5 out of 5 stars Gritty, riveting, and very well done.......2007-08-20

"If you read all the poker books and become a technical expert on which hands to play and how to play them, you are still likely to end up broke."

If you just want a book on how to play poker, keep looking; there are lots of those. Although this book has play lessons and elaborate mathematical charts, it's more about the life of a pro. I recommend it for everyone with or without professional aspirations. This started out as part of Doyle Brunson's book, but it became a book in itself.

BG discusses cheaters (and he names names! and casinos), deadbeats, critics, his own life and ethos, who to tip and why (that was a real eye-opener!), sex and how it can affect one's game, superstition, tournament strategy, and much more. There is poker etiquette I had not read elsewhere, such as how to win gracefully, and why it's important.

It is illustrated with COLOR plates (how's that for a switch?). It's chock full of color photos of famous players and casinos, like a scrap book. It has an index, plus a separate index for the photos so you can see who's in them.

One caveat: My worst poker days (in terms of losses) started with me reading from this. Every time. Superstition? No, but for whatever reason it put me in the wrong frame of mind to play. (I found it a bit depressing in places.) After a few of those, I would only read it on days I did not play.

3 out of 5 stars A collection of random thoughts.......2007-07-16

I bought this after having read the works of Harrington, Gordon, Sklansky, Brunson, etc. This book is a mixture of Greenstein's thoughts on the poker society in general and some strategy examples. My impression of the book is that it just seems to be a series of random thoughts by the author and that it was not very comprehensive. Each chapter is fairly short and the book is full of color photos that serve as filler material and don't add any value (no captions on the pictures). A couple of points I did like were the points Greenstein made about buying in for the minimum instead of maximum in cash games and his theory to accumulate chips early in tournaments (instead of playing tight early as many others advocate). I would only recommend this as an addition to a comprehensive poker library and not as an early read (it is subtitled as an advanced poker guide).

2 out of 5 stars nothing good.......2007-07-09

I have 7 poker books. This one is by far the worst! No good tips, no insight, no strategy. Greenstein rambling on about his career. And it is huge in size and doesnt fit on my bookshelf with all my other books. What a waste.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-06-20

The title says it all. This is one of the best poker guides I've read so far. Barry points out and makes you think about things that you really can't put to words. It helped me a lot.

5 out of 5 stars easy read.......2007-05-12

Interestingly enough after reading this book I did not win any of the poker tournaments I played in. Which is sad really, with the high expectation of implementing all of my new tools for no limit poker. But that really was not what the book was meant to do and I am glad because that is what every other poker book I read was trying to do. What Greenstein does and what makes this book so powerful is that he gives a solid foundation for a serious poker player to follow not just at the tables but also with the social scene, family life, and financial side of playing the game.

If you are looking for a get rich quick guide to no limit hold em, you should go read Helmuths book (chances are you will go broke you Jackal). If you want a guide into the world of poker that will explain how to handle almost every aspect of the game then Barry is your man.

Oh and the pictures are cool too!

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-10-03

WOW DICK COOK... do you even know what you are talking about? I thought this book was insighful and well thought out. It covered several different angles for beginers. This is who the book is aimed for. This book is not directed toward the more experienced players. Well done Mr. Fischman, well done.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-08-21

Not one worthwhile idea in this book. For beginners try Lee Jones..Intermediate..Mat Hilger and advanced Harrington. They are worthwhile books. Tis one is not!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2007-07-09

Not a bad book, it does have a lot of useful tid bits inside the pages, but the book will not really challenge your thinking and insight to the game. If you're a beginner this book may be a useful read, but if you've been playing for a while and past the beginner stage, you might want to look at some other more in depth material.

5 out of 5 stars Improved my INSIGHT and MIND!.......2007-06-15

****1/2
This was my second poker book and first online book. I have been playing off and on for about 7 years now and this book has helped my game tremendously, specifically online, but not exclusively either. Scott gives you a lot to think about during the game and also helps you to think on different levels and how your emotions and mind come into play whether playing online or live games. There were many excellent tips and anecdotes from well know pros as well, both online and brick and mortar. There is a great pace to the book - it is a very quick and easy read. Lastly, another nice feature is the multitude of pointers for sit-n-go's, tournaments, and cash/ring games!

The only drawback might be the lack of mention of odds in general, which do play a large part in poker, but that should be a given anyway. This can be learned from many other books anyway. I highly recommend this book to just about anyone, beginners and advanced players alike. You will certainly become a better player with all of the great strategies and insights provided. And, in turn, hopefully you can make much more money! Best of luck always!

4 out of 5 stars Good book for both experienced and inexperienced players.......2007-03-16

Scott Fischman is a guy who was once a dealer who went on to win a couple of World Series of Poker bracelets including one for the HORSE event. This interested me. (Yes, I used to play basketball and remember Bob McAdoo of the Lakers who was a deadly shot at HORSE, about whom it was said--by Michael Cooper--"You do, McAdoo.") But I digress.

HORSE in poker stands for Hold'em, Omaha hilo, Razz, Stud, and stud Eight or better. It's spread in some clubs, but you can almost always find some limit games at PokerStars and other places on the Internet. A round is played of hold'em and then a round of Omaha eight or better, then a round of razz, which is stud lowball, and then a round of regular stud and then stud hilo, and the cycle is repeated. You have to be a pretty good all-around player to be successful at HORSE, and anybody who can beat that game regularly earns my respect.

This book, like many others published in the wake of the TV- and Internet-turboed rise of poker, is directed at beginners or near beginners. The "Mastering Internet Poker" in the subtitle is justified however because Fischman reveals a lot about his overall approach to the game of poker, especially his psychological approach. For Fischman the most important psychology in the game is self-psychology.

There is plenty of strategy presented throughout the book and some explanations given on how to play various hands in various situations; but mainly Fischman concentrates on his overall approach to the games. In a sense this is a hybrid book: part "how-to" and part "how-I-did-it."

Fischman is not a deep strategic master of the game or a mathematical whiz. He is a "by the seat of your pants" player with a wealth of experience both online and in the brick and mortar clubs. His advice on tournament strategy, especially online Sit-N-Go's is excellent. He divides the tournament, one-table or otherwise, into three "seasons," the beginning when blinds are small relative to stacks; the middle, when the size of your stack begins to dictate decisions; and the endgame, when many or most decisions will involve all your chips and your tournament life.

In the "beginning" he likes to "look for spots where I can safely--or as close to safely as poker allows--double my stack. Otherwise, I've got no business being in the hand." (p. 71) In the middle he likes to start making small raises often with the idea of picking up the blinds from his now very careful opponents. In the endgame, Fischman becomes super-aggressive. One excellent idea of his is that near the bubble when many players start to play very carefully you can steal a lot of pots. He believes that in Sit-N-Gos you should aim to finish first, not just in the money because of the big difference between first place money (usually 50% of the prize fund) and third place (usually 20%). So he advises, don't be afraid of finishing fourth and out of the money. A first and a fourth are better than two third-place finishes.

Also interesting is Fischman's take on "multi-tabling" online. He believes that playing several tables at once not only allows the expert to win more money, it allows the expert to get into the zone and become "the Robot," as he calls himself when he is just one with the decisions, one after another in front of him on his computer screen. His idea is that because multi-tabling is so demanding on your attention it forces you to focus. You don't have time to worry about bad beats or time to over-analyze. You are a Robot, focused, decisive and unemotional. Yes, you miss subtleties and some opportunities, but you don't try to do too much and you go with your first instinct which is often right.

Fischman tends to the superstitious, which of course is NOT recommended. However he justifies it from a psychological point of view by noting that if something makes you feel confident that will help you win. So it's okay to depend a little on that lucky shirt, and yes it may very well be the case as you drive into the club and see all those license plates with the poker hands on them, "KAA 555," etc., that yes you ARE going to be lucky today!

Some of Fischman's recommendations on how to play specific hands in specific situations go against the grain of the conventional wisdom. But here again I found his ideas interesting. Sometimes he seems clearly "wrong" or maybe just doesn't make himself clear. For example on page 125 he writes about tables being broken down later in a tournament as players are eliminated. He notes that he doesn't like being moved to a new table after having made some rebuys because "I want to have the chance to win back the chips I have lost. I can't do that if the players I've been kind enough to 'loan' my chips to are suddenly scattered throughout the tournament. There's nothing worse that rebuying 10 times, having your table broken down, then finding yourself at a new table where no one has purchased a rebuy."

Unless I'm missing something, this seems plainly illogical because it doesn't matter from whom he wins chips. He still has the same number of chips and the same relative chance of winning the tournament. I think what he must mean is that while losing those chips he picked up some valuable information about those players and now can't use that information.

What is obvious from reading this very readable book is that Scott Fischman is one heck of a good poker player and that his strength is in his overall approach to the game, some of which comes shining forth from these pages. I think both experienced players and beginners will find something of value here.

5 out of 5 stars This book is straight ACES all the way through!.......2006-12-15

If you're a poker player looking for another purely instructional manual --- save your money here. If on the other hand you'd like entertaining stories of today's & yesterday's most successful pros and what made them that way then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It gives profiles on some of poker's all-time best players past and present while managing to deliver the "nuts" using specific examples from their successes at the table. The main message of this book is that there are as many ways and strategies to win at poker --- particularly Texas Hold 'Em as there are players, REALLY! The best lesson it gave me was to figure out which of these many players' "style" of play best fit my own and go to school learning. Additionally, at the end it gives brief summaries of pokers most popular games along with a poker dictionary of terms. I really think the beginner as well as the expert can take something valuable away from these pages.... The profiles of the players are every bit as informative as they are entertaining and insightful. So pick up this book and get a "read" on some of the games greats to improve your game!

3 out of 5 stars million dollar strategies...not.......2005-10-18

It was an entertaining read but it just did not deliver on its titles promise of providing any "million-dollar strategies". It also has a very dis-jointed feel to it-start, stop, start again. Well, after reading it through, that minor annoyance makes sense. This is a collection of articles written by the two authors put into book form so the flow is uneven and a little distracting. I enjoyed reading about the great gamblers and poker players, but it just left me a little disappointed having bought it with different expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bios ..........2005-08-23

This is a great poker book. But be warned, it is not a book on poker strategies. It is, however, a wonderful book with each chapter detailing a bio on a different poker player(s). The read does provide a glimpse into the style of the different players. But it does not go into great depths on specific strategies and so on. This suits me just fine considering that there is now a mountain of poker books covering strategies.

So if you're interested in getting a broad feel for how some of the elite poker players slugged their way to the top, this is an excellent book. If you enjoy literature and poker, this will make an excellent read when you need to pass the time (e.g., airplane ride, can't sleep at night, etc.) ...

5 out of 5 stars Lords of the Felt. .......2005-08-06

One of the consequences of the big poker craze is that books are coming out a million on the subject. Aces and Kings is a perfect example of the fad, but it bares none of the hallmarks of quick production. The prose reads very much like what one would expect to find in a mainstream magazine; which is not surprising as several of these chapters appeared first in places like Cigar Aficionado. The book, on the whole, is quality and chocked full of details. It's main focus concerns those who try to make an easy living in the hardest way possible, i.e. the professional players. With ESPN and The Travel Channel, they have ever-increasingly become the focus of the public's attention. Aces and Kings attempts to inform readers about the poker life by analyzing its biggest names and figures. Many of these cardsharps have become celebrities overnight. Their mini-biographies are extremely interesting and are told over the course of 15 chapters. Three of them, "Web Kids," "The Women of Poker," and "The New Superstars" concern, groupings of players rather than individuals. In this, I think that they made one major error because Daniel Negreanu deserves a chapter of his own. That guy's personality is big enough to fill a warehouse.

Nearly all of the pros have lives that make for good reading, but, in my opinion, the most fascinating entry was the one concerning Chris Ferguson. In case you might not recognize his name, he was The World Series of Poker 2000 champion and is one of the most recognizable players in the game due to his Black Bart cowboy hat and huge Oakley shades. We discover that his appearance, just like every aspect of his persona, was carefully calculated in the hopes of discouraging his opponents from perceiving just how mathematically oriented he actually is. Ferguson has a PhD in mathematics/artificial intelligence from UCLA, and has spent years forging his probability based approach to the game. His huge black binders are brimming with statistics and determine how he will play hands and scenarios. The results, as we know, have been fantastic. What impressed me most about him was that he went on a severe cold streak in 2002, but did not get discouraged as he "recognized a statistical deviation" when he saw one. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and, even if you are not a huge poker fan, the plots within are about as interesting as something written by Nicholas Pileggi.

5 out of 5 stars Skill Is The Name of the Game........2005-07-20

Michael writes exclusively about gambling for four magazines and Brad writes about poker for the Wall Street Journal. Both live in Brooklyn, and enjoy card playing. Poker is a game of suble deceptions. and the most skilled players come out the winners.

I know that in the game of poker it is the high stakes the gambler aims for. Me, I settle for computer Solitaire. But Black Jack takes the cake!

3 out of 5 stars Poker Aces holds up.......2006-01-15

This is a very large book with excellent photography and well written articles on each player. After reading about a dozen pages, I realized that it really seemed like I was reading a lot of the same stuff. Most players started off doing this or that, then moved to poker. They won a tournament and became interested and became pro.

Overall, I gave the book 4 stars. It provides information on many of today's poker superstars that would take a long time to search for ourselves. We get a unique look at the lives of these players and see that they are pretty much like all of us in a lot of ways...and very different.

Ron Rose always seemed to be a nice guy and he made this book with members of his family helping him. You can really feel the love and respect he has for all of these players and the poker community. If you have always wanted to know more about some of the famous poker players, this is a great book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Poker Aces is the Aces.......2005-02-06

This is a great book. It's not a how to play book but it gives me as a beginner an opportunity to see how my heros of the poker world got started and where they came from. Poker is a sport that gives me a chance to play at the same table with the poker greats. I've sat with Scotty Nguyen at the same table in Tunica. (It was worth the $500 buy in). Thank you Ron for this great insite to the world of poker. Read this book and now that no matter how old you are or whatever your financial status is at the time - poker tournaments give you the opportunity to live your dreams. Thanks again.

5 out of 5 stars Word is out on Poker Aces by Ron Rose.......2004-10-18

Card player magazine, a bi-weekly review for poker enthusiasts, likes what they see, obviously. It appears Card Player is interested enough to reprint the bio's in future issues of their magazine. I find it a bit of help as I work my way along the tournament trail where knowledge of your opponents is critical since these are the guys and gals you will have to face eventually. Clear and concise, making a good evenings read. Five Stars, Mr. Rose; Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars Poker Gurus.......2004-10-16

Poker Aces by Ron Rose is the most comprehensive and gorgeous books on professional pokers to date. I happened across the book when a friend recommened it to me. It is the ultimate resource on pro poker players - The pictures are great and it is extremely informative. What I like most is that I can use it as an autograph album. Just from walking around WPT events I can spot a player and s/he can sign his/her page in the book. So far I only have 12 signatures but I plan on filling it up.
Thanks Ron for the goregeous tribute to poker players.

5 out of 5 stars "POKER ACES" IS WORTH OWNING!.......2004-10-06

If you are intrigued with poker, you're going to love reading "Poker Aces" by Ron Rose. This poker book is truly an original! I have several shelves full of excellent books on this popular American sport, but I have never read anything quite as fulfilling as this one.

"Know your game, know your percentages, know yourself, and, know other players" seems to be the advice of nearly every good writer on this subject. The task of knowing other players, however, is the most daunting for me, because it defies good procedure. How do you organize complex poker behavior? Watching others' style, moods, eccentricities and poker "moves" is an endless fascination. The better the player, the more important it is to know all you can about him. There is a lot more to know than the occasional "tell." The person's background, education, attitude and life perspectives seem to creep into every session he plays, sometimes manifesting a much stronger influence on his actions than good tactics and game knowledge.

Ron Rose has truly filled a void for poker enthusiasts worldwide. (Like me.) I really want to learn something in depth about the champions and how they got that way. How and when did they get hooked on this game, anyway? Was it something their parents loved, as for Jennifer Harmon and Annie Duke? Or did it begin as a relief from the responsibilities of college classes as for Phil Hellmuth, Chip Reese and me. It seems "the Hook" which starts a person into playing poker somehow affects his game thereafter. "That hook" is revealed in detail for most of the champions.

But even if your hook does not affect your play in poker any more than it does in your golf game, other life situations certainly can. For example, several champions in Ron's book were refugees from troubling situations in other countries where their individualistic survival skills have made them strong tournament contenders: Amir Vahedi deserting a sure death situation in the Iranian Army; Men Nguyen, Tony Ma and Lieutenant An Tran fleeing the Communist takeover in Vietnam.

Occupational backgrounds and health histories certainly influence play, but these factors affect poker players in different ways and seem to be only a part of overall profile. Ross Boatman is a professional British actor. "Miami" John Cernuti is a fired air traffic controller. T J Cloutier a former football pro. John Bonetti and Doyle Brunson are cancer survivors. Dan Harrington and Randy Holland are lawyers.

Most of the great champions have college degrees or very accomplished backgrounds, such as Ron Rose himself, former USAF Captain, Masters degree in mathematics and successful computer entrepreneur.

Ron has also identified the guiding philosophies of many living poker greats. This is one of the best parts of his book because every champion finds a different perspective to his winning path. Why does Humberto Brenes say, "Poker is like going to kindergarten." (p. 15) Is Mark Seif realistic when he says, "You have to become your opponent...to exploit the weakness of his hand." (p. 155) Why does Charlie Shoten claim, "Being a better poker player has to do with being a better person."? (p. 158) The author has loaded this book with great insights, not only from the philosophy of current champions but also from other famous personalities such as

Lou Krieger

"Poker is a microcosm of all we admire and disdain about capitalism and democracy.

Somerset Maugham

"Poker's the only game fit for a grown man. Then your hand is against every man's, and every man's against yours."

And, General David Shoup

"The commonest mistake in history is underestimating your opponent; happens at the poker table all the time."

"Poker Aces" is one of the most satisfying poker read in years. Its layout and organization is excellent, and its pages are well written. The book is full of good photography showing 89 of today's international poker champions at play. I am looking forward to the Second and subsequent editions of this book in coming years.

    Book Description

Derrick Hough is a brilliant African-American kid who becomes a virtuoso poker player. While still in high school, he is employed part-time at the Big Blue Dog, an illegal poker club in Brooklyn, New York. The club owner, Henry Dotson, and the poker room manager, Wilbur Youngblood, teach him the game. Before long, he catches the eye of the Deacon, a high stakes player who has a stable of commission players. Derrick signs on and gains experience participating in games throughout New York. Eventually, he begins to have doubts about gambling as a profession. His sense of right versus wrong becomes more than an abstraction as he wrestles with his conscience. The Ace of Spades is an electrifying poker novel, filled with high tension poker action. It is an exciting look at a game that many play but few master. It is also the story of the making of a man.

In case you're wondering what the book is about...
Tedro Ames has lost his ranch and his sweetheart to his devil-may-care antics. He must either redeem himself, or resign himself to a future as the laughing stock of the Swiftwater area.
A gang of ruthless blackmailers is terrorizing the town and leaving black aces with their ransom notes. Tedro gets a "Black Ace," and when he meets up with another black ace victim, blacksmith Henry Kline, he knows what he must do. He'll prove himself worthy of his neighbors and of his love by unmasking the "Black Ace" Gang.
