Great book for those wanting to go to the next level.......2007-08-01
This book shows you some new teqniques for improving your form and strength.
The section on the foam roller has been invaluable to me.
The book sort of ends quickly....I wish there was a bit more on implementing a program.
An Innovative Work Out.......2007-04-09
Core conditioning meets endurance training in this manual geared toward endurance sports. This is a great program to work on with a friend.
Great ideas, but a coach or video is necessary.......2007-03-20
This book looks nice with its colorful pictures, charts of exercise programs, and glossy paper.
Also the idea of working one's core in order to achieve stability seems to be an important development in endurance training.
However, many of the exercises need someone as a supervisor in order to ensure that one's form is correct. Also I developed more pulled muscles after starting the program without proper supervision.
If you choose this one, take your time, but remember that with endurance sports swimming, biking, and running are the best ways to improve.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from Core Performance.......2007-01-17
First, the good. I've been a big fan of Core Performance workouts since reading the first book by Mark Verstegen. As I shifted toward more endurance sports like triathlon, I found the original book to be less helpful. Core Performance Endurance is the long-awaited combination of a core conditioning program with endurance training. On this most important point, I think Verstegen has again come through in a big way. Workouts emphasize flexibility, core strength, and injury prevention. Days are divided by emphasis on "strength", "power", "regeneration", and "rest". The idea is that, through this approach, an athlete will train efficiently and get the most results for the effort expended. What most people would call the "cardio" work is here referred to as "energy system development" or ESD. ESD work is done on most days, but it varies between slow days at less than race pace, relatively short intervals at race pace, and brief intervals at greater than race pace. The goal is to use the combination of approaches to improve the lactate threshold, the point where muscles start to "burn" and increase the level at which an athlete continuously perform without lactic acid build up. This flies in the face of "more is better" training, and it is consistent with the most recent advances in exercise physiology.
The Bad. If you are expecting a spoon-fed workout, you will be disappointed. The ESD workouts do not specify which sport is to be performed. That approach would work best for a pure runner or biker. For a multi-sport triathlete, it leaves a fair bit of the work in designing the program to the individual. For instance, should a swim be combined with a "power" day or a "strength" day? Should one alternate? How should "brick workouts" (two sports one after another, usually biking followed by running) be integrated? I like to take a hands-on approach to the details, but I can see how many might be put off by this. This book should properly be considered a foundation to an endurance exercise program, helping an athlete maximize their results and prevent injury. It should not be considered the whole program in itself.
The Ugly. An athlete progresses through stages (i.e. A, B, C) and levels (1, 2) that increase in length of time and difficulty. When ready to go to "level 3", you are instructed to go to the website, coreperformance.com. The problem? It's a site that REQUIRES A PAID MEMBERSHIP. I thought this was pretty sleazy. I don't think I would have bought the book if it had been marketed as "Two Thirds of Core Performance Endurance". When I first read the instruction to go to the website, I was pretty steamed. I was ready to dash off a 1-star review and trash the book. After I cooled down, I decided that, had there NOT been a 3rd level at all, I would have thought the workout was still pretty darn good. Judging the workout program by what is between the covers, I am reasonably happy. I decided to do my best to inform potential buyers and let them decide if it was a deal breaker or not. Consider getting the free trial offered at the site before buying the book, just to see if you think there is any value added for you.
So, for an excellent and innovative workout, I think Core Performance Endurance delivers. It would have been a much better book if it wasn't also a teaser for a subscription for an online exercise program run by the author. 4 stars.
Excellent addition to the Core Performance library........2007-01-07
I have been a fan of the CP approach since the original book. As a trail runner and mountain biker, neither of the previous titles addressed training and injury-prevention particular to my interests. Core Performance Endurance applies the already widely praised and very effective techniques of Movement Prep, Prehab, Elasticity, Power and Strength Training to the particular demands of cycling, running, swimming and other "lung" sports.
A great deal of space is devoted to "Tissue Management". The human body takes quite a pounding during endurance training but these techniques, combined with proper movement patterns and nutrition can prevent over 60% of the injuries commonly experienced by endurance athletes according to the authors. This information alone is largely ignored in other published material and easily justifies the purchase of this book.
The nutritional information provided is state-of-the-art, practical and effective. They know what an endurance athlete's body demands and dispell many prevalent myths that are ineffective at best and potentially dangerous at worst.
The material is clearly presented (they've learned what works from feedback regarding the previous books) and there are plenty of new tricks for those already familiar with the CP methodology. As a program it is very flexible and realistic for those who already have to squeeze in rides, runs and swims in-between work and family responsibilities. Many other books on this subject assume you've got endless time and opportunity to work on increasing your VO2 Max.
Other reviews have mentioned needing to purchase additional equipment to do some of the exercises. While this is true, all of the workouts can be performed with a minimum of equipment, most of which would fit in a bike bag or small duffel. This is a cutting-edge program and the investment needed for the additional equipment is modest compared with the return. Additionally, Mark Verstegen suggests a number of low or no cost alternatives should you not wish to purchase more equipment.
Whether you're gunning for a PR in the Leadville 100 or running your first 5k, Core Performance Endurance has got you covered. Highly recommended.

Athletes of all kinds will learn the importance of diet for their sport. There are also sample menus to help you learn how to plan your meals.
Outstanding guide to sports nutrition.......2007-02-04
Though I've been an Amazon customer for years, this is the first book that's really compelled me to sit down and write a review.
Ryan's book is extraordinary, both in its depth and breadth of knowledge for many types of endurance sports. Though I'm just starting out, I found the information easy to understand and very helpful. What I'm left with after reading this book is a real feel of the importance of diet for endurance athletes (I'm a marathoner) and a very accessible reference for when I need to go back and refer to some particular question about food.
A great tool for anyone to help you do better in your sport.......2006-11-10
This is a great book that is easy to follow. It gives you basic information in regards to sports nutrition and has specific nutrition plans based on the sport you are in training. It even has some sample menus to help you plan meals. I highly reccomend it for anyone that is going to train or is in training for a marathon, long distance cycling event, triathlon, etc.
I'm vegetarian and this book has helpful for vegetarian nutrition needs as well in regards to endruance sports programs.

Customer Reviews:
Right on the money.......2007-07-18
Suzanne knows her stuff. I've been an ultrarunner and endurance athlete for nearly 25 years and I find Suzanne's wisdom and advice both on target and incredibly helpful. In fact, as I get older, which I am, her advice is seemingly even more relevant. Following her advice on everything from hydration to nutrition to stretching has been vital to me being able to keep doing what I love to do. The bottom line is that proper nutrition is key to optimal performance and the information in this book can ensure you're geting both.
Excellent Sports Nutrition Resource.......2007-05-07
This is a serious sports nutrition book for serious athletes. It is packed with information for the endurance athlete or those coaching endurance/elite athletes. In addition to providing a complete nutritional overview for the elite athlete, Endurance Sports touches on other related subjects such as hydration, the effectiveness of supplements, food intolerances, eating disorders and even optimal eating for the vegetarian athlete. As a nutrition writer, this book is an integral part of my reference library.
Secret Weapon.......2007-04-18
I am in my mid-40s and have toyed with the idea of doing a triathlon for quite some time. Somehow, when I would begin to really get the training ramped up, I would run in to a problem. I believe that I was probably bringing on the problems with less than ideal nutrition. So, though I harbor no aspirations of being a serious athlete, I have found that nutrition is an important--and often overlooked--aspect for even recreational athletes like me. Using the information in this book is allowing me to push my training farther than I ever have before and will get me across the finish line for my first triathlon sometime this summer.
An awesome resource for any endurance athlete.......2007-04-05
I'm an aging triathlete, who still enjoys competing but now has to balance my obsession with family, kids, job etc. As I can no longer log huge training hours, I've had to look for other (smarter?) ways to maintain/improve my performance. Awhile back I borrowed a copy of this book from a friend, and found it massively valuable. It has truly changed the way I train and compete, and has had a huge impact on my performance. When the new edition came out I returned my borrowed (and now excessively dog-eared) copy and bought the latest version. It's actually much improved from the original version. Most of the content is still the same (and just as valuable), but the organization is much improved and I've found it's easier to get sport-specific info without wading through the extra stuff. I'd strongly recommend this book to any athlete (serious or casual) who wants to better enjoy their sport and/or improve their performance.
The Right Stuff for Endurance Athletes .......2007-04-04
I practice & teach yoga. Sometimes I take nice long hikes. I'm also a dietitian. But until I read Suzanne Eberle's 2nd edition of Endurance Sports Nutrition, I never fully appreciated just how different life is, nutritionally, for endurance athletes. And who could better tell us about it and how to eat to maximize training, racing, recovery and good health than an elite runner and sports dietitian?
If you are a long distance runner, biker, triathelete or participate in another seemingly impossible endurance challenge, please do your loved ones a favor and pick up this book. It is highly detailed and filled with personal stories from elite athletes on how they balance the body-punishing aspects of their sports with conscious nutrition to refuel, rebuild and sustain.
Any athlete will find something here that will bolster their success.
- Annie Kay MS RD RYT, Author, Every Bite Is Divine

Customer Reviews:
Too much of an Infomercial.......2007-04-01
Although this book contains good information, it is tinted by the fact that one of the authors, Robert Portman, sells sports nutrition products. As a result, the impression is that the goal of this book is to prove that Mr. Portman's products are the best. Maybe they are but then, it would be more credible if the book was written by independent researchers.
Fills an Important Need.......2004-06-11
There are many books about sports nutrition, but very few that focus specifically on nutrition during exercise. In fact, to my knowledge there were none until this one came along. The Performance Zone, written by exercise physiologist John Ivy, Ph.D., and biochemist Robert Portman, Ph.D., fills a major informational void by providing athletes in all sports with detailed guidelines for fueling their bodies during training and competition.
The authors define "the performance zone" as a time interval that begins 30 minutes before exercise and ends 15 minutes after exercise. "Science clearly shows that the right combination of fluid and nutrients consumed within the Performance Zone will help you improve your athletic performance far more than the latest high-tech equipment or training device," they write. Ivy and Portman poured through hundreds of published research studies to determine exactly what and how much athletes should consume within this time period and on what kind of schedule.
Before they get to the practical recommendations, which make up the bulk of the book, the authors provide some interesting background on what happens inside the body during exercise and how "nutritional intervention" can help athletes prepare their body for activity, achieve optimal performance during the workout or competition, and recover quickly and thoroughly afterward.
Not surprisingly, Ivy and Portman conclude that a well-formulated sports drink is far superior to water or any other "natural" food or drink for use immediately before and during exercise. In Chapter 6, they attack the myth that all sports drinks are the same, pointing to significant differences in the formulations of various popular brands and explaining what they feel - based on the available science - is the ideal formulation.
The most useful part of The Performance Zone, Chapter 6 also shows how a simple calculation can show athletes exactly how much sports drink to consume based on their individual weight and activity. Endurance athletes in particular will find this calculation helpful, I believe. Triathletes and other endurance athletes are always struggling to find the right balance of fluid and carbohydrate intake. Ivy and Portman make the simple point - which, amazingly, I had never before read or heard anywhere else - that water loss and carbohydrate burning almost always occur in a fixed proportion during exercise: about 4.5 ounces per 100 calories. Nuggets like this really take the guesswork out of creating the proper fueling schedule.
The subject of post-exercise nutrition receives a similar treatment. The authors weigh the advantages and disadvantages of various recovery nutrition strategies ranging from "real food" to powdered drink mixes. Another simple formula allows athletes to calculate exactly how much water, carbohydrate, and protein they should consume within the post-exercise segment of the performance zone.
Nutritional needs and challenges and fueling opportunities vary from sport to sport. Understanding this fact, Ivy and Portman include a chapter in which a cavalcade of well-known professional athletes and coaches provide tips specific to each of a dozen sports. Among the contributors are mountain biking world champion Alison Dunlap and running coach Jeff Galloway. Parents and coaches of young athletes will probably get a lot out of this chapter. The final chapter, which discusses the drawbacks and dangers of a wide range of nutritional supplements and performance enhancing drugs, should be required reading for this audience, and for young athletes themselves.
All in all, The Performance Zone is an excellent resource with great practical value for athletes in all sports. As the authors point out in the book's first chapter, most athletes simply are not doing what the latest science suggests they out to be doing in terms of fueling their bodies before, during, and immediately following exercise. The Performance Zone promises to correct this problem one athlete at a time.
sound nutrition information.......2004-05-29
New sports nutrition books seem to show up every week, so it is easy to be skeptical of each new one. But Ivy and Portman have put together one terrific book that unites nutrition and performance with sound (but not overwhelming) science giving very practical advice on the use of nutrition to improve exercise performance. Put both this and their companion book, Nutrient Timing, on the bookshelf and forget all those other books. No matter if you are a lifter or a runner, these will be all you need.

Beginner or Elite - Great book on Endurance Eating.......2004-03-06
The book is easy to read and offers great advice on nutrition. The book is not exclusively for the endurance athletes but can be use by anyone.
Excellent resource.......2004-03-04
Ellen's book is the most concise, clear, and thorough explanation for nutrition for endurance athletes that I have found to date. Her writing style is easy to read and comprehend, her information is well supported, and her nutritional approach is realistic for work-a-day athletes. As a back-of-the-pack to midpack triathlete, I was able to come away from reading this book with a better understanding of how nutrition impacts performance and come away better armed for the upcoming triathlon season.
One of the best nutrition references available.......2004-03-04
Thru Ellen's insight, guidance and words, ordinary people have another tool to accomplish extraordinary things. To complete long distance events, nutrition can make or break you. I have run ultramarathons, competed in Ironman triathlons, and ventured into other fun things like the Mojave 250 mile Death Race. I trust Ellen's words and guidance in fueling my body to go the distance.
Very solid contribution to endurance athletics nutrition.......2004-03-04
This book provides a simple, holistic, easy-to-use set of guidelines regarding appropriate nutrition for endurance athletics. It's a subject that needn't be over-complicated to get right. Nutrition is right up there with religion and politics for evoking fervent reactions, but if you want to skip the fads, fringe plans, and diets-of-the-week, this is an excellent tome to eat by.
WOnderful refernce.......2004-03-04
Couldn't compete at the Ironman Level of triathln without this in my library. if you are going to go long you have to read this book.

Eating for Endurance.......2006-09-03
In my 20-plus years of working with athletes, the key part of my methodology has been to provide information to help individuals understand how to find the approach that works the best for him or her, as opposed to prescribing a preconceived diet and list of supplements, and inferring all athletes must follow these blindly. I teach each athlete to match his or her specific needs and reap the benefits, whch include increased endurnce and performance, longer athletic lifespan and signficant improvements in overall health, includung the elimination of injuries.
This book describes this process.
Here's how you can get the most out of this book. First, understand the basic chapters - those that provide a general overview and philosophy of my eating program. These are outlined in chapters 1-4. You will find ths approach very different from most books, diets and nutritional advice. I'm asking that you keep an open mind and take responsibility for your own health and fitness, rather than rely on others to give you the magic pill, which of course does not exist.
Next, understand the basic information on diet and nutrition - general knowledge almost everyone needs to know and follow. This is found in chapters 5-13. These chapters help lay the groundwork that will enable you to more effectively take the necessary steps to individualize your diet and nutrition. Once you get to chapters 14-18, you'll have an easier time individualizing your diet and nutritional state. Chapters 19-24 provide ideas on eating - not just what, but how and when, along with tips how to obtain the highest quality food and get the most out of it. This part also includes a chapter on the next generation of endurance athletes - our children.
Because this is an individualized approach, it is always evolving. It's not a cookbook program you blindly follow without any thought, but rather one that will become your lifestyle. You'll learn to be more intuitive and instinctual regarding eating. As the seasons pass, as your priorities are modified, or as your goals change, you'll be able to easily adjust your diet as necessary to match your unique needs. In the process you may also be able to help family and friends get more fit and healthy. - Dr. Phil Maffetone

Customer Reviews:
This is a great book for all types of endurance athletes.......2002-04-12
This is a great book for those of you out there that feel a little lost in the world of triathlon training. Stop reading all those contradictory articles and just get this book. Dead serious. To get the full effect of the book you must spend hours studying it. But your racing and training will improve dramatically. The author covers everything from speed, endurance, form, the whole nine yards.
The most useful Multi-Sport info in one book I've found.......2002-03-09
This is not a "hoo-rah" story of a bunch of pro's achievements, but an in depth discussion of endurance in general. There's so much information, that you could pick and choose only 1/3 of it and the book's still a bargain. I bought it when I first started doing short triathalons for fun and fitness, so I didn't use all of the serious training charts. What I did use the most was the discussion on running technique and nutrition's effect on endurance. The swimming and biking technique sections were also helpful. You don't have to be a triathalete to benefit from this book. It applies to hiking, climbing, biking, or any endurance activity.
Whew! - analytical overload!.......2000-11-15
Progression charts, milage graphs, timing in minutes and seconds, pace guides; whatever happened to just "doing it?" Marc Evans is certainly into it but I can't imagine how he keeps up with anyone he coaches, considering all the analysis that has to be done to use his method (would a three-sport athlete have time to even look at these charts?). Maybe it due to computers or maybe the rise of internet coaching, but analytical coaching seems to be the rage these days. If that's what you want, this is the book to get; Evans will have you dialed in and on a schedule that will be the envy of those who make Boeing 747's for a living! Just remember to have some fun in the process, OK? By the way, outside of scheduling charts actual sport-specific training advice is fairly skimpy and generalized. You'd do better to get specific sport information from sport-specific books. Evans would probably agree that a face-to-face coach is better for that sort of thing anyway. As for me, I'll take the advice of one great cyclist: "Ride lots."
Good on Technique.......2000-05-14
This is a good source of endurance info. It has good information of skill and technique development. Marc Evans takes more of a 'whole athlete' view than some other endurance writers. There are better books on triathlon training, but this is a well balanced text on endurance.
Marc Evans Knows His Stuff.......1998-08-08
Endurance Athlete's Edge by Marc Evans is the best book on the market for anyone who is interested in this form of training. Mutisports are one, if not the most challenging activities the body will ever endure. Marc Evans gives you the information you need to improve your knowledge in helping you last in this sport. If you want to win or just finish an Ironman race, you must get this book. Marc Evans Knows His Stuff, and is a leader on this subject. Thank you Mr. Evans for helping us all train right!

Vegan + Sports
Vegan Nutrition and Endurance Sports
A vegan diet (refraining from the consumption of all animal products) is the optimal nourishment for personal well-being, vitality and health, as well as the basis for top performance in endurance sports. In clear and concise language, Arnold Wiegand describes a realistic method for making a healthy vegan diet second nature, and combining it with endurance athletics. Arnold Wiegand has participated in highly competitive endurance races, including marathon swims - 16,5 mile, the 101 mile run, and the Ironman-Triathlon, to name just a few. He has shown that purely vegan nourishment and endurance sports can be combined with great success. This book makes use of detailed background information and personal experience, and will serve as a guide for those who are concerned with such questions as: "What advantages can a vegan diet and endurance sports afford me?", "Is a vegan diet compatible with endurance sports?", "What are the necessary steps to achieve my fitness goals, and what do I have to pay the most attention to?" This book includes a wealth of medical knowledge, training suggestions, and practical tips drawn from the experiences of a professional endurance athlete.

Worst Vegan Book I've Ever Read.......2006-10-12
I bought this book in hopes of discovering a better grasp of what foods and combination of foods I should eat, as a vegan, while training for the LA Marathon. Instead, this is like reading someone's personal diary with absolutely no valuable information whatsoever. The few hopes he offers as far as a menu plan or even a recipe he leaves out of the book and says there will be a recipe book published later. So, basically, he wrote this book to try to sell a different book yet to be published. I have been vegan for only a year and yet my knowledge far surpasses his. In fact, a lot of his advice is bad, unhealthy, and ignorant. For example, he claims that taking in absolutely no nutrition before a long training session is a good thing and encourages it in a rather braggert sort of way. Obviously this guy knows nothing about body metabolism or function. This book is basically from the perspective of someone saying "hey, I'm over 40. I gave up meat. I do endurance sports. Ain't I cool?" Don't waste your money or time. It is a very frustrating, empty read. Brendan Brazier's book is a bit better if you're desperate for food ideas while training for endurance sports. At least with his book you get some menu plans and recipes.
