This book is a must have........2007-07-19
This book is simply amazing. The title is absolutely perfect because Dec Hogan not only gives in depth and sound instruction on all things related to fly fishing for steelhead, he instills his own love for the sport into the reader. From the life history of a steelhead egg to his own history of how he became consumed with learnig everything he could.
Excellent color photography accompanied with diagrams and instruction, this book is a must have.
A Passion for Steelhead.......2007-03-28
I've only read this book once from cover to cover. However, from the descriptions of the incredible life of the steelhead, the rivers, the methods, flies, and habitat protection (or destruction), it is easy to feel the same passion that the author feels.
Great read!.......2007-03-09
An excellent look at fishing for one of the greatest and most difficult fish to catch on the fly. Dec really does have a passion for steelhead and conveys that well to the reader. One of the best books on the details of how to approach the water and how the fish respond to the fly. I really have enjoyed this book and will use it as a reference for years to come.
A book for my husband the fishing addict........2007-01-10
He loves this book. It is really popular amongst all of his fly fishing buddies.
Book Description
As the Great Lakes steelhead fishery moves into the 21st century, it provides an opportunity that can be considered no less than world class. Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead captures the very essence of its emergence. From its obscure beginnings to its current proactive management plans, the book covers the fishery's growth and maturity. Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead also covers, in great detail, a complete fly fishing approach to the varied challenges provided by Great Lakes steelhead and a complete guide to its important waters.
Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead has been a work-in-progress for over five years. During this period, authors Rick Kustich and Jerry Kustich have spent considerable time fishing all the major rivers and streams of the entire Great Lakes region as well as consulting with and meeting the area's top professional to discuss management plans, rivers, techniques and flies. This is coupled with nearly forty years' combined experience of fly fishing for steelhead in the Great Lakes and on the West Coast. This combination has created a unique perspective that has not yet been given to this subject. Fly Fishing for Great Lakes Steelhead will change the way we view the fishery and is detined to become the authoritative pronouncement on the subject.

Most comprehensive review on the subject!.......2002-10-11
This is a fabulous book. It covers:
- history of the great lakes tribs that gets steelie runs
- stocking programs which were and are used on these rivers
- behavioural information (if there is such a thing as static behavioural patterns in steelhead..)
- fly fishing gear recommendations
- fly fishing techniques for steelhead
- wet, dry, spey patterns for steelies
All around great resource. This is the first book I've read on the subject, although I have spent some time on some great rivers around the great lakes. Fabulous book congrats to the authors.
A Must Read for the Great Lakes Steelhead Fly Fisher!.......2002-01-15

Put this on your list!.......2000-10-07
This is a brilliant masterpiece by two of the premier steelhead experts in the great lakes region. The book is a wonderful mix of history and technical details presented in a manner that exudes their love for the sport and their reverence for the quarry and it's natural environment.
If you love fly fishing for steelhead, you'll love this book. Put it on your christmans list...

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-07-25
Hey guys, I bought this book last year because I was getting into steelhead fishing and wanted to explore new rivers, techniques, etc. I have trout fished for 15 years, I tie all my own flies, done tons of salmon fishing and was spending more and more time chasing steelhead. I wanted a book I could use as a guide so I can plan some trips. I read all the reviews prior to reading this book and again before writing my own review. I think this book has been given way too high of a rating by others. I just don't understand how they come up with those reviews.
The book is really a compilation of short stories written by folks who fished the rivers. Another review mentioned it focuses on the "feel" of fishing on each river. That would be true, it's full of very descriptive short stories about past trips (some a very long time ago). If you are looking for some winter reading to get you excited about fishing, then it's a decent choice. But if you want to learn something about the rivers, water type, popular techniques, flies, maps, access points, times of year to fish, what to look for, best sections, etc...you should find another book. Sorry to be negative, but I was disappointed.
The book comes up short compared to many of the other books I have. This is by no means a guide to rivers. I found it a little "fluffy" with very little useful material. There is a short attempt to cover flies, but they're all the basic flies you would see in any book from the past 20 years. Nothing new (or even modern really).
Minor note - I was disappointed with the quality of the book. The cover is great, but the rest of book has an old school feel (like when you pull an old fishing book out of the attic). Only black and white pictures, low quality paper, no diagrams or charts...just short story text.
Sorry fellas...it didn't meet my expectations.

Enjoyable read..........2007-03-09
Trey does a good job of covering most aspects of how fly fishing for steelhead "feels." From the best anglers to the best water to the general methods/gear he gives a good overview of steelhead fishing in general. I enjoy sitting down and reading his observations. If you are looking for a tecnical "how to" book, this probably isn't the one (get Dec Hogan's "Passion for Steelhead").
Coombs on fly patterns & steelhead fishing techniques.......2001-11-19
Coombs invites the best of steelheaders to discuss their favorate western stream, fly patterns, presentation, and memories. Very useful for patterns and places to fish.
Literally, the bible on the subject.......2001-08-27
I'm not interested in selling this product to or for anyone, and I rarely write reviews, but after reading this book I felt like I had to say something about it. The essence of fly fishing for steelhead CANNOT be encapsulated into a bound volume...the subtle nuances of the sport far exceed the explanatory capacity of the written word. That said, Trey Combs loves this sport like few others I've encountered, and writes with a technical proficiency that is almost completely missing in this genre. The historical information alone makes this volume worth spending twenty dollars of your discretionary income, and if you tie flies, you really NEED to have this book. There is a separate chapter on nearly every relevant steelhead river in the west (save the smaller, out of the way streams, which we all thank Trey for not including). The author has fished them all extensively, knows the locals, understands the ethics of the sport, and writes VERY well. The book is a smooth pictoral not only of fly fishing in western rivers but of the new conservationist mentality that simply must be adopted if we want our kids to ever have a shot at catching a wild steelhead. This one tops out at over five hundred pages, and serves not only as entertainment but as an angling period-piece as well as a streamside and tying-benchside reference. Any one who fly fishes for Pacific Steelhead should own this. On a side-note, those of you who fish for great lakes steelhead should really read this as well. The good doctor Combs calls your fish "land-locked" steelhead and doesn't really comment on the fishery aside from that. Having spent a decent amount of time fly fishing the Salmon River in upstate New York, I can only comment that Trey's technique suggestions are beneficial for anyone fishing anywhere for any strain of steelhead. Although I currently concentrate my efforts on Pacific fish due to geographic convenience, I would love the opportunity to get back to NY and fish the Ontario tributaries again.
trey is a fine writer........1999-07-05
Is this the second book which includes the section on the Klamath River in California?

It's all in the details.......2006-03-22
I picked up this book to learn the techniques of Chuck-n-Duck fishing. It explains the rigging, structure, casting, etc... It's a great help to get started, but it doesn't make up for time on the water.
It covers Great Lakes steelhead and salmon fishing and not the NW. There's a big difference between the two mindsets and techniques.
I would definately buy it again.
Tight lines.
FLY FISHING FOR SALMON & STEELHEAD OF THE GREAT LAKES.......2006-02-24
Superb book. While this book does not have the nice glossy pictures that Steelhead Dreams does, its content is much better in my opinion. I especially liked the fact that Filkins presents all fly fishing methods applicable to Great Lakes salmonoid fishing without prejudice. He covers a wide swath of Great Lakes streams and I learned a great deal about some of the variations that exist in the fishery. A must read for the Great Lakes salmon & steelhead fisherman.
Not what I wanted.......2003-07-15
This seemed like a mediocre reference to me. I returned it a day after recieving it in the mail. Perhaps it is more appropriate for the more eastern Great Lakes. Minnesota streams were mentioned on only two pages.
How to catch more Great Lakes trout and salmon.......2002-12-08
Very informative book on fly fishing for salmon and trout in the Great Lakes and why and how it is different from salmon fishing in the northwest. Full of useful information and innovative techniques. If you want to catch more salmon or steelhead in the Great Lakes' tributaries, this is must reading. For more info on Great Lakes slamon fishing go to www.TimesFlyN.com.
Hooked on Steelhead.......2000-06-23
I bought this book to improve my luck on the St. Joe River. I loved it , cover to cover. Flies for the fish, not for display or to store in another flybox. This is a guide to practical, easily tied fish getters and how to present them. I felt included as I read about the rivers I have fished here in the midwest. The author gives a clear, common sense explanation covering tackle from rods to tippets. I enjoyed his stories which put me back on streams I had fished long ago. I'm hooked!

This book is the best I have ever read on the subject. It also makes great reading
The Great Lakes Steelhead Bible!.......2005-09-30
This book is truly a masterpiece. The tips and techniques that one can glean from this work are indespensable. If you consider yourself to be an advanced steelheader, than you will, if nothing else, appreciate the fantastic photographs. I do not suggest this book as a bed-time reader however, as the pictures will more than likely make you too excided to sleep (no joke!).
A masterful work.......2002-12-19
This is a "must have" for any Great Lakes Basin Steelhead Fly Fisher. Written from One who has been faced with "4th & goal" and has made the conversion. Matt's underlying theme is that each and every one of us Great Lakes' Steelheaders MUST realize that we have to take care to preserve this awesome privilege that we enjoy. Matt shows how and why the traditional West Coast Methods are very limited in the Great Lakes Basin. He does, indeed cover everything you'll need to know and do to become a more proficient fly fishing steelheader...I promise.
Dreaming about Steelhead.......2002-06-22
Steelhead Dreams ranks up there as one the best books about the Great Lakes steelhead fishery. Author Matt Supinski is considered one of the top Great Lakes steelhead guru. In this book he shares decades of knowledge and experience. The book has chapters on mastering the rivers, different times of year, presentations and the top Great Lakes rivers.
Steelhead Dreams is a very easy book to follow and understand. This book also has the best fly recipe section I've seen in any book. There are plenty of color plates of popular nymph, egg, and streamer flies. This is an excellent book for the angler deciding to get into steelheading.
Steelhead Dreams - Review.......2002-05-23
I have been an eastern and great lakes trout and salmon fly fisher for 42 years and fished many of the great lakes rivers for steelhead the last 22 years with the fly rod. Steelhead Dreams presents a wonderful description of the immense steelhead fly fishing opportunities through outthe great lakes states and canada. The history of the fishery, comparisons to the PNW steelhead fishery, tackle, techniques, rivers, and how to approach the four seasons of steelhead fly fishing are discussed in detail to aid both new anglers and more experienced steelhead fly fishers. Matt obviously has a great love for steelhead, fly fishing, and the great lakes fishery. Excellent color pictures of the rivers, fish, tackle, and flies are provided. All great lakes and PNW steelhead anglers will benefit in increased knowledge of this fishery to enhance their angling experience. I learned some new things from Matt which will be applied this year. This is the best indepth book on great lakes steelhead fly fishing I have seen to date. I look forward to more books from Matt on the great lakes fishery.
Book Description
The tradition of tying salmon flies with feathers is a very old one, recorded in Ancient Greece, but the Victorians instilled artistry into salmon fly tying with their elaborate built-wing flies using feathers from a variety of exotic birds. After a period in which featherwing flies were eclipsed by those made from animal hairs and man-made materials, the popularity of these versatile feathers is resurging. This international guide features dressings from North America and Europe. The origins of patterns, precise dressings, and superb color illustrations will inspire fly tiers to attain new heights of achievement. Book Description
Elegant and graceful, Spey flies originated on the River Spey in northeastern Scotland and are well over 150 years old. Author Bob Veverka, passionate about Spey flies, gives us the history and background on classic Spey, Dee, Don, Eagle, and Steelhead Spey patterns, including step-by-step instructions for tying the Lady Caroline, White-Winged Akroyd Dee, and Orange Heron. The chapter on materials is loaded with insights from decades of tying and the descriptions of salmon fly materials will quickly become a standard reference for all those who tie salmon or steelhead flies. The special challenges of tying Spey and Spey-style flies--winding the long body hackles, wrapping the collars, mounting the unique wings, finding substitutes for materials no longer available--are explained and solved. Although the original patterns from the River Spey and River Dee have fathered a large, varied, and ever-growing family, a common theme ties all these flies together. "The essence of the Spey style remains the same," Bob Veverka writes, "a body of silk and fur; a long, mobile body hackle; a set of low-set wings; and a small, neat head."

Spey Flies and How to Tie Them.......2007-03-28
This book is filled with interesting history and details of Spey Fly materials and construction. The book is well written and the pictures/tying instructions are clear and precise. It should be in any serious fly tyer's library.
Spey - nicely done.......2004-03-22
Mr. Veverka has a direct writing style that is immediately accessible. This is a very, very nice treatment of a niche within a niche.
Spey flies are Salmon flies - (and Steelhead flies) of the "Spey" persuasion. Spey flies are a traditional type of Scottish Salmon fly where most of the originals call for Herron feathers. This fine book proves that the modern Spey fly can be tied well with substitutes for the original feathers.
The history of the Spey fly, the materials and examples of many classic dressings are stunning and well presented through Mr. Veverka's prose and Mr. Radencich's excellent photography. This book explores modern variations on these flies including an excellent, in-depth selection of modern Steelhead Spey flies.
The dressing guides are well written and clearly illustrated (again, featuring Mr. Radencich's excellent photographs) making the task of tying the historical patterns within the reach of most mere mortal fly tiers. The modern Steelhead Spey flies are well within the skills of any intermediate fly tier.
A Great Book for Spey Fly Enthusiasts and Anglers in General.......2004-02-25
This is a beautiful book. Part history book, part fly recipes and tying instructions. The book is worth buying for the tremendous photographs alone. These pictures highlight these elegant flies and show them as the works of art that they are. The step by step instructions are very helpful and the chapter on materials is excellent. All in all, well researched, written and published. A tremendous reference for any salmon/steelhead junkie!
