Book Description
Gardeners seeking to adorn landscapes in more northerly climates with delicate camellia blossoms will learn how to in this comprehensive guide. Following a brief history of the genus Camellia and the breeding process which has enabled strains to survive in colder climates, this guide outlines the steps to success—from siting, planting, and fertilizing to pruning, propagating, and controlling pests and diseases. Besides offering a wealth of time-tested advice—from one who for more than 40 years has mounted extensive research in the cultivation of camellias suitable for areas outside of their natural habitat and has had a type of camellia named after him—this handbook provides a list of camellia varieties that will thrive in zones five and six, as well as appendices identifying camellia societies, nursery sources, collections, and suggested readings.

Not just for Floridians.......2004-10-26
This slim (64 pages), oversize book is crowded with photos of flowering Southern trees and a wide variety of palms. It would be better if it included a full picture of a tree showing it's growth pattern and not just pictures of the flowers or seeds. It is more inclusive for the palms, showing full-length photos besides the leaves.
It is indexed inside the back cover. The descriptions are interesting, telling some of the growth habits, and uses of each tree. One problem arises when 3 or 4 trees are shown on one page; it is difficult to tell which block of text matches which photo.
Overall, a useful and fairly comprehensive photo album of Florida's trees, filled with lovely, colorful pictures.
Florida's Fabulous Trees.......2003-11-12
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn to identify the different trees common to Florida. I got this book when I bought a house and started thinking about landscaping, and wanted to be able to identify trees around here. Great photos, helpful text, I would definitely recommend it.
Really great pictures.......2003-04-22
This book has really great pictures in glorious color. That is just about all that can be said for or about this book.
The text is so-so: The worst offense appears (p43) "bansai trees" where they mean "bonzai trees", but the rest of the text is not nearly that bad. For a book on trees there are remarkably few trees in it. Something like half the book is palms.
The oversized pages make this a somewhat clumsy book. But the pictures are really, really great!
Great Picture Book.......2003-02-01
This is a great photo guide to Florida's trees. I wanted to identify some of the trees that we see on our annual vacations to Florida over the years and this book did the trick. It's not a technical horticultural guide but just a book with lots of pictures of hundreds of different species with foliage, flowers, shape, color and anything else you need to sucessfully identify tropical trees.

Get the 1999 edition........2000-07-16
The 1990 edition has been superceded by the 1999 edition. Be sure to get the current one.
An extraordinary work........2000-07-16
Comprehensive, beautifully illustrated with botanical drawings. A stunning work of scholarship, it is the ultimate reference for Hawaiian flora. Two large volumes. Intended for professionals, but amateurs like myself who persist (and use the glossary at the end of volume two) find it fascinating. Be sure to get the 1999 edition rather than the one from a decade earlier.
Customer Reviews:
Good source of information on plants........2002-06-20
This book is loaded with lots of pictures and information on various plants. They are even broken down into color groups. Has both common and scientic name, along with a color picture for easy identification of flowers.
Only for color-coordinated gardeners.......2002-02-24
This book uses a rather peculiar method of dividing flowers into sections by color. It has sections for Orange-Red flowers, Pink flowers, Purple-Blue flowers, White flowers, and Yellow flowers, with each section sub-divided into Annuals, Bulbs, Climbers, Perennials, Shrubs, and Trees. Each flower has a photo and about a paragraph of description, with hardly more information than you would find on the average seed packet. This might be a good resource for the professional landscaper or garden designer, but it's a little confusing for this casual backyard gardener.
Great gift for a gardener!.......2001-07-06
This large, beautiful, hardcover book makes me happy just looking at it! It is bright and pretty on the outside and full of lovely photographs and helpful information on the inside. At the time of this review, it is at a great price, too! It has many features which make it user-friendly, such as a breakdown of flowers by color, type of plant (tree, shrub, perennial, etc.), and a common names index. Mary Moody has done a nice job!
Lovely photographs, well written and a pleasure to peruse........2001-07-02
I confess to having become a snob when it comes to gardening books and magazines. The English publications seem so much better than the American ones; however, this book is an exception to that rule. It is well written, includes many fine photographs and - most importantly, for me, at least - has a good selection of unusual plants and their requirements. I highly recommend this book - and at its special price, it is a phenomenal value.
Creating a secret garden is no secret........2000-06-23
Anyone from novice to expert can use this book to create their own magical getaway that will continue to bloom and captivate for years to come. The Encyclopedia of Flowers helps you to plan your garden layout, then gives you advice for the proper care of the plants that you select.
Buy one for yourself and one for someone you care about that would benefit from their own secret garden.

Great 'how-to'.......2001-07-20
Put this one in the category of a good 'hands-on' guide to bonsai, almost like having a master looking over your shoulder. The book offeres specific advice on care & pitfalls of ten popular species -- which is great -- but the part I value the most is the author's use of examples in showing how to create and re-design bonsai specimens.
He often begins either with carefully-selected nursery trees or with commercially produced pre-bonsai trees. This way, he tends to start with mature trunks and roots, and some branching. This is probably the best way to go when seeking to create a truly good bonsai specimen within a few years.
If you like this book, you'll probably also like Gustafson's "Bonsai Workshop," which has been particularly helpful to me with conifers, and which uses a similar project-related approach.
I'd put this book on my short list for any bonsai library, and would have given it five stars had it been longer and more detailed with general bonsai information. But fortunately, the information not found in "The Art of Flowering Bonsai" can easily be found elsewhere.
Detail oriented and does a great job of explaining all facts.......1999-10-05
I have read many books on Bonsai from various sources. This one gave me very detailed explanations on specific trees/plants. Lot of details and pictures. This is not one of those books with a bunch of good pictures and little details. Well worth the purchase.
Beautifully illustrated and very helpful: 4.5 stars.......1998-11-24
I highly recommend this book to other bonsai-ists. It's worth the price for the illustratons.
Book Description
The world would be a pretty drab place without flowers. Their bright cheery colors help make our natural environment a more delightful place to be. But flowers in all their beautiful variations didn't evolve just for the viewing pleasure of the later-developing human race. What are flowers really for? As botanist and popular science writer William Burger makes clear in this enchanting book, the quick and simple answer is: sex. Burger emphasizes the essential role that flowers play in life's evolutionary scheme. Their bright colors and alluring shapes represent a strategy for attracting insects and inducing animals to help with pollination. This constant intermingling is nature's way of perpetuating the species and encouraging variety, so as to protect against disease and unpredictable environments. Flowers are the supreme example of nature's reproductive exuberance, ensuring the persistence of life against an onslaught of destructive forces. More significantly, Burger points out, flowers are the fundamental energy resource for most of the biosphere. Since they energize themselves by capturing the energy of sunlight, they provide a vital link in the chain of life, especially for animals and humans, which depend on other organisms to nourish and energize them. Without the existence of flowering plants, human survival would be in jeopardy. Finally, Burger goes on to show the paramount importance of a few species of plants that have served not only as the basis of agriculture, but, in doing so, have enabled human civilization to thrive. Even today, in our complex technological world, it is the flowering plants that provide us with nearly all the vegetable energy that sustains us. Written with clarity, wit, and engaging enthusiasm for the marvels of our fragile ecosystem, Flowers will make you stop and smell the roses, with a new appreciation of their crucial role in the web of life.

Everything You Might Have Wanted to Know about Flowers.......2006-07-28
William C. Burger's "Flowers: How They Changed the World" is certainly a labor of love. His clear and enthusiastic prose transported me back to a course in botany I had at the University of Arizona around 1970. As a zoologist I had had little contact with botany, but I had always been interested in the subject. The course I took in botany opened up this fascinating world and I now remember the hours I spent in class and in hunting flowering plants in the desert as golden. This book brought all that delight back.
From the structure of flowers, through their function, defences, evolutionary history and history related to humans and other organisms, Burger has opened the door to an enchanted world. Yet it is the world just outside, in vacant lots, woods, meadows, tropical forests, agricultural fields, yards, roadsides, deserts and swamps- in fact almost anywhere.
A naturalist can find profound interest in the weeds, wild flowers and cultivated plants described here, and thus is almost never bored. I thus recommend this volume without reservation. It will open the reader's eyes to an absolutely engrossing subject and may give them a life-long passion.
A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.......2006-07-25
Flowers are one of the most attractive aspects of the outdoors; but they didn't evolve just for humans to appreciate. Botanist and science writer William Burger examines the role of flowers in the natural world, from how their bright colors and shapes attract and induce animals to help with pollination to how they serve as an energy resource. Chapters survey flowers, their pollinators, and how flowers have enabled ecosystems to survive in his lively blend of botanical research and wide-ranging natural history insights. A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.

Handy Flowering Tree Guide.......2004-05-01
Like so many of us, Mark obviously loves tropical trees with gorgeous flowers. He has gathered together the best of the best and his photos are exceptional. Most of the trees covered are not just restricted to Florida but can be grown in other tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world.
Introduction to flowering trees for the tropics.......2001-08-26
This is really neat little book, well-printed and with top quality color pictures. The pictures are supported by brief and informative texts. The book gives a good overview of trees that blossom profusely with showy flowers and that are suitable for planting in the tropics. Beyond an emphasis on (C-& S-) American species and the use of Florida common names there is nothing in the book that ties it to Florida in particular.
Beautiful photos!!.......2001-04-03
Planning on a move to Florida from Michigan, I was lost as to what kind of trees to landscape my large yard with. This book is wonderful! Especially helpful are the clear, color photos of both the flowers close-up, and then the entire tree in its flowered state. These pictures show the trees "shape" when full grown also. I'm so glad I got this, it will definitely help with my decisions on what trees to buy!!
WOW!! Wonderful book!.......2000-09-09
This is a great reference book for flowering trees. The photos are outstanding. Includes a view of the whole tree and then a close-up of the flowers. Also good info about each tree.
I live in Southern California and most (if not all) can also be grown here. I want them all!
I highly recommend this book!
Outstanding photography with easy to read descriptions........1999-05-19
This book is an excellent reference book for Florida trees. The photography is absolutely beautiful. It allows the reader to easily identify a tree and then read about it as a layman or a more advanced horticulturist.
I believe it is a must buy for newcomers to Florida as well as anyone interested in flowering trees in the south.
A must for your Florida flora collection.
