Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2007-08-28
This book was very disappointing to me for the following reasons:
1) The exercises are too basic and boring to gain strength or give one the motivation to keep doing them. (one exercise is akin to "swimming" in air, imagining that your muscles are flexing and contracting while making swimming strokes in the air with no real resistance.)
2) Many of the exercises are martial arts based, having you pose and move in nearly embarrassing ways. (ways you wouldn't want to exercise in front of other people).
3) I was expecting this book to detail more intense exercises such as hand stand push ups, lunges, squats, pull ups, and variations of the aforementioned bodyweight exercises along with adequate technique for doing them, but the book provided very little of that content.
This is the first time that I ever purchased a book and gave it to my local library within a week of owning it, since it was so little use to me. I'm having difficulty understanding what target group this book appeals to, but obviously there are enough 3, 4, and 5 star reviews to justify some people buying the book. Buyer beware - I truly believe that if everybody who purchased this book wrote a review for it on Amazon, the average rating would be in the 2 to 3 star range.
Is this the only exercise book you need? Answer: Yes........2007-06-09
Small book, massive results.
Many people have written reviews about this book commenting on how "slim" it is on the amount of exercises it covers. The irony here is that this elegance is one of the book's strongest high points.
What must be understood is that Dynamic strength is all about getting the most from the least in your workout.
You quite simply do not need weights or an encyclopedia of exercises in order to get into excellent shape. In fact, both of these factors often discourage people (perhaps you?) from even starting a workout routine in the first place.
From the table of contents onward, you can already tell you're going to get your whole body covered from head to toe.
This book is very well illustrated and extremely clear cut in terms of explaining to you EXACTLY what you must do in order to get the results you want in the shortest amount of time possible.
Dynamic strength really does give you everything you need to know to develop strength, power, speed, and yes even raw sex appeal - but without all of the problems caused by other workout programs
In fairness, this book doesn't cover cardio (which is essential to any workout even in its most minimum form), but all you need to remember for cardio is to walk on the treadmill @ 3.5 miles an hour for 15-30 minutes a day.
This book is twelve bucks, and you won't have to buy anything else afterwards in order to perform this exceptionally potent workout which is also remarkably easy to do for even the physically weakest of individuals (like me!).
Another tip; the actual book cover that gets shipped to you looks much nicer than the one pictured above. Neat.
In closing, combining this with very basic cardio (just go for a walk!), I don't understand why you would need any other exercise book.
Buy it, and then you can toss away your other overbloated workout books ; You simply you won't need them.
Enjoy.
Great exercise overview but could have some more leg-exercises.......2007-05-27
This book is a great work that gives a nice overall exercise for your body. You get results, if you are diligent enough, and even if you use the exercises as a maintenance workout they do give you results as well ... I find some of the exercises hard to do but that is probably because I have been neglecting my muscles for too long. But combine the exercises with some martial arts training and you are in for some good results (in my case I do Taiji, but I use "dynamic strength" and tantui gongfu to improve strength as well as flexibility).
I only found two flaws in the book:
1. the leg exercises were too few. I think there could be more of those, but then again you could simply do more of the repetitions for the existing exercises.
2. there is no reference for any contact if in doubt of how to do some exercises. I searched for Harry Wong online a lot but could not find a contact of his anywhere ... I wish there was a way (DVD, forum whatever) to resolve doubts on this particular set of exercises.
Kind regards
Ilias
Very informative book on a unique training method!.......2007-03-19
Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Harry Wong's, "Dynamic Tension." I have owned this book for over 20 years and have not only used the specific exercises contained within it, but I have also adapted the techniques for several different exercises that I not only use, but also teach in my classes.
Harry starts off his book by pointing out the benefits that can be obtained through using this method compared to the more conventional method of weightlifting. Some of the benefits described are as follows:
1. Increased physical strength.
2. Improvement in your balance.
3. Improvement in your flexibility.
4. Increased body awareness.
5. The ability to heighten all five or your senses through force of concentration.
6. No injuries from lifting weights improperly.
This is followed by a very in-depth section on mental preparation and breathing. Harry stresses that you must breathe correctly not only during the performance of every exercise, but also during every moment of life. Although it may seem like a funny or somewhat absurd statement, we seem to lose our ability to breathe correctly as we get older. This is a bad habit that can be unlearned and should be in order to enhance your every day life.
The mental preparation section covers such things as;
1. Define your goals.
2. Having a positive mental attitude no matter what you are doing.
3. No matter what you are doing, have fun doing it.
4. Free your mind of negative thoughts.
5. Focus completely on your body and the exercise you are doing.
6. Have proper body posture during all exercises.
7. Concentrate on each individual body part for that particular exercise.
8. As hard as you focus during an exercise, you must totally relax after it is done.
9. Breathe properly during each and every exercise.
The following section gives you some of the basic principles that should be followed when you are warming up. Harry then gives you a brief overview of some of the basic warm-up exercises that you should perform prior to executing any of the "dynamic tension" exercises featured in this book.
Now here is the meat and potatoes of this entire book, the dynamic tension exercises, which covers 24 different exercises for everything from your neck, chest, upper body, and arms to your legs. Each exercise follows the same outline in providing you with the following information:
1. Description of the exercise.
2. Number of repetitions you should perform.
3. The count for each exercise.
4. The effects of each exercise.
5. Variations of the main exercise.
6. The martial arts benefits of each exercise.
This book then finishes up with a brief section on training. Included in this section are;
1. Exercise routines for beginner, intermediate, and advanced users.
2. How to set-up a time and place to train.
3. How to do a self-evaluation.
This book offers another great alternative to the standard forms of exercising. I have even modified these exercises and incorporated the principles behind them into my own training routine. I now utilize this type of exercise while doing my forms, practicing combinations (whether it be hand and/or foot combinations), or as a compliment to my normal weight lifting routine. I highly recommend that you buy and practice the exercises in this book. If you do, you will notice an improvement in your overall physical abilities. I personally saw results after about 6 weeks of training.
Might help some.......2007-02-23
I am exmilitary and heavily involved in martial arts. I love bodyweight conditioning and really was looking forward to reading this book. When I read the book my reaction is that you can learn more in high school gym class! This may help some people who do not exercise regularly, but for everyone else it is a waste of money.

Customer Reviews:
Inadequate subject coverage.......2007-01-19
I picked up this book to review statics and mechanics of materials and found it missing much fundamental information on the subject. No mention was made of the concept of Mohr's Circle which is useful in visualizing computation of combined stress states. The solved problems tend to be inadequate in explaining the subject. It was helpful however to have statics and mechanics of materials in a single text (a bargain buy!). Pick another text to either learn or review this subject.
Mediocraty at it's finest.......2005-02-09
The book isn't overall bad, but the explanations assume a strong comprehension of the subject. As for statics and mechanics, it is merely a few select cases, and fails to actually help. Several vital steps are omitted outright, so you'd be better off skipping this book, and searching for a question and answer bank.

Foundation Vibration Analysis Using Simple Physical Models
ASIN: 075066164X |
Book Description
Structural analysis is usually carried out by a strength-of-materials approach that allows complex 3-D structures to be modelled adequately for design needs in a single dimension. However, this approach is not extensively used in geotechnical engineering, partly because 3-D media (soil, rock) are present, but more importantly because until recently the methods necessary to carry out this form of analysis did not exist.
In the last ten years efforts at modelling practical problems in foundation analysis using a strength-of-materials approach have developed the concept of the conical bar or beam as a tool. Such cone models can be used to model a foundation in a dynamic soil-structure interaction analysis with a variation of the properties with depth.
This book develops this new approach from scratch in a readable and accessible manner. A systematic evaluation for a wide range of actual sites demonstrates sufficient engineering accuracy. A short computer program written in MATLAB and a user-friendly executable program are provided, while practical examples ensure a clear understanding of the topic.
*Simplifies complex 3-D analysis of soil-structure interaction.
*Applies strength-of-materials approach to geotechnical engineering.
*Illustrated with practical examples.
*Executable program and MATLAB program for foundation vibration analysis.

Needs more worked examples.......2007-01-05
This is the best book by these authors as it is the only one that has an accompanying software. What the audiences really need are some worked examples that they can implement themselves and check with the results in the book using the software provided by the book. However, for this to be accomplished, all the details of the problem are needed. This book can be substantially improved if more worked examples that pertain to the real world problems such as a multistorey building on a typical site or on a tunnel etc. can be included. Within its present form, I do not recommend it to people other than PhD students working in the field. Even PhD students will need other books or resources to refer to when using this book. Needs more number of worked examples!

Inner Strength.......2006-03-25
With the enormous prestige and financial rewards that come with athletic success, it's inevitable that no stone will be left unturned to learn how to develop a world champion or an Olympic gold medalist. In recent decades, attention has focused on the mental dynamics of athletic performance. The cornerstone of all these approaches has been visualization, i.e.the use of all the senses to create, simulate or re-create in one's mind, successful and effective performance. Now, we have an author capable of delivering a more expansive approach, though his chapter on visualization is quite good. Ralph Vernacchia is a PH.D who developed his approaches not solely through academia, but by combining rigorous academic study with real life experience. Mr. Vernacchia was first a high school and college miler, who later coached college cross country and track for 22 years. Following his teaching and coaching, he worked directly with some of the USA's finest coaches and experts in applied sport psychology. All this has been distilled into the remarkably lucid and practical text, "Inner Strength".
Mr. Vernacchia first presents the psychological profile of the elite athlete, ability to moderate worry, concentrate, maintain confidence, mentally prepare. Traditionally, these characteristics have then been drowned in platitudes and homilies, diluted beyond usefullness. What seperates "Inner Strength" is its ability to take these characteristics and analyze how they can be developed in the athlete. In addition, there are other chapters of particular benefit to a coach."The Values and Beliefs of Athletic Excellence" chapter is an excellent resource to create a foundational basis for a program that is not limited to a training schedule. Another chapter, "Fueling Your Dream, Understanding Athletic Motivation" is an excellent starting point for a coach despairing about what to do with his less committed performers. The book's strength is its practicality. Passages such as Three Principles of Quality Practice, Goal Attainment, Recommendations for Beating Burnout, 10 Ways to Master Pre-Performance Stress,Mental Toughness Training, offer different perspectives on standard challenges.
The field on the mental aspects of athletic performance has been dominated since its publication in 1984 by Rich Elliott's " The Competitive Edge, Mental Preparation for Distance Runners." Ralph Vernacchia's "Inner Strength" is an invaluable companion to this volume.

Customer Reviews:
The best and most comprehensive hands-on material available.......1998-08-19
This lab manual is the best I have seen. Both experienced and novice practitioners will find this book a valuable resource. Field and clinical tests are presented for each component of exercise physiology: aerobic, anaerobic, pulmonary, cardiovacular, body composition, etc. Each chapter begins with enough theoretical background to fully understand the physiological responses. The methods are detailed enough for the novice to follow, but advanced enough for the experienced technician to gain insights. The results and discussion sections provide excellent insights as well as tables of comparative and interpretive data. It is one of my most used shelf and lab references.
