Book Description

The skaters included in this book all made a strong impression on the skating world, contributing to the development of the sport through commanding athletic prowess, unusual aesthetic characteristics, or sheer force of personality. They reflected and illuminated their times and environments. Certainly none of them could be called boring, the deadliest sin in Toller’s lexicon. In many cases they are skaters who elevated figure skating to an art form, but some altered the course of the sport in a way that may have been negative.

Each chapter starts with a short biography and then Toller contributes his well-honed and very personal assessment. Finally, Toller brings the book right up to date with his Epilogue: A Salt Lake City Retrospective.

Readers and fans are aware of Toller Cranston’s way with a quip, his flamboyant personality, and his outspoken opinions. In Ice Cream, they will also learn more about his deep knowledge of skating, his sensitive artistic judgement, and his acute observations of fellow skaters. But make no mistake, the Toller we all know is here in spades.

Fans of Toller Cranston's other books will have some idea of what to expect here. Toller isn't frightened to say what he thinks or be controversial! As it says in the introduction - take your blood pressure pills skating fans. I found it a great read, and Toller's obvious love for the sport/art of figure skating and its history shines through. You may not agree with the opinions he has of some of the skaters listed but he expresses his opinions in a very entertaining way. Martha Kimball as always provides good introductory factual information on each skater before Toller lets loose!

5 out of 5 stars The Strawberry King does it again..........2002-09-23

I don't know what I love more: Mr. Cranston's brilliant portraits or his skating knowledge! He has hit the trifecta with his latest tales of fame, fortune, and famine in figure skating by illustrating the more personal points of 25 of the most interesting skaters of our time. Honest, witty, laugh-out-loud funny, and exasperating, Toller tells all. Notable chapters include the "real" Dorothy Hamill, Gary Beacom, and the Queen of Spin, Lucinda Ruh. If you enjoyed his first two books, you'll devour this one with equal joy. Love him, hate him, agree or disagree, this is a thought-provoking look at some of the world's greatest skaters from one of Canada's most colorful personalities. I've been in the sport 26 years and I must say I have a clearer picture with regards to the skaters/artists I've watched and admired. A must read for any serious skating collection.

Book Description

Most sports fans have heard the tragic story of the plane crash that killed all the members of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team, along with sixteen of their friends, family and coaches. Now, for the first time, Frozen in Time takes readers inside the lives of the skaters, telling one of the most iconic stories in the history of American sport.

The dramatic focus lingers on two families of powerful women. Maribel Owen—the most famous woman in figure skating at the time—who relentlessly drove her two young daughters, pairs champion Mara and the spectacular Laurence, who graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. Myra Westerfeld, meanwhile, lost her marriage while guiding her daughters Sherri and Steffi to the pinnacle of the sport.

Author Nikki Nichols also explores the crash’s aftermath, an unprecedented period in American athletics. The U.S. skating program had lost all of its stars and struggled to rebuild with very young competitors, such as Peggy Fleming. But, perhaps the most far-reaching effect was the creation of a memorial fund that would support skaters who would not otherwise be able to afford the sport—among them Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, and others.

5 out of 5 stars Still enduring...........2007-10-08

In 1961, the greatest tragedy in U.S. figure skating history - and possibly world figure skating history - took place when a Sabena-Belgian Airlines Boeing 707 developed problems trying to land at Brussels airport. The plane nosedived into a farmer's field, killing everyone aboard. Among those on board were 18 members of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating team, who were heading to the World Championships in Prague. This is the story of those skaters.
This book focuses largely on Laurence & Maribel Vinson Owen, as well as Stephanie Westerfield, who were the most well-known members, but also mentions skaters such as Laurie Jean Hickox and Doug Ramsay. It talks in-depth about the training & competitions they went through to become U.S. Figure Skating team members, as well as the terrible accident itself & how it affected U.S. Figure Skating at large - especially the rush to produce new skaters to replace those so tragically lost.
Journalist (and adult competitive figure skater) Nikki Nichols has done an excellent job in telling the very real stories of these people who were the Americans' best hopes for 1964, and never got to perform. Most of today's figure skaters have never heard the sad story of the 1961 US team, and this book is an excellent telling of their story. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One wonders what these people would have become.......2007-02-14

.......the Vinson-Owen legacy in its fifth generation.......?

This is the story of the 1961 American figure skating team whose plane crashed, outside Brussels, en route to the world championships in Prague, killing all aboard and changing the face of American figure skating forever. Previous reviewers criticize the author for relying so heavily on speculation, but for an event that happened nearly five decades ago and many of the people who could tell the story are deceased as well, I think she did an excellent job.

To me, the biggest scandal in the book was not the Laurence Owen/Stephanie Westerfeld rivalry, but rather the dissolution of Stephanie's family shortly before the crash. Her parents have both been dead for over 20 years and therefore cannot tell their stories, but to have a child who was a champion figure skater AND a budding concert pianist.....are there enough hours in the day?

Maribel Vinson-Owen didn't seem to be the most likable person (a vast understatement) but she blazed trails without realizing it. A Radcliffe graduate, the first woman sportswriter at the New York Times, AND she nearly destroyed her coaching career by allowing a black skater to practice at her rink? That took some guts. This skater, Mabel Ferguson, continues to promote skating to the black community.

This book is a quick read, and I ordered it at the library the day before seeing "We Are Marshall", about a plane crash that also killed 75 people. The Sabena crash officially had 73 casualties, but one of the passengers was pregnant and a farmer was killed on the ground by falling debris. It doesn't look like things have changed much regarding the treatment of crash survivors' families, but that's another book altogether.

Most of the 1961 performances can be viewed on You Tube.

5 out of 5 stars A friend remembered............2007-01-30

I truly enjoyed this book. One of my best childhood friends died in the 1961 plane crash, her name was Laurence Owen. This book brought back many memories of a wonderful young girl taken far to soon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Figure Skating. It gives insight to many of the wonderful people who died on that February day.

4 out of 5 stars Frozen in time a review.......2007-01-28

I have known about the accident that clamed the us skating team lives and have written about it in class writing projects. I have to this the best and only book on this sad footnote in skating history that I feel has been been buried by the figure skating community for years I only wish this book came out earler. I highly recommend this book as a start in any research in this sad day in us figure history I only wish more would come out on this subject

5 out of 5 stars A So Long Ago Tragedy Finally Remembered .......2007-01-26

This story pays respect and tribute to talented young athletes who exited the sporting stage with a high price --- their lives. The author introduces these skaters to the reader along with their coaches and family members. She also attempts to tell the readers of what these people were like both athletically and personally by imagining herself observing them. I found this book to be a reverent memorial in that Nichols brings these artists to life and succeeds in showing that they have not been forgotten.

Book Description

Scott Hamilton is one of the most beloved figure skaters in the world-not just among his colleagues, but to the sport's countless fans as well. So when the Olympic gold medalist and four-time World Champion launched his "Stars on Ice" tour back in 1986, everyone wished him the best. In fact, the best is exactly what he got. Hamilton's "Stars on Ice" has become the most successful ice skating tour on the planet. In this lively look at figure skating's most remarkable success story, Stars on Ice features full-color illustrations of the graceful skaters who have entertained fans throughout the show's reign. From Dorothy Hamill to Brian Orser, from Katarina Witt to Kristi Yamaguchi, Stars on Ice beautifully displays the talents of Olympic and World Champion skaters through stunningly realistic photography. In addition, behind-the-scenes vignettes from the tour reveal the heartfelt camaraderie and sense of family felt among the skaters. From the tour's early days of opening night fiascoes to the tragically unexpected loss of Sergei Grinkov to Scott Hamilton's own battle with cancer, Stars on Ice tells a tale of a sport that has touched fans like no other.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good text, Better photos :-).......2000-07-22

Wonderful coffee-table style book documents the tour "Stars On Ice", and is a definite choice for fans of professional figure skating. The brilliant photographs, a perfect balance of personal and professional, out-do the text...which is good but could be more profound over-all. In addition to the other stars, Gordeeva & Grinkov fans especially will enjoy the memoir and the pictures...Lipinski, Kulik, Chen, Cousins, and Meno-Sand fans might be disappointed in the only 6 pages devoted to those skaters. A little short but well worth the photos!

5 out of 5 stars Breath taking.........1999-11-01

This book was what i expected it to be. It was full of colorful pictures, and very good description of how Stars on Ice evolved to what it is now. GREAT pictures excellent story....though if u were thinking of getting the video "The Best of Stars on Ice" ... it wasnt good at all. They were performances from the last 5 years and not the 10 years it talks about on its back cover..

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work about how Stars On Ice evolved into The Tour!.......1999-10-18

Reason why I bought the book: Just one. Rosalynn Sumners. She was rather reluctant when Scott called her and invited her to join the tour......and that was back in 1986. Thirteen years and a few hundred shows later, Roz has matured into one of the finest entertainers on the ice. Her departure from the SOI tour after the 1998-99 season was rather sad, but rereading her thoughts and feelings on subjects such as Sergei's death to Scott's cancer and her own shining moments was well worth the money I paid for the book. Roz, I'll miss you when SOI starts the 1999-2000 tour. God bless!

5 out of 5 stars Great photos.......1999-08-18

This book has lots of great photos pf all the skaters. A must for every SOI fan.

5 out of 5 stars Brings You Close To Katia and SOI!!.......1999-05-05

I thought this was an absolutely fantastic book!!! It really gets you up close and personal with the World's Greatest Skating Tour, and I loved the chapter in tribute to Sergei Grinkov. Lots of terrific pictures from all the programs through the years!! It starts out with the story of how Stars On Ice got started, and tells about the earliest skaters, all the way up to today's performers (like my favourite, Katia Gordeeva). This book is a must-have for any fan of SOI and skating in general. You will definately have to see the show in person, after this book!!!

3 out of 5 stars Less interesting than it could have been.......2006-08-24

This was ... pretty good ... but kinda like the little girl with the little curl. Where it's good it's really interesting. Where it's bad it just ... dull. Some sections the author goes into a lot of detail about skaters and events. Other sections read rather like a biblical geneology. "Jane Jones won in 1936 and Sue Smith won in 1937 and Mary Martin won in 1938 and 1939." Tell us MORE about Jane and Sue and Mary. What were their performances like? Who was the competition?

Skaters who were neither world nor olympic champions, even if their stories are interesting and they've made a major impact (i.e., Paul Wylie) barely rate a mention.

Many of the photos are posed shots rather than action photos, making it hard to picture what the events might have been like.

I did find it very interesting to read about synchronized skating and adult skating. (Having a friend who is involved in both, but knowing little about it, it was very enlightening.)

4 out of 5 stars Well-written history without being sappy.......2006-04-18

This book will go over the heads of most skating fans and the author admits it. He even says that most books about figure skating fall into the category of "juvenile literature" because that's who's interested in them.

That said, it's a wonderful history of the sport - back to caveman days! - and goes into the story of things many people don't know about now, like school figures, or bat an eye at, like non-white skaters. The photos at the back are fascinating to look at because of the changes in clothing styles and the sport's transition from winter-only to year-round in the 1960s. There is also a chapter on skating teams, including foursomes, a phenomenon almost unique to Canadian skaters, with a bizarre picture of two men and two women doing a simultaneous death spiral. It looked, um, kinda kinky. The section on adult skating - competitive or not - was fun to read as well. Its participants range from late teens to seniors.

Little is said about scandals other than the infamous Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan thing, but the AIDS epidemic's impact on male skaters, a huge percentage of whom are gay, is hinted at simply because of the large number of men who died too young in the 1980s and 1990s. There is also a section on the plane crash that killed the entire 1961 U.S. skating team, their coaches, and some of their relatives, and led to the cancellation of that year's world championships and destroyed America's lead in this sport for many years afterwards.

I found it was not a book that I could just sit down and read, other than the chapters in the front, but rather looked things up in the index and went from there.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Long overdue...a perfect 6.0.......2006-02-10

This is a brilliant book -- and sorely needed one for afficionados of the sport. At last -- a serious, scholarly, up-to-date history of figure skating! The book traces the history of sport (the development of skates, positions, moves, etc.) from its earliest days in the Middle Ages when skating was a practical way of getting around in Nordic countries, through the first skating clubs in Elizabethan England and its rise in popularity in the 19th century, and, especially, 19th century America. The book is well documented, with footnotes and photos of all the important figures (there's even a picture of St. Lydwina -- the Roman Catholic patroness of skaters!) It gives a descriptive accounts of figure skating moves (jumps, spins, spirals, school figures, etc.) and how they developed along with their inventors; it also focuses on innovators of the sport who may not have won any championships and the development of the scoring system. It is all-embracing in its approach describing the sport as found in Europe, the Americas and the sport's recent surge in Asia. It also includes an appendix with tables of all winners (up to the year 2005) for World, European, Olympic and various oher championships. There are photographs of every world and Olympic champion -- a nice added extra, as it helps reveal how much the sport has changed through the past century. This book is for those who are serious about the sport, follow it closely and are interested in detailed accounts of figure skating as a competitive sport with a noble history, and as entertainment -- qualities unique to skating. It's a terrific book -- and it's about time!

The book is well written with a clear historical perspective including information about how the equipment has changed over the years, something you often don't find in other skating books. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Engaging Read!.......2001-07-31

I bought this book on the recommendation of friends and I'm glad I did -- it's a wonderful look inside skating though the words of the skaters and skating community themselves, with very little editorial commentary. The stories are easy to follow and really bring a different perspective into the wins, losses, triumphs and tragedies the skating world has gone through over the past half century. I enjoyed all the stories in the book except for one, where a couple of hockey players discuss power skating. Normally I wouldn't care one way or the other about it except that one of them pretty much trashes the sport of figure skating in a statement he makes, and I question the inclusion of this in a book aimed at figure skaters and fans (who akready have to hear stuff like this enough as it is!) But this is a minor quibble. Skip the hockey player story and you'll be fine. :)

5 out of 5 stars one of the best figure skating books availiable.......1999-05-28

This book is a collection of interviews with some of the world's top skaters. The choice of champions included goes beyong the usual list of world titleholders and Olympic champions to stars true skating fans rarely see and would love to know more about, such as spinning phenom Lucinda Ruh.

Most of the stories are personal, giving more insight into the skaters lives than a collection of competition results and technical explanations would. For anyoe who follows figure skating, this is a must-have book.

5 out of 5 stars The year's best!.......1999-05-02

I have read a lot of figure skating books published this year and last and this unpretentious, soft cover book is the best. It is a series of oral essays by skaters, coaches, commentators and officials. Those interviewed, some famous, some not, talk about everything from skating as Mickey Mouse for Disney, to what it is like to come and train in the US. from Russia, to some of the dramatic, tragic stories of this little world as the death of Sergei Grinkov. Mr. Milton must be a good interviewer because he draws out the skaters and others in the book so that they provide real insight and emotion to the subject. And we see their love for their sport on every page. This book has more content than any of the flashy, coffee table books produced recently. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read!.......1999-03-29

While this book is not long on depth, it does give some entertaining insights into the thoughts behind the images. Great for younger readers as well.

4 out of 5 stars Skaters talk from the heart.......1998-07-11

A interesting book that allows the skaters to comment without interruption. The book is a series of comments from almost any skater you have heard of on almost any skating subject you can think of. An interesting and enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Great autobio of a great champion.......2004-08-19

Fans of Rudy Galindo and figure skating will enjoy this frank autobiography that leaves out nothing and gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the fast-paced and sometimes heartless world of international skating. Rudy's working class family made major sacrifices to keep him in the sport, and the reader can't help but be moved. USFSA politics is exposed for what it is - they can and will scuttle a skater's career if s/he doesn't fit their "image" - and you'll shake your head yet again over the strange world of judging. Rudy tells it all, and the good news is that his career is far from over. Sequel, anyone?

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel What He Is Feeling.......2000-02-13

Rudy Galindo's autobiography ICEBREAKER is wonderful. Rudy's honest and vivid descriptions of his feelings make the reader cry and cheer right along with him. This book is an inspiration to anyone who feels that he/she is different. It is such an example of how anyone can reach his/her goal against all odds if they will work hard enough and never, never give up. Rudy Galindo is a true champion in every way -- not just on the ice -- and this book shows that beautifully.

4 out of 5 stars Here's one bio that's never on thin ice.......2000-02-10

I liked Galindo's sweetly naive depiction of himself as the "All-American kid," even if he does flirt with denial at times. After all, he grew up border-poor in a dysfunctional family with a self-destructive gay older brother (who was a terrible role model for gay Rudy), and Latino when that was still a social burden.

But "Icebreaker" is very much a story of hard-won triumph, and I really got the sense that Rudy's positive attitude got him over the hurdles and into the stardom he so richly deserves. (That, and loads of native talent: he was quite recently the best amateur male figure skater in the USA, no. 3 in the world.)

Rudy is a professional skater now, and he has some pointed opinions in this book about the perils of excessive juvenile skating competition for those who are willing to listen. Skating enthusiasts will enjoy the extensive technical vocabulary in this book; I just held on and enjoyed the ride. A very good read about a very admirable young man who is a role model in several different ways.

3 out of 5 stars Greg was better........2000-02-07

Something about this book just isn't very satisfying. When I saw the name Eric Marcus attatched to the book I was excited because I remembered that he helped Greg Louganis produce an excellent book. However, Rudy's book leaves a lot to be desired. The sroty seemes to focus more on his skating. True, skating was a vital part of his life, but it seemes that's all there is. This book would have been better if more time was spent on the events that happened between competitions.

4 out of 5 stars Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!.......2000-01-28

This warts-and-all autobiography traces figure-skater Galindo's life from early childhood to his turning pro. Not too long ago Rudy was the no. 1 male figure skater in the USA and no. 3 worldwide; the story of how he triumphed over a dysfunctional, near-povery-level background is inspiring and uplifting. Although gay, Rudy perpetually casts himself as the "All-American" kid. Time and again the conservative skating authorities told him his costumes were a bit too flamboyant, his wrists too slack to win the big-time points; to his credit Rudy ignored them and won anyway. Though some may find it a bit too emotional, "Icebreaker" is a winner, and anyone who still thinks gays lack grit would do well to check it out.

    2 out of 5 stars Uhm.....no thanks........2000-12-06

I have the first printing of this book (the one with Bourne and Kraatz on the cover) and I was less than impressed with it. It had a horrendously enormous Canadian bias in it -- if reviewers who complained about Beverly Smith's Figure Skating: A Celebration having too much of a Canadian bias picked up this book, they would be beside themselves. There are certainly many great skaters from Canada, but the lengths this book went to in including low level Canadian skaters while excluding high profile skaters from other countries was absurd. For example, on one page there were several young ladies skaters pictured in color from Canada who might be well known there, however they are all but anonymous to the casual skating public at large. Prominent skaters like Kristi Yamaguchi, an Olympic gold medalist, on the other hand, were all but ignored in this book. Some of the pictures were also erroneously labeled as well.

Some of the book was nice -- it had some interesting pictures I've not seen in other books. Hopefully in this next printing of the book (the one shown above) these many problems were fixed -- I only have the first edition so that's the only one I can review. Unless huge changes were made to eliminate the bias in the edition I own, however, I cannot recommend this book to any knowledgeable skating fan.

    4 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......1999-03-29

This book is a beauty! The photography is beautiful, the writing is thoughtful, and the authors took the time to touch on a variety of topics, some of which are seldom if ever written about elsewhere at any great length(ie: precision skating). A great book for fans, athletes, and casual observers alike!

4 out of 5 stars This is a very good book........1998-02-01

This book talks about many things not written about in other books. It has a chapter on precision skating and skating in movies. It has lists of world, Olympic and national champions as well as members of the Canadain, American and World figure skating hall of fame. The book also looks at the four disaplines of skating and show skating. I reccomend this book to skating fans.
