    Book Description

With its variety of habitats, Mississippi contains an especially rich and diverse set of native and naturalized flowering plants.

First published in 1989 this handy volume is the comprehensive, full-color guide to the state's lush array of wildflowers. Now available again, it provides both professional and amateur botanists a quick yet authoritative resource for identifying more than five hundred of the wildflowers found in Mississippi and its contiguous states. An appendix provides scientific names that have changed since the original edition.

Descriptions of species have been consistently organized for ready reference and comparison. Information on plants has been arranged alphabetically by family, genera, and species within the two groups of flowering plants. Each of the five hundred plus species is fully described and is identified by one or more full-color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars MISSISSIPPI WILDFLOWERS by Ms. Lucille Parker, 1981........2002-05-11

This is an exquiste book.I would give it ten stars if I could. Ms. Parker has beautifully reproduced in her book the watercolors she painted of Mississippi wildflowers, a wonderful biodiversity of wildflowers in the state I call home. Although localized to Mississippi this mystical, poetic, yet technically accurate depiction of the wildflowers is far superior to photographic field guides, all right for the field but of no interest in terms of floral art. THIS IS NOT A FIELD GUIDE. A book to savor.Akin to Audubon, THE TEMPLE OF FLORA.

                    3 out of 5 stars Needs more..........2001-07-05

Of 182 pages, only 29 are about Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. Also, there is too much emphasis on restaurants and hotels and not enough information about the location. I am fairly confident that I can find a place to eat when the time comes. What I want to know is: "what is there to see and do?"

However, the information that is in the book is helpful and well-written. I would recommend this book as a place to start but not a complete or even moderate guide.

2 out of 5 stars At least you know where to stay.......2001-03-30

I found this book to be disapointing. It seems to be pretty good at listing where to stay and where to eat but greatly lacks in the "what to do" department. Supposedly written by someone who has lived and traveled extensively in Mexico you might think the book would be filled with an insider's view on where to go and what to do. I'm going by cruise ship and they've provided me with more information on what there is to do in these places than this guide. I'd put this on the "there's got to be a better guide" list and pass it by.

If there is any book that you want as a comprehensive starter on real options, this is IT ! Definitely worth its price. Look out for the numerous case studies that illustrate the wide ranging applications - it gets me thinking about applying onto transport projects....

                    3 out of 5 stars Highly technical.......2002-01-24

This is a very comprehensive text. However, make no bones about it; the prose reflects a highly technical style of writing. If you have limited knowledge about differential equations, logic, and statistics, you will struggle to stay engrossed past the first few chapters. Hard reading is an understatment. I was hoping that this would be the book that could boil down what real options are and give me a straightforward approach to their applications. Reading this I feel like I am back in an astrophysics class at MIT.

5 out of 5 stars My view is that this is an excellent book - worthreading.......2001-10-23

This is an excellent book. I had been initially surprised by the critical reviews for Copeland et al. and Kulatilaka et al. (Copeland, especially, has strong credentials,) but now, having looked at those books, sadly I have to agree. Then I bought this book and found a gem. The approach is fresh and we are not just presented with the same familiar textbook routes; the best part of which is that real problems are not hammered into available but inappropriate analytical solutions. The structure of the book is unusual too: 4 chapters with the foundations (including some maths but fully accessible to managers - good diagrams and plenty of intuition), 6 chapters of case studies (one, "Dixpin" by Stark, written to link with Dixit & Pindyck, the others new and based on consulting/research - nice to see non-standard cases and also more than one underlying variable!), 4 more chapters (the title of the last, "Summary for executives", speaks volumes about the authors' helpful approach, even if you're not an executive!), and 5 appendices + glossary, etc. The appendices and cases are written in the same style as the chapters of main text and the result is a very flexible resource which, I think, will be helpful for beginners, thro' 2nd year MBA and up to quite advanced practitioners.

Even when standard techniques are shown they are given innovative explanations. For example, see pages 266-269 in Newton's Appendix 4, on numerical solution, which I believe is a genuinely new way of taking the well-known mathematical relationship between the Black-Scholes partial differential equation and the heat conduction equation but explaining it using common sense appreciation of heat and temperature (amazingly, he manages to obtain the combined call option payoff and stock price diagrams using a thought experiment in heat/temperature which I could actually understand!). In this single appendix are both the intuition for understanding the evolution of option prices and the details of finite difference calculations which any reader can readily reproduce. His explanation of the random walk for beginners (Appendix 5) is the best I have ever seen (I even liked the very British story about a drunken sailor taking a random walk near Her Majesty's Royal Naval Dockyard - fortunately, the book does not often digress with funny stories, but this one helped).

I am always wary of books with many co-authors (this one has seven) but here you could believe that one author wrote the whole book. Howell is the editor and presumably the author of the chapters which are not attributed; other parts are by different combinations of the seven. All are in the Real Options Group at Manchester Business School, England (Patel is at Cambridge) and that may explain the cohesion of the text.

In many ways this book is technically ahead of the game but you can tell that these guys are at a business school rather than a conventional university department - they know how to communicate with managers as well as students.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Use on SOX reviews.......2004-11-21

Affordable book compared to other IT books, it is well written that provides a comprehensive framework for IT auditing. I especially liked the many Figures/Exhibits that listed Key Risks for the many subjects covered. Working in the SOX compliance area, these risks were a useful summary/checklist to understand what risks should be assessed and managed for SOX compliance. It would not be a detailed book for implementation for an CIO and staff to follow, but for an audit assessment of an IT department, I found useful.

Also, solid instructional material on use of ACL, and of course, the software itself.

2 out of 5 stars It mainly about Security Risk issues.......2004-09-17

As an example, in the chapter on IT Risks and Controls, the only discussion of data integrity is buried in a few lines in a section entitled Security Risk. The examples in the book are mainly about Security issues. Take the subject of data integrity on file transfers. I believe the only mention of the subject outside of Security concerns is a Figure on the OSI Model (Transport layer alone won't detect if a mixture of old and new files are erroneously transfered to downstreams). There is no mention of detection/recovery of skipping/double-posting transactions, error thresholds, data base consistency on no-posts, restart/retry logic, checking for count and amount mismatches, balancing using checkpoints, etc. An auditor I believe should be aware of these types of issues concerning data integrity even in a core concept book.

5 out of 5 stars Apt title - excellent intro.......2004-07-13

Although this is a college-level text, it can be effectively used by newly minted IT auditors to quickly learn the key knowledge and skill factors needed to function within their roles.

I like and highly recommend this book because of the emphasis on CObIT (Control Objectives for IT), which is the basis for auditing per the IT Governance Institute, which is, in turn under the aegis of Information Systems Audit and Control Association.

As stated by a previous reviewer, this book is wide in scope. The first three chapters cover the basics in clear prose and sufficient detail to give both students and on-the-job new practitioners all of the information needed to orient themselves in the role of an IT auditor. The emphasis on risk management in different domains is another strong point. The chapters covering risks associated with network and telecommunications, e-business systems, and system deployments are both technically accurate and portray realistic scenarios. Chapters 9 (Conducting the IT Audit), and 10 (Fraud and Forensic Auditing) round out the topic areas, leaving no gaps in the knowledge required to be an IT auditor.

The accompanying CD ROM has a software application to be used in conjunction with Appendix B case study. I did not work the case study, nor did I thoroughly exercise the application, so will refrain from making judgments about the usability or value of the application. The case study, though, was well put together and realistic, making it an ideal adjunct for class exercises, as well as working practicing auditors through real world scenarios.

For those new to IT Auditing in general and CObIT in particular I recommend visiting the following two sites: IT Governance Institute, ASIN B0001F8V14, and Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ASIN B00006BW74. You can paste the ASIN numbers in the Search box, select All Products and click the GO button to reach these sites. Once there you can explore additional material that will augment this book, as well as copies of CObIT, and an 84-page document titled 'IT Control Objectives for Sarbanes-Oxley', which is one of the hottest contemporary topics in IT auditing.

4 out of 5 stars Up to date, encompassing textbook on IT auditing.......2004-05-04

This is an up to date and good textbook on IT auditing. It begins with an overview of IT audit, legal and ethical issues, risks and controls and ends with a chapter on fraud and forensic accounting. What makes this book especially suited for classroom or self-study is the inclusion of discussion questions, exercises, notes and recommended reading lists at the end of every chapter.

The authors cover a wide field but on the same time manage to touch upon all important topics. COBIT, ISACA standards and guidelines are heavily used and referenced throughout the book, providing a good link between study and practice and perhaps making the book one of the preparation resources for the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) examination. The book also includes a CD with ACL software and a sample auditing engagement, which may be useful in some cases, although it does cover only a fraction of knowledge presented in the book.

Overall, this book indeed teaches the core concepts of IT/IS auditing. This book exists in two identical versions: one is for the North American market, another is for all other countries, although the coverage is mostly limited to US and Canadian regulations and practices.

I read the one review on this book and I don't agree. I think if you don't know anything about accounting information systems this book might appear to be scattered. However, if you have some exposure to AIS(Accounting Information Systems) you'll immediately recognize the flow of topics is typical of the subject. The author is very thorough and organized in his coverage and gives required insight. A book about AIS is not going to read like an accounting textbook, nor are the topics going to be mastered in the same way. I really liked the book. I originally read the library's copy, but I bought my own because it was so good and I wanted a copy.

                    1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2005-10-30

This book is very disorganized. One chapter is flowcharts, next is viruses, next is flowcharts, lets talk about sarbanes oaxley and than flow charts again, now maybe some discussion about SAP and reducing clerical costs then some ERP architecture.

Where they just throwing darts at a piece of paper with topics?

Also, no attempt at a solutions manual to the poorly worded questions. Poorly worded questions which also content wise where pretty stupid, (ie bob notices 50$ missing from his petty cash fund every week, he leaves the counter and he has many people manning the store including janitors. What are preventive controls he can implement)

                            Description:
Based on a review of the literature on data quality and information integrity, a framework was created that is broader than that provided in the widely recognized international control guideline COBIT [ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) COBIT (Control Objectives for Information Technology) 3rd edition. Rolling Meadows, Il: ISACA, 2000], but narrower than the concept of information quality discussed in the literature. Experienced IS practitioners' views on the following issues were gathered through a questionnaire administered during two workshops on information integrity held in Toronto and Chicago: definition of information integrity, core attributes and enablers of information integrity and their relative importance, relationship between information integrity attributes and enablers, practitioners' experience with impairments of information integrity for selected industries and data streams and their association with stages of information processing, major phases of the system acquisition/development life cycle, and key system components. One of the policy recommendations arising from the findings of this study is that the COBIT definition of information integrity should be reconsidered. Also, a two-layer framework of core attributes and enablers (identified in this study) should be considered.
