Book Description
This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel’s sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel’s owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures.
The icy-hearted Mrs. Tifton is not as pleased with the Penderwicks as Jeffrey is, though, and warns the new friends to stay out of trouble. Which, of course, they will—won’t they? One thing’s for sure: it will be a summer the Penderwicks will never forget.
Deliciously nostalgic and quaintly witty, this is a story as breezy and carefree as a summer day.
Customer Reviews:
this is a fun book........2007-08-15
This book is about a family of four sisters who stay at a cottage in Massachusetts for a few weeks during the summer. The sisters make a new friend and have to find a way to save him from being sent to a military boarding school that he doesn't want to go to.
My favorite part of the book was when Batty got rescued by her sister and Jeffrey from the bull because I didn't know what was going to happen. When Sky met Jeffery they argued but then they became friends and that was kind of funny. And I liked that Jane was writing an adventure book and I was happy for her when she finished writing it. I also liked the end of the book because everyone was happy in the end.
The worst part was when the oldest sister Rosalind fell and bumped her head on a rock when she saw the boy she liked kissing another girl. I felt bad for her and I thought she was going to end up with amnesia or something but she didn't though.
I would recommend this book to other kids because it was a fun summer book. It is about adventures, friendship, secrets and a little romance (but not much). This book is great for older and younger kids.
I would rate this book with 5 stars because I really liked it.
Delightful summer read.......2007-08-08
As a writer who wrote this story with the best intentions of providing a wonderful new voice for children's literature, Jeanne Birdsall has succeeded! The Penderwicks Summer Tale is a most delightful summer read. Take the time to become friends with this terrific family. This summer tale provides many escapades for the family of three girls on vacation and the boy they meet who lives upstairs in the mansion . Fantasy and real life adventures are shared and valuable lessons are learned for these summer comrades.
The Penderwicks.......2007-07-28
My daughter is the one who picked up this book, and for two summers now it has sat unread. Very unusual as my older kids are avid readers, and complete most books in a day or two. This made me extremely curious about what was wrong, as my daughter is the ideal reader of this book: a girl age 8 - 14.
Knowing The Penderwicks is a story of four sisters, and mostly a book meant for young girls, I picked up the book and read it myself. What I found was a nicely written book, though Jeanne Birdsall as a first time writer does quite a few things more experienced writers could never get away with.
Older readers I suspect wouldn't have a problem with this, and that's part of the problem with this book. It seems to be a book intended for young readers, but written to earn points with much, much older readers. I'd suspect that's why it won the National Book award. How could a book with character names like Rosalind and Cagney, that reminesces about places like Gettysburg, cottage vacations of yester year, and is intended for young reades not win an award -- it has all the right ingredients.
The problem is the recipe -- older readers who praise this book never seem to notice the recipe is a tad off. The dialog is clearly that of an adult trying to talk like a child. As a father with children of all ages at home, I know of no children that talk as these children do.
Overall, this is a fairly good book, but it's not a perfect book. It's a simple book with a simple storyline. The message is good, even if the pacing and plotting are off at times.
You won't want to put down this relaxing summer tale!.......2007-07-20
At first glance you probably will not see the plain cover of this book.
But with a good reader's further investigation, you will stumble across this refreshing tale. The Penderwicks is the kind of book that goes best with fresh air, and a glass of Iced Tea. A warm summer breeze, is this books best friend.
The book is about 4 sisters who find themselves on the beautiful estate of Arundel for their summer. While exploring the great gardens, of this lush getaway, the girls meet Jeffrey. Jeffrey is a wonderful boy, who's mother, (the grouchy owner, Mrs. Tifton)is far far, from wonderful! The girls, quickly find themselves and Jeffrey are inseperable, the only problem is that Mrs. Tifton isn't as fond of the Penderwicks as him.
The book has everything. Comedy, action, and a slight tweek of romance.
You would really be missing out, if you ignored this superb story.
Enjoyable Summer Read.......2007-07-10
Although it started out slowly for me, I found myself engaged in the story after a chapter or two. This was well-written and brought back vivid memories of my childhood adventures and also of books I loved reading as a child. Sweet relationships written in a way that I could just picture the sisters and the scenes. Great plot. As a teacher, I'd recommend this to any reader or as a delightful read-aloud story to share.
Book Description
In a summer that refuses to end, in the deceiving warmth of earliest October, civil war has come to Green Town, Illinois. It is the age-old conflict: the young against the elderly, for control of the clock that ticks their lives ever forward. The first cap-pistol shot heard 'round the town is dead accurate, felling an old man in his tracks, compelling town elder and school board despot Mr. Calvin C. Quartermain to marshal his graying forces and declare total war on the assassin, thirteen-year-old Douglas Spaulding, and his downy-cheeked cohorts. Doug and his cronies, however, are most worthy adversaries who should not be underestimated, as they plan and execute daring campaigns—matching old Quartermain's experience and cunning with their youthful enthusiasm and devil-may-care determination to hold on forever to childhood's summer. Yet time must ultimately be the victor, with valuable revelations for those on both sides of the conflict. And life waits in ambush to assail Doug Spaulding with its powerful mysteries—the irresistible ascent of manhood, the sweet surrender to a first kiss . . .
One of the most acclaimed and beloved of American storytellers, Ray Bradbury has come home, revisiting the verdant landscape of one of his most adored works, Dandelion Wine. More than fifty years in the making, the long-awaited sequel, Farewell Summer, is a treasure—beautiful, poignant, wistful, hilarious, sad, evocative, profound, and unforgettable . . . and proof positive that the flame of wonder still burns brightly within the irrepressible imagination of the incomparable Bradbury.
Customer Reviews:
I almost can't put it in words........2007-10-08
I read this book in one sitting, just over a month ago, and I'm still finding it hard to put it in words just how powerful it was for me. I had just read Dandelion Wine and moved straight on into Farewell Summer. The cumulative effect was nothing less than awe-inspireing, and I really think it's how you should go about reading the two works, almost as one. Dandelion Wine is without a doubt a masterpiece, and is told as a novel made up of short stories. Farewell Summer is a more concise story, and more of a straight forward novel. While they both deal with the topics of youth and mortality, they each come from a slightly different perspective. Dandelion Wine was written fifty years ago in Bradbury's youth, while Farewell Summer comes to us in his later years. In the end they act as bookends on a topic that is dear, and dreadful to all of us, and perfectly told in Bradbury's magical, poetic style. Read them, back to back, at the end of August, as summer slowly begins to fade. Think about your childhood, and ponder your old age. If you aren't moved, then check your pulse. If it's still there, pay very close attention to it. It's what it's all about.
Sequels aren't always Equals.......2007-06-25
Farewell Summer is a good story, but pales in comparison to Dandelion Wine. While recognizable as atypical Bradbury, it lacks the wallop I was hoping to get from his other books. I can't say much more than that without spoiling the story for you.
It is a fast read though. I finished it in one sitting between lunch and dinner. It's not a waste of time, just not Ray's best work. Read Dandelion Wine first.
Douglas Who?.......2007-06-23
Dandelion Wine has been in my personal top 3 ever since I first read it for a sophomore lit course in 1982. Although the afterword of Farewell to Summer asserts that both novels were born of one draft, the original characters are recognizable only in brief flickers. Douglas Spaulding, in particular, in a matter of supposed mere days or weeks between the end of the first novel and the beginning of the next, has inexplicably morphed from the pensive, sensitive everyboy into the wannabe leader of a small-town terrorist cell. Yes, Bradbury remains ever the wordsmith, but this was just a bummer - too dark and too bizarre in comparison to the original. I almost wish I hadn't read it at all.
Interesting novel, worthy sequel to Dandelion Wine.......2007-03-31
Although not as good as Dandelion Wine, Farewell Summer is still a magical novel, though much darker. Some of the chapters here feel like filler (and I will admit, there was some filler in Dandelion Wine) and the book feels too short. However, it is a worthy extension to a great book, and some of the themes in this book are pulled off quite well. Bradbury's superb writing skills excel this book to a 4-star rating.
A Most Fitting Sequel to "Dandelion Wine".......2006-12-22
Now in his mid 80s, at the close of a long, and most productive, career in American letters, Ray Bradbury has finally offered a tantalizing, moving sequel to his great novel on youth, "Dandelion Wine", which is once more a return visit to the fictitious town of Green Town, Illinois (Actually Bradbury's boyhood home of Waukegan, Illinois), meeting up once more with Douglas Spaulding, his brother Tom, and their friends, two years after the events chronicled in Bradbury's earlier literary triumph. Much to my surprise, Bradbury doesn't disappoint, offering a most fitting sequel to "Dandelion Wine", with the same graceful, lyrical prose that defined that earlier novel - and I might add, so much of his great work from the 1950s - but with a somewhat more somber, darker atmosphere, as the boys finally confront both the passage of time and their own impending adulthood. Moreover, Bradbury still demonstrates that he is still both a most persuasive spinner of tales and an elegant observer of the human condition, capturing well the nuanced, elaborate personal relationships between the young and old, and between boys and girls.
Spaulding is now the leader of a "Grand Army of the Republic", in which he and his friends undertake several dastardly mischevious raids against the town's senior citizens, most notably the dictator of the local school board, Calvin C. Quatermain. Time and again, young Doug Spaulding leads his friends in brilliantly conceived raids in the vain hope of trying to stop the passage of time, thinking that they could live forever as twelve year old boys. And then suddenly, unexpectedly, Doug has a moment of epiphany which leads to an unexpected truce, and then, a brief friendship with Quatermain, an 81 year-old bachelor, who sees in young Doug, a brief reflection of his own youthful self many, many years ago. And Doug is also unexpectedly soon caught up in the mystique and magic of girls, getting his own first kiss from one in a rather unique, most surprising, manner.
Does "Farewell Summer" rank alongside Bradbury's best works of fiction, like, for example, "Something Wicked This Way Comes", "The Illustrated Man", or "The Martian Chronicles"? I suppose a thoughtful, extremely erudite, critic of Bradbury's work might be inclined to say "No", but I would hope that such a critic would agree that Bradbury hasn't lost his superb skills in both storytelling and in writing elegant, lyrical prose. Regardless, Bradbury's latest, short novel, remains a most fitting sequel to "Dandelion Wine", and perhaps, a most fitting conclusion to a splendid literary career which has crossed genres from pulp science fiction to mainstream literature, earning Bradbury ample recognition and praise as one of our finest contemporary writers of fiction.

Dramatic Beach Read.......2007-06-18
Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott is about three girls and one dramatic summer that will change their lives forever. Jamie, Ella, and Beth Tuttle are cousins who have spent every summer at Pebble Beach since they were children. Jamie found a boyfriend, last summer, but now she feels like he is holding something back. Ella has found a boyfriend for the summer, which would be great if he wan't involved with her sister. Beth has always loved George as a friend, but now she starts to realize how cute he looks.
Summer Boys is a realistic teen dramam that sucks you in from the very first page. The alternating third-person chapters let you see every event in gripping detail. Hailey Abbott does an amazing job showing each girl's story on the same summer timeline, and making events intertwine within each other's stories stories. This book is great for anyone looking for an engaging beach read, while waiting for their summer romance to begin.

Awesome Book.......2007-05-14
I bought this book at first beacause I wanted to buy books that had to deal with summer since summer will soon be here. I started reading it and I got hooked to it right away. The book is about three girls and their love lives during summer vacation. It was such a good book and I loved the way she described situations. It was really cute and by far one of the best books I have read.
FAB-U-LOUS!!!!.......2007-04-06
This is a GREAT book! It's about 3 cousins that all have love problems. Beth starts to find out that she likes her best friend George more then a friend. Jamie is head over heals for her boyfriend Ethan who she meet last summer but he seems to be pushing her away. Ella meets a boy named Peter who likes her sister Kelsi more then Ella who is feeling unsure of herself now. Each story for every girl ends in a well writen. Something about this book..............2007-01-04
I agree with the reviewer below me. She mentioned that it was different than the others and i totally agree.
I let my friend borrow it before i read it and before she gave it to me she said that it just wasnt the same and there was not much action going on as much as the summer ones.
This book was also too short, it seemed as though she was rushing into it
let's hope she can gain back her composure for her next book: last summer
After Summer.......2006-12-21
I've loved the Summer Boys novels since I started reading them, but this one was a little more dissappointing to me compared to the others. Don't get me wrong, I loved it; yet, something about After Summer is different from the others. It could possibly be that the book doesn't take place at Pebble Beach, but I think it was mostly how some, espcially one in particular, of the relationships between the girls and their significant others panned out. I hope all is resolved in her next and final book, and that it feels less like I'm on roller coaster of ups and downs in the Tuttle girls' lives. I do agree with others who have said this book is too short. Hell, I like to take my time while reading a book and I finished this one in about 8 hours.
It's definatley worth reading, but, as I stated before, I hope everything is smoothed over in the next installment of the series. Honestly, who doesn't enjoy a happy ending?
it was good but.........2006-10-21
IT WAS TOO SHORT!! it should have continued longer..it stops after thanksgiving, is there going to be a book called BEFORE THE LAST SUMMER? but besides the lack of pages it was a decent book.
Abbott has done it again.......2006-10-09
After Summer was a great book, and again kept me reading finished it pretty quick well it is the shortest i think. but it was very good glad to see jeremy back with ella, and i was hoping to hear more about jamie but me favorite to hear about is ella and beth. kelsi's story was good in this i hope to see her with taryn's brother bennett. i am looking forward to reading the next summer boys novel Last Summer, i really hope it's not the last one. it'd b awesome if these books were a movie!
After Summer.......2006-10-04
I thought the novel After Summer was a great book. I rate this book 5 stars because it kept me reading each night and i thought the book was a great girl book. The book had a lot of excitement in it and kept me reading each night. The characters in this novel were very good and i could relate to them.

Not My Cuupa Tea.......2007-09-15
This book was boring!!! Well, thats, my humble, ordinary opinion. Three stories, three different authors, yet exactly the same - DULL. I managed to complete the first story, skipping a lot of the pages to do so. I tried the second and third stories as I realised they were written by different authors. Couldn't finish either of them. I tried hard to like and enjoy but couldn't. I like story lines with a bit of fun and keep the "hot and steamy stuff" out of it. Hot and steamy needs to be written quickly, fast paced and keep it short, not pages and pages. Maybe I'm "square" but I just don't like these types.
Funny & Sexy--just the thing for Summer!.......2006-11-28
**This anthology features three excellent storytellers! You won't want to miss it, trust me.
The first story is "Luscious" by Lori Foster. Her stories always have a deep sense of family that I just adore. In addition, her writing tends to have a message about right and wrong and standing up for the little guy. I just love that! This story is no exception. Things start off tense from the get go when Lucius Ryder, SWAT hunk, is stuck in a heart-stopping hostage situation. And you'll let out a great big, "ahhhh" when it's all said and done, and Lucius manages to rescue a hero of a dog.
Unfortunately, he hasn't a clue what to do with the poor little thing. His first thought is to take him to his neighbor, Marci Churchill. She's very good with animals. In fact, one would say she can even connect with them. Lucius isn't really sure about all that, but one thing he is certain of is Marci's twin, Bethany. He wants her. Bad. Now. He's been a good boy and managed to tamp down his wild urges, but now, with Bethany so close, Lucius isn't so inclined to control himself any longer. Unfortunately--for Lucius--Bethany doesn't want anything to do with men anymore. Seems, it's up to Lucius to change her mind on that score. And the way he goes about doing it is just downright yummy!
The second story, "Its About Time" by Erin McCarthy, is true Erin McCarthy style. Her stories always make me laugh and yet they are oh-so steamy too! I haven't read a story by her that I didn't love. This story begins as the heroine, Trish Jones, is stood up. She's feeling just the slightest bit of self-pity. Then, she spots a sexy, brooding man at the other end of the bar wallowing in his own fair share of grief. While Trish tries telling herself that Caleb is not really right for her, her body isn't all that keen on listening. She wants Caleb Vancouver. Vigorously, passionately, wildly wants Caleb Vancouver. Caleb hasn't had sex in two years and he is way the heck past ready! Trish isn't going to know what hit her once he gets his big, hard hands on her delectable curves. And he plans to leave her breathless and begging. She plans to let him...these two sure do heat up the pages!
The last story in this anthology is Amy Garvey's "Wish You Were Here". I've never read this author before, but wow, I really enjoyed her story. I thought Garvey closed this anthology with a very charming and tender romance. It was the perfect happily-ever-after, in my opinion. I can't wait to check out what else she has on the shelves! Photographer, Mackenzie Pruitt, has just inherited her Aunt's house. The little dilapidated shed out back is going to be McKenzie's new studio. She's excited to begin this new chapter in her life, but still the `studio' needs a lot of work. A LOT of work. McKenzie hires contractor, Leo Dawson, to make the little shack into the studio of her dreams. When she first sees Leo, she finds herself nearly drooling. Good lord, the man was gorgeous! Big and rough and just gorgeous! Her first thought--okay, maybe not her first thought--is to photograph him. He wholeheartedly nixes the idea, saying that if she even tries to snap a single picture of him he's out of there. McKenzie is disappointed, but agrees, what choice does she have? But what she doesn't know is that Leo has a secret lay buried in his past, one that he doesn't have any intention of revealing. But as mutual attraction turns to something much deeper, Leo has to choose. Does he risk everything and tell McKenzie his secret, or does he walk away and let her go...? You'll have to read the book if you want to find out!
A Perfect Summer Treat!!!.......2006-06-10
"Bad Boys of Summer" is the perfect summer read! Yummy hero's, feisty heroines and hot romance all found under one cover. What more could you ask for?
Lori Fosters "Luscious" Bethany Churchill has quit her job, her lousy boyfriend and has returned to her twin sister Marci's in order to figure out exactly what she's going to do next. She's not prepared when Lucius Ryder a member of the SWAT team and her sister's landlord knocks on the door looking for help with his newly adopted dog Hero. The ladies call him "Luscious" for a reason and Bethany is having a hard time remembering why she has no faith in men when Lucius sets her on fire with a kiss. Will Lucius be able to prove that Bethany is the twin he wants and no other will do?
Erin McCarthy "It's About Time" Trish Jones has just been stood up...again. Why does this keep happening to her? Needing a break she goes to her favorite pub. She has no idea that this trip isn't going to end like they normally do...no, this time she is going to meet Caleb Vancouver and this guy is just what she's looking for but will she be smart enough to keep him or will she let him ride off on his Harley?
Amy Garvey "Wish You Were Here" Mackenzie is a photographer who is set on having a beautiful old building renovated and turned into her new studio. When yummy carpenter Leo Dawson shows up she decides she'd rather have him work on her which is really weird because he is not what she normally looks for in a man. But, what she thinks she wants is not going to be what she gets.
This was a steamy, fast-paced read with wonderful contributions from each of these highly talented authors. If you're looking for titles to add to your "must read" summer list...make sure this one's at the top!
As usual, This Antho Rocks!.......2006-06-09
Lucious By Lori Foster
Sexy Lawman Lucius Ryder is attracted to his neighbor sister. He thinks that ignoring the object of his attraction is the way to go. But, Surprise! Fate interferes and soon sparks are flying between Bethany and Lucius. Lori's trademark of a sexy fun romance is accomplished once again in this story.
Its about time By Erin McCarthy
Trish Jones has been stood up again. Determined to have a pity me party, she goes to her favorite bar and meets Caleb Vancouver. He is halfway drunk, not her type, or so she though until she decides to "help" him and takes him to her place. The chemistry between them can't be denied and soon things start to heat up. Erin's sexy romance trademark shines again in this story.
Wish you were here By Amy Garvey
Mackenzie Pruitt is determined to restore the house she inherited from her aunt, for that she need a carpenter! Leo Dawson is just what she needs and more. He is one hot package of sexy male/carpenter. Sparks fly when they are in the same room. This is a sexy, tender story that will have you sighing. My first read for Amy Garvey and will not be the last.
In general this is a steamy romance by great authors that once again prove that love can be found anywhere, even with a bad boy!
A summer scorcher!.......2006-06-08
LUSCIOUS by Lori Foster. When Bethany Churchill moves in with her twin sister, Marci, the last thing she expects to find is a man who is interested in her. Not her gorgeous, self-assured, confident sister, but her. SWAT officer/landlord Lucius Ryder, also known as "Luscious" to the all-women tenants in his apartment building, wants Marci for the magic she can work with his newly acquired, badly abused dog. Marci has the gift of "reading" dogs, understanding what is troubling them and what makes them happy. Lucius wants Bethany strictly for himself and once he sets out to seduce her and prove to her how he feels, she is more confused than ever. Once you throw in the eclectic personalities of the women in the apartment building, Bethany's lack of self-esteem, Lucius's abundance of self-confidence and the dangers of his job, you have a well-rounded story with all of the feel-good qualities that Lori Foster is known for.***** IT'S ABOUT TIME by Erin McCarthy. Prosecuting Attorney Trish Jones has been stood up. Again. After waiting for an hour for her date, she makes her way to Ryan's Pub. There she runs into Caleb Vancouver who, with empty beer bottles covering the bar in front of him, appears to be successfully drowning his sorrows. These two are steam-worthy from the word go and begin a red-hot relationship almost immediately, but Leo is hiding a secret and there's no way they can have a future together until he is willing to share his past with Mackenzie. Each summer, Andrei Makine's narrator and his sister leave the Soviet Union for the mythical land of France-Atlantis. That this country is a beautiful confabulation, a consolation existing only in his maternal grandmother's mind, makes it no less real. Though Charlotte Lemonnier lives in a town on the edge of the steppe, each night she journeys to a long-ago Paris, telling tales that the children then translate with their more Russian minds: "The president of the Republic was bound to have something Stalinesque about him in the portrait sketched by our imagination. Neuilly was peopled with kolkhozniks. And the slow emergence of Paris from the waters evoked a very Russian emotion--that of fleeting relief after one more historic cataclysm ..."
Makine's first novel is a singing tribute to the alchemy of inspiration, but it is no less familiar with the sorrows of reality. And it is only as he gets older that the narrator begins to piece together his grandmother's far more tragic past--her experiences in the Great War, the October Revolution, and after. Dreams of My Russian Summers is a love letter to an extraordinary woman (it's hard not to see the book as autobiographical) as well as to language and literature, which the boy turns to in avoidance of history's manipulations. It has all the marks of an instant classic.
Book Description
Hailed as extraordinary from coast to coast and winner of both the Prix Goncourt and the Prix Medicis, France's top literary prizes, the national bestseller Dreams of My Russian Summers traces a sentimental journey that embraces many of the dramatic events in Russia during the twentieth century. Here is a poignant story of a Soviet boy's ascent into manhood in the 1960s and 1970s, and his extraordinary affection for his mysterious grandmother who seems to have been there for all the pivotal historical events. This epic tale is full of tenderness and passion, pain and heartbreak; mesmerizing, in every way.

Depth of memory and connection.......2007-04-01
This novel is unque in placing me into the transparent and transcental dimension of memory. It let me feel the power of reflectoin and voices from the distant past or other worlds. This novel doesn't have to be compared to Proust's masterpiece. The stream of narration and the language (I am reading an English translation) is almost mesmerizing, sending the reader off this world. I would place this as one of the best literary work.
A beautiful reflection on what it meant to be Russian and French in the 20 th centruy.......2006-05-28
Andrei Makine's book, Dreams of My Russian Summer's, is a very special book. Even though the author wrote the book in French, and I read it in translation (English), the writing is fantastic. It takes a little getting used to it, it's very "flowery", just to give you fair warning, but once you get used to it, you'll appreciate it. And despite all the attention given to the language, quite a bit actually happens, the dialogue doesn't stand still. It's a moving and interesting story.
The story is told in retrospect in the first person. It's a memory. We are told that he has a grandmother who has both French and Russian backgrounds, born and raised in France and married a Russian and lived out the rest of her life there, making her way through world wars and quirky Russian society. What we're not told immediately is why the narrator is fixated on his grandmother's dual nationality, which is what the novel is about.
Take time to enjoy the language and to fully appreciate the details of the story. I immediately reread the first 20 pages upon finishing, just to make sure I didn't miss anything important. This 1995 book will definitely be read and reread for a long time.
Lyrical memories of idyllic summers past.......2004-04-04
Andrei Makine, born in Siberia in 1957, has written an prose ode to his French grandmother, a memorable account of life in Communist Russia as lived by the woman who gave him joy, comfort, and permission to dream of other worlds.
Each summer, Andrei and his sister visited this grandmother at the edge of Russia's vast steppes, and in the evening she told them stories of her past. Trapped in Russia after the revolution, she married a Russian and became a hardworking Soviet wife and mother - but she never lost the Frenchness of her utmost being. Slowly, over the years, she reveals harsh truths to young Andrei - but always with a lyrical and dreamlike quality that makes reading this book feel as though you're inhaling pure, gauzy poetry.
speak, memory.......2003-12-22
A lovely, lyrical "autobiographical novel". Makine, born Russian, has lived in France since 1987. This novel covers his extraordinary relationship with his grandmother, who sets his life in motion by re-telling stories of her French past. This is a wonderful book, filled with spare, powerful writing. One of the loveliest books I've read in a long time.
Beautiful.......2003-08-21
A work of art, Makine's use of language is stunning. Not a quick read, I frequently had to stop and ponder many profound passages. Literature as an art form is not dead.

Acceleration.......2007-05-10
Acceleration was written by Graham McNamee it is a mystery book. It is about a few boys that have a summer job working in the lost and found of a subway. They find many interesting things while working there. The most exotic thing they found was a little black book that was written by a anonymous man who is a serial killer and writes a dairy of dark and dirty secrets about crazy ideas. The boys are very scared and dont know what to do about it.I really liked this book! It kept me on my toes wondering what was going to happen next.I would recomend this book to older teenagers because it can be confusing to follow.
reluctant reader teacher.......2007-03-08
As a high school teacher of a class full of reading haters, I highly recommend this book. My students were sad when it was over, they couldn't wait to get to class to read this suspenseful thriller.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-03-03
Duncan is having a very boring summer, working at his mind-numbing job at the Toronto Transit Authority's lost and found. He sorts through old junk no one wants anymore and boxes up all of the "expired" items to be donated.
One very ordinary day he was looking for a book to read when he comes across a brown leather bound journal. He begins reading it and soon figures out that the person who is writing this is seriously deranged! It's like this journal is the book of weird and twisted science experiments this person has been conducting. There are even women in the book that he follows that he plans on killing.
Duncan, along with his two best friends, take it upon themselves to find out who this freak is!
I really liked this book. The story is very addictive; I couldn't put it down!

Acceleration book review
Have you ever been inside the head of a serial killer? The first person perspective you get of "Roach", the would-be serial killer, through his misplaced diary, makes you want to jump into the book and protect his targets. In this single-book thriller, the protagonist, Duncan, is a teenager growing up in the projects or, the "Jungle", of Toronto. With his longtime friends, Vinnie, the slacker know-it-all who happens to have a deformed hand, and Wayne, the small time criminal who works at dairy barn, Duncan has settled in for an average summer of minimum wage and messing around. He knows that's not all he is in for when he discovers a diary in the Toronto transit lost and found where he works. This diary is not just the fretting of some teenage girl, it's the cold, deadly calculations and plans of an accomplished arsonist who is also stalking 3 complete strangers. After attempting to turn the diary into the cops, who seem to him to be blind to the threat Duncan decides to enlist his childhood friends to track down the psycho before he hurts anyone, using the insight into Roach's twisted mind that he gains from the diary, he tracks him down and trys and turn the tables on the evil diarist.
The information about psychopaths in this well-researched book seems credible. Graham McNamee's extensive knowledge of his subject helped create believable characters. While I was reading this book I was aware of being creeped and wanting not to believe that there are actually people who love the feeling of power they get from killing animals, committing arson or stalking human beings. If you liked The Body of Christopher Creed, Acceleration might be a good choice. They are both dark, angled towards sending shivers down your spine. What makes Acceleration able to hold your interest, even while being disturbing, is that the characters are average people you can relate to. Duncan forgets to call his parents, eats fast food, wonders what is in it and sleeps till 11 at least. But the problem that Duncan, Wayne and Vinnie face; tracking down one deformed mind in a city of a few million people, is not something I ever expect or want to face. I think it was a great choice to use the first person because you feel the mounting pressure to do something and understand Duncan's panic as he thinks time is running out. In the book Duncan would ride the subway next to the first target of "Roach", and then go swimming or go to Dairy Queen. The contrast in the pacing and subject matter contributed to the everyday/surreal theme of the book. The author, Graham McNamee, also used a lot of flashbacks in this book. The flashbacks brought unexpected elements to the story and made the plot a lot more interesting. The most effective of which was a reoccurring one about the past summer when he was the last to see a girl before she drowned. In Duncan's words "I was the one who didn't save her." I think that if you like thrillers or mysteries at all, you should read this book. It is one of the best books about an average teenager who becomes a hero I have ever read best of all it comes without a corny moral.

AMAZING.......2007-06-09
one of the best novels/sequels i've ever read, hands down. i totally reccomend it!!
great!.......2006-06-29
Next summer is better than summer boys. The tuttle girls (kelsi, ella, beth minus jamie) go back to the beach. Beth is totally in love with george but sad that he can't go with her this time so she can't help but like the attention of the hot lifegaurd. Kelsi, after what happened last time, wants a boy-free summer but keeps seeing the frat boy Tim, who she thinks is not her type but who knows? :) Ella, is tired of all the hookups and just wants a perfect guy. She finds one, but for once, she can't attract him!
I loved the ending. It's wonderful. Such a happy ending. Can't wait to read 'Oh Baby'!
Summer teen read.......2006-06-18
This is the second of the Summer boys series and it's good. These books remind me of some cheap, lame, predictable yet you-can't-help-but-watch t.v. drama on ABC Family. I'm 17 yrs old and an avid reader so these books seem kind of pointless but I CAN'T PUT T DOWN! I can't wait to see what happens next to these 4 Tuttle girls.
On a more critical note, if your looking for a mind blowing novel this isn't it. This is a good one day reader for the beach. Honestly, it's like a t.v. drama. It's so addicting!
better..........2006-06-16
Although better than the first one, Next Summer is still somewhat flawed. The Tuttle family, back in Pebble Beach a year later minus Jamie, settles in for another summer of deception. Beth is upset when George has to stay home and work for the summer, yet she recovers quickly when she meets Adam, the easy-on-the-eyes lifeguard. Elle is still filled with guilt about helping Peter to cheat on Kelsey last summer, so she decides to go after a 'good boy', but he seems uninterested. Kelsey, who saw Peter with some girl, is determined to find out who that girl was, not knowing that it was Elle. However, Kelsey is sidetracked by adorable Tim. Next Summer definitely picks up the pace.
I couldn't put this book down!.......2006-06-02
My friends got me hooked on the Summer Boys series, and I ended up reading both books in a day! I loved being able to see each character's story from their pont of view, as well as from the other characters'. At times I was absolutely furious at some of the girls, but the majority of the time I was just absorbed in the book, cheering Beth, Kelsi, and Ella on! Well, not really Ella, because she's too risque. But I was cheering for Beth and Kelsi. =]]]

"At a point in life when one is through with boyhood, but has not yet discovered how to be a man, it was my fortune to travel with the most marvelously appealing of teams." Sentimental because it holds such promise, and bittersweet because that promise is past, the first sentence of this masterpiece of sporting literature, first published in the early '70s, sets its tone. What follows only gets better, deeper, more sentimental, and more bittersweet. The team, of course, is the mid-20th-century Brooklyn Dodgers, the team of Robinson and Snyder and Hodges and Reese, a team of great triumph and historical import composed of men whose fragile lives were filled with dignity and pathos. Roger Kahn, who covered that team for the New York Herald Tribune, makes understandable humans of his heroes as he chronicles the dreams and exploits of their young lives, beautifully intertwining them with his own, then recounts how so many of those sweet dreams curdled as the body of these once shining stars grew rusty with age and battered by experience. It is the rare sports book that cannot be contained by the limitations of its genre; it is equal parts journalism, memoir, social history, and poetry.
Book Description
This is a book about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a book by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is a book about what happened to Jackie, Carl Erskine, Pee Wee Reese, and the others when their glory days were behind them. In short, it is a book about America, about fathers and sons, prejudice and courage, triumph and disaster, and told with warmth, humor, wit, candor, and love.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Baseball Book Ever.......2007-10-18
Certainly, this book does not need another adoring review from a nostalgic fan who never saw the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers play. It is universally regarded as a classic in its field. I am an avid baseball fan who devours baseball books yet, amazingly, I never read it. I always thought that this was little more than a fan's love letter to his favorite team, a perennial also-ran who couldn't get past the mighty Yankees. It is not. This book is so much more than that: it is a document of an era and a reflection upon that era and the ways that our society changed during the 15 or so subsequent years.
In ways perhaps unique in baseball literature, Roger Kahn manages to bring alive the feeling of the era. In a poignant poetic style, Kahn describes growing up as a Dodger fan, and the trials and tribulations of the 1952-53 Dodgers, as viewed from the perspective of a fan and a young news writer. Much of it is cast in a rosy glow; yet all the attendant ugliness of the era is neither ignored nor dismissed. It seems somewhat diminished however, as bad things typically happened to other people. The most touching moments are Kahn's personal moments, be they with his family or his team.
The second part of the book, in which years later, Kahn seeks out the members of his team, takes the narrative to a much higher plane. Not merely asking the aging idols to nostalgically remember "the good old days", he instead prods greater reflection from the men. As aging athletes, they all had to come to terms with their mortality in ways that the rest of us do not, and at an age that the rest of us do not. Most of us do not start really feeling our age until our children are grown, and our careers are winding down, and we are facing retirement. Athletes reach that point in life far earlier than the rest of us. While a man (or woman) working, say in the insurance industry, will continue to grow and become more capable throughout their working career, an athlete must change careers, if he is lucky, in his late 30's.
This particular group of athletes was remarkable for another reason. They played alongside Jackie Robinson, and thus desegregated major league baseball, and thereby, personified a great deal of hope for a great many men and women. Hope that not only could Black Americans achieve the same success as white Americans, but that they could get along with each other in the process. By being on the same team, the same side, men who otherwise might have been stunted by their own preconceptions and limitations and bigotries learned to admire and even like other men very different from them.
They also aged during a very tumultuous period in America's cultural development. The Vietnam War was at its peak while Kahn wrote this book, black-white relations in America were perhaps at their most volatile ever. Two players saw their sons fight in Vietnam and return changed - one mentally, the other physically and mentally. Another had a special needs child, at a time when there still were not many services for such children. Other players had come from backgrounds where blacks were not welcome, and returned to such places, no longer sharing that feeling. You get the sense in this book that they are no longer at one with their hometown because of their experiences playing alongside black men.
Plus, the Dodgers left Brooklyn. Their team no longer even existed. The LA Dodgers were not the Brooklyn Dodgers. Truly, an era had ended. Not an era of innocence, nor one that could really be considered "the good old days", although we are often wont to refer to the 1950's as both. But an era of growth, of optimism, of shared experiences for these athletes, and perhaps, vicariously, for their fans.
No Marxism Please.......2007-09-05
I had heard about this book for years, and finally got around to reading it recently. I was immediately turned off when Kahn was describing the influences in his household in New York--most notably Karl Marx. What is it with these people and their love for Marxism? Marxist governments have been responsible for over 100 million deaths worldwide, and yet to this day there are those who gush about how wonderful it is. These people are more than idealists, they are dangerous morons. Since I am not a political neophyte, the mention of Marx disgusted me and detracted from an otherwise good book. Isn't it ironic that if Kahn was living in his Utopian Marxist society, he wouldn't have made the fortune on this book that he made under capitalism?
the game designed to break your heart..........2007-05-25
I read this book many years ago but every summer come baseball season I find myself thinking about it. That's the impression that it left with me. Perhaps not only the best baseball book I ever read but the best book. We relive Roger Kahn's passion of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the names are legendary Robinson, Reese, Erskine, Snider, Campanella, Furillo, Hodges, Branca, Podres, Preacher Roe and of course, Ebbets Field. It covers the 1952 & 1953 seasons of the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5 years before the infamous move to Los Angeles when a city not only lost a baseball team but as Roger Kahn describes to us, a piece of it's soul. Baseball is game designed to break our hearts, ask any Cub fan or red Sox fan or Phillies fan(I still get upset when I think of Mitch Williams vs Joe Carter in the '93 World Series). The Brooklyn Dodgers had 2 seasons for the ages in 1952 & 1953 before succumbing to the hated Yankees in the World Series. A book for the ages.
The Boys Of Summer....The Game That Was.......And Is,No Longer........2007-03-20
I still have my original paperback copy of this. A superb book. What I wouldn't have given to be able to watch played at Ebbets Field. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was the most courageous ballplayer that ever was.The abuse that he took was tolerated, for the most part. The fact that he silently took it,and never retaliated.Being sold to the Giants at the end of 1956,was probably initiated by Alston, whom he never really got along with, anyway. For all of the revelations that ballplayers then drank, cheated on their wives,dirty-played---that hasn't changed. They were paid badly, are badly overpaid today, the wiping out of the Reserve Clause has caused a downward spiral of dilution of talent, the overall greediness of both players and owners-one could not pay me to sit through a game today.People today tend to forget that it wasn't cheap to go to a game in 1963.The average workingman could afford maybe a game or two, during the season. So,to spend well over $100.00 just to attend one night game?? Nope...The strike in 1994 did me in,for good.
The Boys of Summer my review.......2007-02-20
From 1941`1956 The Brooklyn Dodgers were the best team in the National league. The 1952 season is the main season which is good since the 1952 seris was the best. The history part is interesting the way things change between Roger Khans first trip to Ebbets feild and the last game there. Roger Khan is a good story teller his retelling of games and the part where he goes to see the players years later is the best ive read it says a lot about us all.

Book Description
It's the last summer at Pebble Beach before everyone goes off to college. George and Beth are no longer together, but will they make up before Beth heads off to (oh, the irony) GEORGEtown? Kelsi has a new college boy around for the summer, but can he make her pulse flutter the way Tim used to? Meanwhile, Ella runs into a dangerous blast from the past...can she resist him? Between sipping homemade margaritas by the shore, and helping each other through their romantic woes, the Tuttle girls might just make this the craziest, sweetest, most unforgettable summer ever.

didn't like it.......2007-08-30
i was really disappointed with this book. being the end of the series, i expected so much more. i thought that beth and george would go to college together, and tim and kelsi. instead, kelsi got together with boring bennett. and after all that drama she had, about the virginity issue, she just gives it up to bennett in a blink of an eye.
the first two books of the series were addicting, the third one it started falling apart, the fourth one it was way past waste of time.

In the last book of the steamy SUMMER BOYS series, Beth, Ella, and Kelsi are back in Pebble Beach for a summer to remember.
Beth and George are becoming friends, even though they are exes. Some people are just meant to be friends, but is there more to it?

This is a fun summer beach read, but the ending is kind of sad. At the same time, though, it also has a good twist and is really unexpected. LAST SUMMER really is the last good romance of the summer.
