Fueled by a passion for running dogs, Gary Paulsen entered the Iditarod--the 1150-mile winter sled-dog race between Anchorage and Nome-- in dangerous ignorance and with a fierce determination. Winterdance is his account of this seventeen-day battle against Nature's worst elements and his own frailty.

Book Description

Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best..........2007-08-10

I'm an educator who has been reading and recommending Paulsen books for quite awhile now. I had given this book to my husband for his birthday and began reading it aloud to him on a road trip. Shortly into the book we were both laughing aloud marveling at both the adventure and Paulsen's writing. This book does not disappoint, and readers will find out more about both the man and the "Madness"

5 out of 5 stars The best yet!.......2007-06-14

There is a reason that this book has no less than a four and five star rating. It is the best read I have had in a very long time. Like the man sitting on the public bus, I tried to read this book sitting in a Doctor's office. I'm sure the patients in the waiting room were surprised I didn't come out in a straight jacket. Paulsen has once again created another great read. As a Siberian owner I too have some good stories of being drug down dusty roads screaming at the top of my lungs WHOA! The book is a great read even if you are not a dog owner. I love Paulsen's love for nature and his choice to rough it rather than contribute to it. I'm sure the choice was not easy and the life style a balance between wants and needs. Pick it up and read it then pass it along to a friend who needs a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-06-02

This is by far one of the most enjoyable books on the topic for a long time. The author uses humour in such a gorgeous way to make his points, I laughed so bad my girlfriend thought I'd fall off the couch when I read about both the dog-training and the race itself. Having experience with sleddogs myself, I found it very easy to identify myself with the author's experiences.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic. Read it from cover to cover in one sitting!.......2007-05-02

Once I picked it up I couldn't stop. This is an action packed, yet, informative read.

It's an inspiring, yet tragic tale of a man's battle with the unknown. Some of the things that this guy goes through are just insane! Not just for dog lovers! This is a truly great book.

5 out of 5 stars Winter Dance.......2007-04-07

Winter Dance gives a comical and yet realistic glimpse of what the Alaskan Iditarod Race is all about. After reading this account, I understood the running of the dogs and the human challenges and I laughed all along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Great story!.......2007-10-12

Lisa was the tour guide on our 9 hour Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali NP in September and did a great job. Great on stories, history, and of course her dogs. The book is just like talking to Lisa. She has a very outgoing personality and a true love of Alaska - this comes through clearly in her book as well. This book also makes a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars Great Page-turner.......2007-08-08

As others who reviewed this book, I too met the author and her husband, but not in Alaska, but in Belize, Central America of all places! After a sailing trip in a group, my friend and I had breakfast with them one morning. Off-handedly, she mentioned the experience and book. 7 months later after looking at some photos, I was reminded of it, and sent for it.
What a nice surprise! I Loved it! Not only was it interesting and inspiring, but the girl can write too! I cried several times and cheered her on. I'm passing it on to my neighbor for her trip this weekend. My only regret is that I hadn't known about her or her book before we met briefly. I would have talked her ear off with questions. So, when's the movie coming out!

5 out of 5 stars chance encounter.......2007-07-19

On a recent trip to Alaska's Denali National Park, my wife and I were fortunate to have an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who had spent the last 27 years in Alaska, first as a commercial fisherman(or fisherwoman) and now as a dog trainer/fisherman/tour guide. Only in passing, at the end of our delightful 8 hour tour, did she mention that she had completed the Iditarod (at age 42). Seeing this obviously healthy, energetic, and outgoing person and hearing this rather incredible story certainly piqued our interest. As we were leaving, she also mentioned that she had written an account of her adventure "Running with Champions". At our first stop, at the Denali Wilderness Center, we found the book and both of us read it in the next three days. I only hope that Alaskan travelers can have the pleasure of Lisa's company on the Denali tour and share in her story and extensive knowledge of this great state and National Park. If Alaska isn't in your plans, please read this book and share Lisa's love of life, dogs, and the challenges of the Alaska frontier.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book.......2007-05-31

I visited Alaska this year in early March during the week before the Iditerod and went to Lisa Frederic's book signing, bought the book, and absolutely loved it. She has the insight, humility and sense of humor to convey the exhilaration and the strain of this adventure. She was also very accessible and easy to talk to, brought her dogs with her, and read just enough of the book to make me want to buy it and read it. This book helped me understand and appreciate the race and the time I spent in Alaska. I can not recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars Running With Champions: A Midlife Journey on the Iditarod Trail.......2007-05-29

Awesome book! Very well written, enjoyable to read and inspiring. If she can do it, so can I! This book reaffirms the fact that with desire, perseverance and tenacity you can attempt the impossible and be successful, regardless of your age!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for anyone who loves sled dogs.......2004-11-08

Being partial to sled dogs myself (I am owned by two) I very much enjoyed leafing through this book. I actually bought it as a gift for my brother who adopted an Alaskan Husky last year, but I may have to buy another copy for myself!

Good portraits of the various types of dogs which nowadays run this intense and challenging race. The photos and text give you a glimpse into the world of sled dog racing, yet the book also shows the "gentler" and "calmer" side of these magnificent animals (lets enjoy the quiet times, as we know, calm or slow is not really an important part of their vocabulary!).

If you love sled dogs, get this book, it is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended read for dog lovers everywhere.......2003-04-19

Filled from cover to cover with glorious full-color photographs, Dogs Of The Iditarod by Anchorage-based professional photographer Jeff Schultz celebrates the canine participants in Alaska's famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race. These dogs' athletic endeavors, their incredible endurance, and their very special bonding with their owners are all showcased in this fantastically visual and highly recommended read for dog lovers everywhere.

Book Description

O'Donoghue tells what happened when he entered the 1991 Iditarod, along with 17 sled dogs with names like Rainy, Harley and Screech. O'Donoghue braved snowstorms, sickening wipeouts, and endured the contempt of more experienced racers. Narrated with icy elan and self deprecating wit, this is a true story of heroism, cussedness, and astonishing dumb luck.

3 out of 5 stars No match for Paulsen.......2006-03-15

Every once in a while we go up to Ely, MN, and spend a day or so dogsledding. So, prior to this year's trip, I bought a few books on the Iditarod and mushing in general.

With the Iditarod in the news right now (especially with the legally blind woman competing this year) I figured I'd learn more about that particular grueling race. This was the first book I got, as the title caught my eye and the reviews were good.

About 1/3 the way into the book, the jumping around between the various mushers and their stories started to get annoying. While I was interested in the various stories, interspersing them in a sort of "time line" format along with O'Donoghue's own experiences was not something I, myself, particularly enjoyed. There were other things about his writing style that seemed to indicate the book was written for his associates and the people with whom he raced, rather than the public at large. As a reporter, it made sense that O'Donoghue would toss in some short human interest stories of the other mushers. But he also had a few nicknames and references that seemed to be for the benefit of those in the know.

Then I made the mistake of picking up Gary Paulsen's Winterdance before I had finished this one. What a huge difference!

I reluctantly came back to My Lead Dog Was A Lesbian and am still trying to finish it. After Paulsen, it just isn't the same. Not to mention his overuse of the word "lesbian" as an adjective, almost as if he felt it necessary to justify the title of the book. OK, the dog was "confused". We get that. But halfway through the book I started noticing he was referring to her as "the little lesbian" or "the lesbian" more often than anything else (like "my lead dog" or her name), and once that sort of thing is noticed, you know, it then just sort of jumps off the page at you. So it's gotten to the point where, when I read that description of his lead dog my eyes roll and I tend to flinch. Gahhh not another one!

I'm still stuck somewhere in the middle of the Iditarod with "O'D" and just can't quite bring myself to pick it back up. He doesn't convey anywhere near the appreciation or love of the dogs that Paulsen does, and it is, after all, all about the dogs. Or should be.

If you want objective, dry facts and figures, this is your book. If you want the soul of mushing, read Paulsen.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2003-11-24

I thought the book was well written - I read at every opportunity, even my lunch time at work! I'm from South Africa, where winter day temperatures hover around 15 deg C (59 F) and I've seen snow maybe twice in my life, but this story was written in such a way that I'm burning to try mushing myself! Imagine that! I've ordered other books on mushing which, I'm hoping, will convince me that I shouldn't be so crazy.

Well worth the read and keep it on your bookshelf for future reading.

4 out of 5 stars a lot safer than taking on the iditarod yourself.......2002-04-22

This is far from the best-written non-fiction book I have ever read. The journalist's experience writing in the shorter form of articles shows through in the disjointed feel of much of the narrative. This is still well worth the read if you have any interest in Alaska, mushing, or man's working relationship with dogs. Even without those interests you may well find the book enjoyable.
At the beginning I was first overcome by the romantic notion of this amazing race, and reading through his preparations deluded myself with the fantasy of doing such a thing myself (a real joke considering how much I dislike even camping). Once the race gets underway, my most common thought was "these people are ...insane!" It was terrific and I really wanted to know how it would turn out for each and every one of them.
The title can provide for some fun too. The other day I overheard from another room Child A ask, "What is a lesbian?" Child B responded, "It is a type of dog." After much laughter I had to call them in and correct it, although I had fun imagining the kind of conversation this could cause in public at one point if they were both left with their misconception.
Since you are on this page, and reading these reviews, you are probably interested enough in the subject that reading this book would be a positive experience for you.

4 out of 5 stars I'll Just Read About It, Thanks........2002-02-07

Of the Iditarod books I've read this has to rank as one of the best. Apparently a good sense of humor and a high appreciation of irony is a necessary component of being a Musher.

4 out of 5 stars And I thought rock climbers were a bit off the scale............2002-01-31

A dynamite read even for someone who has never lived north of Key West, who has never even heard of the Iditarod, and who hates dogs. Adds credence to the fact that I never read fiction..life is a lot stranger, and a lot more exciting

I chose this book because I wanted to know more about sled dog racing. Wood does a wonderful job with photographs and text to tell the story of Dusty, a high schooler, and his sled dogs getting ready to race in the Jr. Iditarod in Alaska. This book is great for 8-12 year olds but adults will like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Kids Book.......2007-06-16

Good read-aloud for younger kids and read-alone for older kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Homeschoolers!.......2006-02-23

My son is ten and really enjoyed this book. I picked it up because he has really enjoyed the huskies on Nintendogs, and I thought he might like this tale. He did! We will be reading more of these mysteries!

Carole Marsh uses real kids in her book. As far as a work of fiction, there is not that much imagination, but the stories are VERY real, and very educational. The dialog between the kids is excellent, and that is what keeps the real interest going.

As a parent, I so appreciate how she includes maps and educational tidbits. There's a scavenger hunt at the end that can be photocopied.

I did this book as a read aloud. It was not so thick as to be cumbersome. I gave my child a copy of the scavenger hunt. He enjoyed 'finding' the items and checking them off his list.

We turned this book into a unit study and it was FUN! I did not get one word of complaint, and my son would always want to do another chapter, even when I was busy. Therefore, we finished this book QUICK!

I hope they will let me pass on this tidbit - in addition to the book, there are great pictures and educational worksheets on math and many other academic subjects over at http://www.iditarod.com

Here's the link to the worksheets and lessons - they go LIKE A DREAM with this book and are free:

    Book Description

As the Iditarod's official photographer since 1981, JEFF SCHULTZ has documented this amazing combination of frontier spirit, physical endurance, and human-dog connection in a stunningly beautiful and sometimes brutal landscape. In IDITAROD GLORY we see the best photos from a man who has dedicated himself to this race for twenty-five years, and who nearly lost his life one year in a plane crash on the job. His evocative photographs capture all aspects of the race from the pre-race frenzy on 4th Avenue in Anchorage to Burled Arch finish in Nome. Rare, behind-the-scenes photos that only the official photographer could manage, are also included.

      Book Description

"This book is terrific...I promise you, short of getting on a dog sled, traveling into the darkness, and running the Iditarod yourself, this will be the next best thing to being there."--Mitch Albom, Detroit Free Press Blinding Blizzards. Freezing wind. Paralyzingly cold temperatures. The 1,100-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race is an annual marathan run from Anchorage to Nome across the nation's most forbidding and dangerous territory. The competitors in one of the world's toughest endurance contests must be resourceful, rugged, and resilient. Sometimes, they must make life and death choices. These are the stories -- in their own words -- of the men and women who challenge the elements. "Earthy & eloquent--each story an adventure." Juneau (Alaska) Empire
