Book Description
This is the moving story of how Jackie Robinson became the first black player on a major league baseball team and how on a fateful day in Cincinnati, PeeWee Reese took a stand and declared Jackie his teammate.

the hardship in baseball.......2003-06-17
Teammates
Teammates is about 2 men named
Pees wee Reese and Jackie Robinson. Both of them were baseball players on the same
Team called the dogers. Pee wee
Reese was white and Jackie rob-
Inson was black. They were both
Friends and helped each other out. The players on their team
Came mostly from the south, men
Had been taught to avoid black
People since childhood. They moved to another table
Whenever Jackie sat down next
To them. Many opposing players
Were cruel to Jackie, calling him mean names from their
Dugouts. A few tried to hurt
Him with their spiked shoes.
It was bad for Jackie. Pitchers
Aimed for his head, and he
Received threats on his life,
Both from individuals and from
Oramizations like the Ku Klux
Klan. Jackie avoided all of it,
And made the team. Jackie and
Pee wee became really great
Friends and baseball legends.
Awesome!.......2002-12-03
This book teaches you alot about how blacks were treated back in the day. When Jackie Robinsion was signed to the Dodgers the fans and players treated him really badly. People threw stuff at him. Then a young teammate stood up for him and saved him from being ban from the team. So you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.
classic.......2002-08-29
A simple telling of how Jackie Robinson came to play in the major leagues, this book portrays the prejudice he faced in a basic way that children can understand. And it shines a bright light on a quiet moment: PeeWee Reese's brave public declaration of solidarity with his teammate. This book has been my son's favorite for the past two years, since he was five.
Brooklyn Dodger Teammates: Jackie Robinson & Pee Wee Reese.......2002-04-02
"Teammates" tells the story of one of the more moving moments in the history of baseball that occurred during the 1947 season when the Brooklyn Dodgers traveled to Crosley Field in Cincinnati to play the Reds. Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in the major leagues, was playing first base and being the target of hostility and abuse from the fans. At shortstop was Harold "Pee Wee" Reese, who born in the South, but who had refused to join other Southerners on the team in signing a petition to kick Jackie off the team. That day in Cincinnati, Reese did something that remains one of the bright moments of that historic season and which deserves to be more than a minor footnote in baseball history.
"Teammates" is written by Peter Golenbock, who heard the story of what happened that day from Rex Barney, who pitched for the Dodgers that day. Usually when the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the "color line" in baseball, the other key person in the story is Branch Rickey, the Dodger general manager. But Rickey could only support Robinson from the front office and not on the field, where it was Pee Wee Reese who decided to do something about that. Consequently, it is Reese who emerges as the hero of this particular story. Certainly it is safe to assume that anyone who reads this book knows something about Jackie Robinson; Golenbock talks about how Rickey needed somebody special to be the first, but does not get into the reasons why Robinson was that man (e.g., All-American football star at U.C.L.A., Army officer). But clearly "Teammates" is not intended to be the first book a youngster reads about the story of Jackie Robinson. Paul Bacon, as he did for the exquisite "Susanna of the Alamo," does both the design and illustration for this volume, combining historic photographs and items with his own watercolor paintings to tell the story.
A few brave men.......2000-07-04
This book is a true story that vividly describes the era of baseball and the scoial climate of race relations in the early 1940's. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the first Major Leauge Baseball team to hire an African American. Branch Rickey of the Dodgers was looking for "a man strong enough not to fight back". Jackie Robinson was of course that man and it was known as the "Great Experiment". It was tough for Jackie who ws not well recieived by many whites, including his teammates. One teammate was different, he knew he should always do what is right even if everyone around him including family or friends felt differently, that man was Pewee Reese. This book looks at how racism affected many aspects of society and how the strength of one indidual can change many attitudes. There is a variety of mediums used for the illustrations that only enhance the book.

As baseball legend Ted Williams lay dying in Florida, his old Boston Red Sox teammates Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio piled into a car and drove 1,300 miles to see their friend. Another member of the close-knit group, Bobby Doerr, remained in Oregon to tend to his wife who had suffered a stroke. Besides providing a poignant travelogue of the elderly Pesky and DiMaggio's trip, David Halberstam's The Teammates goes back in time to profile the men as young ballplayers. Although it is enlightening to learn about Doerr, Pesky, and DiMaggio, the leader of the group and star of the book is Williams. Halberstam portrays the notoriously moody and difficult Williams as a complex man: driven by a rough childhood and a fiercely competitive nature to become perhaps the greatest pure hitter of all time while also being a magnetic personality and loving friend. While there is nothing exceptionally unusual about old men who have stayed friends (plenty of people stay friends, after all), baseball gives this particular relationship a unique makeup. Unlike most friendships, that of Williams, Doerr, Pesky, and DiMaggio was viewed all summer long by hooting, hollering Red Sox fans. As such, their bond is forged both of individual accomplishment, win-loss records, numerous road trips, and, since they played for the Red Sox, annual doses of disappointment. Halberstam, author of Summer of '49 and October 1964 is the ideal writer to tell two equally intriguing stories, both rich in America's pastime. Although he occasionally drops himself into the narrative, one expects that of Halberstam and gladly accepts it in exchange for the highly readable exposition infused with poetic majesty that has become his trademark. --John Moe

Halberstam frequently interviewed Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Johnny Peske. In this book, Halberstam offers a rare glimpse into the special lives and friendships of these men. But it focuses on the more than 50-year friendship among them and serves as a testament to loyalty and the bonds of friendship. Complete with stories of their glory days with the Boston Red Sox, their lifelong friendship, and the reaction of the remaining three to the death of Ted Williams, THE TEAMMATES is a must-buy for anyone who wants to know more about these legends but more importantly, for those who want a close look at the type of friendship that comes only through sharing trials and triumphs over many years.

Stupidity in living color.......2007-09-16
Good books need no blurbs, they can speak for themselves. This one has at least ten blurbs on the covers.
If you're curious about just how much of a bastard Ted Williams really was, read the book and marvel at the stature of a person who would repeatedly curse out a friend for "not fishing right". Then find out about his son's exploitive tendencies, presumably learned from his father. (Nah, a cryofreezing company would never, ever, not in a billion years, pay anyone to freeze their famous father. Couldn't possibly happen.)
I feel sorry for the other three guys who got lumped in with this mess, because they seem like reasonably decent people. And some of the stories are entertaining, though I felt like I had to fight through a lot of unnecessary verbiage to get there.
If you're in the target audience (people who worship sports heroes) this probably will work well for you. I was quite disappointed, and I'm not likely to read any of the author's other works; the effort wasn't worth it.
Nicely done by Mr. Halberstam.......2007-05-27
This is an intimate story of friendship between four ballplayers who were the stars of their team. It is a wonderful journey of friendship that passes through nearly 60 years. This provides some great insight especially for those of us who watch baseball now and can forget that these people are human beings with interesting lives and not just big money iconoclasts.
Well Done Book About Baseball and Friendship.......2007-05-16
"The Teammates" begins and ends with a trip taken in October 2001 by former Red Sox players Dominic DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky (along with local television personality Dick Flavin) to visit a dying Ted Williams. The three, along with Bobby Doerr who could not make the trip, were not only teammates but also friends for years. "The Teammates" is the story of the friendship between four entirely different men.
"The Teammates" is a wonderful and thoroughly engrossing book about baseball and friendship. Baseball was different back then and with the exception of Pesky, the only team the four played for was the Red Sox which helped cement their friendship. David Halberstam does a terrific job of catching the personality of each player. While it would have been easy to focus just on Ted Williams, he focuses equally on each player and readers get to know all four as individuals by the end of the book. Johnny "needle nose" Pesky, who still works for the Red Sox, became a Red Sox player because his family liked the Red Sox representative; old-fashioned and all American boy Bobby Doerr, was the closest to Williams; Dom DiMaggio, playing in the shadow of his brothers, struggled to make it to the big leagues; and of course Ted Williams, immensely talented and as hard on himself as he was on the people in his life. "The Teammates" is filled with anecdotes about the players including two memorable encounters between Williams and Pedro Ramos, a young pitcher for Washington and a fishing trip that Williams and Doerr took in the early 1960's that tested Doerr's patience and friendship. Williams was a complex, not always likable, person and Halberstam does a remarkable job of creating an even-handed profile of him. Some of the interesting information in the book includes how Tom Yawkey almost blew the deal that landed Ted Williams; how much pitching has changed these days (back then teams had more than one pitcher who won 20 - 25 games a year); and how Williams was called to serve in both World War II and Korea and how the dynamics of the Red Sox had changed by the time Williams got back from Korea. Halbertstam also touches on the Red Sox "curse" notably in the 1946 World Series in which DiMaggio got hurt and Pesky was considered the goat for years, which he quietly accepted. The book ends, as it began, with the surviving teammates as they are today.
"The Teammates" is a well done book about friendship.
They Killed My Father, Now They're Coming After Me.......2007-05-10
"Marty Nolan, the former editorial page editor of the 'Boston Globe', once famously described the pain that came with being a Red Sox fan, "They killed my father, now they're coming after me". Johnny Pesky
Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dom DiMaggio, and Johnny Pesky were all members of the famed 1940's Boston Red Sox. Their careers led the Red Sox to a pennant championship and ensured the men a place in sports history.
David Halberstam, had followed the members of the 1949 championship Boston Red Sox team for years, especially Williams, Doerr, DiMaggio, and Pesky. He met up with the fellas and learned about their friendship and their trip. He knew he wanted to write about it. David Halberstam gives us an inside look at how these four teammates became friends, and how that friendship thrived for more than 60 years.
The book opens with Johnny Pesky, Dom DiMaggio and , Dick Flavin a friend, on a 1300-mile car trip travelling to see the ailing Ted Williams in Florida. It's the last time they will see him. The journey is filled with nostalgia and memories, but seeing Ted is a shock. The most physically dominating of the four friends, Ted now weighs only 130 pounds and is hunched over in a wheelchair. Dom, without even thinking about it, starts to sing opera and old songs like "Me and My Shadow" to his friend. They had a short memorable time with Ted,and it was worth it. Every morning until the day Ted Williams died, Dom would call him with an update of the Sox.
"This book is filled with stories of their wonderful days with the Boston Red Sox, memories of plays and players, and the reaction of the remaining three to Ted Williams' death. The Teammates offers us a glimpse into the lives of these Red Sox men. and great insight into the nature of loyalty and friendship. The book tries not to dwell on the imposing power, problems, and slugging achievements of Ted Williams or reveal new sensational material or revelations. Halberstam focuses on the teammates' shared attributes: their desire to compete and succeed in baseball, their willingness to learn how to use physical/mental talents, how to provide for post-depression families yet display genuine appreciation and gratitude for each other's contributions and careers." David Johnson
For any Red Sox fan, baseball fan and David Halberstam fan this book is a must. A book of love of fellow man and baseball. It is a rare book that fills the reader with hope for the future of baseball.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 5-09-07
Great book on the power of long term friendship.......2007-04-24
A great book on the power of lifetime friendships. While the focus of the book was Williams, it was great learn more about Dom Dimaggio, who lived in the shadow of his brother and Williams.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Teammate: A Great Book!!!.......2007-09-21
I've got several Mickey Mantle books, but I really think this one is the best. Very detailed and accurate. Well done!
THE MICK.......2007-08-17
My kids grew up wanting to BE LIKE MIKE. Like many of my generation, I always wanted to be like Mick. THE MICK.
Mickey Mantle was, for us, the consummate baseball player. He hit the ball hard and ran the bases fast. His arm was strong and his glove golden.
But that's only part of why he was our hero. Randall Swearingen's book, A Great Teammate, covers the rest. Mickey was one of the greatest team players the game has ever known. He found a way to win. One day he'd hit a home run. The next he'd bunt and steal--or literally outrun a fly ball. It added up. Between 1951 and 1964, Mickey's Yankees made twelve trips to the World Series. Twelve!
When his teammates batted, Mickey cheered. When they slumped, he took them to dinner. When Roger wilted in the Babe's mighty shadow, Mickey took him under his wing and into his home--even as The Mick took his own shot at THE RECORD.
Mickey played hurt nearly every game of his major league career because, as a rookie, he deferred to a teammate named Joe DiMaggio. Mickey never complained or made excuses. He just came to the park early, took his treatments, hid the pain, and played hard. As good as he was, he could have been even better with two legs rather than one.
When asked why he didn't take himself out of the lineup to rest the legs, Mickey replied that some child might come to the ball park to watch him play, and he didn't want to let that child down. Mickey didn't know it, but I was that child. My family drove from North Carolina to New York City in 1961. It was the only chance I ever had, as a kid, to watch a major league game. Mickey didn't disappoint: he hit a line drive into the right field bleachers for a home run. From then on, Mickey was my hero. And, like so many southerners in those days, I became, of all things, a Yankee.
Then came the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Sportswriters forgot who Mickey Mantle was and why he had been our hero. They publicized his alcoholism. His business failures. His divorce. If only he had fallen in his prime, they implied, like Gehrig with ALS or Ruth with cancer. But somehow he dodged the Hodgkin's curse. And even though alcoholism is every bit as much a disease as ALS, or cancer, or Hodgkin's, America stopped loving Mickey the way he had loved us. We forgot. And, I must admit, as I almost forgot.
Then I read A Great Teammate, and the memories came pouring back. Mickey winning games for his team. Mickey bringing out the best in his teammates. Mickey loving and respecting the game. Playing hard. Playing hurt. Always humble. Ever helpful. Never making excuses. And, in bottom of the 9th, whipping his toughest foe, alcoholism, and helping others do the same.
No doubt, Old Timers told these stories time and again at ball games, fantasy camps, reunions, and funerals. But, no one ever bothered to write them down for us, the fans. Until now. Mickey, Randall: thank you.
Great gift for Mantle fan.......2007-05-15
Very impressed with book - my son is big fan and loves it.
Mantle family feels dad would love this book. .......2007-05-02
It was very important to our dad that he be remembered as a great teammate and this book does an excellent job of explaining why he was admired, not only by the fans but his teammates and opponents as well. Randall went to great lengths to research the relevant details of key events in dad's career in order to show the magnitude of dad's courage, competitiveness, loyalty, determination, athleticism and perseverance both on and off the field. Randall spent time with dad and his teammates at the Mickey Mantle fantasy camps and his knowledge and love of dad really shows in this book. Reading the book brought back many great memories and magically transported us back in time to our childhood. The Mantle family gives this book a big "thumbs up" and wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to Randall for writing this inspiring and enjoyable book that beautifully echoes our deep love and respect for our dad. "A true teammate". - Merlyn, David and Danny Mantle
Heroic, Inspirational, Tragic Figure ..........2007-04-26
Excellent chronology of many highlights of Mickey's career ... especially the descriptions of those monsterous home runs ... no one before or since has had "power for distance" that Mickey had ... lists his lifetime stats, offense and defense, in the back of the book ...
the numerous descriptions of Mickey by his beloved teamates gives the reader clear insight into what kind of person Mickey was ...
the quintessential teammate who gave everything he had on and off the field to win and help his teammates ... e.g., playing in tremendous amounts of pain (so as not to disappoint, in case the father of a poor family took his boy once a year to see him play); at restaurants, picking up "the check" most of the time; insisting that old teammates come to autograph sessions (or he wouldn't attend) so they could make money too; and the lovable prankster (the "TP" prank)...
truly a one of a kind, the last of the 4 great Yankees (Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle), one of those who really was head and shoulders above the rest, and he was the last player to connect us to the baseball of a by-gone era ...
and to prove it all, he's got his own 4,500 lb. monument in Center Field! I could go on and on ... but ... the book is well worth the money ... buy it!

Book Description
Tiki and Ronde are brothers, best friends, and teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings football team. It's the last preseason game against their arch-rival Knights -- and the football is suddenly knocked out of Tiki's grip. What gives, he thinks, I've always carried the ball this way before.
Inspired by Coach Mike, who tells Tiki, "You've gotta believe," Tiki begins secret practice sessions with Ronde in the morning on the way to school. Will it make a difference in the next big game against the Knights?
Based on the childhoods of NFL superstars Tiki and Ronde Barber, this story of determination and of confidence will inspire all who read it.

TEAMMATES.......2007-05-26
I LIKED THE CONCEPT OF THE STOREY, i BROUGHT THE BOOK FOR MY 6 YEAR OLD GRANDSON WHO HAD A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THE VOCABULARY. AND KEEPING HIS ATTENTION AND KEEPING IT FOR THE ENTIRE BOOK WAS NOT EASY. WE READ A LITTLE EVERY DAY WITH US TAKING TURNS READING AND MY HELPING WITH SOME OF THE WORDS AFTER WHICH HE ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH. ALSO SEEING CHARACTERS THAT LOOK SIMULAR TO HIM AND HIS FRIENDS HE REALLY LOVED WE WILL BE READING IT AGAIN WE READ A BOOK EVERY TIME HE VISITS WHICH IS TWO TO THREE TIMES A WEEK AND THAT IS OUR SPECIAL TIME. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS.
Good message, poor writing.......2007-02-28
Overall this book has a good message, but the writing is really amateurish. You can tell Tiki and Ronde are not professional writers. If your kids like football, they will like this book. Just don't expect Roald Dahl.
Teammates.......2007-01-10
Tiki and Ronde Barber share their feelings in this book about what it means to be on a team. These two professional football players are true sportsmen and give young football players someone to look up to.
Teammates.......2007-01-05
I have a son who hates to read, but he loves football. So this series of books has been great for him. This newest book in the series is good, but didn't seem to keep his attention as much as Game Day did. I really love the story of this book. What kid has not been on a team and felt like they were letting the team down? My boy's coach is really hard on the kids so I loved pointing out that just because someone is having trouble with a certain thing that doesn't mean they are a bad kid or a bad player. And in this book when the kid being asked to give up his position ends up being an NFL Allstar - well what better point to make. I think this will help my boy realize that what his coaches or teammates think of him at 8, 10 or even in high school doesn't always ring true. Its up to him and his efforts
A great little read :-).......2006-10-18
I reviewed Game Day earlier in the year after buying it for my nephew and both he and I (yes I admit it) loved it. Full of great pictures and a nice message, this is similar to Game Day in that respect.
Both Tiki and Ronde have written this together (it's also going to be their last book in this series). It's about learning how to be a team, which these days (after seeing kids and parents brawl) is an important message. It's also about perserverance, and learning to rely on family. They base their stories loosely around their own childhood experiences growing up playing ball so the story is sincere. Now that they each play for the NFL (Tampa Bay and the Giants), these brothers are hero's to little kids and so their words are more inspiring and meaningful. That's a big appeal in their books.
In Teammates, they are teammates on the Cave Spring Vikings and when Tiki is upset over the way he plays a game, his coach inspires him to believe in himself. So with the help of his brother Ronde, they secretly practice each morning before school to help give Tiki's game a lift and help him hold onto the ball.
It's well written and the pictures are as good as always. It is inspirational to kids and they make it enjoyable. I really think all kids will love it and find lessons in here, and it will make an excellent birthday gift to a little one be it boy or girl.

Stockton & Malone are different people but best friends,.......1999-11-19
This is the first time I have ever read this book. I thought it was great. This book proves you can be of different color, different religion, and of different build and still be best friends. Even though I don't like the Utah Jazz, I thought this book described the Utah Jazz,Stockton, and Malone very well. This book proves that even if you were once poor, you never forget where you came from.I would read this book or another book by this author if I could.
Satisfy your "Basketball Jones".......1998-10-18
Wow. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Karl Malone and John Stockton, then I picked up Mr. Schnakenberg's book. All I can say is, he's painted a vivid portrait of two TRUE hardwood superstars. Their antics on and off the court are entertaining and inspiring. The writing is crisp, and the grammar is impeccable.
Schnakenberg... He shoots....He SCORES!.......1998-10-04
I admit, when my daughter brought this book home for a book report, my expectations were high. We both loved Mr. Schnakenberg's Scottie Pippen book, and didn't think he could top it. We were both pleasantly surprised. Once again, he has put together an informative and entertaining book. I know it is officially a "Young Adult's" offering, but I was not ashamed to borrow it from my daughter and bring it to work to read over lunch. When a co-worker noticed it he picked it up out of curiosity. Now my daughter has to borrow it from the library again so HE can finish it. I hope Mr. Schnakenberg continues to provide his own personal brand of wit to both young and old alike. He is rapidly distinguishing himself as one of our premiere "Young Adult" authors.
A slam bang funfest!.......1998-02-27
Schnakenberg's dazzling dual biography of John Stockton and Karl Malone proves once again that he is the master of middle grade biography. I heartily recommend this rich tapestry of basketball storytelling.

Rescue hero fans delight!.......2006-02-25
My grandson loved this. He is a Rescue Hero fan. I thought the stories were rather repetitive and uninteresting but what's a grandma to know.
Encouragement for Choosing Honorable Heroes.......2006-02-24
This book is wonderful. It gives individual accounts for all the Rescue Heros on what encouraged them to become Rescue Heroes. My son loves Rescue Heroes and My Husband and I love the values that they represent. My son's heroes are policemen, firemen, Doctors, scientist's, etc. I appreciate this much more than having his heroes be superheroes with super-abilities that use physical violence to catch bad guys. Rescue Heroes protect and rescue people and animals from natural disasters. A thumbs up to Fisher-Price for keeping toys with good values in their line of toys.
Stereotypical story for Young Rescue Hero Fans.......2006-01-16
The book covers most of the major characters with a picture and a story about how they became a Rescue Hero. From an adult prospective it is not very creative. The story for each character is pretty predictable. But for really young kids who are the true fans, it is neat for them to get a story behind their favorite character. The stories are about a page long so if the child is not that into Rescue Heroes as does not have a long attention span they may find the book boring. My four year loves the Rescue heroes, so of course he loved this book. But I believe once he no longer loves the Rescue Heroes he probaly will not care at all about the book.
Great if you're new to Rescue Heroes.......2005-12-30
Buy this book if you have absolutely no idea who these guys are. I certainly didn't until we read this book - it contains a synopsis of each of the heroes and how they decided to become the people they are now. It is very, very interesting and it captivates young children quite easily. They each tell a story of something that happened to them in their lives when they were young that made them decide to become a rescue hero. I highly recommend it again, if you're new to this series. However, if you're looking for a story, this one definitely is not the choice. But, I think every fan should have this book to read and reread about their favorite hero. I also think that someone at Fisher Price should hire someone that could write more interesting stories for these guys. This is absolutely a fantastic idea and they should spend some more time developing it!
Helps parents too!.......2005-08-03
My 4yr. old son loves this book, not only because it's a Rescue Hereos book but also because there are so many of them noted inside. He loves to count them, learn about each one and see what each was looks like. The prices are reasonable, it continues to keep my son interested in reading and it's a reference for me as a parent when buying or suggesting gifts.

Book Description
Reggie White's premature death last Christmas shocked the sports world. How could this phenomenal fortress of muscle and mind exit so young at 43? Those who observed him from a distance will forever freeze in time the pinnacle moment of White's professional football career: a champion ball-capped, T-shirted White jogging around the perimeter of the Louisiana Superdome and holding high the trophy he and the Green Bay Packers had just earned in Super Bowl XXXI.
While many NFL greats leave an indelible stamp on the field, not as many make their marks as exemplary human beings. Those closest to Reggie clearly saw that distinction. I Remember Reggie White presents the recollections and favorite stories of this dynamic minister and pro football's Minister of Defense as captured in more than two dozen interviews with teammates, friends, coaches, acquaintances, and members of the media. The narrative spans his career from his days at Chattanooga (Tenn.) Howard High School, the University of Tennessee, and the defunct USFL Memphis Showboats through his NFL days with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.
Reggie White left behind a massive legacy. A thirteen-time Pro Bowler and consensus two-time Defensive Player of the Year, he retired as the NFL's all-time sack leader. Selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994, he still holds the Super Bowl single-game sack record.
While football became his burning ambition at a young age, an equally passionate devotion to God and a genuine dedication to ministering resulted in Reggie's ordination as a Baptist minister at age 17. Often controversial for his observations on race and religion, he spent much of his time after retirement from pro football following the 2000 season studying Hebrew and translating the original Old Testament text.
