This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

    Book Description

Everyone's heard of the Great Whites. But most people know little of the hundreds of other types of sharks that inhabit the world's oceans. Written by two of the world's leading authorities and superbly illustrated by wildlife artist Marc Dando, this is the first comprehensive field guide to all 440-plus shark species. Color plates illustrate all species, and detailed accounts include diagnostic line drawings and a distribution map for each species. Introductory chapters treat physiology, behavior, reproduction, ecology, diet, and sharks' interrelationships with humans.

4 out of 5 stars Complete and Intriguing.......2006-05-30

Growing up around brothers and cousins who fish and swimming in the mighty Atlantic, sharks have been a whisper in my life that may get lost in being at the shore. I have been in the water with sharks, caught sharks, discovered dead sharks washed up on the shore, and played the role of amateur ichthyologist (sp?) when a shark was brought in over four feet long.

This book is not for everyone, it is a scientific almanac or encyclopedia of species of sharks that one has never heard of. But it does fill in the great mysteries about those sharks one does encounter, and expands one's curiousity to the other infamous fish in the waters. I held this book in my hand trying to determine if a still flopping shark of 48" was a bull shark or a sandbar shark... the book succeeded where wisened fishermen failed. It would be welcome in the hands of the curious, the fisherman, or the student.

5 out of 5 stars AT LAST, AT LAST, AT LAST!!!.......2005-11-18

It's finally here -- THE DEFINITIVE and COMPLETELY (yes, very literally) EXHAUSTIVE shark guide. I've just picked up my copy and it still feels like a dream. As a serious shark enthusiast, this is the book that I have always dreamed about but has never existed, until now. If you're a shark enthusiast, it would be a tragedy not to acquire this book. Here's why:

    (1) There are lavish full color illustrations of every single species of shark known today -- 404 described species and 49 as-yet-undescribed species on 64 plates, each species in oblique view (not the usual profile shot), giving invaluable information on its shape in 3 dimensions. In addition to the most popular species (such as the great white or the blacktip reef shark), the least well known are also included in this book, such as Deania quadrispinosum or Etmopterus pusillus, or new species, such as Isistius labialis or Somniosus antarcticus. There are 3 plates of 18 species of angel sharks (Squatinidae)! All 5 species of Oxynotus are included! Nine species of saw shark (Pristiophoridae)!

    (2) All breath-takingly accurate illustrations are by the same artist, ensuring consistent style. Mark Dando is among the most accomplished of shark artists; his attention to detail is truly astounding. As a discriminating and accomplished fellow natural history artist, I know what I'm talking about. Having said that, please understand that the illustrations chosen for the cover, while wonderfully accurate, are not representative of the exquisite skill demonstrated in his illustrations of more colorful species, such as the ornate wobbegong (Orectolobus ornatus). Therefore, at the risk of sinking in the mire of cliche, I nevertheless urge you not to judge this book by its cover!

    (3) The work is truly exhaustive, not only in the number of species depicted. Where there is sufficient variation within a species, additional color illustrations depict sexual dimorphism, juvenile forms and races. All species are presented to scale with each other and a scale bar is provided for easy size comparisons.

    (4) For those with a taste for the traditional practice of depicting sharks in profile line drawings, the illustrator satisfies in the textual portion of the book. Again, every single species is beautifully presented in a fine ink line drawing from the side (or from the top in angel sharks and saw sharks). With every species is included a detailed range map, and for most species the teeth are also illustrated. For many, the ventral view of the head is also presented.

    (5) The text reads like a field guide, providing detailed notes on the measurements, distinguishing features, distribution, habitat, behavior, biology and status of each species, written by leading authorities on sharks. It even includes a checklist at the end so that shark watchers can record their sightings in the field.

I am completely confident that no shark enthusiast will be disappointed in this book. Seriously folks, the editorial review provided by the publisher for this book underestimates its worth. It's truly a gem and will probably remain the definitive reference and the ultimate field guide for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars A must for shark workers and enthusiasts.......2005-05-06

If you don't know anything about Leonard Compagno, you should know that he is a very thorough archivist. It was he who cataloged all of the known shark species for the FAO Species Catalog, presumably the basis for this book. The book begins with a small introductory section on sharks (evolution, anatomy, physiology, ecology, etc.) and a key to the families. This is followed by wonderfully drawn color plates of each shark. The individual descriptions of the sharks include a line drawing with notable characters, examples of upper and lower teeth (more if heterodontic), distributions and a short blurb that includes habitat, size, behavior and biology, descriptions and IUCN status. Included are relatively new species and all of the deep-water forms. I cannot imagine needing another guide, at least for the next ten years. New species aren't exactly rolling in. I would recommend, however, a hardback copy for field workers, as paperbacks don't last very long with heavy usage. Also, keep in mind that other elasmobranchs are not included. I have not seen Compagno's much cheaper Collins Guide (only available in hardback), but I do know that this Princeton Guide is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars though might not be comprehensive as some want, served it's purpose for me.......2007-09-21

After several trips to local rivers and finding sharks teeth, I was looking for an easy to read, easy to use refrence to find out what we were finding. Served it's purpose to this point. Not too much information and just enough. I thought pictures were very adequate in helping to identify teeth we had found.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, but not perfect.......2007-05-19

An essential guide for those who collect fossil shark teeth because it's the most comprehensive available. Which is not to say it is as good as it could be. Yes, the biggest complaint is the photographs, which are sometimes murky and do not show scale. I'd like to see a graphic which shows a silhouette of the tooth in an actual size range, then a good photo of examples of the teeth. Glossy color photos on a consistent background would be good. True, colors change from site to site and are irrelevant to identifying species, but the teeth can be very beautiful and in some instances (NJ Cretaceous) the variety of colors is breathtaking. A number of common species are not represented (Cretaceous Sand Tigers for instance) and common names uncited. Site ranges for each species across the US would also be nice too. That said, I do refer to the book regularly, and have recommended it to or purchased it for others.

3 out of 5 stars The lesser of many evils?????.......2006-04-05

Apparently, there is a dearth of good fossil shark tooth guides. The quality of the most important aspect of the book, the illustrations, is very poor. Most look like third generation Xeroxed photographs, others appear to be blown up beyond recognition, many are white-washed, some are pixilated, and a few are so grainy and out of focus that they could represent just about anything. In the Scyliorhinus photograph, the teeth are less than three millimeters across! The information the author provides, however, can be quite beneficial. Each species comes with a description including the age of the fossil, synonyms, key characters and a listing of similar species. This information, and considering that the cataloging is quite extensive, allows me to rate this book with three stars. There is a great deal of room for improvement, however. The collection locality (often, just the state) is given for each image, but other locales are not provided. Morphometric information may be a valuable addition, especially to distinguish juveniles, sexually dimorphic forms and underdeveloped teeth. In addition to the listing of similar species, an actual description of the defining characters of each would help to differentiate the species. There is some additional information-associated fossils, a few Paleozoic and Mesozoic forms, a dendrogram of Lamniform evolution, etc.-but none of it is complete. Unfortunately, this is best guide that I've found to date!

5 out of 5 stars Great book from a really nice guy! .......2005-03-28

Joe signed a copy of this book for me after buying one of my shark teeth on eBay. It's a GREAT reference! I use it almost every day to ID the teeth I buy and find. It's extremely easy to use! I recommend this for anyone that collects fossil shark teeth!

4 out of 5 stars a good fossil shark tooth reference.......2004-11-23

This book has been an excellent help to me. I normally collect Cretaceous teeth in the Monmouth County area of Northern New Jersey and the teeth in this book have helped even with this. I highly recommend it to other serious collectors. I would have liked to have seen other areas referenced though.

In July 1916, a time of record-setting heat and a raging polio epidemic, beachgoers along the New Jersey shore confronted a greater terror still: lurking in the water swam a shark, or perhaps several sharks, that had apparently developed a taste for human flesh. Within less than two weeks, the offending fish killed four swimmers and badly injured another, setting off a wave of panic that kept visitors well out of the water and threatened the state's thriving tourist economy.

Officials were quick to react. President Woodrow Wilson, himself from New Jersey, sought and received $5,000 from Congress to eradicate the villain. Unsure of which species was to blame, commercial fishermen and state police alike destroyed every shark they encountered, while some conspiracy-minded journalists hinted that the attacks had somehow been triggered by German U-boats plying the waters off New Jersey.

Those strange events of 1916 are not much remembered today, except, perhaps, by fans of Peter Benchley's novel Jaws, whose origin lies in the attacks. Richard Fernicola revives the incident with this thoroughgoing investigation, which offers solid information on the natural history and behavior of the many shark species that populate the Atlantic, and which hazards educated guesses as to which kind of shark did the fatal mischief--and why. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

In July 1916, with the specter of American involvement in World War I on the horizon and New York City in the throes of a deadly polio epidemic, the tri-state population thronged the Jersey shore in search of a respite from the stifling midsummer heat. The Atlantic's refreshing waters proved to be utterly inhospitable, however. In a shockingly brief span of just twelve days, four swimmers were violently and fatally mauled by a marauding shark (or school of sharks), and a fifth was seriously injured, escaping within inches of his life. By the third week in July, national newspapers were headlining reports of "Battles Against Man-Eating Sharks" above the battles of war across the ocean. In this thoroughly researched account, Dr. Richard Fernicola, the leading expert on the attacks, presents a riveting portrait of these twelve days of terror against the colorful backdrop of America in 1916. With the perspicacity of a private eye, he immerses himself in the specifics of the events as he carefully examines clues and reconstructs evidence to resolve what scientists have been arguing over for decades. Was a rogue shark or a school of sharks responsible? Was it a bull shark or a great white shark? Was the shark's motivation hunger or fear? Through primary sources and face-to-face interviews with witnesses, Fernicola pieces together a conclusive, if controversial, theory regarding the character and cause of these mysterious attacks. Part fascinating social history, part spellbinding detective story, Twelve Days of Terror is one of those rare books that proves truth can be stranger, more dramatic, and more terrifying than fiction. (6 x 9, 368 pages, b&w photos, illustrations)

Richard G. Fernicola is recognized as the foremost authority on the New Jersey shark attacks of 1916. His research became the basis for the highly acclaimed television documentaries Legends of Killer Sharks and Shark Attack: 1916, which aired on the Discovery Channel and The History Channel. He is also actively involved in the preservation and rescue of marine mammals.

I really enjoyed this book. Although it will keep me out of the oceans and creeks forever! It was very interesting, and packed full of information. A+

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on the attacks of 1916.......2007-07-22

being from the area of the attacks and actually just went to the second annual sharkfest in Matawan yesterday, this book really bring the events of 1916 to life. Mr. Fernicola vividly brings you back to the times of the attacks to give you a great feel of what transpired in those fateful 12 days. A great book for anybody interested in sharks and of history in general, especially of the Jesrey Shore.

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ.......2007-03-29

I got to tell you i am not a big history fan but this book puts one of my favorite animals into the perspective (the shark). This book closely defined the attacks during July 1st and the 12th in 1916 that happened on New Jersey's shore line.
This book reads like a novel with plenty of historical facts and scientific learning. The author, Mr. Fernicola has put a lot of structure into this book.
A must read for anyone who has been fascinated with sharks or the history of New Jersey.
The New Jersey Man-Eater makes the New Jersey Devil run and hide.

3 out of 5 stars Great story but I'm not into all the extra details.......2007-02-07

I was both impressed and bored with this book at the same time. The story of the 1916 attacks was captivating and well written. I enjoy non-fiction and the first 100 pages did not disappoint. I admire and respect all the research and details, but do not care for that type of reading. Much of the book, especially the second half, was about the physiology of shark species as they relate to these attacks and others. I guess I was expecting more of the drama and excitement and less of the science and research. I certainly respect the author's expertise and this may be the most comprehensive study of the 1916 attacks (although it's the only one I've read, so don't hold me to that).

    Book Description

A silly shark and lobster are in a panic to ward off a land-bound menace in this comical ode to the power of suggestion, the joys of teamwork, and the fun to be found in a narrow escape.

Out in the sea, Shark told his friend Lobster one day: "Lobster, I'm scared!"

What could Shark possibly be afraid of? It seems somebody's told him
about a thing that's full of teeth and stripes, and now he's scared of . . .
tigers! Rumor has it these horrible creatures walk on their teeth, glow in the dark, and eat you up. Of course, there's nothing to be done but to build an undersea fortress that will shield Shark and Lobster from this terrible threat, and as word gets around, ocean friends from cuttlefish to spiky crabs get busy piling seven hundred rocks and an old piano to keep tigers away. But is their wall high enough to do the trick? Wouldn't a huge sea monster, big enough to swallow them all, do an even better job of protecting them?

LOVES this book, though it does require a rather energetic performance on the part of the parent/reader.....BUT, the silly subject matter & illustrations are just the kind of thing that kids get hooked on and make you read it OVER AND OVER AND OVER again! Many, many thumbs up. Kudos to the authors/illustrators.

    4 out of 5 stars Fun Book.......2006-11-15

Kids who like Sponge Bob Square Pants will have an easy transition into this silly undersea story. Shark and Lobster decide they are afraid of Tigers. The fear spreads through the sea and many creatures get together to build a fortress. When Shark convinces them they are still not safe, they dive to the depths of the sea and bring back a sea monster to protect them from the Tigers. However, the sea monster has other ideas when it wakes up, making Tigers seem less threatening. The word bubbles and blocks of action make this book very comic book-like. But nothing is conventional, from the digitally colored illustrations to the orientation. Kids ages 4-6 will get a kick out of reading this book sideways.

    4 out of 5 stars What the . . . ?.......2006-10-25

You take Viviane Schwarz and you add her to her partner in crime Joel Stewart and things happen. Craaaazy things happen. Crazy mildly disturbing things, but with enough goofiness to allow the duo their place at the children's literature table. If the innate surrealism of writing "The Adventures of a Nose" together wasn't enough for them, now they're back with "Shark and Lobster's Amazing Undersea Adventures". The entire book feels like someone picked up a picture book, found the format dull, and decided to shake things up a bit. Okay, maybe more than a bit. A LOT. Charming and wacked out all at once, this is undoubtedly one of the more eclectic titles of the 2006 publishing year. Like nothing you've ever seen before.

Shark has a confession to make to his best friend, Lobster. Maybe shark is big and scary with lots of sharp teeth, but do you know what he fears more than anything else in the world? Tigers. Now no one else under the ocean has even necessarily heard of tigers, but what shark says about them is enough to give `em all the heebie jeebies right quick. After some fast thinking the underwater denizens set about building a protective fort. When that turns out not to be enough, though, they enlist the unknowing help of a sleeping monster. The monster, however, finds itself a little put-out regarding the role it's supposed to play and after some thrilling chase sequences the it returns to the briny deep. As for shark and lobster, they decide that tigers aren't anything to be afraid of and all is well in the end.

Now the book is one of those rare horizontal formats. You know what I mean. The kind of thing where you read the story with the book on its side, up to down rather than side to side. Other books have done this in the past of course. I think the best known was probably "Tops and Bottoms" by Janet Stevens (and IT won a Caldecott Honor). Inevitably the reader has to ask if this was a necessary way of presenting the book. I mean, is the author/artist just doing this for kicks or do they have a real reason for wanting elongated pages? "Shark and Lobster" definitely justifies the format, to my mind. The first full spread, after all, shows shark floating frightened in a beautiful blue sea. If a kid can look at this image and comprehend what's going on then you've no need to fear for the rest of the book.

I began this review by talking about how weird this book was, and you might have gotten a small sense of that from my discussion of Shark's fear of tigers (finned tigers!) or the fact that you read the book from top to bottom. But those weren't really the weird parts. Remember when I mentioned that Shark and Lobster decide that the only thing to do is find a monster to help them prevent the onslaught of tigers? Allow me to describe this monster to you a little more fully. It has seven eyes, a light at the tip of its tail (on a lantern), what looks like butterfly wings, some tentacles, two arms (wrists akimbo) sticking out of the top of its skull, and freakiest of all, hundreds of high-heel wearing women's legs. Hundreds. Oh... and a forked nose. She'd be cute if she wasn't quite so DADA. Time and again, the legs are what stop people when they stare at this book. I've never really seen anything quite like them in a children's title before. Monsters come and monsters go, but few look as if they've spent their spare hours modeling for Dali on the side. I, personally, think the monster is heavenly, but I guess I could see how some middle-of-the-road people would be seriously weirded out by her appearance. In short, consider handing this book to a kid with easygoing parents. Those of an uptight nature may find monster-dear just a tad off-putting.

With this book, Ms. Schwarz does the writing and drawing and her husband is relegated to coloring only. There's quite a bit of hand-lettering and some illustrations are drawn in ink, but color-wise this puppy's been digitally filled in. And that's all right. It's not your mother's picture book and it doesn't want to be. Instead it's goofy, and sweet, and will end up being one of those books that plague librarians in future years. Example: "Uh, hi. Do you remember a picture book, it came out in the early 2000s, and it had some ocean stuff with a shark. And there was a monster too, I think. And... and okay, I know this sounds crazy, but I think there were tigers? Does that sound right?" I don't envy those future librarians. I do, however, hope lots of kids grow to read and love this interesting English import in all its goofy little glory.

2 out of 5 stars No so great.......2006-10-24

My 3-year-old boys were confused by the narrative and I found it to be more of a nonsense book. It was difficult to handle since you read it sideways. It might be more appealing for 5 or 6-year olds, but we did not care for it. Spend you money on the Night Pirates or another book instead.

5 out of 5 stars A fun story of a fearful shark and his helpful friends.......2006-07-29

Shark is the bravest in the ocean and shouldn't be afraid of anything - but he is scared of tigers, and soon his lobster friend and the underwater community shares his concerns. A fortress isn't enough: it might take a bigger sea monster to ally their fears in this fun story of a fearful shark and his helpful friends.

      Book Description

Until just a few decades ago, very little was known about the phylogenetical old, but very successful group of sharks, rays and chimaeras (ratfish). Since then, a lot of information has become available on the 1,000 or so living species of cartilaginous fishes. Naturally, the reef dwellers among them are better known than their deep-sea relatives. Hence the focus of species selected for this unique identification guide has been on those sharks and rays inhabiting shallow water. This makes it an indispensable guide (240 species on more than 600 color photos) for diver and visitor to public aquaria. In addition to including some little known and never published species as well as fossil forms, there is also a discussion of relevant topics such as the utilization of cartilaginous fishes by man, and their threatened extinction.

      Book Description

Shark picks up where previous Adrenaline titles such as Rough Water and Deep Blue left off, with a collection focusing on man's terrifying interactions with one of the planet's most frightening beasts—an animal that arouses our most primal fears—fears that were recently brought to the surface by an outbreak of fatal attacks on this country's beaches. From novelists to sailors to oceanographers to divers, man's encounters with sharks have produced a diverse body of gripping, often inspired writing by great names in adventure literature. Along with 16 black-and-white photos, selections feature a wide range of work with an emphasis on thrills and chills, including Peter Matthiessen on the great white shark, Edward Marriott on hunting man-eaters off Nicaragua, Richard Fernicola's account of the 1916 shark attacks that inspired Peter Benchley's Jaws, and Jacques Cousteau's studies of the creatures.

5 out of 5 stars A good and varied selection.......2002-07-02

Written by those who fear them, those who study them and those who hunt them - May lets you see the shark from many perspectives. It would have been easy to just compile as many accounts of gristly attacks as possible, but May had taken a higher road. Rodney Fox explains how an attack victim forces himself back into the surf, the model for Jaws' shark-hunter Quint tells how he got into the business. The book is not just about sharks, but about the people who try to share their world. And of course, just to make sure you stay on the beach this summer, there are some dramatic accounts of attacks - not all of which were survivable. The selections are well-chosen and pretty much closed-ended so you don't feel cheated, although the excerpt of Caldwell's solo Pacific crossing may have you searching for the rest of his story. This is light and interesting reading - fast paced - perfect for summer.

      Book Description

For millions of years, a massive shark more than twice as huge as the modern-day great white shark cruised the depths of the ocean, attacking and devouring prey. Fossil remains reveal megalodon to have been more than fifty feet long, with razor-sharp teeth, each the size of a human hand, and jaws so large it could swallow prey larger than a common dolphin. It was the biggest predatory shark ever. Award-winning author Caroline Arnold takes young readers deep beneath the prehistoric sea to investigate the habits of this monstrous shark. Fluid, detailed watercolors accompany this clear and accessible account of one of the most incredible creatures to inhabit our world. Index.

The authors have written an excellent description of Megalodon, the giant shark of about 30 million years ago whom some think may still exist. Describing the species in some detail, especially its skeleton and tooth structure, the narrative truly describes an eating machine, invincible to all in the sea except another Megalodon. They authors are wrong on one point however, the Megalodon is not the largest sea predator ever. That honor belongs to Liepleurodon, a late Jurassic Plesiosaur that had thirteen foot jaws and weighed up to 150 tons. It could have snacked upon Megalodon. In fact, it did hunt sharks.
