Great for Beginners.......2006-04-20
Only new to the horse training realm and this book with it's well laid out structure and diagrams has been invaluable. It is also easy enough for my 12 year old daughter to understand and use.
A Must for Every Equestrians Bookshelf.......2006-03-23
I can never get enough of books with exercises that challenge both my horse and I. This book is one that every Equestrian should have, whether for training purposes or just getting back in shape. Half of the Exercises are really basic and a waste for an intermediate to advanced rider, but then again I guess all horses can use a few lessons in the refresher courses. The last 30 Exercises focus on long lining which I use on all my younger horses. They advance from driving a horse in a yin yang pattern to change direction to Figure 8s and Lazy 8s (just a flatten figure 8). Eventually the horse graduates to haunches in and shoulders in. I find that even more advanced school masters benefit from these exercises.
Valuable addition to any equestrian library........2004-01-12
Spice up your ground work with this educational guide and develop a better relationship with your horse in the process. There are often days when we perhaps don't have the time to ride, but instead of just longeing around on the circle we could be more constructive - this book can help you. I find this book particulary useful when starting young horses.
good 4 students.......2000-05-25
I thought this book is very helpful in teaching people to use the longline.
WOW!!!.......2000-02-06
Never did I ever dream there was so much you could do with a horse free longing or long lining him. I have just purchased a racetrack thouroughbred and Lesson56 (sliding sidereins) has been particularly useful because he has a tendancy to carry his head up in the clouds hollowing his back and neck. It was almost as if when I put the sliding sidereins on he intuitively knew what I wanted him to do. Wonderful book!!!! This is one every horseman should have in his (or her) library.

Great training manual.......2007-01-30
Very easy to read and well explained book. Well worth a read. Reccomended
Lovely pictures and fires the ambition!.......2005-10-14
This isn't really a beginner's book - except as an example of something to aspire to, as it contains page after page of the most delicious equine eye-candy.
However, I disagree with another reviewer that this book is only for the professional. As well as being to some extent a 'scholarly tome', it contains some delightful anecdotes and pictures of goats, dogs, ponies and horses not of 'classical' type performing "haute ecole" movements.
In addition, it contains some simple exercises to maximise athleticism and suppleness that any eager horseman could try, whether their equine be a Shetland pony or a Baroque stallion.
Well worth reading!
GREAT, but for professionals!!!.......2002-10-25
I'm a reader from Germany and I've met Richard Hinrichs a few times. He actually gives some of my friends lessons and I think he's one of the greatest horseman of the 21st century. His book is well-structured and easy to understand and you can almost "feel" the sensitiveness in his way to train horses, but it's necessary that everybody who want to go "his" way with horses had lessons in the past and experiences with this kind of classical dressage.
So is this book really great for professionals and for look up in connection with a professional training but bad to get completely new in this science!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT!.......2002-10-25
...His book is well structured and good to understand, but it's better to have more experience in working with horses and especially in classical riding. Who don't want to ruin the horse has to take lessons by an well trained horse man, before...
But: The book is really great, check this out!!!!!

Western Horseman Reining.......2007-03-28
I love this book. It is very informative and helped me to keep the whole picture in mind. It takes many steps and the right form to do these exercises properly. Great book!
Good book.......2007-01-12
Owned horses for 15 years. Ride in western events, but not reining.
Was fortunate to be able to purchase a champion reining horse, and needed insights into reining.
Book was very helpful.
Reining by Al Dunning.......2006-03-16
Excellent. Written in a clear, concise manner and easy to follow. Not for beginners at reining. If you are with a trainer, or have a pretty good background knowledge in dressage, this book can bring a lot of things together. Highly recommend this book.
Reining.......2000-02-08
I think this is a wonderful book to learn more about the horse ,you can never know enough about the horse so , this book has 5 stars from me .

Too basic to be of any use whatsoever.......2006-08-30
I was so disappointed in this "book." It would be better advertised as a tip-a-day reining calendar for those who know NOTHING about reining.
Book Description
World Class Reining covers the entire spectrum of training and showing a reining horse and is lavishly illustrated throughout with four-color photography that gives it a “coffee table” book feel and look.
The authors, Shawn Flarida and Craig Schmersal, are two of the best reining horse trainers in the business. They’ve trained and shown some of the highest earning horses in the industry, and both men have helped their share of successful non-pros.
This book escorts the reader through all the steps of owning, riding, showing and caring for the reining horse. Tapping into their experience, Shawn and Craig offer advice and ideas for a winning training program.
Breaking down the horse’s training process into individual maneuvers, Shawn and Craig reveal training techniques that they’ve perfected over the years. The two trainers outline their methods for making sure the horse’s start is right, the training consistent and the finish polished. These are basic teaching steps that can be used, whether training a reining horse, maintaining the complete show horse or simply hoping to improve a horse’s behavior. The authors also recommend valuable show pen strategies that make the difference.

Excellent!.......2007-07-05
This book was so helpful to me! When it comes to trying to teach your horse to rein, this book helps so much! And it teaches you much more besides the basics of reining! It's a great book i would recommend it for anyone!
Outstanding!.......2007-07-05
Terrific book - covers so much more than just riding/training. My husband pinched my copy and I had to order a second copy to keep for me.
Book Description
Renowned horseman Gerhard Kapitzke clarifies how establishing an independent seat and allowing the evolution of a common balance will produce a comfortable, happy horse and unhindered lines of communication.
Customer Reviews:
Alright but not great.......2007-08-05
A good and informative book, but mostly it just talks about classical dressage/schooling training in relation to the bit and reins/contact with not a lot of detail about different bits and their effects. It is a good book if that is what you are looking for but it is nothing new and the subject is covered well in many other books that are more expansive.
Check it out of the library.......2007-03-02
This is a really great book in some ways--it discusses all kinds of bits, bridles, and reins, and it has top notch pictures of not only the tack, but drawings of how they affect the horse's tounge and mouth. I learned a tremendous amount from this book. But the book proceeds from discussing training with a snaffle to riding with a pelham for dressage. The chapter on reins near the end applies only to pelhams and dressage. I didn't catch on until nearly then that this is really a book about riding dressage. If you trail ride for pleasure as I do, you can learn from this book, but it offered me nothing about the reins and using my hands as a pleasure rider.
Check this book out of the library and read it--I can't praise it enough for what it taught me about bits. But I'm sorry that I spent money on it because I can't imagine that it's a book that I'll want to visit again and again as the years go by and I encounter other horses in my life.
The Bit and the Reins.......2006-03-15
Should be a must for every rider that ever uses a bit. Much more comprehensive understanding of how it effects the horse. The diffrent types and what they are trying to achieve. But it's all in the riders' hands. It's made me come to the conclusion of what NOT to use. Great book!!!
Book Description
This classic book demonstrates the French method of training a horse in long reins and how it is possible to attain as high a standard of schooling from the ground as that reached under saddle.

A great start to classical horse training........2007-03-09
Such a simple and straight forward approach. I know that if I take a patient approach, these tools, as outlined by Phillipe Karl, will take myself and my horses far!
Tres Bien!
To the point and clear.......2007-02-16
This book does a great job of getting to the point and letting you know what you need to do and what you should expect form your horse. There isn't any fluff that you need to short through to know what to do, and Karl doesn't skirt around training issues. Since he wrote the book in a nice progression of exercises any level of horseman can use this book and learn from it. I would recommend this book for those who are wanting to learn this technique of training your horse.
wonderful.......2006-02-24
If you're working with a young horse or are unable to ride and want to keep up with your dressage training, buy this book. Although the book is short, the pictures and text are very clear. Karl teaches basic lunging and driving all the way to passage and piaffe. His methods are gentle to the animal. Lots of diagrammed arena exercises. The troubleshooting was great. I taught my mare shoulder-in on 3 and 4 tracks in one hour. I had to stop riding due to pregnancy but I have been able to keep up with my training.
Long Reining As Art.......2005-01-25
This book focuses exclusively on long-reining, and what a treat it is. Lavishly illustrated with color photographs throughout (all taken in France), beautiful, fit horses are worked through various exercises by Philippe Karl, impeccable in his uniform and coveted golden spurs (which have to be earned) of the Saumur, so the reader sees a master at work.
The first major chapter sets the stage for all work in dealing with the gymnastics of the horse, how he moves, his anatomy, sequence of footfalls, balance, bio-mechanics, all of which are well-diagrammed with line drawings. It is supported with quotes from many well-known masters of the past (de la Gueriniere, Raabe, Licart, Kerbrech, D'Auvergne, L'Hotte).
Equipment is dealt with in the opening chapters, and one thing the Europeans have over there which we don't are surcingles with the rings further down the side of the horse for a lower placing of the lines. Everything is clean, simple, and workmanlike, of quality.
Not only do we see basic work on the long reins, but also innovative exercises as well, with clear line drawings illustrating the movements described to break the monotony of the work and to develop the horse's agility and sharpen his response to the aids.
The Europeans believe in introducing horses to jumping as well, feeling that it produces a more all-around athlete, and in this book as well, a section covers work over fences fully illustrated with those beautiful photographs.
While the main focus of the book is the long reining, there are many photographs of mounted work with which to compare to the photographs of ground work so that the reader sees how each enhances the other and how the pieces fit together.
The piece de resistance is the end of the book, the dessert of the work, the piaffe(r) and passage in hand, as well as pesade. With Philippe Karl's detailed description of how to execute the exercises, I feel that I could teach my horse to do them, too.
While this book is a unique and valuable training tool, it is pretty enough to be a coffee table book as well. The photographs alone are enough to make the reader salivate, and I would go so far as to say some are works of art in themselves.
This book came out in 1992 and did not remain in print very long, but fortunately it has been reprinted.
Excellent.......2004-05-04
Every lover of horses should read this book if they want to understand the art of perfect equine fitness. I am using it to help me train a mare recovering from a long illness. She cannot bear the weight of a rider on her back yet, but she can benefit greatly from the exercises shown in this book. The author is clear and direct; a very talented author and teacher. The photos are excellent. I have purchased many books on long reining, and this is by far the best.
