Book Description

Dear Stupid Idiots,

A lot of you have been saying that I don't know anything about REAL ninjas. But that's a bunch of bull crap! You dummies don't know anything. And maybe YOU should get a life. I bet a lot of you have never even seen a girl naked! You idiots believe that ninjas had some "code of honor." Yeah right! If by "code of honor," you mean "code to flip out and go nuts for absolutely no reason at all even if it means that people might think you are totally insane or sweet," then you are right. But if you mean a "code to be nice and speak nicely while sharing and not cutting off heads," then you're the biggest idiot ever!!!!!! So if you have any brains, you will shut up and get a life. So go shut up, you stupid idiot.

No thank you,

Robert Hamburger

2 out of 5 stars funny at first.......2007-10-02

at first it started pretty funny... ninjas are cool...yada yada yada... and i admit i like silly humor. then chapter 4 comes around, and theres nothing witty...its basically the same joke repeated over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-09-25

Warning: This book has nothing to do with real ninjas.

If you can't take a joke, this book ain't for you. If your a woman, this might be for you but might find some things offensive. This book has absolutely nothing to with ninjas but it is hilarious. It is a book that feels like it has been written by a 13 year old boy with his babysitter as his editor. Just by looking at the name, Robert Hamburger, and the fake reviews, this book is one of the best toilet readers I've had since "The Alphabet of Manliness"

5 out of 5 stars Down the middle.......2007-07-19

You are either going to LOVE this book or HATE this book. If you go to his website and look at that for a little bit, that will tell you whether or not you will love or hate this book.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2007-06-25

There were funny parts to the book, but they were all on the website, too. Save your money, go to the website, and see the good parts. The rest of the book is just boring.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2007-06-09

Don't get me wrong. It's funny. However, if you've seen the web site, the book offers little that is new, and it gets old fast. This might be a good book to have as a conversation piece, or in the bathroom, but let's face it, people will probably think less of you if you own it.

Book Description

Looking back almost 1,000 years, the mists of Japan's chaotic past shroud the development of a way of life, an ancient struggle waged against fierce feudal lords who ruled the island nation with swords of steel and a code of death before dishonor. The people of the mountainous regions of what is now Iga prefecture wanted to live in peace, but their lords had other plans-so the people learned the martial arts of self-defense and used their meager farm tools as weapons against the samurai blades of their oppressors. Nine traditions of the ninja arts grew out of this seemingly endless struggle, and legends were told of the supernatural abilities of the ninja fighters. The ninja never gained the kind of power that topples tyrants, but they gained a reputation that made tyrants cautious. And they gained the kind of power that makes the spirit endure and the mind the master of its fate. Told in actual stories of past grandmasters and in dojo lectures on techniques-with photographs, drawings, and paintings-the last surviving grandmaster of the ancient art of ninjutsu, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, presents Essence of Ninjutsu: The Nine Traditions. In it, he explains why, after more than 900 years, the art of the shadow warriors continues to inspire and serve practitioners from around the world. Dr. Hatsumi's book contains historic ninja scrolls and describes techniques for self-defense, and it debunks tricks that are attributed to the ninja but actually derive more from the circus than the martial arts. Essence of Ninjutsu is a fascinating, authoritative look at the roots of ninjutsu and how it continues to enrich the lives of its practitioners today. Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi is a bone doctor, artist, and writer, as well as the 34th grandmaster of the nine schools of the ninja arts in Japan. He has toured the United States in recent years to help Americans better understand the ninja and their way of life. His articles have appeared in all of the major martial arts magazines.

3 out of 5 stars never really gets to the heart of the matter........2006-06-26

As someone interested in japanese history and culture, rather than in learning martial arts. From previous comments and the authors pedigree, I figured that this book provide me more illumination on the historical ninja. Unfortunately, by the end of the book I still didn't feel that I had a very good grasp of who the ninja were and where they fit into japanese society. One problem with the book is that Masaaki Hasumi's writing tends to jump around quite a bit (perhaps better translationa and editing would have helped).
On the bright side, there are quite a few hidden pearls of wisdom hidden within the text, that I found interesting and useful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of interesting background information........2006-02-27

As a relative newcomer tot Ninjutsu I wanted te read more about the history of Ninjutsu and its roots in Japanese feudal society.
I found this quitte suffeciently in Essence of Ninjutsu. It has a lot of illustrative stories and historical context. A must read for the avid nunjutsu practicioner !

5 out of 5 stars An exceptional view of Ninjutsu.......2006-02-14

Massaki Hatsumi gives an exceptional view of Ninjutsu that is practically unparelled to the rest. One such interesting notion is that ninjas are not cold-blooded murderers. Hatsumi states that hundreds of years ago Togakure ninjas avoided killing anyone in the enemy's camp and only did it when there was no other choice. This I would say is a perfect example of the difference between a ninja and an assassin.

Another interesting thing about this book was the many insightful stories Hatsumi tells. The story that I enjoyed the most was the one with the egotistical warrior who's head was too hard to hit. If you think about it, this story alone expresses the true essence of Ninjutsu.

If you're into ninjas or the martial arts, and wondering what Ninjutsu is really about, I whole-heartedly recommend this book by Massaki Hatsumi. It helped me realize and understand so much about Ninjutsu that before I read this book I was only living in a child's fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Basis for Ninpo Today..........2003-02-13

Narrated by Masaaki Hatsumi, 34th generation lineage holder of the Togakure school of ninpo (and holder of 8 other traditional Japanese martial lineages, at least 6 of which have been verified), This book is the closest thing Hatsumi sensei has written to an autobiography. Hatsumi introduces us to his teacher, Takamatsu Sensei. Chapter 2 includes an interview with Takamatsu sensei conducted by Hatsumi, and throughout he discusses his experiences training with his teacher, his love for his teacher, and how he came to understand the ideas Takamatsu imparted to him.

Numerous learning incidents are recounted by Hatsumi, both while training, and also while simply spending time with his teacher. Each chapter includes a traditional story which imparts something of the spirit of ninpo to the reader. Hatsumi Sensei's writings are rife with anecdotes, recollections, historical observations, and cautiously thought out conclusions. Most touching I found to be his visit to Takamatsu Sensei's tomb accompanied by the Sensei's daughter, and the thought she shared with him (page 68).

For those looking for an introduction to ninjutsu, I'd recommend Masaaki Hatsumi's other book, "Ninjutsu: History and Traditions". For the reader prepared to go beyond learning about ninja weapons and general history, this volume "Essence of Ninjutsu: The Nine Traditions" offers a look at the heart of a kindly man and a profound art.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-07-08

This book is superior to many of its contemporaries on the subject of ninpo. Many areas are covered, most of which is devoted to the life and adventures of Takamatsu Sensei. The reader learns of his youth, training in the old budo tradition of the Shinden Fudo school, later learning the secrets of ninjutsu and traveling to China to further his studies. There are excellent B/W photos of woodblock prints, as well as several pages devoted to Gyokko style mutodori kata. This is a must-have for any practicioner of ninpo or koryu bujutsu.

Book Description

In feudal Japan, ninja warriors were credited with supernatural powers of invisibility and ways of learning any secret. They also were feared for their skill in espionage and assassination. Behind these legends is the reality of an ancient, sophisticated, highly systematic martial art: ninjutsu. Perhaps the least understood martial art of Japan, ninjutsu emphasizes naturalness of movement, responsiveness to one's adversary, and total practicality. Women as well as men were trained in this obscure deadly art. As its form crystallized, practitioners established an organized system for maintaining absolute secrecy. Now, all aspects of ninjutsu are revealed in this remarkable book written by the first American trained as a ninja.

5 out of 5 stars Hayes own Experience and Introduction to Ninpo as an Art.......2006-05-02

This was the first book on ninpo I read as a youth. Thankfully, I believe it did a lot to innoculate me against much of the...other stuff out there claiming to be "ninjutsu". Author Stephen K. Hayes actually was proficient in Karate (3rd dan), running a dojo in Atlanta, Georgia before hanging up everything and flying off to Japan to find Masaaki Hatsumi, a Ninja historian and one of the few holders of a legitimate titles of proficiency in traditional Japanese martial arts associated with the ninja of Old Japan.

In Noda City, Hayes meets Master Teacher Hatsumi, and the two discuss martial arts. At one point Hayes is discussing the intricacies of a particular kata (form), when Hatsumi shows an exact imitation of it. For the first time Hayes is struck by the stiffness of the movements.

During their initial meeting, in a discussion concerning the varied physical aspects of Taijutsu in Ninpo, Hatsumi describes making use of striking as well as locking techniques, when Hayes interjects, "Like karate and Judo combined". Hayes ruminates on how his original assumptions probably appeared to Hatsumi a lot like "...comparing ninjutsu to wine tasting and insect collecting" (page 40). What sets this book apart from others is the personal tone, the recounting of actual experiences and situations Hayes encountered. He does his darndest to paint a true picture and keep grandstanding and ego out of the picture.

This is not an repetitive pedantic self help book (thankfully!). Hayes telling of his various encounters in ninjutsu training, with the Grandmaster and other teachers and students in Japan, and Japanese culture--new and old, are the best teaching tools.

Hayes went on to return to the United States and pioneer the legitimate teaching of Ninjutsu. Whether you practice martial arts or not, this book is an eye opening experience, a real education.

5 out of 5 stars Great history, philosophy, stories and photos........2005-11-19

This is one of the first books that I read about ninjutsu back in the day as a teenager and it still is fun to pull off the shelf and skip around. It recounts Hayes's first encounter with Hatsumi, his finding himself being one of the few non-Japanese to study the art before the big ninja boom of the 80s when everything got so stupid in the public's eye, the brutality of early training under Hatsumi, some recollections of unconventional training and a few demonstrations of techniques. There are also many great photos from the old school, which you may find as interesting as I do.

I would highly recommend Hatsumi's "Secrets form the Grandmaster" recently re-issued, "Essence of Ninjutsu", as well as a highly illustrated, if also slightly inaccurate text by Lewis on the subject entitled "Ninja".

Below you will read many reviews that tear the book up for not being clear, not teaching enough, etc. Fine. But how much can a person learn about movement from a book unless they already know how to move? Same goes for fighting. So dismiss those reviews as not understanding the point of the text. Then of course there is the person who suggests the Ashida Kim books are the real deal and that the techniques of Hatsumi and Hayes are "too weak". Well, anyone can do bad Japanese karate in a black uniform with a mask while holding exotic weapons and call it ninjutsu, but that is not the case with the legitimate instruction of the Bujinkan. If soft equals weak, then that's enough said. But for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, the truth is evident. Moreover, I would suspect that those who have ever trained with Hayes or Hatsumi in person would not say such things, at least the pain in their body would tell them they are lying!

5 out of 5 stars Full perspective on Ninja.......2003-12-23

With sensitivity, Hayes gives readers a clear
explanation of Ninja history, society, weaponry,
and spiritual practice. I appreciated his detailed
explanation of the mental training of ninjutsu.
Highly recommended.

"Do not expect easy answers or simple solutions here on these pages. . . but then "that is the fun, the excitement, the joy of involvement in the warrior arts of accomplishment. . . . It pleases me no end to see the world at large now welcoming the knowledge of ninjutsu's ages in the form of these books by the art's grandmaster ." -- From the Foreword by Stephen K. Hayes In an uninhibited dialogue from a recent meeting with his top instructors from around the world, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi discusses his personal journey through the mysteries of the ancient art of the phantom warrior. His topics cover the nutritional needs of a ninja, the changing physical attributes of the "new" ninja, details on training for the novice as well as the advanced student, and the spiritual aspects of ninja training and how it applies to the modern world. With numerous photos, Dr. Hatsumi demonstrates the extemporaneous techniques that flow from his form of training and how some of his top students have developed their own styles of ninjutsu. Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi, the grandmaster of the nine ninjutsu schools that comprise the ninja tradition, is an artist with brush and ink, a medical practitioner of seikotsu, and a prolific writer .

5 out of 5 stars Small Book, Big Lessons.......2007-04-28

Sometimes, the best books to learn from are books of interviews with a master of some particular thing. This book is no exception and packs a lot of good info in a very few pages.

The questions and answers that go back and forth between students and teacher reveal much and hint at even more.

I return to this book every year or so and seem to find more in it at every read! (Always a good sign.)

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Dr. Hatsumi says (paraphrasing from memory...) that no matter how strong a student becomes he must remember that nowadays anyone can be killed with a gun. A warrior who does not understand his own weakness ultimate faces doom more from himself than from others.

Definitely worth reading multiple times.

5 out of 5 stars Starting out.......2006-12-05

This is the first book I ever read on the subject of Budo. It got me hooked. It's well written, playful and gives an interesting view of some of the first western students of Hatsumi-Sensei. You get a good down to earth connected feel when you finish the book. I did and it's kept me in gambatte mode through 10 years of training. I've lent this book out a lots had to buy new copies. It's well worth it.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A good documented conversation.......2006-11-10

I recently obtained a copy of this book since for a time it was only available in the early 90's through the Bujinkan Dojo. I have been a ninjutsu practitioner since the late 80's and after finally reading this I can say it is a very good look into what it is like to sit with Hatsumi and feel his verson of what true ninjutsu and ninpo is about. I recomend it to anyone serious at persuing the art.

1 out of 5 stars The devil went down to...Okinawa?.......2005-12-15

I had no idea that Charlie Daniels was a ninja. But, apparently he is. He sits in on this diatribe with the good "doctor." Doctor of what, they don't tell you. But, if "Dr." is good enough for the legendary fiddle player, it's good enough for me. Sign me up.

4 out of 5 stars Wisdom and practice..........2005-12-08

Everyone seeking wisdom in the art of Ninjutsu,i really reccomend this book since the Soke himself answers to many interesting questions. Everyone seeking to learn Ninjutsu through a book should instead train for real.

Book Description

This book offers self-defense enthusiasts a comprehensive guide to the mysterious and ancient art of the ninja, written by the Western world's foremost authority, Stephen Hayes. Profusely illustrated with more than 580 action photographs and diagrams, this book clearly shows the correct body positions and movements for mastering the ninja method. Techniques such as hitting the ground and rebounding safely, shifting and evading strikes and weapon hits, and applying natural body weapons and handheld tools for combat are covered in detail. The book's physical conditioning program includes training exercises for increasing flexibility and building muscle strength, followed by footwork drills, reaction drills, counter techniques, and combat skills. Of equal importance to this ancient art is the spiritual training. Stephen Hayes provides all movement and meditation tech- niques essential to the ninja combat method. Stephen K. Hayes is the only American ever awarded the title of shidoshi ("teacher" in Japanese) and full teaching credentials in the art of ninjutsu. He has written eight books and numerous articles for Black Belt, Kick, Official Karate, and Ninja. He operates his own dojo ("school") of ninjutsu and spends his time between trips to the Far East, as a teacher, lecturer, and writer. He is the author of Wisdom from the Ninja Village of the Cold Moon and The Mystic Arts of the Ninja (both Contemporary Books).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-04-24

This is one of the better books I've bought and read on the art of the ninja and I recommend it to anyone. The basic training drills will help any new student of the art progress. While I somewhat agree with some people that learning from a book is not the best way to learn any martial art, I believe with the right intention anyone can gain good knowledge and even master some techniques through this book and others by this author.

5 out of 5 stars yeah it was good.......2005-09-11

this shows some basic moves of taijitsu but thats pretty much all no advanced moves then again sometimes basics are quick and effective oh and uhhh gobli are you retarded

1 out of 5 stars Eh.........2003-09-24

This book has some good notes on condiitioning. The rest is just a poor attempt at trying to teach you how to fight. You can't lean that from a book, esspecially from this "Taijutsu" fighitng system their promoting. Don't buy it, get a Bruce Lee book to make up for the fitness tips your missing.

4 out of 5 stars Ninjutsu: The Art of the invisible warrior.......2001-08-02

This book is a wonderfully helpful guide to some very basic Ninjutsu techniques. It covers mostly basic self-defense, however there are some rather dire moves that you would only use if someone were about to try to kill you. Not sounding too basic now, is it? I loved the Taijutsu section and the historical references. I didn't like the weapons section very much; I think they missed something in refusing to put in the Katana swords and Shuko climbing claws. For these (particularly the Katana) I recommend Mr. Hayes' other book, The Mystic Arts of the Ninja.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner ninjutsu practitioners!!!.......2001-07-23

This was the first book I got on ninjutsu when I started studying it 3 years ago. If you are interested or training in ninjutsu this is a must read book! It will first teach you the junan-taiso, which is the conditioning and stretching. Then it will teach you basic taijutsu, which is the unarmed combat of the ninja. It also shows you the kamaes, which are the postures of taijutsu. It is a great book that will show you how to use taijutsu one on one, with great step by step instructions and photos. Also you will get into basic jo-staff, tanto, and sword grips. So if your starting out or interested you HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK it is probably one of the best and is the easiest to follow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those with experience!.......2007-05-13

Lots of info here in this book. Well worth the price and in my opinion better info the Togakure stuff. Mainly because it is so down to earth. Covers a lot of areas of training. Many charts and photos as well. But a warning to those who buy this book, it was written as a guide for Sensei Dallas students so if you have "not" trained in this system or have prior martial training , the info may be hard to decipher. But it is well recommended to anyone interested in a very unique style of ninjutsu.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2007-01-09

First of all, putting aside the questionable history of this art (any quick search of the internet will uncover horror stories), this book costs a lot, but returns so little. The martial techniques demonstrated are sometimes laughable (come on, spinning a staff above your head will make you float in the air like a helicopter?? What kind of moron would actually believe this?) Even though the author apparently spent a lot of time photographing techniques, it appears that the book was an after thought. The printed copy still contains hypertext links within ("click here to watch video" in a book?!?!?). The Japanese translations are laughable. However the best (or worst part) would be the survival techniques. They are not just pitiful, but incredibly dangerous for anyone to even think of attempting.
The illustrations are abysmal. You would expect that for the price of this book, the author would have gotten a professional illustrator... or even a person who can draw past the stage of stick figures.
On a good note, the author appears to have put in a lot of time. Mostly in photographing the techniques. It is about the best thing that I can say about the book.
The bottom line, there are better books on the martial arts in general, and ninjutsu in particular than this. You would best be served by looking else where.

5 out of 5 stars The best Martial Arts Book.......2006-07-21

This edition of the konigun manual is by far the best. The techniques are practical and detailed. The pictures as well as the step by step discription of each move make it easier to practice the move. I would also recommend the cd-rom manual which enhances the printed copy by allowing you to view how the techniques are preformed in real time. These two items will help prepare anyone interested in defending themselves and dealing with the inevidable challenges life will throw at them.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Own........2006-07-21

This is by far the most in depth book on any Martial Art that I have ever come across in my life. Dr. Dallas is a genius, The proof is in his book and it not only shows techniques but also breaks down on how they are used. No other M.A. book comes even close to the material that he has put in to this book. Not to mention the book also has Pictures to go along with the techniques as well. So if there's any other Book out there that can top this one on not only History, the Math and the Science the please step up and prove it.

5 out of 5 stars best training manuel ive ever read.......2006-07-21

This manuel is the most comprehensive break down of techniques I've ever seen. Would most definitly like to study under the gentleman that wrote it. I believe it would enhance the knowledge i already have and add to it. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in studying martial arts.
