Book Description
From the Oxus trout of eastern Afghanistan to the small golden brown trout of British chalk streams, James Prosek has dedicated his unique painting talent to bringing to life trout from around the world, several of which are the few remaining of their type. Prosek has a passion for trout and conveys their beauty with the stroke of his brush in this collection of nearly 100 gorgeous watercolors.
The text provides a historical profile of each fish along with personal reflections by the author. Prosek savors the beauty of various fishing spots, along with the fate of the species, contemplating man's role in the extinction of animals. Both sensitive and informative, Trout of the World is a must for the library of the recreational fisherman as well as the ichthyologist.

A must own for anyone who loves fly fishing.......2004-01-26
I have been a fly fisherman (Yes I am female and also not politically correct) since I was around age 8 and after pestering my Dad for days to teach me how to cast a line he relented and a great journey began. As well as a library on the subject of fly fishing, tying flies and trout art. Which is why I am in awe of James Prosek's writing, art and passion for fishing.
This and his Trout : An Illustrated History are a must own for anyone who loves fly fishing, painting trout or simply sitting mesmerized watching trout in their back yard creek like we do or from a bridge in rural areas of the states and world.
I recommend ALL the books this young talented and knowledgeable author has written.
The trout encyclopedia has arrived!.......2003-11-11
I was not a big fan of James Prosek's first book. Next to the hyper-realism of Tomelleri, these water color illustrations did not work. Also, several were drawn from photos and were not morphologically (especially morphometrically) correct. So what? some may say.
Everything changed when I picked up a copy of Trout of the World. The style has changed just enough to make a huge difference. Sure, some of the paintings still look like he was in a hurry to meet a deadline but on the whole, I loved it. This is what we Americans (and Canadians) needed. There are other "cool" salmonids besides the stuff we are used to. Again, photos from books such as Freshwater fishes of Japan have been used as source material but I don't care. Great lateral views of some amazing fish!
James Prosek has found the right balance of color, detail and morphological information. The overall design of the book is also lovely. The lenok and taimen pictures are priceless as are the weird browns from places you would think, well...shouldn't have browns.
I think he used my Russian longfin charr as a source for his illustration. Looks very similar to the one I did some years back in pen & ink. Anyway, all fish lovers, wildlife painters and fisherman will adore this book. ANd don't just look at the pictures, read it!
Well done Mr. Prosek. I'm mad about trout, again....
Update, October 2004
The text that accompanies each illustration is fantastic. The author meets with experts of most species featured in the book. Some are academics, while others are just, well...ordinary folks who have an obsession with a certain morph, form or species of trout. The varied personalities and the strange places the author visits in quest of these wierd trout make this an unforgettable volume.

The Natural Laws of Gaining Market Share.......2006-03-03
Trout has a half a dozen bestsellers to his name. He has been a consultant for major lending corporations. Rivkin worked with Trout then branched out on his own. Together these two have put together a great book for positioning your company in today's market. Examples are take from their personal experience with companies. The first part of the book covers the latest psychology of how the mind of a prospect is influenced. It covers how the mind characterizes different types of incoming data. Part 2 goes into the repositioning of your company to correspond and take advantage of these natural laws. Trout covers the basic pitfalls in this area as well. This book is well titled (positioned)!
Five Stars
A clear message quickly absorbed.......2001-08-27
Some of those who read the original book, Positioning, found this sequel disappointingly short on new information. However, if you have not read the original, this book is worth reading, in part because it applies its own principles to communicate simply and briefly. Case studies are kept short and the central messages delivered efficiently then reinforced. Trout emphasizes the enormous amount of information and number of choices facing people and the consequent need for simplicity of message, and a clear position in the minds of consumers. Trout uniformly dislikes brand line extension, though he does not deal with counter-examples. The first section of the book, Understanding the Mind sets up the cognitive framework for the positioning approach. The second section, Dealing with Change, helps companies reposition themselves in consumers' minds. The third section, The Tricks of the Trade, goes into some specific strategies for penetrating the noise with your signal. There are deeper and newer books on the subject, but the clear message of this quickly-readable book is worth taking in.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-05-26
You can achieve better brand recognition and sales if you understand how the mind works. Jack Trout (assisted by Steve Rifkin) emphasizes that the human mind is limited, hates confusion and easily loses focus. The authors cite companies that have succeeded in their brand strategy and advertising by following these principles, and a few who failed because they didn't. The book concludes with "tricks of the trade" that you can use. In keeping with these principles, the volume is simply and clearly written, brief, well organized and focused. However, since it was published about four years ago and talks about the beginning of the information age, some of the material already may sound familiar. But if you can ignore that sense of déjà vu, the book offers an excellent summary of the relationship between how the mind works and how best to use product positioning. We [...] recommend this book to marketing mavens with inquiring minds
What's "New"?.......2001-05-22
For someone who has not read any of the authors' (especially Trout's) other books, this has some value. For that reason, I rate it higher than do many other reviewers. However, it is inferior to the original Positioning (by Ries and Trout) and adds very little (if anything) that is "new" to the concepts and comments provided in that important book. The value of the original is increased substantially when read in combination with other works such as Levitt's The Marketing Imagination and Barker's Paradigms. Because effective positioning is (literally) a moving target, those involved must be both willing and able to modify that positioning in response to rapid, sometimes major changes in the competitive marketplace. That is to say, new positioning may be necessary. The authors of this book already have an excellent title. Now all they need is a text which is worthy of it.
No new idea!.......2000-06-12
It's just a direct "copy" of the marketing classics by the same authors "Positioning". Not many new idea there.

Book Description
This mystery begins when Spinner, a New York City native who would rather pirouette than fly cast, catches the family prize--much to her boy cousins' dismay. The prize fish, a huge cutthroat trout, had been thought to be extinct in the river, and Spinner and her cousin set out to solve the mystery of how this one spectacular cuttroat survived until Spinner reeled him in.
HarperCollins is pleased to republish Jean Craighead George's fourth ecological mystery, which was first published in 1975 as Hook a Fish, Catch a Mountain.
Customer Reviews:
Great connections to life.......2005-10-20
My students monitor the river that runs through our town. We have seen the water quality improve over the years and are always looking for things we can do to help the river. This book talks about the same tests that we perform on the river. The kids really enjoy how the characters collect information to solve the mystery and how they help the local ecology.
Case of the Missing Cutthroat.......2002-10-31
The book Case Of the Missing Cutthroat is the worst book I have ever read. There is no point in the story. me and my friends joke about suffering from the Jean Craighead George disease. By the way don't read this book.
This Is A Great Book!!!!!!!!.......2001-10-19
When Spinner and her dad go fishing for the weekend her dad promises her if she caught a whopper he would throw it back, but when she catches the family prize cutthroat trout her father keeps him. These kinds of fish are very rare in that part of the river so Spinner and her brave cousin Al set off to solve "The Case of the Missing Cutthroats"!
Something fishy's going on around here.......2001-04-03
Originally titled HOOK A FISH, CATCH A MOUNTAIN, this is another Eco-Mystery from children's greatest nature writer, Jean Craighead George, author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES and MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. However, this book never quite gets to level of those classics. The story concerns Spinner, a teenager who is taken on a fishing trip against her will. After she catches a huge, nearly extinct cutthroat troat, she ends up going on a wild adventure through the woods to solve the mystery. I never could get really into the book, as Spinner is not a very likeable character for most of the story and some of it is hard to understand. But great descriptions--like an exciting lightning storm on the side of a cliff to a dangerous grizzly bear attack--come to the rescue. Any young ecologist or naturalist will want to read this story. Don't forget the other Eco-Mysteries--WHO REALLY KILLED COCK ROBIN?, about a boy who must solve the mystery of the death of his town's feathered mascot; THE MISSING 'GATOR OF GUMBO LIMBO, which concerns a girl who must track down a majestic alligator in the Florida Everglades; and THE FIRE-BUG CONNECTION. Also, Ms. George's other eighty or so novels should be more rewarding than THE CASE OF THE MISSING CUTTHROATS.
Gifted Third Grade.......2000-09-23
I teach a third grade classroom and wanted to introduce mysteries to my students. I chose this book thinking it would provide an appropriate challenge for my top readers. They staged a protest after making a list of tough vocabulary. "Crepuscular" pushed them over the edge. Out of 7 very good readers, 3 wanted to keep with the story. I recommend this title to teachers above the third grade level or for gifted students. One thing that I truly liked about this story, is the 13 year old, female, main character. She is a wonderful role model for other 13 year old girls.
Book Description
Considered by many to be the finest American combat memoir of the First World War, Hervey Allen’s Toward the Flame vividly chronicles the experiences of the Twenty-eighth Division in the summer of 1918. Made up primarily of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen, the Twenty-eighth Division saw extensive action on the Western Front. The story begins with Lieutenant Allen and his men marching inland from the French coast and ends with their participation in the disastrous battle for the village of Fismette. Allen was a talented observer, and the men with whom he served emerge as well-rounded characters against the horrific backdrop of the war.
As a historical document, Toward the Flame is significant for its highly detailed account of the controversial military action at Fismette. At the same time, it easily stands as a work of literature. Clear-eyed and unsentimental, Allen employs the novelist’s powers of description to create a harrowing portrait of coalition war at its worst.
Customer Reviews:
A Definitive WWI Memoir.......2006-12-30
Hervey Allen is at his finest in this carefully crafted memoir of his time as a soldier in France. While he is best known as author of the sweeping historical fiction Anthony Adverse, which was a best seller in the 1930s(and later a pretty mediocre movie), he proves in Towards the Flame that he is also able to communicate great depth with an economy of words. This book illuminates that far away time in which young men went off the to fight the Last Great War for reasons that now seem so trivial and also gives a wonderful sense of the French countryside from the perespective of a young soldier. I believe that this book is a hidden treasure of American literature that deserves to be rediscovered.
Perhaps the Finest American Memoir of the First World War.......2005-06-14
Hervey Allen's memoir is certainly one of the finest personal narratives of World War One, and perhaps the best American memoir of that war. In my opinion, it is a neglected classic. The narrative covers his unit's march from the area around Chateau Thierry in July 1918 to the Fismes/Fismette area in August. The book begins with Allen's unit on an almost bucolic road march through unspoiled French countryside, and ends with its virtual decimation in Fismette. As the title suggests, the closer Allen and his comrades get to Fismette, the more intense the action, until they are literally facing the fire of a German flamenwerfer attack. The story ends abruptly; in a preface to the second edition, Allen compares the ending to a filmstrip burning out suddenly.
Allen, a novelist and poet, was a keen observer; he gives the reader a vivid picture of what it was like to be an AEF soldier in France. Particularly compelling are his descriptions of the shattered homes, farms, and buildings that his unit occupies as it moves forward, and what they tell him about the original French owners, and the Germans who, in some cases, have left the premises just minutes before.

A beautiful book and well written as well.......2006-08-29
This is for people that truly value a book for its art. This is an almost magical work with scenes of trout, insects, and natural history. The illustrations in this book are some of the best I have ever seen. I was surprised to find the illustrator and writer are the same. A great book for your coffee table, library, or classroom. The only problem I have is that I did not find it sooner. ¸
A primer in natural history.......2000-07-14
I found this book in the library and kept reading it so long I paid twice the cost of the book in fines. Now, I've ordered my own copy because I cannot be without it.
Written in the style of Aldo Leopold's _Sand County Almanac_, this is a focused study of stream ecology, But it is not a dry book of science. It is a story of a stream through four seasons. The author writes of a place he knows well through a lifetime of hiking and fishing, but where he can still experience childlike wonder. Through his narrative, the reader learns about the fish, the water, plants and insects, birds and beasts, and the relationships that sustain the cycles of life and death along a stream. The author offers perspectives that develops a sense of ecological responsibility.
NOT ONLY FOR FISHERMEN!.......2000-04-03
This book is a delight for anyone interested in the outdoors & nature. The title sounds like the book would be for undergraduates in Fish Culture; however, it is a happy surprise to find that David M. Carroll has written a wonderful, lyrical account of the life of trout including the environment and all the living creatures, critters, and flora that enter the facinating world in the life cycle of the fish. His lovely drawings add to the naturalists' delight! His account of fishing for these elusive fish should catch the fishermen among his readers, too!
Book Description
Shaking his head in disgust, Commander Chance Abbott, the skipper of the USS Trout, lamented, ÂYou line up a submarinerÂ's dream shot and the torpedoes blow up halfway to the target. ÂIn theory, a torpedo with a magnetic detonator only needs to get close to the target, said Ron Mercer, the TroutÂ's executive officer. ÂYeah, in theory. But theyÂ're either running too deep and passing under the target or blowing up on the way to the target like ours just did, said Abbott. He shook his head. ÂThey never really tested these things. At the beginning of the war, defective torpedoes were more the rule than the exception. AmericaÂ's first line of defense was shooting duds. Beginning with the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, relive the tales of the USS Trout; defective torpedoes, the liberation of Philippine treasure, MacArthurÂ's daring escape from Corregidor, exciting detailed submarine battle sequences, as well as the Battle of the Coral Sea, Jimmy DoolittleÂ's Tokyo Raid, and the Battle of Midway.

Fly - Fishing With Trout - Tail: A Child's Journey.......2006-04-24
Wow! What a book for a young boy or girl that loves the Outdoors, Nature and Fishing. A must read for those parents that partake in Flyfishing and want their little ones to follow in their footsteps. Amazon's reading level of 8 - 12 is not accurate - it should be 6 - Adult! The subtle journey through Trouttail's eyes teaches all of us the love of Nature, Conservation and appreciation of the Outdoor Experiences one can have outside the bustling Cities and Towns most of us live in. We all know that a photo is worth a 1000 words - well, these photos are worth 10,000 words and are beautiful and unique at the same time. The text contains more information than you realize, so you must read Trouttail several times. Even I had a difficult time finding a Fly hidden on each page - see if you can? This book is deemed to become a Classic on Fly Fishing once the word gets out. Every Fly Fisherman young and old should own a copy!

A motivational fly fishing story for children and parents.......2003-05-09
If you have any positive thoughts about introducing a child
to the beautiful and life-long quiet sport of fly fishing, this new book achieves the mission of introducing the sport through wonderful on the water pictures of a young person, called Trout-tail, fly fishing. The pictorial story introduces the beauty of the sport by showing many of the charming attributes of enjoying the beauty of the places where fly fishing is pursued.
The written story works well with the photos and talks about the traditional culture of the sport, such as carry out what you carry in, and catch-and-release etc. The story journey then goes on to introduce the equipment utilized, as well as picturing and talking about flies and the new hobby of young Trout-tail actually tying his own flies!
It is a wonderful gift for any household with young boys and girls.

This book was so exciting I didnt want to put it down........2006-01-14
Richard Trout is a great writer and this is his best book yet. This book takes place in an Alaskan mountain range. They ride on dog sleds in a blizzard and get chased by bears. My favorite part was when they get trapped in the cabin and a bear breaks in and tries to kill them.
"well written thriller".......2006-01-14
This book was greatly written. With great detail, the plot takes you all the way around the world to explore and discover new things. The adventure is one you would be glad to experience. I invite you to read this astounding book. My favorite part is when R.O. attempts to climb to the top of the totem pole.

This book is a great adventure story that will keep your attention. It is highly recommendended for young adults by one.I like this book because there is alot of suspense and thrills. I'm not much of a reader but this book was awesome. You won't be able to put the book down. Jacob Miller
High Adventure in Alaska.......2005-10-16
Author Richard Trout, also an environmental biologist, consultant and college professor, is back in full gale force with his fourth novel in the MacGregor Family Adventure Series. High adventure in the Alaskan wilderness takes us bounding through an obstacle course of environmental, political and historical intrigue with the exuberance of huskies.
We join in the adventures with Trout's invitation into an icy wilderness, 788 A.D. In the Alps, we meet Charlemagne, his scout, the Duke of Bavaria and an old priest. What is the Cross of Charlemagne and why are his scout and the old priest so willing to protect it with their lives? The Prologue ends in a blizzard of snow and ice, obscuring events that will take another 1,000 years to reveal.
Enter the MacGregor kids: Chris, Ryan and Heather. The year is 1999 and they've hitting the ground running, or rather dog sledding, as the novel opens. Fighting off angry grizzlies, discovering an unusual, vacant cabin, crashing into a whaler, the kids set the pace of the novel. Who are the three Russian Orthodox priests that Ryan befriends and what are they doing in the Alaskan wilderness? An elegant, elderly lady might have some interesting information for them, if they can find her alive.
Meanwhile, Drs. Jack and Mavis MacGregor have their own grizzlies to tackle in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge: a highly skilled, highly paid group of eco-terrorists. Sprinkle a few special agents around and add a cold-hearted killer with a personal political agenda into the mix and the dangers of working in Alaska are realized in full. Will the MacGregors and the FBI stop the eco-terrorists in time?
This novel is rich with facts, which Trout expertly weaves in with fiction. An Alutiq tribe member befriends the MacGregor family, offering cultural history. We meet characters throughout the Alaskan escapades that teach us about the environmental and political challenges dear to the wilderness. We learn historical history from the three Russian Orthodox priests. Trout offers an Alaskan tapestry of tales.
Written for young adults, adults too will enjoy this romp through the frozen wilderness. After all, I've got the first four books on my shelf and look forward to more.
