Book Description
This well-illustrated book allows anyone with common sense, a clean kitchen, and a closet shelf to grow bumper crops of mushrooms. Besides step-by-step guides to cultivating four species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, the book offers a wealth of additional information, including an introduction to mushroom biology, a resource guide for supplies, advice on discreetly integrating psychedelic mushrooms into outdoor gardens, and insights into the traditional use of psilocybins in sacred medicine. Also included are appendices with a summary of all included recipes.

Excellent--but intimidating........2007-01-04
I really like this book, but I had to give it four stars because of its subtitle: "Easy Indoor & Outdoor Cultivation". The term "easy" is a little misleading. This book is a truly thorough work. In addition to the several chapters on cultivation methods and technique, the Mushroom Handbook contains a chapter devoted to the history of psilocybin mushrooms as well as chapters tackling biology and chemistry. You get a pretty hefty load of mushroom fun & facts for only two hundred pages.
I forsee a potential disappointment for those who purchase this book hoping to learn a simple approach to growing mushrooms. The instructions contained in this handbook are detailed, exacting and require the grower to purchase a long list of materials. I have to admit--I have NOT tried any of the techniques offered in this book. There are easier ways to grow mushrooms that require less time and expense. That being said, I think that the background knowledge and experience of the authors make this little number well worth the buy. It works as an excellent reference book, full of great tips to anyone willing to commit to the reading. The authors demonstrate sincere passion and expertise, and they aren't offering any shortcuts.
Keep up-to-date with the most successful techniques for mushroom growing at home.......2006-07-12
Mushroom cultivation techniques are improving fast, especially with the advent of Internet discussion boards where new techniques are being discovered every day.
This book is very recent (as of 2006), and is the clearest and most easy to read book I have seen on the subject. It gives a clear and concise summary of many of the best techniques for growing the most popular type of hobby mushrooms, and discusses where to go to learn more about mushrooms of all types.
Compared to doing research directly from the Internet, this book is clearly organized, well written and authoritative. But perhaps the most valuable resource in this book is its list of reputable web sites and forums on the Internet, which helps you avoid the unreputable sites. Scams on the Internet are abundant, and anyone new to this hobby needs to be careful to find trustworthy sources for discussion and for purchasing equipment and culture spores to experiment with. There are many sites that will make big claims and then not deliver, leaving many beginners frustrated and much poorer with nothing to show.
The importance of finding clear and reputable sources of information and supplies cannot be understated. This book will help you get started safely and quickly. Buy it, read it, then go to the forums listed and compare what you have learned with what other people have already been through. Use this knowledge to avoid the common scams and pitfalls. Follow this plan and you will be happy.
Excellent. Begin here........2006-06-13
An update on simple accessible grow techniques is long overdue. This is book is perfect for newbies. I recommend supplementing this book with other available information on the web, just to get a thorough scope of what's ahead of you, and what came before the improvements the authors present in the book. There's a surprisingly well written and researched Wiki page on psilocybin for those of you who are curious about its history and chemistry. Excellent color section, resource list and appendix.
Very easy to use handbook!.......2006-05-25
This book is great. I read it and it is very easy to follow. I knew nothing about growing mushrooms but this book made it easy to do. I love the photography that shows each step. It is well worth the buy. It showed me what supplies I needed and where to store them. I recomend this book to all.
This book IS in print, and it is excellent!.......2006-04-24
This is the most thorough book on this subject to be published, containing NUMEROUS methods for growing the mushrooms, a detailed list of materials needed, a glossary, background information, and 32 pages of color photos.

Very outdated method........2007-03-08
Good book but it's outdated. This book uses a method that nobody uses anymore. Google for "the PF tek" to learn the easiest way to grow mushrooms with good yield and for cheap using readily available materials like brown rice, distilled water and jars, without the need for a pressure cooker.
There are better methods like spawning to horse manure, casing with Miracle Grow Moisture Control and so forth. You can find more info on The Shroomery (google it) forums.
well for begin.......2005-08-23
it's a good book for people who want to know the simplest method for growing the mushrooms. it's only dedicate to Stropharia cubensis.
Excellent mycelogical information in the field of growing.......2003-09-05
This is the most authoritave, reliable, and safe technique available today, not to mention the economical feasibility. Wether your a scholar studying the pharmacological and cross-culture use of hallucinogens, or a 18 year old, this book explains the process of growing mycelium with potent psilocybin in easy to follow steps with descriptive pictures. The toxicity of psilocybin, the main alkaloid in the psychedelic mushroom also known as Stropharia Cubensis (this books goes by that strain) is 200, that is L.D. 200 in other words, 200 times the effective dose approaches toxicity, So in other words, in pharmacological terms, these substances are harmless, since you cant even ingest that much. This book does state that in fairly technical terms, in a section separate from the main. Mushroom use in ancient civilizations has been in use for thousands of years, the knowledge, unparalleled in the sense of human understanding upon subjects which otherwise with go without. What psychedelics ultimately do is they dissolve boundaries, and in the presence of dissolved boundaries, one cannot continue to close ones eyes to the ruination of the earth, positing of the seas, and 2000 years of unchallenged dominator culture, based on monotheism, hatred of nature, suppression of the female, so forth and so on. You have a godlike understanding to learn and assimilate new information, the kind of experience you have when looking over a landscape from the air, when previously only viewed from the ground. This book while eloquently outlining this in the introduction primarily focuses on growing the mycelium, in which it does flawlessly. In the process of growing mycelium, you have to have very sterile conditions, and this book stresses contamination, while other books don't emphasize that, which I find a problem. While this book gives you a list of tools, which are easily bought in any town or on the internet for a reasonable low price (Excluding the pressure cooker) it also gives you a sense of understanding for the process as a whole, which gives this process specifically a tint of art, because it is, in and of itself an art. It would be recommended to have at least a college level of English, and college level chemistry wouldn't hurt as well. These substances can show you what has never been seen before, and never will be seen by any human ever again. Our culture is in a ridiculous position in relation with these substances, and in reading this book one becomes more familiar to the properties and uses, preparation and dosage alike, so one doesn't have a culturally sanctioned basises toward something which he/she had no prior knowledge. This book, written by Terence & Dennis McKenna, however written under the name Oss and Oeric, are the foremost spokesperson's for the psychedelic experience, among other things, and are literary geniuses (in the purest definition) whose knowledge is unparalleled as well. If your interested more on the fascinating subject of psychedelics, Refer to Terence McKenna's Food of the Gods, Invisible Landscape, Archaic Revival; Rupert Sheldrake, Ralph Abraham, Ralph Metzner, Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffman, Peter Furst, Aldoux Huxley, William Blake, Roger Heim, A Hoffer, H Osmund, Mircea Eliade, Richard E. Shultes, Dennis Mckenna, Snyder Solomon, Michael Harner, Marlene Dobkin, David Aberle, im sure there are many many others however those are some of my favorites.
Outdate; a book for collectors though!.......2000-03-28
Times have changed and methods have gotten about a hundredtimes easier than is presented in this book. Never-the-less I stillhold my own original printing copy of this book dear to my heart. END

Shiitake cultivation : not for everybody.......1999-12-13
This is a well-written book about technical and practical aspects of commercial shiitake growing. If you are seriously considering commercial production of shiitake it is a must-have book.
Its subtitle, "The Art and Science of Mushroom Growing" is misleading. Far more accurate would be "The Science and Practice of Commercial Shiitake Production". Except for a phylogenetic references, it has nothing to say about mushrooms other than shiitake. I had set out to learn enough about mushrooms in general and shiitake in particular to grow a few for friends and family. Unfortunately, the shiitake is native to Southeast Asia and likes a steadily warm humid environment. Based on what I gathered from this book, neither amateur nor commercial shiitake production is practical where I live, so I'm still looking for a good book on small-scale mushroom cultivation in a temperate climate

A fine introduction for anyone interested in mushrooms.......1998-05-21
Dr. Benjamin makes no pretense of being an expert at mushroom identification, but rather focuses on the history, culinary use, medicinal properties and toxicology of mushrooms. The central part of the book deals with the symptoms and treatment of mushroom poisoning. Dr. Benjamin takes what is, suprisingly, considered by many to be a contrarian position, that physicians should be best advised to treat mushroom poisoning on the basis of symptoms alone, and not wait for an identification of the mushroom responsible. Previous books on this subject have focused (perhaps unnecessarily), on identification first, having been written primarily from the viewpoint of mycologists. It's refreshing, to say the least to have a book more directed to the physician.
That's not to say that there isn't plenty here for the mycologist, or the amateur. It's really as much as anyone needs to know, complete with copious references.

First choice.......2007-03-13
If I could only have one mushroom book, this would be the one. It is easy to use and displays almost all of the information I need for inital identifcation of a mushroom on one page.
Practical size, good quality pictures. Recommend as a Field Guide.......2006-10-02
I like this book as a useful field guide to mushrooms in the Northeast. It has very nice pictures as well as descriptions. It also fits nicely into my basket. It doesn't have many of the mushrooms I find, but which book does? - particularly a field guide.

It's all there!.......2007-08-29
Pryor's book is well-written and organized, making for easy use and interesting reading. I bought the book as a gift to a friend who shared her kombucha "mushroom" with me. The mushroom had been given to her and she wasn't sure how to make or use it. Now we're both benefitting. I mix the prepared tea with apple juice (1 part tea to two apple). It tastes deliciously like apple cider and I feel energetic after drinking it.
The Miracle Tea, easy to make!.......2007-03-09
I am so pleased with this book! Laurel Farms has been checked out by the government and passed every test!
The receipe is simple and the book tells you how many different things this tea has healed for other people.
Even gettting gray hair to turn back to its natural hair color. The tea rejuvenates the body and lets the body work more efficiently. I can't wait to make more and more tea and get my friends to drink it! Its naturally addictive!
Extremely helpful; tells how to do it safely, well written.......2006-06-02
Betsy is the person who brought the Kombucha into the United States in the early 90's. She's the expert. In her book she tells you all about it. She gives instructions exactly how to do it safely and how to get the best "tea" possible. The text is comfortable to read. Kombucha is not for smokers though as it tries to "houseclean" the body so smokers can't use it. Kombucha is something you slowly build up on so start with 1/8 cup and then slowly build to 1.5 cups a day over a period of a couple of weeks. Muscle tone, skin tone, energy, etc. will be much improved. A person feels better with it as it is nutrition in a glass. Generally you drink it on an empty stomach like mornings. You "process" it for a length of time (a week+)until the solution has "developed" to the ph needed. You need to use it up before it has gone to far past its best ph level; it can be too tart after it has aged to long. It requires a "start" and a piece of kombucha to begin--green tea/black tea bags, white sugar, pure water and a clean clear glass container, with some muslim on the top to protect it. That's the beginning of the story...Read the book. Try it. Its incredible.

covers all the bases.......2006-07-12
This DK Handbook is so easy to follow especially on a subject as vast as mushrooms! The layout is great. each page has one mushroom documented in a photograph, a sliced view and also an illustration...too perfect. also edibility. I wish DK would come out with this style of handbooks for trees, insects, etc. I would by them all!
Memories of Mycology.......2002-03-23
One of my first memories of finding mushrooms was when I was a young child. Apparently what we had found was called a common puffball. Another interesting experiences with mushrooms was when I found them growing in carpet in the damp basement of a house in Seattle, WA. It was amazing, there in the carpet, these silly mushrooms had decided to grow in the dark basement without any sunlight. One wonders if they were aspiring to be a truffle from France.
My most recent discovery was an amazing "Fly Amanita" (see picture on left in the middle of the book cover) a few years ago in October, which was so perfect and fresh, I ran back to my house to get my camera. They are the classic fairy-tale toadstool with an orange cap and smooth faintly grooved margin and white veil scales on the surface. Apparently it is poisonous if eaten in large quantities. Amanita muscaria is actually one of the best known of all fungus species. I sent a picture to Martha Stewart to ask her what type of toadstool it was. That was before I had this lovely book. Well, she sent me back the pictures and thanked me for the letter, but never told me what the species was. I reviewed her new cookbook anyway.
What I didn't know was that these mushrooms have a close beneficial relationship with a host spruce tree. Below ground, there is a mycorrhizal partnership where the fungus grows a mantle around the tiniest tree roots and a net of hyphae in between the outer root cells. Nutrients are exchanged between the partners via complex chemical pathways.
Most of the mushrooms and toadstools you will find are in wooded areas in the fall. Identification can be difficult. This book can be an aid to identifying various species. However it is strongly recommended that beginners take along an experienced forager if they are gathering mushrooms for eating. There are some edible species that look very similar to poisonous ones and the effects of eating a poisonous mushroom can lead to fatal liver damage or death. I would not be able to tell the difference between Agaricus Xanthoderma and Agaricus Arvensis. They are just too similar.
The fungi features in this book are placed in one of 16 main sections, based on their most obvious visual characteristics. You will find the scientific family name and season in which the mushroom will appear at the top of each page. You can learn about the habitat and geographical distribution, similarities to other species and see cross-sections for useful details such as flesh color.
From the delicate and almost flower like Umbrella Inky Cap to the spectacular Cinnabar Chanterelle, every mushroom you could imagine is listed here.
While I'm not a member of a amateur mushroom hunting club, I have thought it would be rather fun. After all, I've already found the most beautiful Fly Amanita and after taking that picture, thought it would be amusing to go looking for more mushrooms to photograph. It is almost more fun to go take pictures, have them developed and then try to identify your recent find.

A Visual Treat of Mushrooms.......2000-05-21
The pictures in this guide are incredible! The picture above pales in comparison to the actual book cover, and it is too bad that there has not been a picture of one of the pages included.
Each type of mushroom or fungus has its own half page section. The sections have a large and vivid pictures of the species. Did I mention that the pictures are incredible? Usually sections have supporting pictures such as top views and gill views of the mushrooms. It also gives species information, season availability, and dimensions in centimeters of the cap and the stem. The discussion in the section gives written information on description, occurrence, and similar species.
As far as edibility of mushrooms, this guide gives a symbol for the categories of edible, non-edible, and poisonous. This is really the only discussion of edibility, so this book is not a guide to eating mushrooms, but an overall guide to mushrooms.
The cover is close to being waterproof, which makes it excellent for taking into the field. The pages are high-quality paper. This book is a tremendous deal!
Gorgeous.......1999-11-28
This book is fabulously beautiful. I'm not planning on hunting mushrooms. And I think this book has more mushrooms in it than I'll ever see in my life. But the book is printed on beautiful paper, the photographs are meticulously printed, and mushrooms are just plain beautiful.
If you buy only one mushroom field guide, this is the one!.......1999-09-24
Excellent! This is the best mushroom field guide I have ever seen. This book shows sharp photos of each mushroom, as well as photos in cross section and of the underside. Photos are not of the mushroom in its natural habitat, but are on a white background, so each photo is well focused and well lit. Also includes a tiny photo or drawing of the mushroom in its natural habitat. Comprehensive-includes mushrooms that don't appear in my other two books. Mushrooms listed both by scientific and by popular names. Extremely conservative in the 'shrooms that it classifies as edible. Book is designed for the beginner ("What is a Mushroom?") as well as the advanced (spore chart). The quality of the book itself is very high; it is printed on excellent paper and stays open to a page when needed. It appears to be well bound and I think the paperback cover will look good even after many trips in the backpack.
