Book Description

During the last decade, the martial arts world has looked to innovative mixed martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship to determine which fighting style is the best. These contests have repeatedly shown the grappling style of martial arts, headed by Brazilian jiu-jitsu, to dominate. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu style stems from the premise, garnered from analysis of actual street fights, that the outcome of any fight is decided on the ground. While most martial arts deal only with the initial punching and kicking stages of combat, Brazilian jiu-jitsu concentrates on ground combat. This guide shows how to use Brazilian jiu-jitsu to increase combat effectiveness. Photographs and step-by-step instructions show how to master the techniques used in this exciting new form of combat.

4 out of 5 stars Resurection of the Gracie Gift.......2007-07-05

Overall i think the book is very good and worth buying. However there are a few baffling decision made by the authors in the book. Escape from half guard for instance, where much is made of how common a position it is, and then they include it in the Black belt syllabus?? I would have had it in the blue belt section, personally, seeing as it is so commonly used. Also the Gracies continue to churn out the very useless standard guard pass in this book, a pass nobody in their right mind would try and use if their opponent has even heard of the triangle choke. Surely they could have put a more useful guard pass in? To their credit at least they mention its limitations. (Unlike Rorions instruction video!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and to the point.......2007-06-21

I liked the step by step narative with pictures. I liked how the art is explained in the first few chapters. The writers didnt talked over my head and it was easy enough to understand. I get a distinct feeling that the Gracie family actually cares that this art is passed along correctly, which shows in this book. Not alot of "extra" garbage, They get to the point and do a great job of teaching it.

Being a student of BJJ, I found this very helpful in understanding the art and the techniques presented. Well Done.

Product Description

The Guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don’t end just because they hit the ground. For the jiu jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques key to success for ground fighting. Author Joe Moreira reveals secrets of his guard technique developed and refined over his thirty five years studying and teaching martial arts. In this volume he shares the fundamentals of his jiu jitsu, the specific details needed to make it work, and technique ranging from beginning to advanced. The philosophy in this book and of Moreira teaching style is that it is better to understand groups of moves/options from given positions, than isolated moves. This is an exposition of sequences of moves from specific situations, not a collection of random moves. The Guard shows not only how to attack or defend from a position but also how to respond to an opponent’s likely reactions. Continuing in the model of Grappling Arts Publications first volume, Passing the Guard, The Guard provides a revolutionary approach in its visual presentations. Techniques are shown from multiple angles. Key points are illustrated. Photo sequences are laid out in intuitive easy to follow patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-05-12

Aside from the guidence of instructors Tyrone Glove and Mike Fowler, I've used this book and lots of excerpts [...]to help me visualize my guard attack; which has become pretty nasty for a white belt. I review the very detailed illustrations in this book on a regular basis, and use the front and back blank white pages as a diary of subs I've gotten and new techniques learned. I love to pull and attack from guard, with the help of good flexibility and regular yoga, I plan a more detailed study of Eddie Bravos material on rubber guard and attacks from half and full guard. This book was the first place I started though, and I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars A must for BJJ players.......2007-04-10

Excellent! This and Passing the Guard are very well done. I think they may have used too much space sometimes for drills that are simplistic (e.g. p.28-29, 32 pics showoing Moriera spinning his legs?). But the detail, as in the first, is better than I have seen in any Bjj book. The Gracies should take note. With the exception perhaps of Rodrigo's Path to Black Belt and Peligro's The Essential Guard.

5 out of 5 stars In Depth Treatment of Guard, for Intermediate Grapplers (with Gi).......2007-01-17

As with "Passing the Guard", no other book focuses on the bjj guard so much, with so much details. The paper is cheaper and the pictures are darker than those in the first volume ("Passing the Guard"), but the page count increased and the content is still high guality, if not higher.

I'm a bjj blue belt and I like this book a lot, but it's not an easy book to use. You have to study it, choose the techniques that fit your style and don't get lost in all the material. It's easy to loose focus with such huge work.

If you are not an experienced grappler, and your guard game is still fragmented, I suggest you to buy and study "The Essential Guard" first (for at least 3-6 months). After you have mastered the fundamental skills, you will get a lot more from "The Guard".

5 out of 5 stars The best by far........2006-07-16

After viewing many jiu-jitsu books and videos I find the Joe Moreia's teaching technique is the best understood and when applied correctly make you a force to be reckoned with on the mat.

5 out of 5 stars Well Thought Out and Presented.......2006-04-01

This book is certainly worth the money and is a great study of the guard position. The authors are thorough and systematic in their coverage of the guard.

Some chapters are based on the specific position that your opponent is assuming while in your guard and this is very helpful in planning your repetoire.

The level of detail is tremendous and this book should be read with pen and paper at some point so you can decide which techniques fit well into your style. The section on "flowing attack" offers combinations and this section alone is almost worth the price of the book.

There is a large amount of pictures and often there are different views of the same technique. Also, they have so many pictures to describe what is happening in only a few seconds that sometimes it can be less than optimal as far as a teaching tool.

My only complaints are that sometimes they go over board with the number of pictures per technique and the descriptions while usually good sometimes leave a little to be desired (e.g. they say "shift the hips" but you can't tell which way). Also, some of the tecniques are for GI ONLY so that's something to be aware of. Finally, I don't understand why they put out such a good book but forget to do a spell check...there are a few errors here and there and some are real obvious.

Book Description

This array of bottom-fighting strategies is specifically designed to not only protect practitioners from being hit in any situation, but also to help them defeat bigger, stronger opponents. Exclusively focusing on the bottom game—a position in which most fighters feel vulnerable—this resource teaches students of jiu-jitsu and mixed–martial arts fighting how to develop hidden strengths and exploit the advantages of this seemingly weak position. With details and important information never before shown outside the Gracie family, the authors explore the techniques, tactics, and mindset necessary to win when fighting from the bottom—whether in an official sports jiu-jitsu competition or simply sparring with a partner.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book to increase your grappling skills.......2007-09-09

This is another great book by Royce Gracie. Unlike some other books written by the Gracie family this book focuses on knowledge and technique to be good at grappling and not just on strength. The book is full of hundreds of great techniques that really work quite well. I go to jujitsu class every day with a new technique and I keep frustrating my fellow classmates with my new knowledge. This book, and Royce's first book, are a must have for anyone that wants to increase their skill in grappling without having to hit the gym five days a week in the hopes of being strong enough to using some "fancy looking" move. On a scale of 10, I would give this book a 9.5!

5 out of 5 stars Great encyclopedia of techniques.......2007-07-24

This book follows the pattern of the first volume. It is a great reference tool for the bottom position. About the second half of the book are moves from the guard while the first half is a mix of the other bottom positions. Its a great book!

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Jiu-Jitsu.......2007-07-18

If you want to improve your jiu-jitsu game through the use of books, there are three you should read. The first is Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 1 - a book that details the basics such as clinching and fighting from the top. The second is Gracie Submission Essentials by Helio and Royler Gracie - a book that is completely focused on submissions from almost every imaginable position. The third is this book, and I have found it to be the most useful for improving my skills.

_Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 2: Fighting from the Bottom_ reveals what you should do when you are fighting from positions that are considered "disadvantaged" - that is, positions where your back is generally on the mat. If you intend to compete in a grappling tournament, you WILL find yourself in these positions eventually. The knowledge in this book could very well be the difference between you having to submit to an opponent and you being able to reverse positions and submit them. Do you know how to escape the side mount without being choked out or submitted via kimura? Can you break the mounted choke? Can you do a half-guard sweep? If the answer to any of these questions is NO, then you need to study this book.

This book contains 304 pages. All of the "disadvantaged" positions are covered in this book; however, the primary focus is on the back, mounted, side control, and guard positions. The techniques are broken down step-by-step and include numerous photographs to make learn them on your own relatively easy.

Note: While this book is titled _Ultimate Fighting Techniques_, it is primarily Gi-Brazilian Jiu-jitsu focused. Most of the techniques will translate to MMA/UFC-style fighting (and there are some MMA-specific techniques included), but that is not the focus of the work. For a more-specific MMA texts, try B.J. Penn's _Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge_ or _Bas Rutten's Big Book of Combat_.

5 out of 5 stars BJJ Guy.......2007-05-04

This book is extremely good. IMO it is even better than the first one. Definitely it is more advanced than Royler and Renzo's BJJ Theory and Technique, which is a good book and a complete guide of techniques. This book has a lot of stuff which other books are missing such as defenses and several options for each defense, which I find to be priceless. On the theory portion of the book, it is too brief and almost the same things as the first book, so there's nothing new to it, but regarding the techniques shown, they are excellent. The explanations are very clear and very articulated, something which is extremely important for anyone learning BJJ.

Book Description

No Gi, No Fear, No Prisoners!

The fastest-growing martial art in the world is submission grappling, a style that sheds formal rules like old clothing and allows combatants to get down to the pure physics of fighting: two men, no gis, one winner. Whether it is in no-holds-barred events like the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride, or in the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championships, submission grappling is the style that the world's greatest athletes are using to pit themselves against one another and determine who reigns supreme. It can be considered the ultimate evolution of the martial arts.

The greatest successes in submission grappling have come from Brazilian jiu-jitsu backgrounds, and of those none has surpassed Royler Gracie. Not only has the 145-pound Royler won three consecutive ADCC titles, but he also has pioneered techniques that have given him an unbelievable string of successes against opponents of all sizes, from 200-pound jiu-jitsu champions to 300-pound behemoths. In Submission Grappling Techniques, Royler spills his secrets for the first time.

Submission Grappling Techniques includes 102 positions designed specifically for the slippery, fast-paced, unpredictable world of no-gi grappling. It offers Royler's tips on successful combination moves, garnered from his more than 300 professional fights, as well as advice on training routines, mental stamina, and avoiding injuries that twenty years as an instructor has taught him. If you come from a jiu-jitsu background, you will want his guidelines on how to adjust your game when you have no gi to grab. If you come from judo, sambo, wrestling, or any other martial art, you will want to get the goods from the master who has defeated the other champions.

Royler Gracie won his first title at age seven and hasn't stopped since. Considered the most technically proficient Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter of all time, he has won the world title four times, along with many national titles. In no-gi fighting, he has won the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championship an unprecedented three consecutive years, along with victories in Pride, Vale Tudo, 21st Century Warriors, and many more. Coauthor of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique, Royler is head instructor at the Gracie Humaita Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Kid Peligro holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is one of the world's leading martial arts journalists, with regular columns in Grappling, Gracie Magazine, and ADCC News. He is the author or coauthor of three of the most successful martial arts books in recent years: The Gracie Way, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense Techniques.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Gi and No-gi grapplers alike.......2007-04-06

This book just like most in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu series can help improve your game tremendously. The book begins with a great theory section where Royler diverges secrets to training and becoming a champion among other great points. Sections on grips and drills are a great addition to the book. Grips are especially important to discuss when talking about grappling without a Gi since there is a whole new set. There is a good amount of techniques from any position that will work in Gi and no Gi situations. The authors credentials speak for themselves and this book is a great addition to any Jiu-Jitsu library it becomes a part of. Buy this book and you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide, but not for beginners........2006-12-14

As a more seasoned student of jiu-jitsu, I found this book to be a great addition to my library. It may even help me defeat my wife (a purple belt) one day. It is very detailed in its description of techniques but a beginner would be hard pressed to benefit from it (reason for 4 stars). Royler is a legend in jiu-jitsu and commands great respect as an authority on the sport, providing validity to this book. I have a number of the guides and they are all great. This is a good addition to a practitioner's library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, with Great Instructors in it........2006-05-13

This book is very good for someone who wants to learn submission wrestling, or someone who wants to add to the submission game. In my case I compete in gi, and have never fought in no gi, so getting this book, really helped me take what I learned with the gi, and make changes for when I don't have the gi. Very good instruction. Plus the instructors in it are unbelievable. I fight for Royler Gracie and David Adiv, but David Adiv is the one who trains me since he lives in the US, and he alone is Roylers best black belt, David Adiv puts out the best Fighters, and him and Royler together are great to learn from. Very good book. Highly suggest it to any fighter.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best in the Series!.......2006-02-02

Another in what has become a rapidly growing series (mostly co-written by Kid Pelligro) from Invisible Cities Press, backed by the same UAE Shiek who holds the ADCC Submission Grappling Championships (now every two years), ADCC legend Royler Gracie (son of Helio) returns to share techniques expressly designed for no-Gi/Kimono Submission Grappling.

This volume is giant step up from the previous two. Not only are the techniques rock solid, the organization is excellent (heck, there's organization!) and Royler goes through everything from getting grips (tricky without the cloth to hold on to), to takedowns, passing the guard, submissions from top and from the guard, sweeps, etc.

The text portion covers rules, strategies, and other important aspects of ADCC-style Submission Grappling, and the photos. like the rest of the series, are bright, full color, and with alternate angles when necessary.

It's unfortunate it took the series a few stumbles to get on track, but awesome that if finaly found such great form!

5 out of 5 stars From One of the Best..... Ever.......2006-01-22

We all know about Helio Gracie's sons. They have their champions in each arena and Royler's game seems to be submission wrestling. He is a perennial competitor at the ADCC championships and has come away with his share of medals.

Royler is a natural instructor and likes to teach by showing the techniques. Teaming up with Peligro has proven to be a bit of a masterstroke. Peligro is a well credentialled writer, but has the advantage of being a BJJ black belt and being very familiar with the Gracie family, themselves.

This family of books (Peligro) is always well organised and well photographed. This organisation and photography has improved over time, as well, and these later books are close to the best books in the market. The only ones surpassing them are the Ed Beneville books on the Guard and Passing the Guard.

In this book, Royler spends a significant portion of the text talking about adaptation of the gi game to no-gi and training for each type of competition. His discussion of strategy and the mental game is an important part of this book and separates this volume from many other books in the genre.

First, Royler covers grips and controls. These are well known to wrestlers, but this an area the jiu jitsu practitioner needs to get right to play no-gi. He follows this with drills for the basics. Stuff we all need. You've probably seen the drills before, but have you used them? Maybe it's time you did!

Following this is a fairly in-depth look at standing grappling. Takedowns, takedown defences and using those grips and controls from earlier are covered.

The standup section is good. Workman like, though. It's stuff you need to work on. The next section is the bit we buy the book for. It's when the man talks ground work. Surprising to some, Royler's game is basic. The techniques string together into a game. Royler shows how to combine techniques that flow together and shows details that make them work.

The book is well worth it for the gi grappler who is looking to improve his or her no-gi game. Equally, it is for anyone who wants to see what is working for the man, himself.

Any fan of Jiu-Jitsu will love this book! My husband read it constantly. Great illustrations and step-by-step directions on how to do each move. A++

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Fighting Techniques.......2006-12-12

Royce Gracie is at his simplistic best,Teaching moves that are simple and will be remembered in the ring. Royce Gracie is the only man in octagon history to defeat 3 oppenents in one night 3times to win the first 3 out of 4 UFC Championships.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of pictures but very few submissions.......2006-11-29

This book will teach you a lot of very basic drills and ways to move from an offensive position to a stronger offensive position and in many cases teaches you how to defend those same advances. The book has very little about armbars, leg locks and figure 4 triangle leg chokes (although it does have a really cool one to use if you're already mounted past your opponents guard). You'll become efficient at understanding terms like guard, half guard, mount, back, side control and how to move from one position to a stronger using proven techniques. I give the book 5 stars because the techniques presented are well taught using pictures and easy to understand language. This book focuses mainly on techniques used to attack your opponent, today I'm ordering the second book of the series on ground game defense, after all, there's nobody better at defending a ground position than Royce.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Instructional Book.......2006-07-31

This book does a pretty good job of showing technique and providing helpful tips. However, one will not get very much out of it w/o already having a solid grasp of grappling basics and concepts. It does a good job but must be supplemented w/ actual practice... of course.

Book Description

Fight Smarter. Fight Better. Powerful and practical, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has consistently proven its effectiveness in mixed martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.® In Vale Tudo Competitions, there are few rules, and in street fighting, there are none. In both of these violent environments BJJ has masterful strategies and ingenious tactics that let you conquer again and again.

No Rules will enable you to learn and master those strategies and tactics strategies and apply them in the heat of the fight. BJJ authority and master teacher Gene Simco reveals the keys to every aspect of no-holds-barred fighting, from standing attacks to brutal ground finishing strikes and submissions. Simco also shows you how to defend against Vale Tudo techniques and explains the possible dangers of each attack and defense. No Rules is the first book to bridge the gap between sport Jiu-jitsu—where there is no striking and fighters wear a Gi (and often incorporate it into their techniques)—and Vale Tudo, which has no Gi and allows striking. If you play sport Jiu-jitsu, No Rules will show you how to adapt what you know to Vale Tudo and reveal a new world of move and countermove that will allow you to win in the harsh but exciting world of Vale Tudo competition. Learn how to:

Pass the guard - with crucial modifications of sport Jiu-jitsu techniques

Attack and submission moves from the top position

Establish the Mount and overwhelm your opponent

Take the Back to end it fast

Make your guard safe and sound for Vale Tudo Whether you're already accomplished in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and are seeking new challenges, or just looking for the most effective self-defense and restraining moves around, No Rules has the potent, practical answers you need.

"I am a veteran Police Officer with 23 years of experience in a major city in the North east. I am currently assigned to their Emergency Service Unit which performs a SWAT function for the city. I routinely handle high risk warrant service, violent felons, emotionally disturbed persons, barricaded gunmen and hostage takers. I have found that for me Gene Simco's No Rules BJJ: Street Effective Groundfighting series is a practical, pragmatic approach to functionalizing your bjj skills for non-mat friendly environments. The organization and presentation of the material is clear and progressive, easily assimilated by both the beginner and advanced practitioner looking to transition his or her skills from the mat to the street. Focus is also given to developing a street guard as well as beating the guard which presents a sizable amount of problems for the uninitiated. The dvd set offers any level practitioner enough variation, detail and ideas that can be successfully integrated into their own every day practice."

2 out of 5 stars Oversold and Underdelivered.......2007-04-05

I am a martial arts instructor who is wanting to incorporate some basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into my curriculum for self-defense purposes. After reading all of the glowing reviews about this book and DVD being "straight and to the point" and how Simco just shows the street-effective techniques I thought this would be the right resource to utilize.

I was wrong.

I am very disappointed in the skimpy material in this book, all of which is designed for use by a very strong fighter in an MMA competition, not a normal sized individual on the street. Also, the DVD is nothing more than an advertisement for his other DVD sets. Seriously, there are only 3 techniques on the DVD (about 10 minutes worth) and the rest is previews without instruction for his other products.

The techniques he does show are good if you are an MMA fighter, though there are not a lot of them. If you are looking for a self-defense book, I suggest buying something else.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to the point!.......2006-08-27

This is THE book for self defense and street fighting basics. Simco tells it like it is, focusing on techniques that work not "religion and theory". Simco has a gift for explaining the techniques he uses in an easy to follow manner. I'm looking forward to purchasing more material from this author.

4 out of 5 stars Complete but not extraordinary.......2006-08-24

It's a good book. It gives coverage to basic and practical techniques. For the motivated beginner, it will give as much information they can hope to obtain outside of sparing and practice. I think the DVD could have been more informative and less a sales vehicle for a set of DVDs by the author. I couldn't give this product 5 stars, because I had hoped to see more photos with descriptive narrative on the reason for changing levels and what counters to avoid if one attempts any technique. But these shortcoming are overcome by prctical advice throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Book Overview.......2005-10-05

Overall, this book is exactly what it says it is and shows the techniques of Brazilian Jujitsu that are best used in MMA and Self Defense.

There are the normal forwards and introductions that set the stage for the reader. The Forward done by a military special operations MSG who endorses the use of BJJ in general for hand to hand combat (most military personel have adopted the practice of BJJ) and talks a bit about how they use Simco's products.

Simco then gives an introduction as to how to use the book and his philosophy of training and organization, explaining that its basically better to learn 20 moves at 100% than 100 at 20%. He explains the overall philosophy of Jiu-jitsu and how this is a book of how BJJ techniques fit into a Street or MMA situation, not a book about how to change BJJ into something its not. He stays pretty true to BJJ throughout the book and doesn't add anything that isn't Jujitsu for the sake of making it more `street', instead shows how Jujitsu can solve all the Self Defense problems the reader might have. He explains how the practice of MMA is great for self defense because it is the closest you can get to reality without hurting your partner or yourself. His philosophy of training in general is to be better than the opponent both technically and morally otherwise, "we are no better than those who attack us". `Jiu-jitsu' does mean `Gentle Art'.

Before he gets into the techniques, he gives a history, which was pretty interesting, then follows with the philosophy of positions and the scientific side of physical attributes.

The Techniques:

Before he gets into anything technique-wise, he does something I appreciated as a martial artist by explaining the differences between a real fight and mixed martial arts competition. There are differences and Simco both identifies and acknowledges them.

Unlike many other books, Simco's are very well organized by position and within position, sequencing the techniques so that they link together. This makes them easy to learn, easy to reference and better yet, it makes them work.

He starts from the standing position and talks a bit about striking and how to learn the basics of it so that you understand exactly what is being thrown at you.

He then discusses how to achieve the clinch position in a street fight and some self defense tips. The pictures are clear and go over the details of several takedowns for street and MMA step by step with pretty good instructions. He shows a few variations of moves and the differences of how they might be applied differently with clothing and in MMA with shorts, like the "biana" takedown (basically the brazilian double leg), which he shows a couple of times, addressing how to do it with a penetration step (taking a knee), then without for a hard surface, then a variation, making use of the pants.

The book follows a step by step photo and description approach through all the BJJ positions for the bulk of the book, covering guard passing, the use of the guard, top attacks and escapes, and back mount attacks. All pretty much linked together.

The other nice reference feature is that small thumbnail pictures are displayed down the left side of each page so that after reading the book through (once you've go the basic idea) you can flip through and get a quick refresher or visually find the technique you are looking for. This is especially great for the beginner who isn't familiar with all the jargon and terminology, its easier to look at the picture of what you want to work on.

The last part explains briefly a bit more about simplifying BJJ techniques for self defense even further in his Self Defense Made Easy dvds and works as an introduction to the DVD that comes with the book. After reading the book and checking out the dvd, I purchased the full No Rules set, which was even better than the book and more expansive being that it is a four dvd package. I also purchased the Self Defense dvds and found it to be a useful guide to what I should show my wife whom I want to know some self defense but won't come to class.

For the Beginner, this book adjusts the basics and shows how they can be performed in a non-sportive fight.

For a Martial Artist from another style who wants to add BJJ without going through the belt ranks again, this book is probably the best out there. It's just what you need to know without all the filler and fluff.

For the Intermediate BJJ student, this book will show you how to adjust positions for better self defense or act as a great reference guide if you are training for mixed martial arts competition.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Caught Off 'Guard' Without It!.......2005-09-21

Much has already been said about this book, so I'll keep it simple and add my $.02.

Many people practicing BJJ these days do so only for sport and some think that they know what it takes to defend themselves. Maybe they can against someone with no skills, but not against a trained fighter. This book is very with the times as it fills in the gap for people who train mostly with the gi and would like to know how to adjust their moves for a no rules or less rules situation. For someone who isn't interested in 'pajama-grappling' as I like to call it, this book teaches you the BJJ that you really need to know without all the silly flexible monkey moves that'll probably get you killed anyway. The DVD that came with it makes it a real bargain too!

4 out of 5 stars Great organization.......2006-03-08

Unlike some other reviewers, I found this book very well organized and clear. I had felt that my cross mount attacks were few and ineffective. This book is grouped by body positions thus it was easy for me to home in and study that section alone.
I did not feel that the illustrations needed more info since that is what my class and instructor is for. The book's forte is where JJ shows multiple counter attack dependent on the the opponents reaction.
I did not have unrealistic expectations that the moves in this book will be effective against all my opponents. Especially since all techniques shown are nothing new. The book is informative to me because it showed transitions and options that are available with these finite techniques.

4 out of 5 stars All-Belts Excellence!.......2006-02-02

Another in what has become a rapidly growing series (mostly co-written by Kid Pelligro) from Invisible Cities Press, backed by the same UAE Shiek who holds the ADCC Submission Grappling Championships (now every two years), Jean-Jacques Machado (nephew of Carlos Gracie sr.) turns up this time to share his ideas on sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling.

Like his cousin, Royler's, Submission Grappling book, this volume is a HUGE improvement over the first two. Machado starts off by giving his thoughts on competition, everything from his noted 'attacking' style to how to deal with injuries, however the bulk of the book is the big, glossy, full-color photo section, split into two parts: one with the Gi/Kimono, and one without.

Machado is one of the very few BJJ people to prove himself a finisher in no-gi Submission Grappling as well. His 'go for the finish' mentality not only shows his own creativity and energy, but electrifies a sport just as often known for stalling.

Some of the techniques shown are risky, dependant on speed and surprise, but the sheer number of different entires shown for most of the old standards (armbar, omoplata, triangle, etc.) will almost certainly prove 'new' to most readers.

If you want a book from this series, and you enjoy both the Gi/Kimono and the no-gi, this is the one to get.

4 out of 5 stars Good Technique - Even for lower level belts.......2005-08-30

This book shows ALOT of tech. that you can apply to your game no matter what belt you currenty hold. I'm not a black belt (YET)but found many moves that I have aready been taught in class.

5 out of 5 stars Great great book.......2005-02-05

This is simply the best grappling/BJJ book I've ever seen. First of all this book is not for begginers, it's for intermediate and above level grapplers. This book isn't an encyclopedia of techniques, it's more like a general strategy guide. The main idea is to open up your mind so you will think of some of your own combinations and variations of moves and setups taught. I'd like to use quote from the book to explain:

"One thing I've noticed is that often instruction is too rigid. Students often are taught to commit moves to memory and to repeat them the same way every time. You can get by with this at the beginning levels, but by the time you reach the advanced levels-the focus of this book-you will find yourself at a serious disadvantage if your moves don't flex to deal with the dynamics of each individual situation. That's why in this book I've tried to give you lots of options, and encouraged you to think for yourself. Because in the real world things don't always go down like they do in a textbook, and if you are the one who can create on the spur of the moment, you are going to win."

This is EXACTLY what happens by reading and practicing the things in this book. I've never seen this idea conveyed in any books before, which is one of the main reasons I rated it so high.
The book has techniques for both gi and no-gi, although most of the gi techniques will work for no gi too. This is because, if you didn't already know, Jean Jacques Machado was born with no fingers on one of his hands. With that said it is truely amazing how skilled he is with such a serious handicap. Since he has no fingers he can't grip the gi obviously, so he uses his legs alot more than usual. JJM simply thinks differently than most people because of this and it shows in his matches.
My only complain with the book is the actual detail given to the moves, but it is only a minor complaint and I still easily give this book 5 starts, and recommened that every grappler needs to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars No katas????.......2004-03-02

This book is like a reference for Jean Jacques Machado's class. Almost every technique in the book is one that he teaches in class. It is not a book for beginners but you also do not have to be Jean Jacques to do the moves. You should have some training under your (blue or higher) belt. As with all of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are many details that effect the outcome and execution of your technique as well as the reaction of your partner in defending the move. Not all of the details and variables are (or can) be covered in the book. It is a very good reference especially if you are training under a black or high belt that can help you refine your techniques. As anyone in jiu-jitsu should know, there are no prescribed movements. Everything is dependent on "action-reaction" because the guy you're fighting is going to be fighting back for real! There are no katas to practice.

2 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2007-10-04

I really was interested in this book b/c it comes with a DVD. I don't understand moves very well just looking at pictures. Unfortunately, a lot of the moves in the book are not on the DVD included. He shows how to do a takedown from the clinch, and a few other things but I can't remember.

Also be aware that there is a lot of controversy regarding the legitimacy of this guy, check any MMA or BJJ forum. Nothing personal against the guy, but I haven't read anything positive about him - but I could be wrong so glean from that what you will. You would probably be better off buying Cesar Gracie's set. It costs more but it's worth it.

3 out of 5 stars good, but basic.......2007-05-22

The book is ok, but there's nothing there that you wouldn't learn in the first couple months of training. So, if your just starting out it's useful.

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor.......2007-01-07

I really don't understand how this book can get 5 stars.
The actual content isn't too bad but what really brings it down is the layout and the photos. Most of the photos are tiny and combined with the poor quality paper they seem faded making it hard to distinguish what is going on.
I am waiting on a few other BJJ books I have purchased based on 5 star reviews.I'm now a little bit woried that they will only be as good as this book which I think is very poor.
The DVD however isn't too bad. Some good stuff there.
I was going to give 2 stars due to the DVD but this is a book review so
stuff it just 1 star.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for Students.......2006-01-03

This book is accurate, intelligent and well thought out. Unlike others, when I buy a DVD player, I don't expect it to cook my breakfast, so when I bought this BASICS books, I was very happy that it contained the essential basic techniques of brazilian jiu-jitsu and not a bunch of flashy moves that will only work on a grappling dummy. I actually purchased this book in an earlier version released by the author a couple of years ago and still use it as a reference now. I did not receive this copy with the DVD included, but purchased the set at Gene Simco's site and am even more pleased with the videos.

5 out of 5 stars No Dust on my Copy........2006-01-03

I personally found this book to be quite helpful. The photos are clear and each person is wearing different colored uniforms, unlike some of the other books mentioned, so the details present themselves very clearly. The descriptions are written in clear, plain English. Any normal human being who is honest will admit that the practice of BJJ is intimidating, so a bit of basic knowledge in book form is a useful tool for any serious student. Anyone doing martial arts for years will tell you that the Basics are all you really need anyway, so yes, I think I really need this book. I also liked the addition of the DVD, very few books on the market have this. I suppose there are a lot of white to blue belt experts out there who think they know everything. If you are too smart to learn any more, than this book isn't for you.

The bottom line is, if you are advanced, what do you need a book for anyway? A Basics book is a much needed tool for any beginner.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I should know!.......2007-01-09

I am experienced in BJJ and have taken Muay-Thai for years. That being said this book is awesome. The striking sections absolutly suck but gues what...this is not a striking book. He does good for someone who knows nothing about stand-up. As far as BJJ. It is great. Espesially for someone who is trying to learn MMA. All the tachniques are no-gi so it aplies to MMA. If you want to learn some cross-collar chokes or scarf-holds then look them up online...or use your imagination. This book shows you almost every relivant technique that you need for MMA or street fighting. Why else learn this stuff. IF you buy this book you will be very happy. I return to it all the time to refresh on stuff for training. Great job Rodrigo.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, no pajama wrestling!.......2006-07-06

First of all this book has nice crystal clear glossy photo's, to me that doubles the value right there! I have another book with black and white picture on regular paper and while the content is quite good it just doesn't beckon me to read it like this one. Second of all while the cover shows him wearing a Gi there is no freakin Gi's in the book thank goodness!! If you are sick and tired of every single move being explained...and reach and grab his Gi this is the book for you! No Bath Robe wrestling in here! Third of all this book is easily a $20 book and one of the sellers is selling it new for $9.50, snatch it up before they come to their senses! The other reviewer talked about it like he was going to give it 5 or 4 stars and then gave it 3 for some reason? Great prodution quality, no Gi, all the good moves you need to know, seems like 5 stars to me.

3 out of 5 stars Another good Gracie book.......2006-04-04

Pride Fighting veteran Rodrigo Gracie presents BJJ's approach to MMA fighting in this book. It starts, like most Kid Peligro books, with an introduction in which Rodrigo addresses mental and physical preparation, teaching and learning techniques, adjusting grappling for MMA, picking a strategy and a team. Though each section is brief, I believe their inclusion in this book is a smart move, especially to those who are new to the MMA game. Next, the majority of the book is on techniques. The author basically looks at MMA through the eyes of a jiujitsu specialist, and his choice of techniques and strategy reflects this. His stand-up techniques, for instance, focus primarily on getting into clinching position and taking the opponent down, though he does have some nice distance drills and defenses that lead right into takedowns. He then moves on to groundwork, and spends roughly half of that time addressing the guard. He has separate chapters on attacking from the closed guard, attacking from the open guard, and passing the guard. After guard work he talks about side control, the mount (including back mound), and the knee-on-stomach. Those last two sections were noticeably small compared to the others. The positives of this book were the clear, color pictures (as in most Gracie-Peligro works), the fact that Gracie didn't neglect the striking-as-a-compliment-to-grappling aspect of MMA, the order the moves were in (often a follow-up move was shown immediately after a primary move), and the very clear strategy that was followed throughout the book. I really can't find anything wrong with this book, though nothing particularly special jumped out at me. If you know BJJ, and can figure out that you can hit, most of the ground stuff would be common-sense. I'd recommend this book to fighters, primarily to BJJers getting into the MMA game (to make the transition easier) and to fighters who's primary base is striking (to both address the ground game, and to learn how to use their strikes on the ground as part of an overall strategy).
