Book Description
This volume details the transport of molecules, large and small, across the membranes of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial cells. An international group of contributors unify a diverse range of phenomena with the discussion of the signal peptides that target proteins to particular destinations, and the role of chaperonins. Topics covered include secretion of proteins out of the bacterial cell by Type I, II, and III mechanisms, including the newly recognized bacterial signal recognition pathway in Type II; passage across internal membranes of eukaryotic proteins, whether destined for secretion or en route to internal organelles such as chloroplasts and peroxisomes; how bacteria obtain energy required for solute uptake; the role of phosphorylation and evolutionary relationships of the proteins involved; and efflux pumps for toxic substances in bacterial, animal, and plant cells.

Customer Reviews:
AWFUL , AWFUL, AWFUL.......2004-02-25
This is the absolute worst guide book I have ever used! I purchased this one because it was revised in 2003 and assumed that the information would be current and up-to-date. Quickly, I found out how mistaken I was. As far as the information on New Providence/Paradise Island goes, 75% of the restaurants listed we tried to go to were closed, and had been for some time. The names of hotels were wrong, the prices of buses and taxis were dated, it failed to give any kind of review on smaller hotels and we ended up staying a few scary nights in a dump... It lacked on reviews of any kind for that matter, hotels, food, beaches, transportation; the information was either not there or seemed to always be incorrect. This book would be more helpful duct taped shut and used to prop up a leaning bookshelf.

Book Description
In The Great Game, acclaimed business historian John Steele Gordon chronicles the rise of Wall Street from its humble beginnings as an American trading post to its domination of the world economy, bringing to life the remarkable cast of bankers and brokers, visionaries and crooks who made it happen. From Alexander Hamilton to Michael Milken, the history of Wall Street is a history of risk, courage, avarice, patriotism, power, genius, and, occasionally, remarkable stupidity. In Gordon, Wall Street has finally found a biographer worthy of its extraordinary story.
Customer Reviews:
A fun and lively story of Wall Street.......2006-03-12
I read this book before I went to my MBA program. This was a fun introduction to history of Wall Street. It helped me put the financial world into perspective--and it helped me appreciate the power and influence Wall Street has had on our country.
Very Good Historical Read of Wall Street!!!.......2005-10-25
Very interesting. Financial schemes have plagued Wall St and the markets since their inception and not much has changed with the recent Refco, Enron, Tyco, World Com, LTCM scandals and the list goes on. The risk of playing the great game reaches beyond the instrument in which one invests but includes brokers, brokerage houses, banks & politicians. The history of Wall St finds itself another contributor to the old adage "The more things change, the more they remain the same."
history of the beaten heart of the Western countries.......2005-08-20
It provides a good view of the Wall Street which is the beaten heart of the Western countries. As a Chinese who invested some of my money into our developing finance market, I learned many lessons from it and got more confidence of my own country's baby-market. Good Work!
The emergence of the Great Power of Wall Street,.......2004-10-25
This is a great and interesting book about the rise of Wall Street. Gordon summarizes the great amount of information into an a very readable 250 pages. Gordon also gives some short biographies of some of the very interesting characters of Wall Street such as Alexander Hamilton, Commodore Vanderbilt, J. P. Morgan, Hetty Green, and Dick Whitney. This history tells the rise of stock trading on Wall Street to the present period. It is interesting to see why initially the Dutch and the geographical position of New York assured Wall Street of becoming a world financial power of the first degree. This book details why the initial advantages plus the innovation of the financial leaders gave Wall Street the premier financial position in the world.
This book is well written with short biographies and historical summaries of the rise of Wall Street. This is a good initial read since it will show the reader why the NYSE and Wall Street become the financial leaders they are today.
Breezy History of New York as a Business Empire.......2004-10-02
The Great Game is a wonderful narrative history of Wall Street and New York as a financial center, the supercharged engine of world capitalism. John Steele Gordon is a gifted writer whose byline appears frequently in the pages of American Heritage. In this work he focuses on the men and events that made Wall Street the center of the financial world. Beginning with Dutch Manhattan, the city of the Knickerbockers, Gordon explains how Wall Street got its name, the vital importance of Dutch mercantilism and their invention of the modern banking system, the stock exchange, business insurance and the corporation - all of which were adopted by the British who transformed New Amsterdam into New York. The book introduces the origins of the securities business in the Buttonwood Agreement, the vital role of Alexander Hamilton, the consummate New Yorker, who set the new American nation on firm financial footing, the role of New York's great harbor, then the construction of the Erie Canal, which opened the west to development and transformed New York into the financial capital of America. Gordon introduces the colorful figures that have been players in the "Great Game" of the financial markets, from Jacob Little and other early promoters, the "Commodore" Vanderbilt, the mid-19th century colossus, to Hetty Green, millionaire and the "meanest woman in the world" to J.P. Morgan whose financial savvy saved Wall Street from crisis more than once. He writes of the important 20th century figures like Charles Merrill, the man who democratized stock investing and brought it to Middle America and finally Michael Miliken, developer of the "junk bond" as a financial instrument during the go-go 1990's. John Steele Gordon's "Great Game" is a lively and compelling account of the most important little street in the world by a writer who knows his material well and clearly enjoys sharing it.

Product Description
For more than 200 years, fortunes have been made -- & lost -- on Wall Street (WS) by men & women playing the game of capitalism. Gordon tells the true story of Wall Street's wild ride to power. New York City has one of the world's great harbors, & the Dutch founders gave the city its enduring love of making money. WS began as the northern line of defense for a wilderness trading post, at a time when money was limited to gold, silver, & Indian wampum. Today, WS is a metaphor for the global financial market, & money exists mostly on computer screens. The history of Wall Street is a history of risk, courage, avarice, stupidity, patriotism, power, & genius. Illustrated

Customer Reviews:
The 1934 edition is the last edition you should buy........2007-04-08
My star rating is for the 1934 edition, but this review may appear for other editions of the book.
The 1934 edition came out before the creation of the SEC and deals with a lot of accounting irregularities that are not such a problem today. I suggest you buy a newer edition.
Some people seem to have a preference for the 1940 edition. The 1951 edition was the first one written after the Great Depression, so it dealt with businesses in a more normal economic environment. The 1962 edition was the last written directly by Graham and Dodd, but it is currently unavailable. The 1988 edition is the most recent edition of Security Analysis, but it was updated by other authors years after Graham had died. The 1988 edition is the one currently used as a textbook for Columbia University's Security Analysis course.
Best Book on Stocks.......2007-01-16
The best book for stock analysis. The thing that impresses me the most is that it takes investors emotions into account--the main reason people don't make money in stocks.
Best investing book I've ever read.......2006-01-17
Yes, this is the best investing book I've ever read, but I never read the 2nd or 3rd editions so maybe they are better? I do know that the 5th edition is absolutely horrible, it wasn't written by Graham and has nothing to do with this book, and you won't learn anything about investing from reading it.
You do need a strong background in accounting to understand this book. There are some archaic accounting terms used in the book that no longer apply today. A law school course in Corporations Law is helful here too.
Nevertheless, every more modern book on "value investing" never really explained it as well as this book written in 1934.
Yes, the book is long, but who said investing should be easy? If you want easy money, go to Vegas. I made hundreds of thousands of dollars in the stock market after I read this book. This book is more valuable than a college education and a lot cheaper.
A MUST read.......2005-08-10
Security Analysis is the most important book ever written about the subject. (...)

Book Description
CORPORATE FINANCIAL REPORTING is written for students who require an understanding of financial accounting and reporting issues, problems, and practices. It is appropriate for the second financial accounting course at the MBA level, often called Corporate Financial Reporting. This text is also appropriate for schools that offer a one semester Intermediate accounting course, at the undergraduate level, for Finance majors. Careful consideration is given to the management aspects associated with various financial reporting issues. Chapters blend issues, concepts, standards and stakeholder interests to convey the complexities, controversies and uncertainties inherent in the financial reporting process.
Customer Reviews:
Not for everyone.......2005-02-04
Materials are technical and explanations are skimpy. Some cases are excellent but most of exercises are just too mechanical. This book is for advanced courses for real accountants. In my opinion, not suitable for general MBAs.
Great Fun to Teach.......2004-01-03
Here is a secret: the study or practice or accounting may be tedious, but the teaching of accounting is fun. It's about money, power, greed, betrayal -- what's not to like? More particularly, it is one of those courses where students come in bearing such low expectations thaqt their only surprises will be pleasant.
Of all the accounting materials I've been exposed to, none is more fun to teach than this book by Brownlee, Ferris and Haskins. There is an introductory chaper of nuts and bolts. But then, the bulk of the book is made up of case studies in accounting analysis. With bright students (I use it with second- or third-year law students), you can do a whole course from the standing start.
Whenever I teach accounting, I tend to treat it as a "fraud" course--try to find the gimmick. In general, students are uncomfortable with the approach. They tend to think of accountants as nice people and their a not always happy with my seeming cynicism. Post-Enron (and WorldComm, and Adelphia, and Parmalat, etc. etc., etc.), I am tempted to call up all my former students and say -- "See? I was right all along." Meanwhile, it is wonderful to watch the student puzzle over a Brownlee problem and then say (as if with a flash of insight) -- "But that's wrong!" And of course the answer is: "That's why it's in the book."
An excellent book........2000-08-26
This is an extremely well-written and thoughtful book. The authors take a highly practical and rigorous look at accounting as used in practice by publicly-traded companies. It is an effective integration of accounting principles and real-world financial statement analysis -- helps the reader develop a sense of what is aggressive, what is conservative, etc., and what critical issues are discernible but not immediately obvious from a routine examination of financial statements. A good read for would-be Ben Inkers. For a more basic introduction to accounting, check out books by Robert Anthony.

Book Description
It is clear that value added methods provide relevant, useful information for financial analysis, market valuation, and financial decision making in corporate settings. Value added methods can be used in ratio analysis, in the determination of earnings as an earnings management tools, and can be substituted for earnings in equity valuation. When included in a wealth measurement it can vastly improve the quality of decision making. Riahi-Belkaoui covers these topics and more. His book is a probing, essential examination of what the latest value added methods are and what they can do, not only for accounting professionals but for academics and top corporate management as well. Value added reporting is popular in most European countries and in New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia. Most emerging countries are using it too, or considering it. Riahi-Belkaoui explicates latest developments in value-added practice and research, first covering the meaning of the concept, the history behind value added's development and its implied advantages and disadvantages. He then covers the derivation of a value added report, using a fictional case and the resulting data, before moving to an overview of the empirical literature most concerned with value added in the United States. Documenting the overall behavior of the net value added earnings policy model, he lays the foundation for more contextually specific approaches and investigates the usefulness of the substitution of net-value added in equity valuation. The book concludes with an examination of whether accounting knowledge is associated with a decision maker's tendency to ignore value added in wealth measurement in favor of the profit concept. Riahi-Belkaoui draws heavily on his own important writings, to further illustrate and explain the methods and benefits of value added approaches in accounting and other forms of financial decision making.

Accounting: Texts and Cases
ASIN: 0256218404 |
Book Description
ACCOUNTING: Text and Cases, 10/E is a 28 chapter book. Chapters 1-14 cover financial accounting, while Chapters 15-21 cover management accounting, and Chapters 22-28 focus on broader issues of control and corporate strategy. The approximately 120 cases that largely make up the end-of-chapter material are a combination of classic Harvard style cases, as well as extended problems. New to this edition is the inclusion of 2-3 problems per chapter. These problems, while not as involved as the case material, allow the students to exercise the concepts demonstrated in each chapter. The goal of the problem material is to provide a transition to the case material, which is a response to customer requests.
Customer Reviews:
Vacuous.......2005-10-18
The text is incomplete and irrelevant. Often, an explanation of a concept is begun but it ends suddenly without the actual connection to its accounting treatment. Take "Precollected Revenues on page 54; pages 58-60: show (visual) the account entry along with the description. Learners need to see these accounting entries. It would help to add a few worked examples and model answers for the case studies set out at the end of chapters if this text is intended to be used as a teaching text or we will no longer use it.
Insightful Case Studies.......2004-09-30
I can see the point of several previous reviewers that certain additional details flesh out end of chapter case studies. However, I found the writing fresh, insightful, and pointed. Multiple end of chapter resources further illuminated chapter material in detail. In conjunction with a thorough professor, this book is an excellent tool for understanding accounting material.
Beyond unacceptable.......2003-09-22
Verbose and useless! The book says that the only way to learn accounting is to practice doing problems. It sucks at showing you how to do problems. It sucks worst at teaching you the concepts. No matter how many technical or engineering degrees you may have, this will make you feel stupid.
This one will make you pull your hair out!.......2002-06-05
Unless you go to Haaaaarvaaard (I always forget how many A's to put), you are probably going to be a bit perplexed by the content of this book.
The cases go WAY beyond what is covered in the Chapters, and its up to the instructor to try to fill in the gaps (hopefully your instructor realizes this).
I have found myself referring to my textbook from my intro accounting course more often than this book itself in order to grasp the concepts at hand. Seriously, this book is a punishment to anyone who has to buy it for school. And its FREAKIN heavy to haul around across campus.
'Nough said.
A Heavy Book.......2002-01-20
It's not that bad as other reviews say it is, but it is definetely such a heavy book to carry around.
