Book Description

Based entirely on research from peer-reviewed journals and randomized controlled trials, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is a complete program to prevent and rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries for athletes and non-athletes alike. In less than 100 pages, readers will learn precisely how the rotator cuff works, what can go wrong with it, and then are guided step-by-step through an evidence-based program that takes just minutes a week to complete. Drawing from the latest rotator cuff research, Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff is especially useful for those who have been diagnosed with either a partial or full-thickness rotator cuff tear, experience shoulder pain, do upper body weight lifting, play a sport or have a job that involves repeated arm motions above shoulder level, have been diagnosed with "impingement syndrome," or for anyone simply wanting a healthy and properly functioning rotator cuff.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06

This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.

I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.

I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.

5 out of 5 stars Johnson is "magic"!.......2007-07-09

This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.

The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.

5 out of 5 stars Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13

I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.

Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.

I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.

Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.

This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2007-05-11

Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.

Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.

I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.

The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description

Kerri Strug comes to life as the brave young gymnast who secured her place in the Olympic pantheon for her brilliant success under fire. The 88-pound, 4-foot 9-inch Strug seems larger than life as she follows her personal dream-from her home in Tucson, Arizona to years of tenacious training with several different coaches, and finally to her amazing vault at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-01-27

This is definitely the best gymnasics biography I've read! In this book, published right after the 1996 Olympics, Kerri really opens her heart to the reader...we learn about her passion for gymnasics which started at a VERY young age, her progression through the sport, what it was really like training under Bela Karolyi, and about her family. One thing that impressed me about Kerri was how she is truly self-motivated...I think many gymnasts are pushed by parents living their own dreams through their children, but this was NOT the case with Kerri. It was refreshing to read of the loving, supportive family she has, and how completely sane her parents are (as opposed to other gym parents we've heard about, like in "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" which I also think is an important book). I think people who are THIS driven, as Kerri is, are incredibly rare...which is why she flourished under Bela's harsh training instead of cracking like so many other girls did. She is honest about the often-times brutal training under Bela, but obviously loves and deeply respects both him and Marta and she gives them credit for contributing to her successes. There are great photos included of Kerri through the years. Awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars This book deserves 10 stars.......2004-05-12

Before I read this book, I didn't really know much about Kerri, except that she had hurt her foot doing a vault at the Olympics, and had somehow become America's darling.

But after reading this book, I now know Kerri for who she is: a marvelous gymnast who was always in the shadows and never seemed to pull everything together during competitions. How she came so close to making the All-Around competition in Barcelona, only to be edged out by .14 of a point.

This book will make you laugh, cry, and wonder how she could come back after injury upon injury and still continue gymnastics. This book will tell you about her joys and triumphs, and her defeats and despairs.

Since I have read this book, Kerri Strug has become my favorite gymnast, not just because of what she did at Atlanta, but what she did to get there. I promise you, if you read this book, you will be left with a profound respect of the girl who could continue on, despite the pain and setbacks.

My only recommendation is read it!

5 out of 5 stars This book is so worth reading!!!!!!!.......2003-05-04

I do gymnastics and love to read about is so this book is great for me! This book is full of pictures and useful information. It has from when she was a baby to when she stuck that wonderful vault. If you are looking for a good gymnastics book or just a good book I would buy this one. If you do buy it I hope you enjoy reading it like I did!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!!.......2003-02-10

I really enjoyed reading Kerri Strug's autobiography. Her legendery vault, the Yurchenko with a one-and-a-half twist, helped the USA 1996 Olympic Team win a gold medal! I really thought this was a terrific book. Kerri talks about her triumphs, struggles, victories, experiences and so much more. She tells her complete story, starting from baby years, all the way up untill after the 1996 Olympic Games. Her story is a great inspiration to all gymnasts. If you enjoy gymnastics or are a fan of Kerri Strug, then this book is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars The best book EVER!.......2000-06-23

Okay, this is the best book on planet Earth. I loved it so much! I've idolized Kerri ever since '96. I got the book for Christmas. I read it, and I absolutely was amazed. A whole new aspect of her came through in the book. It's like she was my best friend and she was spilling her guts to me. I mean, there are tons of things in the book that I have never known about. I cried, I actually cried, when she fell at the 94 US Classic. I almost cried tears of joy when her dreams came true. I really connected to her! THE MOST INSPIRING BOOK EVER! It inspired me! It changed my life. It made me look at life a whole new way. I mean, all the things Keri went through make me feel lucky, make me feel like I can do anything!

Book Description

Grab a pencil. Relax. Then take off on a mind-boggling journey to the ultimate frontier of math, mind, and meaning as acclaimed author Clifford Pickover, Dorothy, and Dr. Oz explore some of the oddest and quirkiest highways and byways of the numerically obsessed. The thought-provoking mysteries, puzzles, and problems range from zebra numbers and circular primes to Legion's number--a number so big that it makes a trillion pale in comparison. The strange mazes, bizarre consequences, and dizzying arrays of logic problems entertain readers at all levels of mathematical sophistication. The tests devised by enigmatic Dr. Oz to assess human intelligence will tease the brain of even the most avid puzzle fan. They feature a host of mathematical topics: geometry and mazes, sequences, series, sets, arrangements, probability and misdirection, number theory, arithmetic, and even several problems dealing with the physical world. With numerous illustrations, this is an original, fun-filled, and unusual introduction to numbers and their role in creativity, computers, games, practical research, and absurd adventures that teeter on the edge of logic and insanity. 5 out of 5 stars The Mathematics of Oz: Mental Gymnastics from Beyond the Edge.......2007-05-13

Awesome blend of stories mixing in some interesting puzzles. Being a Kansas girl, I was intrigued by the entertaining story line set in the "Sunflower state". My son graduated from the Unversity of Kansas and there is a fictional story of the campus in the book that builds toward a puzzle. I gave the book to my son on his 25th birthday and I had marked the KU story. He turned to it and was totally endeared to the book. Couldn't be a better present for anyone who loves Kansas or puzzles. Just great!!!

4 out of 5 stars What is interesting and what solvable?.......2003-10-14

I prefer mathematical puzzles that have two features:
- they are interesting (i.e. they have that difficulty that make them worth trying to solve);
- they are solvable without developing a whole new theory and without writing program code.
In this book most problems that are interesting (very interesting and intriguing, I must admit) are not solvable in the foresaid sense, and most solvable ones are not interestin. Of course, a few are both. The picture sequences to be completed are very original, and sometimes difficult, examples of QI tests.
However, in spite of that slight flaw, I have really enjoyed reading it. It may depends on my appreciation of Oz novels and movie, and even if this book is not likely to mark the history of mathematical entertainment, it remains a worthy reading.

5 out of 5 stars A true mathematical wonderland.......2003-08-28

This wonderful mathematical puzzle book has over 100 puzzles sure to delight readers -- from kids to adults. The problems include: mazes, sequences, probability, and more. Most puzzles are very clever and fun. I liked considering the yellow-brick road that crosses America. How many bricks would it take? I also liked the zebra numbers and circular primes. Legion's number is a number so big that it makes a a billion look puny.

Anyone who has pondered the vastness of our mathematical universe will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Math Puzzles from another Universe!.......2002-09-14

I found the puzzles and problems in this book to be original and varied, and with a wide range of difficulty levels. I enjoyed the fact that some puzzles might actually have more than one answer, which leaves room for healthy debate and for better understanding the way different people think. I think this book can be enjoyed by readers of different levels of mathematical sophistication. For example, a freshman in high school could skip the more difficult problems, like the one on Ramanujan Congruences, although this is one of the most interesting chapters. My favorite chapter is one that poses a statistics-like question, dealing with bones thrown into a pit. You have to figure out the ratio of the long piece to the short piece. Here's a sample of other chapters that I really enjoyed:

1. The Yellow-brick Road
2. An Experiment with Kansas
8. The Problem of the Bones
16. Omega Sphere
28. Legions' Number
29. The Problem of the Tombs
35. Prime-poor Equations
36. Number Satellite
43. Ramanujan Congruences and the Quest for Transcendence
49. The Jellyfish of Europa
99. A Connection Between Pi and e
103. The Scarecrow Formula
107. The Omega Crystal
108. Attack of the Undulating Undecamorphs

I've already spent hours reading and rereading the book, and showing it to friends, and I know I'll spend many hours more!

5 out of 5 stars Something that Works!.......2007-09-16

What a great surprise. Here is an inexpensive manual with clear definitions, excellent photographs and diagrams as well as sections on what not to do, what can go wrong and how to fix it. The exercises build from basic to more advanced. I found her half-halt method to be simple and subtle but worked to stabilize even my NASCAR-minded mare. She suggests multiple methods to determine the correct timing to apply the aides. This book was recommended by a friend and I believe it is the most user-friendly, helpful book in my library. I'll pass the recommendation along to you wholeheartedly.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars sports psychology library --- gymnastics.......2007-07-25

It was very helpful to me because it gave me tips on how to improve with mental skills. It gives tips on how to prepare yourself before a competition and be mentally strong.
Very good book -- I would recommend it to other gymnast.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Information.......2007-01-04

This book is short and easy to locate the needed information. However, I was using the material for a younger child (under 12) and some of the suggested activities were too difficult to implement for a younger child. Because of the organization of the book it made it easy to locate exactly what information was needed. Many simple steps and explanations on various methods in overcoming mental blocks. These methods could be used not only for sports issues, but for issues individuals deal with on a daily basis. Apropriate for older children or adults and well worth the inexpensive cost.

5 out of 5 stars I'll give this book a 10 for being so imformative and useful.......2004-02-24

Whether you're a competitive gymnast on the club level or a collegiate gymnast, or even just a beginner, you will benifit from this marvelous book. It was written by two former gymnasts, Peter Vidmar and Karen Cogan, who also happens to be a sport psychologist. It will help you improve on your performance by learning how to play the mental game of gymnastics and gives you many strategies to practice and to use to make yourself an even better gymnast that you were before.

This book gives you an instruction of the mental side of gymnastics, and then goes on to give tips about relaxation and energization strategies, positive thinking, mental imagery, developing focus and concentration, and goal setting to get where you want to be. The book then goes on to give individual chapters to each apparatus, highlighting the type of skills needed, mental skills that will help you on that apparatus, and other useful tips. But that's not all- you'll also get information on overcoming mental blocks and fear, dealing with fans, pressure, and fame, keeping the fun in gymnastics, body image and eating disorders, parents and coaches, and much more. A terrific book for any gymnast that has fears, anxiety, or any thing like that. Peter Vidmar and Karen Cogan have done a beautiful job writing this book. I have visited Karen Cogan 4 times for my own fears in Gymnastics and she recommended this book. It was great! It really helped me in my gymnastics, and now, I finally have a series on beam! I highly recommend this book to all gymnasts and coaches!

I am a first time coach, and this book has been a true gift for me! Every idea is wonderful and the printable forms have been so helpful. I wish I could say more, but I have 19 girls waiting for me to begin practice right now. A practice that will be organized, consistent and well worth their time thanks to Pam's book.

    Sincerely,
A Cheerleading Coach from Washington State

4 out of 5 stars Straight to the Top.......2005-09-16

This book is a completely comprehensive look at coaching a cheersquad. It is not specific to the United States, so most of the suggestions, strategies and helpful hits can be used in countries outside of there (for me specifically Australia). Just starting a squad is must less daunting with the assistance of this text, as it clearly lays out an idiot-proof way to work through each step. Thanks heaps!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2005-01-24

These authors covered every detail of starting a cheer program or improving an already successful cheer program. The forms they provided were an excellent resource. Thanks for taking the time to compile your experience in coaching cheerleading.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for.......2006-10-01

This book was completely useless to me. I was hoping for a book that would have interesting and varied arena exercises for young horses such as turns on the forehand and rear, spirals, backing two steps- forward two- back three- forward three, etc. Things to work on when you can't get out on a trail.

Instead, it is a simple book covering such basics as how to halt, how to walk, jog, lope. Apparently it is intended for someone who is entering a western pleasure class. Not what I was looking for.

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2005-05-28

This book is completely useless for someone learning western riding. It has detailed exercise description with no information about how to actually do them. For example, several pages are dedicated to walk-jog-walk exercises, with no description about how to get a horse to transition from a walk to a jog and from a jog to a walk.

For the circle exercises the advice it to "use your inside leg to activate the inside hind leg (I assume of the horse)" -- but HOW?

I learned nothing from this book and it was a complete waste of money.

    3 out of 5 stars Red Ribbon.......2000-09-19

I thought the book was good over all, it had good suggestions on things to do, but In the first Exercise the Halt it says " the halt should be square and balanced" So how do you accomplish that? I thought that half the lesson and been left out.

    3 out of 5 stars instructions.......2000-04-07

i found this book helpfull and easy to understand. it has the necessary instructions to get one on the way to western pleasure riding.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......1998-12-22

If you have just begun western riding- like me, you will love this book. I had been riding English for 6 years, and found that western was a bit differant. This book helped me get my balance and courage. I really reccomemend this book!

    Book Description

    I am so scared.
I feel like I'm silently screaming for help
and no one pays any attention of tries to hear me.
    I can't control anything anymore.
It's all out to get me!

When Kim can't handle things, she eats. Then she purges. Sometimes she fasts. She knows she isn't as thin as the other girls on her gymnastics team, and she's worried that now, away from home for the first time as a college freshman, she won't be able to live up to expectations -- especially her own. Eating is the one thing she can control -- or can she?

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

    2 out of 5 stars Give me a break.......2006-11-30

This book only got 2 stars because of the fact I actually finished it, I don't usually finish books.
This book is so annoying. No one with a real eating disorder is that happy about EVERYTHING, she happy about her parents, and some guy, and school, gymnastics and life...if you're so happy then why would you need an ED? Plus there is no way to get to 75lbs by just bulimia, maybe there is, but not the way she was going at it. There was no account of excessive excercise either. And getting so hungry she ate dog food???? Give me a break!
It was an OK book until it got to her "recovery" she was just too happy about that too. Read Diary of an Anorexic girl, I mean most people will fight recovery. This book is just so pathetic, she sounds like a 12 year old girl not a college freshman. I in no way could relate to this girl and usually I can. Thank god the book was short other wise I would have completely wasted my time.

1 out of 5 stars The original James Frey .......2006-02-02

Brought to you from the author of Go Ask Alice... yeah, right.

This is probably not the first great hoax in publishing history, but I'm sure it's one of the most successful.

In spite of the fact that the actual source of this book has long been revealed and known, the publishing company continues to brazenly assert that this is a genuine document. It's as ridiculous as the continuing insistence that The Amityville Horror is a true story, too.

It should take any literate adult no more than one and one half pages to determine that this is neither the language nor the syntax of an adolescent/young adult.

It is a known fact that this shameless propoganda was the work of Beatrice Sparks, a Mormom activist who created an entire series of these books, in which children are destroyed by the evils of homosexuality, premarital sex, drug abuse, satanism, etc.

Without diminishing what positive impact this book, or any of the others, may have had on impressionable youth, and without condemning its good intentions (is anyone in favor of having AIDS?), these books are complete rubbish.

Like Mr. Frey, the intentions are not the point.

The point is that these books are being published as nonfiction.

    And they are lies.

3 out of 5 stars Kim: empty inside.......2005-10-17

In the book, the main character, Kim can't always take what is thrown
at her. She feels pressure to get a boyfriend and get into the right
college and compete in gymnastics. To help her feel better and in
control of her life, she eats and then feeling bad about it purges. Kim
sometimes feels that she is not as skinny as she needs to be for
competing in gymnastics. Her eating disorder gets out of control when
she leaves for college. When she gets to UCLA she feels very lost and
thinks the only thing she can control is her eating. During the book
Kim goes up and down with her eating. When she becomes sad, she eats
like she has been starved and then throws up. When she is happy the
throwing up pauses but not for long. When she can't handle something
food is her friend. In the book she struggles with fasting and
purging.,       The book is a little bit of a slow read but in the end you
will be happy about what she does to help herself. Sometimes you will
not be able to put down the book and others times you will think why do
I need to know this? It is the perfect book to take on a trip with you.
The book may  help you never want to become anorexic. The way the story
is told will make you want to help Kim more than anything in the world.
Kim makes it seem like everything bad is happening to her and she can't
take it. In the end you feel hope for Kim and you will be glad you read
    it.

    1 out of 5 stars VERY INACCURATE!!!!.......2005-08-29

AS A GYMNAST AND FORMER ANOREXIC/BULIMIC, THIS BOOK IS VERY INACCURATE. FIRST, THIS DOES NOT PORTRAY THESE REAL DISEASES.THE INTENISITY IS FAR FROM WHAT YOU READ IN THE BOOK.YOU HAVE NO TIME FOR BOYS,FUN,FAMILY,ETC. ANYWAYS,AT THAT LEVEL OF GYMNASTICS,KIM WOULD NOT HAVE TIME FOR ANYOTHER THINGS BESIDES GYMNASTICS. SHE WOULD BE IN THE GYM FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS, 6 DAYS A WEEK. THE ONLY REASON THAT THIS BOOK GETS 1 STAR IS BECAUSE AT LEAST IT HAS A STORY LINE. I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS BOOK AT ALL.
