Product Description
The author applies a no-nonsense approach to dieting, exercising, disease treating, and other aspects of everyday life. Our looks, longevity, as well as our physical and mental conditions result from the way we eat, breathe, and take care of all our physical and psychological needs. The question is not limited to nutrition only, as is the case of dieting programs.
Customer Reviews:
Rare find .......2007-09-06
I will certainly keep this book handy and use it frequently treating myself and my family. It's a book I've been waiting for a long time to read. Priceless information. Simple. Easy to follow. And the best thing of all, it costs you almost nothing! As one of the readers noted, this book can possibly make dieting industry die out, and many pharmaceutical companies with raised by them doctors would be out of business, if only people allowed themselves be wise enough to use very simple advice from this book. My mother, who is RN, almost never turned to prescription medications to treat my illnesses, on the contrary, many of her treatments were from holistic medicine, and some of them I find in this book. Wonderful book, amazing, wise! Yes, I can't agree with part on reading character by eye colour and horoscope, but let it be a fun reading and not a scientific statement. Beside that, this book is extremely valuable.
Logic,...Logic,....Logic.......2007-09-01
If you are proactive in maintaining your health this book is absolutley for you along with Cure the Incurable. If you are not proactive I would not suggest this book for you
Who wants to live 150 years???....not me, but, that is not the point. The point is to show us how our body functions and the common sense principles to our health...its call biology, plain and simple
My daughter has been going to various doctors for IBS, bloating, pre-diabetic issues, headaches, irritabilty, etc.
I do understand that our body is one biological system and that it all works together, but, many people do not believe that, especially my daughter
Well, needless to say, I gave this book to her to read and understand....
and finally a light bulb went on
She found out that she had human parasites (almost all of us have them) which no doctor that she went to checked on that
When you read this book, you should leave with a concept of how the body works and what it needs...
Read it as it might not only help you but someone close to you
Simple, Sensible and Extremely Effective.......2007-06-02
This is the ultimate holistic living guide. From correct breathing, through taking care of your back, to proper food combination, the author provides natural recipes for everyday living. The words are direct, awakening and motivating, causing you to start taking care of yourself.
Very important for me was chapter six - Complete Body Cleansing. The liver cleansing is really very rejuvenating. You have to prepare for the procedure a few days earlier by appropriately changing your diet. The liver cleansing itself takes two full days of total concentration on your own body. It is not pleasant but it is very rewarding. After it was over I felt like a newborn. Somehow it also pushed me to improve my eating habits.
Also very good is the chapter about obesity. Without complicating the matter, like many other authors tend to do, the author very effectively deals with the subject in one short chapter. He explains the reasons behind ineffectiveness of most popular dieting programs and suggests simple ways for dealing with the most common habits that lead us to gaining weight. PAINLESS AND EFFECTIVE!
Very helpful is also the chart on proper food combination. Applying the simple rules from the chart after my liver cleansing keeps me feel youthful and energetic, and I keep losing weight week after week.
No one before has motivated me so well. Just follow the simple advice for a month or two and you will see the difference. You will feel better and you will look better. What else do you need?
Another great book that I highly recommend for all those wanting to live healthy life and stay away from prescription drugs is Prescription for Nutritional Healing.
Sometimes you just have to laugh.......2007-04-08
How the author manages to delete all the negative reviews so quickly month after month is quite impressive. I remember writing a negative review a couple of years ago. Actually I wrote two and both disappeared. Now I return and the same battle is waging. For info on this guy check out the discussion section below.
Your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.......2007-02-10
I am usually very skeptical about various claims that can be found in the books written by many "self-healers" and other gurus. The author however, does not over-promise in any chapter of his book, in spite of its catchy title.
It is a good compilation of safe-and-sound recommendations for longevity and healthy living. I did smile at some of them (walking bare footed, etc.) but even if I do not believe in their direct benefits, they might still bring about good results for those who do believe (placebo effect). In any case, none of the recommendations can in any way be harmful as most of the remedies contain products used by many of us on a daily basis.
Other advice, like proper food combination, periodic fasting, taking hot and cold baths, using sauna, drinking pure mineral water, taking daily walks, etc, are just common sense and indeed very beneficial for our mental and physical conditions. By the way, the author clearly states that he is not a medical doctor himself but that he just compiled the wisdom of many nations - from Europe, via Tibet, to old China. As a result, some of the ingredients suggested in certain remedies can be difficult to obtain in North America. For example kefir. It is a dairy product, with well known health benefits, that is very popular in Europe but hardly ever obtainable in the US, except for specialty organic food shops. [...]
There are a few Apendices at the end of the book. Some of them are too much on the side of "New Age" and does not really fit my analitical mind. However it might be of some interest for those who like to believe in astrology, Horoscope etc. I think it is fine to read it as an interesting trivia, especially since this is presented in the Apendices -- clearly outside of the main body of the book.
The author was educated as a biologist and chemist, but he devoted his life to studying human body and he is a well known authority on healthy living documented by the fact the he was the head of Center of Health Sciences in Moscow. I do believe that this book will be very beneficial for many people, especially for those jumping from one fad diet to another. As the author rightly pointed out - your health and wellbeing are in your own hands.
Many methods and remedies suggested by the author are indeed valuable and effective. They are presented for the reader to explore. Please use them wisely! On the scale of 0 to 10 I give the book 9 points. Highly recommended reading!

Interesting info........2006-06-26
Typical of diet books with lots of info that you hurry through to get to the meat of it. Pun not intended. Well researched and good diet to follow to get started on the program.
you can get better info for free on the net.......2006-06-19
this book confused me. why did it need to be so mathmatically challenging? i don't want formulas and percentages.....just tell me what to do and how to do it. this plan is a good one, and i found better, easier to follow info on the net for free. i'm using maybe 5 pages out of this entire book to supplement the info i found. find it on clearance or borrow someone's copy.
excellent change.......2005-08-23
I found the book very informative. The combination of nutrition, exercise and spirituality all tied together made you seem like there is a purpose for change. Making a few of the moderate changes in this book resulted in positive results. Much to my surprise I was actaully eating more but lost weight.

sleeping sounder and clarity when awake. Wow where will I be in six months...?
Again Thank You for putting into this book the most valuable healing information for anyone determined to change their health picture!
Perseverence may come with these delicious recipes.
A Life-Changing Book.......2004-02-13
This is a great book! The recipes are simply delicious--I never have been able to bake bread before and have it turn out, but the whole wheat recipe here comes out beautifully and it's delicious. Some of my favorite recipes are the banana barley loaf, the lentil loaf, the oat pancakes and topping (I used apples rather than pears for the topping), the corn bread, the lentil soup, the marina and pasta sauces, the Indian Subzi. There are too many to name them all! And too, I use the advice in this book to convert older favorite recipes with unhealthy ingredients to heart healthy yet delicious alternatives. I love the approach too, with a focus on not only nutrition and fitness but also emotional and spiritual health-- I found that once I was used to not adding salt to food, and consistently followed the advice in the book, I no longer craved foods as I used to, achieved my target weight, and felt better than I ever had in my life. I have never had heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, but all are very prevalent in my family. I wanted to do something to lose weight and to keep myself fit. I think the advice in this book is for everyone, those with heart disease and those who want to keep their hearts healthy. Heal Your Heart is an awesome book that can change your life.

Customer Reviews:
Beyond Rice Cakes.......2007-07-18
A wonderful book for all and especially for people who live alone both young and old. Disregard Maltin's "young person" focus. Regardless of your age you will enjoy reading the book and using the recipes. Maltin writes with a practical and humorous view of reality. There are a lot of great tips and good advice in addition to the recipes. I am a senior citizen who lives alone who has cooked a lot of complicated recipes--this is one of my favorite books.
This cookbook is "OK".......2007-03-13
This cookbook does have a lot of good information in it which is nice...and it has few recipes which I will probably try to use.... but I wouldn't say that it will be the one with the most bent pages. :)
I'm only 23, so I would imagine that I will qualify as a "young person", but some of the recipes were so basic that they probably shouldn't have been included. However, that being said, there are a few that are worthy of being included in our "rotation".
I like the fact that she is increasing Celiac awareness and that she provides bonus information. I just wish that there were some juicier recipes in there!
Very Basic.......2007-02-06
I found the book to be very basic yet informative. It had some good recipes, but I guess I was expecting a little more.
Beyond rice Cakes.......2007-01-11
Great cook book for those newly diognosed with Celiac Disease, easy recipes, stuff everyone will eat.
Great book, Great author.......2006-10-11
Beyond Rice Cakes is a fantastic book, and I don't even have Celiac Disease. The recipes are easy to make and taste great too. Maltin's positive attitude about being diagnosed with the disease, and her proactive approach to treating it and helping others to treat it is incredible. Her humerous story telling in this book makes it an even better read and should help convince anyone with the disease that it's best to laugh about it...and eat some fantastic gluten-free foods in the meantime.

Great product.......2007-06-01
Item arrived incondition stated. PLeased with transaction as well as content of item.
WARNING--NIce Covers but Nothing Inside.......2007-04-21
Suffering a severe flareup of ulcerative colitis makes one a desperate person. There's enough conflicting diet information on the internet and from the medical machine to completely confuse anyone. When I encountered this book's promotions, I immediately ordered it from Amazon and waited anxiously for it's arrival. At the same time I began to look at the "low residue diet". Information on low residue diets is very limited and searching the web is the best way to find it. I applied the princicples of this diet to my food intake while awaiting the arrival of my new cookbook. I began to feel better within a day. When my order arrived, I looked through the book, closed it, put it back in the box and returned it.
The book contains no information on any of it's recipes' nutritional or fiber content. Information on fiber content and nutrition are some of the most important things that a sufferer or ulcerative colitis needs. Some of the recipes far excede the recommended fiber content and could make things much worse.
If you are having problems with ulcerative colitis, buy some rice, apple juice, herbal tea and canned chicken or fish. Do your research and go from there.
ok.......2007-01-09
The recepies were not geared towards a diet good for ulcerative colitis. It was more like a regular cook book.
Very disappointed with quality & quantity.......2005-02-22
I expected more from two people who claimed they went to a culinary school and one of them had colitis. The recipes seemed like they just substituted rice or soy milk for regular milk.
I will try a few of the recipes but most were so basic that I was sad to have spent the money on the 'little' book.
disappointing.......2000-12-08
it's really small and of poor quality. The recipes are very basic. How many times do they have to write how to make BREAD? (with one ingredient different in the recipes?)
Well you could use this if you have never cooked , it has some basic recipes, but for colitis...gna.

Book Description
Eating Spring Rice is the first major ethnographic study of HIV/AIDS in China. Drawing on more than a decade of ethnographic research (1995-2005), primarily in Yunnan Province, Sandra Teresa Hyde chronicles the rise of the HIV epidemic from the years prior to the Chinese government's acknowledgement of this public health crisis to post-reform thinking about infectious-disease management. Hyde combines innovative public health research with in-depth ethnography on the ways minorities and sex workers were marked as the principle carriers of HIV, often despite evidence to the contrary.
Hyde approaches HIV/AIDS as a study of the conceptualization and the circulation of a disease across boundaries that requires different kinds of anthropological thinking and methods. She focuses on "everyday AIDS practices" to examine the links between the material and the discursive representations of HIV/AIDS. This book illustrates how representatives of the Chinese government singled out a former kingdom of Thailand, Sipsongpanna, and its indigenous ethnic group, the Tai-Lüe, as carriers of HIV due to a history of prejudice and stigma, and to the geography of the borderlands. Hyde poses questions about the cultural politics of epidemics, state-society relations, Han and non-Han ethnic dynamics, and the rise of an AIDS public health bureaucracy in the post-reform era.

A surprise hit.......2004-07-15
I read this book because a friend of mine had died of AIDS.There were so many things I learned, but most importantly I wept. This book relived for me the courage of all those infected and affected by this pandemic. A must read!
A MUST READ.......2004-07-14
This book is fabulous. It should be a mandatory read for anyone involved in AIDS work. Doctors, social workers, nurses and anyone who knows someone afflicted with AIDS should have this in their library.
I cannot say enough about it, but rest assured this is a book you will recommend to your colleagues and everyone will have something to take away from this essential book.
Wonderful Book.......2003-10-08
This book is wonderful! You can tell the authors / editors are passionate about what they do, extremely knowlegable in their field and write accordingly. This is a MUST for anyone, clinician or otherwise, who wants a well researched report on the current state of affairs relating to AIDS social work or even the layman who desires to broaden their knowledge of this disease which affects so many.
I was moved to tears- this is a necessary book.

Customer Reviews:
the best book for SIDS survivors.......2007-10-16
This by far, was an amazing SIDS book. It's been almost a year since we lost Jacob to SIDS, and I still go back and re-read the book. It's so hard to find people that could relate to your SIDS loss, and this book is full of them. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this book.
I've been through this loss. Chances are, if you're searching for this book, you have just experienced your own loss. READ this book.
A must have.......2007-07-13
If you have lost a child to sids then you must get this. It was recommended to me and it has been a valuable tool. It is fully of case studies, answers to questions you wont have thought of and usefull information on how to try and get through this.
Helpful Resource For Grieving Families .......2007-01-03
Horchler and Rice give comfort, encouragement, and insight to the issues that surround Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Infant Death. Families who have suffered the devastating loss of a baby will find many questions they may have answered among the pages. The topics covered bring a sense of normalcy and healing to the bereaved as the authors guide the reader down the path of surviving their loss and again finding joy in living.
A Life Saver.......2001-11-12
The SIDS Survival Guide was my beacon of light during the darkest part of my life. My son, Dominic, passed away from SIDS on April 10, 2001, at only 4 1/2 months young. I began to reach out and search for all the information I could find on SIDS, drinking it all in by the bucket. A few months after he died, I found "The SIDS Survival Guide", and am so incredibly thankful. There was so much information, so many stories so like my own. I shed many tears while reading it for the first time, and even now, when I go back to read sections, I still cry. I am now expecting our second child in June 2002, and am scared to death. But knowing that I am informed about SIDS is somewhat of a comfort to me; in a way, I am as prepared as I can ever be. I would recommend this book to anyone expecting a child, who has a young baby, or knows someone who is or does.
Sanity check.......2001-02-17
My husband and I lost our son to SIDS in September of 2000. Our souls have been torn. The grieving process over his death has been draining. I recall little over the past 4+ months since his death. The one thing I do recall is thinking I was going crazy. I had wished their was another SIDS survivor I could speak with. Someone who could possibly relate to what my husband and I were going through. Someone who could understand our emotions. I searched under the keyword SIDS and found this book. I have not read the book in its entirety. I have read the sections I have needed at the particular times in my grieving. This book has helped me confirm that I am not going crazy. What I am feeling, though very personal, is normal. I feel this book is a neccesity for any parent who has to suffer this terrible tragedy. I have placed an order of these books in my babies memory to send to my state SIDS Coordinator in hopes that other parents may find comfort in its contents. Thank you Joani and Robin.
