Product Description
Although in Western society the beneficial aspects of bacteria have been increasingly minimized, we actually need bacteria in our digestive tracts for good health. This resource explains, to laymen and physicians, how probiotics support immune function, prevent urogenital infections, and maintain good gastrintestinal health.

A health secret you can't afford to miss!.......2004-10-01
My son was diagnosed with severe reflux, eczema and food allergies. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to research probiotics. ALL of this information is contained right inside this powerful book. I found an absolute wealth of information and leads to help me treat my sons severe allergies. Many of the suggestions in her book have saved us time and money. And one of the most important parts is where the author helps you select a probiotic, since MUCH of what is on the market is worthless, mislabled or DEAD bacteria. People are starting to become aware of the benefits of probiotics (as other countries have known for so many years) but they are throwing their money away on products that do not even contain the strains of bacteria listed on the label or even any live bacteria at all. Although I bought the book with interest in my son's situation, there are so many other conditions discussed and I have lent this book out more times than I can count. It is also very suitable for physicians and I have had one friend use it to discuss her probiotic use during pregnancy (to prevent allergy in her baby) and I just bought another copy to give to our pediatrician (who also recommends certain reputable brands of probiotics to help treat behavioral issues) I would highly recommend this book. It will save you hundreds of hours of research and you will think of many friends and relatives who can benefit from the research it contains.
Reliable information on probiotics.......2004-09-30
Probiotics are products containing bacteria that are beneficial to health. Digestive problems and allergies are increasing in developed countries and much of the source of these difficulties appears to lie with a poor mixture of bacteria in the intestine. Taking probiotics to remedy the imbalance is a popular approach among the general public, but very little reliable information is available.
Kelly Karpa's book remedies this by providing a readable and scientifically-sound review of current knowledge.
Dr Karpa is both a qualified pharmacist and a concerned parent, and she combines her skills to produce an admirable book. It explains the gut microflora (billions of bacteria that reside in each person's intestine) and also the evidence for probiotics improving a range of disorders.
These disorders include infectious diarrhoea (gastroenteritis, antibiotic-associated diarrhoea, Clostridium difficile, traveler's diarrhoea), allergies (rhinitis, asthma, food allergies), urogenital infections (vaginitis, UTIs), and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis).
An especially useful chapter is on how to select a good probiotic. There is also information on prebiotics, soluble dietary fibre that boosts numbers of one's existing beneficial bacteria.
The two chapters on the immune system are a bit heavy going for the general reader, but they both have a short summary and the chapters can be skipped without spoiling the rest of the book. Also, there is no index. But the book is well-structured with detailed Contents pages, so the absence of an index should not prove a major difficulty.
Despite these minor weaknesses, the book is invaluable for people with any of the listed chronic conditions as well as for health professionals who work with such patients.

Book Description
Molecular Genetics of Bacteria fulfills the need for a comprehensive, primary textbook on bacterial and microbial genetics. Ideally suited for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses, this book presents an interesting, modern perspective of the subject and offers descriptive background information, detailed experimental methods and data interpretation, examples of genetic analysis, and advanced material relevant to current applications of molecular genetics in biotechnology. The theme of genetic analysis is used to integrate all of the concepts presented in the text, with the pathogenesis and recombinant DNA techniques covered in their own chapters. Although the much-studied genetics of
E. coli are discussed throughout the book, many other microbial systems are introduced in order to show the breadth and diversity of the discipline of bacterial genetics. Chapters are pedagogically constructed and end with a review of key concepts, a set of discussion questions, a set of problems for exercise and testing assignments, and answers to the questions. An end of book glossary reviews all of the key terms found in the text. This book, extensively reviewed and class tested by instructors over the past four years, serves as an important text for all courses in bacterial and microbial genetics. Not a good choice for the visual learner.......2006-06-25
If you are a "visual learner," then this is NOT, I repeat, NOT, the book for you- I cannot emphasise this enough!
The text is very well written, however, the font used is rather small, and there are only FOUR colors used throughout the entire book.
The text is done entirely in light brown, black, grey and white.
Students like me -strongly visual learners- will be miserable; everyone else will like the book.
Fantastic introduction to the subject.......2005-08-01
This is one of few college textbooks I've used that has actually HELPED me learn the course material. The book takes you from the basics (DNA structure and replication, etc.) all the way through some very complex concepts while never missing a beat. It's surprisingly readable and student-user-friendly whether you're a beginner or a certifiable gene jockey. My only complaint is the quality of the figures; some of them are very small and thus hard to read, and as one reviewer commented, they are sort of simplistic to the point of not being very thorough. Having full-color illustrations would be a big plus.
Overall, this book definitely surpasses other bacterial genetics books I've seen as far as readability and organization goes. It delivers what it promises!
Very useful and informative.......2005-03-06
This book is great in developing the concepts and explaining in an easy but at the same time techinical way just what is involved in bacterial genetics. Teaching from the historical perspective you really get a sense of what these researchers were faced with and just how valuable their breakthoughs were. It doesn't try to be "hip" like so many other undergraduate textbooks out there, and for that they get full credit. The figures are a little simplistic though.
Excellent Book.......2004-03-26
This is an excellent and in-depth presentation of the molecular genetics of prokaryotes. Explanations are crystal clear throughout, and the diagrams are very well done. (Typographical errors are everywhere, but fortunately they are easy to spot and none of them are misleading.) The text can seem long at times, but the extra effort spent reading is repaid in terms of clarity. The authors are careful to insure everything is explained well. The book also covers several areas of prokaryotic biology besides molecular genetics, such as cell division, antibiotics, transport of molecules across the cell membrane, two-component signaling pathways, bacteriophages, and many others.
This is undoubtedly the best introduction to prokaryotic biology out there. Highly recommended.
A good book for microbial genetics.......2000-02-26
While many books in molecular biology explore about the eukaryotic cells, this book is designed for prokaryotic aspects. Most of the topics are about the E.coli the bacteria that we now know much about. However, some of the topics are somewhat complicated and misleading for an undergradaute student who still needs some backgrounds in bacterial genetics (A good example is where the authors draw the picture of the interaction between lac O1, O2 and O3 in the lac operon and that's wrong!)...The questions at the end of each chapters are nice and well prepared but a few of the answers given at the end of the book do not explain the point well enough. Overall, this is a good book for anyone who wants to know specifically in the field.
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK IS ON THE THIEVS LIST GET IT IF YOU CAN!.......2007-09-27
Buy this book if you can. This is the number one book that is stolen from your library in order to suppress the information. Believe me, main stream media does not want this book to be known. Barry Lynes tells all about Royal Rife and the machines he made that were confiscated and destroyed by the Medical Industry (AKA medical mafia) with gestapo like tactics.
Come on man this is the twenty-first century ; the future of medicine is electronic frequencies and the future doctors are diagnostic technicians;PLAIN AND SIMPLE. The book cover states FIFTY YEARS OF SUPPRESSION but it was written in 1987 so now it is more like SEVENTY YEARS OF SUPPRESSION. Even Nikola Tesla helped make some of these electronic medical devices which were also confiscated and destroyed. Need I say more ? end of story.
Present Day Confirmation.......2007-09-12
Royal Raymond Rife seems to have been on to something that's recently been re-discovered. John Kanzius, a researcher and inventor in Erie, PA has demonstrated a frequency device that kills cancer cells specifically. His theories and technological devices are now being tested by Dr. Stephen Curley at the MD Anderson Cancer Center (they treat 79,000 cancer patients a year) in Houston Texas.
Although I'm inclined to believe most of the horror stories of suppression in this book, it becomes distracting to go backwards when the gist of the story is being positively reborn.
There is no possible compensation for all the parties except a future in which their theories are proven correct and human beings benefit from their simple and effective use in the cure of cancer
Sorry sceptics, it's all true.......2007-02-15
This is a wonderful book, about a real cure. Of course it works, and of course the sceptics are wrong. However, the orthodoxy will of course put up a fight, and sadly try their best to convince those in the media who do not know any better to ridicule or suppress such information coming out. More power to the internet. So we must fight back, in any (legal) way we can - mainly by getting information out to the public.
As for the book, it is highly readable and a shocking expose of corruption and suppression. There is much in the world that is being suppressed at the moment, in technological fields - especially surrounding electromagnetics of which this is a form. I am widely read in this area, and sadly many other fields of research experience it too. Science is a very ego-driven corrupt cult at the moment, on the whole - mainly because the founding principles of science - an open minded search for the truth - have become corrupted into a closed minded battle of egos and power. A prime example is Robert Parks that Peter Bowditch's absurd "review" mentions below - Parks is not a man to have any respect for, despite his position, and he is as corrupt as they come.
More power to those who believe in Rife, and seek to genuinely recreate his work.

Uhhh.......2006-10-14
First off, I think the author forgot to mention that Rife is apparently God of universe in his book, or at least thats the way he is portrayed. Second, why should I have to plunk down 4000 bucks to prove this radio can heal me, maybe you should try showing a couple of people through some free trials. Who is going to support some quack job by giving them $4000 only to find out that it doesnt work?
WAKE UP AMERICA, IT'S YOUR HEALTH!!!.......2006-03-18
It's time for America to wake up to the reality of what is going on around us. Orthodox cancer treatment not only DOESN'T work, but it is killing people! Rife was a genious who was condemned and persecuted for discovering a non-chemical way to knock out virtually every disease known to mankind. We need to be suspicious of WHY Rife was snuffed out rather than being revered as the Humanitarian HERO that he was.
THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE and EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE SKEPTICS!!

Herbal Antibiotics by Stephen Buhner.......2007-09-13
This book has some great information about using herbs. It is well organized and easy to understand. I have many books on herbology, but this one stands out as a must have. For any who are dealing with Lyme disease and it's co-infections, I highly recommend it.
Informative and essential.......2007-06-27
I've moved back and forth recently, but I'm glad I decided to keep this book. It's well-written and informative and seems like something we should all have in our libraries.
Excellent Primer and Quick Reference.......2006-01-15
Just the book I was looking for. The author presents the information in a very clear and concise way. The book is well formatted for quick reference too and does a good job of suggesting how to prepare dosages. It's good to see also the sources the author cites on the effectiveness of some of these herbs.
The only thing I disagree with the author on is how he makes it appear that these bacteria are somehow "intelligent". Bacteria aren't intelligent. They're just little organic machines that perform to their program written in their DNA. They're not conspiring to somehow take over the world;-)
AN INCREDIBLE BOOK.......2002-12-19
Using leading-edge scientific research author Stephen Buhner reveals the little-known world of bacteria and their amazing ability to develop defenses to pharmaceutical antibiotics. Citing many of the world's leading bacteriologists he shows how bacteria will eventually develop immunity to most antibiotics - that the window of opportunity we have had as a species during the antibiotic era is almost over. He then comprehensively explores the most recent scientific research on the plant compounds that have been found in in vivo, in vitro and in human trial to be effective in treating antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. The book looks at the ten primary antibiotic-resistant disease organisms and those plants that have been found in clinical trial to be effective for their treatment. This book is a must have! It begins a long overdue exploration of more ecologically sustainable approaches to the treatment of disease with substances that are ecologically sustainable. The author's firm grasp of his subject matter and the comprehensive nature of his treatment of the subject make this a book that will continue to be useful for years to come. Highly recommended!
Tenets of Bacterial Ecology.......2002-12-11
It seems that Mr. Buhner is not particularly well versed in the basics of bacteriology and microbiology. I found it particularly perverse when he claims that bacteria have true intelligence and premeditated cooperative abilities in that they "learn" how to live in antibiotic environments. Further, the idea that the use of ground up plants will stop bacterial infection goes against sound reason.
1. Bacteria survive because they are opportunistic, id est, they reproduce quickly and successfully because they are small and can exploit natural resources before other organisms can.
2. Bacteria survive because they are variablistic: they are not intelligent or premeditative, they are a simple algorithm which permutates often, but randomly. When something works it survives to reproduce.
This second statement supports the idea that plant extracts cannot be used as antibiotics any more effectively than a synthetic antibiotic like chlorampheticol. Plants as a general group of organisms rely on the opposite evolutionary strategy to survive: invest in your stake (resources and physical individual) in order to make it successful by making it unavailable for use by opportunistic organisms. While this sounds like it may support the use of herbal antibiotics, it actually indicates that plants choose stability over variability and therefore don't change as quickly as bacteria...nor do the biosynthetic products they produce. Any such product would, if it was antibiotic in the first place, be subject to the very same forces of selective bacterial reproduction as a synthetic drug, rendering it useless in short time.

Cellular Microbiology describes interactions of microbes and pathogens in the wider context of the cell properties, helping the reader to envisage different possibilities for his or her own problem while detailing known specific examples. It provides microbiologists moving into cell biology a deep understanding of the field as well as a broader knowledge of possible interaction between their favorite organism and mammalian cells. It also provides cell biologists with a comprehensive update of this emerging field.
Customer Reviews:
Good text.......2006-02-25
I am sure this is a great text for plant biologists, but personally I found it to be very helpful in understanding some fundamental biology in a different context, e.g. CAM metabolism. I recommend it.
Excellent introduction to Cell Micro.......2004-09-09
This book introduces the reader into a new area of research that explores basic cellular mechanisms by using microorganisms and their products as tools to study the cell. It provides an excellent introduction to undergrads not familiar with medical microbiology; more advanced students can skip the beginning and focus on their selected area of interest (the chapter on apoptosis is specially interesting).
Book Description
Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, one of the most comprehensive and authoritative works in the field of bacterial taxonomy, has been extensively revised in the form of a five volume Second Edition. Since the first edition was published in 1984, the field has undergone explosive growth, with over 2200 new species and 390 new genera having been described. Numerous taxonomic rearrangements and changes in nomenclature have resulted from more than 850 published new combinations. These developments, which are attributable to rapid advances in molecular sequencing of highly conserved regions of the procaryotic genome, most notably genes coding for the RNA of the small ribosomal subunit, have lead to a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of Bacteria and Archaea, and to the development of new, universally applicable methods of identifying these organisms. This new edition has been completely reorganized along phylogenetic lines to reflect the current state of procaryotic taxonomy but still maintains the familiar layout of the First Edition. In addition to the detailed treatments, provided for all of the validly named and well-known species of procaryotes, new ecological information and more extensive introductory chapters have been added. Use of the manual is aided by a system of cross referencing between the phylogenetic groups and the phenotypic groups used in the First Edition. In keeping with the tradition of the First Edition, volumes will be available individually, and eventually as a complete set. The editors for Volume One are David R. Boone of Portland State University and Richard W. Castenholz of the University of Oregon.

One of the best!.......2007-10-02
Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger is one of the best books I've seen to educate primary grade children about viruses and bacteria and how they can make you sick -- and how you can make yourself well again. Sometimes, your Doctor will have to send a swab or a drop of your blood to a lab to see just the right way to make you well if your illness is caused by a bacteria or protect you from some diseases caused by a virus.
I am amazed at how well this scientific information is presented for young readers, and the follow-up with a section on The Rules for Good Health make this a must buy for parents.
Love the cartoons, and I learned something too.......2007-03-25
Every illustration in this book is a cartoon, and in many of the illustrations a cat, dog, lion, or some other animal will make some kind of random comment. This was pretty funny, but not quite as funny as the cartoons in another Lets-Read-and-Find-Out Science book called Digging Up Dinosaurs.
According to this book, the sticky saliva in your mouth catches germs and prevents them from going inside your body to cause further damage. I didn't know that. Hope all the information is correct.
When my kids were sick, this was one of two books we always read..........2006-06-23
My children, now 19 and 17, loved this book. I guess they were about 6 and 4 when I got it. Whenever they were sick, we read this book and a Sesame Street book called "It's No Fun to be Sick." Reading these books became a comforting ritual, as well as an easy way to learn some basic science.
A missed opportunity to teach about hygiene.......2000-11-27
Although this book is thorough in describing the differences between viruses and bacteria, I think it misses an important opportunity to reinforce hygiene...wash your hands, cover your mouth etc. These are given a cursory review on the last page, with no accompanying illustration. I had hoped that this book would help my almost-4-year-old to understand how people get sick, how they get well, and how they can help prevent communicable disease to reinforce what I teach at home. I do not think that the authors did a very good job of meeting those expectations.
An untimidating, practical account of germs for young reader.......1998-11-20
My three-year old son really enjoys this book. The book's fairly simple, yet informative account of how viruses and bacteria can make us sick helps to make the abstract concept of germs more concrete for him. As an added bonus, the book gives a plug for handwashing, covering mouths when sneezing or coughing, and not sharing cups that most preschoolers can benefit from. I must also confess that, despite having read the Times Science section for years, I learned quite a bit about viruses and bacteria from this simple, well-illustrated book. A good buy, especially for parents who field a lot of factual queries every day. The Let's Read and Find Out series is a great way to let someone else do the explaining for a change.
Book Description
Pox is not an ordinary germ. Sure, like other germs he takes the bubonic bus to Germ Academy, and he proves that he is unhealthy before he attends school. But Pox just doesn't understand why he should want to make a person miserable. Poor Pox is stuck at the bottom of his class. Luckily, Pox is smarter than his friends and teachers believe, and when he's sent to infect an innocent little girl named Myrtle, he makes some new friends and finds himself a much more suitable, healthy home. A delightfully silly-and educational-story from the nearly germ-free Ross Collins.
A hilarious and unique look at how we get sick-from the germ's point of view!

A Great Find!.......2007-05-16
I was looking for a book that I could share with my four year old niece, and found this great book about Germs! My niece absolutely LOVES it! She giggles every time you say some of the germ names while reading the book. She asked everyone to read it to her over and over and over during my weekend visit. She couldn't get enough of it. And it's educational, which her Mom, the school teacher, loves. I would highly recommend.
Awesome Book!.......2006-12-15
We first got this book from our local Library because of the awesome pictures but after reading it knew it had to be one we added to our personal collection! Any time my 6 year old starts feeling sick, we pull this book out and it comforts him. He learned how his body's defences fight off the bug that gets inside him. We then discuss how the germ might have gotten into his body, and exactly how it comes out. Now that he can put a visual representation on what is going on, he is a bit more comfortable with being sick. I really LOVE this book!
Perfect for inquiring young minds!.......2005-07-11
When I saw this book didn't yet have a customer review, I felt compelled to correct the injustice. I purchased this book for my four-year-old niece and it has remained one of her absolute favorites for over a year now. Granted, she is a "just the facts, ma'am" sort of kid -- very interested in how things work, especially the human body. With space-age detail, Germs tells the story of Pox, a student at germ academy (along with roommates Pus, Snot, and Rash) who is learning how to make people sick. Not happy with his mission, Pox is sent to infect a little girl named Myrtle. When confronted with her white blood cells (an army of mini versions of Myrtle herself), Pox decides to make friends instead and opt for a non-infecting life of leisure inside Myrtle's body. While instructive about how we get sick, the book also is empowering in teaching about our immune systems. The pastel color palette has a retro feel, and the germs are cartoonishly gross -- perfect for kids who love to say "Ewww!" -- and yet Pox is adorably cuddly and cute. I highly recommend this book for any science-minded children out there.
