Very informative. I learned how to stretch the muscle so that the horse was more supple and less likely be to injury in competition and everyday use

4 out of 5 stars An Important Step to Riding Well.......2007-05-10

One of the greatest mistakes riders make is not preparing their horses to rider. They just jump on and go. They don't warm the horses up or stretch them after they have worked to keep muscles supple. Then they wonder why their horses become lame or injured. The stretches suggested in this book are a great way to treat your horse like the athlete he is.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2007-05-02

For whoever said there is nothing new in this book you must be a very proficient and contentiousness horse person. I found this book pack full of goodies. Perhaps there is nothing "new" for you, but for most horse owners it is a fantastic book.

It has clear illustrations of all the stretches and explanations about why you do them. I also find this a good book for taking out to the barn and working through with my horses.

They enjoy the change from being ridden and the exercises also make good warm up and cool downs. They are the basic exercises but you don't really need to learn 999 different exercises. Just do the ones in this book well.

5 out of 5 stars Equine Stretching Routines.......2007-04-12

Learn your horse's anatomy and put your new knowledge to work as you train your horse and develop stretching routines.

ALREADY KNOWN EXERCISES,NOTHING NEW.... ANYWAY A GOOD CONFIRMATION. VERY CLEAR AND EASY TO UNDERSTAND.

5 out of 5 stars Research and experience talks in this book.......2007-10-03

I found myself being the guy doing always the same boring and not always so useful old-school stretching routines. This book had enough science and experience in its background, so it was a thrust-worthy starting point to read. The presentation covers in an understandable way stretching principles, self-evaluation, sport-specific needs and different techniques. And of course, how to customize your own program. As a jumper (high, triple) I have got a lot of new tips in adding flexibility in my problematic areas like low-back and hips. The series of photos are so clear that it is easy to do the routines as they should be done.

4 out of 5 stars A new way of thinking about stretching.......2007-07-21

Over the years it has become a standard mantra that people should "stretch" to help performance and prevent injuries. On the other hand, recent research has cast doubts on the usefulness of "stretching."

This book provides a good resolution to the stretching dilemma. It recasts "stretching" as a series of fluid, wave-like activities for improving mobility opposing the old "stretch and hold" protocol that so many of us have struggled with for years. The movements are performed in synchronization with breathing and at varying tempo for different purposes.

One interesting aspect of this approach is that it takes a big step toward bridging the fluid, rhythmic emphasis of traditional Eastern practices like Tai Chi and Yoga with the Western functional methods.

The biggest weakness of this book from my perspective was that while it emphasizes the importance of sequence, it did not really give enough detailed examples to help me sequence my own flexibility routines, I found myself guessing in various places. The book suggests working from the core outward but does not indicate how to relate each movement to how far it is from the core, and so on. As a result, I have enough information from this book to know how to do the movements and roughly how to structure my stretching, but it leaves me having to do a lot of experimentation on my own.

Still, the approach in this book is heads and shoulders above the previous generation of "stretch and hold" poses, and I highly recommend it for all athletes and martial artists.

5 out of 5 stars Best Stretching Resource I've Encountered.......2007-04-26

This book provides:

1. A systematic approach for identifying your movement restrictions and designing a program to resolve them

2. Clear instruction on effective stretching, with a focus on developing the right combination of mobility and stability

3. Specific guidelines for incorporating soft tissue work with a therapy ball into your exercise program

My personal experience applying just the stretching guidelines has been the following:

1. My hips have opened quite a bit. I can comfortably drop into a deep squat.

2. Foot pain I have had for almost a year is quickly going away

3. A shoulder problem I went to physical therapy for but never quite finished fixing is rapidly improving

I've got the recommended equipment for the trigger point therapy on the way (a $10 Footsie roller and a $15 Fitball). If it does as much for me as the stretching has, I'm going to be a very happy person.

On a professional basis, I've been certified by the ACSM as a Health / Fitness Instructor since 2002. I was certified by ACE as a Personal Trainer in 2000. I've read a number of other stretching books and watched several DVDs. This book is the clearest out of any of them, and is one of the few to recognize being overly flexible is just as bad as not being flexible enough. It's also one of the few to address the concept of promoting soft tissue quality to reduce risk of injury.

Considering the price relative to other fitness products on the market, everyone should own a copy and apply the guidelines. Diligent attention to a sound program of mobility work will have more immediate impact on quality of life and ease of movement than just about any other form of exercise.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for learning about how flexibility works..........1999-09-24

Great book for learning about flexibility, mobility and how your muscles work. It might be technical for many people, but you can always skim over the more difficult parts. It goes into every imaginable aspect of flexibility and flexibility training - what we know, what we *don't* know (yet) methods from yoga to dynamic stretches, tons of references, comparison of ideas, apllication to sport - wow. It compliments his other ( more to the point) practical book, which is "Sports Stretch". Either of both books are a must for anyone interested in the technical aspects of flexibility as well as sports training. Everytime I look into this book, I learn something new.

4 out of 5 stars Flexibility prevents injuries.......2006-09-07

I like the way the author set up the book with a clear introduction of the anatomy and mechanics of stretching. In addition, the use of charts for "sport specific" stretching guidelines is extremely useful. Illustration are clear and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2006-05-18

I am a certified personal trainer, athlete, medical massage practitioner and I teach anatomy/physiology, so I review this book with some authority.

The opening chapters explain quite nicely the scientific rationale for, and benefits of, stretching for those who prefer to have a technical basis for what they do. You'll find great variety here and many unique stretches I've not seen in similar books.

To address some of the negative reviews:
Nowhere does the author recommend performing dangerous stretches or techniques beyond the abilities of the reader. Some advanced stretches are presented for informational purposes but with the caveat that these are for VERY specific applications and should be attempted ONLY if you do not have contraindicated conditions. To quote the book: "There is generally no such thing as an unsafe stretch or exercise: only an unsafe way of executing any movement for a specific individual at a specific time". In other words, everyone is different and the reader should use good judgment in their choices. Some people will take very "safe" stretches and get injured by using sloppy form or not training within their abilities while others can perform "dangerous" stretches very safely by proceeding slowly, deliberately and realistically training within their own physical limitations.

Some reviewers purport that 2 or 3 stretches are all that you need and the author is fooling you with many "goofy" stretches. Ridiculous! Can a carpenter build a house with only a hammer and level? NO! If two good stretches were all you needed for each muscle, then the book would simply be entitled, "Two Stretches That Work For Every Person and Sport". Personally, I like that the author has provided a huge amount of variety. That way, I can try any number of the 311 stretches taught and find the 3 or 4 that work best for me for each muscle group. As my needs change, then I can go back to the book and try something different. I would rather have too much information than not enough. If some readers are annoyed by the variety there are plenty of very basic, boring stretch books out there to fill their needs. Also, if you read and understand the opening chapters, you'll know how to adapt any of the stretches to active, dynamic, PNF or vice versa. The book will not limit your advancement as some reviewers mistakenly believe.

I highly recommend this book. It's clear, concise and presents many options, from basic to advanced, for you to build a good stretching program.

4 out of 5 stars Jam Packed with Stretches for Every Muscle Group.......2005-07-30

I'm a former couch potato who started doing Tae Bo and cardio kickboxing almost two years ago. I recently added yoga to my routine for flexibility, and pilates for strength and control, but found that I needed more. In particular, I wanted greater flexibility in my adductor muscles so that I could kick higher and with increased control. I found that I was also having some knee problems. So I checked out every book that my local library had on stretching and flexibility; out of the dozen or so books I looked at, I liked three of them, including "Sport Stretch," well enough that I purchased my own copies.

"Sport Stretch" begins with a discussion of flexibility, then launches into descriptions of 311 different stretches. Most of these consist of a single illustration with a few bulleted instructions. The stretches themselves are arranged into chapters based on muscle groups, including feet and ankles, lower legs, hamstrings, adductors, quadriceps, hips and gluteals, lower torso, upper back, neck, pectorals, shoulders, and arms and wrists.

Additionally, the author includes an index at the beginning of the book that singles out stretches that are helpful for specific sports. One- to three-page sections are dedicated to each of the following: archery; baseball, softball, and cricket; basketball; bowling; cross-country skiing; cycling and triathlon; dance; diving; figure skating; football; golf; gymnastics; hiking and backpacking; ice hockey; in-line skating; jogging; lacrosse; martial arts; race walking; rowing, kayacking, and canoeing; sailing and windsurfing; skiing; soccer; squash; swimming; table tennis; tennis, racquetball, and handball; track and field; volleyball; water skiing; weight lifting; and wrestling.

As a BEGINNER, I found most of the stretches helpful. There were some standard moves that I was already familiar with from my high school gym classes, as well as some more challenging exercises I learned in yoga. However, a number of the stretches were completely new to me. I'm especially happy with the adductor section, as it's exactly what I needed to help with my roundhouse kicks! Note the emphasis on "beginner," though - because I'm such a novice, I really can't say whether more advanced athletes will find "Sports Stretch" useful or not.

As much as I like the book, I do have a few complaints. Most of the stretches, with few exceptions, only have a single illustration. Given the minimalist instructions, many of the moves could have used at least one extra picture. Also, once I eased into certain stretches, I found it difficult to gracefully get OUT of them. It seems to me as though the author should have included "exit strategies" for some of a stretches, particularly the more advanced ones! Finally, a few stretches come with the following caveat: "This exercise may be too advanced or dangerous for even some elite athletes." Now, I would think that "elite" or even "professional" athletes have trainers, and wouldn't need to rely on a book for stretching advice - so I really don't see why the author included these seemingly dangerous stretches. Unless he's asking for a lawsuit! ;)

Otherwise, a great buy, at least for beginner-to-moderate athletes.

- Kelly Garbato

1 out of 5 stars not to comprehensive.......2003-11-11

Although this book may have some good overall general stretches in it it does not cover all the methods of stretching, or any routines for the athlete to build apon. Although passive stretching is good for your flexability maintanence if you dont incorperate isometric and combining it (PNF), you will never achieve the greatest rang of flexability as a top athlete. I have been studying the martial arts for 19 years now and I am always looking for good material for stretching to recomend to my students of friends. I can say I would never recomend this book to another living soul involved in any demanding sport.

5 out of 5 stars Gymnastics.......2003-08-19

I was very pleased with this book. As I read the other reviews, there unhappiness with the book comes from the fact that it is not for every day people. I am very pleased with that fact and the title does imply that it is for people involved in sports. I am a mother of a 7 year old gymnast and I have been very challenged to find a book on stretching that will enhance her flexibility at an advanced stage. I am working with her coaches to ensure safety and develop a schedule that will make her a better gymnast. I was very pleased with the variety of stretches, pictures and descriptions for the stretches.

Book Description

Detailed illustrations lend a humorous touch to this lift-the-flap search for a wily dachshund, led by a playful pair of twins while their parents are left with the brunt of the backyard chores.

It's time to do some yard work, but the twins would much rather play "Find the Dachshund" with Stretch, who's exceedingly good at the game. "Peekaboo, Stretch! I see your tail." Or not, as the case might be! Flip the flap and you'll see that it's really a length of hose poking under the gate. Could that be a paw underneath the tablecloth? A nose behind the shed door? A floppy ear in the wagon? Where, oh where could that clever dog be?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Cute.......2007-08-11

We love dachshunds in this family. This is a very cute book and the grandchildren love it. They love finding the dachsie in each picture.

5 out of 5 stars Read it again, please!.......2005-03-08

My daughter loved this book from the moment she opened it. Now almost two, she's had the book for a couple of months and still wants to read it over and over. She especially enjoys finding the hidden stretch in each picture (Hint: check the laundry for body parts sticking out). We have to read it before bed every night now, and sometimes before her nap.
The flaps seem quite sturdy, and show no sign yet of pulling off. The art seems a little dated (retro forties?), and this adds extremely well to the charm of the story.
If your child likes lift-a-flap books, this is a good one to add to your library. If you're not sure, this is a good one to try: dogs and hidden objects-what more could a child want?

5 out of 5 stars From SherriAllen.com.......2004-10-10

Children love lift-the-flap books. Children love dogs. Author Karen Pandell and Illustrator Jill McElmurry successfully combine the two in "Where's Stretch?" a charming book that young readers will adore.

The family of Stretch, the dog, is getting ready for laundry day when they decide to give Stretch a bath. Of course, Stretch makes himself scarce and the search for Stretch begins. Is he in the closet? No. Is he in the bathtub? No. Where can that dog be? Your children will delight in the search for Stretch and will love the surprise at the end when Stretch's hiding place is revealed.

The text is effectively presented as family dialogue, bringing the reader into the search for Stretch and eliminating a lot of unnecessary words that would detract from the story and make things harder for the beginning reader. The story was so compelling and easy to follow, my 2-and-a-half year old memorized the book after having it only half a day. A few months later, after the newness has worn off, it is still one of her favorite books.

McElmurry's illustrations show the family searching for Stretch as they get ready for their day. The pictures, which fill the pages with scenes from Stretch's family's home, invite the reader in to participate in finding Stretch.

I highly recommend "Where's Stretch?" Your children will want to read it again and again; so will you. You will enjoy seeing your children's delight with each lift of a flap and the story is short and sweet so it won't drive you crazy the 150th time you read it.

This is a VERY COMPACT yoga book. I was actually surprised to see how small it is. The idea of doing yoga in your tent is a wonderful concept for us enthusiasts, however I'm not so sure the poses would would work on top of an air mattress, which I use in the tent.

This is a fabulous book! Great for those with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS/CFS) or possibly others who have cognitive disabilities. Very simple to use. Straight-forward, list-driven instructions on one page; great photo of the pose on the page facing the instructions. Really easy to use - which is great for those who get overwhelmed by too many words! 'nuff said! ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for girls ... and their moms!.......2005-04-13

I LOVE this book! The language is spot-on for girls--there's no "dumbing down" here, yet the core teachings of yoga aren't glossed over either. The package is tons of fun, with amazing, colourful illustrations of real girls and easy-to-follow instructions for each yoga pose. I highly recommend it--especially for girls who might want to begin a yoga practice but aren't sure they want to take a class with a "bunch of women."

If you're a mom with a preteen / teenage daughter, it's a great way to learn about yoga together.

1 out of 5 stars Stretches the limits of value - that's all.......2007-05-07

Simplistic little brochure that is not worth the cost. Most of the simple and intuitive stretches are already available on line and in numerous free publications. The graphic/pictures are very basic and not that illustrative. Don't buy this. It is a waste of money. Excuse me...maybe at $1.50 it would be useful.

1 out of 5 stars Are You Kidding?.......2006-10-07

How much gall does it take to charge $15.00 for 18 tiny pages? I feel so used....

5 out of 5 stars Nicely Done.......2005-12-04

After investing a lot of money on clubs, balls, lessons, etc.. I thought I might invest in myself a bit. This book has actually helped me improve my game and increased my distance! While my buddies are teeing off I'm doing some of the stretches and I feel so much looser and relaxed it's really helped my swing. All the stretches are well described, well illustrated, and easy to do, plus I'm not sore after the round either. Now I have my buddies wondering what that little book in my golf bag is and why I'm hitting the ball past them.

5 out of 5 stars Easier golf ahead!.......2005-10-11

Using this guide as part of my pre golf warm up has greatly improved both my performance and enjoyment of the game of golf. I feel more relaxed and more mobile during my round, and I feel less stiff and sore after eigtheen holes. I would highly recommend this guide for anyone who is looking to improve their game through better fitness.
