Just getting started.......2007-09-30
Since I've just been getting started riding my bike again, I needed a quick review on keeping my bike in working order. The stuff in this book was laid out nicely and easily accessible even for an old fart like me... It came in really handy this summer as I kept getting flats.
Not that great.......2007-09-18
Pretty lame if you are planning to actually work on your bike opposed to reading about or thinking about doing it. Covers a lot of things in poor detail, so little detail that you could not do it with this book alone. Example: want to install some disk brakes? No way with this book. It also includes info on how to work on really old bikes and outdated equipment. I bet you are dying to know how to work on centerpull road bike brakes which were last made in like 1981! Your're in luck b/c that is covered pretty well. Save your $$ and buy another book.
Excellent book.......2007-09-12
Very useful, complete, lots of pics and understandable for anyone. If you need some help for your bike maintenance that's the book you need.
Excellent book!.......2007-08-14
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to service their own bike. There are many great pictures and it covers a wide variety of bikes.
Too early to tell, but it looks good........2007-08-09
I just received this book recently in the mail from the US, and have not had any need to use it. Without actually testing it out, I can only say that it looks good and has a lot of useful pictures. The price was reasonable, so I can't see why anyone would not want to add it to their repairbook collection.

Book Description
Barnett's Manual has become the industry standard, demystifying every aspect of bicycle repair by emphasizing detail, logic, and measurement. The manual, published in four volumes and printed on perforated, grease-resistant paper, can be used by both bike mechanics and the serious DIY-er. Each chapter is structured logically for maximum use: terminology, reasons for service, prerequisites, tool choices, anticipation of complications, fits and dimensions, service procedures, and troubleshooting. Extensive reference information minimizes the need to cross-reference to other sources when solving a repair problem, and the drawings on nearly every page help explain each procedure. This new, updated edition of the bible of bicycle repair also includes more than 1,000 clear and detailed drawings illustrating each procedure.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Manual.......2007-09-12
This guide covers all the basic and most advanced bicycle repair procedures. Graphics are instructive and clear. As opposed to other manuals it includes good trouble shooting and diagnostic sections. It includes indications, symptoms, maintenance cycles, tools, tool usage, complications, checklists, different types of parts--their specification and dimensions--and it goes on. The only irksome aspect is that after buying the latest print edition I was prompted to buy, at a similar price, the expanded DVD with the latest components. This is not fair.
wow.......2007-06-15
Very impressive. Unfortunately, I can't give it 5 stars because of the price, and the fact that it's a bit dated. Something like this should be on a subscription system, as new parts/procedures come out, pay a small fee and get the new/updated content.
Just what the cyclist ordered.......2007-01-10
Having recently started seriously doing my own work on my bicycle I find these books excellent. I already have the Haynes Bicycle manual which was a useful book to start with but I was looking for one that explained more than just how to make basic adjustments or simple component installations. I particularly like the detailed explanation in each chapter of how the various components on a bike work and the consequences of correct/incorrect adjustment or installation. The range of component types/brands covered in the books is also impressive. The books lean towards the text side of things (hence the 4 volumes) with many well drawn and clear diagrams which may not suit some people.
Detailed Maintenance Manual.......2006-11-04
This set of manuals provides detailed instructions for how to perform maintenance on your bike. I used this manual for instructions on how to build wheels and successfully built my first wheelset. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. If that is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed.
This is not the newest edition.............2006-05-25
Be careful with this purchase, because, although the price
is good for the 4 volumes, it's the 5th edition, and not
the newest 6th edition!
I think the description of the item doesn't make this
clear at all, and some folks may be disappointed.

Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Zinn differs from other how-to books by guiding readers--with plain-speaking text--through almost every imaginable repair on almost every imaginable part. He covers everything from rebuilding hubs, to loosening seized stems, to installing six different types of bottom brackets. He even risks cycling blasphemy by walking mere mortals through the art of wheel building--an intimidating task that can take years to perfect. Although best suited for the old pros, his guide is user- friendly, funny, and essential to anyone willing to love their bike. --Ben Tiffany

Detailed diagrams and simple instructions explain everything from repairing a flat tire to building a wheel. This timely revision offers updated information on shock pump adaptors, master links, V-brakes, cleat mounting and pedal overhaul, oversize handlebars, carbon steering tubes, tubeless rims, and much more. Repairs are rated for degree of difficulty while line drawings illustrate how parts fit together and show the tools needed to keep bikes in top shape and pedaling smoothly both on and off the trail.

A great intro to mountain bike maintenance.......2007-10-09
What can I add that hasn't already been said earlier?
If you can get the book and the dvd. This has been a great introduction for myself as I wanted to learn how to best maintain my mountain bike. It has proven to be very accessible for even a beginner like myself and yet not feel like I'm being talked down to by the author.
I only recently bought this and already some of the maintenance & repairs I've done have saved some serious cash. Now as I walk into the local bicycle shop I know what I need for the tasks at hand.
For the maintenance and repairs I do now I save myself money and also I spare the time of the local bicycle mechanics by not taking it in for maintenance jobs I can now do. They have noted this and do appreciate it.
Clear, well writen and with good schemes and graphics.......2007-08-03
I found that this was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, simple when it can be simple and not oversimplified when the things are complicated. If you are like me a MTB enthusiast with inclinations to understand, maintain and even repair ocasionally your bike, this is the book for you. Not that it covers only basic material, but it is friendly to newcomers that will, I believe, enjoy putting their hands on the bike.
Search the internet, its cheaper.......2007-07-09
Good book, easy to read and understand.
Yet I still feel the internet is a much greater resource which the ability to search for specific problems, rather than browsing problems, and ability to talk with people (such as on forums).
Great if you want a book though.
great textbook.......2007-05-21
This is a nicely written and very informative book--a must for anyone who wants to do his/her own maintenence on a mountain bike. For long-time and experienced mechanics, much will be review, but there are always those little things that you haven't done before, or have changed with new equipment. This book gives you the proper approach in a clear, no-nonsense fashion.
very helpful.......2007-04-11
I'm not a techie biker; I don't know all about bikes and components. I like this book and use it for general maintenance. It covers many different types of components. I do sometimes have a little trouble matching up the pictures and descriptions to reality. Glad I bought it.

Customer Reviews:
Useful Book.......2007-09-15
This is a great book for anyone interested in maintaining his mountain bike by himself. It is intended for someone starting out and the book also has recommendations for more advanced maintenance topics. There are lots of illustrations which is quite useful for a do-it-yourself book such as this one. The book even gives specific examples for some major brand item repair work. Highly recommended.
Nice book but not great.......2007-05-09
After reading the other reviews I was expecting this book to be the only book that I would need when it comes to mountain bike maintenance. However, I ended up being a bit disappointed.
The photos are fine and there is a lot of material included but the author is awfully verbose and some of the advice he gives contradicts with other repair manuals. Reading the book is akin to listening to repair advice by some friend who has fixed his own car a couple of times but who isn't really a car mechanic by training.
Sadly, I will still have to rely on a bike tool manufacturer's website for maintenance guides.
Good reference........2007-01-13
Loaded with nice full-color photographs and clear directions, this book is a great reference for anyone looking at performing some basic maintenance on his or her bike. The large page size definitely calls for a two-column text layout, but that's a minor quibble. Content is king, and the book delivers on its promise.
That said, the Park Tools website contains a good deal of the same info, and tends to be updated as trends and components change. The Park Tools book is also a good deal, and most local bike shops carry it (a good opportunity to support your local economy).
Clear instructions reinforced with good diagrams and photographs.......2006-08-04
Clear instructions on how the bike and associated parts work, how to fix with good drawings or photos to clarify the text.
A great asset to my bookshelf.
Excellent, well laid out and up to Date.......2006-07-17
This book is the best description of cycling maintenance that I have seen. Lots of clear pictures, great layout thorough explanation with great tips that come from experience. The best part about this book? It covers all this current technologies on bikes. Eg how to bleed hydro breaks, how to dismantle and service some common brand forks and rear shocks, sealed bearings etc. A lot of work has gone into this book and it deserves the 5 stars. Cheers.

Perfect for the Home Bike Mechanic.......2007-09-30
I have worked on bikes at my house for over 25 years and this manual is PERFECT for the home mechanic. The photos and RIGHT TO THE POINT details will help get you back on the road or trail. I live in Arizona and prefer to fix my bike at home vs. back and forth to the shop. I still take my bikes to the shop for an Annual Cleaning and Tune Up. I do this for safety reasons and to check out new bikes. Keep on Biking!
OK book, but title is a bit off.......2007-03-18
Just got "spammed" by Amazon to write a review, so here we go:
Content: This book gives you an overview of most parts of the bike, with the most common variations on a part (usually mountainbike, road bike and hybrid or BMX). It is not exhaustive and not entirely up to date, but it will give you an idea of how a bike works. It is NOT a "repair" manual, it is however a "bike parts for dummies" book and a bit of basic maintenance.
What it did for me: I did not know much about bikes before the weekend, today I walked into a store and ordered an entire bike part by part. The book allowed me to understand the basics, the internet filled me in on the specifics.
In short: if you already know what a bottom bracket, a V-brake and a crankset is and if you can tell apart a threaded headset from an unthreaded, stay away from this book. If not, and you don't want to look stupid on your next visit to the bikeshop, lay out the 11 bucks. It will also help you a bit on basic maintenance, but not on repairs.
3 stars because it's good value.
Covers the Basics.......2007-03-05
The manual is good on the the basics. It explains in clear steps with helpful photos. I would buy again.
Bike Repair Made Easy........2006-11-07
Excellent starting place to learn about basic bicycle repair. Good pictures and easy to follow instructions.
Tops marks for graphics, organization, editing, comprehensive.......2006-08-20
With over 159 glossy colored pages, this handy manual for
bicycles covering everything that is new upto 2006, such
as Shimano Deore derailleurs, MTB, hybrids, front suspensions, hubs, wheels, pedal, and more ......is extremely well priced for the information contained.
Of course, the book's brevity, and size (handbook size) is intended more for bicycle store management and sales people, who need to understand the workings, part names, bike styles, and overall mechanics to be able to do their jobs. Indeed, if someone doesn't know the proper name of parts, how can they function ? e.g. chainring, crank arm, cassette, freehub, wheel jig, etc.
It also compares different types of brakes (v brakes, disk, etc.) and gives their pro's and con's, and explains the principles underlying their functionality.
Some specific mechanic repairs or adjustments are well explained, such as optimizing the spokes and rims, headsets, and also provides advice to ride safely.
Overall, as said, worth the investment. However, if you really
need step by step, detailed walk thu's of disassembly and reassembly of parts, and work as a mechanic, I suggest looking elsewhere, as you are not a novice.
Customer Reviews:
Solid book of basics on bicycle maintenance.......2002-11-19
If you've never worked on a bike before this is a good book to start your journey. It goes over all of the adjustments and maintenance items you will need to pay attention to on your bike.
Downside is that a good portion of the bike technology they cover is no longer standard equipment on current bikes. This isn't enough of a problem to not recommend the book however. And could actually be useful if you pick up an older used bike that you want to get back in operating condition.
Excellent graphics and easy to read directions make this a solid choice for the beginning bike mechanic. One note: You will need a few bike specific tools to work on your steed.
Pros:
Excellent design & Layout
Easy to understand
Comprehensive
Cons:
Comprehensive
rag paper pages
For beginning bikers only.......2002-11-06
First off, I have been a fairly serious mountain biker and road cyclist for many years. I have taken my bike into the shop for tune ups all this time, and was looking for something that would help me do it on my own...primarily focused on derailer and brake work.
For a beginner, and by that I mean someone who has never been serious on a bike, this is probably a good book to start with. However, if you have riden at a moderate or above level, this is not the book for you.
It took until page 46 before I got past all of the things us frequent cyclists know and take for granted...checking your tire for wear (thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that!), switching tubes (you have to learn that quick), adjusting seat height, what to carry in a bike field kit, etc. When it finally gets to the good stuff, I don't think it does a good enough job with the tune-up and repair items...not enough detail. In addition, he tries to cover all bikes, so there is not enough detail on any type. It would be good to have more detail on bike computers too.
Perhaps there is a need for a book that specializes in road bikes, one in mtn bikes, and one in cruisers, the first two being at an advanced biker level.
To sum up: good if you are a beginner, bad if you are advanced.
A superbly presented guide and first-rate reference.......2002-09-06

Customer Reviews:
still the BIBLE of bike maintenance and repair.......2007-10-05
Though dated relative to the specific models explained, the operational essentials of bicycle repair are still the same, and this book covers it all, and I mean ALL. EVERY DETAIL, no matter how obscure or hidden is covered and depicted. When I got my hardback copy back in 1973, I was so impressed that I took everything apart on my brand new Schwinn Super Sport just to see how the parts, pieces and fittings looked, worked, felt, and adjusted and, especially, the specific tools required (I purchased and still have many of the basic tools to use on my present bike, on which I commute full-time), confident in Glenn's instructions on putting it all back together. I was right! I adjusted and positioned the handlebars and seat heights properly to fit me for safe and comfortable riding. I dis- and re-assembled front and rear wheel hub and bearing assemblies (lock washers, cones, cups, bearings, grease packing, axles), brakes (cable-tensioning/adjustment, lubrication, handle positioning), bottom bracket, front and rear derailleurs, pedals, sprocket clusters - I even confidently took apart the entire freewheel, including internals like tension springs and pawls. About the only thing I didn't try were spoke adjustments and replacements, and I didn't puncture my tire to try the patch/repair procedures. Glenn explained and pictured everything! I have never seen it's equal. Other books may be necessary for the few new (not necessarily better) features now offered on bicycles, but none cover bicycle maintenance and repair as well as Glenn's. Buy it! You'll be pleased you did.
GLENN'S BIKE MANUAL FOR DECENT MECHANICS.......2005-05-07
11 chapters and 60+ subchapters about how to take care of your bike, inspect parts for corrosion and wear, and more.
The How and Why book of bicycles. Step-by-step instructions for complete disassembly, assembly, inspection, adjustment, and maintenance of American, European, and Japanese Built bicycles- hubs, stems, hanger sets, and all. Each Task is supported with keyed Photographs and/or Detailed Drawings clearly depicting what should be done and how. Tells you how to make an intelligent purchase, assemble, test, and adjust your new bicycle from Packing Crate to Comfortable Riding. Explains how to fit your machine to "you" and how to maintain it for Maximum Efficiency. Notes on Cross-country Touring in the US and abroad, and related regulations to educate you in advance. A rather complete guide.

Customer Reviews:
Great bicycle book for beginners and experts.......2004-08-12
Zinn's brand new book (2004) is must have in any bike enthusiast's library. Building on his excellent maintenance books, which go into every detail of fixing and tuning your bike, the cycling primer is abundant with tips and tricks to improve riding skills.
Ok, I ride a Zinn bike and might be biased but he is a competent author who used to race internationally and who explores unorthodox ways to cater for special needs of tall (and short) people. The book goes into great detail on how to properly fit a bike, tune it and a good overview on training techniques. I enjoyed reading it and will keep consulting it.

Your local bike mechanic might have you thinking that "wrenching" is right up there with rocket science. But the truth is, anyone can master the ins and outs of bicycle maintenance if he or she has a good teacher. In lieu of a professor, the editors of Bicycling and Mountain Bike magazines have created a shop companion, which they refer to as "another tool for working on your bike." They guide you from the basics of your preride checklist to tuning your derailleurs and overhauling your hubs. And they offer updated info on maintaining front shocks and even a handful of rear suspensions. What's more, they can walk you through the arduous task of rebuilding ancient parts that some shop mechanics haven't even heard of. If you've ever tried to work on your own car, you've undoubtedly developed a healthy fear of automobile shop manuals. But unlike the cryptic list of part numbers and equations you'll find at Pep Boys, this guide is written by people who want you to see just how rewarding bike maintenance can be. --Ben Tiffany
Book Description
With over 300 photos and lots of illustrations, this guide to the repair of bicycles covers everything from basic road bikes to highly sophisticated mountain bikes with multiple gear systems.
Customer Reviews:
Not very helpful.......2005-04-13
I bought this book a while ago and am now trying to use it as a reference as I build my own bike starting with just a frameset. The authors obviously know their stuff but I find the presentation of the information in this book somewhat inadequate. They could use more pictures, diagrams, labeling of pictures, etc. Also, obviously the book is very much outdated. I was in the bookstore the other day and glanced thru what I believe is the updated version and it appears to be pretty much the same. I even found the exact same paragraphs and pictures in the updated version. I think this book is okay but I seriously doubt it could serve as your only reference.
Not "Complete" by a long shot........2001-08-28
Maybe I should have known that a book of this limited volume could not possibly have presented a complete treatment of bicycle maintenance and repair, especially for road bikes "AND" mountain bikes. But, what "is" in the book should at least be well presented. It is not. Instead, it appears that this book is written as a reminder for people who already know what the author(s) are talking about and who have done it before, not for Joe Blow / Never done it Before consumer. If you are a rank beginner then the section on changing tires will be of help, but anything else out of this book will leave you frustrated with the sketchy, incomplete, and poorly communicated explanations. Save your money on this book and a work stand and just take the bike to a bike mechanic; or, perhaps look into "Barnett's Manual" or "Sutherland's Handbook for Bicycle Mechanics".
Comprehensive bicycle repair manual in need of update.......1999-06-10
Well written, comprehensive guide with B&W photos and line drawings but the absence of labelling on photographs is a serious oversight. Unfortunately it is overdue for a new edition. A lot has changed since 1994 when this book was published. I hope the editors break information down into smaller, 'easier to bite' sections with future editions.
Good basic but outdated information.......1999-03-03
This is a good book to get started with, but don't expect to see an explanation about your components if you purchased your bike after 1995.
A good introduction to the basics.......1999-01-20
I have to object to the negative reviews posted here--this book is not meant to be a guide to state of the art equipment. And while it might have been useful to include diagnostics, the truth is if you familiarize yourself with the principles of bicycle mechanics and repair elucidated here you should have a good headstart on figuring out any problems which might arise. Copiously illustrated and easy-to-follow, this book is aimed at people (like me) who never thought to take bicycle repair into their own hands. My grease-stained copy will guide me for years to come--if it helps me keep my '91 Trek 830 running as smoothly as it does now I won't need to worry about the latest innovations.
