Training the right way!!.......2005-10-10
The Delmar smith methed is a great way to train a hunting bird dog. One of the best things about this book is knowing what is important to your bird dog. Nine out of ten people now days will tell you to start training on birds before pups learn to run. Not Delmar. If you let them be a pup for the first year you will have twice the dog you would have had!! Very informational. Think like a dog to train a dog...
Excellent.......2005-05-10
I used this book 20 years ago to train a Brittany and have now purchased it again for a new dog. The methods and advice are not only unique to Delmar but also highly effective. Not to mention a humorous read.
informative and funny.......2003-06-13
This is my first time owning and training a gun dog. I purchased and read this book before I bought my puppy. I was skeptical but Delmar's methods DO work. This book set the basis for what others would try to teach me later-- and I was able to share information with them as well. My dog performed at an early age as a result of Delmar's advice. You have to be able to go along with the writing style -- which I found quite humorous and much more fun to read than a text book. A great addition to any library!

It belongs in your library.......2002-09-17
The real strength of this book is that it gets you in the right mindset for gun dog training. The techniques are simple yet ingenious. I've used most of them and built my training foundation around Delmar Smith's principles.
Buy this book and several others. See a professional trainer. There's no harm in educating yourself.
The best.......2002-04-07
This is one of the finest dog training books I have read. Tarrant's books read well and Smith is a proven success in dog training. The book has been around for awhile, but it still has signinficant value. I hope the publisher keeps printing it for quite some time. I will be using a lot of the Delmar Smith method to train my new pup.

Old? New? Sidelocks? Boxlocks? Help!.......2004-11-07
The book has a lot of history, and is very informative on the history of double guns, and especially detailed in that of American heritage, I read a substatial amount about auto ejectors which I understand, twisted bore and smooth bore, pretty much self explainable, but exactly what is a sidelock, what is a boxlock? How do they differ? Old or new which way is the way to go? I look forward to buying a few doubles and using them. Obviously I do not need a $10,000, or even a $15,000 plus double, but I would like one I could use in the field and have something of value down the road in the next 20 or 30 plus years. I think a few informative drawings and discriptions a little more of the understanding of the workings and parts in detail would be benefical. I am not new to firearms for I have a found respect of them and their uses in more than a few areas but doubles are fairly new to me, and with that, new terminology and parts are hard to understand without knowing what to look for.
Definitive Work.......2004-07-14
More McIntosh. I don't know who has the definitive work on shotguns, but this one must be close. Especially loved the section on spagetti shotguns. I can tell you up front that, for American guns, he prefers Foxes, but if you have read his works, you already know that.
This is just more McIntosh. And that is good, even though he has ruined my life. For years I've just considered guns to be tools like drills and saws .... tools to be used but not pampered. Then I discovered McIntosh, and Italian shotguns, and life has not been the same since.
I've been shooting Japanese. Totally reliable. Never had a problem. But it's like driving a Toyota. I want a Ferrari.
Michael is to blame.
Good Overall Review of High-Grade Shotguns.......2003-10-22
I agree with the reviewer from Seattle -- this book is strictly about high-grade shotguns such as Parker, L.C. Smith, Fox, the Winchester 21 and many others, and has nothing to do with handguns. Overall it's a good book for this type of shotgun.
Review above is Baloney.......2000-10-20
The above review is a bunch of baloney by someone who has never read the book. This book has nothing to do with handguns at all. It's about shotguns, and specifically about the two barrel variety. - - This happens to be an excellent book and a great resource for someone contemplating the purchase of a nice double gun. - -
Best Guns.......2000-04-21
Best guns depicts what is there the best to use for when looking for a gun. McIntosh clearly has a wealth of experince and love of the subject that he writes on.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not great.......2006-05-03
The book is good, but having the CD really helps. If you have ever wanted to learn to play GNR songs, get this book. This was the first tab book I ever purchased and I learned note for note how to play paradise city and sweet child o mine and the rest is history.
Good tab book, BUT..........2005-02-25
...I can't help but think that slowing the tracks down on the CD would have made it easier. Also, Perrin doesn't spend much time explaining the actual promised "breakdown" of Slash's work - the full title of the book is THE TECHNIQUES OF SLASH: THE BEST OF GN'R, but the title seems to change throughout - sometimes it's a demonstration of Slash's techniques, sometimes it's just tabs of their best songs with little explanation.
For example, he notes the "power strumming" for Civil War, but doesn't give any advice on how to strum the opening, which is in my opinion the hardest part.
It's still a good book and very useful because it contains accurate transcriptions of the songs, and many of them are indeed their best. However I also bought a tab book for Appetite for Destruction - the only bonus here is a few Use Your Illusion tracks and a CD, because the "tutoring" they promise on the back cover isn't exactly very helpful.
Also, don't be fooled by the back cover - November Rain, Bad Obsession and various others that are listed are NOT transcribed; brief solo passages are contained within a section called "Signature Slash Licks," which basically means you learn to play part of the November Rain solo, NOT the entire song (as I was lead to believe).
There's so much Appetite content in this book, I feel as if I paid twice for the same thing! But at least it has _some_ UYI songs, such as Yesterdays, which is fairly easy to play.
However also be aware that this is very hard - the solo for Sweet Child O' Mine is the hardest solo I've ever played, and they don't make it any easier with the CD. (Listen to how fast it goes!)
Good book, not perfect though.
Weak.......2004-05-27
Other books in the Signature Licks series include both full-speed and slowed-down musical examples on the CD for the tougher/faster passages. This one only includes full-speed tracks, which really limits its use. You may as well just buy a regular tab book or transcribe by ear.
Got Slash?.......2003-09-07
If you ever wanted a perfect transcription of any popular guns and roses song this book is for you. The slowed down versions of the songs are awesome for learning the licks. Be warned this book is very overwhelming when you first look at it, I say any intermediate or advanced guitarist would be able to benfit most from this book.
Good Buy!
Book Description
The gun-toting woman holds enormous symbolic significance in American culture. For over two centuries, women who pick up guns have interrupted the popular association of guns and masculinity, spurring debates about women's capabilities for violence as well as their capacity for full citizenship. In Her Best Shot, Laura Browder examines the relationship between women and guns and the ways in which the figure of the armed woman has served as a lightning rod for cultural issues from the American Revolution to the present.
Utilizing autobiographies, advertising, journalism, novels, and political tracts, among other sources, Browder traces appearances of the armed woman across an ideological spectrum ranging from the Black Panthers to militant right-wing militias. Among the colorful characters presented here are Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American Revolution; Pauline Cushman, who posed as a Confederate to spy for Union forces during the Civil War; Wild West sure-shot Annie Oakley; African explorer Osa Johnson; 1930s gangsters Ma Barker and Bonnie Parker; and Patty Hearst, the hostage-turned-revolutionary-turned-victim. With her entertaining and provocative analysis, Browder demonstrates that armed women both challenge and reinforce the easy equation that links guns, manhood, and American identity.
Customer Reviews:
Timely and well written!.......2007-02-27
I read this cover to cover in a few days- there is a lot of history about women and guns in America but the delivery is very digestible! With more and more female soldiers in combat in Iraq and other places in the world, this book dispels many myths about women and guns and gives a good background on American culture throughout the years.

Fine European gunmakers.......2005-07-24
This is how a good book on shotguns and rifles should be written and edited. Great discriptions on the mentioned guns and on the history of the manufacturers, even greater pictures. At the end there is helpful information on how to contact the different firms. Truly a great book.

Spanish Best.......2007-08-01
If you like learning about "best guns" this book is a must! It is the authority on the finest shotguns made in Spain. Very informative and lots of pictures. A+++++ reading for the informed shotgunner!
Best Source for Eibar Shotguns.......2007-07-20
This single volume contains a wealth of information about the history, development and current status of all the famed gunmakers of Eibar and the surrounding region. First hand interviews with key personnel in each company add in house credibility to his analysis. I:t ius a must have for the serious collector.
A worthwhile purchase........2007-06-22
"Spanish Best" - The Fine Shotguns of Spain. Second edition.
Despite some minor faults, this is a very worthwhile book, both an enjoyable read and an informative source of reference. It details the recent history of Spanish gunmaking in its capital - Eibar, and its surrounding area. It also contains a tourist guide for a first-time visitor there. Illustrated with a large number of colour plates, most beautiful and many showing the quality of the fine gunsmithing available in Spain. It is competently written by a writer who has a deep knowledge of the Spanish gun trade and who clearly loves his topic. All the key aspects of current Spanish shotgun manufacture are detailed, in addition to history, materials and general information. The editing leaves a little to be desired and the title choice is unfortunate, as the writer covers far more than "Spanish Best" shotguns, including among other topics a brief chapter on Spanish express rifles.
The book appears aimed primarily at the American aficionado and, while it takes for granted that the nuances of a Kersten fastener or the Bessemer process are understood, it assumes that the reader has no knowledge of Spain or the Basque region, no Spanish language skills and no knowledge of Spanish history or culture. It gives a potted history of Spain's Basque Region, its food, politics and the Spanish Civil War, which, while succinct and as accurate as broad brush-strokes can be, intrudes somewhat on the flow of the book and contributes little to the narrative. Indeed, any future edition would be better off with this information moved to an appendix. Any intending traveller would be better off buying appropriate travel guides for the region (e.g. Michelin Green Guide), though it is best not to expect too much by way of information on Eibar, a minor town with nothing to interest the casual tourist.
All the main manufacturers are covered, in a very egalitarian fashion, with about 15 pages devoted to each, be they Arrizabalaga, Arrieta, Grulla or AyA. An owner, like this reviewer, of an Arrizabalaga, judged by many to be the "Spanish Best," will not be disappointed but may wonder why they do not warrant more space. Kemen merits only five pages, but then its products and history are more recent. For some readers the book will lack definitive opinion such as why some artisans follow specific designs, or why a Purdey or Holland patent is preferred to a Boss (or the contrary.) Throughout, the book is sprinkled with many interesting details, contrasting, for example, the English and Spanish approach to machinery, the manufacturing process and its timespan.
Generally, books on guns can be divided into those for the educated shooter and those for the gun freak. Educated shooters have the "eye" to recognise beauty and are sufficiently technically proficient to understand and appreciate quality workmanship. The gun freak is an obsessive type, prepared to argue forcefully and at length about such matters as the correct number of pins for a sidelock, the procedure for an oil-rubbed stock finish, or discourse on the best type of bone to provide case-colours. Although this book falls into the category for the former, both will find sufficient to interest them. However, there are no secret recipes or processes divulged, nor are the technicana of engraving nor stock checkering discussed in any significant detail.
The forty or so pages of appendices include a bibliography and a useful dictionary of the various gun parts with diagrams, both English/Spanish and Spanish/English, all of which will facilitate and educate the speaker of basic Spanish. Serial numbers, dates of manufacture and proof marks are also covered. Also, there are essays on buying a gun and gun fit.
Despite its few shortcomings, this book is an informative and enjoyable read and in my view definitely merits a place in the library of any keen shot. It certainly would make a very welcome present for the owner of any Spanish gun, particularly a Spanish Best.
Spanish Best.......2005-07-24
The author obviously is an affiçionado of Spain, the Basque region in particular, the inhabitants and the guns they make: who can blame him? Terry Wieland surely knows what he's writting about due to his many trips to the region. The history of the Basque country and the gunmakers there only give more credit to the book and the author. There is more than enough information on the different gunmakers, their history and their products to satisfy even the most stringent criticists. I would be honoured to visit the Basque gunmakers with him by my side.
It's the experience . . . fine guns and the Basque people!.......2005-05-06
One can little criticize the author for including information about Spanish history, the Basque people, and the Eibar region. Many among us are drawn to fine guns out of appreciation for things inherently beautiful and also from a sense of subtle but ever-present wanderlust--thoughts of carrying a Spanish best afield in some special corner of the earth where the only sounds to be heard are the chime of bellota barrels and the whistling of wings. And it is savoring the moment and relishing in the tradition that makes it all worthwhile. Yet tradition embraces not just the details of the tool but also the history of its creator.Spanish Best captures the essence of it all with handsome, gloss, color pictures and sufficient detail to do the Spanish doublegun justice. Perhaps in future editions, the author will include more great images of the guns and the region, but hopefully not at the price of omitting historical details that make one's quest for a fine side-by-side so memorable.
