Customer Reviews:
nice read but not sufficiently hands on.......2006-02-21
At first, i was enthoused by the uplifting style in which the book is written. That is an asset in itselft as it contributes to giving you a positive attitude. But once you have finished the book and try to elaborate some plan to implement some long term goals, you reckon that there is no specific help on how to define short term goals which is in essence the most important message of the book. It is apparent that the autors have extensive experience sport psychology and i think the book is actually more helpful if you are into weight lifting than into trading as it is somewhat more difficult to formulate goals that relate to emotional issues than easily measurable results in sports (power, speed etc.) and fixing short term monetary goals is counterproductive as the book states itself as the most important thing in trading is consistency. So there is no information on how to put the ideas into practise which considerabely decreases the practical value of the book.
Light reading.......2004-01-01
Buy Elder's trading for a living. This book is so light that I read it in one night and listed it on Amazon to sell the next day.
The concept is okay. The book is not........2003-09-07
I did have great expectation on this book. I had been quite disappointed. Instead of elaborating on the similarities for playing pro sports and trading, it's more like a business management book emphasizing on setting achievable, strategic, measurable, controllable, flexible and positive goals of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly time span. I am not kidding. The authors did put tables of the above goals for you to fill in te blank. Though the authors also had chapters on motivation, concentration, pressure handling, routine setting, loss handling stuff but the coverage of them, in my opinion as a veteran trader and frequent trading book lover, were far from sufficient and sophisticated to help traders to turn themselves into a pro athlete and win this highly competitive game. The analogy is brilliant, but is only limited to the title. The content is not. It's just like reading one of those common psychology or life management books.
get your psyche straight!.......2003-02-14
this book gives you a step by step approach to getting, and maintaining the proper mind set needed to trade successfuly.
easy reading, and recommended.
Trader, Know Thyself.......2002-04-16
For both new and experienced traders, The Trading Athlete is a welcome addition to the subject of understanding the importance of trading psychology. Trading is a very difficult profession if you are not mentally prepared. By using sports analogies and comparing the athlete to the trader, the authors provide an easy-to-understand approach to the subject matter. Having traded equities and futures for the past eight years, I've concluded that conquering trading psychology is 90% of the battle to becoming a consistent and profitable trader. Trading psychology is such a critical aspect of trading that I included two chapters on the subject in my book Day Trading on the Edge: A Look Before You Leap Guide to Extreme Investing.
The authors, a sports psychologist and online trader (with prior trading experience at the CME and CBOT, and currently a trading coach) have produced a clearly written, easy-to-read book that supplements books by Dr. Alexander Elder, Ari Kiev, and Mark Douglas among the best books on trading psychology.
The major subjects covered in this book include:
- Mental keys
-Confidence building and dealing with failure
-How to handle losses
-Replacing negative thinking with productivity
-Handling pressure
-Why trading for revenge is a disaster
-How to overcome fear and prevent panic
-How to concentrate
-Enjoying your success
Each chapter is sprinkled with appropriate quotes that bring home the key points.
The Trading Athlete provides a self-evaluation form covering: goal setting, confidence, positive trading attitude, energizing, anger management, pressure, concentration, and flow. It also provides actual relaxation strategies to reduce stress
Also included in an appendix is a summary of the key points (4-10 or more) of each chapter. There are also very useful worksheets that can be used to record your own mission statement including your strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Additional worksheets are provided for recording your trading rules, goals for the week, month and year with checklists to determine if you are meeting them. Another worksheet covers a weekly performance log for recording each trade, its outcome and your comments about it.
In summary, the Trading Athlete, if read carefully and if you use the worksheets provided, will provide you with a solid foundation for understanding yourself and conquering your trading fears and inadequacies. Ultimately your trading should improve for the better. This book is an excellent resource for all traders. I highly recommend this book.

Bunch of succes stories, but no real advice.......2007-01-16
The author provides many stories about people who operate in a zone with peaks of performance but provides little advice on how to enter this zone.
absolutely worth reading.......2005-01-16
as a college student athlete, i was assigned to read this book for a sport psychology class. I found it very interesting and followed the phases of each section. After reading this book, i have found myself applying many of its lessons in my athletic performances as well as everyday tasks. This book was borrowed from my professor and even as a broke college student I can't wait to get my own copy in the mail. I highly reccomend this book.
Outstanding book - enhanced my sales career.......2004-07-06
Although this book appears to be only for sports and the athletic minded, Dr. Garfield also provides examples on how to use these techniques in business as well.
I used Dr. Garfield's techniques in the late 1980's and it made a significant difference in my sales career. I blew past previous limits and won sales contest after sales contest. The techniques work.
I noticed a previous reviewer mentioning NLP techniques. I know of many NLP practioners who wholly endorse Dr. Garfield and in the techniques are similiar. Both involve visualization. Dr. Garfield offers techniques that are not quite as complicated and deliver the same or similiar, or in some cases, better results.
Highly recommended if you can still get a copy. I also have a set of tapes by Dr. Garfield that he did for Nightingale-Conant back in the 80's.
Still a winning formula.......2004-07-03
How unfortunate that this great book with it's fantastic principles has been left behind in the wake of newer technologies like NLP.
I first became aware of Dr. Garfield back in 1984 when I was preparing for an athletic competition. I bought Peak Performance, began doing the exercises starting with volition using clusters and the other visualization exercises and it made a huge difference.
When going through a box of old books, I came across this book and started doing the exercises again. Still a winning formula, in my opinion as effective as NLP and a definite under-rated and nearly forgotten but excellent book.
The One to Have.......2002-06-07
This book really is one the definitive discussions of mental training from the first chapter where Charles Garfield describes an actual experience with, and the remarkable results of, Soviet-style mental training. The exercises are generally excellent (although I found some of the exercises for planning to be a little bit difficult to follow). I believe that if you're serious about this subject, you have to read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Mental Athlete is the most beneficial book I've ever read!.......2006-02-24
This is the best mental training book that I have ever found. In 1985 I was on the National Team for my sport, but I was not up to par for the other aspects of my sport. I found "The Mental Athlete" and it totally changed my athletic life. The book teaches you how to visualize, do relaxation exercise, run mental training programs, etc. Even though it is not specific to my sport, you can incorporate the techniques into any sport. It is an amazing book. It is not a boring, hard to understand technical book, it is written very well. This book took me from a good athlete to a National Champion (many times over). This book is worth it's weight in gold.

Paying it forward........2007-06-30
I read this book several years ago, and I think I received it as an incentive for continuing my subscription with Runner's World magazine. Although I've tried, I'm not sure the information in this book has helped my amateur performances. While the information in Mental Training is helpful, I think it lends itself more to the demands of professional athletic success. And though I continue to experiment with viusalization techniques (in all aspects of life), my practical expectations are now a bit more realistic.
it's a good book, but..........2006-02-12
I have read this book and others with the similar perspective. It's a quite applied volumen, but I prefer other with a theoretical+practical perspective... I have used it with my students, but I have needed other books...
Mental Training for Peak Performance.......2005-08-30
A well researched and written book with some very sound advice. It covers relaxation, imaging and visualisation with practical examples of how to go about the processes. It also explains the relevance and the benefits an athlete can derive from using these techniques.
ugh!.......2004-05-28
I don't want a book of charts and stuff, I want a book that talks straight forward and tells of things to help, not showing me lines and dots.
Great Book.......2004-03-30
This book is a gold mine of information about the awesome power of visualization.
It's filled with practical information and theories, with lots of PROOFS to scientifically validate the theories contained within. Highly Recommended.

Book Description
The use of case studies is a well-established and effective learning method in business, law, and medical school, but its use is new to the field of sport psychology. As the practice of sport psychology requires analysis of problems and decision making on a daily basis, the cases presented afford students the opportunity to think critically about practical situations and generate solutions to issues and problems. Rotella's new text offers realistic situations to encourage the process of contemplation issues, posing and answering relevant questions, discussing alternatives, and applying strategies. The cases are easily incorporated into class discussion and encourage relating theory to practice. Questions at the end of each case can be used to spur and provide direction to discussion.
