Book Description
For a soldier, knowing where you are is a matter of life and death, and so it comes as no surprise that the Army has produced the most complete, clear, and thorough guide to map reading and navigation available.
The book starts with a comprehensive explanation of the meaning and uses of maps, whether photographic, planimetric (standard-style) or topographic, then progresses to discuss the use of those maps, discussing compass techniques, celestial navigation, and determination of distance. There is a detailed section on interpreting topographic maps, with notes on tactical considerations for differing terrain, as well as determining the ease of movement through an area.
Chapters include:
Training Strategy - Maps -Marginal Information and Symbols - Grids - Scale and Distance -Direction - Overlays - Aerial Photographs - Navigation Equipment and Methods - Elevation and Relief - Terrain Association - Mounted Land Navigation - Navigation in Different Types of Terrain - Unit Sustainment
There is also information on field sketching, the tricky art of map folding, units of measure and conversion factors, map symbols, orienteering, and the global positioning system (GPS).
For the adult outdoorsman venturing into the wild, the Boy Scout, or the serious military buff, the Army's guide to map reading and navigation is an indispensable must.
Customer Reviews:
not to learn from.......2007-06-12
Found this book confusing. Maps are illegible which makes the text irrelevant. It covers way too much detail all at once instead of progressing through steps. Covers alot of info and data useful only for those in the military. May work in conjunction with a lecture course, but by itself I would be surprised if anyone learned only from this book. I am new to this so maybe it's just not for beginners.
Learn to Navigate.......2007-04-10
Study orienteering with the handbook used by the U.S. Army. This guide is perfect for any outdoorsman or for teaching Boy Scouts how to use a compass.
First choice for teaching purposes.......2007-03-07
I own several excellent books on compass use and "orienteering."
The Army version "Map Reading and Land Navigation" is the simplest and most straightforward explanation of how to get around with just a compass and a map. If I were teaching teenagers (Scouts, etc.) how to use these tools this would be my choice of text.
A 'must' for any who might need basic survival skills.......2005-08-08
Soldiers need to know how to read maps accurately, how to navigate, and how to understand all manner of maps, compasses, celestial navigation and more. So does the outdoorsman. For the military and the outdoors wilderness trekker, U.S. Army Map Reading And Land Navigation Handbook provides basic instruction on grids, scale and distance, reading overlays and using navigation equipment. A 'must' for any who might need basic survival skills.

Customer Reviews:
Antique Info.......2006-04-27
I saw the publication date, and thought it would have info useful for my son, who plays paintball. While I never expected him to use the hygeine or medical section, I was hoping for a lot more regarding movement, fields of fire, and basic tactics. Not so.
What I found was a rehash of a bunch of Cold War era FM's. All the info was Euro-centric, all the equipment was out of date (I doubt we even have 90mm RCLs in any armory inventory,) there was no real discussion of movement or signalling (despite the chapter). It did not help I found the entire manual online.
The only thing saving this book from one star is the fact there were useful references. However, unless you are utterly unfamiliar with the Army, I would NOT recommeend this book.

Airborne Medic's Review.......2006-11-20
I was a medic in the 82nd Airborne a few years after this book was published. I found it to be invaluable for review of proceedures that I had been taught in regular Army training. Like the Ranger Handbook, it is not meant to be the primary learning source, but rather a review of things a soldier had already be trained to do. Also like the Ranger Handbook, it accomplishes this purpose extremely well. It would've been of even more use, had I been an 18D - Special Forces Medic
Obsolete.......2000-07-14
This is a civilian reprint of the 1983 ST31-91B. The issue version with it's waterproof pages is a collectors item and not worth much else. Both versions are now very outdated in much of their treatment and management of illness/injury. Frankly when I first got the book in 1983, I didn't find it's sparse outline presentation of information very useful. You can find more current information, better presented in some of the newer books on Wilderness Medicine
You won't believe how thorough this is........2000-06-30
I first came across this book while training with some Army special forces and was immediately impressed. Anyone who anticipates being in a situation where medical care would be difficult to procur, ie.. a long hunt or a sailing trip, would do well to pack this book among their gear.

Book Description
As a soldier, you can be sent to any area of the world at a moment's notice. It may be in a temperate, tropical, arctic, or subarctic region. You might expect to have your personal equipment and your unit or other members of your unit with you wherever you go, but there is no guarantee, however, that this will be so. You could find yourself alone in a remote area-possibly enemy territory-with little or no personal gear. The U.S. Army Survival Handbook provides vital information and describes the basic techniques to enable you to survive and return alive should you find yourself in such a situation.
This book is widely recognized as the finest single source on the subject of survival. It is utilized by Special Operations Forces and pilots, and has also been translated for use in foreign militaries the world over. But this handbook is not just for soldiers. Civilians have discovered this detailed compilation to be a tremendously interesting and important addition to their home libraries, cars, and RVs.
The U.S. Army Survival Handbook describes and clearly illustrates a wide array of topics, including
- The Will to Survive
- Survival Planning
- Survival Medicine
- Weapons and Tools
- Water Procurement
- Wild Plants for Food
- Wildlife for Food
- Shelter
- Firebuilding
- Water Crossings
- Direction Finding
- Signaling
- Desert Survival
- Tropical Survival
- Arctic and Subarctic Survival
- Sea Survival
- Poisonous Snakes
- Knots
- Climate
- Weather
- And much more.
An outstanding resource for any individual interested in self-reliance in any type of environment on the planet, the U.S. Army Survival Handbook is a concise and in depth reference, with a wealth of excellent black and white photographs and detailed illustrations which help to make it an easy and informative read.
Customer Reviews:
U.S. Army Survival Handbook.......2007-10-05
A very accurate book. It covers a lot of information, and is therefore not very precise, but it teaches you the basics of what you need to know, and I recommend it to anyone interested in survival techniques.
SURVIVAL 101.......2007-01-26
This civilian version of the US Army's Survival Manual is an excellent resource for weekend- and dayhikers, but probably isn't what you're looking for if you want to camp/hike for long periods of time. The book covers the basics of gathering food, finding water, building a shelter, first aid, field medicine, and other survival skills, but lacks many valuable details. Its simple wisdom honestly reminds me of my old Bear Scout guidebooks. Again, this book is a priceless resource for weekend campers, but lacks the details necessary to really teach you survival skills. Serious campers: Take a look at the "real" military version (the FM 21-76) for the info you need!
THE PRICE IS LOW BECAUSE THE CONTENT IS LOW!!!!.......2006-09-01
I have both books this one and the U.S. Army Survival book. The military book is so much better even if it is 14.95. I read the reviews on the military book but I got this book first because it was cheaper and I wasted my money. They say you get what you pay for and they are right. Buy this book if you just need to spend money. Buy the military version if you really want to know about survival. Think about it who better than the Army.
The title of the book may confuse you but check out the "real miliary book for 14.95!" Much Much better.
There all the same........2006-03-05
This book is, unfortunately, suited more for "arm-chair" survivalists than people really seeking a working knowledge of wilderness survival skills. Most of the skills "covered" may help the inexperienced person feel confident until they actually attempt them. Case in point: Cordage or natural string...yes they cover it, but so sparingly as to be ineffective. "The inner bark of trees make the best fibers to use." (page 7-4) That is all it says about using bark. There is nothing about what trees are best, or how to harvest or prepare the bark. The bulk of the "skills" in this manual are lacking in a manner similar to that illustrated above.
As a former soldier and a current survival instructor I can say with the utmost confidence that this book is good for starting fires and not much else. The lack of many details provides a challenge to anyone attempting to complete a skill from start to finish. Try it and you will see! Reviewers giving it high marks clearly have never been in a true survival situation. Thumbs down.
Good info, a reference not a novel.......2006-01-25
This is a great quick reference or something to help you learn if you are with someone with a little experience. Being in the Army I found it very easy to follow and as a quick reference. But, a buddy of mine picked up one to learn some camping/hiking skills and found it hard to follow. There is a bit of lingo used and a lot of what is explained is done so in a quick to the point way. The diagrams can be a bit vague as well. This is not a "camping for dummies" sort of book. It is obvious that it was made for the Army, people with a background in the outdoors already. Anyone can learn something and if you are with someone who can explain some of the complexities you will get a lot out of the book.

U.S. Army Survival Handbook
Manufacturer: The Lyons Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 1585748609 |
Product Description
This resource is for the outdoor survivalists or future armed forces "wannabes" of our readership. It is the standard issue handbook for the U.S. Special Operations forces and pilots. Your young survivalists will love learning how to: prevent infections in wounds, build fires, find water, make weapons and tools with minimal resources, scavenge for food, survive in various climes (desert, tropics, arctic conditions, etc.), and so much more. Lots of simple illustrations and succinct text explain the vital information on self-reliance and survival. Some of the descriptions are rather graphic (particularly in the wound treatment section), so this is not for the squeamish reader, by any means. (The thought of using maggots in an open wound to prevent infection gives me the willies, but losing a limb to gangrene is not a pleasant thought either!) It is by far one of the (if not the) most comprehensive resources we've found on outdoor survival.

Book Description
Written for instructor and student use in formal United States Air Force survival training, the U.S. Air Force Search & Rescue Handbook describes the various environmental conditions affecting human survival, and details the activities necessary to enable that survival anywhere in the world. Taking as its premise the possibility that Air Force personnel might at any time be faced with an ejection, bailout, or crash landing, and thus find themselves in unfamiliar territory without long-term supplies, the U.S. Air Force Search & Rescue Handbook comprises a superbly readable and interesting general survival manual for military and civilian use alike. Detailing specific survival threats at sea, in the tropics, in the desert, in Arctic conditions, and even the psychological aspects of imprisonment, this handbook is crammed with fascinating and useful information including: emergency treatment of illness and injury; finding your way with and without maps; building a fire; water travel and fording streams; using rope and tying knots; signaling for help; mountain survival; concealment techniques; nutrition requirements; finding water and food, including capturing fish and game; predicting the weather; building a personal survival kit and much more. Encyclopedic in its presentation of information, and profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings, this priceless handbook covers almost every topic that one could conceivably encounter in a survival situation. With dozens of illustrated figures to clarify instructions, you will be left with no doubt about how to react to hundreds of different survival threats you might face in any terrain in the world. (8 1/2 x 11, 584 pages, b&w photos, illustrations, diagrams, charts)

Survival skills for the thinking man.......2006-12-11
This is less of a Search and Rescue (SAR) handbook, and more of a Survival, Evasion, Escape (SERE) manual. Mainly for people on the wrong end of a SAR mission. But, this book is one of the most comprehensive, instructive, and informative manuals of its type. It exhaustively covers the basics of Survival, has a highly informative section on world geography, excellent section on dealing with NBC hazards, and informative chapters on escape, evasion, and POW procedures. There is alot of content, and all the information is well explained. Plus, the volume is very well illustrated. I own a stack of military and civilian survival manuals; I'd have to say that this is one the most comprehensive and well written that I've come across. Highly recommended.

Very "Manualish," but Not Bad Overall.......2000-04-12
This book is written as you would expect it to be - like a textbook. However, it is very good at conveying how to survive in the wilderness. If you do a lot of camping, and want to try something different, buy this book and see if you can do as it says.
It's a bit on the thick side, but it's also everything you'd expect in a manual written by the U.S. Army.
