If you are a Reading Coach - buy this book!.......2006-12-28
If you are a new or even an experienced coach - this is the book for you. I wish I had known about this book 4 years ago when I began as a coach. It is one of the best that I have read and believe me, I have read many. The numerous charts in the back are very helpful and ready to use just as they are. Within a day of reading this, my conferences with teachers changed completely into more effective conversations that helped me save time and get down to the heart of the matter - student achievement!

Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success: Building Blocks for a Better Life
ASIN: 1885693664 |
Product Description
Not only was John Wooden a great basketball coach, he was a master teacher. In fact, he was a great coach because he was a master teacher. What Wooden has learned from others in the classroom and perfected on the practice court are fundamental principles of effective teaching, which are conveyed in You Haven't Taught Until They Have Learned: John Wooden's Teaching Principles and Practices. Co-author Swen Nater, one of Wooden's former players at UCLA, provides insightful first-hand accounts on the many life lessons he learned from Wooden that he has applied to his life since becoming a teacher himself.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent study on Wooden's teaching methodology.......2007-02-11
If you've read a lot of Coach Wooden's books, you may be familiar with his wisdom, maxims and his wonderful pyramid of success; this book studies the methodology of his teaching and how he applied his wisdom to the successful transfer of knowledge and skills. If you're a teacher, buy this book!
Timeless Insights about Teaching and Learning.......2006-05-28
Ron Gallimore and Swen Nater combine their incredible knowledge about teaching and basketball to deliver a new and insightful look at the teaching practice of John Wooden. The book is a wonderful balance of personal stories from Nater and insights about teaching and learning from Gallimore that demonstrate just how incredibly wise, intentional, and gifted The Coach was and is. This book demonstrates the hard work, preparation, courage, and commitment to continuous learning that defines quality teaching. A must read for every teacher and coach.
Swen Nater's book: You WILL learn!.......2006-03-23
Swen Nater knows John Wooden - that much is clear. Clear too, is what a great teacher John Wooden was and, continues to be. This is a book any teacher can learn from. Sure it is great for coaches, but when a teacher is looking for guidance on how to handle varying student potential within their class, is it better to treat everyone the same - or to treat each individual differently, according to their personality, talent, ability, commitment etc. as Wooden did? Swen does a great job of interjecting his own life's experience into the priniciples Wooden taught. And he uses those of "Alcindor", Wicks, Walton, Allen and others to make the stories fit the lesson. This is textbook material, or should be required reading for aspiring or experienced teachers - 5 Stars plus!

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-09-28
An excellent book that I'm grateful to have read. The beginning chapters on Belichick's father and his son's early development into a 'football geek' are esp. interesting. It's easy to see where his work ethic comes from, and how the greatest mind in football came to be. Halberstam, may he rest in peace, skillfully created a fascinating portrait. Recommended.
Cheater.......2007-09-21
I read this book. Decent book about football, BUT...
In September 2007, it was found out that the Patriots had been illegally videotaping the sidelines of opponents. This is illegal in the NFL, and Patriots coach Belichick knows it. It basically is not just a violation of the rules of the NFL, but also is a violation of trust. It violates the NFL and the team and all fans and players. The NFL should take back the three rings the Patriots supposedly "earned" in their Super Bowls. This team is just a bunch of criminals in my view. They have deceived us all. I personally think that this massive breach of trust (using the word "Breach" brings to mind another deceiver, traitor Hanssen, who sold out the U.S. and the FBI). I am not saying Belichick is on that level, but what he did was a massive breach of trust. If the NFL in 5 or 10 years has lost out on its status as a "clean" game, and "America's game", we know who to thank: Belichick and his Patriots. I hope he is in prison by then. Hopefully a federal supermax. From now on, I hate this team. I hope they lose every game. Go Colts (and whoever is playing the Patriots) ! [by the way, Patriot fans: last year, you guys cheated and you still couldn't beat the Colts - a team that is far superior to you guys, morally. Think about that one !].
BTW, I know the argument that "everyone does it". But it is not correct, because "everyone" didn't videotape it the way the Pats did. They took cheating to a new level.
A waste of Halberstam's ability........2007-04-25
It is a measure of just how dull and unintersting a person Bill Belichick seems to be that not even David Halberstam can make him interesting. The trajectory of Belichick's life goes something like this: son of a coach, never wanted to be anything but a coach, surrounded himself with others who wanted to be coaches, became a coach. There just isn't much else there, and without additional insight into his personality, the book is basically an extended version of Belichick's resume. Halberstam's writing is, as always, very readable, but the editing of the book seemed a bit weak. There are several sections that are repeated almost verbatim in different parts of the book. Perhaps when the subject is as dull as Belichick, one has to repeat what few good anecdotes are available to try to make the book more interesting...
Biography of Bill Belichick.......2007-04-10
This biography of Bill Belichick is full of back-story about the three-time Super Bowl winner. Find out where he came from, and what made him a star.
Disappointment, but still a good read.......2007-02-11
I bought this book because I lived in Boston during the time of the by-now-fabled Patriots season when Brady subbed for Bledsoe during the 2001-02 season. I watched with some fair amount of panic, hopefulness, and wonderment as Brady wobbled a bit in his first few games and then hit a stride that he's rarely lost pace with since then. (Except their woefully sad end to the 2006-07 season, with their loss to the Colts because their "Wait until the end and win it" strategy finally fell short against the more consistently strong Colts.)
It was clear to me then that the Belichick-Brady-Kraft Family-Patriots thing was something pretty special for Belichick to keep Brady in even after Bledsoe was well enought to play again (taking quite a chance with the fanatical sports fan-dom that exists in New England), keep the team focused, and win the Super Bowl that year.
I knew it was a matter of some basic things like a really good coach, a really good team of players, and a really smart quarterback who didn't get mentally or emotionally rattled all that much. And an owner who let the coach be the coach (unlike the situation in Oakland, where I now live).
But I wanted to know what really went on behind-the-scenes and in Belichick's mind to make all this happen. How in the world did he do all that in 2001-02 and since then??
I don't disagree with the reviewers who have shared their reviews before me. Yes, the detail and history on Belichick's past, including his amazing father, are great. You get some sense of who Belichicck, the man behind the work, is--about as much as you would get with a man who's as quiet, humble, and private as he is about his internal life and family. You'll get some sense of Belichicck's work and training in the context of the college and NFL worlds. You'll learn about the in-depth, mind-reading like talent of a man who can easily read the defense but without ever losing sight of the offense.
But you won't get any sense of the leadership skills in the man. Or how he worked with Brady and the rest of the team to keep them focused in 2001-02. Or how, through a long and grueling season, he keeps everyone focused enough to perform at such high levels of play. And that's what I'm really interested in, as my work involves organizational development, training, and group dynamics. The book is also pathetically short on details of the seasons after 2001-02.
Ultimately, the book is strong on the past and pre-Patriots days of Belichick (although still not sufficient in describing the dysfunctional but functional relationship between Belichick and Parcells; but, then, who could ever do that?!). The weakness and lasting detraction is the omission of true insight and stories into Belichick the man/coach and sketchy descriptions of post-season play by the Patriots. It's like the Cliff's Notes version. I hope one day someone else will be able to more fully capture the mind, heart, and commitment of Coach Belichick.

Book Description
The Double-Goal Coach is filled with powerful coaching tools based on Jim Thompson's Positive Coaching Alliance. These strategies reflect the "best-practices" of elite coaches and the latest research in sports psychology.Hundreds of workshops have shaped these tools for maximum effectiveness and ease of use. The lessons and activities can be used in the very next practice to make sports fun and to get the best from players.
The Double-Goal Coach provides the framework for coaches and parents to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth -- allowing young athletes to enjoy sports while learning valuable life lessons.
Customer Reviews:
Should be on every youth coach's reading list!.......2006-12-08
The premise of the book is that winning is not a bad thing. It's not necessarily the only thing however. Thompson uses real life examples from youth through professional, where focusing on the positive, correcting the negative, and focus on improving have helped teams be successful.
It is our job as youth coaches to make sure we are building solid citizens, teaching them life lessons through sports, and helping them become the best athlete they can be. Winning happens to be a great side effect of this approach!
The book is great for coaches and parents alike!
Another hit by Thompson.......2003-09-26
This book covers some of the same topics as Thompson's classic, Positive Coaching. However, it has some new ideas in it, and also has some lessons learned since Positive Coaching was written. It also has a handbook-type approach - it gives you example talks, helps you plan a practice and also shows you ways to help you acquire Positive Coaching skills. I have found all of Jim Thompson's books enjoyable and enlightening.
The Double Goal Coach - Winning With Character.......2003-08-21
Discussions of character in sports hinge on two sometimes competing beliefs. One holds that sports build character, the other that sports reveal it.
The case can be made that both ideas are valid. Character is regularly revealed in the way that players, coaches, parents and leaders of youth sports organizations (YSOs) conduct themselves on and off the field.
The "Sports Builds Character" belief is a trickier proposition. Who is to question that sports provides a wonderful setting for the development of poise, confidence, determination, resilience, self-sacrifice, courage? The list goes on, and it is not a coincidence that a strong involvement in sports was the common feature of those who tried to take back the plane on 9/11. Yet every Positive Life Skill associated with sports has a counterpart that can be learned equally well. And often more easily. If you can learn fair play and sportsmanship, you can also learn to cheat. If you can learn about commitment, you can also learn to quit on yourself and your teammates. Accountability and accepting responsibility: making excuses. Again, the list goes on.
Many of the adults involved in sports simply assume, based on their own experience, that the positive side of these character traits will emerge. In fact, without a concerted effort to use sports to teach positive Life Lessons, you might as well be flipping a coin.
Attention to these issues is a major focus of "The Double Goal Coach", the latest book by Jim Thompson. The author is founder of the Positive Coaching Alliance ..., an organization based at Stanford University which seeks "to transform the culture of youth sports so that sports can transform youth."
Like many books on the state of youth sports, Thompson chronicles the excesses. What sets the book apart are solutions to these problems based on research in the fields of education and sports psychology as well as lessons in organizational culture drawn from the business world. Theory then becomes practice through the presentation of many practical tools for establishing and maintaining a positive culture for youth sports. Coaches, parents and the leaders of YSO's will find things here that can be put to immediate use.
What is a Double Goal Coach? He or she is a coach who wants to win. Thompson makes clear that the Positive Coaching message is not anti-competitive or about "happy talk". This is not an invitation to go out and kick a ball around with Barney. Indeed, at a time when real competitions at Field Day have been reduced to (at most) a 50 yard dash, Thompson sees the competitive sports experience as an increasingly important, and rare, opportunity for the development of positive character traits - the second, and more important, goal of the Double Goal Coach. Because it's the character traits that will endure long after the ball's gone into the closet.
There are three elements to Double Goal Coaching. The first seeks to redefine winning, changing the definition from one based only on results (the "win at all costs" model, or waac - which so often becomes wacko!) to a "mastery approach" based on effort, learning, and a positive view of the value of mistakes. The essential difference in the approaches has to do with control. Results are so much in the control of others; with a mastery approach, control belongs to the athlete. What's interesting, though, is the research that shows that a mastery approach actually produces better performance than one where the focus is primarily on the scoreboard.
Next comes the concept of Honoring the Game. This is largely a proactive view of sportsmanship issues, based on what you do rather than what you don't do. Honoring the game involves developing and demonstrating respect for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and one's Self (ROOTS).
The third element of the Double Goal model involves "Filling the Emotional Tank", motivation through encouragement and positive reinforcement. Again, the book provides a number of useful tools for coaches.
There is also a section of the book for Sports Parents. Thompson promotes the notion of the "Second Goal Parent", whose primary task is to be unconditionally supportive of their child, whose focus is on those Life Lessons and positive character traits, who recognize that their child's participation in sports belongs to the child, and who leave coaching to the coaches.
Thompson advocates a "systems approach" to developing positive cultures for youth sports, and his organization provides an integrated set of workshops for coaches, parents and leaders of YSOs. Where that's not in place, "The Double Goal Coach" will give the individual coach many ways create a more enjoyable environment for his or her team, and one where the players are much more likely to reach their potential as athletes. That a Double Goal approach will also be much more enjoyable and rewarding for the coach is no insignificant bonus.

10 Traits all teachers should consider before teaching.......2004-04-05
When I first chose to read this book, I wasn't sure how much of it would pertain to mentoring. My concern increased when I received the book and it listed only one chapter dealing, officically, with mentoring. My concerns quickly vanished as I began to read. This book is an excellent book for new teachers to read or for mentors to share with them. It focuses on all aspects of teaching and stresses the importance of the well rounded teacher and their ability to be a real person. It states that the intellectual abilities are just one component of an effective teacher and encourages teachers to be respectful, empathetic, creative, and to have a sense of humor. There are also suggestions on how to encourage and empower experienced teachers. This book comes with graphic organizers that can be used to create presentations for in services or new teacher orientations and the author has granted permission for such usage. Ten Traits of Highly Effective Teachers makes a great addition to my professional library.
Has anyone read this book?.......2004-01-14
The two reviews (so far) for this book were obviously written by the interns at the publishing house or publicist's office.
Tells you everything you need to know.
Keep on moving, folks. Nothing to see here.
What makes an Effective Teacher?.......2003-04-09
10 Traits of Highly Effective Teachers by Elaine K. McEwan is well put together book, with lots of graphic organizers to clearly illustrate the ten traits. It concisely lists and explains the traits that make administrators and teachers effective. This book provides tools for teachers, administrators, and mentors to help others and themselves become more effective.
Principals and administrators will find ideas to help them improve instruction, become more able mentors, and motivate effective teachers. Teachers will find information and inspiration to define personal definitions of effective teaching. The book will give every teacher a renewed sense of mission and vision of what teaching can be.
McEwan's book divides the traits into three categories: personal traits, teaching traits, and knowledge traits. She introduces you to each trait through real-life examples, personal vignettes, and reflections of students, parents and educators. She provides many lists, questions, and exercises to empower teachers and nurture the ten traits.
EXCITING ANSWERS TO WHAT MAKES EFFECTIVE TEACHERS.......2001-12-02
10 TRAITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHERS by Elaine K. McEwan is bound to be a best seller. The American public is tired of pie-in-the-sky theory; they want no-nonsense answers about what makes administrators and teachers effective so that these traits can be emulated and transferred to the next generation of educators.
Ms. McEwan admits in the book that she likes lists; and the busy reader profits from her lists because they contain substance. Her lists are not full of superfluous rhetoric but are nuggets of digestible truth.
What traits should quality teachers seek to develop? McEwan lays them out concisely. What should principals do to encourage classroom teachers? McEwan tells the inquiring reader. What questions should a principal and/or a committee ask when hiring prospective teachers? McEwan spells them out through helpful snippets of real-world scenarios. How can a teacher develop his own teaching style? McEwan gives fascinating examples. How can a teacher manage instructional time to the maximum? McEwan illustrates actual experiences from her own life as an experienced educator.
McEwan's book is not wordy, and it can be consumed in small bites which is a must for over-committed educators. However, her content and style make the reader want to keep reading. Having been a classroom teacher for over 29 years, I found myself saying "Amen" again and again; but I also found myself learning new information to which I had never been exposed.
Elaine McEwan is indeed a teacher of teachers, a leader among administrators; and her book should serve as a quality textbook for those who want to follow one of the highest callings in life.
