5 out of 5 stars Great overview book.......2007-06-09

This book is great if you're a beginner gardener, and want just one book to sit down and read that covers all aspects of gardening. You'll want to go on an buy other books that go into more detail on specific topics, but this is a great place to start, and one to keep on the shelf.
It is presented as a gardening book should be - a large hardcover with lots of glossy colour photographs.
Chapters are:
1) Growing you own
2) Getting Started
3) Garden Tools & Equipment
4) Improving the soil
5) Laying out the Garden
6) Planting the Garden
7) Caring for the Garden
8) Coping with Garden Problems

5 out of 5 stars Should be called the Coffee Table Encyclopedia of Gardening.......2007-03-10

I am so impressed with this big, beautiful book! The photos are inspiring, and the technical aspects are thoroughly covered. I love the historic background of each vegetable and herb.
I think there is literally everything I ever needed to know about vegetable gardening from seed germination, through care and feeding, to harvest. Detailed charts outline fertilizer, pests, water, soil conditions, and planting and harvest times.

I keep it on my coffee table and flip through it daily just to enjoy the photos and learn some new fact.

You will not be disappointed with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Gardners Dictionary.......2006-10-31

I am a new gardener and this book has helped so much! I look everything up in it. RIght down to problems with plant to how much water each plant gets. It has a guide to all plants and great pictures. Also has tips for gardening.

5 out of 5 stars Well Organized, Comprehensive, Excellent Layout.......2002-08-14

Burpee's "The Complete Vegetable and Herb Gardener: A Guide to Growing Your Garden Organically" is fantastic. In addition to what Burpee lists on the back cover of what is inside the book, there are also many easy-reading tables that contain excellent information such as the vitamin(s) that each vegetable contains, different cultivars, plant PH needs, watering needs per week, crop yields, etc. Many interesting tidbits.

The layout is so wonderful, one does not feel overwhelmed with all of the information that is in the book!

5 out of 5 stars Vegatable Gardening Made Really Easy.......2001-11-02

Very similar in content and structure to Ortho's Complete Guide to Vegtables. The difference comes in the experience the writer has growing and maitaining the various plants. I find using both books gives different perspectives for growing and caretaking of plants but conatins the same basic information. For instance the Ortho book has better Garden Setup and maintenance data, and raw data on the various gardening aspects like fertilizer and pest eradiction. The Burpee book focuses on plant and cultivar details a little better. The book is filled with plenty high quality pictures of plants and their fruits using multiple pictures of various cultivars within plant families.
The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.
I consistently flip between both this book and Ortho's book. I find using them in this manner makes the information extracted complimentary and thorough.

4 out of 5 stars found to be useful.......2007-10-03

this book was well organized in its presentation of problems for each type of plant covered. set in A-Z format of common plant names (though Latin names are used as well), the editors (Barbara Ellis, and Fern Bradley)give several ways to combat garden issues from an organic methodology. most of the ways of working with organics that they outline are not high cost, but are high maintainence as is all organic gardening, if done right.

the book also covers some common insects a gardener would see and if they are beneficial or not and how to work with the beneficials (what to plant to attract, etc) and to control the "bad bugs". they also outline some diseases and how to fight those with organic methods. then they touch on other ways to fight garden pests (cultural, physical, and biological contols). they also talk about different organic dusts and sprays and how to use them effectively.

5 out of 5 stars Organic gardener's bible.......2007-10-02

If you want to garden organically and can only afford to buy one book on insect and disease control -- this is it! I go for this book first whenever I think I have problems in the garden, in the landscape, in the orchard. It's an all around great reference book!

5 out of 5 stars The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control.......2007-07-15

Book Description

Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life — not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as other forms of life. But there is an alternative to this vicious circle: to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web — the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions create a nurturing environment for plants. By eschewing jargon and overly technical language, the authors make the benefits of cultivating the soil food web available to a wide audience, from devotees of organic gardening techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants without resorting to chemicals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - have the best yard on the block with half the work!.......2007-10-10

This book is awesome for explaining the why behind organic gardening. It also tells you how to have an almost fertilizer-free lawn using microbes in compost tea and compost, and how to encourage the right kind of microbes for your various plants through the use of different kinds of mulches. It explains each step in the soil food web, how to identify any holes in your soil food web, and different steps you can take to improve the health and variety of microbes in your yard and garden. I was surprised at some common gardening practices which are actually bad for your yard!!! It was an enjoyable read with lots of interesting pictures, and made absolutely clear the importance of healthy soil when growing plants, and how to achieve it naturally and easily.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-09-30

I am a very seasoned gardener already using many of the techniques proposed by the book. However my approach was based on intuition and experience. This book explains how all fits together in a simpler and more accessible way than the Soil Microbiology treatises.
Strongly recommended for gardeners of all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Learned a great deal about improving my gardens.......2007-09-18

I has astonished at how much new information this book covered. Just the section on new oxygen activated compost teas was worth the price of the book. Highly recommended. I am starting to use the teas and can't wait to see the results.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who cares about the environment.......2007-07-07

As other reviewers noted this is a 5+ star book. I agree w/ their comments and really have little more to add. I think the authors are passionate about their subject, not only as shown by the book's interesting content, but the presentation of this book. They choose high quality paper (should it have been recycled???) with beautiful photos of the soil's hidden helpers. I read it in an afternoon as one would a novel and highlighted pssages as I went along for easy reference.

4 out of 5 stars Easy reading and informative.......2007-06-27

I had to get this book for a botanical class I am taking. As I began to read this book I am grateful that this is the recommended text. It is pleasant to read and informative.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise, but useful.......2007-06-09

This is a relatively small book at about 150 pages, but it manages to pack in a lot of information very concisely. It's beautifully illustrated with color photographs and drawings.

The first 2/3 of the book includes general herb gardening background and use of herbs tips: how to choose plants, pick the location, general design principles, planting instructions (including some nice tips on extending the growing season), propagation, harvesting, drying, pests and diseases, etc.

It also includes suggestions for common culinary uses, such as salads, herbal vinegars, flavored oils, teas, jellies, honeys, and breads. These are not an extensive set of recipes, but more like master recipes with some suggestions for how you can mix them up with variations.

The book also includes suggestions and recipes for health and beauty products (again, not an extensive collection). This section includes potpourri, sachets, bouquets, dried arrangements and insect repellents.

The last 1/3 of the book has individual pages on about 50 different herbs. These individual pages tell you a description, how to grow, harvesting instructions, suggested uses, tips, cultivars, and also includes a quick key on the level of care required (using a 4 glove rating system), if it attracts beneficial insects, whether or not it is ornamental, whether or not it can be grown in a container, how much yield you can expect to get and how easy it is to grow.

The back of the book contains a few pages of resources for laboratories, vendors, herb associations and other books or literary resources.

There are lots of charts and sidebars and overall I found this book to be very useful and easy to access. It doesn't have the level of information needed to make this anything other than a quick reference book though.

5 out of 5 stars in love with herbs.......2007-01-25

I adore this book! Wow! It has all the things I wanted!
- it's organic
- it very thorougly covers many herbs in different formats, so you know everything from what bugs they attract or repel, how tall they grow, and what zone they can be grown in
- common uses for them: I discovered many herbs I thought were inedible plants that are indeed herbs
- easy to use tables

I wasn't too hip on all the cosmetic and craft uses - I'd rather eat them, but they're short and may come in handy. I know the rest of the book sure will!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2006-08-23

This is a great book for a beginning herb gardener. The first half of the book is a general overview of gardening techniques, designs, and uses for herbs. The second half gives specific information on growing and using many herbs. This has been extraordinarily helpful to me as background and reference for me.

However, it is pretty basic and only covers the most commonly used herbs, so I'm not sure that advanced herb gardeners would get much out of this.

5 out of 5 stars "Must Have" for aspiring herb growers.......2006-07-24

Great resource book. Covers all of the basics in clear, simple instructions.

5 out of 5 stars A complete herbal reference book!.......2006-06-26

I really like this book. It is very easy to follow and has a little bit of everything you need to know packed into the book. I bought it for the outside herb garden design, but I changed my mind. I am trying a kitchen garden, growing the herbs inside in containers. If you are new to herb gardening, this is the perfect book. And in my opinion, it is the only book you will need. I want to use the fragrant herbs for sachet crafts and dry some herbs for cooking. These will be terrific gifts for my DIL because she buys and uses a lot of herbs for cooking and will never have the time to grown them. You will never put this book away. There are so many possibilities of what to do with herbs.

5 out of 5 stars Pictures are worth one thousand words!.......2007-02-27

I like this book so much - this is the third copy I have purchased this year! (I keep giving my copy away to family members who desperately need it.) The black line drawings are what keep bring me back to this one book for all of our pruning needs. We have berry bushes (some wild and some we planted ourselves), flowering shrubs, fruit trees, a bonzi tree, a dogwood, grape vines, 3 old Oaks trees and 2 young Walnut trees. This ONE BOOK has helped us to care for each of them according to their needs and age. It has helped turn my brown thumb into green.

If you're looking for a good basic book on pruning this is it. I purchased the Ortho book on Pruning and it was a terribe. I went to the library and rented several books on pruning and this was by far the best.

3 out of 5 stars O.K.......2004-12-15

I was somewhat disappointed when this book came. I was expecting a detailed description on pruning individual types of trees. For example, I wanted a book that I could look crepe myrtle up in the index go to that page and have a detailed description on how and when to prune. Crepe Myrtle is not even in the index. I am going to buy the Southern Living Gardening book now.

5 out of 5 stars I can't make a move in my yard without this book!.......2005-07-12

Ok! I've been in Florida since I was 4 years old... 34 years. My Mom started me loving plants & gardening. I have never read a book on Florida gardening like this book & I've been around a lot of plant books. Everything wonderful that I want to grow in Florida is featured in this book & the pictures are the best. Each plant is featured on its own page & at the bottom of the page the author gives his opinion on his personal favorite selection. I can't believe how many new plants I have been turned on to by reading this book, like the Kaffir Lily (Clivia), which I now own 3! Absolutely beautiful plant! The book also has several references to Florida native plants & plants that are in keeping with a the old Florida look, which I'm especially fond of. Not every book on Florida plants is going to have every little thing, but if you're looking for the best of everything, an interesting yet easy read, stop right here... You just found it!

5 out of 5 stars BEST FLORIDA GARDEN BOOK, EVER!.......2003-07-10

I am a new homeowner, and I have bought several books on the ins and outs of gardening. This book is the best. If offers simple to read pages on different types of plants to be used in Florida. I consider this my "garden bible." I realize that it is not in-depth, but it certainly highlights the basic information on what type of plant, where to plant, and what to feed it. I have purchased most of my plants for my landscape based on recommendations from this book. I have been more than pleased with the results.

If there is a book you need to help you design your home landscape, this is definately the place to start!

4 out of 5 stars I wish there were more.......2003-03-17

The first thing I have to say about this book is that I wish it were more comprehensive. I moved to Florida from the north, and find the book an excellent reference. The pictures are wonderful, and only a few plants do not have them. I especially find the sections on "companion planting and design" and "regional advice and care" helpful. The book is well-organized into sections on trees, perennials, tropical plants, vines, etc. The drawback is that the book refers to plants that are not included, which leaves me searching for another reference to find out the appearance and habitat of that plant. Overall, an excellent place to start. Sam's Club has it at a great price.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book ever...........2001-12-28

This is absolutely the best book ever for getting plant identifications. If you garden in Florida, this is a 'must have' book for reference.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars beginner orchidist.......2007-05-13

I originally bought this book for the descriptions of the orchids, but found a lot of basic orchid care information. I have several orchid books, and this is one of three I use the most.

4 out of 5 stars Still can't identify my orchid.......2007-04-06

My girl friend left me with four orchids when she departed to take care of her sick parents. These were definitley the dregs of her 20+ collection. Surprisingly, I've been able to get two of them to bloom, but even all these pictures can't help me identify the blomming orchid.
Excellent for instructions on how to take care of the plants; however, I will have to report back later if their procedures worked for me!

4 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book.......2007-02-27

An excellent book with cultural information that goes well beyond what's in most beginner books, yet is accessible and easy to understand. The 300 gorgeous color plates, if overly saturated with color,at times, are restricted to a satisfying mix of genera, both species and hybrids. This book is compact and impossible to keep open and would benefit from a much deserved larger format. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR YOUR LIBRARY.......2006-01-13

I grow and collect orchids strictly as a hobby. I first purchased this particular work at the time of it's publication and have been using it ever since. The photographs are wonderful and I have found that the 300 + orchids covered in this book are truely that...covered and covered quite well. The author's text, as to discriptions and "how to grow," are extremely useful. The grower/collector must realize though, that as the title of the book states, this covers more than 300 orchids. Needless to say, there are many, many more out there and If one wishes to own just one book that lists all of them, then be aware this one does not. That being said, I have yet to find a book that does list all of the hundreds and hundreds of varities and thousands of hybrids. I shoud think that this would be an impossible undertaking as each year these numbers increase many fold. I personally own several dozen books on the subject and am constantly adding to them. This is a good book, one that should be added to the many others you will no doubt purchase if you pursue this wonderful hobby. I recommend this one highly.

3 out of 5 stars Not very practical.......2005-11-03

Depending on what you're looking for, this book is not for everyone, definitely not for the beginners. There're very little instructions on how to cultivate orchids. I find the binding of the book awkward. The pictures are of great quality though.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Guide to Composting.......2007-07-22

If people are still buying it after all these years one would think it of value.

5 out of 5 stars Let it Rot!.......2007-01-20

This was a christmas present which he has alot of enjoyment reading.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic information.......2005-07-16

Sadly, composting has a bit of a bad reputation some places. Many people imagine that you have to wear Birkenstocks and take part in anti-globalization marches, grow your facial hair and bathe infrequently to compost. Nothing could be farther from the truth!
According to most gardeing experts, amending one's soil is just about the most important thing one can do to ensure the health and beauty of a garden. Composting can be an inexpensive, quick and simple way to improve the soil, and it cuts down on the waste taken off to garbage dumps.
Let it Rot! Gives clear, well-written help on understanding how composting works, how you can set up your own composting system, and pitfalls to avoid. After you follow the instructions and see your garden blossom as never before, you'll understand: You don't need to be a hippy to compost your scraps!

5 out of 5 stars Total novice, but the pile is coming along.......2003-11-15

This book is my first on composting, and while it didn't give me the desire to do it, it certainly gave me a great start in figuring it out. It seems to be well worth the read so far.

5 out of 5 stars I'll be a pro at composting by the end of the season.......2002-04-08

This is a great, clear cut, interesting and fun-to-read book! Stu Campbell is able to take what, to newcomers, can be a daunting task and not only present us with the basics to feel comfortable but he also translates some of the scientific "mumbo-jumbo" of how and why compost works into layman's terms. He includes real "recipes" and approaches to try as well as suppling a list (though not nearly complete) of good materials to compost as well as what NOT to use. A short "troubleshooting" chapter called "Things You Might Worry About a Little" is a bit over the top for beginners but is part of what makes this book valuable for the seasoned composter. Let It Rot! is a not-to-technical, well-written, easy-to-read guide that takes the "yuck" out of your composting ideas! Perfect for beginners and a great refresher for near professional composters.

Book Description

Revered by gardeners since ancient times, when they were brought into cultivation in Asia, magnolias have lost none of their allure. In fact, a steady supply of new magnolias has become available in recent years, from both newly discovered species and newly created hybrids, making the genus a source of greater horticultural excitement than ever before. Though loosely based on the author's 1989 book of the same name, Magnolias is so extensively revised and expanded as to be considered an entirely new book. This highly illustrated survey of the genus includes species and hybrids, extensive information on cultivation and propagation, and more than 150 fine photographs. The appendices list societies, plants for specific landscape situations, plants that have received awards, and places to see and buy magnolias.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Magnolia References.......2007-09-20

This is a fabulous reference for owners of magnolia trees and all persons considering planting a magnolia at any time in the future. This book will give you detailed information on habit, growth rate and hardiness that is a level of specificity well above most nurseries. My only wish was for more pictures, there seem to be multiple pictures of a few select species but none for the majority of those listed in the book. However, the title includes "A gardener's guide" rather than "Encyclopedia" so I did not feel misled.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know.......2003-05-24

The book is a very thorough examination of the genus magnolia, both species and hybrids, with chapters on history, cultivation, propagation, pests and an excellent section on which species and hybrids to choose for your garden.

While not for the casual gardener, I found much to recommend to any serious gardener considering an ornamental tree.

This is no doubt the authoriative text on the subject and a very interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for the serious horitculturalist and home gardner........2000-08-04

Gardeners interested in an in-depth coverage of magnolia hybrids, species, and their care will find this offers all the detail they require, charting the magnolia's culture, characteristics, and history. Magnolias isn't for the casual gardener, but for those devoted to the magnolia in particular and horticulture in general: a recommended pick for any serious horticultural library.
