Book Description

The NBA is in trouble. And as NBA agent Keith Glass describes it–he's part of the problem! If team owners are willing to throw millions of dollars his way for marginal players, why should he be the only one with the self–restraint to say "no?"

In his insightful, funny, and often mind–numbingly bizarre tales of life in the NBA, Keith Glass lets it fly from half–court. He'll tell you how we got to the present state–where an agent who makes millions off the game can't sit through one; why our NBA stars couldn't capture Olympic gold; why one of the greatest high school players he ever saw ended up in Attica prison instead of the NBA; why selfishness has attached itself to the league; and why the game he loves is in dire need of help. With informative chapters such as "How to Feed Your Family on Only $14 Million a Year," "Eighty–one Feet of White Centers," and "From 6'11" to the 7–Eleven," Glass shatters the myth of NBA marketing: that everything about the game is great, that tickets are worth over $100 apiece, and that as long as the fans in the luxury boxes are happy and weighed down with jerseys and merchandise, all is well. But have no fear! Keith Glass will not preach about the evils of highlight film slam–dunks and gangsta rap tattoos–he'll just have you falling down laughing as he flagrantly fouls the league that was once the home of Jordan, Magic, and Bird–not to mention Wilt, Russell, Kareem and all the greats in between.

3 out of 5 stars A Heart-felt Examination of What the NBA Has Become.......2007-10-07

Keith Glass tells a great tale, and his many years of experience representing NBA players has given him many to tell. Glass' book is a great insight into the other side of the NBA that the general public would otherwise have no access to. But one of the greatest elements of this book is Glass' true passion for the sport, and for the part he has played in it.

The book looks at Glass' upbringing, with basketball in his life from a very young age. Glass discusses how Larry Brown ended up living with his family, how Glass saw the evolution of basketball, and how he became a coach at UCLA. There's a very nostalgic and homely feel to these earlier chapters, and they definitely show a man who really loves the game and loves the relationships he has been able to establish through it.

The book then looks at Glass' adventures in representing top level NBA stars and how he came into this career. The greatest stories in here are the tale of Mahamoud Abdul-Rauf, the making of Scott Skiles (current head coach of the Chicago Bulls) and the sad story of Thomas Hamilton. It really is the stories like Hamilton's, a seven-foot-four giant with exquisite skills who could never get his NBA career started due to personal problems, that make this book. The power this story has is it makes you look at how some people can throw their God-given talent away, which gives you perspective to appreciate what you have in your life.

The latter chapters lack the same level of interest, as Glass discusses the various ways he NBA could improve the league and take it back to it's roots more, and further away from the greed-driven monster it has become. Glass makes some great points, but they could have been better illustrated through his stories, rather than telling the reader, point-blank. His various tales deliver this message through subtlety and through reading between the lines of what's going on, so to have this opinion forced onto the reader in the end weakened the overall tone of the writing a bit.

It also plays down some of Glass' other failings, in that he makes little to no mention of his previous marriages and doesn't discuss things he has done that he has regretted. It seems, at times, that Glass is a little too ethical in a world of no ethics, and to survive in this arena, Glass says himself, you can't always hold to your morals. There would appear to be a level of censorship and restraint at times. The book could have had more effect if there were no barriers, no holds barred.

There are also two times that Glass refers to the story of Lloyd Daniels, and says that he would need an entire book of it's own to tell Daniels' story. Lloyd Daniels was shot three times in the late eighties and still, to this day, has a bullet lodged in his right shoulder. He never played in college, yet went on to play for five NBA teams. Now that's a story I want to hear. Daniels' story should have made the book, even in brief form.

At the end of the book you get the sense that this is the story Keith Glass wanted to tell in exactly the way he wanted to tell it, which is not so bad, but it felt like it could have explored so much more about the dark side of the glamourous life of pro-ballers. As it stands, it's an interesting read, great at times, but overall more focussed on presenting a portrait of a man who loves the game and who holds a special place in his heart for 'his' players. Again, this is not so bad, but a but more controversy and a couple more first-hand accounts of back-room dealings would have made this a more important and compulsive book.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2007-09-06

I recently met Keith Glass and his wife at a college graduation party for my niece. His son, Tyler, is dating my niece, and my sister-in-law, knowing that I'm a sports fan, made sure I was introduced to Keith because, as she put it, "You know sports, you'll like him." Well, she was right. After a few minutes I realized that I did, indeed, like him. When the book came up in conversation I told Keith that I would order it from Amazon as soon as I got home, and I'm glad that I did. This was a very entertaining read. OK, it's not going to be used as a textbook in school, and it's got its share of glaring typos (I proof read books as a favor to friends who are authors) but if you're a basketball fan you're going to love this book. Keith is truly an "insider" and gives perspectives that can only be gotten from an insider. His anecdotes are filled with conversations that you would normally not hear anywhere. One, in particular, stands out. Keith used to represent the former Chris Jackson, who subsequently became Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, whom you may recognize as the Denver Nuggets player who refused to stand for the National Anthem after he converted to Islam. Keith's insight into Mahmoud's background and battle with Tourette's Syndrome is very helpful in understanding him. Heck, just imagining a Jewish agent representing a Muslim player is fun.
At then end of the book Keith decides to opine on his "ways to fix basketball" and , while some are dead-on and interesting, I found some to be, in fact, either ideas that we've all bandied about in tavern conversation, or non-implementable. Still, it doesn't detract from the overall "fun-to-read" aspect of the book. I sense a follow-up to this book from Keith and, if so, I'll be sure to get the next one. I've already promised to lend the book out to my son-in-law and a good friend in Massachusetts, so Keith will be losing out on a few book sales. When it does return to me I'm going to see what I can do about getting him to autograph my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Finally someone tells the truth!.......2007-06-09

Keith Glass lays it all out. I hope he writes the unedited version upon his retirement someday. I think he got over the line in some of his disclosure and likely pissed a few NBA-ers off, I really hope there is more he can one day share. Good for him to tell it like it is. Shame on the NBA for allowing the game to reach its current state and shame on us for continuing to pay more and more to go see it. At least now I do so knowing I'm getting ripped off most of the time, instead of just feeling good about the trip.

1 out of 5 stars Where is your ghost writer?.......2007-05-19

There is no ghost writer for this book, and I wonder if there was even an editor. Many paragraphs or individual sentences are poorly constructed, and the book lacks an overall theme or unifed feel. Mr. Glass has led an interesting life and does have some good insights on the NBA, but his inexperience as an writer completely distracted me from enjoying this book.

5 out of 5 stars 87.33 feet of white centers.......2007-05-04

What an enjoyable read! For those many of us who play(ed) and follow sports, this insider's look at professional basketball is both refreshing in its candor and enlightening in its perspective. Without gratuitously attacking the basketball establishment, Keith Glass delivers a direct and honest accounting of the inner workings of the business of basketball through a series of stories and anecdotes that at times had me laughing out loud. I found myself looking forward to each next chapter, to see what players, coaches, management or entourage members would be the subject of scrutiny. I recommend the book to anyone looking for a lighthearted, honest portrayal of professional sports. Oh, as for the title to my review, I was once a 6'4" white center myself, so I decided to include myself in Glass's chapter originally entitled "81 Feet of White Centers"............

Book Description

The movie Jerry Maguire and HBO series Arli$$ barely skimmed the surface. Now the true inside story of the sports agent business is exposed as never before. During baseball's evolution from national pastime to a $3.6 billion business, the game's agents have played a pivotal role in driv-ing and (some might say) ruining the sport. In a world of unchecked egos and minimal regulation, client-stealing and financial inducements have become commonplace, leading many to label the field a cesspool, devoid of loyalties and filled with predators.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book overall.......2007-07-16

This book is not really what the subtitle, "A season on the run with a maverick baseball agent", recommends. It is more of a description of the Sosnick-Cobbe sports agency, Matt Sosnick's biography, Sosnick's business approach, a history of baseball agents, a picture of the cutthroat business, Scott Boras' biography, and a basic how to of the agent business. All this information is randomly spewn about. It is like a picture you look at closely and think that it looks sloppy but when you take a look at the whole thing it is a masterpiece. Read the whole book before you make an opinion.

2 out of 5 stars For Hardcore Fans Only.......2006-01-15

Not the most exciting book out there. But if you like minor league baseball, this book's worth a quick read.

5 out of 5 stars Great topic, mediocre writing = a fascinating book.......2005-10-27

Despite the fact that the book seems quickly written and is organized rather poorly, Jerry Crasnick offers a fascinating study of the sports agent's life. "License to Deal" causes one to root for the up-and-coming agents and against the behemoths, like Scott Boras, that control so many of the top free agents in baseball.

After reading the book, I have a new understanding of the business behind baseball and the battle for new prospects still developing in the farm systems and high schools. In recent months, Sosnick was in the L.A. media surrounding the signing of Luke Hochevar, the Dodgers' top pick this year. Hochevar's negotiations with the Dodgers were strained when he switched from Matt Sosnick's agency to Scott Boras in mid stream. (See the excellent article in "Baseball America" by John Manuel and Kevin Goldstein on September 9, 2005.)

I highly recommend this book for its fascinating portrayal of Matt Sosnick and his agency.

5 out of 5 stars Original and works.......2005-10-25

When looking for good sports books, this is the kind of project that should stop you in your tracks. It is an orginal idea, well-written, and, most importantly, holds the reader's interest throughout the entire package. Well done.

4 out of 5 stars Crasnick Pitches a Gem.......2005-10-14

As some one who is very familiar with the agent business which is at the heart of Mr. Crasnick's book, I appreciate how interstingly and thoughtfully he has explored the topic. By focusing on young agents trying to enter the business he has found a perfect vehicle to let his readers understand the emotions of the business from the elation in landing a new client to the depression of having another , more experienced agent steal his clients. One can sense the commitment made by these young agents to their players as well as their naivete in expecting that such a commitment woujld be sufficient to retain those players as clients. Crasnick also does a nice job in exploring the relationships, both positive and negative, that exist between agents and major league organizations. For one of the first times, an author has focused a non-condescending, literary light on the essence of the agent business, allowing the public to better understand an agent's role both as an influence on the financial aspects of his client's career as well as the development of that career. It's a must read for anyone thinking about entering the business and an enjoyable read for any baseball fan.

2 out of 5 stars Back where I started. Not exactly what I bargained for........2003-10-07

I bought this book as a gift for my brother who was looking for information on finding a new agent in the U.S and abroad, how to approach agents, how to find quality agents, information about affiliations, training/try-out camps etc. Unfortunately this book offers no information in that department. Instead it assumes you are being recruited from a college team, which is of little use to semi-professional athletes, or those who are well out of college.

If you're looking for semi-interesting anecdotes and examples of the business end of sports, check this book out of the libarary and give it a read. If you want specific or practical info to get you started or point you in the right direction this is not the book for you.

Book Description

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. Successful sports agents are comfortable with high finance and intense competition for the right to represent talented players, and the most respected agents are those who can deal with the pressures of high-stakes negotiations in an honest fashion. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too commonplace, and there is growing consensus for reform.

In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports (a point Shropshire and Davis suggest may be essential to rooting out corruption), and stiffening requirements for licensing agents.

Whether an aspiring sports agent, a lawyer, an athlete seeking an agent, or someone simply interested in understanding the world of sports representation, the reader will find in The Business of Sports Agents the most comprehensive overview of the industry as well as a straightforward analysis of its problems and the proposed solutions.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book about American Sports Representation.......2003-10-09

I just wanted to refute the review below. It must be for another book. This book has nothing to do with British sports or soccer. It deals with American sports--basketball, baseball, and football--and discusses both the history and problems of sports representation. As earlier reviews recommend, it is a 'must read' for anyone aspiring to be a sports agent.

2 out of 5 stars Better for Britons.......2003-09-30

This book is interesting, yet focuses primarily on sports business in the UK, and particularly in regard to dealings with soccer clubs. But in terms of applicability to the US market, it's mostly interesting only as a tangential reference.

Book Description

In less than a decade, DC shoes has become an action sports icon. In 1994, Ken Block, Damon Way, and Clay Blehm, the cofounders of DC shoes, revolutionized skateboarding shoes and clothing by incorporating innovative technology and style into their designs.

They ignored industry trends and held true to a vision that changed action sports products and marketing forever. The three built DC shoes one T-shirt -- and eventually two shoes -- at a time from the ground up, creating in the process an international name.

DC's pioneering attitude was sought out and shared by like-minded athletes, and the DC Shoes team was formed. These once-overlooked and misunderstood superstars are among the most talented and driven professionals and amateurs in their fields. In this photographic tribute, DC salutes its team members and their achievements, a new generation of sports with such athletes as: Skateboarding: Danny Way, Colin McKay, Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Stevie Williams, Anthony Van Engelen; BMX: Dave Mirra, Colin Winkelmann; Snowboarding: Todd Richards, Scotty Wittlake; Surfing: Andy and Bruce Irons; Motorcross: Ricky Carmichael, Jeff Emig, Mike Cinqmars.

This is the story of a garage company that initially couldn't even afford a garage. It celebrates the DC athletes who risk life and limb as the ultimate culminationof team talent in the action sports community. It's DC's salute to the passion that drives people to push their personal limits -- in the business, in sports, and in life.

Agents of change is an interesting insight into the world of DC shoes and its athletes! it really shows how ahead of the game the brand has been over the last ten years or so, from ad's to product to team riders DC has been at the forefront and this book details it all. Buy it!!! you wont regret it!

5 out of 5 stars What a quality book!.......2003-11-29

This is (even for a cynical Brit!)a great book/review - if you are into any kind of action sports, then read this. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2003-02-27

Finally someone takes the initiative to tell the story of a company that's corporate, but not really corporate. Not Microsoft or Enron or Nike or any of the Big Money companies but instead a down to earth story about a tiny little 100 million dollar company that has a story that's actually interesting. And if the story itself got boring (it never did) I could still just look at all the great photos. This is an important book for a number of reasons. It documents an era when sports in America are changing. It documents a company that stayed true to those sports. It is inspiring in a way that will show kids to follow their heart, and success will follow. Finally, it isn't a big marketing scam hidden under false pretenses. What you see with AGENTS OF CHANGE is what you get, and what you get is a great book for a book shelf or coffee table; skate park or corporate meeting room of any company who targets the youth demographic.

5 out of 5 stars SB from Rome.......2003-02-22

I was able to pick up Agents of Change and I was blown away by what I saw. Not only are the pictures up-to-date and unbelievable, but the spectrum of sports presented, from skateboarding, to snowboarding, surfing, and motocross, presents a compelling argument as to why this book is relevent at all.

The story of DC shoes, from it's start in a garage with kids with a dream, is as much a part of the world of extreme sports as the athletes who drop from helicopters onto halfpipes or launch themselves off of snow-covered cliffs.

Told in a compelling narrative with interviews, bios, and a history of the company's inception. This book reads like the story of the American dream. Three guys, no money just an idea, and how they turn that idea into a hundred million dollar-a-year company.

This book is not just for people who love extreme sports. It's also for those of us who have dreams of one day changing the world--and making a killing at it.

    Book Description

Negotiating on Behalf of Others offers a framework for understanding the complexity and effects of negotiating on behalf of others and explores how current negotiation theory can be modified to account for negotiation agents. Negotiation agents are broadly defined to include legislators, diplomats, salespersons, sports agents, attorneys, and committee chairs—anyone who represents others in a negotiation. Five major negotiation arenas are examined in depth: labor-management relations, international diplomacy, sports agents, legislative process, and agency law. The book concludes with suggestions for future research and specific advice for practitioners. Chapter authors and commentators are leading figures in the field of negotiation. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is a must read for professional negotiators, graduate students, and scholars in the areas of business, public policy, law, international relations, sports, and economics. Negotiating on Behalf of Others is the result of the first of a series of seminars conducted by the faculty of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard on “complicating factors” in negotiations. The first of these complicating factors selected for study was the effect of the presence of an agent on the negotiating process.
