survive physical death, near death experiences, automatic writing and out-of-body experiences, apparitions and deathbed visions. I have only a minor quibble about the inclusion of multiple personality disorder, which is controversial and the evidence for it not strong.
There are some very strong sections on super-normal states and a good critique of some recent attempts to reduce altered states of consciousness - including experiences induced by prayer and meditation - to brain processes. The authors rightly point out many of the limitations of the approach.
This is an astonishing book that I hope will be widely read despite weighing in at around 800 pages.
I put it in the same class as Michael Murphy's The Future of the Body, Ken Wilber's Sex, Ecology and Spirituality and the less well-known Nature of Consciousness by Jerry Wheatley.
Very highly recommended.

The Absolute BEST Motivation!!.......2000-08-29
I got this book ten years ago, and have been weight training/bodybuilding ever since. With assistance from this book, I found it was easier to change my body (from size 18 pants to size 8) than my mind. The pep talk at the beginning of the book really changed my life. I feel much better about myself now. When people ask me how I keep at it, I recommend this book, and am buying yet another copy for a friend who's gotten a new gym membership, to keep her motivated!
Fantastic for beginning body builders.......1998-07-24
This book has done wonders for me. I started out not knowing anything about different exercises for weight training and how to start a program. Now I am working out at least 4-5 times a week and loving every minute of it. I saw results quickly and the pictures helped me understand how to do the exercises correctly. This is a must!!! I would love to see more books from the two lady authors.
Very informitive for the novice.......1998-01-04
This is a great book to learn different weight lifting exercises. The pictures show alot. The book could use more instruction on nutrition.
BEAUTIFUL BODIES.......1997-03-17
I looked into the mirror and realised that my latest diet was again a failure. Arrgh! Although I had lost the weight that I wanted to, I was looking more like a pyramid than the hour glass I imagined. I finally realised that it wasn't how heavy we were, but how the weight was distributed inside and outside of us that mattered.
"Hard Bodies" is the answer. This book, written by Gladys Portugues and Joyce Vedral, PhD., is a path to a healthier, better looking body. Working with free weights at home is inexpensive and takes very little space. However, it does require careful attention to technique. The book's photos are instructive rather than just showing off the author's success at body building, although Gladys is beautiful, definitely someone to emulate. The text provides clear and safe instructions.
This is great stuff for working out with free weights at home or for augmenting a weight training program at your gym. And, it works!

Rock Solid.......2007-09-07
I love reviewing weight lifting books and of many I have read, I found this one to be good for anyone who wants to get their body in better shape- manly because it covers all the basics.
The book starts out with a little muscle anatomy and physiology and then goes on to talk about warm-ups and cool-downs, and other pertinent info such as basic stretching.
Then comes the heart of the book, the workouts, which are divided into beginning, intermmediate, and advanced routines. The best part? The workouts are all in pictures, laid out easily for anyone to get a clear understanding of what all they are going to do. A section is also included on personalizing the plans to meet individual needs.
Chapters on workouts for specific body parts follow. For example, there's a chapter on chest, shoulders, etc. And, within each of these chapters, are sections for beginner, intermmediate, and advanced lifters. To boot, they even give you exercises using free weights, machines, or even no weight. The book then finishes with info on how to eat smart and talks about the "hard body diet."
A complete package, especially for the beginner who doesn't know where to start, this easy to follow volume will be valuable to anyone who wants to get in better overall shape. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you can't lift weights because of a rotator cuff or shoulder problem.
Great Book!.......2007-09-02
The book is just what I was looking for! It was a gift for a friend and they love it!
Great guide for those without a lot of time or options!.......2007-06-21
If anyone looking at this book is like me, you know you don't always have time to work out (active duty military, married, taking classes). So while being deployed i ordered this book, and the one thing i noticed is this plan gives you plenty of options to customize the workouts to your lifestyle! Don't like free weights? it has plenty of options with machines. Can't get to the gym today? It has exercises without weights that you can knock out anytime you're not busy. Anyone knows that training isn't going to do jack squat for you if you're not eating right, this book breaks down exactly what nutrients you should be taking in and the right amounts, you'd be suprised with the crazy theories i've heard about nutrition outside the weight room! The feature i like most about this is the isolation chapters. One chapter lists over 30 sports, and what kind of exercises you should focus on to excel at (without neglecting the rest of your body of course). Also, with the "Quick set path to power", you can customize your workouts to target specific parts of the body, to include arms, shoulders, abs, legs, etc. In conclusion, if you're a serious trainer, and you've been lifting for years, you probably won't find too much useful in here, but you never know, you may find the one element you've been missing the whole time! If you're starting out or are a generally seasoned trainer, this is a great book for when your routines are getting dull and you find yourself with less and less time! Great read, definitely worth the time!

Customer Reviews:
Worked for me.......2007-07-18
I am a fairly active guy, age 28, who works out a few times a week and is fairly strong (5'8'' bench max ~300) I decided to try this program as my body wasn't looking as young any more.
The book is clear and he presents the reasoning behind the workout and the diet very clearly. He advocates using the most common performance supplements (glutamine, creatine, whey protein, and maltodextrin) as well as multivitamins and minerals. I followed the diet about 65-75%. I drank a sports drink during the workouts for the first time, took protein supplements before and after most workouts as directed, took the creatine supplement as directed, and occasionally took a glutamine supplement. I opted out on the maltodextrin, as I'm concerned that I might be developing hypoglycemia. (This was per recommendations in the book). I instead substituted sugars that digest slightly slower.
The cost of my supplementation including vitamins was about 40-50$ per month.
I followed the workout schedule fairly religiously (90-95% adherence). The workout definitely made me feel stronger. Sprint workouts are hard on the older body, especially a massive one, and I did have some knee joint problems despite doing all of the warm ups as directed. The workout calls for 4 sprint workouts per week, and I've realized after doing the workout that I can only reasonably handle 2-3.
Still, all told, I gained 10-12 lbs while becoming trimmer and 10-15% stronger, despite being in decent shape when I started. I would recommend this book and program to anyone who is serious about seeing results.
Easy Read.......2007-04-09
This book is Amazing and so easy to read and comprehend. Mackie Shilstone is a great fitness guru. I haven't completed the program just yet, but am very excited so far. If you want something (like I did) that is all laid out for you i.e. workout, suplements, and nutrition this is the book. I'll add more to this after I have completed the program, until then get this book.

For All Ages.......2006-12-31
I found this book to be written in a simple, straightforward manner that applies to all ages.
I especially liked the chapter on supporting those who are in a state of grief. The book is beautifully written and uplifting for all ages. My wife of 33 years recently died and this book gave me more aid and solace than the more sophisticated writings recommended by my grief support group.
I would advise any person from adult teen to older adult to purchase this book.

I work with grieving teens and whenever possible, I give them a copy of this book. Every page has a gem that can help them sort through their feelings and experiences. All of the children have told me this book really helps them. It is written in large print with pictures, poems, and sayings throughout making it extremely accessible for a grieving teen (or adult, for that matter). It is one of the very best books written for grieving teens. I recommend it highly.
Thank you to Earl Hipp.......2000-05-18
I just wanted you to know that both my teens have read your book, "Help for the Hard Times". It was the only book on loss that really made them feel like it spoke to their true feelings. I can't thank you enough for writing such a wonderful book. I am recently widowed, and until I discovered your book, I was desperately searching. I bought an extra copy and donated it to my school district. I am a MSW graduate student at Fordham University. I eventually hope to work in the public school system. You can bet your book will be on the shelf along with my other resources.
Great for adults too!.......1999-01-13
I recently read the book, Help for the Hard Times, Getting Through Loss." I am a divorced mother of two great kids 13 and 18. I was divorced after 21 years of marriage. I went looking for a book I could give to my kids to help hem deal with their own issues of loss revolving around the divorce. I went through my own hard times, and in fact am just now after 3 years reaching the healing times. Unfortunately, my kids grief is just now showing up in ways that until now went unrecognized by them or me. I have to say that this book was very enlightening to me and therefore just can't loose with my kids. I will read it together with my 13-year-old, and give it to my 18-year-old to read on her own. This kind of nuts and bolts help can be very helpful to people of all ages, not just the kids. Sometimes we have to go back to the basics in order to heal an overloaded loss pot, and recognizing the stages is a great start.

The stakes are suddenly raised when a student at her fencing school ends up dead. As Wolfe and sidekick Archie thrust and parry into a tangle of documents, identities, and political intrigue, another fencing student is killed. Customer Reviews:
Confound it, another great Wolfe novel.......2007-06-03
Over My Dead Body is the seventh in the Nero Wolfe series. A young lady claiming to be Wolfe's adopted daughter from Yugoslavia asks for his help with a charge of stealing diamonds but this quickly evolves into a situation where she is suspected of murder. The case frustrates Wolfe no end, it gets more complicated all the while, but of course he manages to uncover the solution by the end of the story.
This book is a prime example of a Nero Wolfe novel. Archie Goodwin is in top form as a wise cracking pain-in-the-neck. Inspector Cramer is present more than a lot of stories giving Goodwin plenty of opportunities for zingers besides the ones he routinely fires at Wolfe. Wolfe himself is definitely out of his comfort zone dealing with the situation of his adopted daughter and this also adds to the potential for laughs.
This is a very entertaining book and I would recommend it for readers unfamiliar with Nero Wolfe as a great place to start or for established fans.
First rate Nero Wolfe.......2007-06-02
This book hits on all cylinders. The plot is excellent, intricate but clear. The characters are well drawn. The atmosphere, New York on the eve of World War II, is almost palpable. The dialogue is perfect. I'm at a loss as to what else to say about the book except, "Read it."
A Britsh undercover agent is murdered at a Manhattan fencing school, skewered by an epee with a gizmo attached that turns it into a weapon sans blunt end. Yugoslav women who are instructors there are possible suspects, one of whom is Nero Wolfe's adopted daughter from his days as an ill advised Austrian agent in the Balkans, pre World War, before we started numbering them. This alone is a startling revelation about Wolfe. Wolfe slender? Youthful? Abroad, outside, involved with people? I was astonished.
As usual, the beer drinking, orchid collecting, erudite, corpulent food lover Nero Wolfe declines, under any circumstances, to leave his brownstone abode with a greenhouse rooftop for his rare flowers. Using Archie, his assistant, as legs, Wolfe solves the baffling case. I knew he would. He's solved all the other mysteries in the Nero Wolfe books I've read.
Mystery fans who have not read mysteries from the golden age (pre-1950) do not know what they are missing. There is no sex to lure the lascivious reader, very little violence, no profanity. What there is (and this book is an excellent example of the sub-genre) is intelligence.
That's a rare commodity in most modern mysteries.
We Meet Wolfe's Daughter.......2006-05-10
In this Nero Wolfe mystery-one of the earlier episodes-we encounter Wolfe's adopted daughter, who is in a bit of a fix. Wolfe comes to the rescue and along the way, shares little glimpses into his past: his tumultuous youth in Europe; the origins of his suspicion of all women; how he came to adopt a child. In this book, probably more than any other in Rex Stout's series, do we see the effect that women-especially those from the former nation of Yugoslavia-have upon Wolfe's psyche. It's a good read-a good mystery with a great plot-like pretty much all of Stout's works.
Hvale Bogu!.......2004-10-09
This is, at once, one of the best books in the series and one which translated brilliantly to TV on the A&E series.
Rex Stout decides to deal us a little shock in this one: Nero Wolfe, woman-hater, has a daughter he's not seen since she was a baby. She comes from Yugoslavia to New York, unknown to her pops, and gets into a real tight spot involving murder by "coldymort."
When Archie learns this, he considers resigning on the basis of his boss's morals. You just have to read this one to find out.
Or, again, buy the A&E series - they did a great job here.
Classic Nero Wolfe.......2003-11-14
Having read just about all of the Nero Wolfe series, I have to say, this one contains all of the elements that make Rex Stout's detective novels wildly entertaining, without most of the elements that make some of them maddening
In this mystery, the utterly unswashbuckling Wolfe is revealed, in his younger, svelter days, to have been quite a romantic. Not only did he fight on the anti-Imperial side in Montenegro during the Great War, but he adopted and may even have actually sired a young girl.
To his shock, this young Yugoslav maiden--whom he had lost track of--reappears in his life, up to her neck in a particularly messy, intricate affair that may or may not include missing diamonds, a dead body or two, international intrigue, and a bellboy's uniform. For all of the peeks into Wolfe's previously unsuspected soul, he remains as crumudgeonly and as immovable as ever. Archie Goodwin, of course, remains the wisecracking, milk-drinking sidekick, flirting with anything in a skirt and even giving a Nazi agent a black eye just for the fun of it.
The joy of these books is their marriage of the American gumshoe attitude and the British cozy focus on character. Where they generally fall short is their plotting. This entry in the series is, without a doubt, the most successfully rounded out of the lot. Stout manages to keep the mystery truly mysterious, and yet never manages to confuse the reader so thoroughly that s/he can't find the exit. The plot actually ends on the last page--many of the Nero Wolfe mysteries fizzle out, wrapping up a chapter or two before the end, leaving nothing but rumination and grumbling for the final pages. Others seem never quite to wrap up all the loose ends. Here, the conclusion is both inevitable and unexpected--utterly satisfying.

Olivia Dale is making a name for herself on the crime beat at a Memphis newspaper. Her byline means everything to her, and the 24-year-old has cultivated a tough veneer to get her scoops. But that veneer is as fragile as blown glass. The brutal rape and murder of Allison Avery, a charismatic young singer whose life holds, and casts, dark shadows, shatters Olivia's hard- won calm. The remaining question: will it shatter her life as well? Olivia both capitalizes on and privately regrets the enforced voyeurism of her profession. Always on the margin, always watching, always chronicling the lives of others, she wonders what her own life might be missing:
People are like those nested Russian dolls. There's always someone else hiding inside the person you think you know, layer after layer, each with the same painted face. I want to open someone up and hold that last solid little doll in my hand. I know all of Allison Avery's disguises, femme fatale, loyal friend, maternal and corrupting sister, virginal obedient daughter, performer, alive with the magic of her own touch. But who was she at the center? I don't know if I believe in the soul. I'm afraid of the darkness I see in all of us, every one of us a mystery. I have looked in the mirror and not been certain that I saw myself.
As she picks through the contradictory remains of Allison's existence, however, Olivia falls helplessly under Allison's spell. Her quest to discover the truth behind her death slides into an eerie exercise in doubling, as Olivia begins to mimic the singer in thought, word, and deed. Where will Olivia draw the line between self and subject in her terrifying plunge from distance to immediacy? And will it be the merging, or the separating, that carries the greatest risks?
Body of a Girl is at once atmospheric, erotic, and deeply disturbing. So effective is Leah Stewart at capturing the sultry heat of a Memphis summer that the pages practically sweat. It is well-paced and tautly plotted, visceral and gripping. Stewart has mercilessly sketched the potential emptiness at the core of the self, and in doing so has given psychological suspense fans a name to appreciate now and welcome in the future. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
In Memphis, where the heat clings heavy like a second skin, it has been a summer of murders. Olivia Dale's job as a novice crime reporter is at once surreal-stepping in and out of strangers' lives with her notebook-and all too real. As she looks down on the twisted body of a young woman who has been kidnapped and gruesomely killed, she wonders if she could have been that girl. After all, as she chases the story, she discovers that Allison Avery-so all-American, so like Olivia in age and looks-was just like her except wilder. Drawn deep into the shadows and secrets of Allison's life, Olivia becomes caught up in exploring her own wild side and finds herself seduced by a perilous world where her life may be in danger. Hypnotic, compelling, and gorgeously written, Body of a Girl is a summer must-read.

Chilling.......2006-03-24
Leah Stewart is a talented writer. I read this book after finishing her most recent novel, The Myth of You and Me (which I highly recommend). This story is dark and chilling. Olivia is a young reporter covering crimes in Memphis on a hot summer. When the body of girl is found, the case becomes eerily personal for Olivia and the lines between professional duty and personal struggles become blurred as she gets deeper into the murdered girl's story and life. The characters in this novel are deep and well developed, and the sultry atmosphere of a hot summer in Memphis is well rendered. I highly recommend this book.
Left me wanting more . . . .......2005-07-19
Body of a Girl is dubbed as a cross-genre literary/ mystery novel. I personally hate labels and peoples' need to categorize everything into neat little categories. Screw that I say. Body of a girl is quite simply a well-written, novice newspaper-reporter-turned-sleuth novel. It is a story of a young journalist--motivated as much as she is naive--beginning her career (ironically paralleling the author's life, in some sense) and trying to remain true to who she is among a seedy, often cruel and corrupt world. And like the author's true life symbolically mirrors that of the main character, so does our main character spend much of the novel peering into the looking glass of the victim's life who eerily also mirrors her own; and, hence, we have a tridimensional dynamic in the deep, deep underlying machinations of this literary work which (for me) gave it real substance and made for an undeniably genuine and fulfilling read.
On a lighter note, I really enjoyed the precise prose, even pacing, well-developed characters, sweltering setting, and most importantly: the author's willingness to take risks. What makes this novel really shine is the author's willingness to give us a main character who takes chances and assumes risks that catch us completely off guard. I often found myself saying, "No way she is going to do that." And, sure enough, she did. This however, is also my main gripe. I think the author needs to continue taking risks! Body of a Girl looked to be the beginning of a special journey into a darker, rawer realm of confronting one's own desires, fears and deep internal thoughts: the dialogue we hear and let run rampant in our daydreams but do not dare share publicly. I felt a crack of this door opening and saw a splay of light fantastically beginning to shine through . . . I've waited and eagerly hoped to continue such a journey in the author's next novel; however, seeing as the next book is about relationships. . . (needless to say)I am very disapointed. On a positive note, I will read and buy the Myth of You and Me--and I am sure I will be able to enjoy it for what it is; or so I hope. But I probably will never stop wondering what could have been, where and what direction a second novel in a series could have gone: it certainly would have been somewhere unique and compelling, in a land not of categories--but a new land existing between the files, surely outside of the genre box. Maybe, maybe we will be so lucky with novel three.
Stroll Down the Humid, Sultry, Mean Streets Of Memphis!.......2004-05-11
A 25-year old fledging ace crime newpaper reporter seeks the answers to a night time street murder of a multi-faceted young lady with a surprising resemblance to the reporter herself. Our intrepid narrator meets about every type, from frustrated lovers, drugged out kid brothers, very good local police, and a lot more. And in this case, the police do a fine job in crime solving, a nice change from many novels of the genre. A fine atmospheric job you'll read thru to the end! My only quibble..Is it that easy to enter the apartment of a murder victim?
Strong Debut.......2003-04-03
I really enjoyed this book. It was one of few I looked forward to while at work. Leah Stewart did a wonderful job of creating believable characters and a suspenseful plot, while also brilliantly conveying the atmosphere of it's setting - Memphis. This is my favorite book of it's kind since Mystic River, and I look forward to more from this author.
Good book, not enough ending.......2002-09-26
I really liked reading this book. It took a while to get into, but once you knew who everyone was and what they were doing, it really sped along. I am curious more about what Olivia is like, not only that she thinks a lot about her job, but other things, like how she acts and looks. David also seems "not involved". I liked most of the book, but the ending could use some work. I was really curious what would have happened after. The epilogue was strage. I guess it's a lot of things to handle for a 13 year old girl like myself, :-). This is a great book, it would make a good movie too. I couldn't stop reading it!

WITTY AND CUTE. AMEN.......2003-04-04
Holy hosannas! Praise the word of the Lord ... and have a few hearty chuckles at the same time. Mary and David Compton's teeny tome is a sequel to their first compendium of roadsign church signs cross America. In this pocket-sized pal, they have gathered more sources of unexpected wisdom; witty, thought-provoking marquee messages that inspire and amuse. Consider it a most "soulful" slice of Americana. There are close to 400 messages. Our top 3 faves: "THOSE WHO THROW DIRT, LOSE GROUND;" "BODY PIERCING SAVED MY LIFE" and "LIFE IS MORE FUN IF YOU DON'T KEEP SCORE." Our biggest problem is that the Comptons don't attribute the messages ... which makes us pray that these phrases were actually found in their travels --- and are not acts of sales-inspired sin.

Customer Reviews:
Great how-to book!.......2005-02-16
This book is great if you're looking for beneficial exercises you can do in the comfort of your home with minimal equipment. I had never used an exercise ball , so I was pleasantly surprised with the fun and intensity this added to my workouts. I have yet to see what the program does long term, but I have to say overall the book is excellent for exercise instruction and even motivational purposes. The only beef I have is that the nutritional segment is really not even a blip on the radar. I guess I was hoping for more in-depth information than just youarewhatyoueat and one sample menu . Other than that, I'm glad I bought the book!
almost perfect.......2005-02-07
A fun and motivational book with great advice. Mark Jenkins' personal story is inspiring and the text is easy to read and understand. However, there is a glaring error in the section on how to calcualte your percent body fat.
First, the equation for women doesn't work because of a typo - multiply your body weight by 0.732, NOT .0732 as the text says. Second, the resulting number is your lean body mass and not your percent body fat, as the example in the book states. There is no additional info on how to use lean muscle mass number to calculate your percent body fat. This is just lousy fact checking - the rest of the book is great and as long as you move the decimal point, you'll get a usable number.
You can also use this easy online calculator, just plug in your measurements:
http://www.am-i-fat.com/body_fat_percentage.html
Good luck!
Are you ready to get fit? .......2005-01-17
"THE JUMP OFF" is a book that is uplifting for all ages of adult life.
I'm a senior and I appreciate what this book says about the efforts you refine as you gain a hard body. Mark Jenkins is brilliant to show his past and present life. He explains how important it is to focus on what your goals are, as he helps to teach you to take control over your body.
I like this book for all my associates because we all want to look and feel our best. His examples and pictures and hard facts are tried and true. On page 110, Mark gives excellent advice for those to remember about survival in the great outdoors.
From cover to cover he takes you "Outside the Box", back to your mind, and being "what you eat". I am excited again for me, staying in shape, and delighted for the millions to get a copy of his book now.
Remember, this author has helped himself, and celebrities, and now he will share Body awareness with the world!
